The Southern Baptist Convention has strayed so far from its historic roots that it scarcely resembles what it once was. What it once was, in case you don’t know, was a collection of like minded believers who shared certain principles of the Christian faith and who cooperated together for missions and ministry. That’s it.
Now it has become a ‘constantly-asking-for-more-money’ big business with highly paid professionals drawn from giant churches which scarcely give a fragment of their income to shared ministry goals and who presume to speak for Southern Baptists everywhere in the press and to the nation.
I no longer trust the SBC leadership to do what’s right. Or Baptist. But I may again one day. When instead of drawing all its leadership from self absorbed self aggrandizing mega churches, it draws the leadership of the Convention from the churches in the majority of its members:
