Bible study: why would a loving God make a terrible place like Hell?

WINTERY KNIGHT

Theology that hits the spot Theology that hits the spot

It’s time for us to take a look in the Bible and make some sense of it, again. Today’s question is really “what does God expect us to be doing with our lives?” but I wanted the title of this post to be more eye-catching for non-Christians.

Why do people go to Hell?

Let’s start with finding out what we are supposed to be doing, and then we’ll know why there is a place like Hell for people who don’t do that to be separated from God.

Everyone has a moral obligation to choose how to use their time wisely during their life time. People everywhere, in all times and places, have had the choice of whether to spend more time thinking about the “big questions” or more time having fun and being selfish. Thinking about the big questions logically leads a person to making discoveries about God’s…

Trump Threatens “North American Union” Scheme
As Rush Limbaugh notes, Donald Trump has indeed made illegal immigration into an issue of national debate. The liberal media and now, apparently, the chairman of the Republican Party, have objected to Trump’s comments about criminal aliens. In fact, what Trump has done is jeopardize a plan that goes way beyond mere amnesty for illegals, and which has been on the drawing board for more than a decade. Simply put, the plan is to submerge the sovereignty of the United States of America and politically integrate the U.S., Canada, and Mexico into a trilateral entity called the North American Union.

Republicans Have Needlessly Undermined their Ability to Resist the Iran Deal

No American concession ever empties President Obama’s appeasement reservoir or satisfies Iran’s appetite. So on drone the negotiations toward a disastrous deal that would end sanctions against the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism while paving its way to a nuclear-weapons arsenal. In that connection, as Patrick Brennan noted on the Corner Friday, Senator Ben Sasse has penned a letter to the president that makes a compelling case against a key aspect of the contemplated Iran deal.

Specifically, on the critical matter of establishing violations by Iran that would theoretically trigger reinstatement of the sanctions,  Senator Sasse objects that Obama is foolishly shifting the burden of persuasion. The deal, he argues, would require the United States to prove Iranian violations rather than forcing Iran to prove it is in compliance.

Nuke deal will encourage Iranian terror, Foreign Ministry chief says

Foreign Ministry Director General Dore Gold in Jerusalem, June 1, 2015. (AFP/THOMAS COEX)

If a nuclear deal is struck between Iran and the world powers, Tehran will only have more reason to intensify its belligerency and support for terrorism across the Middle East, the head of Israel’s Foreign Ministry wrote on Friday in the Telegraph.

Responding to an earlier op-ed by Iranian Foreign Minister Muhammad Javar Zarif, Gold dismissed claims that a far-reaching accord will moderate and soften the Islamic Republic, or encourage it to give up its territorial ambitions across the region.

“The idea that Iran is a partner in the fight against terrorism is not only disingenuous but also absurd. What Zarif is seeking is a leap of faith by his Western readers, who are asked to believe that a country which has been repeatedly identified as the largest state supporter of terrorism in the world will suddenly be altered by an agreement over its nuclear program into an ally against terrorism. He is asking the world to simply trust Iran that this transformation is about to happen,” Gold notes.

Khamenei: Iran will fight against US arrogance regardless of nuke deal

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei delivers a speech in Tehran (AP/Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader/File)

Iran will continue to fight the United States’ “global arrogance” whether or not the world powers and Iran reach a nuclear agreement, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Saturday.

Speaking to a group of students in Tehran, Khamenei said Iran’s “fight [against] global arrogance is the core of our [1979 Islamic] revolution and we cannot put it on hold.

“Get ready to continue your fight against the global arrogance. The US is the true embodiment of the global arrogance,” said the Iranian leader in response to a student’s question about what would happen if the talks to curb the country’s nuclear program were successful.

Iran deal ‘done,’ Israeli report says, after major US concessions; remaining challenge Congressional approval

A deal has been reached between the world powers and Iran over the latter’s nuclear program after a series of major American concessions, Ehud Yaari, the Middle East affairs commentator for Israel’s Channel 2 television, said Friday night. “It is done. It is done,” he said, and will be signed “early next week.”

The aim of the agreement is to put a negotiated end to a 13-year standoff with Iran over its suspect nuclear program and to block its pathway to developing a nuclear bomb in exchange for lifting biting global sanctions. Israel’s leadership has relentlessly opposed the emerging agreement, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning that it will pave Iran’s path to a nuclear arsenal.

According to Yaari, Israel’s most respected Middle East analyst, the deal was reached because the Americans “have made a series of capitulations over the past two to three weeks in almost every key aspect that was being debated.”

Yaari said that even those in the US who had supported the agreement with Iran “admit that it is worse than they thought.” Now, he said, the ball is in the court of Democratic lawmakers who have to decide whether to support their president as he seeks to secure Congressional approval, or to join the vocal Republican opposition to an agreement.

Iran newspaper: If US attacks us, White House would be destroyed in 10 minutesPosted: 11 Jul 2015 09:33 PM PDT

An Iranian newspaper affiliated with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei warned that the White House would be “destroyed in under 10 minutes” were Iran’s nuclear facilities to come under attack, implied that the US was “on its deathbed” and argued that a nuclear deal with the US-led world powers would contradict the Quran, the media watchdog MEMRI reported.

“Let us have faith that America is incapable of any misstep [against Iran], and that it cannot even attack Iranian facilities without the White House being destroyed in under 10 minutes,” the editorial said, according to MEMRI. “Let us have faith that the old ‘village leader’ [i.e. the US] has fallen onto his deathbed, and that even in his youth, he never made the mistake [of daring to attack Iran], and that he, like Israel, remains mired in quicksand.” FULL REPORT

Hackers send ‘unexplained’ orders to German Patriot missile batteryPosted: 11 Jul 2015 07:12 PM PDT

Well, this is absolutely terrifying. According to The Local, hackers attacked a German Patriot surface-to-air missile battery, like the one shown above, stationed along the Turkish-Syria border. The cyber attack caused the battery to carryout “unexplained” orders.

It’s believed that cyber attackers managed to exploit the Patriot battery in two different ways. The first exploit was through the Sensor-Shooter-Interoperability, which controls interactions between the actual, physical missile launcher and its control system, while the other was on the guidance chip. These weaknesses could have allowed the hackers to steal data or, more worryingly, actually take control of the battery.

That’s a highly troubling scenario, particularly following the attack on Malaysian Flight 17 over the Ukraine, not to mention worries over aviation security in the Middle East and North Africa. While those concerns focused on highly transportable, shoulder-fired SAMs, the Patriot is a far more dangerous weapons system – according to a BBC fact file, it can track up to 100 targets and send guidance data to nine individual missiles. Pope Francis Issues a Fiery Call for New Economic World OrderPosted: 11 Jul 2015 06:53 PM PDT

IN FIERY SPEECHES, POPE FRANCIS EXCORIATES GLOBAL CAPITALISM

“Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.” Revelation 18:10

EDITOR’S NOTE: Pope Francis, having laid the groundwork over the past two years, has begun his ascent to obtaining raw political power. Francis is going to create a One World Church powered by the Revived Roman Empire, then he is going to combine the two. Just you watch and see…

His speeches can blend biblical fury with apocalyptic doom. Pope Francis does not just criticize the excesses of global capitalism. He compares them to the “dung of the devil.” He does not simply argue that systemic “greed for money” is a bad thing. He calls it a “subtle dictatorship” that “condemns and enslaves men and women.” FULL REPORT

Texans organize ‘Operation Counter Jade Helm’ to keep an eye on the federal troopsPosted: 11 Jul 2015 05:43 PM PDT

When the troops land in Texas for Operation Jade Helm next week, someone will be waiting for them. Hundreds of people have organized a “Counter Jade Helm” surveillance operation across the Southwestern states and in an effort to keep an eye on the contentious military drill that’s sparked many suspicious of Uncle Sam’s intentions.

Eric Johnston, a 51-year-old retired firefighter and sheriff’s deputy who lives in Kerrville, is a surveillance team leader in Texas. He’ll coordinate three groups of volunteers, about 20 folks in total, who hope to monitor the SEALs, Green Berets and Air Force Special Ops in Bastrop, Big Spring and Junction when Jade Helm kicks off on July 15. 24 hours to save the euro: Germany prepares for a ‘temporary’ Greek exit as euro project on the brink of collapsePosted: 11 Jul 2015 05:17 PM PDT

The German government has begun preparations for Greece to be ejected from the eurozone, as the European Union faces 24 hours to rescue the single currency project from the brink of collapse.Nine hours of acrimonious talks on Saturday night, saw finance ministers fail reach an agreement with Greece over a new bail-out package, accusing Athens of destroying their trust. It leaves the future of the eurozone in tatters only 15 years after its inception.

In a weekend billed as Europe’s last chance to save the monetary union, finance ministers will now reconvene on Saturday morning ahead of an EU leaders’ summit later in the evening, to thrash out an agreement or decide to eject Greece from the eurozone. Should no deal be forthcoming, the German government has made preparations to negotiate a temporary five-year euro exit, providing Greece with humanitarian aid and assistance while it makes the transition. Evacuations as Mexico’s ‘Volcano of Fire’ eruptsPosted: 11 Jul 2015 04:57 PM PDT

Ash rained down from the so-called “Volcano of Fire” in western Mexico and people living in its shadow were evacuated Saturday after it spectacularly erupted. The interior ministry said the volcano in Colima state could continue to spew lava before waning in a few weeks — or possibly experience its biggest eruption in more than a century.

More than 80 people were evacuated from nearby communities after the volcano sent a four-kilometer (2.5-mile) column of ash skyward late Friday. Ash and lava continued to flow out the crater on Saturday. One village at the foot of the mountain, Yerbabuena, was smothered in up to five centimeters (nearly two inches) of ash, authorities said, and rain also tumbled down, adding to the misery.

Ash traveled as far as the city of Colima, where residents wore masks as a thin layer of talc-like material covered streets and cars. “This is the strongest activity since 2005,” civil protection official Luis Felipe Puente told local radio. FULL REPORT

Dozens of Russian troops ‘flee unit, fearing Ukraine deployment’Posted: 11 Jul 2015 04:52 PM PDT

Dozens of Russian soldiers are facing trial for fleeing their unit, fearing deployment to Ukraine, a news site and a lawyer for five of the men said Saturday. The popular Gazeta.ru website said several dozen soldiers would be prosecuted after fleeing a training ground in southern Russia where they were under pressure to “volunteer” to fight in Ukraine. The troops had freely enlisted for the army and are not draftees, it said.

It is the latest report to allege Russian soldiers are being sent to eastern Ukraine despite Moscow’s insistence that only “volunteers” are fighting alongside the pro-Russian separatists. The defence ministry said that only four soldiers named in the report are under investigation for “disciplinary offences”, denying dozens were involved, the Echo of Moscow radio station reported. 10 Very Strange Things That Have Happened In Just The Past Few Weeks

Posted: 11 Jul 2015 08:29 AM PDT

Have you noticed that events have begun to accelerate? Over the past few weeks, things have officially started to get very weird. Chinese stocks are crashing, the Greek debt crisis is spiraling out of control, the New York Stock Exchange was down for about four hours on Wednesday thanks to a “technical glitch”, and global politicians have been acting very strangely.

After several years of relative calm, could it be possible that the second half of 2015 will usher in a time of chaos and confusion on a worldwide scale? Personally, I have never been more concerned about a period of time as I am about the last six months of 2015. And if I am right, what we have seen so far is just the tip of the iceberg. The following are 10 very strange things that have happened in just the past few weeks… FULL STORY

Walmart to ‘melt’ class rings bearing Confederate flag rather than complete orders

Posted: 11 Jul 2015 08:20 AM PDT

An Arkansas woman who went to pick up the class ring she ordered from Walmart left disappointed, after store officials told her the retailer’s new policy barred them from turning the item over — because it bore an image of the Confederate flag. Elaine Glidewell told KFSM someone from the store in Fort Smith called her to pick up the ring she’d ordered for her nephew, but when she arrived on Tuesday, a clerk told her she couldn’t have it. The ring had been ordered before Walmart stopped selling items bearing images of the flag, in the wake of controversy that stemmed from a racially-charged shooting in South Carolina.

“I wanted to cry,” Glidewell told KFSM, adding that the store clerk said the ring would be “melted.” Glidewell said she paid $320 for the ring and was going to present it to her nephew, who recently graduated. He had expressed interest in a design that bore a Rebel mascot that incorporates the Confederate battle flag. She got her money back, but no ring. FULL REPORT

Churches Are About To Face A Nightmare Gay Wedding Scenario That Could Doom ManyPosted: 11 Jul 2015 08:15 AM PDT

With the Supreme Court’s ruling that same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states, churches are now facing a potential nightmare as same-sex couples search for venues in which to hold their wedding ceremonies. While as of yet there are no meaningful judicial precedents that would allow the government to force churches to perform or recognize same-sex marriages, National Review warns lawsuits are just around the corner.

Former owners of Oregon bakery Sweetcakes By Melissa, Aaron and Melissa Klein, were recently ordered to pay a $135,000 fine after they declined to bake a wedding cake for a lesbian couple. Inevitably, lawsuits against churches will follow. FULL REPORT

More Than 50 Earthquakes Hit California Town in One DayPosted: 11 Jul 2015 08:08 AM PDT

A swarm of small earthquakes struck the Southern California city of Fillmore Wednesday, according to a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, prompting concerns that they could signal the arrival of a larger quake sooner or later. The quakes began around 3:00 AM with a 1.4 magnitude tremor, according to the Southern California Earthquake Data Center at the California Institute of Technology. The largest registered a magnitude of 2.7, while most of the several dozen quakes fell below 2.0, meaning that many of them were likely too light to be felt.

The strongest of this week’s quakes was felt largely in a rural area, the USGS noted, just outside Fillmore and about 6 miles west of Santa Paula, California. Dr. Lucy Jones, a seismologist with USGS, said on Twitter that while all earthquakes make another subsequent quake more likely, there’s no way to predict whether this week’s temblors mean a larger quake is coming or not. European Leaders Promise The Greek Debt Crisis Will Be Resolved One Way Or Another On Sunday

Posted: 10 Jul 2015 06:13 PM PDT

The wait will soon be over. Greece submitted a final compromise plan to its eurozone creditors on Thursday, European finance ministers will meet on Saturday to discuss the proposal, and an emergency summit of all 28 EU nations on Sunday will make a final decision on what to do. The summit on Sunday is being billed as a “final deadline” and a “last chance” by EU officials. In essence, Greece is being given one more opportunity to embrace the austerity measures that are being demanded of them by their creditors. So has Greece gone far enough with this new proposal? We shall find out on Sunday.

For months, the entire planet has been following this seemingly endless Greek debt saga. Global financial markets have gyrated with every twist and turn of this ongoing drama, and many people have wondered if it would ever come to an end. But now European leaders are promising us that the uncertainty is finally going to be over this weekend…FULL REPORT

US leaving Israel in the dark on Iran talks

The American negotiating team at the Iran nuclear talks in Vienna has not updated Israel on developments in the talks in nearly two weeks, Israeli and American officials acknowledged Tuesday. The officials did not agree on the reasons for the failure, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported. In a briefing to reporters in Vienna, senior American officials said that Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman,

who has led the Iran talks for the US, tried to contact Israel’s National Security Adviser Yossi Cohen three times over the past ten days, but scheduling conflicts prevented the calls from going through. A senior official in Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that the last update from Sherman took place 12 days ago, but insisted, “we have not declined any offers for further updates.” FULL REPORT

One In Ten British People Support ISISPosted: 10 Jul 2015 05:48 PM PDT

In shocking findings published by The Mirror newspaper, an ICM poll has revealed that one in ten people in Britain regard themselves as supporters of the Islamic State terror group. The findings indicate that, despite continued atrocities and horrific executions, support for ISIS in the UK has grown from seven per cent to nine per cent since last year. Three percent of British people alarmingly declared that they had a “very favourable view” of ISIS, a rise of two percent on last year. This indicates that up to half of the three million Muslims living in Britain could be ISIS supporters or sympathizers.

Another 6 percent astoundingly registered a “somewhat favorable” view of ISIS, again an increase on last year’s findings. While support seems to be on the rise, opposition has strengthened, with 80 percent registering a “very un-favorable” view of ISIS, a rise from 45 percent last year. Detroit-area cancer doctor gets 45 years in prison for fraud, Poisons Over 500Posted: 10 Jul 2015 05:38 PM PDT

Calling the scheme “horrific,” a judge sentenced a Detroit-area cancer doctor to 45 years in prison Friday for collecting millions from insurance companies while poisoning more than 500 patients through needless treatments that wrecked their health. U.S. District Judge Paul Borman this week heard stories of brittle bones and fried organs as patients chillingly described the effects of excessive chemotherapy at the hands of Dr. Farid Fata.

Fata “shut down whatever compassion he had as a doctor and switched it to making money,” Borman said. Moments earlier, the judge called it a “huge, horrific series of criminal acts.” Fata, 50, offered no excuses before getting his punishment. Stone-faced all week in court, he repeatedly broke down in loud sobs as he begged for mercy Friday. FULL REPORT

Muslim Civil War ready to erupt in Iraq

Posted: 10 Jul 2015 05:32 PM PDT

Iranian-backed Shia militias are preparing to launch an operation to retake Fallujah, a Sunni-dominated city in Iraq, from the Islamic State terror group, Loveday Morris of the Washington Post reports. And it looks like it’s going to get messy. While Fallujah’s proximity to Baghdad, Iraq’s capital, makes it strategically important for the Iraqi government, sending in militias that have been known to burn down Sunni villages might not pay off in the long run.

Eissa al-Issawi, the head of Fallujah’s local council, told the Post that if the Shia militias are allowed to lead the charge to retake the city from Islamic State (aka ISIS, ISIL, Daesh), “there would be much destruction, and much blood.” US Marines fought the bloodiest battle of the Iraq war in Fallujah in 2004. “Then fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor, the group known as al-Qaeda in Iraq, Marines fought street to street, contending with sniper fire, roadside bombs and booby-trapped buildings,” Morris notes. Dems declare war on words “husband,” “wife”

The Washington Examiner reports:

More than two dozen Democrats have proposed legislation that would eliminate the words “husband” and “wife” from federal law.

Those “gendered terms” would be replaced by “gender-neutral” words like “spouse” or “married couple,” according to the bill from Rep. Lois Capps, D-Calif.

“The Amend the Code for Marriage Equality Act recognizes that the words in our laws have meaning and can continue to reflect prejudice and discrimination even when rendered null by our highest courts,” Capps said. “Our values as a country are reflected in our laws. I authored this bill because it is imperative that our federal code reflect the equality of all marriages.”

Nike Removes Red, White And Blue From U.S. Women’s 2015 World Cup Champions Uniforms

NIKE ERASED RED, WHITE, AND BLUE FROM U.S. WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM

EDITOR’S NOTE: Nike’s decision to dress the US Women’s Team in non-red, white and blue is indicative of the unpatriotic sentiment that has slithered across America since 2008. Patriotism in no longer cool in a post-American society led by a post-American president.

Although USA fans in Vancouver dressed themselves in red, white, and blue, the U.S. Women 2015 World Cup Champions conspicuously did not. The team did, however, wear their black, white, neon green, and yellow—Nike colors.

New York Post columnist Phil Mushnick asserts that the corporate take over of the uniforms by Nike, the enabling by Fox for not denouncing the team’s wardrobe, and the diminution of national pride, reminds him of the message in one of Charlie Chaplin’s most iconic silent movies.

nike-removes-red-white-blue-from-2015-womens-world-cup-2015-soccer-team

Whatever happened to patriotism?

Mushnick writes that the “intentionally silent” 1936 movie  Modern Times “celebrates progress as relentless while condemning it as soulless. Its ostensible ‘beneficiaries’—people—are run through, ground up and spit out by the toothy wheels of progress.”

Its seems impossible to Mushnick that America could have lost its way so drastically since the 1992 Olympic Dream Team in Barcelona. There, the players wore the red, white, and blue uniforms and draped themselves in the flag, making sure to cover any Reebok logos as they accepted their gold medals.

Sports writer Jack McCallum referred to them as a “red, white, and blue dream.”

But Nike has a special way of calling the shots, claims Mushnick: “Nike shoves it in everyone’s face: ‘Look! We can make the Blue Devils and Scarlet Knights wear black. We can mess with nations’ colors, force national teams to wear colors we’re selling. Red, white and blue? Don’t be a sap!’”

Mushnick Blames Fox as much as Nike for the uniform betrayal, writing: “Despite what was painfully and curiously obvious to everyone over the U.S. team’s last two games, FOX and its battalion of commentators chose to play stupid and play us for stupid. Not a peep as to why the team that appeared in weeks of FOX graphics as red, white and blue betrayed the nation’s colors?” source

Pope Francis Issues A Fiery Call For New Economic World Order

In Fiery Speeches, Pope Francis Excoriates Global Capitalism

“Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.” Revelation 18:10 (KJV)

EDITOR’S NOTE: Pope Francis, having laid the groundwork over the past two years, has begun his ascent to obtaining raw political power. Francis is going to create a One World Church powered by the Revived Roman Empire, then he is going to combine the two. Just you watch and see…

ASUNCIÓN, Paraguay — His speeches can blend biblical fury with apocalyptic doom. Pope Francis does not just criticize the excesses of global capitalism. He compares them to the “dung of the devil.” He does not simply argue that systemic “greed for money” is a bad thing. He calls it a “subtle dictatorship” that “condemns and enslaves men and women.”

pope-francis-calls-for-new-global-economic-order-false-prophet-revelation-capitalism

Having returned to his native Latin America, Francis has renewed his left-leaning critiques on the inequalities of capitalism, describing it as an underlying cause of global injustice, and a prime cause of climate change. Francis escalated that line last week when he made a historic apology for the crimes of the Roman Catholic Church during the period of Spanish colonialism — even as he called for a global movement against a “new colonialism” rooted in an inequitable economic order.

The Argentine pope seemed to be asking for a social revolution.

This is not theology as usual; this is him shouting from the mountaintop,” said Stephen F. Schneck, the director of the Institute for Policy Research and Catholic studies at Catholic University of America in Washington. source

China Shows The World How To Deal With Muslim Jihadis Who Want To Join ISIS

More than 100 Chinese Muslim Uighurs have been deported from Thailand

EDITOR’S NOTE: In stark contrast to Barack Obama’s call to defeat ISIS by coming up with “better ideas“, China does things a little bit differently. The Chinese Muslim terrorists were deported, placed in shackles with a hood over their heads, and lead away to an “undisclosed location”. This is how your safeguard your country and defeat the Muslim terrorists of ISIS.

The Chinese government claims more than 100 minority Muslim Uighurs who were sent back from Thailand to China after fleeing the country were on their way to wage jihad in the Middle East. The 109 ‘illegal immigrants’ had been on their way ‘to join jihad’ in Turkey, Syria or Iraq, and 13 of them had fled China after being implicated in terrorist activities, it was reported.

More than 100 Uighurs accused of attempting to make their way to the Middle East to wage jihad are pictured shackled and hooded as they are sent back to China

Images broadcast on Chinese television showed the suspects sat hooded and bound as they were flown back to an undisclosed location in China. The Uighurs, a Turkic-speaking Muslim minority in China’s far western region of Xinjiang, have complained of harsh cultural and religious suppression under Chinese rule.

China’s official Xinhua News Agency said a Chinese police investigation had uncovered several gangs recruiting people for jihad. The Uighurs were detained in Thailand more than a year ago, but claimed to be Turkish.

A group of 173 were sent to Turkey after Thai authorities said they determined they were indeed Turkish, but the remaining 109 were found to be Chinese, according to Thai deputy government spokesman Major General Verachon Sukhonthapatipak.

Another eight arrived from Thailand to Turkey on Saturday and 52 remaining Uighurs would be sent back to their country once their nationalities were verified, Verachon said Saturday.

Xinhua News Agency said many of the 109 Uighurs had been radicalized by materials sent by the exiled World Uyghur Congress, a Germany-based rights group for the ethnic minority, and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, designated by China as a terrorist organization. source

What is The Gospel?

“My Last Day” — the Jesus Anime

9 powerful minutes of animation that begins with a thief behind bars watching the scourging of Jesus, and it ends with the thief dying next to Jesus, and waking to see Him in a beautiful place.

The dying thief: What was so great about his faith?

There are many acts of extraordinary faith in the Bible. The one that has impressed me the most concerns the dying thief on the cross. We could take the approach that he had nothing to lose, so he decided to cast his lot with Jesus. But this makes absolutely no sense of the text and the context.
In this conversion we have a specific fulfillment of Christ’s first words on the cross. No sooner had Christ spoken the words, “Father, forgive them,” had the Father answered that prayer by turning a once-reviling criminal into a Christ-glorifying saint. While the soon-to-be converted criminal was not directly responsible for Christ’s death, he nevertheless joined with those who were and was thus indirectly addressed when Christ asked for God to forgive “them.”
Christ, the sinless one, was numbered with or counted among the transgressors (Isa. 53:12; Luke 22:37), all of whom have a bigger problem than the day-to-day sins they commit. They hate Christ, the God-man. Anyone who has a master other than the Lord Jesus hates him (Lk. 16:13; Gal. 4:8). That these two criminals loathed him is clearly manifested during the crucifixion: “And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way” (Matt. 27:44).
When the criminal who was converted was doing his worst against Christ, Christ was doing his best for this criminal.
The conversion of the one criminal was most extraordinary and testifies to the power of Christ’s prayer and the grace of God. Why?
This criminal’s faith did not come at a time such as when Christ turned water into wine; or performed miracles, such as walking on water, opening the eyes of a blind man, or raising Lazarus from the dead. No! The criminal believed on the Messiah while he was hanging as one cursed upon a tree. The criminal trusted in and boldly defended the one whose disciples had abandoned him. Jesus was at his lowest when this criminal asked to be remembered in Christ’s kingdom.
When he was on the cross, did anyone publicly cry out, as John the Baptist did, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (Jn. 1:29)? But this is essentially what the dying thief did. Little wonder, then, that Christ should promise him a place in his kingdom: “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Lk. 23:43).
The criminal acknowledged he was guilty; he acknowledged that Christ was not (“this man has done nothing wrong”); he feared God; but, and here is the key: the criminal did not merely want to be in a better place. He wanted to be with Christ in a better place: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom” (Lk. 23:42). The criminal believed “against all hope”.
Heaven is a better place because that is where Christ is. Everyone wants to go to heaven, but not everyone wants to go to Christ’s heaven. Not so with this criminal: he saw, with his eyes, Christ at his worst; but with the eyes of faith, he believed that Christ would soon be at his best, and so put his faith in a dying king.
Christ is always – always! – willing to save even the most miserable of sinners. A recognition of guilt (Lk. 23:40) and a confidence in him and not ourselves (Lk. 23:42) will always lead to the most assuring truth a sinner can receive: the Savior welcomes such into his paradise!
“One is saved, and we may not despair; the other is lost, and we may not presume.” Spurgeon

9 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Have a Seeker-Friendly Children’s Ministry

Children are taught to be good, not godly. Repentance leading to salvation leading to discipleship will cause children to transform their lives to meet the “good” criteria of the Gospel. The inward change influences the outward acts. If we teach children to be good without that inward transformation, they learn that all they have to do is be good to go to Heaven. But they will never be good enough.

“Milne’s trial on April 20th, 1558, was conducted in the St. Andrews cathedral. According to contemporary accounts, his legs were too weak to carry him unaided up the stairs into the pulpit to answer the charges brought against him. His voice, however, rang out loud and clear throughout the sanctuary.”

Book Review – The Christian Life

“Anyone who is familiar with Ferguson knows that he is able to take complex topics and make them accessible without compromising. In particular, he is able to take the concept from the “classroom” to the “pavement” by teaching how it applies. I really appreciate this about the author.”

When J. I. Packer Walked Out

“My primary authority,” wrote Packer, “is a Bible writer named Paul. For many decades now, I have asked myself at every turn of my theological road: Would Paul be with me in this? What would he say if he were in my shoes? I have never dared to offer a view on anything that I did not have good reason to think he would endorse.”

3 Errors of Musical Style that Stifle Community

It is ironic that music, an element meant to draw Christians together in mutual love and service (see Colossians 3:16) has become a force for significant division within the church. It just goes to show, I guess, that we can make a mess of pretty much anything. In their book The Compelling Community, Mark Dever and Jamie Dunlop point out 3 common errors of musical style can stifle local church community:

The Cell Church

Over twenty years ago Sarah Leslie of Discernment Ministries began doing research on the early stages of the New Apostolic Reformation which was being launched by  C. Peter Wagner. In her research she covered what she refers to as the networking hierarchical cell church structure.  In this piece she tells us exactly what this all means.  This is not the […]

Church Visitors Versus Church Members

There is a lot of fuzzy thinking found amongst Christians concerning sinners and the church. We hear so often things like: “Our church welcomes everyone” or “No one is excluded from our church” or “Jesus accepts everyone and so do we”.

As with so many Christian clichés, there is an element of truth found here, but also some real biblical and theological error. Thus we need to tease all this out in much more detail to get the biblical balance which is required here. Otherwise we can end up with some real serious problems.

The true bit about this way of thinking is this: of course anyone is – or should be – welcome to come to church and to hear the gospel being preached. The doors of the church should be wide open in this sense. We do not exclude anyone from hearing biblical truth and the claims of the gospel. The gospel, after all, is for sinners.

Traveler Z 14

Traveler Z 14

But this is not always what these folks have in mind. They want to take this further and say that unregenerate sinners can not only come and hear sermons in our churches, but can become fully involved in the life and fellowship of the church as well.

The reason they can think this way is because perhaps most churches today have long ago abandoned any notion of church membership – and along with it, church discipline. Thus the physical doors are just as wide open as are the theological doors.

One of the main hallmarks of a biblical church has been lost: a place where the redeemed gather to worship and glorify God. While churches have always done two seemingly conflicting things at once (proclaim the saving gospel to lost sinners as well at train and build up saved members), this distinction is now often lost in many churches.

How to Respond to the Rising Tide of Anti-Christian Hatred

Again, this is only a tiny sampling of what I’ve actually seen, which represents a tiny sampling of hateful comments that I haven’t seen, but the overall theme is undeniably clear: If you do not affirm homosexual “marriage,” homosexual relationships, and even homosexuality itself, you are a hate-filled, despicable, uneducated bigot, with the emphasis on that last word, bigot.

How then do we respond?

Everyone from the Pope, to the President of the United States, to the United Nations, to many Evangelical Christian leaders, have been calling for world unity and peace.  And while the words “unity” and “peace” are appealing, one must look behind the scenes and ask just what would that “unity and peace” look like?  And […]

W4YW: Pastors after Affairs, the Death of Reading, & Preaching on Deaf Ears

Wisdom For Your Weekend: your weekly installment of things we’ve been reading (and watching) around the web.

Video of the Week

God Does Not Need You, John Piper. One of the ironies of the Christian life is that truly generous living comes from seeing how little God needs our help. You can drum up donations by making it seem like God is short on cash. But God tells us that he’s the big giver. And that inspires open hands (and open hearts) like nothing else can.

https://player.vimeo.com/video/127388478

Articles of the Week

Should Pastors Be Restored to Ministry after an Affair? Phil Monroe. We wish questions like this were more academic and less immediately relevant. But, sadly, it seems that one of the constants in a sin-stained world is seeing gifted pastors failing to honor their marriage covenant—and subsequently having to leave the ministry. Monroe asks (and answers) a common and important question: can pastors ever re-enter the ministry after an affair?

You Won’t Believe What Shocking Thing He Said about Christian Clickbait, Aaron Earls. Eventually we’ll stop harping on the refuse that is clickbait. But until we Christians can learn to stop feeding the Buzzfeed troll, perhaps a few warnings like Earls’ are in order. So what’s so bad about clickbait? And how can I tell the difference between clickbait and, say, a catchy headline?

14 Reasons People Don’t Listen to Preaching, Chuck Lawless. If you’re a preacher, this article title no doubt makes you squirm. You’d rather not think that people aren’t listening to your preaching. But, of course, many of them aren’t. The reasons behind this, though, may not always be hardness of heart. Lawless identifies some of the most common reasons your message isn’t getting past those two little instruments of auditory wonder.

Our Culture of Reading and the End of Dialogue, Matthew Lee Anderson. What’s wrong with American society today? Ask 100 people, and you’re likely to get 95 answers (just being honest…there has to be some overlap). Anderson points to one such tear in our societal fabric—the slow death of reading. When a society reads well, it thinks well, learns quickly, and argues with civility. When it doesn’t? Well, let’s just hope that we Christians can re-learn what it means to be a people “of the book.”

This ‘n’ That

  • Baylor University changed the language in the its sexual misconduct policy because they “didn’t believe the language reflected the university’s caring community.” Stand by, because Baylor will be the first of many “Christian” colleges that will compromise in this way. So let me get this straight: we are surprised and upset that one false teacher invited another false teacher to speak at his not-remotely-Christian church? Okay.
  • And while we’re talking about Ed Young, I like to throw this out every now and then to remind everyone why we cannot consider Young to be a pastor in any biblical sense of the term.
  • Sigh. Nowadays, “bullying” is essentially hurting someone’s feelings because you disagree with them. Oh well. Stand strong and confident in Christ, Christian!

A Personal Note on Gay Marriage

How Should Christians Respond to Cultural Decline?

In the great battle that is the culture war Christians are in rapid and chaotic retreat. On issues of sexuality we are deemed backward, hateful, and hypocritical. To speak in defense of marriage is, in the minds of the world, on par at best with denying the holocaust, at worst to perpetrating it. We have not just lost our place at the table, but in the building. We are on the outside looking in.

First, accept it. I’m not suggesting surrender mind you. I am, however, suggesting that denying the obvious helps no one. Sure Fox wallops MSNBC. Of course abortion mills are shutting down. But the cultural ethos is still hostile to us, and it’s only going to get worse. I fear that too often our fear is losing privilege, that we fight our rearguard action to protect wood, hay, and stubble. The reputations we too often seek to defend are our own, rather than our Lord’s.

Second, embrace it. The church historically has made its greatest gains when it was under the most pressure. Heat removes dross and we have far more dross than we ought in the body. To be purified, to be chastened by our Lord, is the very mark of what it means to be a child of God. Paul reminds us in I Corinthians 1 that it is God’s holy habit to use the weak and the despised to show forth His strength. Pounding our chests, building our strategic alliances simply encourages the One True Power to abandon us to our own devices. When we are weak, He is strong.

Third, give thanks for it. We are, of course, called to battle, to tear down strongholds, and every lofty thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of Christ. But even our losses are victories. So He tells us in the Sermon on the Mount, reminding us that we are blessed when we are persecuted for His name’s sake. His blessing is the victory. What a privilege to share in His shame. It’s how we come to share in His exaltation.

Fourth, pray for our enemies. For for them, every victory is a loss. The deeper the culture falls into sin the more misery it faces. Bruce Jenner, when he receives the Arthur Ashe award for courage from ESPN will be deeper in despair than he was when he first saw lying surgery as the solution to his ills. Those who have been given over to their own dark desires may march in the streets to demonstrate their pride, when the truth is they are consumed by shame. Pity, rather than hatred, ought to be what motivates our prophetic call to repentance.

Finally, pray for each other. The deepest danger of cultural decline isn’t the self-destruction of goats who love death but the temptations that come to the sheep. Our children are being raised in a world without the blessing of social taboo, in a culture that has lost the ability to blush. And we face the temptation to walk the wide path of destruction, protecting our standing by betraying Him. Jesus prayed for Peter. Let us pray for one another.

Jesus is on His throne, bringing His purposes to pass. And we are seated with Him in the heavenly places. We are kings and queens dressed in beggars’ clothes. May we have the eyes of faith to see it.

The Daily Discovery (July 11-12, 2015)

Dear Oregon, Thank You For Protecting Us From The Scary Christians Bakers – “I mean, can you imagine what would happen if we didn’t have liberals around to protect us from the scary Christians with their challenging beliefs and strange moral convictions? Can you imagine the anarchy, death, and destruction that would surely unfurl across the land if Christian business owners had free speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of association rights? Can you possibly even conceive of the chaos that would plague this great country if homosexuals were forced to, I don’t know, go somewhere else for their baked goods?”

Evangelism Explosion – “Many people are not aware that Dr. Kennedy founded an evangelistic association called Evangelism Explosion. One of his chief burdens was to equip Christians to be bolder in their faith by training them in how to engage in more effective witnessing. Of course, AiG does the same thing: equipping Christians to answer the questions of the day that are keeping non-Christians from considering the Christian faith.”

Oregon allowing 15-year-olds to get state-subsidized sex-change operations – “Liberals who control the state of Oregon have gone completely mad. The tax-payers will now have to foot the bill for sex-change operations for 15-year olds! According to Dan Springer of Fox News, there was no public debate on this decision. He says the policy was changed ‘to include cross-sex hormone therapy, puberty-suppressing drugs and gender-reassignment surgery as covered treatments for people with gender dysphoria, formally known as gender identity disorder.’ Since I make my home in Oregon, this decision is particularly disturbing for me.”

Religions Are Not All Basically the Same – “Historian Rodney Stark explains why the theology of God in different religions produces very different religions. All religions cannot basically be the same because their gods are not the same; some religions don’t even have a deity. The kind of god one believes in determines whether or not morality is part of the religion (some religions have no moral guidelines) and whether or not we are meant to have relationship with the deity. Some gods, as conceived by various religions, just are not capable of being moral or having a relationship with human beings.”

Respectable Elders – “We’ve recently witnessed some changes in the cultural landscape that understandably cause believers great concern. Is society turning its back on the church? Is this the beginning of a new era of persecution and political pressure for the church? And how should we respond to a world that is increasingly hostile to God’s Word and His people?”

Jesus Vomits: State of the Church 2015, part 1

Four years ago I assessed the State of the American Church in a multi-part series, writing from my own perspective in my own opinion based on Bible prophesies and warnings. (The links are on the right sidebar, scroll down.) The major themes and issues I wrote about in 2011 were–

  • Love among believers growing cold, something we’re prophetically warned about,
  • Failure to tend our anchor and look at the lighthouse, this translates to too many Christians not believing in the sufficiency of the word, something Hebrews imperatively warns us about,
  • Not having a biblical worldview, something the entire Bible repeatedly warns us about,
  • Believers including pastors who filled the vacuum of their non-biblical world view with a sinful attractional model, capturing goats instead of sheep, making church a carnal carnival, something Spurgeon predicted,
  • Carnality allowing the rise of spiritual abuse, something Jesus condemned in the Pharisees
  • The American church is increasingly not a safe place spiritually, something Peter prophesied.

How is the American church doing now, four years later?

The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, 1830, Wikipedia

So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of My mouth.  (Revelation 3:16 HCSB)

Four years are not a long time in an adult’s life. But in the church’s life, these past four years have been like dog years. According to this canine aging scale, a large scale dog’s age compared to a 4 year old human would be 34 years old now since I wrote the last State of the Church essay.

It has been a whirlwind of satanic activity and visible decline since the last time I’ve had an opportunity to prayerfully discern the State of the Church.

The Spirit has grabbed hold of me and is pressing me weightily. A few days ago I’d written two essays, here, and here, about the importance of memorizing scripture because persecution was coming to America and access to religious materials will be restricted. There will be suffering. I am not making a prophetic proclamation derived from direct revelation, I am stating what the scriptures say. (John 16:33, 1 Peter 1:6, 1 Peter 4:7, 1 Peter 4:12, & etc.)

We must memorize scripture and take the word seriously because the day is coming where oppression and persecution in America against Christians will play itself out in real ways. But the memorizing scripture is only the tip of the iceberg of the message I’m burdened to convey. Here is the rest. I’m saying it all at once because it is the time. It’s long I’ll break it up into several essays as I did the original State of the Church essay.

My heart’s desire is to equip the saints in the word and spark them to Godly action and holy living. I know that is yours too. We all come at it from different angles because we have different gifts. But every Christian has a mandate to boldly proclaim. And teachers are held to even higher standards.

THE BATTLE HAS NOW COME TO US

One of the things that I have observed in spiritual warfare is that events mount up, and there comes a tipping point. After the tipping point is reached, the events toward a particular path accelerate exponentially with rapidly reaching its inevitable outcome. This is of course usually the case in secular events. In spiritual events, especially prophecy, it seems that the set-up takes a long time but then it is fulfilled rapidly. The tipping point dramatically tips.
A time will come when instead of shepherds feeding the sheep, the church will have clowns entertaining the goats. CH Spurgeon

The particular path we’re on that’s accelerating so dramatically ends in the Tribulation with the saints overcome. June 26 and the Supreme Court’s decision was a major touchstone in the earthly battle for the soul of the church. Most mature Christians understand this.

Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, (Rev 13:7).

That’s where it’s all headed. The church won’t be overcome, the Revelation verse is another proof why the rapture will happen prior to the Tribulation because Jesus promised not to have the gates of hell prevail against His church. (Matthew 16:18) If the church hadn’t been raptured out prior to the Tribulation then the Matthew verse would be a lie. And God cannot lie. But suffice to say, the prophetic path that is laid out for us is near-obliteration of all saints from the earth.

Now, June 26 was a watershed moment in the church in America. This is easily seen and understood. What is not so well known or understood are the following things:

SATAN’S RELENTLESS HATRED

The relentless aggression and hatred satan and his minions have for Christ’s people and His church is something 99.9% of the American saints have no REAL clue as to the depth and evilness of. Oh, people intellectually acknowledge satan’s hatred, saying, “Sure, Jesus said trouble will come…” but they don’t believe it deep down. This is partly because satan’s hatred of us has been masked and suppressed all these decades and centuries since the first hard persecutions of antiquity, seen bubbling up for a while in the Catholic Church persecution of the true saints in the Middle Ages and once again briefly in the Holocaust, and today in ISIS for example, doing what they are doing to people now in the Middle East. Meanwhile America has been enjoying a First Great Awakening, a Second Great Awakening, a Third Great Awakening, and according to the false prophets, another one is just on the horizon. Less discerning Christians have bought into that lie. In addition, each ‘awakening’ was less biblical than the last. Some consider that the “Jesus Movement” of the 1960-1980 era was a Fourth Awakening. These movements have lulled us. Why would we need to be awakened if we were consistently and properly zealous for the House of God in the first place?

Satan’s visible hatred for the church in America certainly has not been seen in visible ways as it has elsewhere. It’s mostly been hidden and underground, seen in the increase in false teachers, in accepted heresies, in tolerating sin. In America, we have not had physical persecution or limited-to-no access to Christian materials, and we have always had a voice in the public forum thanks to the Constitutional right of religious liberty. A Joel Osteen doesn’t seem like judgment to us as much as putting Christians in a cage and drowning them. Therefore we have tended to believe either satan’s hatred of Jesus’ church isn’t as bad as we think or it won’t happen here.

The biggest problem facing the church is lack of discernment. If you can’t discern the truth you can die of a thousand heresies. – John MacArthur.
Paul saw this hatred in Galatians. He was astounded at the ease with which the false group had come in and polluted the Galatian church. He said that in Galatians 1:6- “I am astonished that you are so quickly…” the Greek word the Spirit used in Paul for ‘astonished’ is thaumazó, wonder at, be amazed (marvel), i.e. awestruck, “wondering very greatly,” astonished out of one’s senses;.

You get that feeling of Paul’s tone in the book. The tone is fervent, long sentences a bit jumbled and hurried, wanting badly to get the words out. Paul was astonished out of his senses. (“See what large letters I am writing with my own hand…”)

Note: I’m not talking about satan being more powerful than Jesus. He isn’t. I’m talking about Christians who don’t comprehend the depth of satan’s darkness and weaken themselves with lax battle preparation. You know how John 1:4-5 says in the KJV

“In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”

Well we “lights” don’t comprehend the darkness as deeply as we should. Add to that we are weak in battle because we don’t access the power that is given to us. More on that next.

Satan is like a Godzilla rampage, trampling city after city, stepping on puny humans and leaving carnage behind. That is the battle. It isn’t cozy and it isn’t clean. Satan fights dirty and he has massive power. For Pete’s sake he is god of the earth! (2 Corinthians 4:4). And here are the foolish American Charismatics marching up and down streets in prayer walks, thinking that they are binding satan with their stupid words, and deliverance ministers casting out satan with their tiny actions. It is not so!!

Most Christians in America have a wrong perception at the back of their minds, that somehow we’re saf(er) here in the US. That because our nation was founded on biblical principles, somehow we won’t get the brunt of what is coming. They think, ‘We’re in the Bible belt…” or ‘We’re protected by religious freedom…’ or simply ‘It won’t happen here.’

Well it will. It has started.

Stay tuned for part 2

How America exchanged free speech and debate for mob rule

Gay activist vandalizes pro-marriage sign Gay activist vandalizes pro-marriage sign

I posted this article from The Federalist on Facebook and was surprised by the response. It’s about how the secular left managed to shut down debate by replacing rational thought and disagreement with the practice of using power to silence people who disagree with them.

The article is long, and very very good. I will try to snip enough of it here to convince you to read it. The thesis is that the secular left is trying to push their views on the masses, and succeeding, but not through rational discourse.

How are they doing pushing their agenda, then?

A lot of Americans watched in shock while cultish mobs suddenly attacked the RFRA that Pence initially defended. But the groundwork for mass hysteria like this was stealthily laid for decades, and the minefields sown.

Christian media report on Driscoll’s unwanted comeback

Christian Today reports,

Mark Driscoll’s return to high-profile ministry continues with string of public appearances

Former Mars Hill pastor Mark Driscoll was interviewed by Hillsong senior pastor Brian Houston.

The return of controversial pastor Mark Driscoll to high-profile ministry is continuing with appearances at churches and conferences in the US and abroad.

Driscoll’s giant Mars Hill church in Seattle imploded last year after a string of revelations about his leadership style and questionable practices used to market his books. He has faced allegations of bullying and misogyny, and calls for him to withdraw from ministry for a period.

However, he has posted details on his website of appearances at churches in Texas and Alaska, and at the Men Coaching Men Discipleship Ministry Leadership Conference in Arizona.

Also on his website is a reference to his appearance, with his wife Grace, in a video interview at the Hillsong Europe conference in…
