Sao Paulo’s water supply in ‘Critical’ Condition as Drought bites

Posted: 18 Jan 2015 08:07 AM PST

Brazil Dry Sao PauloHalfway through the rainy season, the key reservoir for the southern hemisphere’s largest city holds just 6% of its capacity, and experts warned Friday that Sao Paulo’s authorities must take urgent steps to prevent the worst drought in more than 80 years from drying it out. The system of reservoirs and rivers that provide water to millions in the Brazilian metropolis have received less rainfall than hoped during the first weeks of the wet season, raising fears they will not be replenished as hoped. Rainfall during the first two weeks of January totalled just 7.1 centimetres, well below the historic average for the month of 27.1cm. The biggest problem is in the Cantareira water system, which is the largest of six reservoirs that provide water to some 6 million of the 20 million people living in the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo city. Cantareira is now down to 6% of its capacity of 1tn litres, the water utility Sabesp said on its website. Of the remaining five systems, Alto Tiete is at 11% of capacity, Rio Claro 25%, Alto Cotia 30%, Guarapiranga 40% and Rio Grande 70%. More

russia-meteorite-amur-region.siThe residents of Russia’s Amur region woke up Sunday morning to notice an unusual celestial phenomenon – a shining object flying through the sky, leaving a white trail that some social media users compared to the Nike logo. “[The trace of the alleged meteorite] looked like a trace of the plane, only bigger and much brighter,” an eyewitness from the city of Belogorsk in the Amur region in Russia’s Far East told the local Amur.info website. The swoosh was seen near one of the military units in the city. The object then exploded but the thunderclap-like sound was heard only eight minutes later, people said. More

Swiss lose battle in currency war that could spread

Posted: 18 Jan 2015 07:43 AM PST

8161aca2e8dbd0f8cdf5098cb99c694acd744f31Historically neutral Switzerland’s foray into the global currency war ended in defeat this past week after its central bank left markets shell-shocked by abandoning the franc’s exchange rate floor, analysts said. But with major shifts in monetary policy under way, the currency war is hardly over and the front lines will move to other countries. “The Swiss central bank was the first to throw itself into the currency war, (and) it is the first to capitulate,” said Christopher Dembik, an economist at Saxo Bank. The capitulation amounted to abandoning the Swiss franc’s exchange rate floor of 1.20 francs to the euro, which the Swiss National Bank had imposed more than three years ago to stop the franc from appreciating too much against the European single currency. But on Thursday the SNB raised the white flag and surrendered, letting the franc float. The shock announcement was felt across the globe as the franc immediately strengthened by 30 percent against the euro. It has since settled at around parity with the euro, which is a 15 percent gain in value since the floor was removed. More

Ukraine sends tanks to fight rebels in airport battle

Posted: 18 Jan 2015 07:40 AM PST

Part-PAR-Par8062873-1-1-0Ukraine rushed tanks to the front lines in a counter-offensive against pro-Russian rebels fighting for control of Donetsk airport, with heavy shelling shaking the key eastern city on Sunday. At least six people were killed, including four soldiers, houses were destroyed and electricity was cut for many homes and businesses as explosions repeatedly ripped through parts of the Donetsk region. Most of the blasts rang out from the area surrounding Donetsk airport northwest of the city as the army and rebels battled for control of the blackened and wrecked site hit by months of on-off clashes. But some were also heard closer to the city centre, and Donetsk officials reported “massive damage to housing stock, infrastructure and communications of the city”. More

176 Killed in Malawi Floods, 200,000 Displaced

Posted: 17 Jan 2015 09:55 PM PST

Malawi FloodsFlooding in Malawi has killed more than 176 people, displaced at least 200,000 others, left homes and schools submerged in water and roads washed away by the deluge, according to the vice-president of the southern African country. Downriver in neighbouring Mozambique, floodwaters have left at least 38 dead, according to the Mozambican news agency AIM, displaced tens of thousands and damaged the main road linking the north and south of the country. While the Mozambican government’s flood plan, announced last year, may have lessened the damage, Malawi was caught off guard. Dozens of people are missing in Malawi, with at least 153 unaccounted for in the worst affected southern parts of the country, the vice-president, Saulos Chilima, said. “It’s a very bad situation,” he said, speaking at a press conference in Malawi’s commercial capital, Blantyre. Measles outbreak spreading beyond Disneyland visitors

Posted: 17 Jan 2015 09:47 PM PST

la-093905-he-0223-gordon3c-amc-jpg-20150117The measles outbreak that began at Disneyland during the holiday season is now spreading beyond people who contracted the disease at the theme park, with those patients now exposing others after they arrived back in their hometowns, health officials said Saturday. There are now 51 confirmed cases of the highly contagious virus across California, three other states and Mexico, and the Orange County Health Care Agency said the rapid rise in cases indicates “the measles outbreak will continue to spread.” Health officials had hoped to contain the outbreak to Disneyland guests who visited the park between Dec. 17 and 20, when the virus spread from perhaps a single infected person or an ill family. But Orange County is now reporting six new cases of measles involving people who did not visit the park during that period. State officials said there were two more such cases in Ventura County and one in Alameda County. More

Satan’s School Bus Infuriates Mother!

Posted: 17 Jan 2015 08:39 PM PST

o-BAEL-570Look, school buses are hell. You build up the courage to finally try out that Old Navy Tech Vest at school, and the other kids on the bus are your first round of critics. And they are a tough crowd. Not only does Jeremy immediately knock your fashion sense, but he takes your lunch money and sits next to your crush, Carol. Suddenly you realize that your new duds aren’t the answer to your popularity problems, and it’s going to be a long ride to school. You ruined my shot, Jeremy. YOU RUINED IT. Anyway, it’s important to note the hellish experience children sustain on the bus, because one mom in Memphis, Tennessee, is super upset about what’s going on outside a school bus. Robyn Wilkins snapped a photo of the bus, which features brake lights shaped as stars — or, in her view, Satanic pentagrams — and sent it to local reporters to get the Jesus Christ back in those flashing lights. “Anyone who fears a God, if not God and Jesus Christ, should be outraged,” she told WMC Action News. “If you can’t put a cross on there, you cannot put a pentagram on it.” More

Alabama Officials Pass Resolution Declaring Winfield a ‘City Under God’

The resolution was passed in late December at the prompting of Mayor Randy Price, who urged city council to make the statement and take a stand for Christ.

Astronomers Say Two Unknown Planets May Lurk Beyond Pluto, Two more planets are circling the sun beyond Pluto

Posted: 17 Jan 2015 08:01 AM PST

pluto-moonsA new study suggests that at least two more planets are circling the sun far beyond Pluto’s orbit. The analysis is based on calculations of bodies located well past Neptune, regions of space that include the Kuiper Belt, the scattered disk and the Oort cloud. Instead of randomly flying through space, 12 of these so-called “extreme trans-Neptunian objects” (ETNO) show some unexpected symmetry.  “This excess of objects with unexpected orbital parameters makes us believe that some invisible forces are altering the distribution of the orbital elements of the ETNO,” Carlos de la Fuente Marcos, with the Complutense University of Madrid, said in a press release. ‘Sleeper cells’: 3,000 in Turkey linked to ISISPosted: 17 Jan 2015 07:55 AM PST

0About 3,000 people have been linked to Islamic State militants in Turkey, says a police report. The data has prompted a red alert over possible attacks, including in NATO and the West, by the so-called “sleeper cells” of the jihadist group. A Turkish police intelligence report has urged surveillance of about 3,000 people to observe their connections with the jihadists, sources told the Turkish Hurriyet Daily News. “There are around 500-700 Turkish citizens who have joined the ranks of [Islamic State],” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said earlier this week. Those 3,000 “possible links” to jihadists are additional to the group of about 700 Turkish fighters who are already fighting alongside Islamic State. The criminal records of foreign fighters who joined the IS militants via Turkey were absent, said the report, adding that it had created problems with security sources. More

New law would move U.S. Embassy to JerusalemPosted: 17 Jan 2015 07:49 AM PST

vvThe US Senate is taking another stab at changing the White House’s policy of keeping the American Embassy to Israel out of Jerusalem. On Tuesday, US Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Dean Heller (R-NV) proposed a law that would remove the president’s authority to invoke national security as a reason to ignore Congressional resolutions on moving the embassy to Jerusalem. According to the measure, called the Jerusalem Embassy and Recognition Act of 2015, the White House would be required to identify Jerusalem as the capital of Israel even before the embassy is physically moved. 3 more California counties sign on to State of JeffersonPosted: 17 Jan 2015 07:44 AM PST

The petitions from Tehama, Glenn and Yuba counties, expressing their desire to withdraw from California because of a perceived lack of representation in the Legislature, bring the total number of breakaway counties to five. Jeffersonians rallied at the Capitol last August after presenting their initial declarations from Siskiyou and Modoc counties. Mark Baird, the movement’s chairman who hails from Mugginsville in Siskiyou County, said that when he filed the petitions with state officials Thursday, “They didn’t know what to do with them. The Greek Bank Runs Have Begun – Request Emergency Liquidity AssistancePosted: 17 Jan 2015 06:57 AM PST

97020169The first time the phrase Emergency Liquidity Assistance, or ELA, was used in the context of Greece was in August 2011, when Greece was imploding, when its banking sector was on (and past) the verge of collapse, and just before the ECB had to unleash a global coordinated bailout with other central banks including global central bank liquidity swap and unleash the LTRO to preserve the Eurozone. As a reminder, this is what happened back then: “In a move described as the “last stand for Greek banks”, the embattled country’s central bank activated Emergency Liquidity Assistance (ELA) for the first time on Wednesday night.”  “Although it was done discreetly, news that Athens had opened the fund filtered out and was one of the factors that rattled markets across Europe. At one point Germany’s Dax was down 4pc before it recovered. The ELA was designed under European rules to allow national central banks to provide liquidity for their own lenders when they run out of collateral of a quality that can be used to trade with the ECB. It is an obscure tool that is supposed to be temporary and one of the last resorts for indebted banks.” Raoul Ruparel of Open Europe told The Telegraph: “The activation of the so-called ELA looks to be the last stand for Greek banks and suggests they are running alarmingly short of quality collateral usually used to obtain funding.” He added: “This kicks off another huge round of nearly worthless assets being shifted from the books of private banks onto books backed by taxpayers. Combined with the purchases of Spanish and Italian bonds, the already questionable balance sheet of the euro system is looking increasingly risky.”  More

Franklin Graham on TV tells Muslims: Convert to Christianity — ‘Christ will forgive’Posted: 17 Jan 2015 06:52 AM PST

12242014_beltway-graham8201_c0-44-932-587_s561x327The Rev. Franklin Graham told Muslims during a nationally televised interview on Fox News that they should convert to Christianity — that Jesus Christ will forgive and save them. “I want to say something to all the Muslims that may be watching this that are confused and are afraid themselves,” Mr. Graham said during an interview with Sean Hannity. “I want them to know that God loves them and that Jesus Christ died for their sins — and Christ will forgive them and heal their hearts.” Mr. Graham also told those of the Islam faith that they didn’t have to resort to jihad and murder — that there was another way, The Blaze reported. “They don’t have to die in a jihad,” he said, the media outlet reported. “They don’t have to kill somebody else to please God. God loves them, and he will accept them through faith and through his son, Jesus Christ.” And one more thought: Mr. Graham cautioned that the Islamic world was “being torn apart by its own hand,” he said, The Blaze reported. His suggestion? The United States ought to stop giving money to any nation or group that pushes for the killing of innocents, he said during the newscast. More

Biggest Reservoir for Brazil’s Largest City Running Dry.Posted: 16 Jan 2015 05:20 PM PST

brazil-1Halfway through the rainy season, the key reservoir for the hemisphere’s largest city holds just 6 percent of its capacity, and experts warned Friday that Sao Paulo authorities must take urgent steps to prevent the worst drought in more than 80 years from drying it out.  The system of reservoirs and rivers that provide water to millions in this city have received less rainfall than hoped during the first weeks of the wet season, raising fears they won’t be replenished as hoped. Rainfall during the first two weeks of January totaled just 2.9 inches (7.1 centimeters), well below the historic average for the month of 10.7 inches (27.1 centimeters). The biggest problem is in the Cantareira water system, which is the largest of six reservoirs that provide water to some 6 million of the 20 million people living in the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo city. Cantareira is now down to 6 percent of its capacity of 264 billion gallons (1 trillion liters), the water utility Sabesp said on its website. More

Obama Raises Specter Of War With Iran If Congress Imposes New SanctionsPosted: 16 Jan 2015 05:15 PM PST

Obama_Raises_Specter_Of_War-e8ec7542f0ce2c4c3a96e7a0b99d0cb4President Barack Obama strongly warned Congress on Friday against leveling additional sanctions against Iran and even suggested they could lead to war. “We have shown that we are credibly trying to solve this problem and avert some sort of military showdown. In that context, t here is no good argument for us to — undercut — undermine, the negotiations,” Obama said. The White House and Iran are currently locked in negotiations for Iran to roll back its nuclear program in exchange for the US and others lifting their sanctions against the Iranian government. These negotiations have been repeatedly extended and frustrated members of Congress said they fear Obama will not strike a tough enough deal. Even Democrats have backed legislation to strengthen the sanctions against Iran. Speaking at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron, Obama said such legislation would likely result in the negotiations collapsing. He argued Iran could easily return to building a military-grade nuclear reactor — setting the stage for an aggressive showdown. “They would be able to maintain that the reason that they ended negotiations was because the United States was operating in bad faith and blew up the deal,” he said. ” The likelihood [that] the entire negotiations collapses is very high. And if that happens, there is no constraint on Iran at that point going back and doing exactly what it had been doing before: … developing a heavy water reactor, that once built is extraordinarily difficult to dismantle.” More

WVW-TV Why America is Decreasing, Who is Bringing Her Down, and How the Financial, Religious, and Political Power is Shifting to a Euro-Centric Empire (Part Two)

In this program Brannon Howse reveals how Georgetown Professor and mentor of Bill Clinton, Carroll Quigley, explained how Cecil Rhodes would use his vast fortune to begin organizations and scholarship programs, of which Clinton was a recipient, for the purpose of creating a world government.

Rhodes was influenced by his Oxford Professor John Ruskin who desired a world government that he referred to as a British Empire. Ruskin also influenced Sidney Webb who went on to form the Fabian Socialist Society in order to carry out the goal of his mentor John Ruskin. It was from the influence of the Fabian Socialist Society that the Labor Party was created. Is a Revived Roman Empire with a euro-centric influence rising? Was this euro-centric, revived Roman Empire predicted in Daniel 2 and Daniel 7?

Much that God has Satan seeks to duplicate. Satan has a false church, false gospel, false miracles, and he is seeking to build a false and earthly kingdom. Daniel chapter two tells us that Satan will achieve such a kingdom for a time but that God’s kingdom will crush the kingdom of Satan and the Kingdom of God will last forever.

The historical images, history, contemporary facts, and Biblical insight in this program will keep your attention and make the hour program seem like mere minutes. Yet, most importantly this program will help you to understand, or have reaffirmed, that while the world seems to be spinning out of control the fact is that God has predestined the events that are unfolding.

The Youth Experts Are Wrong and You Were Right.

If you helped us to underwrite the cost of our free Contend 2015 student Worldview Weekend then we want you to join us in rejoicing over the fruit from this Biblical ministry you helped to make possible.

High school and college students are interested in being treated like young adults, they are not interested in gimmicks, and they want to be equipped with biblical truth and we have the testimonies to prove it. We had a full house with students from 25 states. We had a very large stack of handwritten testimonies but we have chosen these to share with you in hopes it will encourage you as so many of you were part of making this conference possible. We did not even take an offering at the conference because we wanted the students to know we had no financial agenda. We even gave them three Biblical worldview books for free. Make your plans now to join us for Contend 2016 starting at 6pm CT on Thursday night December 31st and ending at noon on Saturday January 2, 2016. Click here to read the testimonials:

Read This Powerful Testimony:

I came to the Contend conference last year as an unbeliever. I was a sophomore college student majoring in psychology. After, and during the conference, I began to see how messed up my major was, and the foundations of psychology, among many other topics. I began to see the truth and the truth was not secular psychological theory but God’s Word. My mind was imploding and I felt my whole life was a lie. I decided to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and never looked back. I went back to college with a new worldview, search and seeking the truth; not speculation.

I saw my major for what it was; a lie. Psychology doesn’t truly help people. I also had an eating disorder when I was 12, and struggled with it for many years despite psychiatrists and hospital treatment. After the conference, and seeking truth, I realized my eating disorder came from my sinful, selfish heart, not my parent’s divorce, and not TV shows.

This conference is amazing. It speaks about truth and real current issues. The information is not sugar coated. The speakers tell you how it is. I would recommend this conference to anyone and everyone. I am truly grateful for this conference.

In my neuroscience class they don’t even know how psychiatric drugs work for sure; it is all speculation and a money game with pharmacy companies. My prof admitted this!

The Ineptitude of Moral Equivalence

Last week a newspaper office in Paris was attacked by gunmen who murdered twelve people. The specific targets were the paper’s editorial cartoonists, and the motive for their murder was the fact that they had often drawn cartoons disparaging Mohammad.

While the attack was swiftly condemned by many political leaders—France’s own president called it “an exceptional act of barbarism”—it was also met by many people eager to protect the reputation of Islam. The fact that the murders were done to avenge the reputation of Mohammad and that the politically correct response was to protect Islam’s reputation is ironic indeed.

New Math on College Campuses

The New York Times published a provocative news story called “The New Math on Campus.” No, it’s not about the failure of Common Core to teach arithmetic; it’s about the changing ratio of males to females on most college campuses.

Long ago when I went to college, campuses were about 70 percent male, and until 1970 it was still nearly 60 percent. Today, however, the male percentage has fallen to the low 40s on most campuses.

On the Shoulders of Giants

It was Isaac Newton who famously penned the sentence, “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” In saying this, he meant to communicate his respect for and dependence on the great minds that had come before him. Whatever advances he was able to make, he recognized that he stood upon the work of those who had come before him, giving him greater views of the heights he was to ascend.

Worldview Weekend Radio with Host Brannon Howse:

Guest: Dr. John Whitcomb joins us for another episode of Ask Dr. John. Question: Please help me understand Gen. 3:7 and Luke 24:31. In both of these passages it speaks of people whose “eyes were opened”. What does it mean to have one’s eyes opened? If they were not physically blind, how can their eyes be opened? Can we also have our eyes opened if we are followers of Christ? Question: How many people did God speak directly to or through in the Old and New Testaments? Question: My pastor teaches that the gift of prophecy in 1 Cor. 14:1 and following is not the same as teaching, though it is similar. I do not see any difference. What Scripture is there to support or disprove the view that they are different gifts? If they are different, what is the difference?”

Question: How should believers approach those who claim to be Christians but clearly show no evidence of true faith? Should we pray for them and approach them with Scripture, or leave them alone? Question: Can a person who does not believe that the Bible is the final authority be truly saved? Question: At what age are children considered to be of the “age of reason”? What age is no longer considered “innocent”? Question: Will believers have the full knowledge of the Scriptures in heaven? Question: Will the majority of all people who have ever lived be saved or unsaved? Question: How did people find energy to serve God in the Old Testament without the permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit? Topic: We take your calls.

Encounter God’s Truth with Dr. John Whitcomb:

Today on “Encounter God’s Truth,” Old Testament teacher Dr. John Whitcomb provides us with an overview of the life of the prophet Daniel one of his Biblical heroes. He and host Wayne Shepherd present this program in the hope that the Lord God will do a work in each of our hearts as we focus on this encouraging example of faith during difficult days. Dr. Whitcomb concludes by showing how Daniel’s prophecies tie to the book of Zechariah which we will study again beginning next week. All the intricate details that we find in both books remind us that God’s Word is true from the beginning to the end. May God bless you as you share this broadcast.

Crosstalk:

This edition of Crosstalk focuses primarily on the details surrounding the removal of Atlanta Fire Chief Kevin Cochran. Cochran was terminated from his duties following a city investigation. The complaint by Mayor Kasim Reed deals with a pro-family book that Cochran authored for his men’s Bible study that upholds the biblical view of sexuality and contradicts the homosexual agenda. Cochran received a one month suspension without pay in November and then it was announced that he would be fired. Before losing his job, Cochran was required to complete sensitivity training and was prevented from distributing copies of his book on city property.

Steel on Steel with John Loeffler:

In the wake of the tragedy in Paris this week, John takes a look in his boralogue at islamaphobia and how hate speech laws are a farce and an impediment to freedom of speech. He also addresses the need for Islam to modernize and whether the rest of us can survive the violence until then.

First up on the program is Joy Brighton (www.joybrighton.com), former Wall Street trader and author of the book Sharia-ism is Here. She will examine the slow stealthy growth of radical Islam in the United States, and how that growth is being fueled both by political correctness and a general ignorance that there’s a problem.

The Justin Peters Program:

Rest for the Weary – part 3
We are doing a series on Matthew 11:25-30. In last week’s program we discussed the context of our passage, specifically verses 20-24 in which Jesus denounced the cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum. In today’s program we will talk about Jesus’ public effusion of praise to the Father for hiding the things of the Gospel. From whom did He hide them and why did He hide them? We usually think of God revealing truths, not hiding them. So, what is going on here?

President of South Carolina Baptist Convention calls for Perry Noble and NewSpring to correct ‘problematic positions and statements’

President of South Carolina Baptist Convention calls for Perry Noble and NewSpring to correct ‘problematic positions and statements’

Video of the Week

The Remorse of Abortion and the Healing of the Gospel, Lecrae, John Piper, & John Ensor. This is a bit on the long side (37 minutes), but is a fascinating and convicting conversation. Hip hop artist Lecrae joins Pastor John Piper and president of PassionLife John Ensor to candidly discuss abortion, urban life, justice, and race. Here’s is an excerpt from Lecrae’s autobiographical song, “Good, Bad, Ugly.”

Sex on my brain, and death in my veins
Had a main thing, we stayed up ‘til 2 (Smokin’)
Waking and thinking we naked, my body was loving it
Soul was hating it, man
Time and time after time, our bodies were close (the girl was so fine)
Heard a heart beat that wasn’t hers or mine
The miracle of life had started inside
Ignored the warning signs
Suppressed that truth I felt inside
I was just having fun with this, I’m too young for this
I’m thinking me, myself, and I
Should I sacrifice this life to keep my vanity and live nice?
And she love and trust me so much that whatever I say, she’d probably oblige
But I was too selfish with my time
Scared my dreams were not gonna survive
So I dropped her off at that clinic
That day, a part of us died

Articles of the Week

Five Habits to Keep Your Marriage Strong, Leigh Ann Dutton. Most marriages don’t become beautiful or nasty because of one dramatic event. Instead, they are the sum total of thousands of daily decisions, conversations, and seemingly mundane habits. These aren’t a panacea, and only scratch the surface of what it means to love, forbear, and forgive. But it’s a strong start.

How I Almost Lost the Bible, Gregory Alan Thornbury. “My freshman year…we learned that the Bible was a pastiche of traditions and sources, cobbled together mainly in the second century. … We learned how to do form and redaction analysis, a method of study that assumes the author of a biblical text is motivated by a theological agenda rather than by reporting what he had seen. We simply ‘knew’ that the book we were holding in our hands did not have a direct connection to the apostles whose names were associated with the Gospels and Epistles. For me, this dose of higher criticism was nearly lethal. Any sense that the Bible was divinely inspired and trustworthy, or that the creeds had metaphysical gravitas, started to seem implausible. … I was approaching something close to New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman’s own story of losing faith.”

Five Ways to Protect Yourself from Cold-Hearted Familiarity with God’s Word, Mike Leake. Cold-hearted familiarity: that’s a startling phrase, especially when the topic is God’s Word. Yet for many of us, we can easily be led away from regular time reading Scripture by the devilish little lie, “You already know it.” The diagnosis is clear enough. So what are we to do? Leake offers five answers. They aren’t easy, but follow them and you won’t find yourself yawning at Scripture.

Which Bible Promises Are for Me? Jen Wilkin. The Bible is full of promises, thousands of them. And as Wilkin points out, few thing in life are as comforting as promises made and kept. But how can I be sure that the promise I’m lifting out of Deuteronomy (or Psalms, or Matthew, or Titus) actually applies to me and my situation today? Wilkin offer six common pitfalls to avoid.

This ‘n’ That

Between Perry Noble’s ‘word from the Lord’-derived Christmas Eve sermon, and Beth Moore’s ongoing claims to personal, direct revelation, and others within professing evangelicalism who would affirm their personal conversations with the God of the universe, there has been quite a bit of chatter (actual chatter, not ‘gee, I think that might have been God giving my heart a little squeeze’) about the nature of how God speaks today and whether or not impressions, instincts, and nudges can originate from Him.

Don’t put God in a box!‘ is an argument I hear quite often (and, quite frankly, I’d really appreciate it if continuationists, postmoderns, and undiscerning Christians would adopt a new slogan. This one is pretty tired). Well, how about I contain Him not in a box, but a book? A book that, incidentally, He Himself wrote as holy men were carried about by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21).

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. (Hebrews 1:1–2)

For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”– and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. (2 Peter 1:16–21)

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16–17)

Is that okay? Is it okay for me to ‘limit’ God, as it were, within the confines of His holy Word? Look, I get it. Sometimes we just ‘feel led’ (if you’ll forgive the expression) to do or say something, and it turns out that God, in His providential, sovereign plan and timing, ordained that circumstance to further His perfect plan. But that doesn’t mean that God was talking to you personally and directly outside of Scripture. Let’s be careful with our terms, shall we, brethren? Because when we say that ‘God told me’ to do or say or write something, we tread into very precarious waters.

Think with me for a moment—if I say, ‘God told me’ to write this blog post, what does that ultimately imply? It implies that this blog post has all the authority of the written Word of Scripture. ‘No, no,’ you argue, ‘God speaks to me, but I would never elevate that experience higher than the Bible.’

My friend, if you think that God is speaking to you directly and personally, but you do not elevate that as high as Scripture, then you sin. Does God ever speak with less authority? Does He say, ‘Hey, Jim, I want you to make note of this and act on it, but just know that I’m not speaking with my full authority as the Lord of all here’? Really, if you think about it, to view God in this way is to view Him as little more than the pope. The pope, after all, holds quite a bit of earthly authority, but He only speaks ‘infallibly’ when he’s speaking ex cathedra (in Catholic theory and tradition, anyway). Do you see how illogical and ridiculous it is for us to apply the same thinking to the Lord and King of the universe? Worse, do you see how utterly blasphemous it is for us to do so?

Causing further confusion amid these claims to revelation is the fact that the recipients of these alleged ‘words from the Lord’, while claiming to not elevate such words above Scripture, also do not want anyone to question those words. After all, these words and thoughts came from God. Again, this returns us to the issue of authority. Either God speaks authoritatively or He does not. You cannot have it both ways, so pick one. If you believe He speaks authoritatively at all times that He speaks, and you believe that He is still giving revelation today, then buy a Bible with a lot of blank sheets in the back so that you can keep adding to Scripture each time your liver shivers. If you don’t believe He speaks authoritatively, then stop calling Him God and stop waxing eloquent about what you think He told you. In either instance, if you think He is still providing ongoing revelation, you probably should stop talking, open your Bible, and do some prayerful study and examination.

Now…wait…hold on just a minute…is that you, Lord? What’s that? You want the readers to stop listening to the murmurs of their deceitful heart and hungry tummy and instead want them to pause and enjoy their week in review (kind of)? Well, okay then. I can’t argue with that. Here’s your week in review (kind of):

  • I am not responsible for the hole that you are about to put into your wall by slamming your head into it with great force. Also, there are no refunds on the 7 minutes of your life that you are about to lose.
  • If this is true about David Jeremiah’s Turning Point, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised.
  • What is the Gospel? No, really…do you know?
  • In light of recent events…
  • I definitely agree that taking notes by hand helps you process and retain more information.
  • Don’t go to this conference. No arguments! Don’t. Go.
  • It’s like Hollywood is trying to redeem itself or something.
  • Fred Butler takes a look at Perry Noble’s apology. Dr. James Duncan also offers a detailed and helpful analysis.
  • I knew about this awhile ago, but it’s getting some new publicity. And now Tyndale House is going to stop selling the book altogether. Great news. Thankful for Alex Malarkey and his mother, Beth.
  • Thankful also for this post by Phil Johnson, where he offers a timeline of the Malarkey fiasco and sets the record straight.
  • “Male and female and ‘whatever‘, He created them.” Wait…what?
  • Mortification of Spin’s Todd Pruitt weighs in on Beth Moore’s nonsense.
  • The sad thing is, you can find a lot of this same Pope-abilia at the local Family Not-So-Christian Store.
  • Here’s your weekly dose of adorable (thanks, Rick!).
  • You need to listen to this Phil Johnson sermon.
  • Excellent. I’m pretty excited about June 21 being International Yoga Day. I could use another day off of work. Wait—we do get to take off work for this, right?
  • Cameron Buettel continues GTY’s series discussing standards for shepherds: be respectable and hospitable.
  • This was weird. As in, a very weird choice of individuals to consult on this topic. And it was utterly unhelpful. And weird. Did I already say that?
  • I really enjoyed this interview Mike Abendroth did with his son, Luke.
  • The purposes of God in your pursuit of godliness:

Discernment: Flatteries of false teachers

We are told in many verses about the false prophets and false teachers coming to deceive the people. They use false words, flatteries, and smooth speech. The antichrist will be the most full version of a false prophet ever, being full of sin. His name will be Man of Sin. (2 Thess. 2:3)

All the false prophets and teachers that come before the Man of Sin will be less potent, but no less dangerous. They use the same methods. Satan sticks with what works.

Sometimes I discuss false teachers with friends. I might mention Beth Moore or Billy Graham etc. One thing that I hear most often when I discuss this with people is “But they talk about Jesus!”

This tells me we need to look at how false teaches deceive by using rhetoric, oratory and speech. Earlier this week I looked at false teachers’ motivations. Now let’s look at their methods.

Be Skeptical of Dr. Oz’s Remedies and Rick Warren’s “Plans”

Pastor Rick Warren and Dr. Oz, via WorldMag.com

Dr. Mehmet Oz, who is a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, author and host of a successful TV show, has involved himself in some, um, questionable cures for what ails you.   According to a Fox News report, a recent study showed that “Half of Dr. Oz’s health advice is bad.” Die-hard Oz fans will more than likely ignore the study results and continue tuning into his TV show for advice from him and the panel of doctors that appear regularly, even knowing that Oz and the other doctors often recommend products straight out of Quacksville.

Our idols would never steer us wrong, would they? I mean, Oz wouldn’t allow his fans to purchase remedies that have little basis in fact or that many in the scientific community agree are bogus. Test the “cures” and you will find that, in some cases, what they recommended is on par with the sort of thing you’ll find in a witches brew – bat wings, spider legs and crow bones.

From the Fox News report:

vitaminsThe researchers found that about half of the suggestions offered by these shows either contradicted what other scientific studies had found or had no verifiable evidence at all to stand behind them, and that potential conflicts of interest were seldom mentioned.

The study looked at 40 random episodes from each show—instead of simply, as Belluz points out, “cherrypicking the worst offenders”—to get the fairest assessment. In general, each episode offered up about a dozen health recommendations, so the researchers were able to cull 479 health tidbits from Dr.

Oz’s show and 445 from The Doctors. Most of the shows’ suggestions involved dispensing general medical advice, followed by non-weight-loss dietary tips; the Doctors professionals tended to repeat the mantra of seeking out a health care provider.

But while the benefits of many of the claims were talked about in a general way, specific benefits and magnitude of those benefits, possible drawbacks, and costs were virtually ignored, the study found.

The researchers’ conclusion? “Consumers should be skeptical,” and we should ask ourselves “whether we should expect medical talk shows to provide more than entertainment.” (Dr. Oz’s “magic bean” recently lost the study that supported it.) (Fox News’ link.  Emphasis added.)

Meet Mehmet

This is not the first time I’ve reported on Dr. Oz.  In early 2011, I wrote a piece to alert the Church that  SBC pastor and best-selling author Rick Warren had elicited the help of three doctors to write a plan (Warren is all about plans) to promote health and fitness for his church located in Lake Forest CA.  What struck me was that all three doctors hold New Age/New Thought beliefs. Moreover, the trio is involved in what some deem questionable medical practices.  One of the docs Warren asked to help with his endeavor to lose much needed weight and start his journey to better health was Dr. Mehmet Oz.  The end result was The Daniel Plan.

I noted back in 2011 in my piece titled “Rick Warren Introduces the ‘Devil Plan’” that:

Some Here, Some There — January 16, 2015

by Dan Phillips
SourceHere y’go, in the last post before the Conference!
BTW, catch me for a full hour on The Janet Mefferd Show today, Friday, from 3pm-4pm Texas time.

  • When someone uses “God is not the author of confusion” in reference to feelings of confusion in discerning God’s personal will, you can rest assured that you are in the presence of someone to whom “exegesis” is, at best, a Scrabble word.
  • You’re welcome.
  • Todd Pruitt brings the goods on Beth Moore, who he calls a prophet for an undiscerning church. Like Pat Robertson, like Todd Bentley, like Perry Noble, like Mark Driscoll, like Joseph Smith, like Ellen G. White, and like a host of others, Moore has “Jesus” tell her things He doesn’t tell anyone else.
  • You see, this is why the Sufficient Fire conference is so needed. Go now, find out if any registrations are still available, and come.
  • Did I mention Perry Noble? You all know about Noble’s crazy statements about the Ten Commandments and Hebrew. Well now he’s issued an apology of sorts, which in itself is rare enough in the God-tells-me-stuff-He-doesn’t-tell-you set.
  • You see, parenthetically, if God tells you stuff straight-up…why bother studying Hebrew?
  • Concerning Noble’s apology, Fred Butler has offered his thoughts in a careful, nuanced, helpful post sensitively subtitled It’s All God’s Fault I’m an Idiot.
  • Which all just goes to show you that…
  • Also, James Duncan responds to Noble’s “apology.”
  • Over at The Gate of Crippledness (got my Hebrew on), Steven Ingrino offers a detailed survey of books he does and doesn’t find helpful in expounding the Gospel of Mark.
  • At that same blog, the gate was left slightly ajar, allowing this stray entry.
  • I will admit I’m small enough that I wondered if delicate souls who have blocked me and removed Pyro from their blogrolls — but who do still read Cripplegate — had a pea under their mattress that day.
  • Carl Trueman defends Beth Moore.
  • OK, not really. But it was fun writing it, and it was fun picturing Carl’s eyebrows as he read it.
  • So the government will test the religion of homeschooled kids and see if they need to jail the parents. Where, East Germany? Nope; right here, in Oba-merica. In Virginia, no less. [See update in comments, below.]
  • Here are the doors to the dream church, in many Christians’ minds:
  • On Texas in the early days: “Texas seemed to have more Baptists than people…” Texas hasn’t changed. Nor have Baptist math-skills. Interesting read.
  • Phil Johnson updates and comments on the controversy surrounding the book The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven, written portentously enough by a gent called Malarkey.
  • From Pulpit and Pen comes some very troubling backstory. (h-t Robert Sakovich)
  • I invented a cartoon superhero when I was a yoot, trying to draw. His name was Malarkey Man. Little-known fact. You’re welcome.
  • In our family, we (or at least I) would call this “yet another unmarketable talent.”
  • Lyndon Unger, the Bare-knuck Canuck, continues getting Biblely about “shacking up” (i.e. serial fornication by roommates), in part two of his series.
  • I would not be caught dead using (or thinking) the “the Gospel is true because it’s good news) argument. That said, I’m having real trouble understanding how “Your life is short and meaningless and the universe cares nothing for you” is better news than the Gospel.
Updates possible through noon.

Religious leaders gather outside of the Georgia State Capitol to protest a decision by Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed to terminate Atlanta Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran.

A false revival is coming. Do you hear laughter?

"Holy Laughter" at a Rodney Howard Browne event

Today in the modern church a big storm is brewing, and with it we’re seeing:

  • More direct revelation and extra-biblical experiences
  • More signs and wonders/mysticism
  • More merging and melding of religions and movements
  • More entertainment-driven services
  • More New Age conferences blending with “Christian” leadership
  • More false christs

Warren Smith is the author of the book, “Another Jesus” Calling: How False Christs are Entering the Church through Contemplative Prayer.” Is a must read. He is also the author of several pamphlets available at Lighthouse Trails, including the brand new, False Revival Coming Part I: Holy Laughter or Strong Delusion? We’ve reposted it with permission, and it is available for purchase now at Lighthouse Trails Publishing.

One of the names you’ll hear mentioned on today’s program is Rodney Howard Browne, considered the father of the “Holy Laughter Movement.”
Here is a very disturbing clip of what this looks and sounds like:

Browne has not repented, nor has he gone away. For the past several summers (and this July as well), he has been a political darling of the New Apostolic Reformation and Washington D.C. Daughters of the American Revolution event called, CELEBRATE AMERICA DC, with Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, and Michelle Bachman. “We came here on assignment. God told me to go to the United States,” Browne said. “He said, ‘I am sending you as a missionary to the United States.’” He said there is a coming revival and the church must get ready.  Source:

Words of Comfort: Intellect and conscience.

“And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening” (Acts 28:23).

Notice that Paul used both prophecy and the Law of Moses in his evangelism. Prophecy appeals to a man’s intellect and creates faith in the Word of God. As he realizes that the Bible is no ordinary book—that it contains numerous indisputable prophecies that prove its supernatural origin—he begins to give Scripture credibility. However, the Law of Moses appeals to a man’s conscience and brings conviction of sin. A “decision” for Jesus purely in the realm of the intellect— with no biblical knowledge of sin, which comes only by the Law (Romans 7:7)—will almost certainly produce a false convert.

Why “Let Go and Let God” Is A Bad Idea

“Keswick theology is pervasive because countless people have propagated it in so many ways, especially in sermons and devotional writings. It is appealing because Christians struggle with sin and want to be victorious in that struggle now. Keswick theology offers a quick fix, and its shortcut to instant victory appeals to genuine longings for holiness.”

Why I Don’t Date Men Who Are ‘Willing’ To Save Sex For Marriage

“A man who is “willing” to save sex is a man whose choice to abstain from nonmarital sex likely isn’t underlain by much other than the absence of my consent. I want a man who wants a chaste woman, who holds a high bar for me because he wants me to become the woman God designed me to be.”

What do I do if I don’t love my spouse anymore?

Biblically-based love is an action, a sacrificial commitment to others, and you don’t need to “feel” it to do it. Let’s take a look at what the Bible says about love.

Should Christians attend homosexual weddings?

by Matt Slick

Whether or not Christians should attend homosexual weddings is a sensitive topic. From what I see in Scripture, a Christian should not attend such a wedding since it would risk being a support and approval of something that is against God (Lev. 18:22; Rom. 1:26-27; 1 Cor. 6:9-10). As a Christian, and as an apologist, I must stand firm and represent God properly. Sometimes taking a stand means to reject ungodliness, even if it means being ridiculed.

Alabama Officials Pass Resolution Declaring Winfield a ‘City Under God’

(CN) — Officials in an Alabama city recently passed a resolution declaring the municipality of Winfield a “city under God.”

The resolution was passed in late December at the prompting of Mayor Randy Price, who urged city council to make the statement and take a stand for Christ.

“I feel like we need to stand up for what is right,” he told AL.com. “Our forefathers said ‘One nation under God’ and we went so far away from that. There are not enough godly people involved in day-to-day decisions.”

Two Dead, Hundreds Injured as Filipino Crowd Throngs Idol Being Marched Through Streets

(CN) — Two people are dead and hundreds more were injured as the result of massive throngs that followed and sought to press up against a centuries-old statue of Christ that was marched through the streets of Manila as part of an annual Roman Catholic celebration called the Feast of the Black Nazarene.

While the large number of those filling the streets could not be counted with surety, police in the Philippines estimate that at times more than half a million Filipinos participated in the procession, which takes place every Jan. 9th in the city. Roman Catholics carry white cloths and seek to touch the wooden carving of Jesus carrying the cross out of their belief that it possesses healing powers.

Pastor Exhorts Montana Lawmakers to Obey God Rather Than Men

(CN) — A Wisconsin pastor presented a sermon before the Montana legislature this past weekend, teaching on what is known as the Doctrine of Lesser Magistrates, a historic and biblical doctrine that dates back to the times of Moses and Daniel.

Matt Trewhella, pastor of Mercy Seat Christian Church in Milwaukee, had been invited by the group Project Liberty Tree to present this year’s election sermon at the Montana state house in Helena following the release of his book “The Doctrine of Lesser Magistrates.” The book focuses on the refusal of civil magistrates to obey laws that are immoral or ungodly, believing that divine laws trump human commands.

Why Jesus Spoke in Parables

airō

multitude

The doctrine of election should humble us like no other doctrine. It is evident from the following two passages that Jesus imparted life only to those to whom the Kingdom is given, as only those would have ears to hear to understand the meaning of the parables.

If all the multitude would be saved, Jesus would have either given all the multitude understanding or He would have explained the meanings of the parables to them. But He only gave His disciples understanding and continued to speak to the multitude in parables that they “would hear and not understand” (v. 14-15):

Then the disciples came and said to him, ‘Why do you speak to them in parables?’ And he answered them, ‘To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. – Matthew 13:10-11

On Friendship: A Review of “The Company We Keep”

The Reformed Reader

company-color-big-300-jpg.jpeg In the past few years, I’ve been thinking on and off about friendships.  It seems to me that many people don’t have good, close friends whom they trust, confide in, and help.  I’ve noticed that a lot of people would rather be alone or not get too close to others; a text or Facebook message is fine, but spending time together in a meaningful way is not always desired.  Why is this the case?  I suppose it has to do with several things, including social media as well as the fact that people are too busy (and too selfish?) to cultivate deep friendships.

If you’ve been thinking about friendship, desire good friendships (or if you think negatively about friendships!) I highly recommend this booklet: The Company We Keep by Jonathan Holmes.  It’s a brief (just over 100 small pages), concise (to the point), and clear (outlined and explained well)…

Baptist Press Silent on SBC’s Heaven Scam, While Major Media Talks

Polemics Report

Well, the world has now heard about Alex Malarkey’s brave journey and the opposition he has faced by Christian book retailers. For Alex, his journey to reveal his truth began over two years ago. For the Pulpit & Pen, our journey regarding this specific incident began on December 23 when Director of Lifeway Research, Ed Stetzer, decided to marginalize us by calling us “Fifteen Angry Calvinists.” The background on what has come to be known as #the15 can be found here, here and here. The next day, he tweeted out a veiled statement, calling us trolls. Soon, #the15 became a movement. Alex Malarkey is a part of that movement.

We were told we would never be listened to because of our tone. We felt that our tone was honest and well-deserved. But apparently, in much thanks to Alex, Lifeway’s ways have been brought to light and his story…

Tyndale House Publishers Knew The Malarkey Book Was A Fraud

Polemics Report

In response to the revelation that Alex Malarkey has recanted of his claims to have visited heaven, and repudiated his book “The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven”  and in light of Tyndale releasing this statement: which suggests they had JUST NOW learned about this fraud “We are saddened to learn that Alex Malarkey, co-author of ‘The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven,’ is now saying that he made up the story of dying and going to heaven. Given this information, we are taking the book out of print.”

From Phil Johnson:

” For the record, Tyndale House Publishers knew full well more than two years ago that Kevin Malarkey’s book contained fabricated stories. I have a stack of correspondence between Beth Malarkey and Tyndale in which she tried to make Alex’s true voice heard. They completely blew her off. So in early June last year, I sent the…

The Christward Collective: A Baker’s Dozen of Pastoral Lessons

As I approach the fifth anniversary of my ordination to pastoral ministry, I confess that last five years have been a maelstrom of emotional highs and lows–as well as a school of previously unknown experiences. My own experiences and observations of pastoral situations have helped produce my baker’s dozen of lessons for seminarians and new pastors. This has been a learning and growing time for me–as much as I trust it has been for the congregation that I pastor. My hope is that these observations may prove useful to pastors and church members alike to help give them pastoral perspective into the often unseen aspects of church life:Read more

CultureWatch: Are We All Children of God?

by Bill Muehlenberg

A very common – but mistaken – claim made all the time is that we are all God’s children. Whether a person is a Christian or non-Christian, it is asserted that everyone is a child of God. While this may sound nice and inclusive, and appeal to many, it is of course profoundly unbiblical.

Sure, we are all created by God, and without God none of us would even exist. So only in that sense at best can we speak of all being children of God. And Scripture does affirm that much. But most people making this claim mean far more than this. They claim that God is our father, and we are all his spiritual children, regardless of what we believe or how we live.

This is simply the stuff of theological liberalism, not biblical Christianity. The idea of the fatherhood of God is not to be found in the plain teachings of Scripture, but in the deceptive teachings of liberal Christians. As was said last century about the religious scene in America’s northeast, this liberal theology comprised three elements: the fatherhood of God, the brotherhood of man, and the neighbourhood of Boston.

Unitarians and others were keen to stress how we are all God’s children, and that God would turn away no one. When they make such claims however they come up against a mountain of biblical data which tells us otherwise. Indeed, a simple perusal of Scripture would easily dispel this false notion.

This is so clearly spelled out in the Bible that it seems unnecessary to pen a whole article on this. Simply affirming basic biblical doctrine about the fallen, sinful nature of mankind, and how only those who come to Christ in faith and repentance can be reconciled to God the Father, should make this apparent.

But given what a widespread error this is, let me just offer some of the many passages from the New Testament which speak to this issue of God and his true children.

GTY Blog: Setting the Record Straight

Code: B150116

by Phil Johnson

More than two years ago, I wrote an article titled “The Burpo-Malarkey Doctrine,” critiquing the insanely popular I-Saw-Heaven-and-Here’s-What-It’s-Like genre of Christian best sellers. We posted that article on the Grace to You blog in anticipation of a revised and expanded edition of John MacArthur’s The Glory of Heaven.

One of the books I critiqued in that blog post was The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven by Kevin Malarkey. That book, published by Tyndale, is the story of Malarkey’s son, Alex, whose spinal column was completely severed at the neck in a horrific crash at an Ohio intersection on the way home from church one Sunday morning. Alex’s survival is a remarkable providence, and his courage and endurance through the whole ordeal is a true wonder. His experience is a compelling story, apart from the heaven-and-back element. Doctors said he would not survive, but Alex pressed on through numerous surgeries, countless inconveniences, and unbelievable adversity, always with a smile and a grateful heart.

Even at age six, recovering from an injury that would ordinarily be fatal, and coming to grips with total paralysis, Alex kept an unusually positive frame of mind. He pondered (as anyone would) troubling metaphysical questions like Why? What next? and What is God’s plan in this? One of the ways six-year-old Alex dealt with the trauma and the questions (while totally immobile and heavily sedated) was by imagining what had happened to him and what it all might mean. The tedium of hospital life was excruciating. So he answered people’s questions with stories he knew would get and hold their attention. Those stories became the seeds that planted the idea for Alex’s father’s book about heaven.

Shortly after “The Burpo-Malarkey Doctrine” was posted on our blog two years ago, Alex’s mom, Beth Malarkey, contacted me to acknowledge that John MacArthur’s analysis is correct: “These modern testimonies . . . are simply untrue.” She and Alex had already been doing everything they could to get the word out that The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven told a largely imaginary story, and that most of the details had been greatly embellished and exaggerated in the writing. Publicity about the book had incited a cult of afterlife enthusiasts and hangers-on who wanted to canonize Alex and idolize him as a mystical seer with an open connection to heaven. Alex was uncomfortable with the feeling of moral and spiritual responsibility his sudden fame had thrust on him. Still a child, he nevertheless understood that the truth was more important than his own reputation.

The publisher refused to pull or alter the book. Alex’s father, thrilled with the book’s best-seller status, stood with the publisher. Even a pastor from whom Alex sought counsel said he thought the book was “blessing” people. He advised Alex to be quiet and let it ride.

Before John MacArthur’s new edition of The Glory of Heaven went to press, John added a section noting the disclaimers Alex and Beth Malarkey had published in their futile attempts to make the truth known. In a footnote on page 55, for example, John wrote:

Although Kevin and Alex Malarkey are listed as joint authors on the book’s cover, Alex has publicly disclaimed the book online, calling it “1 of the most deceptive books ever.” Beth Malarkey, Alex’s mom and Kevin’s wife, describes the book as “a beautiful testimony distorted, twisted, packaged and used as business.”

Reviewing The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven at length in Appendix 2, MacArthur noted:

The book’s cover lists Kevin and Alex as joint authors, but the copyright notice is in Kevin’s name alone, and it is clearly Kevin who tells the story. Also on the book’s cover, in large type, are the words “a true story.” But as we shall see, there is considerable evidence that Kevin Malarkey has embellished, exaggerated, and even fabricated the supposed visions and experiences he attributes to Alex. (p. 199)
. . . . . . . .
Kevin Malarkey has overlaid his son’s testimony with so much that is unbiblical that the book considered as a whole is dangerously misleading. Alex himself posted a similar assessment of his father’s narrative at a webpage publicizing the book, but the comment was quickly deleted.  Beth Malarkey reposted Alex’s comment at her own blog, saying “Alex voiced accurately what the book was about but he was silenced.” Like Alex, she emphatically disavows many of the claims that are made in her husband’s book, adding this: “Buyer beware. There is only one absolutely infallible and ‘true’ book: God’s Word! It does not need fancied up or packaged for sale. It is incredible as it stands!” (pp. 200-201)

Beth Malarkey perfectly summarized the issue in three sentences, saying: “Alex never concluded he was in heaven. He was a small boy who experienced something extraordinary. The adults made it into what would sell to the masses” (footnote, p. 201).

The Glory of Heaven (2nd ed.) was published in early 2013, so the true story about The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven has been in circulation and widely available for two years. Justin Peters became aware of Mrs. Malarkey’s plight last year and tried many times to call attention to Alex’s disclaimers. But the publisher continued selling and promoting the book with a cover that boldly (and falsely) proclaims it “a true story.”

Last week, Alex Malarkey himself weighed in with a short open letter.

An Open Letter to Lifeway and Other Sellers, Buyers, and Marketers of Heaven Tourism, by the Boy Who Did Not Come Back from Heaven

Please forgive the brevity, but because of my limitations I have to keep this short.

I did not die. I did not go to heaven.

I said I went to heaven because I thought it would get me attention. When I made the claims that I did, I had never read the Bible. People have profited from lies, and continue to. They should read the Bible, which is enough. The Bible is the only source of truth. Anything written by man cannot be infallible.

It is only through repentance of your sins and a belief in Jesus as the Son of God, who died for your sins (even though he committed none of his own) so that you can be forgiven may you learn of heaven outside of what is written in the Bible . . . not by reading a work of man. I want the whole world to know that the Bible is sufficient. Those who market these materials must be called to repent and hold the Bible as enough.

In Christ,
Alex Malarkey

Alex’s letter is articulate. It is gospel centered. It has the clear ring of truth.

When Alex has tried to make similar statements on Facebook or in other online forums, he has been routinely shouted down, his comments deleted, and his fragile voice silenced. We want to give his testimony maximum exposure, because Alex is right: The truth is more important than how anyone feels about it.

One of the top online reviews of The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven says: “I can tend to be a little skeptical of otherworldly experiences, but when I hear it from the words of a child, I am much more open to the idea. A child is not going to be capable of making up these kinds of images and keeping his story straight for month after month after month.”

That, sadly, is what lots of readers think. What they don’t realize is that there is a massive industry behind books like these, heavily populated with decision makers who care more for filthy lucre than for truth. Employed in that industry are some mercenaries who have no scruples whatsoever about making up tales like these, polishing and embellishing them, and buttressing them with details designed to enhance the illusion of believability. It’s the very worst kind of pragmatism gone to seed. What’s “good” is defined by what sells. Scripture calls it “the teaching of Balaam” (Revelation 2:14).

Christian publishing is long overdue for reformation.

RZIM: The Gospel Coalition Q&A with Vince Vitale on ‘Why Suffering?’

Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale sign copies of their book Why Suffering? in Norcross, GA

why suffering

The Gospel Coalition’s Matt Smethurst interviewed Vince Vitale about his and Ravi Zacharias’ new book, Why Suffering?: Finding Meaning and Comfort When Life Doesn’t Make Sense. Smethurst says, “renowned apologist Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale look with unflinching focus at many of the hardest questions we face as humans. The result is an unusually fresh resource that will challenge the skeptical, equip the faithful, and comfort the hurting.” In the Q & A with TGC, Vitale talks about what people need during pain, the book’s new approaches to suffering, Nietzche’s take on ancient Greeks and more.

Here’s the first question:
What motivated you and Ravi to write Why Suffering?
It’s common to think there are only one or two Christian responses to the problem of suffering. It’s common to think there’s nothing new to be said on the topic. It’s common for a sharp division to be made between responding to the question of suffering intellectually and responding to it emotionally. As Ravi and I had conversations on this topic, we found we were united in wanting to question all three of these assumptions. We wanted to write something that would be helpful for seekers and Christians alike, for those with intellectual questions and for those who are hurting…”

JAS: Encouraging Words Concerning the Rapture (Video)

What are the passages in the Bible that actually address the Rapture? One of the most important is the passage in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. Upon describing the event and what will take place, Paul concludes that believers were to encourage one another with these words. In this program, we’ll take a closer look at this and other passages to be encouraged at the Bible’s details on this important topic.

JAS: Jesus Promises to Come Again (Video)

In John 14 Jesus promised He would come back again. However, many believers miss the other details Jesus shared in this passage about where He would go, what He will do when He is away, and what will happen when He returns. His promise to return includes a great deal of information that can encourage us in our Christian walk today.

In this program, you’ll learn these details and how they can help us to better appreciate Christ’s promise to return as well as what we can look forward to in the future. Join Dr. Ankerberg with guests Dr. Renald Showers and Dr. Jimmy DeYoung in this fascinating discussion regarding the Rapture.
