Joy in the midst of suffering and confusion

Possessing the Treasure

by Mike Ratliff

(Matthew 10:28 NA28)

28 And do not be afraid of those killing the body, but are unable to kill the soul, but fear instead the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matthew 10:28 translated from the NA28 Greek text)

In this post we will look at Matthew 10:16-33 which is part of our Lord’s instructions to His disciples as He prepared them for what was coming when they were eventually sent on their worldwide mission to the Gentiles. They had to understand that persecution would inevitably accompany their mission wherever God sent them.

Fundamentalism: The Development of a Movement

thinkGOSPEL blog

Fundamentalism maze concept

Very often when my children ask me for something that they know they aren’t likely to get, I will try to lighten the moment by asking them, “Do you want the short answer or the long answer?” The short answer, of course, is “no.” The long answer explains why.

For many within the fundamentalist movement the question “Are you a fundamentalist?” needs the long answer. The reason for this is that fundamentalism is a nuanced web of historical, theological, and political complexities. You could throw into that mix a few prominent personalities.

The last thirty years have seen significant change in fundamentalist circles. David Beale, historian at Bob Jones University, identifies this change as the “neo-fundamentalist defection into broad evangelicalism” which he says began about 1970. This defection has increased exponentially in the last ten years.

The last of the “fighting fundamentalist” leaders has gone on to glory and the movement…

Transhumanism: Humanity 2.0?

The Reformed Reader

It’s the theme of many movies and books: becoming more than human.  This is called transhumanism, the desire to become posthuman.  It’s also called humanity 2.0, mankind upgraded; this is biotechnology’s striving to mesh computers, brains, and DNA.  Think cyborgs, cryonics, and uploading a person’s “self” from his body to a computer.   Transhumanists want to give people a chance to develop or evolve beyond human limits.

Matthew Eppinette discusses this topic in his helpful essay, “Human 2.0: Transhumanism as a Cultural Trend” (inEveryday Theology).  Eppinette gives a good summary and theological critique of this movement, and in doing so, he nicely explains that scientific and technological advances are not the only reason for this rise of transhumanism.  What else explains this trend?

“Scientific developments have set only part of the stage for transhumanism; philosophical and cultural trends such as individualism and postmodernism also contribute.”

Individualism is the…

Daily Devotionals: (3rd Aug.) The False Promises of Sin. Pt. 2

thinkGOSPEL blog

Reading: Genesis 3:4-5

Continuing on from the previous part, we are still considering the destructive course that ensues by following the false promises of Satan. The first promise that Satan made to Eve was impunity: he said there are no consequences to sin.

The second promise was the promise of improvement: “Your eyes shall be opened” (verse 5). Notice the venom, the unfathomable deception, as Satan leads the infant humanity to the rim of the deadly precipice.  The promise was based on the idea that God does not want you to walk in darkness. He wants you to better yourself, to expand your education and experience of the world—to know “good and evil.”

Having removed the danger-sign, he replaces it with a sign reading “Play-Area.” “There is no danger here.” In fact, he says, “This is an exciting adventure you are about to experience.” Standing looking over the cliff…

Planned Parenthood president visited White House 39 times since 2009

WINTERY KNIGHT

Barack Obama and Planned Parenthood Barack Obama and Planned Parenthood

This story is from CNS News.

It says:

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, head of the taxpayer-subsidized abortion giant currently facing a firestorm for allegedly selling body parts harvested from aborted babies, has made personal visits to the White House 39 times since President Barack Obama took office in 2009, White House records show.

According to online records on the White House website, Richards first visited the White House on Jan. 20, 2009 — the same day Obama first took office. Since then, Richards has met with Obama alone at least three times and First Lady Michelle Obama at least twice. She also met with president and his wife together another four times.

[…]In 2014 alone, Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider, received $528.4 million in taxpayer funding, according to its 2014 annual financial report. That year, the organization performed 327,653 abortions.

And in return, Planned Parenthood gives a…

Our Very Present Help in Time of Trouble

Unfathomable Grace

The Psalmist encouraged his fellow worshipers to turn their eyes towards heaven with adoration and delight. Even though they could not see God, he was their friend. Yahweh was their refuge, their strength, their help, and their comforter.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come, behold the…

Planned Parenthood Videos – Is This a Wilberforce Moment for the Church?

THINKAPOLOGETICS.COM

Here is a great article. I should also note a good place to educate yourself about the topic is Scott Klusendorf’s The Case for Life: Equipping Christians to Engage the Culture.

LAEL ARRINGTON — Planned Parenthood supporters are leaning on Congress and the media to kill the story of what’s really going on inside America’s abortion trade. It reminds me of how England’s slave ship owners did not want the British people to see what went on inside the slave ships. We are living in Wilberforce times, no?

William Wilberforce was the British Member of Parliament who led the fight to abolish the slave trade. If you haven’t seenAmazing Grace, the 2006 movie about that struggle, now would be a good time. It is especially a good time to see the scene where Wilberforce has arranged for a pleasure cruise of British lords and ladies to…

Implication of Planned Parenthood President’s admission that Videos show “medical and scientific conversations”

The Domain for Truth

pp-undercover-video

Four days ago I posted my Response to Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards’ Washington Post’s Opinion Piece.  I want to revisit one of Cecile Richards’ quote again:

While predictably these videos do not show anything illegal on Planned Parenthood’s part, medical and scientific conversations can be upsetting to hear, and I immediately apologized for the tone that was used, which did not reflect the compassion that people have come to know and expect from Planned Parenthood.

My response to this quote has already been given in the previous post but here I want to make a further observation that according to Planned Parenthood’s own president these videos show Planned Parenthood’s “medical and scientific conversations.”  Cecile Richards herself admits this.

Now what exactly do we find in these medical conversations?
