Trump making biased experts look foolish
When Donald Trump first burst on the political scene two months ago as a presidential candidate, many of the analysts, commentators and pollsters who populate cable news programs, the so called “experts,” claimed it was all a publicity stunt. Then, they said he would never release his financial statements. Then, they said his controversial comments about Mexican illegal immigration, Senator John McCain and Fox News Host Megyn Kelly would doom his campaign. Now, they are saying his lead cannot continue for his support has a “ceiling” and his campaign is a flash in the pan. Unfortunately for the “experts,” they are completely wrong on every one of these issues.

The Iran Nuclear Deal Means War Between Israel and Hezbollah
The debate over President Obama’s Iran nuclear deal has grown increasingly bitter inside the Beltway. The acrimony is unavoidable, and not just because of the hyper-partisanship that is ripping Washington apart from within. Rather, it’s because the deal is being painted as the only thing standing in the way of war. But this characterization is not only unfair, because it is binary and fails to account for creative scenarios. Lost in this debate is whether the deal could itself cause a war.

Why It Really All Comes Down To The Death Of The Petrodollar
In short, the world seems to have underestimated how structurally important collapsing crude prices are to global finance. For years, producers funnelled their dollar proceeds into USD assets providing a perpetual source of liquidity, boosting the financial strength of the reserve currency, leading to even higher asset prices and even more USD-denominated purchases, and so forth, in a virtuous (especially if one held US-denominated assets and printed US currency) loop. That all came to an abrupt, if quiet end last year when a confluence of economic (e.g. shale production) and geopolitical (e.g. squeeze the Russians) factors led the Saudis to, as we put it, Plaxico’d themselves and the US.

This 2 Day Stock Market Crash Was Larger Than Any 1 Day Stock Market Crash In U.S. History

Sunrise Globe Earth Planet Space - Public DomainWe witnessed something truly historic happen on Friday.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 530 points, and that followed a 358 point crash on Thursday.  When you add those two days together, the total two day stock market crash that we just witnessed comes to a grand total of 888 points, which is larger than any one day stock market crash in U.S. history.  It is also interesting to note that this 888 point crash comes in the 8th month of our calendar.  Perhaps that is just a coincidence, and perhaps it is not.  It just struck me as being noteworthy.  This is the first time that the Dow has dropped by more than 300 points on two consecutive days since November 2008, and we all remember what was happening back then.  Overall, this was the worst week for the Dow in four years, and there have only been five other months throughout history when the Dow has fallen by more than a thousand points (the most recent being October 2008).  Of course we still have six more trading days left in August, so there is plenty of time remaining for even more carnage. Dow 5,000? Yes, it could happen

stock cartoon cc

Here’s a good dose of gloom for you. The author is not saying it will happen, but he is arguing that Dow 5000 is not completely crazy. Frankly I’d be for it. If we could carve out all of the central bank fluff created post-2008 and returned to a real live market such a crash would be worth it. (It might not be so great for all those baby boomers who have ridden the Fed induced rally right before retirement however.)

I wouldn’t say that a crash on this scale or a re-institution of real, at least close to honest pricing in equities is likely. But I would say the both are possible. (OK, perhaps one is possible.)

In the mean time go cook a steak on the grill. It’s supposed to be nice weather in most of the USA this weekend. Monday can wait.

Khamenei urges Islamic unity against real enemies: US and Israel

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (photo credit: AP/Office of the Supreme Leader)

Iran’s supreme leader claimed Saturday that Islamic nations were being manipulated into internal strife by the world’s “bullies” and urged Islamic unity in the face of what he identified as the Umma’s two greatest enemies: the US and Israel.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the US had long sought to incite “third-party” states against Iran but “such third parties are only deceived puppets,” the Islamic republic’s Fars news agency reported.

“The root cause of the problems returns to their real enemies, the US and Israel,” he said.

These Charts Show How Hard China Has Hit Global Markets

Weak manufacturing data out of China was the latest bad news to wreak havoc in financial markets this week. The devaluation of the yuan last week sparked global growth concerns that hit almost every global asset class, finally reaching what had until now been a bastion of stability: the S&P 500.

European shares entered a correction while emerging-market stocks faced the biggest weekly drop in more than three years. Equities in Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Taiwan entered bear markets. And with the S&P 500’s steepest decline in 18 months yesterday, its two-day loss is the worst since 2011. Investors are selling the biggest winners of 2015 — including Netflix, Apple and Amazon.

Iran: We “Reject the Existence of Any Israeli on This Earth”

Yet Barack Obama is the best friend Iran ever had. What does that say?

Earlier this week, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on his English-language Twitter account that Iran will “take all possible means to support anyone who fights Israel, is against the Zionist regime and supports resistance.”

Panic On Wall Street As Stock Market Drops 500 Points In Wild Slide Down

U.S. stocks closed deep in the red on Friday as global growth concerns accelerated selling pressure to push the Dow and Nasdaq into correction territory.

The major averages had their biggest trade volume day of the year and posted their worst week in four years. The Dow Jones industrial average closed at session lows, off nearly 531 points and in correction territory for the first time since 2011 as all blue chips declined. The last time the index closed more than 500 points lower was on Aug. 10, 2011. In the last five years, the index has only had four instances with closing losses of more than 400 points.

“For investors the momentum and the drive of the market is now lower (than) it used to be because there’s no place to hide,” said Lance Roberts, general partner at STA Wealth Management. “Every time we hit the major technical points we kept selling.”

“What is important is the price action of the market has done something we haven’t seen since the last bull market peak,” Roberts said. “There is something going on internally in the market. That illness that has been building up in the market.”

A trader also noted that investors stopped looking at technicals and were plowing through them. “It’s an expiration day and it looks like they’re to have for sale on the close maybe as much as a billion dollars,” said Art Cashin, director of floor trading for UBS.

The Nasdaq Composite lost 3.5 percent, also closing in correction territory and joining the other major averages in negative territory for the year.

Apple declined 6 percent, in bear market territory, and the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF (IBB) plunged 3.1 percent.

“Right now there is a feeling of fear in the marketplace and all news is interpreted negatively and it’s interpreted indiscriminately,” said Tom Digenan, head of U.S. equities as UBS Global Asset Management.

The S&P 500 fell through a support level of 1,980 to end at 1,970, off 7.6 percent from its 52-week high. The index is off about 4.3 percent for the year so far. Information technology and energy led all 10 sectors lower on the day.

Energy was the worst decliner for the week, with no sectors posting weekly gains. As of Friday morning, 28 percent of the S&P 500 was in a bear market.

“It’s more of the same,” said Peter Boockvar, chief market analyst at The Lindsey Group. “From a technical perspective we broke” 2,040 on the S&P 500, the lower end of the trading range. The Russell 2000 fell into correction territory in the open and failed attempts to stay out of it. source

“When something isn’t working, it is often a good idea to reexamine one’s premises. Perhaps it is time black Americans reexamined their belief that Democrats, and only Democrats, are looking out for their best interests. That reexamination begins with the simplest of questions: Why hasn’t 50-plus years of loyalty yielded little more than the very same discontent that arose in the 1960s? Christian Leaders: ‘War Room’ Could Change a Nation

Posted: 22 Aug 2015 06:11 AM PDT

War Room comes to theaters Aug. 28 and Christian leaders who received a recent sneak peek at Atlanta’s Convergence Conference are singing its praises. They’re saying this cinematic tale of one woman teaching another to go to war spiritually in her prayer closet could be nation-changing. “If you’re really going to fight and be engaged in these last days battles for the Lord, we’re going to have to do it in our prayer closets first,” Kay Horner, Awakening America Alliance executive director, told CBN News.

“War Room is something that helps us realize that unless we engage in prayer in our personal lives and become an example in our families, to our children, that we’re really just playing around and kind of like shadow-boxing,” she added. One thing the movie highlights is why the word “war” is right in the middle of the term “prayer warrior.” FULL REPORT

2017 Total Solar Eclipse Is Coming, Hasn’t Occurred In 40 Years

Posted: 22 Aug 2015 05:48 AM PDT

Two years from today, on Aug. 21, 2017, North Americans will get an opportunity to observe nature’s greatest sky show. Picture this: The day starts off bright and sunny. Then, a bit later, you begin to notice that, although it is still sunny, the day doesn’t seem quite so bright. And still a little while later, it almost seems like some big storm is brewing. Then, suddenly, and without any warning, the midsummer day turns strangely dark.

A few stars come out. Birds and animals become confused and quickly head home to sleep. Night insects begin to chirp. All around the horizon, there is a strange yellow-orange glow resembling a weird sunset. And meanwhile, up in the sky where the sun should be, there appears instead a jet-black disk surrounded by a softly glowing halo. Then, just as suddenly, the sky brightens up. The stars disappear, birds and animals awaken, and the sun returns.

What you have just witnessed is a total eclipse of the sun. This total solar eclipse of 2017 will be the first time in nearly four decades that such an event will be visible so close to home. “Close,” of course, is a relative term. But for most Americans, this spectacular phenomenon will occur literally in their own backyards. On another interesting note, According to many Jewish Rabbis a Full Solar Eclipse is an omen of Wars or Disasters to Gentile Nations. FULL REPORT

Global Food Shock On The Horizon As US Grain Reserves Sit At Zero

Posted: 22 Aug 2015 05:37 AM PDT

Once upon a time, it was popular to say that the U.S. government only had enough wheat stored up to provide everyone in America with half a loaf of bread. But that is not true anymore. Recently, I discovered that the U.S. does not have any strategic grain reserves left at all. Zero. Nada. Zilch. As you will see below, the USDA liquidated the remaining reserves back in 2008. So if a major food crisis hit this country, our government would have nothing to give us. Of course the federal government could always go out and try to buy or seize food to feed the population during a major emergency, but that wouldn’t actually increase the total amount of food that was available. Instead, it would just give the government more power over who gets it.

The U.S. strategic grain reserve was initially created during the days of the Great Depression. Back then, the wisdom of storing up food for hard times was self-evident. Unfortunately, over time interest in this program faded, and at this point there is no strategic grain reserve in the United States at all. The following comes from the Los Angeles Times… The modern concept of a strategic grain reserve was first proposed in the 1930s by Wall Street legend Benjamin Graham. Graham’s idea hinged on the clever management of buffer stocks of grain to tame our daily bread’s tendencies toward boom and bust. When grain prices rose above a threshold, supplies could be increased by bringing reserves to the market — which, in turn, would dampen prices. And when the price of grain went into free-fall and farmers edged toward bankruptcy, the need to fill the depleted reserve would increase the demand for corn and wheat, which would prop up the price of grain. California councilman ‘purged’ for views on marriage

Posted: 22 Aug 2015 05:28 AM PDT

A California city councilman targeted for his biblical defense of natural marriage should send a message that a “purge” is under way, says an attorney who fights for religious liberty. “Where we’re at now,” says Pacific Justice Institute attorney Brad Dacus, “is an agenda to purge people from expressing their Christian worldview, who are in public service or heads of corporations.”

Newport Beach City Councilman Scott Peotter, a committed Christian, sent an email to constituents critical of the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing unnatural marriage. That sent homosexual activists into an uproar.”Of course if he’d uttered his support for same-sex marriage,” says Dacus, “that would have been acceptable and he would not have been censured.” FULL REPORT

Why we need to pay close attention to Hurricane Danny as it has strengthened to a Category 3

Posted: 21 Aug 2015 08:23 PM PDT

Hurricane Danny has strengthened further and is now a major hurricane, classified as Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, the National Hurricane Center reported Friday. But that’s not what makes this hurricane interesting, It’s the name it has. The name Danny comes from the origin of Hebrew Daniel, meaning God has judged, or God is judge.

The winds are estimated at 115 miles per hour, the center said in an advisory. Danny, the first hurricane of the 2015 Atlantic season, is not expected to further intensify. “Danny is moving into an area of unfavorable upper-level winds, and a weakening trend is expected to begin later today,” said the advisory. Danny is expected to reach Puerto Rico in about 96 hours, according to an earlier advisory. Could this Hurricane end up growing into a devastating storm fulfilling its name? Only time will tell. Earthquakes, Drought, Wildfires and now San Joaquin Valley in California is Sinking

Posted: 21 Aug 2015 08:10 PM PDT

It’s bad enough that California is being battered by one of its worst droughts on record and that thousands of wildfires are consuming over 100,000 acres of woods amid fears that global warming may be making matters even worse. Now comes a report that huge chunks of the state are literally sinking into the ground – posing serious threats to homes, businesses and roads in the affected areas.

As the result of a bizarre and tragic confluence of drought, earthquakes, ground water mismanagement and overpopulation, a vast segment of the San Joaquin Valley in northern California is literally sinking into the ground. The geological crisis – a fit subject for a wild science fiction thriller and one more crisis for Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown to contend with — was confirmed by aerial imagery by the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA). Areas of the state are literally turning into giant sinkholes. FULL REPORT

The Iran Nuclear Deal Means War Between Israel and Hezbollah

Posted: 21 Aug 2015 08:04 PM PDT

The debate over President Obama’s Iran nuclear deal has grown increasingly bitter inside the Beltway. The acrimony is unavoidable, and not just because of the hyper-partisanship that is ripping Washington apart from within. Rather, it’s because the deal is being painted as the only thing standing in the way of war. But this characterization is not only unfair, because it is binary and fails to account for creative scenarios. Lost in this debate is whether the deal could itself cause a war.

To be sure, war could erupt if Iran cheats. That is a real possibility, given Iran’s history of nuclear mendacity. But Iran may actually abide by the deal. If the regime simply waits a decade, it will be in possession of a legitimate industrial-sized nuclear program. As one seasoned Israeli reporter recently noted, a new Israeli strategy document released by Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot is planning for other conflicts. This squares with conversations I have had with several senior Israeli officials in recent months. The Middle East war that is most likely to erupt first, as a result of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, is one between Israel and the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah. FULL REPORT

Dangerous Move To Implant Abortion-Inducing Device Into Teen Girls

Posted: 22 Aug 2015 09:35 PM PDT

Just weeks after a prominent health-care expert predicted that Democrats would begin a nationwide push for taxpayer-funded contraception for schoolgirls, including abortion-inducing drugs, Virginia is proving to be the next battleground. The idea started in a Colorado pilot program, in which teenage girls were given contraceptives including implanted abortafacients known as long-acting reversible contraceptives, or LARCs, and intra-uterine devices, also called IUDs.

The program showed marked reductions in teenage births and reported abortions. Efforts then began to enact a taxpayer-funded version of the program, but it died in the Colorado Legislature over conscience and religious liberty concerns. Writing in the Washington Post, Virginia Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, who is also a pediatric neurologist, hailed the Colorado numbers as a proven way to bring teenage pregnancies way down. FULL REPORT

Greece reverts back to a BARTER economy as global financial system unravels

Posted: 22 Aug 2015 09:27 PM PDT

Greece’s finances and its national economy have both deteriorated so dramatically that now average citizens are being forced to do something they haven’t had to do since the country was occupied by Nazi Germany: Barter for their basic needs and essentials. As reported by Reuters, the rise in bartering comes amid a government-imposed cash squeeze stemming from an Athens-imposed three-week closure of the country’s banks on June 28. Since then government capital controls, put in place to avoid a run on banks, have limited the supply of cash in the hands of ordinary Greeks.

Reuters further reported: Wild boar and power cuts were Greek cotton farmer Mimis Tsakanikas’ biggest worries until a bank shutdown last month left him stranded without cash to pay suppliers, and his customers without money to pay him. Squeezed on all sides, the 41-year-old farmer began informal bartering to get around the cash crunch. He now pays some of his workers in kind with his clover crop and exchanges equipment with other farmers instead of buying or renting machinery. FULL REPORT

Atheist Activist Group Seeks ‘Permanent Benching’ of University Football Chaplains Nationwide

Posted: 22 Aug 2015 09:09 PM PDT

A prominent atheist activist organization is seeking to “permanently bench” university chaplains nationwide out of its belief that their presence suggests the endorsement of Christianity at secular institutions. The Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF) released a 25-page report this week in which it takes issue with the idea of football chaplains, stating that “Christian coaches and chaplains are converting football fields into mission fields.”

“Coaches, players, and even chaplains can worship as they want. They can go to church, read the Bible, and pray as often as they like. Nothing prevents them from doing so,” the report reads. “But they cannot use a publicly subsidized position at a university to promote their personal religion. Nor can they use the coercive nature and structure of a public football program to mandate, order, or even suggest that players under their control should worship as the coaches wish.” FULL REPORT

School band told to Stop Performing ‘How Great Thou Art’

Posted: 22 Aug 2015 08:57 PM PDT

There was no halftime show under the Friday night lights at Mississippi’s Brandon High School — the marching band had been benched. The band was ordered off the field because the Christian hymn “How Great Thou Art” was a part of their halftime show — in violation of a federal court order. “The Rankin County School Board and District Office are very saddened students will not be able to perform their halftime show they have worked so hard on this summer,” the district wrote in a statement to the Clarion Ledger newspaper.

In 2013 a student sued the district over a series of Christian meetings that had been held on school property, the newspaper reported. The district later settled the lawsuit and acknowledged they had violated the student’s First Amendment rights.   In July, U.S. District Court Judge Carlton Reeves ruled the district had violated the agreement after a Christian minister delivered a prayer at an awards ceremony. Blood Moons Tetrad is World’s ‘3rd Warning’

Posted: 22 Aug 2015 08:36 PM PDT

Pastor Mark Biltz, discoverer of the blood-moons phenomenon and the author of “Blood Moons: Decoding the Imminent Heavenly Signs,” says Christians today are being given signs from the heavens. In Biltz’s opinion, the current sequence of blood moons “is a sign for today’s Christians as judgment always begins in the house of God.” “I believe the current blood moons also signal the end of an era,” he said. Biltz notes there’s something else unique about this tetrad: its convergence with biblical holy days.

The April 15 event in 2014, for example, happened during Passover. On Oct. 8, 2014, the blood moon occurred during the Feast of Tabernacles, or Sukkot. Another of the blood moon’s occurred during Passover on April 4, 2015. The last will happen on Sept. 28, 2015, another Feast of the Tabernacles.

A blood-moon tetrad also occurred in 1493, while the Jews were being expelled from Spain. Another tetrad occurred in 1949, soon after the state of Israel was founded. The last tetrad happened in 1967, during the Six-Day War between Arabs and Israelis. FULL REPORT

WAR DRUMS – United States puts forces in South Korea on enhanced status as war looms

Posted: 22 Aug 2015 08:26 PM PDT

The United States has put its troops in South Korea on an uplifted condition of caution – known as “upgraded status” – as war in the middle of Seoul and Pyongyang looms. On Friday, North Korea cautioned its southern neighbor to end the “incitements” and its publicity shows against Pyongyang by Saturday evening or pay the cost. “In the event that South Korea does not react to our final offer,” North Korea’s representative UN representative, A Myong-hun, told correspondents in New York, “our military balance will be inescapable and that balance will be extremely solid.”

Despite the high pressures, the United States continued joint war recreations, known as Ulchi Freedom Guardian 2015, with South Korea on Friday taking after a brief suspension on Thursday. The drills mimic a full-scale intrusion by North Korea. Pyongyang has decried the joint drill as provocative. “With respect to the circumstance on the Korean promontory, the United States is extremely concerned by the [North Korean] August 4 infringement of the peace negotiation understanding and we are checking the circumstance firmly,” said David Shear, the right hand secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific security undertakings. “We are in close touch with our authorities and with our [South Korean] associate, and the United States stays resolute in its duties to the resistance of its partners and will keep on organizing nearly with the Republic of Korea,” FULL REPORT

Should We Believe the Doom and Gloom Prophecies?

Posted: 22 Aug 2015 07:59 PM PDT

I’m sober. My eyes are wide open. I see the conditions in America. I hear the cries of legitimate prophetic voices that are warning us of the destruction they see in the days ahead. I’ve been told Puerto Rico is going to be hit with a massive meteor. I’ve been told a tsunami on the East Coast will put much of Florida underwater. I’ve been told a great earthquake is coming that will split the nation in half. I’ve been told the economy is going to collapse and a widespread famine will see multitudes starve to death.

I’ve been told many things. Yet I’m still believing for a Great Awakening. I believe it’s going to be just as God told me it would be. Yes, I do believe God is disciplining America. Yes, I do believe that we’re reaping what we’ve sown. Yes, I do believe that things are going to get worse before they get better. But I absolutely, positively refuse to buy into the notion that God is not going to pour out His Spirit once again. I reject the idea that widespread transforming revival that sees a great harvest of souls is not possible in America. FULL REPORT

Thousands of Dead Fish Wash Up on Tianjin’s Shores, a Week After the Blasts

Posted: 22 Aug 2015 07:48 PM PDT

A huge number of dead fish have appeared on the shores of the northern Chinese city of Tianjin, eight days after a progression of dangerous blasts at a stockroom killed no less than 114 individuals, harmed hundreds more, and left 69 individuals, chiefly firefighters, as yet missing.

Photographs shared on online networking have racked up a large number of perspectives since Thursday and show substantial quantities of dead fish accumulated on the banks of the Haihe River, around 4 miles from the impact website, reports the state-run daily paper China Daily. The immense cease to exist of fish has driven occupants to stress that lethal chemicals from the impact could have defiled the waters around the city — the world’s tenth biggest port.

Chinese powers have affirmed that the distribution center at the focal point of the impact put away around 40 unique perilous chemicals — among them were 700 tons of exceedingly dangerous sodium cyanide, the New York Times reports. Be that as it may, nearby ecological authorities said they discovered no dangerous levels of cyanide in the water where the dead fish showed up, in spite of the fact that they were all the while examining the exact reason for the mass passings. Nook Xiaowen, executive of the Tianjin Environmental Monitoring Center, said it was not unordinary to see expansive amounts of dead fish in summer.

“At the point when the temperature rises, oxygen will vanish and fish may pass on of hypoxia,” he said at a question and answer session Thursday. Powers reported Thursday that eight out of 42 water-quality observing destinations set up around the impact zone distinguished inordinate levels of cyanide, with one site surpassing 356 times the typical level. Cleanup groups have set up isolated zones to hinder the cyanide-spoiled water were all the while attempting to sterilize the territory, reports the state-connected Global Times. Source

Only Two Religions!

I don’t know if you know this but there are only two religions in the entire world.

You might say I’m nuts.  There are hundreds if not thousands!

wearing masksBut there is one religion that likes to put on hundreds if not thousands of different masks on, and so ultimately there are only two: the religion of Human Achievement and the religion of Divine Accomplishment.

You see Islam, Mormonism, Buddhism, Catholicism, Judaism and every single religion that you have ever heard of, ultimately teaches some form of a works-based salvation. They say that you have to be a little more good than bad in order to make it to heaven. These religions encourage you to hand God a resume when you face Him one day. The resume will be filled with all your accomplishments. It will list everything you’ve done for other people, every penny you’ve given to charity and every good deed you’ve done. God will look over this resume and say, “Good job! You’ve made it into heaven”.

The problem is that if you were to enter into heaven because of a resume based on your accomplishments God would get no glory; you would be the one who gets all the praise. In fact, Ephesians 2:9 would say that salvation is not of works lest you patting-self-on-back-1should boast! Genesis chapter one shows us that God created the entire universe including you. Everything He created is designed to bring Him glory. The problem is that sin has entered the world, and from birth we all have replaced exalting God with exalting ourselves. Everything we do from birth is geared towards bringing us glory and bringing praise to ourselves. We all have a throne in our hearts that God should be sitting and reigning on, but instead we are born with ourselves sitting on it. We are so used to it we don’t even notice it to the point where we all think that our resumes are good enough to get us into heaven.

my mom thinks im coolOf course we are going to think that we are good people! Of course my mom is going to tell me I’m a good person! But what does your Creator think? He says in Romans 3:23 that we all have sinned and fall short of His glory. He also says in Romans 6:23 that the wages of sin is death. So if we stand before God and start listing accomplishments or hand Him a resume we might as well slap Jesus in the face because God is going to look at the resume and say, “I killed my only Son because you were not good enough to get to me!”

And that’s where the only other religion comes in.

The religion of Divine Accomplishment. God saw your situation, and decided that since man was so sinful and could not save himself, that He would come Himself and take the form of a man. He humbled himself, spent nine months in a womb he created, grew up with every temptation you and I face every day, but without sinning. He then died on the cross for our sins, and then rose from the dead and defeated death. He made it possible for human beings to stand before God one day and not hand Him a resume and condemn themselves further, but rather, tell God that they deserve His wrath but have placed their faith and trust in the work that Jesus did on their behalf on the cross and through His resurrection.

You see we need someone to be a substitute for us because no matter how hard we try, we can never bridge the gap between God and us. And the substitute can’t be merely a human.  It must be God Himself.

Do you see the difference between Christianity and every other religion?

“My Last Day” — the Jesus Anime

9 powerful minutes of animation that begins with a thief behind bars watching the scourging of Jesus, and it ends with the thief dying next to Jesus, and waking to see Him in a beautiful place.

The dying thief: What was so great about his faith?

There are many acts of extraordinary faith in the Bible. The one that has impressed me the most concerns the dying thief on the cross. We could take the approach that he had nothing to lose, so he decided to cast his lot with Jesus. But this makes absolutely no sense of the text and the context.
In this conversion we have a specific fulfillment of Christ’s first words on the cross. No sooner had Christ spoken the words, “Father, forgive them,” had the Father answered that prayer by turning a once-reviling criminal into a Christ-glorifying saint. While the soon-to-be converted criminal was not directly responsible for Christ’s death, he nevertheless joined with those who were and was thus indirectly addressed when Christ asked for God to forgive “them.”
Christ, the sinless one, was numbered with or counted among the transgressors (Isa. 53:12; Luke 22:37), all of whom have a bigger problem than the day-to-day sins they commit. They hate Christ, the God-man. Anyone who has a master other than the Lord Jesus hates him (Lk. 16:13; Gal. 4:8). That these two criminals loathed him is clearly manifested during the crucifixion: “And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way” (Matt. 27:44).
When the criminal who was converted was doing his worst against Christ, Christ was doing his best for this criminal.
The conversion of the one criminal was most extraordinary and testifies to the power of Christ’s prayer and the grace of God. Why?
This criminal’s faith did not come at a time such as when Christ turned water into wine; or performed miracles, such as walking on water, opening the eyes of a blind man, or raising Lazarus from the dead. No! The criminal believed on the Messiah while he was hanging as one cursed upon a tree. The criminal trusted in and boldly defended the one whose disciples had abandoned him. Jesus was at his lowest when this criminal asked to be remembered in Christ’s kingdom.
When he was on the cross, did anyone publicly cry out, as John the Baptist did, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (Jn. 1:29)? But this is essentially what the dying thief did. Little wonder, then, that Christ should promise him a place in his kingdom: “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Lk. 23:43).
The criminal acknowledged he was guilty; he acknowledged that Christ was not (“this man has done nothing wrong”); he feared God; but, and here is the key: the criminal did not merely want to be in a better place. He wanted to be with Christ in a better place: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom” (Lk. 23:42). The criminal believed “against all hope”.
Heaven is a better place because that is where Christ is. Everyone wants to go to heaven, but not everyone wants to go to Christ’s heaven. Not so with this criminal: he saw, with his eyes, Christ at his worst; but with the eyes of faith, he believed that Christ would soon be at his best, and so put his faith in a dying king.
Christ is always – always! – willing to save even the most miserable of sinners. A recognition of guilt (Lk. 23:40) and a confidence in him and not ourselves (Lk. 23:42) will always lead to the most assuring truth a sinner can receive: the Savior welcomes such into his paradise!
“One is saved, and we may not despair; the other is lost, and we may not presume.” Spurgeon

Culture Collapses When Christians Conform

Generations of believers have allowed America’s decline. When Christians slide back into the world rather than present a life-preserving influence, our culture suffers as a result. This should not come as a shock to discerning, informed, mature people of faith. Many of us are disappointed, yes, but not surprised. The natural man lives without moral restraints and accountability, while the spiritually regenerated man, the Spirit-filled Christian, lives according to the Bible’s moral code. It’s easy to see which side is winning.

How can any of us remain silent when we see the rampant evil running amok today? Our silence has tragic consequences, and we may not have a lot of time left to speak up. As Bonhoeffer said, “Silence in the face of evil is evil itself.” Then Jan Markell closes with a commentary about the mockers. Americans Nationwide Take to Streets to Demand Defunding of Planned Parenthood

Christian News Network reports:

Thousands of Americans took to the streets and public sidewalks outside of their local Planned Parenthood facility on Saturday to demand that the federal government defund the abortion giant.

According to reports, Christians and other pro-lifers gathered at over 320 locations across the nation, holding signs, praying and calling out to women not to murder their unborn child. Some rallies also featured special speakers that urged Americans to rise up against the shedding of innocent blood.

“We want to draw attention to the injustice of legalized abortion,” Monica Miller, director of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, told the Washington Post. “The American public needs to be awakened to the atrocity of what is happening to innocent unborn children.”

This era of the Church is one of extreme deception due to compromise with the standards and focus of the world. Separation between the Church and the world is not being kept. Putting to Death Sins of the Mind — Phil Johnson

“My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” — Proverbs 4:20-23

Below are some really good snippets I pieced together from a sermon by Phil Johnson titled: Wisdom Guards the Heart. It is an excellent sermon. You can listen to (and download, if you so desire) the entire thing here.

Phil Johnson“It’s not easy to keep our thoughts pure and holy, but our sinful thoughts are the first and most important sins we are called to crucify, mortify, put to death. We saw that a little bit this morning. Remember, Jesus taught that those sinful thoughts are the source and the fountain of all the evil that defiles us. That’s interesting, isn’t it? I mean, Scripture—and Jesus here—is explicitly teaching that you’re not defiled by sin that rubs off on you from the outside. Think of it. Jesus, perfectly sinless, came to this earth, dwelt among sinners as a man, and the sin that He lived in the midst of, none of it rubbed off on Him. Why? Because there was no sin coming from within to defile him. The truth is, our own sinful thoughts, what emanates from our own heart, that is the source of every problem we have. That’s what defiles us.

When the apostle Paul commands us to mortify the sin that’s in our members, his focus is not on external deeds—I read you that verse this morning, Colossians 3:5—but what he does in Colossians 3:5, when he says, “Mortify the sin that’s in your members,” he gives a long list of the kinds of sin that, basically, come out of the thought life. Sins that are hatched in an unholy heart; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, covetousness, evil concupiscence—these are all sins that occur in the mind! They are sins of the passion and of the mind. So, the process of mortifying sin, as we saw this morning, involves getting control of the mind, the imagination, the passions, the heart. Paul is calling for internal purification when he says, “Mortify the sin that is in your members.” He’s not calling merely for the reformation of our external behavior—you understand that, right? He’s not saying what your mother meant, when you were a child and she said, “Behave!” She meant, “Act nice.” Paul means, “Think nice.” That’s how sanctification works.

The focus on sanctification, in Scripture, is always about purifying the heart and renewing the mind. We’re transformed by the renewing of our mind. The outworking of our sanctification, naturally then, results in a change of behavior. But a change of behavior, without the renewal of the heart, is not sanctification at all. In fact, it’s a form of hypocrisy—and I’ll have more to say about that as we go, but first, let me give you some practical steps for guarding your heart. How can we do this? What precisely does this verse require of us? “Keep thy heart with all diligence”—what does that mean? Scripture gives us some clear guidelines for “keeping our heart” and I want to outline just the basics for you. . .

Mortify your evil thoughts…“Mortify, therefore, your members which are upon the earth…fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry,”…this is a recurring theme in the Apostle Paul’s writings, this idea of putting to death sin in your body, mortifying the sin. Romans 8:13, “If you live after the flesh, you shall die; but if you, through the Spirit, do mortify the deeds of the body, you shall live.” What he’s saying is this: put your evil thoughts to death. Deal with them ruthlessly. Don’t allow them any breathing room. Choke the life out of them. Mortify them. Romans 13:14, “Put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.”

By the way, this is one of the marks of the true Christian. Galatians 5:24 says, “They that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.” We haven’t done it perfectly. It’s a process of crucifixion, and that’s a slow death, so those affections and lusts continually come back to plague us; but if you are truly a believer, then at some point and in some way, you have begun the process of crucifying these lusts and affections.

And Paul says continue the process. Carry it through to the end, because sinful thoughts are a fierce, deadly enemy that must be met with lethal force, choked out of existence, rooted up, exterminated, and utterly purged from our lives. That’s the only way to deal with sin in your life—any sin. Understand what Jesus was saying when He said, “All that defiles you comes from your heart,” He’s saying that every sin that troubles you is hatched in your mind! If you can control your mind, if you can mortify that sin that’s in your mind, that is the pathway to sanctification. If you don’t do that, every wicked thought will destroy you, if you don’t destroy it. And you’ll never get control of your thought life if you’re not proactive, deliberate, ruthless in mortifying and putting to death the sin that’s in your heart. . .

. . .Put restraints on your heart that will keep you from entertaining iniquity in that private arena of your own mind. Put restraints on your heart—you can shorten your version to just that—put restraints on your heart. Get rid of evil influences. Don’t watch movies or read novels that fill your mind with wickedness. Have some self-control in what you expose yourself to; in biblical terms, “exercise yourself rather unto godliness.”

Look at the context of our verse now. Proverbs 4—you should have turned there—Proverbs 4:20—go back to verse 20: “My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes, and keep them in the midst of thine heart, for they are life unto those that find them and health unto all their flesh.” And then our verse, “Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.” Verse 24, “Put away from thee a froward [or deceitful mouth], and perverse lips put far from thee. Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Turn not to the right hand or the left; remove thy foot from evil.” There’s lots of sound advice about how to guard your heart in that passage I just read. Look at it closely.

First of all, if you want to guard your heart, you have to guard your ears, verse 20, “Attend to my words; incline thine ear to my sayings.” Be careful what you fill your ears with. This verse suggests that the focus of your hearing ought to be the wisdom of God’s Word. Be attentive. Incline your ears to these sayings. I’m amazed at what some Christians fill their ears with. I could probably tell a lot about the state of your sanctification just by checking the presets on your car radio, right? I mean, what that tells me is what you listen to when you’re alone and can choose to listen for yourself. What do you tune into? What do you tune into? The shock jocks with their off-color humor and the angry ranting of certain drive time radio personalities? Do you gravitate to music that’s profane and full of iniquity? I always wonder why would a Christian ever want to fill his ears with profanity and lewdness, and how can a godly person derive enjoyment from those things?

Now, I’m not suggesting that all secular music or humor is evil, but I am saying, shouldn’t our listening be dominated by that which edifies? This passage seems to say so. Our ears ought to be inclined to the truth of the Word of God. If that’s not the focus and predominance of what you listen to when you’re alone, with time to think and meditate, then you’re probably not doing a very good job of guarding your heart. . .

. . .Guard your eyes, verse 21: “Don’t let the truth depart from your eyes” and that’s also echoed in verse 25: “Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.” Keep your eyes where they ought to be or you won’t be able to keep your heart where it ought to be—that’s a simple principle. Jesus said, in Matthew 6:22-23, “The lamp of the body is the eye. If, therefore, your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is evil, your whole body shall be full of darkness.” That’s a good reason not to watch some of the stuff we watch, isn’t it? Our culture constantly bombards us with images and entertainment deliberately designed to appeal to the lust of the eyes, and if you don’t know when to turn away and refuse to watch, you aren’t doing a very good job of guarding your heart.

And I’m not speaking only about that which is overtly evil. That’s a given. I shouldn’t even have to make that point. But much of what we watch is simply a waste of time! That is as detrimental to us, spiritually, as watching evil things, because it fills our hearts with vain thoughts. The Psalmist wrote in Psalm 119:37, “Turn away mine eyes from looking at worthless things.”

Planned Parenthood Butcher Video Number 8

This the story that keeps on giving. Another video with more damning revelations about the butchers at Planned Parenthood has just been released. And it comes on the back of some good news here: a judge has ruled that the biotech firm StemExpress can’t block the Center for Medical Progress from releasing their videos. As one write-up states:

On Thursday afternoon, Alliance Defending Freedom issued a press release stating that a Superior Court of the State of California has rule in StemExpress v. The Center for Medical Progress, deciding the group has no rights to the materials produced by an undercover investigative journalist.
“People who don’t have anything to hide don’t go to court to stop journalists from reporting the truth,” said Freedom of Conscience Defense Fund President Chuck LiMandri. “The court was right to deny StemExpress’ request to gain access to damaging material against them obtained through solid investigative journalism.”
LiMandri explains exactly why. “Americans have the right to know the truth about Planned Parenthood’s sale of baby body parts and the ‘fiscal rewards’ Stem Express says that it provides to abortion clinics.” It is that right which StemExpress, Planned Parenthood, and their allies in the White House and elsewhere have attempted to deny.

PP 30Following that ruling CMP was immediately back issuing another video. In the new video we hear StemExpress CEO Cate Dyer admitting – once again over wine and a nice meal – to shipping intact fetal cadavers, and even joking about all this:

1) StemExpress CEO Cate Dyer admits that StemExpress gets intact fetuses from the abortion clinics they work with shipped to their laboratory. “Case” is the clinical term for an individual abortion (cross reference with Planned Parenthood Senior Director of Medical Services Dr. Deborah Nucatola’s discussion of “this case, that case” in lunch video), so an “intact case” means an “intact abortion”:
SE: Realistically, if we were to do an agreement with you, what do we think you could get?
Buyer: Volume-wise?
SE: On specifically liver tissue, because that’s such an area of demand for us.
Buyer: So liver, and what about intact specimens, just—?
SE: Oh, yeah, I mean if you had intact cases, which we’ve done a lot, we sometimes ship those back to our lab in its entirety.
Buyer: Okay.
SE: So that would also be great if you guys have those.
Buyer: The entire case.
SE: Yeah, yeah. Because it’s just, and the procurement for us, I mean it can go really sideways, depending on the facility, and then our samples are destroyed, and we’re like, “Really?” This was all so much work, and then just to have them be destroyed is awful. I mean we have researchers wait forever, and they want certain things, you know, perfectly done, so we started bringing them back even to manage it from a procurement expert standpoint.

4) Cate Dyer laughs and jokes about researchers being squeamish about receiving baby parts in the mail:
SE: As you probably know, one of the issues with neural tissue, it’s so fragile. It’s insanely fragile. And I don’t even know—I was gonna say, I know we get requests for neural, it’s the hardest thing in the world to ship.
Buyer: You do it as the whole calvarium.
SE: Yeah, that’s the easiest way. And we’ve actually had good success with that.
Buyer: Make sure the eyes are closed!
SE: Yeah! [laughter] Tell the lab it’s coming!
Buyer: Yeah.
SE: They’ll open the box, go, ”Oh God!” [laughter] So yeah, so many of the academic labs cannot fly like that, they’re not capable.
Buyer: Why is that? I don’t understand that.
SE: It’s almost like they don’t want to know where it comes from. I can see that. Where they’re like, “We need limbs, but no hands and feet need to be attached.” And you’re like, ? Or they want long bones, and they want you to take it all off, like, make it so that we don’t know what it is.
Buyer: Bone the chicken for me and then we’ll—
SE: That’s it.
Buyer: And then I’ll eat it, but.
SE: But we know what it is. I mean, [laughter], but their lab.
Buyer: But then it goes to that whole stigma.
SE: Oh yeah. And their lab techs freak out, and have meltdowns, and so it’s just like, yeah. I think, quite frankly, that’s why a lot of researchers ultimately, some of them want to get into other things. They want to look at bone marrow, they want to look at adipose- sort of adult human, kind of adult based sampling. They want to avoid publishing a paper that says it was derived from fetal tissue.

Wow, more damning evidence about this diabolical group of baby killers. Meanwhile in America, Saturday August 22 will see protests against PP scheduled to take place right across the country. Over 300 such protests are planned. As one report states:

Tens of thousands of pro-life advocates are expected to protest at over 300 Planned Parenthood abortion business locations tomorrow in response to Planned Parenthood selling aborted babies and their body parts. After seven shocking videos catch top Planned Parenthood abortion practitioners arranging to sell aborted babies — and even dissecting one live baby — millions of pro-life people are up in arms.
Currently, there are over 300 cities in 47 states and 5 countries represented in the nationwide protest.
Organizers of the protests say they are the outgrowth of recently released Planned Parenthood expose videos showing the abortion company trafficking in aborted baby body parts and showing a complete disregard for women and unborn children.
Eric Scheidler of Pro-Life Action League told LifeNews: “These videos are exposing the American people to the truth about Planned Parenthood and the truth about abortion. How can you deny the humanity of a tiny person whose body parts are being harvested for medical use? Worse yet, how can you make jokes about it, like the Planned Parenthood doctors do in these videos? It’s time to cease all taxpayer funding of this corrupt organization.”

And you just gotta love Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal. He is taking direct action to counter a PP rally in his state:

Gov. Bobby Jindal’s office said Thursday (Aug. 20) that he plans to counter a Planned Parenthood rally planned at the Governor’s Mansion by playing controversial videos produced by an anti-abortion group.
The videos Jindal’s office plans to play show Planned Parenthood officials discussing tissue donations from aborted fetuses that are used for medical research. The six videos have touched off a storm of controversy around the organization nationwide, but Jindal’s decision to launch an investigation into Planned Parenthood Gulf States and withdraw its Medicaid funding has made Louisiana among the states with the most forceful response.
Based on the news release from Jindal’s office, the governor’s administration has no qualms about confronting the organization — this time on the doorstep of the governor’s Baton Rouge home.
“Many Planned Parenthood supporters, including President Obama and members of the White House, said they have not or will not view the horrific Planned Parenthood videos,” Jindal’s office said in a statement. “Planned Parenthood has a right to protest today, but Governor Jindal’s office will ensure that anyone who shows up will have to witness first-hand the offensive actions of the organization they are supporting.”

Way to go Bobby. The truth always hurts, and the more we get the truth out there as found on the videos, the better. One lie after another by the pro-aborts and PP is being exposed. Another lie is that PP is essential to help women and their health issues. One recent article exposed this porkie big time.

Two leading pro-life organizations released a map today intended to showcase the thousands of community health care clinics that could step in for Planned Parenthood if it were to lose federal funding.
The map adds to a heated conversation about whether stripping Planned Parenthood of its $500 million annual taxpayer dollars would hurt women’s health care in America, or if women would be better off without it.
Alliance Defending Freedom and Charlotte Lozier Institute, the education arm of the Susan B. Anthony List, identified the different Planned Parenthood locations and community health care clinics across America.
The two groups argue there are plenty of health centers — that also can receive federal funding — to absorb Planned Parenthood’s patients should the organization be defunded by Congress….
According to data collected by the two groups, there are currently 13,540 clinics providing comprehensive health care for women, versus 665 Planned Parenthood locations.
Community health centers primarily exist to provide comprehensive care to millions of uninsured, working poor and jobless Americans.
If Planned Parenthood’s federal funding “went away tomorrow,” Mattox argues, the money “would be better used by community health centers and other places around the country that can provide a fuller range of services to women without the ethical challenges that Planned Parenthood presents.”

In my last link below we see how these clinics are broken down into various states. The graphics on both links make it clear that if PP closed tomorrow, women’s’ health needs would still be more than adequately looked after in the US. Another PP lie blown out of the water.

As I have said before, thank God for the Center for Medical Progress. They deserve a Congressional Medal of Honour, instead of the abuse and rejection they are getting from the Obama Administration. They are doing just what Wilberforce and the Clapham Sect did a few centuries ago regarding the murderous slave trade.

Both satanic movements involved making huge amounts of money out of depersonalised and dehumanised individuals: blacks and babies. Both abolitionist groups sought to defend human beings from such murderous agendas. Let the videos continue. And it is up to us to share this information far and wide.

Court Removes Injunction on Planned Parenthood Video, New Video Immediately Released

Media Research Center has the latest on the Planned Parenthood scandal:

Planned Parenthood

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Joanne O’Donnell ruled on Friday afternoon the Center for Medical Progress has First Amendment rights to release videos it covertly took of StemExpress executives talking about buying aborted baby tissue from Planed Parenthood. Almost immediately afterwards, CMP released a new video that among other thing showed the StemExpress CEO Joking about receiving entire dead babies from Planned Parenthood (over lunch).

This latest video is only two minutes long and is more of a trailer of things to come. Most of its content was made up of bits and pieces of previous videos. The one new section featured Cate Dyer, the CEO of StemExpress in a lunch meeting with undercover operatives posing as representatives of a biotech firm. Dyer is seen laughing about how StemExpress purchases fully intact aborted babies from Planned Parenthood. As she paid the check, Dyer is laughing about how shippers of the aborted babies should give a warning to lab workers to expect such a whole (intact) baby.

(The Daily Signal – by Paul Kengor)   Margaret Sanger is a saint in the feminist church. She is a charter member of the progressive hall of fame. Liberals revere this woman who preached “race improvement” and denounced what she called “human weeds”. Hillary Clinton glows that she is “in awe of” Sanger. She said so […]

WHI-1272 | The Message & Mission of the Church

This week on the White Horse Inn we are continuing our series on sustainable church discipleship. In this special conference edition of the White Horse Inn, Michael Horton challenges us to get reacquainted with Christ’s original message and mission.

As churches downplay doctrines like the sovereignty and holiness of God, the message of the gospel becomes warped and distorted. As a result, many think of Jesus more as a best friend or life coach than they do as a divine redeemer who rescues them from sin and hell. To add insult to injury the church has changed the methods of grace given in the Great Commission. Join us this week on the White Horse Inn as we learn more about the message and mission of the church and their interrelationship.

HOST QUOTE
“The danger is always that a church that will not let God separate it from the world by election, justification, sanctification will be a worldly church and eventually will be absorbed back into the bloodstream of this passing evil age. Eventually, many churches that have a sound confession conclude that the methods can differ from those that are described in Scripture. As long as the message is the same, our methods can always be changing.
“The 19th century, Charles G. Finney subordinated the ordinary means of grace to the periodical revival meaning, and he said what the church really needs today is new measures, not the ordinary ministry of preaching and sacrament and discipline, which of course the churches of the Reformation affirmed as the three marks of the church, but new measures. In fact, even Christians he said need to get saved many times in order to take it to a whole new level in their Christian life. The methods reveal the message. If we are helpless to save ourselves, then we need God to come down with methods that get the gospel all the way to us. If however we’re not spiritually dead and we just need someone to help us make that ascent up to God, then we need more excitements, more zeal, more tools that are attractive to the world.”

TERM TO LEARN
Keys of the Kingdom
83 Q. What are the keys of the kingdom? A. The preaching of the holy gospel and Christian discipline toward repentance. Both preaching and discipline open the kingdom of heaven to believers and close it to unbelievers.
84 Q. How does preaching the gospel open and close the kingdom of heaven? A. According to the command of Christ: The kingdom of heaven is opened by proclaiming and publicly declaring to each and every believer that, as often as he accepts the gospel promise in true faith, God, because of what Christ has done, truly forgives all his sins. The kingdom of heaven is closed, however, by proclaiming and publicly declaring to unbelievers and hypocrites that, as long as they do not repent, the anger of God and eternal condemnation rest on them. God’s judgment, both in this life and in the life to come, is based on this gospel testimony.
85 Q. How is the kingdom of heaven closed and opened by Christian discipline? A. According to the command of Christ: If anyone, though called a Christian, professes unchristian teachings or lives an unchristian life, if after repeated brotherly counsel, he refuses to abandon his errors and wickedness, and, if after being reported to the church, that is, to its officers, he fails to respond also to their admonition—such a one the officers exclude from the Christian fellowship by withholding the sacraments from him, and God himself excludes him from the kingdom of Christ. Such a person, when he promises and demonstrates genuine reform, is received again as a member of Christ and of his church.

Where Do We Focus in Biblical Counseling?

Words of Comfort: Lip service.

I often go through the Ten Commandments to help people see that they need God’s forgiveness. Some people say that they’ve never lied, stolen or even lusted. If you are in that category, you should know that the Ten Commandments are summed up in just two—loving God and loving your neighbor as yourself. If you love God, you will put Him first, have no other gods before Him, never use His Name in blasphemy and you will keep the Sabbath holy. If you love your neighbor, you will never lie to him, steal from him covet his property, commit adultery with his wife, or murder him.

It gets even worse for us when we realize that loving God isn’t a mere lip service. It means to love Him with all of your heart, mind, soul, and strength. Do you do that? And to love your neighbor as yourself is more than a cake given over the neighbor’s fence.

Jesus summed up the moral Law’s command to love everyone in the story of the “Good Samaritan.” The Samaritan found a man beaten and robbed. He bathed his wounds and transported him to an Inn, and told the Inn-keeper that if the man spends anything, the Samaritan would cover the bill. Do you love God and every other person to that degree? If you have failed even once, then you have fallen short of keeping the Law. Add to that your lies, lust, greed, rebellion, unthankfulness, blasphemy, fornication, envy, pride, and a multitude of sins we all have, and you have a tiny glimpse of the serious nature of your sins. You ned a Savior to wash them away and save you from death and Hell. For details on how to get everlasting life, see http://www.needGod.com

Seventh Planned Parenthood Expose’: Some Babies Are Alive When Organs Are Harvested

LTRP Note: Viewer Discretion Advised for Video Below By Heather Clark Christian News Network The seventh expose’ video surrounding Planned Parenthood’s alleged harvesting and sale of aborted babies was released today, featuring testimony that suggests that some babies are alive when their organs are harvested. The footage, released by the Center for Medical Progress, features […]

Another Planned Parenthood Video—Are You Suffering From Shock Fatigue?

The Federalist writes, “The vast majority of Americans — a whopping 70 percent — have heard little to nothing about videos showing the involvement of Planned Parenthood in the harvesting and trafficking of human fetal organs.”

That’s hard to believe.  The media is not covering this issue – at least not the big networks.  Planned Parenthood is losing support, but there hasn’t been much change in how people feel about the organization.  This could be because “the opponents of Planned Parenthood overwhelmingly think of it as an abortion provider.  For supporters, the image is quite different.  More cite the organization’s role in providing contraception, sex education and pregnancy testing than see it as an abortion provider,” according to YouGov. So many people remain uniformed about the videos and the selling of aborted baby body parts.

The latest video is even more brutal:

Holly O’Donnell describes the harvesting, or “procurement,” of organs from a nearly intact late-term fetus aborted at a Planned Parenthood clinic in California. “‘I want to see something kind of cool,’” O’Donnell says her supervisor asked her. “And she just taps the heart, and it starts beating. And I’m sitting here and I’m looking at this fetus, and its heart is beating, and I don’t know what to think.”

O’Donnell also tells how her StemExpress supervisor instructed her to cut through the face of the fetus in order to get the brain. “She gave me the scissors and told me that I had to cut down the middle of the face. I can’t even describe what that feels like,” she says. (Source: ERLC)

This is so much more that whether or not states will defund Planned Parenthood.  This is about the cold-hearted destruction of life.  Jonathan Threlfall writes “How Killing Babies Gets Justified.”  According to LifeNews, “there have been over 56 million abortions since 1973.”

I’m not judging women who get abortions, they have their own stories, wounds and trauma.  I’m asking the church what do we do about this?  How can we take a stand for life without judging others?  How can we open the doors for people who have experienced the pain of abortion?  Chances are they’re already in your church.  Others may be hesitant to come.  Being a voice for the unborn doesn’t mean picketing or shouting, it means embracing, praying, weeping and fighting for what’s right.  So, what’s right?

It is right to defund Planned Parenthood?  Is it right to talk about this in our churches?  Is it right to teach our kids about what’s happening?  Is it right to talk about this in youth group and small group?  Is it right to write about it?

I don’t know what the right answer is.  I know Jesus loved everyone and showed compassion, kindness and forgiveness.  I also know Jesus threw some temple tables and got righteously angry when His Father’s house was made a mockery.

If we hate Planned Parenthood or hate abortionists, then we’re killing with our hatred and we’ve sinned against our neighbor.  If we love, then we’re following after Jesus.  If we stand for truth and get righteously angry, we’re being like Him too.

We’ve heard there may be up to twelve Planned Parenthood videos when all is said and done. But I’m starting to wonder where is the shock and outrage that we saw at first? Are we so desensitized that we forget to weep over the precious lives lost. This is not primarily about defunding an organization. This is about weeping where God weeps and letting him use us to be a voice for the innocent.

How are you guiding this conversation in your own church?

The Passions That Prevent Adultery

The Passions That Prevent AdulteryIn three minutes, John Piper explains how God cures our heart’s broken desires for sin. When the Bible calls us to live like Christ, it doesn’t merely give us a set of commands. It presents us with something compelling and captivating that changes our minds, and then our hearts. The gospel convinces us of something irresistibly true, and then transforms our desires for something new. That conviction and passion keeps us out of bed with someone who’s not our spouse and rejects a thousand other temptations.

Look at the Book is John Piper’s latest effort to help teach people to read the Bible for themselves. It’s an ongoing series of 8–12 minute videos in which the camera is on the text, not the teacher.

As part of this new initiative, Desiring God is putting on regional events focused on certain passages of Scripture. Below, you can find all the video from our Look at the Book weekend on 1 Peter 1–2. The clip above is from Part 10: New Passions Are the Path to Holiness.

  • Surely by now you’ve seen the video of a self-proclaimed prophet taking to the stage at John MacArthur’s church. We are all very thankful for the security at Grace Community Church and for Pastor MacArthur, who handled the incident with grace, peace, biblical truth, and a little bit of well-placed wit.

  • I am already starting to prepare for this. Ladies, I hope I will see you there!
  • The Mormons are jumping on the bandwagon of women in leadership. Yeah, we could have seen that coming from quite a distance away. Every false religion needs to take whatever measures are necessary in order to make itself more palatable in the eyes of the world. This is one way that things will become more and more uncomfortable for true Christians.
  • Dear Pat Robertson, I’ve asked you before to just stop talking. Would you be more inclined to listen if I said that God told me to tell you to stop talking?

  • And speaking of the Duggars, this is the latest (and if you ask me, utterly unsurprising) news on Josh Duggar. Of course, we should be praying for Josh Duggar’s wife and children, and that God would use this to bring Duggar to true repentance.
  • This story caught my eye because of the sunflowers, but it’s bittersweet to not see any indication from this article that this woman had trusted in Christ for salvation.

Jesus Calling— “Co-creating” with God

By Warren B. Smith In Jesus Calling, “Jesus” mentions a key New Age term: co-creation. Articles of the Week

Ashley Madison & Who You Are OnlineTim Challies. I (Chris) remember hearing about AshleyMadison.com a few years ago, and being disgusted that a site existed to foster adulterous affairs. It seemed like a sick joke. But this week, as some hackers released more of Ashley Madison’s data—36 million email addresses—it’s obvious just how big of a market they had. And all that prompts Challies to issue an important reminder: when you go online, you expose who and what you really are.

Why We Can’t Just Blame Planned Parenthood, Camille Cates. Many Christian outlets—and, encouragingly, a growing number of non-Christian ones—have raised their voice in response to the Planned Parenthood videos to say, “Let’s stop this violence.” (And not a word of that protest needs to be un-said.) But what Cates offers here is a timely and gracious word for the many men and women who have abortion in their past. There is no secret, no sin, no piece of our past that God cannot take and transform from ashes to beauty. There is hope and healing in the gospel.

Nine Ways Pastors Let Ministry Harm Their Marriage, Chuck Lawless. Ministry doesn’t have to happen at the expense of family. But far too often, the two do seem at odds—and the family loses. If you’re in ministry, Lawless’ article offers some potholes to avoid. And if you’re not in ministry, this should give you a few ways to pray for your pastors.

Why Is It Hard to Make Friends Over 30? Alex Williams, NYTimes. Forging new adult friendships is difficult (and often exasperating), so it’s slightly encouraging to know that there are reasons it’s so tough. This article reveals the problem extremely well: close friendships form, so say sociologists, when three crucial conditions are met—(1) proximity, (2) repeated, unplanned interactions, and (3) a setting that encourages vulnerability. (Seriously, think of your closest friends. Not bad, sociologists, not bad.) But the article ends with a whimper, not offering any viable way of overcoming the difficulty. For Christians, however, one application is obvious: community in the church should meet all three conditions.

The Resurrection Was a Real Event in History

When I say Christianity is true, I’m not merely saying it’s meaningful to me personally, I’m saying it accurately represents the truth about reality. And there’s nothing more central to Christianity than the idea that Jesus died on the cross, removing the guilt that separated us from our perfect God by taking the punishment we deserved on Himself, and was resurrected, restoring us to a joyful relationship with God who is the very standard of goodness, truth, and beauty.

No resurrection, no Christianity.

Where does this leave the truth seeker? Fortunately, though miracles have a supernatural cause, the evidence of the effect is available for our scrutiny just as the evidence for any historical event is available to us, and so I offer this brief outline of an argument:

1. The disciples and early Christians believed in an actual, physical resurrection, according to the first-century historical evidence.

(Please note that at this point, I’m only arguing for what the disciples believed, not for whether or not it’s true.) Consider what Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:14 (his first-century authorship is generally uncontested): “If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.” Both the context of this passage and the Jewish concept of resurrection support the idea that Paul was referring to a bodily resurrection and not merely a “spiritual” one. (See also “Acts Points to a Physical Resurrection.”)

So the Christians considered the resurrection to be an actual, bodily event that was central to their faith. Indeed, as Paul asserts, without that resurrection there is no faith.

2. The resurrection was central to Christian teaching early on and was not a later addition.

There’s a pre-biblical creed recorded in 1 Corinthians 15:3-5:

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas [Peter], then to the twelve. After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now….

The technical phrase “for I delivered to you…what I also received,” along with the phrases “and that…and that…and that” indicate, according to the conventions of the time, that Paul is reciting a creed and this is not his original writing. This creed places the atonement and the resurrection at the center of the Christian faith and is not Pauline material. In fact, it can be traced back to within a few years of Jesus—probably to the ministry of Peter and James, who are mentioned specifically in the creed (James is mentioned in v. 7).

If the crucifixion happened in AD 33, Paul’s conversion happened in approximately AD 36-38. Three years later (39-41), he went to Jerusalem and met with Peter and James (see Galatians 1:18-19), so it’s probable that when they discussed the gospel then, this creed was passed on to Paul. (The fact that Peter and James are mentioned specifically in the creed indicates it probably came from their area.) Since the creed was already formulated when it was given to Paul, this means it dates back to earlier than AD 39-41. And of course, the beliefs that inspired the creed predate even the creed. Again, this time frame is accepted by critics and Christians alike. Some date the creed even earlier.

3. The disciples experienced something.

You must agree that the disciples experienced something. Whatever that something was, it changed them from a group of people who deserted Jesus and began to disperse after His death to bold proclaimers of His resurrection.

What happened to change their minds? They claimed it was seeing the resurrected Jesus. Were they trying to perpetrate a hoax? This is extremely unlikely, for nobody would go through torture and death (as most of them did) for something they knew to be a lie. So the disciples were convinced. Were they fooled by someone or something, or did Jesus actually rise from the dead?

4. Naturalistic explanations fail.

Different naturalistic explanations have been offered to explain the disciples’ experience. Those explanations have either been debunked or do not explain the evidence as adequately as does the resurrection. For example:

  • Jesus faked His death (or fainted), and did not really die on the cross.” This theory is impossible since if a man were to only pretend to be dead on a cross, he would have to discontinue pushing himself up and down—the action enabling him to breathe. However, as soon as he did that, he would, of course, not be able to breathe and would be dead anyway.
  • The disciples [or some other party] stole the body.” We are back now to the idea that the disciples sincerely believed the resurrection to be true, so it’s highly unlikely they stole the body. Additionally, had anyone else stolen the body (the Jews or the Romans), they (the body-stealers) could have easily produced a body and put an end to the unrest that was resulting from the birth of the church. This church had its start in Jerusalem where critics had a reason to stop it and the means by which to do so if any body still existed. They did not produce a body, and the church continued to grow.

The other contending naturalistic explanations likewise fail to sufficiently account for the available historical data (see here and here for responses to the hallucination hypothesis). Instead, the weight of the evidence lies with the resurrection, and rational people should always side with the weight of the evidence—even if they don’t like what they find there.

(For more information, see the work of Gary Habermas or this book by an Orthodox Jewish man who, though he has a different idea about the meaning of the resurrection, is convinced by the evidence it actually occurred in history.)

10 Things We Say in Church That Don’t Actually Make Sense

Sometimes Christians say funny things in the church. It’s like we have our own language. And it often sounds creepy to non-church goers. We mean well, but sometimes we say things in church that just don’t make sense. We’ll admit, we’ve said these phrases many times ourselves, but it’s good to stop and really think about what we mean. Here are a few of our favorites with a translation for your convenience.

1. You don’t go to church, you are the church

I am not a building. What we mean by this is we are the body. Okay, that’s weird too. Let me try again. The Church is not a building, the church is a living organism that is Christ’s body. Okay, still not helping here. Maybe we should come back to this one another time. Let’s move on.

church2. God blesses us in proportion to our givingGood people of Oz, this is not true. There is no Yellow Brick Road that swiftly leads us to the Emerald City if we follow all the rules. Yes, God calls us to give and to tithe. And yes, he blesses those who give. But no, your amount of blessing received does not equal what you give. That would be works over faith and would infer that we must earn our salvation when it’s already been given to us.

930b009d36028505914e4d7d345c57ee

3. I am so totally “blessed”This is my biggest pet peeve. And I just used it above! I wrote about it here. If you used the word “blessed” more than four times in the last paragraph you just spoke, you used it three and a half times too many. “Blessed” means to find favor or to have “self-contained happiness.” Greg Laurie writes, “the idea is that our happiness is independent of our circumstances. It is self-contained, meaning that regardless of what is happening to us externally, we can be truly happy internally.” Your new car does not make you holy. Your new baby might – I’ll give you that one. It’s good to be thankful, but when we overuse the word bless, it can make others feel like they’re not as blessed, happy or as fortunate as we are. It can also give material things more power than we intend.

11261928_777307092387870_6861955865429666110_n4. The Bible strictly forbids tattoosAre we going by Leviticus 19:28 for this one? “You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.” If so, the verse just before it says, “You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard.” It also mentions only eating what’s kosher. So … bummer for everyone who’s ever had a hair cut or shaved or eaten meat. We’re taking an Old Testament verse out of context just a bit. This passage is dealing with pagan rituals of people living near the Israelites. Also, we’re not under Old Testament law anymore.

tattoo5. God helps those who help themselvesWhere do we get this saying? I don’t think it’s in the Bible because Jesus said, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Lost people don’t typically help themselves. Jesus healed the sick, blind and hurting. Do you remember what he called the people who thought they could help themselves to heaven? White washed tombs. I think I’ll pass on that.

Is your worship exciting? I’m sorry

Source

Before I was saved I’d attended many concerts and comedy shows. Before the main act appeared, there was always an opening act or as it is known, a “warm-up act”. The intent is to whip up the audience into an excitement. Wikipedia explains,

An opening act, warm-up act, or supporting act is an entertainment act (musical, comedic, or otherwise), that performs at a concert before the featured act, or “headliner”. … The opening act’s performance serves to “warm up” the audience, making it appropriately excited and enthusiastic for the headliner.

When we were at a taping of the Johnny Carson Show (Jay Leno had taken over when we were there) someone came out before the taping began and warmed up the audience. Wikipedia explains the comedy warm-up:

A warm-up comedian or crowd warmer is a stand-up comedian who performs at a comedy club or before the filming of a television comedy in front of studio audience to get the crowd into the mood ready for the show or main act. Their role is to make the audience feel integral to the show and encourage reactions during the show. They usually work alone and perform a comedy routine while also possibly explaining aspects of the show. They will also perform during commercial breaks.

This was the case with us. I don’t remember who the warm-up comedian was, but by the time Jay Leno came out through the curtains with the intro music blaring and asked, “Are you excited?” we could enthusiastically applaud and yell “YES!” The crowd went wild.

There are many praise bands whose intent is to do the same. By the time the main act arrives on stage (pastor climbing the pulpit) he often asks, “Are you warmed up excited?” Or if the congregation looks a little serious he might say “You all look so serious. We’re in church! Smile! Isn’t it exciting!?”

Is church exciting? Is that the only proper emotion one should express in church? Excitement? What is church worship and how should we express it?

John MacArthur’s series “True Worship” has a definition:

Worship Defined

What is worship? Let me give you a definition: Worship is “honor paid to a superior being.” It means “to give homage, honor, reverence, respect, adoration, praise, or glory to a superior being.” In Scripture, the word is used indiscriminately to refer to the homage given to idols, material things, or to the true God. So the word in itself is not a holy word, it only describes honor given to a superior being.

The common New Testament word for worship is proskuneo, which means “to kiss toward, to kiss the hand, to bow down, to prostrate oneself.” The idea of worship is that one prostrates himself before a superior being with a sense of respect, awe, reverence, honor, and homage. In a Christian context, we simply apply this to God and prostrate ourselves before Him in respect and honor, paying Him the glory due His superior character.

Essentially, then, worship is giving – giving honor and respect to God. That is why we, as Christians, gather together on Sunday. We don’t gather to give respect to the preacher or those in the choir, we gather to give honor to God. The sermon and the music are just to be the stimuli that create the desire in our hearts to honor Him.

When some people attend church and they look serious it’s for a reason. We are there to pay homage to the supreme Being of the Universe, Yahweh. Did the Temple priests go dancing and prancing into the Temple hooting and hollering? Shouting “Come on, ya’all, bring on the sacrifices, it’s a great day to be in the Temple today!!!” Can’t picture it? That’s for a reason.

Here is Worship Matters on How Exciting Should Our Sunday Meetings Be?

Getting the Goal Right

But our lives aren’t an unending string of exclamation points. Our meetings shouldn’t be either. (Neither should our emails, but that’s another topic).

Strictly speaking, God never says the goal of the church gathering is excitement. It’s edification for God’s glory. We meet to stir up one another to love and good works, not simply to have an emotionally electrifying time. We meet to behold God’s glory in Christ through his Word, responding in ways appropriate to his self-revelation (Heb. 10:24; 2 Cor. 3:18).

That doesn’t mean gathering as the church isn’t meant to be a soul stirring event. We have every reason when we’re together to be excited about what God has done for us in Christ. But that’s not the same as aiming for adrenaline-pumping, professionally produced, high energy, exciting gatherings alone. That approach leaves little room to engage in expressions normal for elect exiles on our way to a new home (1 Pet. 1:1-2). Expressions like disorientation (Ps. 42:1-5). Sorrow for sin (Ps. 38:1-8). Grief (Rom. 12:15). A humble awareness of our creatureliness before our Creator (Ps. 95:6-7). Not to mention reverence and awe (Heb. 12:28).

Our greatest need when we gather is not simply to feel excited, but to encounter God: to engage with the certainty of his sovereignty, the reality of his authority, the comfort of his mercy in Christ, and the promise of his grace. We need to be strengthened for the battles against the world, our flesh, and the devil that will confront us the moment we wake up Monday morning, if not before. Mere emotional excitement, however it might be produced, won’t be sufficient.

We need God’s Word clearly expounded, God’s gospel clearly presented, and God’s presence clearly experienced. We need well crafted, intentional liturgies that cultivate God-honoring, Christ-exalting thoughts and desires (See Rhythms of Grace and Christ-Centered Worship for more on that). Our efforts to make our meetings exciting can actually end up obscuring what our congregations need the most.

Some people when they go to church are excited in a way that’s more soberly mindful of the gravitas of the situation than the outward hyperactive excitement some churches seem to want or enjoy. Church is profound. We come before our Holy God to repent of sins, to call others to repent, and to praise and worship our eternal Savior. It is awe-inspiring, and yes, exciting, but not in the foot-stomping, hand waving, fervent excitement that some plea for and yes, even demand. Insistence on demonstrating our “excitement” at being present before God and the Assembly in one particular way is not at all liberating, in fact, it’s inhibiting.

The Bible on worship:

Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:19–25:)

We should aim for a more profound excitement. Here is Worship matters again:

Towards a More Profound Excitement

The alternative to making our meetings more “exciting” isn’t trying to bore people. But Sunday mornings aren’t New Year’s Eve celebrations. They aren’t rock concerts. They aren’t pep rallies. They aren’t World Cup finals. They’re something much more mundane, and at the same time something much more eternally and cosmically significant. Our plans, lights, smooth transitions, technology, videos, sound systems, visual effects, and creativity don’t make it so. Christ dwelling in the midst of his people through his Holy Spirit makes it so. That’s why if we understand what’s going on, sharing the bread and cup during communion can be one of the highlights of our week, transcending the greatest of world championship sports rivalries in its effect on us.

What a great word. Transcendent. our worship emanates from a sinful but justified heart, upward through three heavens to arrive at the throne of God.

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite. (Isaiah 57:15).

This is the most exciting thing in the universe, our Holy Spirit in us, dwelling in our very body that is a Temple. I am hugely “excited” over this. Church leaders that insist on a enthusiasm exhibited a certain way, OR produce stage-effects designed to manipulate the congregation into exhibiting the desired enthusiastic exhibitions, should take heed of the 2 articles above.

Come, let us worship and bow down, Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand. (Psalm 95:6-7)

“The difference between a message that is a ‘Bible study’ and a message that is a ‘sermon’ is the additional meditative substance in the latter, by which God speaks through His word, and through the preacher.”

6 Anti-Church Evangelical Trends

The Reformed Reader

Set Apart: Calling a Worldly Church to a Godly Life  (This is a re-post from February, 2011.)

As I mentioned a few weeks back, this is a great book: Set Apart by R. Kent Hughes (and it’s less than $10!).  I liked his section where he gave six anti-church trends among American evangelicals (found in chapter 10).  Here they are.

1) Hitchhiker Christians:  These people say, “You go to the meetings and serve on the boards and committees, you grapple with the issues and do the work of the church and pay the bills – and I’ll come along for the ride.  But if things do not suit me, I’ll criticize and complain and probably bail out.  My thumb is always out for a better ride.”

2) Consumer Christians:  These are “ecclesiastical shoppers [that] attend one church for the preaching, send their children to a second church for its youth program, and go to a…

Torben Søndergaard and Gospel Plus

Watch Your Life and Doctrine Closely...

I recently learned about Torben Søndergaard.

Torben

He’s an evangelist and faith healer from Denmark who is quite the public prophet, faith healer, and “global evangelist”.  He runs an organization called The Last Reformation, and he’s not exactly subtle: he claims to be part of the next Protestant Reformation (otherwise known as the New Apostolic Reformation).  His about page tells the story of how he came to be a Christian, didn’t see “fruit” in his Christian life (“fruit” meaning “miraculous healings”),  and then became a full-blown faith healer and prophet who writes books by divine revelation (which would be delivering written revelation, otherwise known as “writing scripture”).

You may not have heard of him yet, but he’s definitely getting around and building steam.  He’s popping up in Singapore, PolandEngland, Australia, Holland, Turkey, South Africa, Los Angeles, etc.  All those…

I Will Not Treat You Fairly

Unfathomable Grace

Jesus came to earth to be the “Friend of Sinners,” and he was constantly surrounded by such despicable folk. This was especially true during the final hours of his life.
Self-serving, manipulative, and murderous priests were ministering in his Temple.

Wicked kings, elders, judges, and governmental leaders abused the positions God had granted them.

Foolish religious worshipers panted for the release of a convict while calling for the crucifixion of their rabbi.

Sadistic and disinterested pagans played cruel games with Jesus’ head, body and mind.

Mocking thieves, in surround sound, added to his misery in his final hours.

Eleven followers, after arguing about their greatness and faithfulness, proved to be disbelieving and doubting disciples.

And in the presence of such an unrighteous congregation, Jesus suffered. He could have come down from the cross and fairly judged such men and women, but he did not do so. Why?
Christ was condemned…

Daily Devotionals: (22nd Aug.) The Wonder of Work

thinkGOSPEL blog

Reading: Genesis 3:17-19

The Bible represents man in all of Scripture as a worker. His God is a creative God and part of the “imago dei” is creativity and industry. The pre-fall circumstances of the Garden of Eden also demanded this of Adam; he was to “till the ground” (2:5). But in Genesis 3:17–19 there is a declaration of hardship associated with this work; “blood, sweat, and tears” would be the lot of the working man.

Because work in Genesis 3:17–19 is associated with sin, we tend to think of it as contrary to the will of God, to think wisdom is a higher virtue than work, and so we say “work smart, not hard.” Modern society has promoted this philosophy and companies are busy trying to make the workplace “fun” and “enjoyable.” Workplace games and activities are becoming more and more common to help take the distaste out of…
