The California Senate voted Tuesday to allow undocumented workers living in the state to obtain medical insurance through its Obamacare health exchange.

The U.S. Senate is on course to pass legislation that would revive expired anti-terrorism programs with new limits, though any changes would require another House vote before a final version can go to President Barack Obama.

Service industries expanded in May at the slowest pace in 13 months as orders eased, signaling tempered improvement in the biggest part of the U.S. economy.

Vladimir Putin is allocating unprecedented amounts of secret funds to accelerate Russia’s largest military buildup since the Cold War. The part of the federal budget that is so-called black — authorized but not itemized — has doubled since 2010 to 21 percent and now totals $60 billion, the Gaidar Institute, an independent think tank in Moscow, estimates.

The trade deficit in the U.S. narrowed more than forecast in April as imports receded, signaling merchandise flows were returning to normal following a port-related surge. The gap shrank by 19.2 percent to $40.9 billion from the prior month’s $50.6 billion that was the widest in more than six years.

A presidential declaration in December started the gradual normalization of relations-just last week, in a sign of progress, the U.S. removed Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terrorism-and touched off a rush in the tourism trade.

Australians saved the least since the global financial crisis last quarter, helping the economy grow faster than expected even as business investment waned. The nation’s savings ratio dropped to 8.3 percent, the lowest since 2008.

U.S. companies are borrowing money faster than they’re earning it — and they’re doing it at the quickest pace since the aftermath of the financial crisis. Instead of deploying the debt to build factories, hire new workers or expand product lines, companies are funneling more of their money to shareholders or using it to fund deals. Stock buybacks reached an all-time high last year and the volume of global mergers and acquisitions announced so far this year would make it the second-busiest ever.

After Russia’s finance ministry rejected a draft law last month that would have paved the way for more so-called alternative finance, including Shariah-compliant transactions, the Russian Orthodox Church said it’s working with the lower house of Parliament and consulting with experts in a bid to develop a system of finance that eschews the payment of interest.

“In disquisitions of every kind there are certain primary truths, or first principles, upon which all subsequent reasoning must depend.” —Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 31, 1788

Congress Cuts the Line on NSA Data Collection

The Senate passed the USA Freedom Act Tuesday without amendment, and Barack Obama signed it, curbing the NSA’s mass collection of every American’s phone records. While it’s a victory for privacy advocates, work remains in ensuring that the U.S. government respects the Fourth Amendment. Instead of scraping up records on every call in the U.S., the act dictates that private phone companies will keep the records and the government can request the information. The Senate’s 67-32 vote split the Republican Party between its leadership and the more libertarian-leaning lawmakers. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell complained, “There are a number of us who feel very strongly that this is a significant weakening of the tools that were put in place in the wake of 9/11 to protect the country.” But Rep. James Sensenbrenner, the author of the Patriot Act, said some of those “tools” (i.e., mass data collection) were never meant to be given. Notably, Sen. Rand Paul, perhaps the most prominent advocate for NSA reform, voted against the USA Freedom Act, saying it didn’t go far enough. With Sen. Ron Wyden, Paul proposed nine amendments that would have required the government to offer greater justification before it spied on a citizen. For over a decade, the country has been in a constant state of war, allowing an erosion of Fourth Amendment rights because it feared a “lone-wolf terrorist” attack or another 9/11. But a state of fear is not a mark of a free people.

The TSA Is Groping for Relevancy

In a recent internal investigation into the TSA’s airport screening process, “red teams” working for the Department of Homeland Security were able to sneak bombs and other weapons through the TSA’s line 95% of the time. In other words, of the 70 times DHS tested the system, the TSA caught only three attempts. For an agency with “security” as its middle name, that’s a dismal and dangerous track record. In a statement, DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson tried to downplay the findings. “The numbers in these reports never look good out of context,” he said, “but they are a critical element in the continual evolution of our aviation security. … The Inspector General’s preliminary test results are classified, and it is not appropriate or prudent to publicly describe these results.” But the findings were serious enough for Johnson to order a special briefing on the report. Then the axe fell swiftly, as the acting head of the TSA was reassigned Monday. Acting Deputy Director Mark Hatfield Jr. will take over. As Reason’s J.D. Tuccille notes, the vulnerabilities in TSA’s security net have been “revealed, complained about, and baked in for years.” The Heritage Foundation’s David Inserra argues that perhaps it’s time for the TSA to step aside and let private security firms do the job cheaper, friendlier and better. Clearly, bureaucrats groping grandma didn’t make us more secure.

Warren Won’t Run, Nobody Hardest Hit

Say it ain’t so! Time magazine reports on the demise of the movement to draft Elizabeth Warren to run for president: “Six months after launching ‘Run Warren Run,’ a quixotic campaign to draft Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren into the 2016 presidential race, the two progressive organizations behind it will call it quits and focus more broadly on a populist agenda in the 2016 presidential race, according to a spokesman.” Warren has long been the great “Native American” hope for leftists who can’t stomach Hillary Clinton, but she’s been pretty consistent in saying she won’t run. Ironically, Warren is more powerful in the Senate and among Democrats in general because of her decision not to run. Had she challenged Hillary and failed, she would’ve quickly been relegated to backbencher status. But now she can benefit from the unquenched thirst of her acolytes. And she didn’t even have to build that.

Et Tu, Bruce?

By Nate Jackson

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it.'” This isn’t a treatise on faith, but, for Christians, those words are where any discussions of gender and marriage begin. For those who don’t share our faith, we’d simply point to the Declaration of Independence, in which the Founders acknowledged that Liberty comes from our Creator. And family is the third pillar of Liberty.

But Bruce Jenner didn’t start with objective truth. He started with Bruce Jenner.

Before the aptly named Vanity Fair’s upcoming cover story on the former Olympic Decathlon champion’s transition from Bruce to Caitlyn, Jenner described his view of how God created him: “God’s looking down, making little Bruce. … He says, ‘Okay, what are we gonna do with this one? Make him a smart kid, very determined.’ … And then when he’s just finishing he says, ‘Let’s wait a second.’ God looks down and chuckles a little bit and says, ‘Hey, let’s give him the soul of a female.’”

Jenner insists he’s only coming to terms with who God really made him to be: “If I was lying on my deathbed and I had kept this secret and never ever did anything about it, I would be lying there saying, ‘You just blew your entire life. You never dealt with yourself,’ and I don’t want that to happen.”

God’s Word actually has a lot to say about the subject, and the voices in Bruce’s head are completely at odds with all of it.

So how does 21st century American pop culture respond to his very public and self-congratulatory — yet still physically incomplete — sexual transition?

Mostly with fawning accolades. Media stories erupted everywhere, giving deference to Bruce’s chosen gender instead of his God-given biological one. His Wikipedia entry has been altered to reflect that “she” won Olympic medals — 40 years before this transition. ESPN will award him the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the July ESPYs. Even Barack Obama found time between rounds of golf to tweet, “It takes courage to share your story.” Jenner quickly set a Twitter record for reaching one million followers — beating Obama’s record.

And, hey, he’s a Republican!

In short, our world includes an ever-increasing population of broken people who celebrate brokenness, while attacking the broken people (like us) who say there’s a better way and a higher truth.

Which prompts the question: What’s courageous about basking in the glory of the media spotlight?

Based on Jenner’s revelations, he is clearly a troubled soul. Compassion, prayer and treatment are appropriate responses. But affirmation? Few things could be less compassionate or helpful.

The comparisons to other mental illnesses and destructive behaviors are numerous and illustrative, albeit imprecise.

RedState’s Erick Erickson focused on behavior, arguing, “[I]f an alcoholic told you that his authentic self was to drink, you would not encourage that. If a person told you his authentic self was to be attracted to small boys, you would not encourage that. If a person told you that his authentic self was to mutilate his body, you would not encourage that.”

Columnist Ben Shapiro recounted a personal story regarding the mental illness aspect, writing, “My grandfather was deeply mentally ill. He spent nearly a year in a psychiatric institution after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder; he heard the radio talking to him. He became suicidal. He spent years battling the condition, until he was prescribed lithium. For the next several decades, the medication brought his mental illness under control. Nothing would have been crueler to my grandfather than had society told him that his delusions were correct — that the radio was, in fact, talking to him; that the curtains were indeed threatening him; that he was normal, and that it was the stereotypes of the world inducing his paranoia. … It’s cruel to allow a mentally ill person to exploit himself in public, but the political left is happy to do so in order to perpetuate the pseudo-scientific nonsense that a man can magically turn into a woman.”

Also, Canada’s National Post had a story this week about people who become disabled by choice, cutting off limbs they don’t want. These supposed “transabled” people are mentally ill.

These comparisons illustrate a painful truth: Leftists don’t care about Bruce “Caitlyn” Jenner; they care about an agenda to remake our culture without good or bad, right or wrong, up or down — and most certainly without God. To them, Jenner is merely a tool who normalizes aberration. Leftists are tired of feeling guilty, so, instead of turning to their Creator, they glory in their brokenness. Dysfunction becomes virtue.

Meanwhile, the Left has duped more than half the American public into thinking homosexuals make up a far bigger part of the population than is true. Therefore, Americans are left to conclude as they checkout at the supermarket next to all those tabloids that Jenner is perfectly normal.

Ironically, while the culture celebrates Jenner’s transition, conversion therapy (which can actually help homosexuals who want to go straight) is illegal in some states. Ponder that one.

Next comes more of the inevitable punishment for those who aren’t sufficiently “tolerant.” Consider Brendan Eich, the creator of JavaScript, the cofounder and CEO of Mozilla (which develops the Firefox web browser), who was forced to resign as CEO of the company he founded for contributing to a lawful ballot initiative that opposed same-sex marriage. Or think of the Christian bakers who were forced to bake the cake for same-sex weddings.

Indeed, The Washington Times reports, “The Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued guidelines Monday suggesting that employers allow transgender employees access to the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity.” Just wait until this is no longer a suggestion.

Jenner’s story is about far more than celebration and tolerance. It’s about coerced compliance and mandated approval. Jenner is merely a pawn in the Left’s ongoing “coexist” game.

In conclusion, let’s consider another passage of Scripture: “God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator.” We shouldn’t worship Jenner. We should pray for him, for he needs his Creator’s healing redemption.

Tony Perkins: “When the courts struck down the Tar Heels’ 2012 marriage amendment, North Carolina’s Administrative Office of the Court decided to chuck the First Amendment along with it, issuing a decree that officials would either perform same-sex ‘marriages’ or clean out their offices. … [Gov.] Pat McCrory (R) vetoed a perfectly reasonable opt-out for the state’s officials. Under the measure passed by the House and Senate, magistrates could exempt themselves from same-sex ‘weddings’ if they agreed to recuse themselves from all weddings for at least six months. If a judge declined to officiate, another one would be brought in to perform the service — meaning that no harm would be done to the state or the couples by this law. … Unfortunately for America, the Left isn’t satisfied with compromise, even genuinely sensible ones like North Carolina’s. Their goal is to tyrannize and terrorize until the country fully submits. As a result, 2.3% of the population gets 100% of the protection. Once again, liberals want ‘tolerance’ but refuse to give it. It’s like driving around with a ‘coexist’ bumper sticker while you run over people with different beliefs.”

Upright, Part I: “I wonder how one goes about determining whether a person is privileged. White privilege can’t be based on median income. Why? It turns out that Asian-American households had the highest median income ($68,636) in 2012. Median income for white households was $57,000. Maybe our academic elite should condemn Asian privilege instead of white privilege. But there’s another problem. My income puts me in America’s top 5 percent. If those who condemn white privilege could not see my dark brown skin color, they would also condemn me for white privilege. The bottom line to this campus nonsense is that ‘privilege’ has become the new word for ‘personal achievement.'” —Walter Williams

Upright, Part II: “A ‘liberal paradise’ would be a place where everybody has guaranteed employment, free comprehensive health care, free education, free food, free housing, free clothing, free utilities and only law enforcement personnel have guns. And, believe it or not, such a liberal utopia does indeed exist. It’s called prison.” —Maricopa County AZ Sheriff Joe Arpaio

The BIG Lie: “One of my core principles is that I will never engage in politics in which I’m trying to divide people.” —Barack Obama

Advice from a narcissist: “[W]hen I look at other political careers that I admire, I think the most important thing is to have a sense of principle and why you’re in public service. I think sometimes people want to be in public service just because they like seeing their name up in lights; they like being important. And that’s a bad reason to go into politics.” —Barack Obama

Demo-gogues: “Fossil fuel companies and their allies are funding a massive and sophisticated campaign to mislead the American people about the environmental harm caused by carbon pollution. … The parallels between what the tobacco industry did and what the fossil fuel industry is doing now are striking.” —Sheldon Whitehouse

And last… “What is it about trains that makes them objects of endless fascination to small children and Democrats?” —Frank Fleming

Has Caitlyn Jenner Become The Most Popular Woman In America?

Caitlyn JennerAt the age of 65, Caitlyn Jenner has become far more famous than Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner ever was.  She is the most high-profile American to ever identify as transgender, and right now she is getting a global tsunami of media attention – most of it extraordinarily positive.  When Caitlyn’s Vanity Fair cover was released on Monday, it was front page news for almost every major news source in the western world.  But it isn’t just the media that is fawning over her.  Within just a few hours, Caitlyn Jenner received more than 100,000 likes on a brand new Facebook page that she set up for her new identity.  On Twitter, the euphoria was even greater.  Within fours hours and three minutes of setting up her new Twitter account, she had a million followers.  That beat the official world record that had previously been held by Barack Obama.  As I write this, she now has more than 2.2 million followers.  So precisely why has Caitlyn Jenner become such an overnight sensation, and could it be possible that she is now the most popular woman in America? 2 Things That Are Happening Right Now That Have Never Happened Outside Of A Recession

Question Dollar - Public DomainIf we are not heading into a recession, why does our economy continue to act as if that is precisely what is happening?  As you will see below, we learned this week that factory orders have declined year over year for six months in a row.  That is something that has never happened outside of a time of recession.  We have also seen new orders for consumer goods fall dramatically.  In fact, the only time we have seen a more dramatic decline in that number was during the last recession.  And when you add these two items to what I have written about previously, the overall economic picture becomes even more disturbing.  Corporate profits have fallen for two quarters in a row, our exports fell by 7.6 percent during the first quarter of 2015, and U.S. GDP contracted by 0.7 percent during Q1.  Even though Barack Obama and the mainstream media are willingly ignoring them, the truth is that these numbers are absolutely screaming that we are going into a new recession. Once Taboo, Some Behaviors Now More Acceptable in U.S.

by Marsha West

According to a recent Gallup poll:

While a select few actions remain deeply taboo for much of the country, there has been an increasing shift to moral acceptability for some of these over time. Such actions include suicide (which 19% of Americans call “morally acceptable”), polygamy (16%) and cloning humans (15%). On the other hand, “married men and women having an affair” has remained at the bottom of a list of 19 moral behaviors Gallup has measured, with only 8% considering it morally acceptable.

Obama Warns That Israel could lose ‘Credibility’ over Netanyahu’s stance on Palestine

Posted: 03 Jun 2015 06:30 AM PDT

Obama Warns That Israel could lose ‘Credibility’ over Netanyahu’s stance on PalestineIsraeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s inconsistent views on Palestine could cost Israel its world “credibility,” US President Barack Obama has warned. This is the latest jab at Netanyahu in the ongoing US-Israeli rift over Palestinian statehood. “The danger here is that Israel as a whole loses credibility,” Obama told Israel’s Channel 2 in an interview on Tuesday. “Already the international community does not believe that Israel is serious about a two-state solution.”

Obama was responding to a question regarding Netanyahu’s contradictory comments made about the creation of a Palestinian state before and after the March’s general election. During the campaign, Netanyahu first ruled out Palestinian statehood and then later backpedaled on the issue. In one of his most recent comments, Netanyahu claimed he supported a creation of a Palestinian state, calling for peace talks to resume. FULL REPORT

Creflo Dollar Ministry Responds: ‘We Plan to Acquire a Gulfstream G650 Because It Is the Best’

Creflo Dollar Ministry Responds: ‘We Plan to Acquire a Gulfstream G650 Because It Is the Best’Just weeks after Pastor Creflo Dollar, founder of World Changers Church International, offered a fiery defense of his controversial campaign to raise millions for the purchase of a highly coveted aircraft, the board of his ministry is apologizing over the “confusion” that was created by a video appeal that Dollar released earlier this year. “We fully acknowledge that the campaign video did not do a good job of communicating the request, and we apologize for any confusion it may have caused – it is in the process of being revamped and will be re-released when complete,” reads a statement on Dollar’s website.

But the ministry seemingly has no plans to back away from its quest to purchase a $65 million Gulfstream G650 aircraft — one that Business Insider recently called, the “biggest, fastest, and overall best private jet money can buy.”

“We plan to acquire a Gulfstream G650 because it is the best, and it is a reflection of the level of excellence at which this organization chooses to operate,” the statement continues. “We, the World Changers family, so value the lives, the safety and the well-being of our pastors and leaders that we wish to provide to them the best air travel experience possible.” FULL REPORT

Obama raises possibility of allowing U.N. vote on Palestinian statehood

Obama raises possibility of allowing U.N. vote on Palestinian statehoodPresident Obama took a step toward a tougher line with Israel in an interview released Tuesday, raising the possibility that the U.S. will allow a United Nations vote on issues related to the Palestinians if the two sides make no meaningful movement toward peace. In an interview with an Israeli television station, Obama noted that his administration has “up until this point” quashed such efforts at the U.N. while insisting that the Israelis and Palestinians must negotiate a resolution. But he said it is a challenge for the U.S. to keep demanding that the Palestinians negotiate in good faith if no one believes the Israelis are doing the same.

“How do we move off what appears right now to be a hopeless situation and move it back towards a hopeful situation?” Obama asked in the interview. “That will require more than just words. That will require some actions. And that’s going to be hard work, though, because right now I think there’s not a lot of confidence in the process.” The comment was the latest sign that Obama has concluded that the U.S. must rethink its stance on the Mideast peace process if it is to maintain credibility in the world. Tropical Storm Blanca, Brewing Off Mexican Coast, to Become Hurricane

Posted: 03 Jun 2015 06:12 AM PDT

Tropical Storm Blanca, Brewing Off Mexican Coast, to Become Hurricane Tropical Storm Blanca’s increasing airstreams and cooling cloud temperatures are two reasons meteorologists are expecting the storm system off the coast of Mexico to develop into a hurricane. The International Space Station’s RapidScat device and NASA’s Aqua satellite aided meteorologists in coming to that conclusion this week, Phys.org reported. Blanca developed early Monday morning and turned into a tropical cyclone late in the day. The system is currently centered about 365 miles southwest of Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and is moving west around 1 mph, The Associated Press reported.

Information from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) core observatory showed Monday that several areas of powerful precipitation were situated east of Blanca’s midpoint. The storm’s top altitudes also touched heights of more than 9.3 miles, indicating strong thunderstorms, Phys.org noted. Later in the day, the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder device that hovers onboard NASA’s Aqua satellite collected measurable data on Blanca. AIRS figures from the flyover revealed that cloud top temperatures were cooling, showing an additional uplift in the atmosphere. FULL REPORT

Indonesia on ‘highest alert’ as Sinabung volcano rumbles violently

Indonesia on ‘highest alert’ as Sinabung volcano rumbles violentlyMore than 6,000 residents living near the Mount Sinabung volcano on Indonesia’s Sumatra Island were told to evacuate Wednesday following a sharp increase in volcanic activity. Mount Sinabung has erupted intermittently since late 2013. Sixteen people were killed and tens of thousands were temporarily displaced during an intense period of eruptions early last year. The alert for Sinabung has been raised to the highest level, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency. The lava dome at Sinabung has grown in volume to more than 3 million cubic meters, making it unstable, Mr Sutopo said.

“There is a risk for the collapse of the dome followed by block-and-ash flows as far as 7 kilometers to the south-east,” he said. Mr. Sutopo said 2,053 families, or 6,179 people, living in eight hamlets on the southeastern slope of the volcano were affected by the evacuation order. “Priority will be given to 370 families within the radius of three kilometers,” he said. Nearly 2,000 people are still living in temporary shelters as a result of last year’s eruptions. Others either returned to their homes or were relocated elsewhere. EP

A perfect storm may be coming

Posted: 03 Jun 2015 05:59 AM PDT

A perfect storm may be coming While low benchmark rates around the world have led to more economic liquidity, they have also been linked to “severe market illiquidity,” Nouriel Roubini, co-founder of financial analysis firm RGE Monitor, said Monday in an op-ed published on The Guardian. This “paradox,” Roubini explained, has become apparent during several events over the last few years, including the “flash crash” of 2010, an event which saw U.S. stocks plummet nearly 10 percent in 30 minutes, the taper tantrum of 2013 and the almost-instant rise of 10-year German bund yields from 5 basis points to nearly 80 last month.

The economist also said this divergence between economic and market liquidity has been caused by a number of factors, including the rise of high-frequency traders. “In equity markets, high-frequency traders (HFTs) … account for a larger share of transactions,” he said. “Indeed, trading in the U.S. nowadays is concentrated at the beginning and the last hour of the trading day, when HFTs are most active; for the rest of the day, markets are illiquid, with few transactions.” FULL REPORT

Iris ID to build biometric voter database for African country

Posted: 03 Jun 2015 05:54 AM PDT

Iris ID to build biometric voter database for African country Iris biometrics firm Iris ID has been chosen by an unnamed African country to help create a fraud-free voter registration list and ensure fair 2015 national elections. Iris ID wrote in a statement that the country’s election commission has chosen iris as a solution over fingerprint for the country’s 1.2 million registered voters.

The Iris ID product was selected due to its accuracy at detecting duplicate registration attempts and its speed of enrolment, as well as the speed with which the system identifies registered voters based on the unique characteristics of the iris.  “This is the first time iris recognition technology has been selected for voter registration and its adoption is now spreading widely,” said Mohammed Murad, vice president, global sales and business development for Iris ID. “The Iris ID system provides this country with one of the most sophisticated registration systems in Africa – really in the world.” FULL REPORT

Obama Forcing Faith-Based Organizations to Hire Homosexuals and Transsexuals

Obama Forcing Faith-Based Organizations to Hire Homosexuals and TranssexualsThe Obama Administration will soon require faith-based, charitable groups which receive federal grants to hire homosexuals and transsexuals. That disturbing revelation comes straight out from published reports from the Center for Family and Human Rights. Here’s the backstory: Last summer, Obama inked an executive order requiring federal contractors to provide what Congress refused to pass, namely civil rights status for sexual behavior or subjective gender identity.

Now Obama is reportedly adding the “sexual orientation and gender identity” mandate to humanitarian groups that receive federal grants as well. Federal contracts are awarded when a federal agency is acquiring something; grants are awarded when a federal agency is providing assistance. “Faith-based organizations are providing assistance in communities across America, such as adoption, youth centers, child care and development programs, youth counseling, shelter and much more,” said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel. The Economic Warning Signs of Destruction Are Right Before Our EyesBurning oil fields, smaller holocausts, the destruction of the World Trade Center 14 years ago—it all points to an American economic downfall. Or so says author John Shorey on the Jim Bakker Show. Shorey is deep-diving into what he calls the “lost prophecies” of David Wilkerson, which are seemingly lining up with the economic Shemitah in September.

“I shared this with a friend of David Wilkerson, who agreed that this is what David was seeing, even if he didn’t know what he was seeing,” Shorey says. FULL REPORT

“My Last Day” — the Jesus Anime

9 powerful minutes of animation that begins with a thief behind bars watching the scourging of Jesus, and it ends with the thief dying next to Jesus, and waking to see Him in a beautiful place.

The dying thief: What was so great about his faith?

There are many acts of extraordinary faith in the Bible. The one that has impressed me the most concerns the dying thief on the cross. We could take the approach that he had nothing to lose, so he decided to cast his lot with Jesus. But this makes absolutely no sense of the text and the context.
In this conversion we have a specific fulfillment of Christ’s first words on the cross. No sooner had Christ spoken the words, “Father, forgive them,” had the Father answered that prayer by turning a once-reviling criminal into a Christ-glorifying saint. While the soon-to-be converted criminal was not directly responsible for Christ’s death, he nevertheless joined with those who were and was thus indirectly addressed when Christ asked for God to forgive “them.”
Christ, the sinless one, was numbered with or counted among the transgressors (Isa. 53:12; Luke 22:37), all of whom have a bigger problem than the day-to-day sins they commit. They hate Christ, the God-man. Anyone who has a master other than the Lord Jesus hates him (Lk. 16:13; Gal. 4:8). That these two criminals loathed him is clearly manifested during the crucifixion: “And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way” (Matt. 27:44).
When the criminal who was converted was doing his worst against Christ, Christ was doing his best for this criminal.
The conversion of the one criminal was most extraordinary and testifies to the power of Christ’s prayer and the grace of God. Why?
This criminal’s faith did not come at a time such as when Christ turned water into wine; or performed miracles, such as walking on water, opening the eyes of a blind man, or raising Lazarus from the dead. No! The criminal believed on the Messiah while he was hanging as one cursed upon a tree. The criminal trusted in and boldly defended the one whose disciples had abandoned him. Jesus was at his lowest when this criminal asked to be remembered in Christ’s kingdom.
When he was on the cross, did anyone publicly cry out, as John the Baptist did, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (Jn. 1:29)? But this is essentially what the dying thief did. Little wonder, then, that Christ should promise him a place in his kingdom: “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Lk. 23:43).
The criminal acknowledged he was guilty; he acknowledged that Christ was not (“this man has done nothing wrong”); he feared God; but, and here is the key: the criminal did not merely want to be in a better place. He wanted to be with Christ in a better place: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom” (Lk. 23:42). The criminal believed “against all hope”.
Heaven is a better place because that is where Christ is. Everyone wants to go to heaven, but not everyone wants to go to Christ’s heaven. Not so with this criminal: he saw, with his eyes, Christ at his worst; but with the eyes of faith, he believed that Christ would soon be at his best, and so put his faith in a dying king.
Christ is always – always! – willing to save even the most miserable of sinners. A recognition of guilt (Lk. 23:40) and a confidence in him and not ourselves (Lk. 23:42) will always lead to the most assuring truth a sinner can receive: the Savior welcomes such into his paradise!
“One is saved, and we may not despair; the other is lost, and we may not presume.” Spurgeon

Remember the thief.

It can be a difficult situation if someone you are witnessing to asks about the fate of a loved one who died and was not a Christian. Simply say, “Only God knows the eternal destiny of the person, and the Scriptures assure us that He will do what is right. So we can take consolation from that.” Some may be tempted to say that the loved one went to hell, but the truth is that we don’t know what happened minutes before their death. Remember the thief on the cross.
