CLIFF KINCAID — Looking back on the death and destruction in Ferguson, we can see the dirty hands of the media, especially CNN, now basking in the glow of (relatively) high ratings. JOSEPH FARAH — When I look at the protests springing up across the country in the wake of Ferguson, I see a phenomenon that is both very familiar to me and, at the same time, absolutely irrational and destructive. What doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God. ~ Micah 6:8

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. ~ Hebrews 1:1-2

Revisited Would the Son of God Contradict the Father?

Is it true that Jesus never mentioned anything about homosexuality?  That He never brought it up, even once?  Most of us have heard the argument that the Gospels have no record of Jesus condemning homosexuality.  There are individuals, especially from the militant homosexual rights movement,  who utter this fabrication with all the raw hostility of liberals who think abortion is their God given right.

On the Staten Island Decision—Andrew McCarthy

Remember, it is disputed whether the chokehold applied was one the NYPD has banned. It is quite possible that Pantaleo used a different technique, or that he assaulted Garner with nothing like the intensity or duration of the prohibited chokehold. If that is the case, it could credibly be argued that Pantaleo did not use deadly force….

Sea level rise threatening Kennedy Space Center in Florida

Rising seas and pounding waves driven by climate change are chipping away at the coast near the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, threatening launch pads and future operations, scientists said on Friday. “There’s reason to be nervous now because the problem is so obvious,” Peter Adams, a geology professor at the University of Florida, told Reuters. Adams and fellow University of Florida geologist John Jaeger released their findings on a day when the space center on Florida’s east coast was celebrating a successful first test launch of the Orion capsule designed to one day fly astronauts to Mars. Additional 1,000 US troops to stay in Afghanistan

An additional 1,000 US troops will remain in Afghanistan next year to meet a temporary shortfall in NATO forces, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Saturday during a visit to Kabul. President Barack Obama approved the move despite an earlier plan to limit the US force to a maximum of 9,800 troops in 2015. A protracted Afghan election delayed the signing of security deals with the United States and NATO countries, which set back plans for Western governments to contribute troops to the post-2014 mission, Hagel said. America is on a “Hot War Footing” House Legislation Paves the Way for War with Russia?

America is on a war footing. While, a World War Three Scenario has been on the drawing board of the Pentagon for more than ten years, military action against Russia is now contemplated at an “operational level”. Similarly, both the Senate and the House have introduced enabling legislation which provides legitimacy to conduct a war against Russia. We are not dealing with a “Cold War”. None of the safeguards of the Cold War era prevail. There has been a breakdown in East-West diplomacy coupled with extensive war propaganda. In turn the United Nations has turned a blind eye to extensive war crimes committed by the Western military alliance. More

Even the Labor Department can’t explain the latest job report

A quick glance at the November employment report will give you the impression that the job market had suddenly taken flight. But look at the report more closely — as you should always do with all government statistics — and you’ll see a problem. And it’s a problem that even the Labor Department was having trouble figuring out on Friday. Wall Street, of course, loved the 321,000 new jobs that Labor said were created in November. And I’m sure people looking for a job were equally thrilled. Hell, I was giddy until I dug deeper into the figures. As it turns out, last month’s job growth was much more ordinary than the headline figure would have you believe — and it all lies with the seasonal adjustments Uncle Sam sprinkles onto all its data. Why Angelina Jolie’s ‘Unbroken’ May Disappoint Christian Moviegoers

Angelina Jolie’s highly anticipated film Unbroken features the true story of an Olympian and World War II veteran who was only able to extend forgiveness to his captors after he encountered Christianity. The problem? The Christianity that is central to Louis Zamperini’s life is almost entirely absent from the film. That could prove a disappointment to Christian viewers who read the best-seller by Lauren Hillenbrand that spawned the film, or who have been courted by the filmmakers to see the film, which opens in theaters on Christmas Day. The question is whether Hollywood can lure faith-based audiences with a story that’s based on faith but doesn’t pay much attention to it, especially against the blockbuster biblical epic Exodus, which opens on Dec. 12. Processed Foods and Ingredients You Need to Avoid

1. Artificial ingredients

This includes both synthetic dyes (like FD&C Red No. 40, Tartrazine, or Blue No. 1) and artificial sweeteners (like saccharin, aspartame, or sucralose). When you look at the history of food artificial ingredients haven’t been around all that long, and I don’t know about you, but I am not interested in being the guinea pig here. Plus the fact that artificial dyes require a warning label in many countries outside of the U.S. is enough of a deal breaker for me.

Instead: Look for dyes that come from natural sources (like paprika, saffron, or annatto) or forget the coloring all together (it’s only for aesthetics). When it comes to sweeteners pick those that come from natural sources (like honey, maple syrup, and even sugar) over the artificial stuff, but always consume them in moderation (see #2).

2. Refined sweeteners

It’s not that refined sweeteners themselves (like sugar) are the devil, but the quantity in which sweeteners are consumed these days is honestly the scary part. Sugar (or corn syrup or cane juice or brown rice syrup or whatever creative name is on the label) is no longer reserved for truly special occasions anymore, and instead is lurking in yogurts, breads, crackers, flavored oatmeal, beverages, and even innocent-looking salad dressings.

Instead: Rely on natural sweeteners like honey and maple syrup since they are mostly “processed” in nature and at least contain some trace nutrients. BUT it’s important to remember that “sugar is sugar” no matter what you choose. So even if you go the more natural route (which is recommended!) that by no means gives you the green light to turn up the bottle. It’s also helpful to buy foods “plain” (like yogurt, oatmeal, etc.) and sparingly sweeten them yourself to make sure things don’t get out of hand. More

Satanic Temple approved for capitol holiday display

CBS Miami reports:

Florida’s Capitol will have a new holiday decoration this year. The Satanic Temple will be among its nativity scenes and secular presentations.

The Florida Department of Management Services this week approved the proposed holiday display from the Satanic Temple, which a year ago was rejected because the agency said its proposal was “grossly offensive.”

Town told to keep Christ out of Christmas parade

by Marsha West

According to Fox News, the town of Piedmont, Alabama wanted to honor the “reason for the season” but out-of-town atheists objected. The Freedom From Religion Foundation sent Piedmont’s mayor a threatening letter stating that the theme “alienates non-Christians and others in Piedmont who do not in fact have a ‘strong belief in prayers’ by turning them into political outsiders in their own community. … The sentiment of ‘Keeping Christ in Christmas’ does not qualify as a secular celebration.”

Religion and Relationships in America

A new study reveals that religion still has a profound effect on shaping Americans views on sex, relationships and family. The Relationships in America study, produced by the Austin Institute, looks at “how social forces, demography, and religion continue to shape attitudes about family and intimate relationships.” Here are just a few of the many intriguing statistics in the report:

Americans Are Still Religious

Two out of every three (66 percent) Americans still identify with some form of Christianity, with Evangelicals comprising the largest subgroup of Protestants (8.7 percent of the population). Mainliners (3.2 percent) are now fewer than Pentecostals (3.3 percent).  About 27 percent of Americans report attending church weekly (on average), and women still dominate: there are 115 women for every 100 men (ages 18-60) at the average Christian worship service.

Religion and Education

The survey finds that adults with more education are only slightly less likely to report a religious affiliation than their less-educated peers. Among Americans with less than a high school education, 77 percent claim a religious affiliation, while an equal proportion of high school graduates do the same. Among those who have some college education, that number drops slightly to 74 percent, and dips further—but only to 72 percent—among those who have a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Sexual Promiscuity and Sexual Contact

The median heterosexual man or woman (age 18-60) reports somewhere between four and six opposite sex partners in their lifetime. Lesbian women, too, report about the same number of partners. The median gay man, however, has had many more partners—reporting between 16 and 20 same-sex sexual partners to this point in their lifetime.

Thirty-one percent of adults below the age of 60 report having had overlapping sexual relationships at some point in their lives.

Two-thirds of lesbians (70 percent) and one-third (30 percent) of gay men who report attraction exclusively to members of their own sex also report having had at least one opposite sex sexual partner in their lifetimes. On the other hand, among those who considered themselves exclusively (or “100 percent”) heterosexual, the share who had sex with someone outside of what their reported sexual orientation would predict were much lower: just three 3 percent of heterosexual men and five 5 percent of heterosexual women had at least one sexual partner of the same sex.

Pornography Use

Forty-three percent of men and 9 percent of women reported watching pornography in the past week, while only 34 percent of men and 72 percent of women report not viewing pornography in at least a year, if at all.

60-year-old men are only slightly less likely to have viewed pornography within the past week than men in their 20s and 30s. Among women, 19 percent of women under age 30 report viewing pornography in the week prior to the survey, while only three percent of women in their 50s report doing so.

Religious affiliation itself is associated with moderately lower levels of pornography usage, though pornography usage is still common among male churchgoers: 27 percent of Christian male attendees report pornography use in the week prior to the survey.

Religious service attendance also matters for pornography use. Weekly church attenders are the least likely to report pornography use in the past week, while those who rarely or never attend do so at double the rate.

Premarital Sex

Increased religious service attendance is negatively associated with reports of premarital sex. Among married weekly religious service attenders, 65 percent reported first sex prior to getting married, compared to 88 percent who report occasional attendance and a full 96 percent of those who never attend religious services. Among Protestants, those that classify themselves as “liberal Protestants” report the highest levels of premarital sex while more conservative “evangelical Protestants” report the lowest levels.

Christian schools’ ‘hands tied’ by gender-bender rules

Come August of next year, high-school students in Minnesota will be permitted to play sports on teams with whatever gender they “identify” with, rather than what their biological gender would dictate, and a leading Christian family group believes this is a recipe for disaster.

On Thursday, the Minnesota State High School League, or MSHSL, officially adopted new policies that would require all public, private and even some religious high schools to accommodate transgender students, effective Aug. 1, 2015. The decision came in the face of fierce opposition that delayed the decision by months.

However, when Markos pities Bart Ehrman because “the kind of fundamentalism in which the Christian believer turned biblical debunker was raised did not prepare him for the challenges he would face in college,” I recall that Phil Johnson, a classmate of Ehrman’s at Moody, has noted otherwise.

Week in Review from Paul David Tripp

Christmas Is About A Tree [Video] – Christmas is all about a tree, but it’s not about the tree you decorate. In this video, I encourage you to view your Christmas tree through the lens of the Gospel: Watch the Video

Advent: The Need [Wednesday’s Word] – Everyone agrees that something is wrong with the human race. But how do we fix it? Here are 2 common lies that even Christians believe: Read the Devotional

Advent: The Need [Sermon] – You won’t celebrate the significance of Christmas until you recognize the severity of your need. In this first Advent sermon, I show why you and I need Christmas so much: Listen to the Sermon

Do Not Be Surprised… This ‘n’ That

  • Doctrine matters. Otherwise, you end up doing something like this.

  • Tis the season for the “Christmas is a pagan holiday” people to come out of the woodwork. So, is Christmas Day rooted in paganism?
  • Can someone please explain to me why singles need their own devotional? I just don’t get it.
  • If you’re a high school or college student, or if you know one (or two or three…), why not head out to Tennessee for the New Year and take advantage of the free Contend 2015 conference? It’s a nice alternative to the ever-sketchy (i.e., less-than-biblically-sound) Passion conference that will be taking place around the same time.
  • Here’s your weekly dose of adorable.
  • Pastor Voddie Baucham was on Fox News to discuss Ferguson. Well done, sir. It is indeed unfortunate that Fox decided to cut you short as you began to proclaim the Gospel. It is so pathetically obvious that even the ‘conservative’ media cannot tolerate the cross.
  • Katie Couric learned the word ‘eschatology.’ We’re still waiting to hear if she learned anything about eschatology. Maybe she should take some time to listen through S. Lewis Johnson’s messages on the doctrine of eschatology.
  • If you have this in your front yard, I’m going to have to ask you to stop reading the blog. Actually, if you have anything inflatable in your front yard, just step away from the computer, repent, deflate your decorations, and then come back.
  • Looking at who Mary was, and who she was not.
  • There’s a fascinating article published at The Guardian about ‘selling’ God and the concept of hell. It’s fascinating not in an ‘I agree with everything in this article’ way, but in an ‘I think you should read this and be prepared to engage its content’ way.
  • We’ve known for awhile now that the 10th anniversary edition of Jesus Calling has scrubbed away some of its most controversial New Age references.

Nine Ways To Pray For Church Leaders

“Pray they will weep over the sin and failures of God’s people. In my experience, the best shepherds are those who genuinely grieve the spiritual brokenness of the people they lead. Like Nehemiah when he heard about the damaged walls of Jerusalem, they are themselves broken when they see the results of spiritual decline.”

4 Benefits Of Our Adoption

“When we were united to Christ, a transaction and transition of monumental proportions took place. It would be a tragedy if we did not catch a glimpse of the grandeur of what this means — it is nothing less than union and communion with the Son of God in our flesh.”

News: These Charts Show The Political Bias Of Workers In Each Profession (Check out the “media’)

The #oldmedia is strongly statist. NBC, CBS, ABC, The New York Times, BBC, CNN etc etc. They love the state and they are full of you know what. The producers (who determine the content of a show) generally have a very “liberal” worldview (I know this from first hand experience) and largely consider spreading their agenda the point of their journalism. It’s terrible. It’s pervasive. It’s also very very corporate.

Religious Affections: Matt Recker and the Gospel Coalition, Part 7: The Clarity of the Gospel

In the Nick of Time

Earlier this year, Pastor Matt Recker expressed concern that New Calvinists such as Tim Keller are allowing cultural renewal and social action to dethrone the Great Commission. The real thrust of this concern—and of Pastor Recker’s disagreement with Pastor Keller—has to do with the nature and content of the gospel. The question is important enough to merit taking a closer look at the discussion.

Perhaps I should make it clear that I am grateful for both Matt Recker and for Tim Keller, though I am about to disagree with the latter. Both have attempted to defend the truth—especially the truth of the gospel. Nevertheless, I concur with Recker’s assessment that Keller’s discussion of the gospel tends to obfuscate its meaning and leads toward a pattern of ministry that partially displaces the gospel with a program of social improvement.

Podcast: The Stand and Greet Time – Rainer on Leadership #083

Podcast Episode #083

Subscribe via iTunes • Subscribe via RSS • Subscribe via Stitcher

This week’s podcast covers the biggest post we’ve ever had at ThomRainer.com. It was on how churches drive away guests, and more than 750,000 of you have viewed the post. In this podcast, we dive deeper into the reasons these items drive away guests and further evaluate the stand and greet time.

Also mentioned in the post is a new resource that releases Monday, December 8, on the keys to retaining guests more effectively. You can sign up to find out more about that here.

Some highlights from this week’s episode include:

  • I’m consistently amazed at the lack of signage in churches. It’s like they expect people who’ve never been to their facility will know exactly where to go.
  • It’s worse to have a bad church website than to not have one.
  • Church facility issues may seem petty to some, but in the end, they can turn people away from hearing the gospel.
  • There is a sense that the stand and greet time is a contrived exercise.
  • Every pastor tells me they are the friendliest church in town.
  • Church members should be thinking about others, especially guests.
  1. Having a stand up and greet one another time in the worship service.
  2. Unfriendly church members.
  3. Unsafe and unclean children’s area.
  4. No place to get information.
  5. Bad church website.
  6. Poor signage.
  7. Insider church language.
  8. Boring or bad service.
  9. Members telling guests that they were in their seat or pew.
  10. Dirty facilities.
  1. Many guests are introverts.
  2. Some guests perceive that the members are not sincere during the time of greeting.
  3. Many guests don’t like the lack of hygiene that takes place during this time.
  4. Many times the members only greet other members.
  5. Both members and guests at some churches perceive the entire exercise is awkward.
  6. In some churches, the people in the congregation are told to say something silly to one another.
  7. Not only do some guests dread the stand and greet time, so do some members.

The Historical St Nick

Zwinglius Redivivus

Pete Enns wrote this last year and it’s worth sharing this-

Nicholas was born in the 3rd century in Asia Minor. He used his entire inheritance to help the poor, sick, and children in need. He gave in secret, expecting nothing in return. He attended the Council of Nicea in AD 325. Greatly loved for his faith, compassion and care, he is venerated in both East and West.

OK., that’s pretty cool. He gave away his entire inheritance to those in need. I never knew that. I thought he had elves helping him or something, but I guess I got that part wrong.

Nicholas saved young women from slavery, protected sailors, spared innocents from excecution, provided grain in a famine and rescued a kidnapped boy.

Nicholas was a beast. Mother Teresa, Oskar Schindler, and Samuel L. Jackson all rolled into one. What an absolute crushing beast.  I like the icon–his eyes. He is looking off to the side, like he’s annoyed about having…

Does the Bible say that you should forgive someone who does not repent?

Kevin Lewis, a professor of Theology and Law at the conservative Biola University, was asked this question:

Recently, I was reading Dr. Kenneth Bailey’s “Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes” (IVP press 2008). When commenting on Matthew 6:12-13, he writes,

“It is a common human assumption that the violator of the rights of others must ask for forgiveness before the wronged party can be expected to accept the apology and grant forgiveness…But Jesus here asks the person wronged to forgive the one responsible for the wrongdoing when when there is no confession of guilt… There is a voice from the cross that echoes across history to all saying ‘Father forgive them for they know not what they do.’ Neither Pilate nor the high priest nor the centurion offered any apology to Jesus, yet he prayed for divine forgiveness…(p.125)”

Quit Kidding Yourself: Part 1 (James 1:19–21)

Joe Quatrone, Jr.

Growing up in ChristThe emphasis in this section is on the dangers of self-deception: “deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22); “deceives his own heart” (James 1:26). If a Christian sins because Satan deceives him, that is one thing; but if he deceives himself, that is a far more serious matter.

Many people are deceiving themselves into thinking they are saved when they are not. Jesus said, “Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name and in Your name drive out demons and in Your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!” (Matt. 7:22–23).

But there are true believers who are fooling themselves concerning their Christian walk. They think they are spiritual when they are not. It is a mark of maturity when a person faces himself…
