“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” – Matthew 5:9
In an ecumenical bid for Abrahamic restoration we are told by the emergent church leaders that this verse in Matthew 5 is an over arching command by Jesus to initiate peace with Muslims. The peace they preach is political, social, economic, and it promises a world without conflict. But is that what this verse means? Does the Prince of Peace command us to make peace, and if so what kind of peace?
A common misunderstanding amongst the emergent church is the seemingly antithetical nature of Christ to be both divisor and unifier, peacemaker and antagonist. How do we reconcile the Jesus who blesses the peacemaker with the Jesus who “came not to bring peace but a sword”? The answers lie in the context of the verses.
