The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Liberia free of the Ebola virus, as the country has had no new cases in 42 days. Last September, Liberia was seeing 400 cases a week, with hospitals full and bodies lying in the streets. A public health campaign was launched to stem the epidemic, and the last confirmed death was on 27 March.   

Kerry and Saudi FM: Yemen truce to begin Tuesday, if Houthi agree
Saudi Arabia said on Friday a five-day humanitarian ceasefire in Yemen would begin on Tuesday if the Iranian-allied Houthi militia it has been fighting agreed to the pause. “We have made a decision that the ceasefire will begin this Tuesday, May 12, and will last for five days and is subject to renewal if it works out,” Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told a joint press conference with US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Europe confronted on Friday the cold certainty of an unprecedented British referendum on EU membership after David Cameron’s election win, with two years of tough talks ahead to prevent a so-called “Brexit”.   

Teen charged with terrorism offences after Melbourne police raids
A 17-year-old boy has been charged with terrorism offences following a raid by state and federal police at a home in Greenvale, in Melbourne’s north, thwarting what police described as “an imminent threat to the community”. International experts have found traces of precursors for VX and sarin nerve gas at an undeclared location in Syria, sources say. Damascus has repeatedly denied the charges of using chemical weapons on the battlefield.   

Yemen conflict: Saudis warn border civilians to leave
Saudi-led coalition aircraft have dropped leaflets warning residents in a Yemeni border district to leave, as air strikes against Houthi rebels continue. Leaflets were dropped in Old Saada in Saada province, the rebels’ stronghold.   

Russia to stage massive WW2 parade despite Western boycott
Russia is due to stage its biggest ever military parade in the capital Moscow to mark 70 years of victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two. Thousands of troops will march on Red Square, and new high-tech armour will be on show for the first time. More than 20 heads of states are in Moscow, but many world leaders are boycotting the event because of Russia’s role in the Ukraine crisis.   

North Korea says test-fires submarine-launch ballistic missile: KCNA
North Korea said on Saturday it has successfully conducted an underwater test-fire of a submarine-launched ballistic missile, which, if true, would indicate progress in the secretive state’s pursuit of building missile-equipped submarines.   

ISIS activity prompts threat level increase at bases
Security conditions at U.S. military bases have been increased over growing concerns about terror threats, officials said Friday. A U.S. official confirmed to CNN that U.S. military bases are now at “Force Protection Bravo,” which is defined by the Pentagon as an “increased and predictable threat of terrorism.” It is the third-highest threat level on a five-tier scale used by the Department of Defense.   

Americans Not In The Labor Force Rise To Record 93,194,000
In what was an “unambiguously” unpleasant April jobs payrolls report, with a March revision dragging that month’s job gain to the lowest level since June of 2012, the fact that the number of Americans not in the labor force rose once again, this time to 93,194K from 93,175K, with the result being a participation rate of 69.45 or just above the lowest percentage since 1977, will merely catalyze even more upside to the so called “market” which continues to reflect nothing but central bank liquidity, and thus – the accelerating deterioration of the broader economy.   

China Preparing for Drone Warfare
China’s military plans to produce nearly 42,000 land-based and sea-based unmanned weapons and sensor platforms as part of its continuing, large-scale military buildup, the Pentagon’s annual report on the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) disclosed Friday. China currently operates several armed and unarmed drone aircraft and is developing long-range range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for both intelligence gathering and bombing attacks.

I detected a critical tone of dispensationalism in Tooley’s column. He inferred that dispensationalists have attracted criticism because of their apocalyptic “Left Behind” theology. To that end he announced an upcoming conference which would affirm that God wasn’t neutral regarding Israel. It would also discuss the proper political and theological perspectives. Tooley observed:

‘…countering the push to shift Evangelicals away from Israel will require more than old style “the Bible says” arguments that no longer resonate strongly with current Evangelical elites, especially young Evangelicals. Feds force policy that allows transgender kids to use bathrooms of their choice

Critics argued it would allow boys who identify as girls to use the bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice — and vice versa. Parents also had concerns about the possibility of transgender teachers.

School Board Chair Tamara Derenak Kaufax issued a statement calling the measure a way to “provide an environment which promotes equality where every student and employee is treated with dignity and respect.”

The Fairfax County Public Schools School Board voted Thursday night to add “gender identity” to its nondiscrimination policy in spite of massive opposition from parents and the area’s religious community.

Police were summoned to control a standing-room-only crowd as board members approved the controversial measure.

Critics argued it would allow boys who identify as girls to use the bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice — and vice versa. Parents also had concerns about the possibility of transgender teachers.

Tornado kills one and destroys two houses in north Texas farming area

A tornado claims the life of one person in a rural area of north Texas on Saturday and destroyed at least two houses, a local emergency official said, just days after a series of twisters tore through several Great Plains states. The twister touched down about five miles (eight kilometres) south of Cisco, a farm and ranch district, from where it travelled in a straight line and tore through several houses in its path, said Rex Fields, the Eastland County judge and local emergency management coordinator.

One person was killed, Fields said. He could not immediately provide more information on the victim. At least two houses were destroyed in the area about 130 miles (210km) east of Dallas, and others might have been damaged too, Fields said. Roads were partly flooded because of the storm. “We can’t exactly tell what … we’ve got just yet,” Fields said. “We don’t even have everybody accounted for.” In eastern Colorado, three tornadoes touched down in rural areas on Saturday, said Jim Kalina, a national weather service meteorologist. There were no reports of injuries or property damage from the weak twisters, he said. MORE

Fifth Dead Whale In 3 Weeks Washes Ashore Northern California Beach

Biologists determined a female juvenile humpback whale that washed ashore in Pacifica Tuesday was likely hit by a ship. Laura Sherr with the Marine Mammal Center says the beached whale, the fifth dead whale to wash ashore a Northern California beach in three weeks, had 4 broken bones with hemorrhaging and a broken rib. The 32-foot-long whale was first spotted by the U.S. Coast Guard late Monday at the southern end of the beach, according to the Marine Mammal Center.

The whale was found not far from where a dead 48-foot male sperm whale washed ashore on April 14, on Mori Point at the southern end of the beach. Marine Mammal Center officials said they believed it was a coincidence that two whale strandings occurred on the same beach within the same month. Several days later, a killer whale also beached itself north of Fort Bragg. Researchers flocked to the Mendocino coast to investigate the rare occurrence. However, they aren’t expected to come to any conclusions as to why the 25-foot creature came ashore to die. MORE

Mysterious illness wiping out turtles

Once an untouched wilderness of hills, valleys and waterfalls, the Bellinger River National Park is now a graveyard for river turtles infected by a mysterious and deadly illness. Hundreds of sick and dying Bellinger River snapping turtles (Myuchelys georgesi) – which only inhabit this region – have been washing up on the banks of the river, on the mid-north coast of NSW, alarming local scientists and authorities. First detected in February, the illness has been sweeping its way across the river system, devastating the native freshwater turtle population.

With the threat of extinction looming heavily on this rare species, local wildlife services are furiously working to identify the cause – likely a pathogen – and find a cure. “Right now, we must wait and see what the pathology tells us, but if we sit on our hands, we will drive another vertebrate to extinction and ignore a looming ecosystem breakdown of the Bellinger River,” says zoologist Dr Ricky Spencer from the University of Western Sydney. “There are other rivers on the north coast of NSW, where species of turtle only exist. Is the Bellinger River a preview of what is to come?” MORE

100,000 dead fish found in Nagoya canal in Japan

Nagoya government officials said Thursday that around 100,000 dead fish had been found in a canal between May 3 and May 6. The Nagoya Port Association said dead gizzard shad and gobies were found in an 8-kilometer-long stretch of canal between Nakagawa and Minato wards, Fuji TV reported.

A similar incident occurred two years ago, killing 230,000 fish. Experts suggested one reason the fish may have died is because sludge at the bottom of the canal depleted the amount of oxygen in the water. Residents complained Thursday about the smell of dead fish. The cleanup is expected to take another day. SOURCE

Obama to schools: Gender-bend or lose funding

The largest school district in Virginia is expanding its non-discrimination policy to include gender identity over the loud objections of parents, and the Obama administration intends to impose the change on every public school district in the country. On Thursday, the Fairfax County School Board voted overwhelmingly to expand it’s non-discrimination policy to accommodate transgender teachers and students. The vote came after the second of two boisterous hearings, at which parents overwhelmingly opposed the change. The amended policy would apply to students as young as preschool and allow teachers to stay in the classroom if they declare themselves to be a different gender and conduct themselves accordingly. Many parents are concerned about privacy for their kids if transgender adults and students are granted access to restrooms and locker rooms opposite of their biological gender.

For weeks, board members touted the change as minor change and one that would ensure all people are treated fairly. Shortly after the vote, that story changed. In a statement released after the meeting, school board chairwoman Tamara Derenak Koufax released a statement which said the federal government left the board no choice. “The U.S. Department of Education has told school districts that transgender students are protected from discrimination under Title IX and has recently required some school districts including Alexandria, Va., to amend their policies to expressly include gender identity,” said Koufax in the statement. Countdown to the stock-market Crash of 2016 is ticking louder

Warning bells just keep getting louder and louder as the countdown to the Crash of 2016 keeps ticking. Wall Street’s in denial, but the Washington Post warns: “U.S. economic growth slows to 0.2 percent, grinding nearly to a halt.” USA Today hears “Bubble Talk” at the Vegas “Davos for Geeks.” Earlier the Wall Street Journal warned, “declining population could reduce global economic growth by 40%.” Then recently the “slow-growth Fed” was blamed. Wrong, former Fed chief Ben Bernanke counterattacked: “I’m waiting for the Journal to argue for a well-structured program of public infrastructure development, which would support growth in the near term by creating jobs and in the longer term by making our economy more productive.”

But for years the Fed “has been pretty much the only game in town as far as economic policy goes.” Today “we should be looking for a better balance between monetary and other growth-promoting policies, including fiscal policy.” Fiscal policy? No, Ben, not a chance. The GOP controls economic policy. And they will never give “growth-promoting fiscal policy” victories to President Obama and Hillary Clinton before the presidential election of 2016. Never. In spite of Bernanke’s obviously rational solution to the core problems of the American economy, one that would help the American people, the GOP will never, ever agree to fiscal stimulus programs that give the Democrats bragging rights and make Obama and Clinton look good before the elections. Pastor Rick Warren And Elton John Hold Hands In Congress, Joke About Kissing Each Other

Laodicean church pastor Rick Warren appeared in Congress with pop icon and outspoken homosexual Elton John on Wednesday to ask for more money for AIDS research. They were clearly having such a good time that they started holding hands as you see in the photo below.

After taking their seats at the witness table, the giddy pair laughed and smiled as they held hands, with Warren saying “Amen” and cautioning Elton John that if they kissed it would be “the kiss heard ‘round the world.” Is Rick Warren trying to tell us something here, is there a “coming out” moment in his future? Hard to say at this point, but sure looks like it.

Such is the state of the professing Christian Church in 2015, weak, powerless, and effeminate. Elton John, the man who has worn more wigs and dresses than Marilyn Monroe, we expect this from. But Rick Warren claims to be a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Here was his perfect opportunity to lovingly and graciously tell not only Elton John, but all of Congress that without being born again they will die and go to a Devil’s Hell. But instead, he holds hands with a gay man, and jokes about kissing him. It was a joke, right? MORE

Obama Orders Illegal Aliens To Be Admitted Into Military

Congress is debating whether illegal immigrants should lawfully be allowed into the military. Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., inserted a provision in the 2016 defense budget to encourage the enlistment of qualified illegal immigrants. Debate on the bill is scheduled for next week, and some House members would like to see the provision stripped–including Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, and Rep.

Mo Brooks, R-Ala. King is expected to introduce an amendment to do so. The admission of illegal immigrants who qualify for DACA could help pave the way for them being recruited under the Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest program (MAVNI), established to allow legal immigrants into the armed forces. The Army established the program to admit those with medical training or critical language skills deemed vital to national security. FULL REPORT

A ranking Iranian political figure, Issa Kalantari, recently warned that past mistakes leave Iran with water supplies so insufficient that up to 70 percent, or 55 million out of 78 million Iranians, would be forced to abandon their native country for parts unknown. Many facts buttress Kalantari’s apocalyptic prediction: Once lauded in poetry, Lake Urmia, the Middle East’s largest lake, has lost 95 percent of its water since 1996, going from 31 billion cubic meters to 1.5 billion.

Over two-thirds of Iran’s cities and towns are “on the verge of a water crisis” that could result in drinking water shortages; already, thousands of villages depend on water tankers. New Quick Killing Virus spread by Ticks

In the spring of 2014, a Bourbon County, Kansas farmer sought hospital treatment. Eleven days later, he died. His symptoms included fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and a rash. Blood work showed thrombocytopenia (reduced platelet count, which inhibits clotting making the patient more susceptible to bleeding) and leukopenia (reduced white blood cell count, inhibiting immune response to the pathogen). The patient said he had been bitten by ticks. 

The CDC determined the man suffered from a never before encountered RNA virus of the genus Thogotovirus, viruses that are found around the world. There is no cure for Bourbon virus. There has not yet been another identified case of this virus. Scientists do not know if this virus affects other animals. Naturally, there is concern about whether there is a new virus spreading from tick to tick and across the animal kingdom that we have little to no treatment for, but we can remain vigilant and take care of ourselves and our pets to lessen the likelihood of exposure. Costa Rica’s Volcano Turrialba spews black ash cloud 6,000 ft into airPosted: 09 May 2015 05:59 AM PDT

Costa Rica’s Turrialba volcano belched a column of gas and ash upwards of 6,000ft into the air on Monday (May 4th). An explosion on Monday afternoon lasting 28 minutes emanated from the volcano in central Costa Rica and ash reached parts of the capital San Jose some 30 miles away. Costa Rica’s international airport was reopened on Tuesday morning after the eruption of the nearby volcano blanketed runways with ash, forcing its closure overnight. Ash can affect the safety of flights during take-off and landing as well as damage engines.

The Turrialba volcano spewed thick black clouds of ash into the sky, a volcanologist for the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Obsivori), Eliecer Duarte, said. “Yesterday’s event at 3.20pm lasted 28 minutes. In 20 minutes the ash spread 6.2 miles and reached the other camera which is in Irazu, towards the south east. It rose vertically more than 6,561ft and spewed different sized material. Some stayed on the summit and other finer material flew distances reaching the central valley.” Last month, the volcano’s most powerful eruption in two decades was recorded forcing the evacuation of residents from the surrounding area. Hundreds evacuated as Indonesia’s Karangetang volcano violently erupts in N. SulawesiPosted: 09 May 2015 05:48 AM PDT

At least 465 people were evacuated from their houses in Siau Tagulandang Biaro district in North Sulawesi province on Friday following eruption of Karangetang volcano, a senior official at Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said here. Impact of the active volcano’s eruption has flattened several houses in Kora village in the region, BNPB Spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said, adding that in the afternoon the volcano was still erupting lava, rocks and hot materials as far as several kilometers from the crater of the volcano.

“No death toll was recorded from the eruption. 465 people were sheltered in three sites located around 5 kilometers from the crater,” Sutopo told Xinhua by phone. Sutopo said that hot clouds were seen engulfing the eastern and southern side of the volcano slopes. He added that the displaced people did not bring any of their belongings as they have been getting used to Karangetang’s volcanic activities in the last few years. “Today’s eruption was different from the previous ones as the hot cloud emitted from the eruption was the largest one by far, which made people have to evacuate,” Sutopo added. Federal Judge Rules North Carolina Commissioners Can’t Present Prayers Only in Jesus’ NamePosted: 08 May 2015 07:06 PM PDT

A federal judge in North Carolina has ruled that commissioners in one local county can’t present prayers only in Jesus’ name even if they all are Christians because doing so isn’t “nondiscriminatory” toward other religions and elevates Christianity in government. As previously reported, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and ACLU of North Carolina Legal Foundation (ACLU-NCLF) had filed suit against the Rowan County commissioners in March 2013, complaining that their invocations have asserted that “there is only one way to salvation, and that is Jesus Christ,” and thank the Lord for the “virgin birth,” the “cross at Calvary” and “the resurrection.”

“I want my local government to be open and welcoming to people of all beliefs,” Nan Lund, a local resident who is among three plaintiffs named in the suit, stated in a news release announcing the legal challenge. “But when officials begin a public meeting with prayers that are specific to only one religious viewpoint, I feel unwelcome and excluded.” In July 2013, federal Judge James A. Beaty Jr., nominated to the bench by then-President Bill Clinton, sided with the ACLU and the three complainants, ordering the commissioners to end their Christian prayer practice while the case moves forward in court. Cheerleaders at a Texas school whose inspirational messages, including Bible verses, on football game banners were briefly censored by school officials went to court and won, so why are they still fighting the case at the state Supreme Court? Because of the difference between permission to state a message, and the right to state a message, explain officials with the legal team working on behalf of the students in the Kountze Independent School District.

“The religious messages the cheerleaders choose to display on their banners is plainly the private speech of the cheerleaders and deserves protection,” said Hiram Sasser, director of Litigation for Liberty Institute, which recently submitted additional arguments to the Texas Supreme Court. “The state Supreme Court needs to enforce the rule of law and reverse the Beaumont Court of Appeals ruling,” he said. The case dates back a number of years already, but in May 2013, Hardin County District Court Judge Steve Thomas ruled for the cheerleaders, saying the banners were “constitutionally permissible.” MORE

Days after a terrorist attack in Texas for which ISIS has claimed responsibility, the U.S. military has raised its alert level for bases in North America to its highest since the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The move to level “Bravo” was not based on specific threats from ISIS but was “informed by recent events,” a spokesman for U.S. Northern Command told Fox News. “Bravo,” the third of five levels of alert, requires increased security at military posts in the country.

FBI Director James Comey warned Thursday of domestic threat from ISIS sympathizers, saying hundreds and possibly thousands of people in America are following ISIS on social media and consuming their “poison.” A Defense Department statement said the move is “a prudent measure to remind installation commanders at all levels within the USNORTHCOM area of responsibility to ensure increased vigilance and safeguarding of all DOD personnel, installations and facilities.” “This change, in addition to random drills or exercises, is a mean to ensure that we effectively execute our force protection mission,” the Defense Department said. North Korea test-fires new underwater ballistic missilePosted: 08 May 2015 06:42 PM PDT

North Korea says it has test-fired a new underwater ballistic missile, describing it as a “world level strategic weapon.” North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was at the site of the event and gave the order of the missile launch from an attack submarine, the country’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported early on Saturday. According to the KCNA, the weapon was developed based on a plan proposed by Kim.

Describing the test as an “eye-opening success,” Kim stressed that the North Korean army is capable of “striking and wiping out in any waters the hostile forces.” It is not still clear that the missile was the controversial KN-11, the North Korean submarine-launched ballistic missile reportedly under development. Some reports say North Korea earlier conducted three tests with the missile on an underwater test platform near the country’s coastal city of Sinpo in October 2014, on January 23, and April 22, 2015. China building up for drone warfare, Fleet of 40,000 PlusPosted: 08 May 2015 06:37 PM PDT

China’s military plans to produce nearly 42,000 land-based and sea-based unmanned weapons and sensor platforms as part of its continuing, large-scale military buildup, the Pentagon’s annual report on the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) disclosed Friday. China currently operates several armed and unarmed drone aircraft and is developing long-range range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for both intelligence gathering and bombing attacks. “The acquisition and development of longer-range UAVs will increase China’s ability to conduct long-range reconnaissance and strike operations,” the report said.

China’s ability to use drones is increasing and the report said China “plans to produce upwards of 41,800 land- and sea-based unmanned systems, worth about $10.5 billion, between 2014 and 2023.” Four UAVs under development include the Xianglong, Yilong, Sky Saber, and Lijian, with the latter three drones configured to fire precision-strike weapons. “The Lijian, which first flew on Nov. 21, 2013, is China’s first stealthy flying wing UAV,” the report said. The drone buildup is part of what the Pentagon identified as a decades-long military buildup that last year produced new multi-warhead missiles and a large number of submarines and ships. We knew that this Islamic organization was the mother of Jihad. Hamas, Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, and now the Islamic State, are all offshoots of the Muslim Brotherhood.

THE TRUTH ABOUT ISLAM

Islam is a Satanic pseudo religion — it is Satan’s government, also known as Sharia, and its goal is world domination. In reality, Islam is a totalitarian political system, cloaked in robes of religion, to present itself to the world as good and honorable. We who love the Lord Jesus Christ, and have discernment, know inherently that Islam is evil.

I often wonder if they believe that the Islamists will be kind to them because they are broadcasting kind words about them. How completely ignorant can they be? They will one day hear the words “Submit or die.”

But our Muslim president and the deluded left wing media do not scare me as much as the Church! The push for Chrislam in the Baptist church and in the Emergent church is startling. Catholicism has always been open to ecumenicalism. Now, the Chrislam gang, headed by false teachers like Rick Warren, are declaring that the Vatican is the mother of all Christian denominations!

OUR GOD AND ALLAH ARE NOT THE SAME

This is a lie being fed to millions of unsuspecting people in churches all over the world. It sounds good, right? They say “There is only one God, so the God of the Bible and Allah must be the same. This is a blatant lie, right from the father of lies himself – Satan.

JESUS CHRIST IS THE SON OF GOD

The Qu’ran clearly states that Allah has NO son.

“They say, ‘God has begotten a son.’ God forbid! Self-sufficient is He. His is all that the heavens and the earth contain. Surely for this you have no sanction. Whould you say of God what you know not?” — Qur’an 10:68

“Such was Jesus, the son of Mary. That is the whole truth, which they still doubt. God forbid that He Himself should beget a son! When He decrees a thing He need only say: ‘Be,’ and it is.” —Qur’an 19:35

“Those who say: ‘The Lord of Mercy has begotten a son,’ preach a monstrous falsehood, at which the very heavens might crack, the earth break asunder, and the mountains crumble to dust. That they should ascribe a son to the Merciful, when it does not become the Lord of Mercy to beget one!” — Qur’an 19:88

“Never has God begotten a son, nor is there any other god besides Him. Were this otherwise, each god would govern his own creation, each holding himself above the other. Exalted be God above their falsehoods!” — Qur’an 23:91

Clearly, the Qu’ran denies that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

JESUS CHRIST WAS CRUCIFIED

The Qu’ran states that Jesus (they call their version of Jesus – Isa) was never crucified.

(Âl ‘Imran 3:74-77, 113) Although Christians believe ‘Isa died on a cross, and Jews claim they killed him, in reality he was not killed or crucified, and those who said he was crucified lied (An-Nisa’ 4:157). ‘Isa did not die, but ascended to Allah. (An-Nisa’ 4:158) On the day of Resurrection ‘Isa himself will be a witness against Jews and Christians for believing in his death. (An-Nisa’ 4:159)

HOW CAN OUR GOD BE ALLAH?

The foundation of our faith is the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He paid our sin debt, that we were not able to pay. He reconciled all those who repented and trusted Him to the Father. Jesus, who had no sin, gave us His Righteousness! He is not only the Son of God, but He is the second Person of the Godhead — therefore, He is God. Only God could be the final sacrifice for all sin!

WHO WILL YOU BELIEVE?

Will you believe a man in a pulpit, telling you that God and Allah are one and the same? Or will you believe the Word of God? The Holy Bible is God’s Word, penned by men under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

The Qu’ran was written in the 7th century and twisted many Bible stories. Now, who do we know who twists the Word of God? It should be crystal clear to the believer that the Qu’ran is counterfeit and is written by Satan himself!

Please come away from these apostate churches. Return to a church that teaches the Bible. Come home. God is waiting for you with open arms.

Time is short. Do not delay. Repent of the lies that you have believed from false teachers!

Apostate Pastor Rick Warren And Elton John Hold Hands In Congress, Joke About Kissing Each Other

Warren said that theirs would be “the kiss heard round the world”

Laodicean church pastor Rick Warren appeared in Congress with pop icon and outspoken homosexual Elton John on Wednesday to ask for more money for AIDS research. They were clearly having such a good time that they started holding hands as you see in the photo below.

After taking their seats at the witness table, the pair laughed and smiled as they held hands, with Warren saying “Amen” and cautioning John that if they kissed it would be “the kiss heard ‘round the world.” Is Rick Warren trying to tell us something here, is there a “coming out” moment in his future? Hard to say at this point, but sure looks like it.

Such is the state of the professing Christian Church in 2015, weak, powerless, and effeminate. Elton John, the man who has worn more wigs and dresses than Marilyn Monroe, we expect this from. But Rick Warren claims to be a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Here was his perfect opportunity to lovingly and graciously tell not only Elton John, but all of Congress that without being born again they will die and go to a Devil’s Hell. But instead, he holds hands with a gay man, and jokes about kissing him. It was a joke, right?

Megachurch Pastor Paula White Weds Rocker Jonathan Cain in Third Marriage

Paula WhitePaula White just got married to Chicago-born rocker Jonathan Cain. He is perhaps best known for his days with the band Journey and Bad English. He wrote the classic Journey song “Don’t Stop Believin'” and was part of over a dozen other Journey albums.

“What a weekend—Blessed beyond description,” she tweeted.

White, a controversial pastor was divorced from her last husband, Randy White, in 2007. White married her first husband, Dean Knight, when she was a teenager. Together, they had a son named Bradley. She divorced Knight after she got saved.

White stirred controversy in 2011 after she was appointed senior pastor of the late Zachery Tims’ megachurch, New Destiny Christian Center (NDCC) near Orlando. At the time, White was also senior pastor of Without Walls International Church. She later handed the reigns back to her ex-husband, Randy.

The dying thief: What was so great about his faith?

There are many acts of extraordinary faith in the Bible. The one that has impressed me the most concerns the dying thief on the cross. We could take the approach that he had nothing to lose, so he decided to cast his lot with Jesus. But this makes absolutely no sense of the text and the context.
In this conversion we have a specific fulfillment of Christ’s first words on the cross. No sooner had Christ spoken the words, “Father, forgive them,” had the Father answered that prayer by turning a once-reviling criminal into a Christ-glorifying saint. While the soon-to-be converted criminal was not directly responsible for Christ’s death, he nevertheless joined with those who were and was thus indirectly addressed when Christ asked for God to forgive “them.”
Christ, the sinless one, was numbered with or counted among the transgressors (Isa. 53:12; Luke 22:37), all of whom have a bigger problem than the day-to-day sins they commit. They hate Christ, the God-man. Anyone who has a master other than the Lord Jesus hates him (Lk. 16:13; Gal. 4:8). That these two criminals loathed him is clearly manifested during the crucifixion: “And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way” (Matt. 27:44).
When the criminal who was converted was doing his worst against Christ, Christ was doing his best for this criminal.
The conversion of the one criminal was most extraordinary and testifies to the power of Christ’s prayer and the grace of God. Why?
This criminal’s faith did not come at a time such as when Christ turned water into wine; or performed miracles, such as walking on water, opening the eyes of a blind man, or raising Lazarus from the dead. No! The criminal believed on the Messiah while he was hanging as one cursed upon a tree. The criminal trusted in and boldly defended the one whose disciples had abandoned him. Jesus was at his lowest when this criminal asked to be remembered in Christ’s kingdom.
When he was on the cross, did anyone publicly cry out, as John the Baptist did, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (Jn. 1:29)? But this is essentially what the dying thief did. Little wonder, then, that Christ should promise him a place in his kingdom: “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Lk. 23:43).
The criminal acknowledged he was guilty; he acknowledged that Christ was not (“this man has done nothing wrong”); he feared God; but, and here is the key: the criminal did not merely want to be in a better place. He wanted to be with Christ in a better place: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom” (Lk. 23:42). The criminal believed “against all hope”.
Heaven is a better place because that is where Christ is. Everyone wants to go to heaven, but not everyone wants to go to Christ’s heaven. Not so with this criminal: he saw, with his eyes, Christ at his worst; but with the eyes of faith, he believed that Christ would soon be at his best, and so put his faith in a dying king.
Christ is always – always! – willing to save even the most miserable of sinners. A recognition of guilt (Lk. 23:40) and a confidence in him and not ourselves (Lk. 23:42) will always lead to the most assuring truth a sinner can receive: the Savior welcomes such into his paradise!

9 Things Adult Daughters Want Their Mothers to Know

“And Mom, for my 18th birthday . . .”

The rest of my daughter’s sentence sounded like an adult in a Charlie Brown special. Anna spoke clearly enough, but I focused on the impending reality of those last four words.

“Mom? Mom!”

I looked up at my daughter. “I’m sorry. . . . What? What were you saying?”

She shook her head and her eyes narrowed. “You weren’t listening, were you?”

Anna, like many young women, is a self-proclaimed Daddy’s girl. Throughout her life, he’d been the go-to parent for her. “I’m just like Dad,” she would explain. “Besides, Nathan is your favorite anyway.”

Ouch. I didn’t want to be accused of playing favorites. With my husband’s recent death, I held both my children closer than ever. How could I improve my relationship with my adult daughter and point her to Christ?

Recently, I asked Anna, now 22 and a senior at Covenant College, to give me nine things a mother needs to know about her adult daughter. So she and her friends crowded around a lunch table. Much of what they said, to me, looks a lot like the practical application of Ephesians 6.

Faith Plus Works vs. Faith Alone and Works as Evidence of Faith: Is it Just Semantics?

Visitor: Faith + Works [heresy?] = Faith + Sanctification [works is essential !] = Justification, Sanctification, Glorification = Salvation?

To me, it just points to why so much division is in Christianity. No sooner than a work is done, someone will claim heresy. Another will claim it as their testimony of faith.

Response: Salvation by Christ alone vs. salvation by Christ plus works are two entirely different visions of Christianity, not just a simple division over whether we should have red or green carpet in our local church building. To think that “Christ alone” does not matter or is not important enough to fight for is more worrisome to me. Indifference or thinking that church unity is somehow more important than preaching Christ alone … i.e.. that we can (at least partly) maintain our own just standing before God — is not a matter simple division among otherwise well-meaning brothers… this is critical as to whether we are honoring God or dishonoring Him (Gal 3:3; Phil 3:3). This is where the rubber meets the road.

Visitor: You’re kidding, right? The “Christ alone” view keeps insisting that it includes works that is evidence ..

but the works gets interpreted as heresy vs. evidence of faith in “Christ alone”.

Response: are you, then, affirming, that Jesus Christ is not sufficient to save you? That you yourself must MAINTAIN your just standing before God? That Jesus isn’t enough? I am talking about your justification here – your right standing before God. To believe that your flesh contributes one bit of righteousness to your standing before God is the heresy Paul refers to in Galatians 3:3.

Adrian Rogers on the difference between false religion and true religion

The difference between counterfeit faith and true faith is the FOCUS. Satan’s focus was on himself. It’s pride and selfishness. All false religions come from satan and he capitalizes on our sinful nature to focus on ourselves. He tempted Eve with “You will be like God”. (Genesis 3:5). He told Eve that if she ate the fruit (disobeyed) God she would get something good out of it for herself. Selfishness and pride.This is what satan said in his heart:

‘I will ascend to heaven;
above the stars of God
I will set my throne on high;
I will sit on the mount of assembly
in the far reaches of the north;
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High.’
(Isaiah 14:13-14)

I will, I will, I will, I will, I will; five times satan is recorded as mulling over what he will do and what he will get. He has been on a tear ever since, telling us through false religion what we can do and what we can get (if we disobey God).

I will, I will, I will, I will, I will…

Yet Jesus prayed:

Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done. (Luke 22:42b)

God’s will. The focus is on Him, His Son, and His Spirit. What we can do for Him, to Him, about Him, through Him, and by Him- so He can get the glory.

Do not be fooled by satan’s tricks. As the late Adrian Rogers said in his sermon “Counterfeit Christianity-”

One of Satan’s chief tools in his bag of tricks is religion. The very first temptation in the Garden of Eden was a religious temptation; it was a temptation not to be ungodly, but to be godly “and ye shall be as gods”. (Genesis 3:1-5)

It’s a very good sermon, please take a listen. The part when he describes people who have falsely depended on a spiritual experience for their faith and not the Person of Faith (Jesus), and they try to convince God to let them enter heaven, is devastating. “But, but I had a vision, I was engulfed in light, I saw heaven…” Satan standing aside saying, “You fool, that was me.”

Our focus should always be on precious Jesus, as it says in Hebrews 12:2

looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.


3 Simple Ways to Debunk Relativism, Skepticism, and Materialism

Gorgias the Nihilist, an ancient Greek philosopher, was said to have argued the following four points:

1. Nothing exists;

2. Even if something exists, nothing can be known about it; and

3. Even if something can be known about it, knowledge about it can’t be communicated to others.

4. Even if it can be communicated, it cannot be understood.

Of course, if you can understand his argument, he’s wrong. So too, many modern thinkers hold to positions that, fall apart into self-refutation when critically examined.

Today, I want to look at three such popular claims. In showing their inherent contradictions, I hope to show why we can (and must) affirm that knowable, non-empirically testable, absolute truths exist.

Step 1: Answering Relativism

The claim: “Absolute truth does not exist.”

Why it’s self-refuting: The claim “absolute truth does not exist” is either absolutely true or it’s not. But, of course, it can’t be absolutely true, since that would create a contradiction: we would have proven the existence of an absolute truth, the claim itself. Since it cannot be absolutely true, we must concede that there are some cases in which the proposition “absolute truth does not exist” must be false… in which case, we’re back to affirming the existence of absolute truth.

What we can know: Absolute truth exists. Put another way, the claim “absolute truth exists” is absolutely true…

Why Christian Discipleship Is Critical to Christian Survival

Just before leaving the disciples, Jesus gathered them together and commissioned them with an important task. He told them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you…” (Matthew 28:18-20). Jesus understood the importance of discipleship (the process of making disciples). In fact, it was so important, He made sure it was His last directive to those who followed Him. What precisely is discipleship and why is it so important? Is it simply a matter of making converts? No, it’s much more. The process of making disciples is often misunderstood and neglected in the Church today, and as a result, we are in danger of losing our identity as Christians. Christian discipleship is critical to Christian survival.

Even secular dictionaries recognize discipleship as something more than simply creating “members” or “converts”. Dictionary.com describes a disciple as “a person who is a pupil or an adherent of the doctrines of another.” Webster’s online dictionary defines a disciple as “one who accepts and assists in spreading the doctrines of another.” At least one aspect of discipleship involves learning the doctrines of a particular system or teacher. This intellectual aspect of being a disciple is affirmed in the Bible. The Greek word used for “disciple” in the New Testament is “mathētḗs” and its root, “math-“, means the “mental effort needed to think something through“. Disciples are “learners”, “scholars” and followers of Christ who “learn the doctrines of Scripture and the lifestyle they require”. There is an important connection between doctrine and behavior. It’s not enough to simply follow Jesus’ moral teaching related to behavior, true disciples must understand the doctrines of Christianity. What does our worldview teach, theologically or philosophically? How are we to make a defense (1 Peter 3:15), hold fast the faithful word which is in accordance with this teaching (Titus 1:9), recognize a heresy when we see one (Titus 3:10), and guard the treasure which has been entrusted to us (2 Timothy 1:14)? Becoming a disciple means becoming a learner.

Sadly, many in the Church have neglected this important aspect of discipleship, and their hesitancy to celebrate the life of the mind continues to put the Church in great peril…

MILLENNIAL FAITH THAT STICKS: MORE THAN “NICENESS”

“True gospel-centered morality isn’t so easily whittled away. Faith as niceness is another story. ”

Over the years we’ve found the Barna Group’s research on faith and Millennials to be helpful, as well as consistent with our experience. Their 2006 study gets at the heart of why Impact 360 Institute’s Gap Year was started in the first place, namely the problem of Millennials disengaging from their faith during and after the college years. The study shows that the “most potent data regarding disengagement is that a majority of twentysomethings – 61% of today’s young adults – had been churched at one point during their teen years but they are now spiritually disengaged (i.e., not actively attending church, reading the Bible, or praying).”

“Only one-fifth of twentysomethings (20%) have maintained a level of spiritual activity consistent with their high school experiences.”

This statistic is consistent with my own experience in college and beyond (including first-hand reports from parents of college students). I can remember one young lady in my class in college—I’ll call her “Katie”—whose story is one of losing faith through a slow and steady loss of gospel-centered morality. She lost her biblical saltiness (Matt. 5:13-15) with each year she was in college. She came in on fire for all things Christ-oriented her freshman year and left stone cold. She married an unbeliever after college and is already divorced—all of this within the span of 3 or 4 years after we graduated. Did she “know” a lot about biology when she left college? Sure. How well did she fare regarding her soul? The early church father St. Augustine believed that what we know is to a large degree determined by what we love. Katie’s love for God was easily outmatched by the scintillating things college had to offer her at the time. Looking back, her faith was more or less “niceness.”

How the Prosperity Gospel Hurts Racial Reconciliation, Russell Moore. “When a prophet calls down fire from heaven, it’s wise to stand to the side. That’s how I felt a few weeks ago when John Perkins, the revered preacher and civil rights activist, brought up prosperity gospel pastor Creflo Dollar during a live interview. Perkins lamented that there are so few accredited African-American evangelical schools in the United States while at the same time Dollar is asking for money for a $65 million dollar private jet. ‘That’s almost witchcraft,’ he said. The more I’ve thought of that over the past few weeks, the more I’m convinced that Perkins is right. The prosperity gospel is a barrier to racial reconciliation.”

Three Ways to Shut Down Gossip, Erik Raymond. As Raymond aptly puts it, gossip is like a devilish Ponzi scheme, a way for powers of darkness to get rich on “verbal assassination.” Everyone—the gossip speaker, the gossip subject, the gossip hearer—loses when gossip is allowed to flourish. But how can we begin to root it out?

Would the Apostle Paul Listen to Lecrae? Brandon Smith. This article is worth your time if only for this one wonderful little gem: “I’d prefer a Trinity-centered Gregorian chant over an ambiguous Christian pop song any day.” (Those Gregorian chants don’t get very much air time these days, sadly.) But Smith isn’t here arguing for a return to ancient worship styles. Quite the contrary: he thinks that if Paul were around today, he’d be completely fine with some—by no means all—contemporary Christian music.

DC Talk & the Influence of “Faith-fortifying” Songs, Trevin Wax. Speaking of contemporary Christian music (CCM, for those in the biz), Wax offers another helpful reflection, this one focused on one of the most popular Christian bands of all time: DC Talk. I (Chris) still remember listening to “In the Light” after becoming a believer, and thinking that what was previously cheesy was (now) really encouraging. Wax would agree: there may be a lot of garbage in the CCM world, but DC Talk was a bright spot.

Three Myths About Women’s Emotions, Sharon Hodde Miller. In the most anti-climactic announcement of 2015, Hillary Clinton announced that she’s running for our nation’s top office in 2016. Her official declaration led many to swiftly and publicly announce why they wouldn’t be voting for her. Some of those reasons, of course, are good and right. But our friend Sharon takes on one of the more suspect “reasons” – Clinton would be a bad leader because she’s a woman, and women are emotional. There’s a whole bundle of error in that statement, and Sharon helpfully sorts some of it out.

The total depravity of our children is a faith-doctrine, a biblical insight. Our natural instinct is to think of new-born children as moral and spiritual tabulae rasae, clean sheets on which to write a successful life. Admittedly the page may soon be a little blotted (the occasional temper tantrum!), but the background is still basically white, surely? Not so, according to the Scriptures: the wicked go astray from the womb and speak lies from birth, insists the psalmist.

Here is a chart comparing Arminianism and Calvinism. I’ll excerpt the part about our sin-nature.

Arminianism Free Will or Human Ability says:

Although human nature was seriously affected by the fall, man has not been left in a state of total spiritual helplessness. God graciously enables every sinner to repent and believe, but He does not interfere with man’s freedom. Each sinner possesses a free will, and his eternal destiny depends on how he uses it. Man’s freedom consists of his ability to choose good over evil in spiritual matters; his will is not enslaved to his sinful nature. The sinner has the power to either cooperate with God’s Spirit and be regenerated or resist God’s grace and perish. The lost sinner needs the Spirit’s assistance, but he does not have to be regenerated by the Spirit before he can believe, for faith is man’s act and precedes the new birth. Faith is the sinner’s gift to God; it is man’s contribution to salvation.

Calvinism: Total Inability or Total Depravity says:

Because of the fall, man is unable of himself to savingly believe the gospel. The sinner is dead, blind, and deaf to the things of God; his heart is deceitful and desperately corrupt. His will is not free, it is in bondage to his evil nature, therefore, he will not — indeed he cannot — choose good over evil in the spiritual realm. Consequently, it takes much more than the Spirit’s assistance to bring a sinner to Christ — it takes regeneration by which the Spirit makes the sinner alive and gives him a new nature. Faith is not something man contributes to salvation but is itself a part of God’s gift of salvation— it is God’s gift to the sinner, not the sinner’s gift to God.

Total depravity does not mean that all humans are all as bad as they could be. Not everyone is a Hitler, is he? There are people who are nice and compassionate and do kind things. Then there’s the Hitlers and Stalins and Pol Pots of the world. No, total depravity means that sin has touched every part of our being, totally, and we are totally unable to do anything good for God. We are all criminals in God’s eyes and in His capacity as Judge He would be righteous if He sent all humans to hell upon their death. Even children.

So what happens to children who die, if they are completely depraved but are unable to consciously and maturely respond to the Gospel?

One of the complaints I receive about the Doctrines of Grace is that God would be horribly mean to send babies to hell when they do not have the mind to even be able to contemplate the Gospel and formulate a response to it, the basis of faith and the key to entry into the Kingdom. I agree, that would be hard to swallow. But God does not send babies or children to hell. He is just, and He is sovereign, and He has a plan.

After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, John MacArthur was invited to the Larry King talk/interview show to try and help people make sense of the spiritual questions the event raised. In a subsequent sermon titled What Happens to Babies Who Die?, Dr MacArthur said this:

Some of you who tuned in to the Larry King Show a week ago Saturday will remember that Larry fired a question to me on the air that came out of nowhere. The question that reveals a nagging, troubling issue in the human heart. He asked me, “What about a two-year-old baby crushed at the bottom of the World Trade Center?”
I answered, “Instant heaven.”
He replied with another question. “Wasn’t a sinner?”
I again answered, “Instant heaven.”
That’s a compelling question, what about a baby crushed at the bottom of the Trade Center? What about any baby that dies? It’s an agonizing question. It’s a question that plagues Christians and non-Christians alike…what happens to babies that die?

In the essay, MacArthur shows from scripture that they go to heaven. Though they are sinners from the womb and though they have not hard or responded to the Gospel, God made a provision.

The Doctrines of Grace make me love Jesus all the more. He made a provision for the children and adults otherwise unable to cognitively understand their sin or the Gospel. God is love and His provision is demonstrates no better than the very moment an apple cheeked youngster’s laugh is stilled by death, when He receives them instantly to His arms.

Can You Answer The Most Important Question Of Your Life?

I am asking you the most important question of your life. Your joy or your sorrow for all eternity depends upon your answer.

“And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!” John 1:36 (KJV)

The question is: Are you saved? It is not a question of how good you are, nor if you are a church member, but are you saved? Are you sure you will go to Heaven when you die?

God says in order to go to Heaven, you must be born again. In John 3:7, Jesus said to Nicodemus, “Ye must be born again.” In the Bible God gives us the plan of how to be born again which means to be saved. His plan is simple! You can be saved today. How?

First, my friend, you must realize you are a sinner. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Because you are a sinner, you are condemned to death. “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). This includes eternal separation from God in Hell.

“ . . . it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

But God loved you so much He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus, to bear your sin and die in your place. “ . . . He hath made Him [Jesus, Who knew no sin] to be sin for us. . . that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Jesus had to shed His blood and die. “For the life of the flesh is in the blood” (Lev. 17:11). “ . . . without shedding of blood is no remission [pardon]” (Hebrews 9:22).

“ . . . God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

Although we cannot understand how, God said my sins and your sins were laid upon Jesus and He died in our place. He became our substitute. It is true. God cannot lie.

My friend, “God commandeth all men everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). This repentance is a change of mind that agrees with God that one is a sinner, and also agrees with what Jesus did for us on the Cross.

Do you know Him? Don’t try to mislead me. Do you know my King?

In Acts 16:30-31, the Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas: “ . . . ‘Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ And they said, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved . . . .’ ”

Simply believe on Him as the one who bore your sin, died in your place, was buried, and whom God resurrected. His resurrection powerfully assures that the believer can claim everlasting life when Jesus is received as Savior.

“But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, evento them that believe on His name” (John 1:12).

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13).

Whosoever includes you. Shall be saved means not maybe, nor can, but shall be saved. Surely, you realize you are a sinner. Right now, wherever you are, repenting, lift your heart to God in prayer.

In Luke 18:13, the sinner prayed:

“God be merciful to me a sinner.” Just pray: “Oh God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus was my substitute when He died on the Cross. I believe His shed blood, death, burial, and resurrection were for me. I now receive Him as my Savior. I thank You for the forgiveness of my sins, the gift of salvation and everlasting life, because of Your merciful grace. Amen.”

Just take God at His word and claim His salvation by faith. Believe, and you will be saved. No church, no lodge, no good works can save you. Remember, God does the saving. All of it!

God’s simple plan of salvation is: You are a sinner. Therefore, unless you believe on Jesus Who died in your place, you will spend eternity in Hell. If you believe on Him as your crucified, buried, and risen Savior, you receive forgiveness for all of your sins and His gift of eternal salvation by faith.

You say, “Surely, it cannot be that simple.” Yes, that simple! It is scriptural. It is God’s plan.My friend, believe on Jesus and receive Him as Savior today.

If His plan is not perfectly clear, read this tract over and over, without laying it down, until you understand it. Your soul is worth more than all the world.

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?”(Mark 8:36). Be sure you are saved. If you lose your soul, you miss Heaven and lose all. Please! Let God save you this very moment.

God’s power will save you, keep you saved, and enable you to live a victorious Christian life. “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, Who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Do not trust your feelings. They change. Stand on God’s promises. They never change. After you are saved, there are three things to practice daily for spiritual growth:

  • Pray — you talk to God.
  • Read your Bible — God talks to you.
  • Witness — you talk for God.
  • Join a Bible Study — You will grow in your faith.
  • Develop relationships with other believers – Fellowship is so important!

I listen to your mp3’s nearly all night while I’m working.   Someone I know questioned me about John 8:31.  This verse speaks of “the Jews who believed in him (Jesus) and then in the next few verses Jesus calls them children of the devil that wanted to kill him.  If they believed in him I don’t understand how this could be.

Sanctification

Q. My question is about sanctification.  I have family members that can point to a time in their lives (30 years ago) when they accepted Christ as their personal savior, but they show no ‘spiritual fruit’ at all .  They do not live as Christians in any sense of the word.  I know that the bible basically says “once saved always saved”, but if there is no spiritaul growth & no desire for God or His word, meaning they are not being sanctified, is it possible that the conversion was not genuine?  I’m confused about this. Does this mean that they are still saved, but it will affect their rewards once in Heaven? continue reading

Is There A Bible Just For The Church?

Q.  I was taught that the verses in the Bible that referenced the Jews  are now meant for the Church, since they rejected Jesus Christ. We are the spiritual Jews, the chosen people. If that isn’t so and verses like Jeremiah 29:11 have no application to me personally, why read them?  When I need verses to hold onto in times of trouble, verses to commit to memory to comfort me in the dark hours of the night, I want the ones that apply to the Church. Why hasn’t there been a Bible written with just verses that apply to the Church?

The dying thief: What was so great about his faith?

There are many acts of extraordinary faith in the Bible. The one that has impressed me the most concerns the dying thief on the cross. We could take the approach that he had nothing to lose, so he decided to cast his lot with Jesus. But this makes absolutely no sense of the text and the context.
In this conversion we have a specific fulfillment of Christ’s first words on the cross. No sooner had Christ spoken the words, “Father, forgive them,” had the Father answered that prayer by turning a once-reviling criminal into a Christ-glorifying saint. While the soon-to-be converted criminal was not directly responsible for Christ’s death, he nevertheless joined with those who were and was thus indirectly addressed when Christ asked for God to forgive “them.”
Christ, the sinless one, was numbered with or counted among the transgressors (Isa. 53:12; Luke 22:37), all of whom have a bigger problem than the day-to-day sins they commit. They hate Christ, the God-man. Anyone who has a master other than the Lord Jesus hates him (Lk. 16:13; Gal. 4:8). That these two criminals loathed him is clearly manifested during the crucifixion: “And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way” (Matt. 27:44).
When the criminal who was converted was doing his worst against Christ, Christ was doing his best for this criminal.
The conversion of the one criminal was most extraordinary and testifies to the power of Christ’s prayer and the grace of God. Why?
This criminal’s faith did not come at a time such as when Christ turned water into wine; or performed miracles, such as walking on water, opening the eyes of a blind man, or raising Lazarus from the dead. No! The criminal believed on the Messiah while he was hanging as one cursed upon a tree. The criminal trusted in and boldly defended the one whose disciples had abandoned him. Jesus was at his lowest when this criminal asked to be remembered in Christ’s kingdom.
When he was on the cross, did anyone publicly cry out, as John the Baptist did, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (Jn. 1:29)? But this is essentially what the dying thief did. Little wonder, then, that Christ should promise him a place in his kingdom: “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Lk. 23:43).
The criminal acknowledged he was guilty; he acknowledged that Christ was not (“this man has done nothing wrong”); he feared God; but, and here is the key: the criminal did not merely want to be in a better place. He wanted to be with Christ in a better place: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom” (Lk. 23:42). The criminal believed “against all hope”.
Heaven is a better place because that is where Christ is. Everyone wants to go to heaven, but not everyone wants to go to Christ’s heaven. Not so with this criminal: he saw, with his eyes, Christ at his worst; but with the eyes of faith, he believed that Christ would soon be at his best, and so put his faith in a dying king.
Christ is always – always! – willing to save even the most miserable of sinners. A recognition of guilt (Lk. 23:40) and a confidence in him and not ourselves (Lk. 23:42) will always lead to the most assuring truth a sinner can receive: the Savior welcomes such into his paradise!

They think if something goes wrong in childhood, the child might begin to drift spiritually or wander morally. But the truth is that our children are already marred by sin from the moment they are conceived. The drive to sin is embedded in their very natures. All that is required for the tragic harvest is that children be allowed to give unrestrained expression to those evil desires.

In hopes of fencing in their children’s depraved natures, many Christian parents have taken various philosophical approaches to parenting. But do these parenting philosophies truly protect children from exploring the full extent of their sinfulness? And more importantly, do they point sinners to the Savior?

Behaviorism Is Not the Answer

Certainly both manners and discipline are necessary aspects of proper parenting. But teaching our kids manners is no solution to the problem of human depravity. Tacking on punishment for wrongdoing won’t solve the problem, either. In fact, parents who concentrate all their energies on correcting external behavior, or staving off misbehavior with threats of discipline, may be doing little more than training hypocrites.

I’ve seen this occur repeatedly. I know Christian parents who think their parenting is successful because they have taught their children to act politely on cue, answer with “Yes, Sir” and “No, Ma’am,” and speak to adults when spoken to. But behind the parents’ backs, those same kids can be the most ill-behaved, unruly kids in the church—especially when unsupervised among peers. And the parents seem blissfully unaware of the children’s true character. Almost every teacher and youth leader knows the frustration of trying to deal with a problem child whose parents simply refuse to believe their child is capable of serious wrongdoing. This is often because the parents have focused exclusively on issues like public behavior, external decorum, and courtesy to other adults, but they have no understanding of the real state of their own child’s heart. Often the child is merely conforming to avoid punishment.

Merely enforcing external behavior with the threat of discipline is sheer behaviorism. The good manners produced by such an approach are nothing more than a conditioned response. While that kind of behavior control may appear to work wonders for a time (especially when the parents are nearby), it does not address the problem of depravity, which is a heart problem.

Isolationism Is Not the Answer

Many Christian parents think they have fulfilled the parenting task if they build a cocoon around their kids to isolate them from bad influences. They restrict their children’s exposure to television, ban popular music from the home, and sometimes even forbid any fraternization with children whose parents may not share their commitment to this kind of isolation.

There is certainly much on television and in other entertainment media from which our kids should be shielded. And since the standards are deteriorating so rapidly, it is essential for Christian parents to provide some kind of insulation for their kids. It is simply reckless parenting to permit your kids to surf the Web unsupervised, listen to whatever popular music they choose, or watch television and see movies without any parental oversight. Parents who blithely forfeit control over what their kids see and hear in a culture like this are guilty of appalling malfeasance.

But total isolation is not the answer, either. Naiveté is not a trait to be cultivated in our children. Prudishness is foolish immaturity. It leaves our children gullible and vulnerable. The naïve are the easiest targets for the seductive wiles of temptation. Throughout the book of Proverbs, the naïve (“simple” in many translations) are held up as negative examples:

•    “How long, O naive ones, will you love being simple-minded?” (Proverbs 1:22)
•    “The waywardness of the naive will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them.” (1:32)
•    “The naive believes everything, but the sensible man considers his steps. . . . The naive inherit foolishness, but the sensible are crowned with knowledge.” (14:15, 18)
•    “The prudent sees the evil and hides himself, but the naive go on, and are punished for it.” (22:3; cf. 27:12)

Please do not misunderstand; there is a kind of holy innocence that we must cultivate not only in our children but also in ourselves. The apostle Paul wrote, “I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil” (Romans 16:19). But in that context he was speaking of knowledge that comes from personal experience. This verse came at the end of several chapters of practical instruction from the apostle. He was saying he wanted the Romans to be well-practiced in good behavior, but inexperienced when it came to evil.

Inexperience and naiveté are not the same thing. Paul did not mean he wanted them oblivious to the existence of evil. He was certainly not advocating deliberate ignorance or a willful blindness to the reality of evil. He wanted them to be prudent, not prudish. The difference is significant.

Parents cannot—and should not—try to isolate their children totally from the truth about sin and the subtleties of temptation. We should not cultivate the kind of “innocence” in our children that leaves them exposed and vulnerable to temptations they never even imagined existed. Our task is to teach them discernment, not raise them to be prudes.

I know of one Christian parenting course that encourages moms and dads to avoid giving their children any kind of detailed instruction whatsoever about sexual matters, not only during childhood and adolescence, but up to and including the son or daughter’s wedding night. The child’s inevitable questions about anatomy and bodily development during puberty are supposed to be deflected with vague answers, making it clear that the very topic of sex is taboo. If questions about reproduction need to be addressed, they should be dealt with using the parts of a flower, for fear that anything more explicit will take away the child’s innocence. According to this program, mere exposure to the facts about human reproduction jeopardizes your child’s moral innocence. This particular course goes as far as cautioning parents not to expose their kids to classical art exhibits because they include statues and paintings that portray nude figures.

That sort of isolationism is a recipe for disaster. It is a wholly unbiblical perspective. Sex is not portrayed in Scripture as inherently evil, nor is it treated as taboo. Sex outside of marriage is certainly sinful, but within marriage, the union of husband and wife is holy and honorable (Hebrews 13:4). The subject per se poses no threat to a proper, godly, moral innocence. How can our children hope to have a proper and biblical understanding of these things if we treat the subject itself as a threat to their innocence? Scripture certainly does not do that. An entire book of the Old Testament—the Song of Solomon—was written to celebrate the joy and the purity of marital intimacy. There is certainly no command or principle in Scripture that would make such matters off limits for parental instruction.

On the contrary, instructing children properly in such matters lies at the heart of the parents’ responsibility. Abdicate this responsibility and you practically ensure that your children will be more influenced by the values they learn from schoolteachers and peers. It is nearly impossible, and certainly a wrong-headed approach to parenting, to keep children totally isolated from all influences outside the family. So in all likelihood they will learn about these things from other sources, no matter how they have been sheltered. If the parents have declined to foster a godly knowledge of sex and human reproduction, the likelihood that the child will develop ungodly attitudes toward the subject are multiplied.

Besides, the notion that parents are preserving a child’s innocence by isolating them ignores the reality that many of our sinful desires are inborn. Sinful appetites are inherent in our fallen nature. They are not merely learned behaviors. Refuse to teach your children anything about sex and you may set loose the child’s own evil imagination to work overtime.

A similar principle holds true for those who attempt to isolate their children from awareness of secular culture. Extreme isolationism costs parents valuable opportunities to teach their kids discernment. For example, it may well be more profitable to watch Star Wars with your kids and teach them how to identify and refute its erroneous New Age philosophies, rather than trying to keep your children spiritually quarantined, completely unaware of what they will face in the future.

In the first place, parents will not be able to isolate their children forever. The day will come when they are exposed to the real world, and they had better be prepared with discernment skills and wisdom to perceive and resist the wiles of the devil and the enticements of the world.

But in the second place, it is simply a mistake to think that shutting our kids off from outside influences will somehow keep them from any temptation to evil. The most persistent source of temptation is not the world or the devil, but the flesh. You can often elude the influence of the world and the devil, but you cannot escape the influence of your own flesh. The flesh is a constant source of temptation from which you cannot sequester your children.

It is a grave mistake to think of our children as little angels who need to be handled delicately so they don’t get corrupted. Rather, they are corrupt little sinners who need to be led to righteousness.

Scripture’s Solution

There is only one biblical answer to the problem of depravity: regeneration. Next time we’ll look at how to lead your child to Christ.

There have been a couple of really good blog posts recently about the need to be discerning in what we read. Good reviews, impressive recommendations, even the stellar reputation of the authors shouldn’t be all that we rely on in deciding the worth of a book. Scripture tells us to be careful about the messages we listen to and to test them based on Scripture. In Acts, the people of Berea are commended for “examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.”

It’s in that spirit that I’m writing this review. Not to score points in a debate or to win an argument. Not to prove someone wrong or to pat myself on the back. Bad doctrine hurts the church, and specifically, it hurts the people in the pews.
