14 Signs That Most Americans Are Flat Broke And Totally Unprepared For The Coming Economic Crisis

When the coming economic crisis strikes, more than half the country is going to be financially wiped out within weeks. At this point, more than 60 percent of all Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, and a whopping 24 percent of the country has more credit card debt than emergency savings. One of the primary principles that any of these “financial experts” that you see on television will teach you is to have a cushion to fall back on. At the very least, you never know when unexpected expenses like major car repairs or medical bills will come along. And in the event of a major economic collapse, if you do not have any financial cushion at all you will be a sitting duck. Yes, I know that there are millions upon millions of families out there that are just trying to scrape by from month to month at this point. I hear from people that are deeply struggling in this economy all the time. So I don’t blame them for not being able to save lots of money. But if you are in a position to build up an emergency fund, you need to do so. We have been experiencing an extended period of relative economic stability, but it will not last. In fact, the time for getting prepared for the next great economic downturn is rapidly running out, and most Americans are not ready for it at all. The following are 14 signs that most Americans are flat broke and totally unprepared for the coming economic crisis… (Read More….)

Obama’s ‘Deal’ Would Allow Iran To Start Building Nuclear Bombs In About 10 Years

Should Iran be permitted to build as many nuclear bombs as it wants just a decade from now? Shockingly, this is precisely what the “deal” that the Obama administration is currently negotiating would allow Iran to do. Even the Washington Post, an enthusiastic cheerleader for Obama all these years, says that this deal is the equivalent of “giving Iran everything it wants“. Sadly, ever since negotiations with Iran began several years ago, the stance of the Obama administration has been to retreat, retreat and then retreat some more. Back in 2005, the western world was insisting that Iran was not going to be allowed to have any centrifuges at all. But now we are going to allow Iran to keep all of the nuclear infrastructure that it has built up, and a decade from now it will be allowed to start building nuclear weapons. This is a country that is run by genocidal Islamic fanatics that consider the United States to be “the Great Satan” and that wants to wipe the nation of Israel off the face of the planet. Under no circumstances should Iran ever be allowed to build even a single nuclear weapon. If Obama goes through with this deal, he is betraying the United States, Israel and the entire western world. THE FOUNDATION

Will Congress Take the Immigration Off-Ramp?

Senate Republicans are starting to concede on the efforts to authorize Department of Homeland Security funding and stop Barack Obama’s executive overreach on immigration. Given the judicial off-ramp, why should they try? A Texas judge issued an injunction, and if DHS loses its funding the executive branch would make it a political nightmare. Monday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell introduced a bill that opposes Obama’s executive actions but does not strip those diktats of funding. It’s an effort to gain votes from sympathetic Democrats to override a certain veto. On the Senate floor, McConnell said, “Some Democrats give the impression they want Congress to address the overreach. But when they vote, they always seem to have an excuse for supporting actions they once criticized. So I’m going to begin proceedings on targeted legislation that would only address the most recent overreach from November. It isn’t tied to DHS’ funding. It removes their excuse.” It used to be that the greatest power against an out-of-control president Congress had was its control of the purse. Clearly, however, Republicans are struggling to stop a presidential action a court already said is unconstitutional. McConnell’s answer may be their only way out. More…

Only Now Does DHS Secretary Brings Up Terrorism Threat

An African terrorist group, the al-Qaida-affiliated al Shabab, called for attacks on U.S. shopping malls, including the Mall of America in Minnesota. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson addressed the issue, saying, “We’ve seen this a number of times now where a group will call for an attack on a country, on a specific location. So, we’ve got to be vigilant. … I am not telling people to not go to the mall. I think there needs to be an awareness. There needs to be vigilance. We’re in a new phase right now, and that involves public participation in our efforts.” So why is this news? Terrorists are known for calling for one attack or another against the West (anyone remember when al-Qaida called for jihadis to start forest fires?) and DHS has operated the See Something, Say Something campaign for years. Johnson only talks about the threat on national television because, at the end of the week, the funding for his department will dry up unless lawmakers pass a funding bill with or without monies for Barack Obama’s immigration actions. Nothing like a good crisis, eh? More…

‘Plenty of Reasons That Suggest Obama Might Not Love America’

The Washington Post’s Ed Rogers is a “sufficiently intimidated, mostly tame Republican,” and he “won’t say” he shares Rudy Giuliani’s opinion of Barack Obama’s love of country. But Rogers also says there are “plenty of reasons that suggest Obama might not love America.” For example, he writes, “It’s easy to imagine Bill Clinton and either President Bush getting teary-eyed at the proverbial Fourth of July parade, as the veterans wave and flatbeds filled with 4-H kids roll by. It’s hard to imagine Obama in a similar situation.” Far more important than simple imagery, however, Rogers points to Obama’s “willingness to accommodate America’s traditional enemies and at times, disregard old friends, [which] has been a nagging and persistent pattern” in his presidency. Of Obama’s lecture about the Crusades, Rogers says, “It was just another example of how the president appears willing to try to understand — if not justify — the actions of those who hate America. When the president is slow to condemn our enemies, it raises doubts about what he really thinks of their case against America.” In other words, if Obama loves America, he’s not exactly offering a lot of proof. Hollywood Blames Constitution for Pay Gap

Women don’t get equal pay in America, says actress Patricia Arquette, and she blames the Founders. “To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights,” Arquette said in her Oscar acceptance speech. “It’s time to have wage equality once and for all. And equal rights for women in the United States of America.” The supposed pay gap has been largely discredited, but never confuse a liberal (especially one from Hollywood) with facts. Worse, Arquette went on to blame the men who fought to secure Liberty and who authored our Constitution. “It’s inexcusable that we go around the world and we talk about equal rights for women in other countries when we don’t have equal rights for women in America,” Arquette lectured. “And we don’t because when they wrote the Constitution, they didn’t intend it for women.” In the Heritage Foundation’s Guide to the Constitution, Tiffany Jones Miller explains, “Contrary to popular belief, the United States Constitution of 1787 is a gender-neutral document. Throughout the original text, the Framers refer to ‘persons’ — as opposed to ‘male persons’ — and use the pronoun ‘he’ only in the generic sense. The word ‘male’ did not even appear in the Constitution until the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified in 1868.” In other words, Arquette suffers from something common to men and women on the Left: ignorance.

Al Sharpton Named in Racial Discrimination Suit

For years, race-baiter Al Sharpton has made bank by telling companies to pay him to avoid being accused of racism. Now, Sharpton himself is named in a $20 billion lawsuit accusing him of facilitating racism at Comcast in order to “whitewash Comcast’s discriminatory business practices.” The National Association of African-American Owned Media sued over the merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable, alleging such a merger would discriminate against black-produced media. “Despite the notoriously low ratings that Sharpton’s show generates,” the suit said, “Comcast has allowed Sharpton to maintain his hosting position for more than three years in exchange for Sharpton’s continued public support for Comcast on issues of diversity.” Ouch. While Comcast calls this suit frivolous, Sharpton may not fare well in the near future. There are rumors swirling at MSNBC that the company is struggling because leftist opinion isn’t making the money it used to. Sharpton may lose his 6 p.m. weekday slot for a less desirable time on the weekend. We know what Sharpton would say of the change: It’s discrimination! More…

RIGHT ANALYSIS

The Clinton Machine Is Greased and Ready

2015-02-24-c92306f7.jpg

Ever since Bill and Hillary Clinton first stepped into public life, the American people have been subjected to their never-ending series of shady political dealings and legal and ethical problems. Hillary’s upcoming presidential run will be no exception. In fact, her latest adventure could top them all.

A recent report by The Wall Street Journal’s James Grimaldi and Rebecca Ballhaus reveals that Hillary’s involvement with the Clinton Foundation is the focal point of a number of questions about possible influence peddling and selling access to the federal government to foreign entities.

The organization, recently renamed the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, was founded after Bill left office in order to advance humanitarian causes around the world. Well, that’s the foundation’s stated mission. In reality, it was designed to keep Bill’s political muscles flexed and open up new avenues of opportunity for Hillary, whose own run for the presidency was as inevitable as the sunrise when the organization was founded 14 years ago.

In that time, the Foundation has taken in millions of dollars in donations from corporations and individuals from around the world to fund its programs. It has hosted major events in the U.S., in Davos, Switzerland at the World Economic Forum, and other locales to show the world just how busy the Clintons are in trying to save it. And it keeps the Clinton family on the move. They racked up $8.5 million in travel expenses in 2013 alone. Is the Foundation really a busy hive of humanitarian activity, or is it, as Kimberly Strassel suggests, the most powerful campaign Super PAC ever devised? Judge for yourself.

Despite Barack Obama’s personal request for Bill to quit raising money from foreign governments while Hillary was Obama’s secretary of state, the Foundation proved to be quite adept at hauling in corporate cash during her tenure.

Some considered Hillary to be a champion for American business during her time at the State Department. It’s nothing new for secretaries of state or other international representatives of the U.S. government to work for favorable conditions for American companies overseas. But the perception of a quid pro quo is undeniable, and it’s alarming.

The Wall Street Journal’s analysis of public and foundation disclosures reveals that at least 60 companies which lobbied the State Department during Hillary’s term as secretary of state donated more than $26 million to the Clinton Foundation. At least 44 of those companies took part in philanthropic endeavors coordinated by the Clinton Global Initiative worth some $3.2 billion. Hillary also created 15 public-private partnerships managed by the State Department that involved at least 25 of the aforementioned 60 companies.

Corporate donations to politically connected organizations like the Clinton Foundation are not illegal so long as they are not in exchange for favors. There is no direct evidence of that here, but, after years of watching Bill and Hillary operate, that doesn’t mean much.

The paper trail is vast and complex — no doubt deliberately so. The timeline of donations from companies that dealt with Secretary Clinton shows no distinct pattern that would raise a red flag at first glance. Some donations came to the Foundation after dealings with Hillary’s State Department; sometimes the donations came before. Were the Foundation an actual political PAC, it would be obligated by law to disclose in great detail the level and origination of contributions, what they were for, and how they were distributed. But the Foundation is not a PAC, which helps it disguise some of this.

Access to money and the support of powerful friends both foreign and domestic is what could put Hillary in the White House, and she and Bill know it. It sure won’t be her charm. And, since it’s illegal for foreigners to contribute to U.S. elections, the Foundation offers a clever way to circumvent election law and presents an opportunity for unfettered access to the White House should Hillary win in 2016.

What kind of damage can the Clinton Foundation’s web of donations from and connections to companies and foreign governments do to Hillary’s campaign? That’s difficult to say because Bill and Hillary have set this one up quite nicely. And they are, as always, unfettered by the perception some will have over the arrangement. As George Will notes, “One of the great strengths of the Clintons all along … was a complete inability to be embarrassed.”

Will is correct in assuming that the Clintons don’t care what the Foundation looks like. They will use its humanitarian mission as a shield against any accusations of wrongdoing. But former Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs admits, “I think there is no doubt that the appearances are awkward at best. They’re going to have to do something in the very short term to deal with this in a way that puts it off the table.”

Gibbs’ words speak volumes. It won’t be a matter of ending the practice of taking in money from questionable sources that strain the integrity of the Clinton presidential campaign. It will be a matter of getting it “off the table.” The Leftmedia will come in handy there. Leftist news outlets are already working their magic. The Wall Street Journal story that opened this can of worms last week could have been the top political story. Instead we watched as numerous talking heads got a case of the vapors over what Rudy Giuliani said about Obama’s lack of love for this country.

Duck, dive, twist and pivot. And then blame someone else. And lie about everything. That’s the Clinton playbook for winning a presidential election. And the game is in progress.

Workers Unions Strike Again

2015-02-24-bdac8722.jpg

A couple of notable strikes are hurting private businesses and their employees, as well as impacting the price of food, goods and fuel nationwide. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) arguably hasn’t been on strike so much as it merely slowed and stalled cargo loads for months now, but a tentative agreement has been reached. For now, ports will resume full operations.

Several California industries suffered from the ILWU’s slowdown. Two such industries are Honda and the North American Meat Institute — the former due to a shortage of parts and the latter due to meat sitting in freezers instead of being shipped to retailers.

Though the work slowdown, conducted by dockworkers at 29 different West Coast ports, didn’t exactly bring the economy to a grinding halt, it’s impact was felt nationwide. It hurt workers whose jobs depend upon imports and exports that have to make it through the dockworkers. In other words, the workers who are not part of the union suffered because of the union — which was probably part of the point.

Unions came about to bargain for competitive wages, and there’s nothing wrong with that in principle. In fact, unions did much good to improve working conditions throughout the 20th century. In some cases, that’s still true. But this particular dispute was a bit extravagant. Why? According to the manager of ports for the Pacific Maritime Association, “[A]n average full-time worker makes $147,000 a year, with very generous benefits on top of that.” That said, “[T]he ILWU says longshoremen aren’t always able to work as many hours as they’d like, putting a typical income at $83,000.”

Walking off a job this good probably sounds insane to the average American worker who earns far less than this, but remember: These longshoremen work in California. While it may sound like they’re getting rich, in reality, the cost of living and excessive taxation in the Golden State mean they’re merely earning a good middle-class income. Dock work is very labor intensive, and these blue-collar workers should be paid well.

But the workers were offered a pay raise of 14% over five years, which averages about 3% per year. What American in the Obama economy wouldn’t jump at that offer? Unfortunately for the longshoremen who would take it, the union wanted more. (Details of the tentative agreement have yet to be released.)

In related news, some workers in oil refineries are on strike. According to CBS News, the United Steel Workers (USW) union announced Saturday “that workers at the largest refinery in the U.S., the Motiva Enterprise refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, started their strike at midnight on Friday.” And “employees at two other refineries and a chemical plant in Louisiana started their strike at the end of Saturday.”

Naturally, whenever refineries shut down or lose productivity due to strikes, gas prices rise, specifically in those states that rely on those refineries for fuel. The American consumer ends up paying for it, which doesn’t bode well for many Americans who are still struggling to make ends meet. Just when we were enjoying low gas prices…

The main problem is unions have become far too political, complacent and corrupt. Their often lavish demands and actions affect the larger economy, negatively impacting private industries and, in turn, Americans’ wallets. Americans don’t want to — and often can’t — pay more for gas, food, retail and other services. But, when unions have so much power and influence over the market, what can we expect?

TOP 5 RIGHT OPINION COLUMNS

OPINION IN BRIEF

Author Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862): “Any fool can make a rule, and any fool will mind it.”

Columnist Thomas Sowell: “If all else fails, critics of Mayor Giuliani can say that a man is entitled to be considered ‘innocent until proven guilty.’ But that principle applies in a court of law. Outside a court of law, there is no reason to presume anyone innocent until proven guilty. It is especially dangerous to presume a President of the United States — any president — innocent until proven guilty. Whoever is president has the lives of hundreds of millions of Americans, and the fate of a nation, in his hands. It is those millions of people and that nation who deserve the benefit of the doubt. We need to err on the side of safety for the people and the country. Squeamish politeness to an individual cannot outweigh that. We need to keep that in mind for the next president, and for all future presidents. We might have been better off if the question of Obama’s patriotism had been raised before he was first elected. Never should we ignore so many red flag warnings again. There is little that can be done about President Obama now, no matter what he does. Impeachment, even if it succeeded, would mean Joe Biden as president and riots across the country. It is hard to know which would be worse.”

Columnist Dennis Prager: “Normative Islam demands theocracy. Does the president not know that? Does he not know that 91 percent of Iraqis and 89 percent of Palestinians believe that Sharia should be the law of the country? That 29 percent of Egyptians believe that suicide bombings are justified? That the majority of Muslim-majority countries have blasphemy and/or apostasy laws? And if he did, would he say they are all perverting Islam? … What Christians, Jews, Buddhists or Hindus are ‘killing innocents in the name of God?’ And what religion other than Islam has scriptures that exhort its followers to slay unbelievers? … The reason Muslims gravitate toward violence is a broken moral compass, not a lack of education or jobs. … Never before in American history has an American president denied the existence of the greatest evil of his day. That should make everyone — except the Islamist terrorists he won’t name — very uneasy.”

Humorist Frank J. Fleming: “There are two things the left hates: 1. Patriotism. 2. Having their patriotism questioned.”

Is There Any Room for Repentance in Our Modern Preaching?

In Acts 20:21 Paul said the he preached a two-fold message—repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. (File)

Article By Eddie Hyatt – I am not one given to visions, but in 1975, upon graduation from Bible school, I saw a vision of a coming great falling away in the church, followed by an even greater revival. I have lived to see the first part of the vision—the falling away—fulfilled. I believe the second part of the vision—the great revival—could be at the door and tarries, perhaps, until we make some much needed adjustments in how we see and present Jesus. When I saw the great falling away I heard the words, “Jesus is a means, not an end.” I knew immediately and instinctively that the falling away would be characterized, not by a rejection of Jesus, but by Him being preached and embraced as a means to personal happiness rather than as the end or goal for life. A means is “how” we reach a desired end or goal. If my end or goal is to travel from Dallas to New York, there are various means at my disposal for reaching that goal. The means may vary but the end is stationary, for the end is what is important. FULL ARTICLE

Are We Opening the Door to a Holocaust in America?

We need pastors to stand up and pray for mercy. (istockphoto.com)

Article By DAVID LANE – Secularism dismisses Christianity as a cultural relic, “A primitive form of knowledge, a consolation for the weak-minded.”1 Not only is this off-target, it’s dangerous. The notion that the State can impart virtue is absurdly false. America’s Founders created a new form of government distinctly rooted in biblical principles. An exceptional people, seeped in biblical thought, biblical values, and God-emulating character birthed what Ronald Reagan called, “the idea of America.” Freedom requires Biblical virtue; righteousness is fundamental to a free people. Secularism has driven Christian faith from the public square. It segregates us dictating: “You can practice your faith in private if you wish. You can worship inside a church building. You can host Vacation Bible School at your church facilities. But don’t bring biblical values to public school, don’t pray, read the Bible or mention Jesus in the classroom, locker room or cafeteria. Don’t speak about Jesus in public and definitely not on television, radio, or mention him in movies.” FULL ARTICLE

What have we come to in America? How about an entire School centered around “Sexual Orientation”? Well that’s exactly what is happening in Atlanta, GA as Atlanta Residents are trying to start a new private school mainly for those who are from gay, lesbian or transgender families and make them  feel comfortable. According to reports organizers have already secured an Intown location but need more money to get the school off the ground. “Pride School Atlanta” is what this facility will be called, Whose mission and purpose is to provide a safe and fun place for students to learn while letting them “be who they are”, Which of course means “Gay, Lesbian or Transgender”.  “I want a place where queer and trans families can bring their kids and not have to worry about being the token lesbian family or the token gay family,” said Christian Zsilavetz.  The married father of two says he will not stop until Pride School Atlanta is a reality. Zsilavetz is one of many joining forces with others in the community to form this school where children can learn without fear of harassment because of who they are or where they came from. “It’s an intentional safe space for kids for youth who want to learn and not have to worry about homophobic remarks every day,” he said. Islamic State in Syria abducts at least 90 from Christian villagesSources indicate that the Islamic State has  abducted at least 90 people from Assyrian Christian villages in northeastern Syria. Reports indicate the militants carried out dawn raids on rural villages inhabited by the ancient Christian minority west of Hasaka, a city mainly held by the Kurds.. This part of Syria is strategically important in the fight against Islamic State because it borders territory controlled by the group in Iraq, where it last year committed atrocities against the minority religious Yazidi community. Many Assyrian Christians have emigrated in the nearly four-year-long conflict in which more than 200,000 have people have been killed. Before the arrival of Kurds and Arab nomadic tribes at the end of the 19th century, Christians formed the majority in Syria’s Jazeera area, which includes Hasaka. FULL REPORT

Pakistanis forced to surrender fingerprints in the name of Security

In the latest efforts to collect biometric information, Pakistan has ordered cellphone users to verify their identities through fingerprints for a national database being compiled to curb terrorism. If they fail to comply their service will be shut off!  Concerned about a proliferation of illegal and untraceable SIM cards, the directive is the most visible step so far in Pakistan’s efforts to restore law and order after Taliban militants killed 150 students and teachers at a school in December. Officials said the six terrorists who stormed the school in Peshawar were using cellphones registered to one woman who had no obvious connection to the attackers. There is 103 million SIM cards in Pakistan — roughly the number of the adult population making efforts to match each person with their cellphone an endless task. Mobile companies have until April 15 to verify the owners of all of the cards, which are tiny chips in cellphones that carry a subscriber’s personal security and identity information. In the past six weeks, 53 million SIMs belonging to 38 million residents have been verified through biometric screening, officials said. If you’re reading this story from America you have to wonder “If and When” this will come to the United States in the name of “Security” ? FULL STORY

Georgia To Create State’s First LGBT-Only ‘Pride School’ Starting At Pre-K

School organizers hope to initially start Pride School Atlanta this fall with classes from Pre-K to 8th grade.

“He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.” Job 41:34 (KJV)

According to Centers for Disease Control’s National Health Information Survey, people claiming to be LGBTQ make up less than 5% of America. That’s a really small percentage. Since LGBTQ people are not able to reproduce naturally, they must either adopt or use a sperm donor to obtain a child. Once having procured the child, indoctrination must then begin if their ranks are ever going to grow. Now they say that they need their own school so training and indoctrination in the LGBTQ lifestyle will be seamless.

These poor kids will be relentlessly exposed to the queer lifestyle and bombarded with queer ideas and “values”. They won’t stand a chance. America in 2015 is a scary place, and getting more bizarre and fragmented with each passing day. Just wait until they add the “P” to the LGBTQ, and they absolutely will.

Even so, come Lord Jesus, and get us out of here…

ATLANTA  — Some Atlantans are joining forces trying to start a new private school where students from all walks of life — mainly those who are from gay, lesbian or transgender families can feel comfortable.

School organizers have already secured an in-town location but need more money to get the school off the ground. School organizers and others in the gay and lesbian community are trying to start Pride School Atlanta.

I want a place where queer and trans families can bring their kids and not have to worry about being the token lesbian family or the token gay family,” said Christian Zsilavetz. The married father of two says he will not stop until Pride School Atlanta is a reality.

Zsilavetz is joining forces with others in the community to form a private school where children can learn without fear of harassment because of who they are or where they came from.

“It’s an intentional safe space for kids for youth who want to learn and not have to worry about homophobic remarks every day,” he said.

Kara Vona has been an educator for 15 years. She is heterosexual, married to a man and proud mother of a 5-month-old little girl. She says she has seen students who cannot learn because of their sexual orientation, and will do what she can to get Pride School Atlanta off the ground.

“It’s not going to make everything better for every kid everywhere,” she said. “This is a small school that’s going to serve a small community but it’s going to serve them really well.”

The school has a location at Rock Springs Presbyterian Church on Piedmont Road, but more funding is needed. They say they hope to keep tuition down to $12,000 per year per student.

The McAvany Intel Memo

[From late 2014: …T]here are more large global political, financial, geostrategic crises happening at one time today than this writer has ever seen in 38 years of writing MIA. We have a crisis at the southern US border as Obama encourages millions of illegals to come pouring into the US from Central America, Mexico, and around the world. There is war raging between Israel and Hamas in Gaza with global media propaganda almost universally blaming Israel for the bloodshed. ISIS, the radical fundamentalist Muslim group in Iraq and Syria, is continuing its violent onslaught – slaughtering tens of thousands of Christians, Kurds, Muslims, and hapless victims of other faiths, and threatening to topple the weak Iraqi government that was established and armed by America.

The Ukrainian/Russian conflict is escalating into a war that could ultimately involve all of Europe and the US, and which could morph into a nuclear war. Race riots are beginning to emerge in America, with the Ferguson, Missouri riots just the first of many that may potentially erupt in coming months as Obama and the extreme political left he represents fan the flames of racial hatred across the US. If racial confrontations should proliferate across the country, this could be the trigger for martial law and a state of national emergency that the political establishment has been preparing for.

And meanwhile, the US and global financial situation becomes more shaky by the day with more countries in Europe, Latin America, and Africa on the verge of national bankruptcy, the seizing of bank deposits and pension assets, and the imposition of financial controls. The world is moving away from the US dollar and the US dominated World Bank and IMF, developing alternate structures, and toward a non-dollar dominated global financial system – that will be using currencies other than the dollar for international trade. A dollar crisis is coming as the world unloads its depreciating US dollars, and this is being fought (unsuccessfully) by the Wall Street/Fed/Treasury combine that sees itself losing control. There are growing indications that the US political/financial establishment could resort to war to stop the financial decline and loss of global power they find themselves in.

Israel Haters Invade Wheaton College

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association worked with Wheaton College to open the Billy Graham Center in 1980. Graham wanted it to be a “world hub of inspiration, research, preaching and training” for the church’s mission of evangelism. If Evangelicals for Middle East Understanding (EMEU) has its way, this hub will also be a platform to undermine Christian support for Israel. The organization’s anti-Israel advocacy is so strong that one of its founders and current advisory board member, Reverend Donald Wagner, is a featured speaker at American Muslims for Palestine’s (AMP) annual conference later this month. The AMP’s list of speakers includes at least 13 Islamists, most of whom are tied to the Muslim Brotherhood and have defended Hamas and acts of terrorism.

For no prophecy at any time was produced by the will of man, but holy men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God” (2 Pet. 1:20-21).

Bowing the Knee to Rome | Worldview Weekend

We live in strange times. When I became a born-again believer nearly four decades ago following thirty years as a Roman Catholic, not one non-Catholic Christian chided me for leaving the Church of Rome. In those days it was fairly obvious to evangelicals that the teachings and practices of Roman Catholicism were at odds with the teachings of the Bible. Yes, there were a few things, at least superficially, that Catholics and Bible-believing Christians held in common. The virgin birth of Christ, which involved the conception of Jesus by the Holy Spirit, is one example. Yet, regarding Christ’s miraculous birth, the Catholic Church added to the virgin Mary the dogmas of her Immaculate Conception, i.e., her having been conceived without sin, and her perpetual virginity. Although those extra-biblical teachings are serious errors, they do not directly contradict the gospel that is essential for salvation.

I would hope that everyone who is reading this article, (particularly if they profess to be Bible-believing Christians) has understood and received the true gospel, which requires the belief (and belief alone) that Jesus, through His sacrificial death and resurrection, paid the penalty for sin in full for every man, woman, and child. That is the gospel that the Bible teaches explicitly in more than one hundred verses and implies in hundreds more. However, that is not the gospel according to the Roman Catholic Church. In truth, the Catholic Church’s opposition to the biblical gospel in its teachings and practices has been made evident through its councils and murderous inquisitions down through history.

Finding God’s will is no deep dark secret – part 1

by Marsha West

“Is it possible for a Christian to know God’s will and not have to agonize over it?” asks CRN contributor Marsha West. Moreover, “Should a believer make a decision without first spending hours in prayer, asking God to reveal His will? Must a Christian avoid making a decision until he or she has a ‘peace about it’? What about waiting for a ‘sign’ from God?” In part 1 of this series, Marsha addresses the visible Church’s slide into mysticism to find the answers to these questions.

10 Biblical Formulas To Change Your Life

Happy Graphic

A few years ago, I was reading Gretchen Rubin’s New York Times bestseller, The Happiness Project, where she narrates a year of trying to become a happier person through implementing the research findings of positive psychologists (“happy scientists” as they are sometimes called).

As I read this fascinating and helpful book, I couldn’t help thinking, “Surely Christians can do better than this!” Although these science-based techniques can be helpful, surely Christian have truths that can produce far more joy. Having written Christians Get Depressed Too, I thought, why don’t I write the flip side, “Christians Can Be Happy Too!” (With the bonus that I might be better known as Mr. Happy rather than Mr. Depression!)

The result is The Happy Christian which I based upon 10 biblical formulas, summarized in the above graphic produced by Eric Chimenti. (Here’s full resolution pdf and jpg for printing).

Over the next week or so, we’ll take a closer look at each of these formulas and graphics, but today I thought I’d present a quick summary to give you a general idea of what’s in the book (you can also get the first couple of chapters free at the website here).

Daily Calculations

Just before we look at the formulas, notice that every formula is based upon a Bible verse. You can see that in the texts underneath each image around the calculator and the texts on the green calculator buttons.

Also, every formula is in “greater than” format. For example, the formula Good News > Bad News, based on Philippians 4:8, is saying make an effort to increase your intake of good news and reduce your intake of bad news in order to produce more of God’s peace in your lives. It’s not saying eliminate all bad news – that would be unrealistic and wrong to even attempt in a fallen world.

But, like all formulas, they require work to work! Just as answers to math questions don’t just drop into our laps, so we have to work at these formulas to get the benefit of the biblical truths in them into our lives.

Last, none of these are one-off sums that we calculate once and then move on. They have to be practiced every day of our lives. But I hope the infographic will make it easier to keep them in front of us and keep calculating them until they become instinctive and healthy habits.

Ten Biblical Formulas

1. Facts > Feelings: This chapter covers how to gather the right facts, how to best think about these facts, and how to enjoy the beneficial impact of this on our emotions and moods. After identifying a number of damaging thinking patterns that are pummeling our emotions,  a six-step plan to retrain thoughts, knock out destructive emotions, and build a shield of protective positive feelings such as peace, joy, and confidence.

2. Good News > Bad News: Philippians 4:8 is applied to our media and ministry diets to ensure that we are consuming and digesting more good news than bad news, and thus enjoy more of God’s peace in our hearts.

3. Done > Do: While we need the demanding the imperatives of God’s law to reveal where we’ve gone wrong, we need to hear even more of the indicatives of God’s redeeming acts to reveal His grace and provision.

4. Christ > Christians: One of the biggest obstacles to evangelism is the inconsistency and hypocrisy of many Christians. It’s also the reason why so many leave the church or are unhappy in the church. But by focusing more on Christ than on Christians, we stop adding up the innumerable faults of Christians and start calculating the inestimable value of Christ.

5. Future > Past: This chapter helps Christians get the most our of looking to the past without falling into nostalgia or guilt. However, the primary emphasis of this chapter is to encourage Christians to have a much more future-oriented faith than is usually the case.

6. Everywhere grace > Everywhere sin:  Without denying the deep and ugly sinfulness that affects and infects everyone and everything, this formula calls Christians to pay much more attention to God’s beautiful work in the world and in all His creatures, resulting in a more positive worldview, more joy in our hearts, and more praise for our gracious God.

7. Praise > Criticism: Although it often feels good to criticize more than praise, a critical spirit and habit is extremely damaging for both the critic and the criticized. This chapter presents ten persuasive arguments for why praise and encouragement should be predominant.

8. Giving > Getting: Perhaps the most unbelieved beatitude in the Bible is, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). By looking at charitable giving, giving in marriage, giving of thanks, and giving in leadership, this chapter presents biblical and scientific evidence to persuade that the beatitude is indeed true.

9. Work > Play: As work plays such a large part in our lives, it’s hard to be happy Christians unless we are happy at work. This chapter explains the bible’s teaching about vocation and proposes a number of God-centered ways in which we can increase our joy at work.

10. Diversity > Uniformity: While staying in our own cultures and communities is safe and easy, a more biblical engagement of other races, classes, and cultures enriches and enhances our lives. This chapter suggests ten ways in which we can increase diversity in our lives, families, and churches, and lists ten advantages of such choices.

The conclusion faces the reality of sin and suffering head-on, and counsels Christians about how to find joy in repentance and in joyful submission to God’s providence. The book finishes with a look towards heaven, a world of happiness, where we can put our calculators away and enjoy God’s provision of perfect happiness.

Instructions to the Dying

AnselmAnselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) is most famous for (1) his ontological argument for the existence of God and (2) the satisfaction theory of the atonement.

But today, I’d like to share my favorite quote from Anselm. It is found in his “Exhortation to a Dying Man,” in which he consoles those who are about to face death by asking them a series of questions.

The first set of questions is aimed at fellow clergy and the second is for laypeople.

* * * * *

Question. Do you rejoice, brother, that you are dying in the Christian Faith?
Answer. I do rejoice. . . .

Qu. Do you confess that you have lived so wickedly, that eternal punishment is due to your own merits?
An. I confess it.

Qu. Do you repent of this?
An. I do repent.

Qu. Do you have the willingness to amend your life, if you had time?
An. I have.

Qu. Do you believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for you?
An. I believe it.

Qu. Do you thank Him [for His passion and death]?
An. I do thank Him.

Qu. Do you believe that you cannot be saved except by His Death?
An. I believe it.

Come then, while life remains in you, in His death alone place your whole trust; in nothing else place any trust; to His death commit yourself wholly; with this alone cover yourself wholly; in this enwrap yourself wholly.

And if the Lord your God wishes to judge you, say, “Lord, between Your judgment and me I present the death of our Lord Jesus Christ; in no other way can I contend with You.” And if He shall say that you are a sinner; you say, “Lord, I interpose the death of our Lord Jesus Christ between my sins and You.” If He says that you have deserved condemnation; say, “Lord, I set the death of our Lord Jesus Christ between my evil deserts and You; and His merits I offer for those which I ought to have, but have not.” If He says that He is angry with you; say, “Lord I set the death of our Lord Jesus Christ between Your wrath and me.” And when you hast completed this, say again, “Lord, I set the death of our Lord Jesus Christ between You and me.”

This done, let the sick man say thrice, “Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit, for You have redeemed me, O Lord, God of truth.” . . .

If he is a layman, he should be questioned after the following manner . . .

Qu. Do you believe the things which belong unto the Christian faith, so far as regards what has been determined by the church?
An. I do believe.

Qu. Do you rejoice that you are dying in the Christian faith?
An. I do rejoice.

Qu. Do you grieve that you have offended your Creator?
An. I do grieve.

Qu. Do you purpose, if God prolong your life, to abstain from offending Him?
An. I do purpose.

Qu. Do you hope and believe, that not by your own merits, but by the merits of the passion of Jesus Christ, you may attain to everlasting salvation?
An. I do.

Then follows the assurance: and then let him say,
If any oppose you, and should object to you, set between him and you the merits of Christ’s passion.

Six Keys for Reaching Millennials in Established Churches – Rainer on Leadership #101

Podcast Episode #101

Subscribe via iTunes • Subscribe via RSS • Subscribe via Stitcher • Subscribe via TuneIn Radio

We get questions from listeners every day for advice and with suggested podcast topics. Recently, a question about Millennials stood out so we used it to jump into our discussion in this episode about reaching Millennials. Doug asked:

What is being done or what should be done to broaden the scope of age to bring younger leaders to the table and therefore inspire them to invest more, be devoted and committed to promoting initiatives that we say we believe will change the world for Christ?

Some highlights from the episode include:

  • Anyone who is intentional about reaching others for Christ will reach more than those who are not. Intentionality is a must.
  • Churches need to understand that Millennials have different views than previous generations on social issues.
  • When Millennials look at a potential church, ministries and opportunities for their kids are major deciding factors.
  • If you want to reach a generation who cares about their children, the church must care about their children as well.
  • Millennials want to have intentional mentors to come along beside them.
  • Churches must offer Millennials opportunities to serve and to lead. Don’t make them “wait their turn.”
  • If your church is relying on the worship style or architecture to reach Millennials, you’re relying on the wrong thing.

The six keys for churches to reach Millennials are:

  1. Be intentional in engaging & understanding them
  2. Be authentic
  3. Offer ministries for their family and children
  4. Offer to mentor them
  5. Offer opportunities for them to serve and to lead.
  6. Have a presence in the community.

How Does a Pastor Evaluate His Sermon One Hour After Preaching It?

This might surprise you, but one of the most dangerous times for a pastor are the hours following his Sunday sermon. You step down from the pulpit still wired and juices flowing as you greet those leaving from the service. Then, like after a good jog, you begin to calm down, your body starts to return to “I’m not preaching mode” which then brings a temporary, but real emotional let down with it.

The Early Church & the Deity of Christ

Though it’s not an exhaustive list, here are 25 quotes from a number of ante-Nicene church fathers demonstrating their belief in the deity of Jesus Christ. These early Christian theologians all lived before the time of Constantine and the Council of Nicaea. As such, they provide incontrovertible proof (from post-New Testament history) that Constantine was not the first person in church history to affirm this doctrine. Rather, the early church believed that Jesus is God from the time of the apostles on.

You Are My Son, and I Love You

But imagine if your Christian growth is grounded in your identity as a son of God, unconditionally loved and accepted because of Jesus? The pressures off to hit the home run everyday. Jesus did that for you. It’s okay to strike out, because God is not basing your relationship with Him on your batting average. You can grow as a Christian and excel in spiritual maturity, not out of fear that God may look down on you in shame and embarrassment, but because God looks on you with sheer delight and unconditional love. What I need every morning I wake is to know that I am a son of God, and my identity is forever secured because of who Jesus is and what Jesus did for me.

So They are Back in the News (Yet Again): Adam and Eve and All That

Many evangelicals believe in “de novo” creation, a quick and complete formation of all species including homo sapiens, rejecting evolutionary development from common ancestors. Walton asserts that the Bible “does not necessarily make a de novo claim for human origins.” His proposed scenario could include “some theory of evolution” as compatible with the Bible, he says, but not necessarily the thinking of Darwin disciples “as it exists today.”

Rob Bell, Gay Marriage, and the Movie Tombstone

So, what does Bell think is a better guide for sexual ethics than the Bible? Personal experience. Why would you choose the Bible, says Bell, “when you have in front of you flesh-and-blood people who…love each other and just want to go through life.’ In other words, what should guide our decisions is the personal sexual experiences of people. We should follow what they feel is right. If this is how they find “love” then great. Thus, on Bell’s view, there are no sexual ethics. There are just people’s personal sexual preferences. Welcome to a brave new world.

Appreciating the Trinity

The Trinity is central to our Christian identity. Jesus said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). To be baptized into something is to be identified with–to be named in relation to (see 1 Corinthians 10:2). As disciples we’re named into the Triune God. John Calvin said, “In everything we deal with the triune God and never one of the three persons alone. Our relationship with God is therefore simultaneously a relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.”

Fifteen Reasons Our Churches Are Less Evangelistic Today

I conducted an unscientific Twitter poll recently to see what church leaders and church members thought of this trend, My specific question was: “Why do you think many churches aren’t as evangelistic as they once were?” The responses arrived quickly and in great numbers, both in public tweets and in direct messages to me. Indeed, I was still receiving responses four days after I sent my Twitter question.

Divine Purposes and Culpable Humans

by Bill Muehlenberg

I read a phrase the other day which got me thinking: it was a reference to Judas as a “culpable tool”. Let me quickly look at these two words. To be culpable of course is to be morally responsible, guilty, blameable. To be a “tool” can refer to one who is being used, often unwittingly, by someone smarter or more superior.

Or if we take the older and established meaning, a tool is “a device or implement … used to carry out a particular function”. In both senses of the word, we have the idea of someone or something being used by another. We think of the user and his purposes, while the tool is just being used for the ends of another.

So to speak of a ‘culpable tool’ may seem rather contradictory. But this is in a sense how Scripture speaks about humans in the outworking of the divine plan. An admittedly huge subject, it has to do with the old seeming paradox between two biblical truths: the sovereignty of God and the moral responsibility of man.

Bored By Heaven?

The source of eternal bliss is not a new iPhone or the next flat screen TV or another romance. Sinners justified by God’s free favor, through faith alone, know that Christ is all. When strength finally leaves us, when the last breath escapes, when consciousness of this world fades from view it is not an ill-defined bright light we shall see but a sharply defined light, that light by which the heavens are illuminated, that light which came into the world, God the Son incarnate, the radiant. The first sound we shall hear is the sound of joy and praise by those who are in communion with their Creator and their Redeemer.

Everyday Faith: Older Women, Your True Beauty Will Not Fade

by Pastor J.D.

This is the second of a four-part series on “everyday faith,” based on the instructions Paul gives in Titus 2:1–6. Gospel-centered folks are often allergic to “instructions,” so it’s important to keep in mind that Paul lays these out as our response to the gospel—not as a way to gain acceptance. “Because of what God has done for you,” Paul says, “your lives will look different.” Be sure to read part one here.

Yesterday we tackled Paul’s instructions to older men: don’t give up. Today we ask, What does Paul point out for older women? “Teach the older women to be reverent [or respectful] in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good” (Titus 2:3).

Years ago, one of my seminary professors, Dr. Keith Eitel, said something about this verse that my wife and I have never forgotten. He was talking about that word “reverent” (or “respectful”), and he said, “Older women can sometimes quit caring what people think, so they lose their filters on speaking their mind or talking badly about people.” He went on, “When you’re young, you have two things that can mask quite a bit: your natural physical beauty and your filters. But when those two fade—as they do with age—then the masks are gone, and if you have an ugly spirit, it’ll show.”

Barronelle Stutzman Knows Just What We Are Up Against

by Bill Muehlenberg

Hopefully by now most of you would have heard of the latest appalling case of the pink mafia and its war against Christians. A Christian Look at the Movies

By John Stonestreet

This week people around the globe will be glued to their TVs for the Academy Awards. But how should Christians think about Hollywood and the movies? Should we boycott them? Or should we take them more seriously as cultural barometers? During this week’s broadcast, John Stonestreet welcomes Christian screenwriter and producer Bryan Coley, to discuss how believers can use films to engage the culture for Christ.

It’s the 87th annual Academy Award show this weekend, and as the Chief Creative Officer at Art Within, Bryan Coley thinks it’s a prime opportunity for Christians to reflect on the role film plays in our culture. His organization, Art Within, exists to create methods and movie scripts that are culturally relevant and informed by the biblical worldview. And as a Christian himself, Coley doesn’t just love stories, but knows they’re one of God’s primary modes of revealing himself.

Irony and Intolerance On Campus: Case Study at UNC Wilmington

by Tom Gilson

So there was this student group at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, you see, that was hosting a campus discussion on abortion. Maybe they should have known better than to have tried. It’s a rancorous issue everywhere, with religion right at the heart of the dispute, and of course everyone knows that one side of this debate in particular is pretty hard to get along with. Its people are closed-minded. They believe what they believe, and they won’t listen to anyone else. They have a nasty association with “haters,” due to their knee-jerk rejection of people who disagree with them.

Cold Case Christianity: Yes, the Christian Worldview Is Supported by the Evidence

Richard Dawkins once famously said, “Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is the belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence.” He’s also quoted saying, “Many of us saw religion as harmless nonsense. Beliefs might lack all supporting evidence but, we thought, if people needed a crutch for consolation, where’s the harm? September 11th changed all that.” Dawkins isn’t the only atheist who believes Christianity can’t be supported by evidence. Sam Harris said, “When considering the truth of a proposition, one is either engaged in an honest appraisal of the evidence and logical arguments, or one isn’t. Religion is one area of our lives where people imagine that some other standard of intellectual integrity applies.” Statements such as these, while they are rhetorically powerful, expose a lack of understanding about the nature of evidence. Dawkins and Harris aren’t professional case makers, and they aren’t familiar with the broad categories of evidence we use in criminal and civil trials every day. Detectives and prosecutors understand anything can be assessed evidentially. There are only two categories of evidence, and Christian Case Makers use both types of evidence when making a case for Christianity:

Consecration: Rescuing the Lawful from Idolatry

by David de Bruyn

As we grow in communion with God, we are convicted in a different way. We become aware that we have compartmentalized our lives, and certain compartments have little of Christ in them. They may be completely lawful: family, food, work, leisure, hobbies, art, or other human pursuits, but we grow restless as we see how God is not the ultimate end of these parts of our lives.

Albert Mohler Blog: “The Table of the Nations, the Tower of Babel, and the Marriage Supper of the Lamb: Part 1”

In this new blog essay, Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr. reproduces the first half of this year’s convocation address on the Table of Nations and racial reconciliation. Mohler writes:

“Increasingly, the world is recognizing that to be human is to live by the light of a story — a story that tells us about the past, explains the future, and situates us in the present. Yet from a Christian worldview we recognize that the stories promulgated by the world are not only inadequate as metanarratives but toxic to human flourishing. Ministers of the gospel also have a story to tell — the story of Scripture, the story of Jesus and his love. This is the story that leads to salvation and a story we must not get wrong.”

Finding God’s Will Is No Deep Dark Secret Part 2

In Finding God’s Will Is No Deep Dark Secret Part 1 I asked the following questions: Is it possible for a Christian to know God’s will and not have to agonize over it? Should a Christian (a) make a decision without first spending hours in prayer, asking God to reveal His will? (b) avoid making […]

Self-Identity and God-Centered Relationships

The Reformed Reader

I’ve been rereading through some portions of the excellent book by Timothy Lane & Paul Tripp, Relationships: A Mess Worth Making (New Growth Press, 2010), and have been struck by how spot on is their analysis of how sinners distort God’s design for relationships with improper views of self and others.

First, there is the problem of self-centeredness in our relationships:

When love for God is replaced by love for self, we see people either as obstacles that hinder our goals or vehicles that promote them. Sinful self-interest turns the two great commands upside down: rather than loving God and using his gifts to serve others, we love the gifts and use people to get them.

Pg. 35.

Second, there is the problem of self-identity and our relationships:

No human being was ever meant to be the source of personal joy and contentment for someone else. And surely, no…

40 Days to the Cross: Reflections from Great Thinkers (Week One: Tuesday)

Tuesday

Day 6: What is the beauty of the resurrection?

Confession: Psalm 25:6–10

Remember your compassion, O Yahweh,

and your acts of loyal love,

because they are from of old.

Do not remember

the sins of my youth or my transgressions.

According to your loyal love remember me if you will,

for the sake of your goodness, O Yahweh.

Good and right is Yahweh;

therefore he instructs sinners in the way.

He causes the humble to walk in justice,

and teaches the humble his way.

All the paths of Yahweh are loyal love and faithfulness

for those who keep his covenant and statutes.

Reading: Mark 9:33–41

And they came to Capernaum. And after he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” But they were silent, because they had argued with one another on the way about who was greatest. And he sat down and called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he will be last of all and servant of all.” And he took a young child and had him stand among them. And taking him in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one of the young children such as these in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me, but the one who sent me.”

John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone expelling demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not prevent him, because there is no one who does a miracle in my name and will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. For whoever is not against us is for us. For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name because you are Christ’s, truly I say to you that he will never lose his reward.”

Reflection

What do we intend to do as a Church for Christ Jesus, “whom the king wishes to honor” (Esther 6:6)? Let me answer briefly.

Believe Him. Christ is always very pleased with His people’s faith. Beloved, confide in Him. Tell Him your troubles. Pour out your hearts before Him. Trust the merit of His blood, the power of His arm, the love of His heart. There is no box of precious ointment whose smell will more delight Him than your simple, unwavering faith.

He is a God of love: If you would give Him something choice, show Him your love. Let your heart go after Him, and with the arms of your love embrace Him.

—Charles H. Spurgeon

What Shall Be Done for Jesus?

Response

Jesus ushers in the kingdom of God. The ways of this kingdom often defy our ambitions and expectations. During this season of Lent, how are God’s ways overtaking your ways? Pray for the trust and love of a child. Pray that you would be a willing and humble disciple.[1]

Are you abiding in Christ?

Possessing the Treasure

by Mike Ratliff

4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. 9 Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved…
