December 11, 2015 US and World Briefing Report

Dec. 11, 2015

The Senate passed a stopgap measure on Thursday to avoid a potential U.S. government shutdown this weekend, as talks continue on a $1.1 trillion spending plan and separate legislation to revive dozens of tax breaks.

Retail sales climbed in November by the most in four months as American consumers put to work some of the money saved from the cheapest gasoline since early 2009. The 0.2 percent increase in November, less than forecast, followed a 0.1 percent gain in the previous month.

7 million former students are in default on a record $115 billion of federal loans, an amount that has grown almost 25 percent in two years, according to U.S. government data.

Russia’s central bank left its benchmark interest rate unchanged for a third consecutive meeting as a slump in oil prices triggered a new bout of ruble weakness, raising the risk of faster inflation. Policy makers held the one-week auction rate at 11 percent.

Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri has kicked off talks with several Wall Street banks for $5 billion to $10 billion of loans in a bid to shore up central bank reserves.

An effort to open a new path for graduates with student debt to get relief appeared to hit a snag in federal court on Thursday. During about an hour of oral arguments, the panel judges in the case of Robert Murphy vs. U.S. Department of Education questioned the wisdom of revising the harsh standards used to decide whether a borrower can wipe out their loan after declaring bankruptcy.

Next week, the first tenants will move into Moinian Group’s Sky tower at 42nd Street and 11th Avenue. It’s the borough’s largest single multifamily building, with 1,175 units. Leasing of about 300 apartments at the luxury property-featuring two outdoor pools, a pet spa, and a regulation basketball court-began in June. Rents start at $3,000 for studios, $4,200 for one-bedrooms, and $6,200 for two-bedroom units.

FBI Director Apparently Doesn’t Know How Buying a Gun on the Internet Works
Comey, perhaps surprised by the question, seemed to stumble. Graham clarified, asking “if I try to buy a gun on the internet, where do I pick it up?” Looking perplexed, the FBI Director replied “I assume it’s shipped to you, but I don’t know for sure, actually.”As the Director of the FBI, he should be well aware of the fact that if a private citizen purchases a firearm on the internet, that gun is then shipped to a Federal Firearms License holder (FFL). The individual must then pick up the gun from his or her FFL and pass a background check to take ownership of the gun, a process that is often referred to as a transfer.

Islam is at War with America: But Does America Understand that She is at War with Islam?
We have already been “infiltrated” by Islamic folks at the highest levels of our government. In the name of “political correctness” and “multiculturalism” and “leftwing liberal tolerance”, we now have Islamists in the White House, the State Dept, the FBI, Homeland Security. Truly the Trojan horse of Islam has fully penetrated American society at even the very highest levels of government, including the White House.

Obama Told NSC And FBI To ‘Downplay’ Terrorist Angle Of San Bernardino
Part of the reason for trying to avoid the designation of the shootings as terrorism is because it threatens to upset the Obama administration’s strategy in Syria. A case of Islamic terrorism in the U.S. would put additional pressure on the administration to play a much more active role in the conflict. But in this case, because the preponderance evidence so pointed to terrorism, the FBI’s hand was forced, and the agency declared the existence of a terrorism investigation, going against top-down priorities from the White House.

How to Track Five Million Illegals

The common perception is that most illegal aliens come across the border with Mexico, but most experts still believe that between 40% and 50% of illegals are actually people who came legally and overstayed their visas. According to a 2006 study by the Pew Research Center, “Nearly half of all the unauthorized migrants now living in the United States entered the country legally through a port of entry such as an airport or a border crossing point where they were subject to inspection by immigration officials.” In other words, these folks aren’t “undocumented” at all; they’ve just slipped through the cracks because enforcement has long been, shall we say, lacking.

If the giant bureaucracies of the Social Security Administration, Internal Revenue Service and Department of Homeland Security could work together, illegals who’ve overstayed would be easier to identify. (Maybe if the IRS wasn’t so busy targeting conservatives… Just a thought.)

Well, the Associated Press reports, there’s an effort afoot to track those who overstay visas: “U.S. Customs and Border Protection will begin capturing facial and eye scans of foreigners entering the country at San Diego’s Otay Mesa port of entry on foot. By February, foreigners going to Mexico on foot through the checkpoint will get scanned. The trial run, which lasts through the end of June, will help determine if authorities expand biometric screening to foreigners at all land crossings on the 1,954-mile border with Mexico. Authorities will look at the accuracy of the cameras.” The problem has never been the law. Congress has demanded these scans for more than 20 years. Again, it’s lack of enforcement that presents the biggest problem. And a legitimate tracking system will go a long way toward fixing it.

Did DHS End Program Tracking San Bernardino Attackers?

Could U.S. law enforcement stop Tashfeen Malik — the woman who helped carry out the San Bernardino attack — after she applied for a visa, before she even entered the states? Former Customs and Border Patrol analyst Phil Haney told Fox News that it was possible, if the State Department and DHS’ Office of Civil Rights had not stepped in over concerns that the program was politically incorrect. Haney had been tracking the Deobandi Movement, a group of fundamentalist Muslims, putting thousands of names and locations into a database, tracking the members as they traveled in and out of America using the visa waiver program. Both attackers were associated with the movement, and the wife’s entry attempt might have been flagged had the investigation continued.

Haney received a letter of commendation after his work identified 300 terrorists. But then the PC police stepped in and said Haney was profiling Muslims. Records were deleted. When he spoke up, Haney lost his security clearance in September 2014. Haney said, “The administration was more concerned about the civil rights and liberties of foreign Islamic groups with terrorist ties than the safety and security of Americans.” This administration can’t be trusted with national security issues. It shut down a program trying to prevent terrorist acts before they happen, but it wants to expand background checks on firearm purchase to prevent mass shootings before they happen. Go figure.

In related news, there are reports that Obama instructed law enforcement to downplay the terrorism angle in the immediate aftermath of the attack, as it undercut his preferred narrative.

The Executives Act on Gun Control

Before the blood has even dried in San Bernardino, Barack Obama and his cronies began acting in political theater. This week, Obama’s adviser Valerie Jarrett told a group of people holding a vigil in remembrance of the Sandy Hook massacre that her boss is considering proposals to institute a measure of gun control. More specifically, Obama will probably use his phone and pen to close the “gun show loophole” and expand background checks. Polls show people support background checks, so Obama’s just trying to make Republicans look unreasonable for opposing him. That shores up an incrementally larger number of people who think Republicans just won’t budge at all on the issue and don’t care that Americans keep getting killed. Recall that Obama told NBC September 2014, “Part of this job is also the theater of it. A part of it is, you know, how are you, how, how are you, well, it’s not something that — that always comes naturally to me. But it matters. And I’m mindful of that.” Make no mistake: Obama is only playing political theater. As National Review’s Charles C.W. Cooke noted, Obama doesn’t have enough time in office to propose an executive order, hold a reasonable comment period and defend the action in court. It’s all for show to demonstrate Democrats are doing something, anything, about “gun violence.”

Meanwhile in the “Constitution State,” Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy promised Thursday to sign an executive order banning the sale of firearms in the state to anyone that appears on the federal terrorism watch list, a clear erosion of due process. But like all the other gun control measures the state adopted after Sandy Hook, this one wouldn’t have stopped that massacre. More theater.

Gitmo’s ‘Going Out of Business’ Sale

By Michael Swartz

Within days after taking office, Barack Obama pompously penned an executive order closing the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, within a year. Seven years later, the facility remains open due to strenuous objections to moving Gitmo’s occupants stateside (or elsewhere) as well as concerns over the cost of closing the prison. A recent Defense Department proposal pegged the cost as $600 million, which includes separate holding facilities around the country for the remaining detainees.

Frustrated at the lack of progress, some in Obama’s camp want him to go the executive order route again and with a stroke of a pen magically make the holding cells disappear. In reality, though, Obama has stepped up the pace of releasing prisoners over the last several months with another five transferred to the United Arab Emirates this week. The current population of 107 may be in double-digits by year’s end if Obama has his way. Last month, Obama spokesman Josh Earnest intoned, “I’m not aware of any ongoing effort to devise a strategy using only the president’s executive authority to accomplish this goal. But I certainly wouldn’t … take that option off the table.”

Going it alone is never off of Obama’s table.

Emptying out the camp may be a campaign promise, but it also leaves the enormous risk of former prisoners returning to the battlefield, like a certain Yemeni al-Qaida leader.

According to Thomas Joscelyn in The Long War Journal, “Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) released a new video featuring a former Guantanamo detainee, Ibrahim Qosi, who is also known as Sheikh Khubayb al Sudani. In July 2010, Qosi plead guilty to charges of conspiracy and material support for terrorism before a military commission. His plea was part of a deal in which he agreed to cooperate with prosecutors during his remaining time in US custody. Qosi was transferred to his home country of Sudan two years later, in July 2012. Qosi joined AQAP in 2014 and became one of its leaders.”

Critics like Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) call the prospect of executive action one that would be “the most brazen assertion of executive power in over a century and spark a grave constitutional crisis.” Cotton correctly claims that Congress has the right to “make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water” as specified in the Constitution.

There’s evidence that Obama’s rush to score political points and keep his promise to the radical peacenik crowd has already placed him outside the law. A damning report released by the House Armed Services Committee found that Obama “clearly broke the law” by failing to notify Congress of his outrageous release of five Gitmo detainees in exchange for Army deserter Bowe Bergdahl before the 30-day notification period prescribed by law. On top of that, the report also accuses the commander in chief of having “misled” Congress on the status of the negotiations for Bergdahl’s release, which netted the enemy the return of a high-value group dubbed the “Taliban Five.” Last year on these pages we rued the tragic fact that six good men died in the search for Bergdahl.

(As a side note, a new exposé reveals how Bergdahl viewed himself as some sort of “Jason Bourne.” His delusions of grandeur don’t justify the swap, either.)

This much we know, however: The fact that men associated with Islamic terrorism soon may either be released to eventually return to their home countries (and the battlefield) or relocated to prisons on the American mainland is the sort of propaganda victory the enemy can use for recruitment or radicalization. Yet Obama keeps telling conservatives that our policies — including keeping Gitmo open — amount to “doing exactly what the terrorists want.”

Considering that Congress has repeatedly attempted to deny funding to close Guantanamo, the question of who’s more competent concerning national security is worth pondering as we begin to close the book on the Obama era.

Jonah Goldberg: “The claim that Trump is a committed conservative is not very believable. Until recently, he was for higher taxes on the wealthy, taking in Syrian refugees and single-payer health care. He almost never talks about the Constitution, faith or liberty unless forced to. In 2012, Trump condemned Mitt Romney for being too harsh on illegal immigration. In May of this year, he attacked ‘publicity seekers’ who needlessly provoked Muslims. With the exception of a few single-issue voters on immigration, Trump fans love him for his enemies and for his populist bombast, not for any specific principles. In other words, he divides the GOP more up-down than he does left-right. Trump defenders can rightly point to the fact that he draws support from a wide swath of voters. Critics can rightly point out that he draws animosity from an even wider swath of voters. But neither should go around talking about how Trump represents the conservative base.”

Insight: “[P]rudent minds have as a natural gift one safeguard which is the common possession of all, and this applies especially to the dealings of democracies. What is this safeguard? Skepticism. This you must preserve. This you must retain.” —Demosthenes (384-322 BC)

Bad omen: Junk bonds are getting trashed – USA Today

A trader works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange during the afternoon of December 4, 2015 in New York City.

Junk bonds are getting trashed – leading to the biggest mutual fund closure since the 2008 financial crisis – and raising a potentially a bad omen for stock investors, too.

The iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate high-yield exchange-traded fund (HYG)  is down 14% from its highest point over the past year – a massive downdraft that’s already causing major dislocations in this market. The high-yield ETF has fallen to its lowest levels since 2009 – which the wounds from the financial crisis were still fresh.

Pain is getting so bad the Third Avenue Management firm that specializes on risky bonds is liquidating and preventing investors from pulling their money out of its roughly $1 billion junk bond fund. It’s the biggest failed mutual fund since the Primary Reserve Fund in 2008.

The Global Commodity Crash Tells Us That A Major Deflationary Financial Crisis Is Imminent

Global - Public DomainIf we really are plunging into a deflationary global financial crisis, we would expect to see commodity prices crash hard.  That happened just before the great stock market crash of 2008, and that is precisely what is happening once again right now.  On Thursday, the Bloomberg Commodity Index closed at 79.1544.  The last time that it closed this low was 16 years ago.  Not even during the worst moments of the last recession did it ever get so low.  Overall, the Bloomberg Commodity Index is down more than 28 percent over the past 12 months, and it has plummeted by more than half since mid-2011.  As a result of this stunning commodity collapse, extremely large mining companies such as Anglo American are imploding, giant commodity trading firms such as Glencore and Trafigura are in full-blown crisis mode, and huge portions of the global financial system are in danger of utterly collapsing. Sayonara Middle Class: 22 Stunning Pieces Of Evidence That Show The Middle Class In America Is Dying

Uncle Sam - Public DomainOnce upon a time, middle class households took home 62 percent of all income in America. Today, that number has dropped to just 43 percent. This is just one of the absolutely astounding statistics that you will read about in this article. Over the years, the middle class in America has been in steady decline. Our incomes have been going down, our net worth has been going down, the quality of our jobs has been going down, and yet the cost of living just keeps going up. As a result of all of these factors, more Americans are living in poverty today than ever before, and dependence on the government has exploded to unprecedented levels. (Read More…)

House Armed Services Committee Says Obama Broke Laws Swapping Bowe Bergdahl For Taliban Terrorists

The House Armed Services Committee has concluded that President Barack Obama “misled the public” and broke several laws when he swapped five Taliban leaders for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl

“Our report finds that the Administration clearly broke the law in not notifying Congress of the transfer,” declared committee chairman Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX). “Leading up to the transfer, DOD officials misled Congress as to the status of negotiations. Pentagon officials best positioned to assess the national security risks were left out of the process, which increases the chances of dangerous consequences from the transfer.”

The committee presented several findings in its report.

The transfer of the Taliban Five violated several laws, including the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2014. The constitutional arguments offered to justify the Department of Defense’s failure to provide the legally-required notification to the Committee 30 days in advance are incomplete and unconvincing. The violation of law also threatens constitutional separation of powers…

The Committee was misled about the extent and scope of efforts to arrange the Taliban Five transfer before it took place. The Department of Defense’s failure to communicate complete and accurate information severely harmed its relationship with the Committee, and threatens to upend a longstanding history and tradition of cooperation and comity.

The prisoners learned about their transfer on May 29, 2014, while Congress knew nothing. The department finally alerted Congress on May 31, “less than two hours” before the terrorists departed from GTMO.

The Committee also found that the five prisoners resumed their activities once they reached Qatar. “It is irresponsible to put these terrorists that much closer to the battlefield to settle a campaign promise and unconscionable to mislead Congress in the process,” said Thornberry.

President Obama Speaks on the Recovery of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl:

This is what it looks like when our Muslim president exchanges an AWOL traitor to be able to allow 5 Taliban terrorists to go back to the Middle East and resume terrorist operations against the United States.

During its investigation, the committee was told by the Pentagon’s serving General Counsel, Stephen Preston, that the Department of Justice “believed the president’s ‘constitutional authority’ over service members could permit the president to act notwithstanding the 30-day notification requirement.”

In August 2014, the Obama administration brushed aside a report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) that said Obama broke the law with the swap. The GAO cited the fact that the Pentagon or Obama did not notify Congress 30 days before they transferred the five prisoners. They also said the DoD “wrongly used $988,400 from a wartime appropriations to facilitate the transfer,” said the report.

White House officials dismissed the GAA report. “We strongly disagree with GAO’s conclusion, and we reject the implication that the administration acted unlawfully,”commented White House spokesman Eric Schultz. “The president has the constitutional responsibility to protect the lives of Americans abroad, and specifically to protect U.S. servicemembers.”

The Committee suggests that Obama purposely misled the public and Congress “to advance the president’s goal to fulfill a campaign promise to close Guantánamo Bay.”

The release coincided with the release of Bergdahl’s participation with NPR’s popular “Serial” podcast. In it, he claims he deserted his unit “to highlight poor leadership” and even compared himself to character Jason Bourne.

He claimed he fled his unit in order to “create a DUSTWUN – a radio signal that stands for ‘Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown’ – to highlight poor leadership within his unit.” Bergdahl knew his disappearance would cause a “hurricane of wrath” and a manhunt.

He immediately realized he was “in over his head,” changed plans, and become Bourne-like by collecting “intelligence and look for the Taliban before turning himself in as a way of limiting the amount of trouble he faced.”

UK Cinemas Ban Lord’s Prayer but Display Hindu gods!

Posted: 11 Dec 2015 05:36 AM PST

The Church of England has accused cinemas of hypocrisy for showing a seven-minute video about Hinduism, just three weeks after it was revealed they had banned a Lord’s Prayer advert. A short clip called SanJay’s Super Team which features Hindu gods acting as superheroes during prayer to protect a young boy is being broadcast at the Odeon, Cineworld and Vue cinemas. And the Church has complained that the decision by the chains to show the clip before screenings of new Disney Pixar film The Good Dinosaur displays ‘incoherence of their on-the-hoof policy making’.

It comes three weeks after the Mail on Sunday revealed cinemas had banned the screening of an ad in which people recite the Lord’s Prayer – because they said it could be offensive to movie-goers. Odeon, Cineworld and Vue refused to show the one-minute film the Church planned to run in cinemas across the UK before the new Star Wars blockbuster, which opens next Thursday. ALERT: 60 Cellphones Mysteriously Purchased Now Dozens of Propane Tanks Stolen in Missouri

Posted: 11 Dec 2015 05:30 AM PST

Several Missouri law enforcement agencies have notified the FBI about a large amount of cell phone purchases from area Walmarts. Now, another incident has some people wondering if we are in danger of a terrorist attack in our area. A large number of propane tanks have been reported stolen from several locations is Independence and Lee`s Summit. At the end of November, a BP gas station in Lee`s Summit reported 18-20 propane tanks stolen from the outside cages. That same night the CVS on Southwest 3rd Street reported the exact same crime.

Two weeks later, the CVS on East 23rd Street in Independence was hit, and 28 tanks were stolen from that location. Sources within law enforcement say they received an urgent safety email about the propane thefts. While there are several ways those tanks and cell phones phones can be used, in this climate, terror attacks are always a consideration. Retired FBI agent Michael Tabman says it is up to law enforcement to investigate and try to connect the dots. “Certainly, we hear something about gas being stolen we worry about a potential bomb. The good news is this is probably not part of terrorist planning for a number of reasons,” Tabman told FOX 4’s Shannon O’Brien. FULL REPORT

New Revealing Benghazi Email Could Put Hillary Clinton In Prison

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 07:32 PM PST

This newly released email could very well be the one that takes Hillary Clinton down, and try as President Obama will, he cannot claim he had no knowledge. Clinton did not make a decision of this magnitude without consulting her boss. The DC Caller reported that American military forces were available for a rescue operation not long after the U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya, came under attack by terrorists Sept. 11, 2012, according to an email to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s closest aides.

The Sept. 11, 2012, email was sent at 7:19 p.m. EST by then-Department of Defense Chief of Staff Jeremy Bash. The text reads: “I just tried you on the phone but you were all in with S [an apparent reference to Clinton] “After consulting with General Dempsey, General Ham and the Joint Staff, we have identified the forces that could move to Benghazi. They are spinning up as we speak. They include a [REDACTED]. “Assuming Principals agree to deploy these elements, we will ask State to procure the approval from host nation. Iceland Experiences Strongest Storm In 25 years

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 07:11 PM PST

Iceland saw its worst storm in 25 years Monday as a severe polar low hit the island, bringing with it rain, snow and massive wind gusts. The East Iceland weather station of Hallormsstaðaháls picked up a wind-speed reading of more than 160 mph, reports the Iceland Monitor. At Bolungarvík on the Westfjords peninsula, a personal weather station recorded a wind gust of 96 mph, with sustained maximum wind speeds of more than 60 mph.  Icelandic authorities raised the country’s severe-weather preparedness level to “hazard” Monday in preparation for the storm, the Iceland Monitor reports, and 700 rescue workers fielded around 350 calls Monday, and are still working in the northern part of the country.

There were no reports of severe injuries to people as a result of the storm, said the Iceland Review, and the Iceland Department of Civil Protection in Iceland thanked the public for heeding warnings, which, it says, no doubt saved people from injuries. But here were numerous reports of property damage. The worst weather affected populated areas by Eyjafjöll, South Iceland, and Vestmannaeyjar (the Westman Islands), where several roofs came loose and one of them landed in the neighbor’s yard, Vísir reports. Our Time is Short

Read: Recommitting Your Life To God and Jesus Christ – Restoration and Forgiveness With God and Jesus Christ (Updated Version)

What is The Gospel?

God made everything out of nothing, including you and me. His main purpose in creation was to bring him pleasure.

The chief way in which we as humanity do this is through loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

Instead of this, we have sinned against our loving Creator and acted in high-handed rebellion.

God has vowed that he will righteously and lovingly judge sinners with eternal death.

But God, being merciful, loving, gracious, and just, sent his own son, Jesus Christ, in the likeness of man to live as a man; fulfilling his perfect requirements in the place of sinners; loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

And further, his son bore the eternal judgment of God upon the cross of Calvary, as he satisfied the eternal anger of God, standing in the place of sinners. God treated Jesus as a sinner, though he was perfectly sinless, that he might declare sinners as perfect.

This glorious transaction occurs as the sinner puts their faith (dependence, trust) in the Lord Jesus Christ as their substitute. God then charges Christ’s perfection to the sinner, and no longer views him as an enemy but instead an adopted son covered in the perfect righteousness of his son.

God furnished proof that this sacrifice was accepted by raising Jesus from the dead.

God will judge the world in righteousness and all of those who are not covered in the righteousness of Christ, depending on him for forgiveness, will be forced to stand on their own to bear the eternal anger of God.

Therefore, all must turn from sin and receive Christ Jesus as Lord.

What Is the Gospel?

There is no greater message to be heard than that which we call the gospel. But as important as that is, it is often given to massive distortions or over simplifications. People think they’re preaching the gospel to you when they tell you, ‘you can have a purpose to your life’, or that ‘you can have meaning to your life’, or that ‘you can have a personal relationship with Jesus.’ All of those things are true, and they’re all important, but they don’t get to the heart of the gospel.

The gospel is called the ‘good news’ because it addresses the most serious problem that you and I have as human beings, and that problem is simply this: God is holy and He is just, and I’m not. And at the end of my life, I’m going to stand before a just and holy God, and I’ll be judged. And I’ll be judged either on the basis of my own righteousness–or lack of it –or the righteousness of another. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus lived a life of perfect righteousness, of perfect obedience to God, not for His own well being but for His people. He has done for me what I couldn’t possibly do for myself. But not only has He lived that life of perfect obedience, He offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice to satisfy the justice and the righteousness of God.

The great misconception in our day is this: that God isn’t concerned to protect His own integrity. He’s a kind of wishy-washy deity, who just waves a wand of forgiveness over everybody. No. For God to forgive you is a very costly matter. It cost the sacrifice of His own Son. So valuable was that sacrifice that God pronounced it valuable by raising Him from the dead – so that Christ died for us, He was raised for our justification. So the gospel is something objective. It is the message of who Jesus is and what He did. And it also has a subjective dimension. How are the benefits of Jesus subjectively appropriated to us? How do I get it? The Bible makes it clear that we are justified not by our works, not by our efforts, not by our deeds, but by faith–and by faith alone. The only way you can receive the benefit of Christ’s life and death is by putting your trust in Him–and in Him alone. You do that, you’re declared just by God, you’re adopted into His family, you’re forgiven of all of your sins, and you have begun your pilgrimage for eternity.

The Gospel on 5 Fingers

If you picked up a hitchhiker (not that I recommend doing that) and he saw a Bible on your car seat and said, “I’ve heard about this thing called the Gospel – can you explain it to me before you drop me off in one minute up the street?” What would you say?

Can you explain the gospel in 30 seconds? In one minute? In five minutes?

Here’s one way I have found helpful. The five main components of the gospel can be remembered on 5 fingers of one hand. Here they are:

1) Jesus’ birth
2) Jesus’ life
3) Jesus’ death
4) Jesus’ resurrection
5) Jesus’ ascension

Obviously each point can be elaborated on depending on how much time you have. Here’s the short version:

1) Jesus’ birth – Jesus, God himself, the creator of the universe, the Messiah, became a human being – took on flesh, and was born of a virgin.

2) Jesus’ life – Jesus lived a life of perfect obedience to his Father. Though he was tempted in every way as we are, he never once sinned.

3) Jesus’ death – on the cross, Jesus himself took all our sins and paid for them. God the father counted all our sins to Jesus as if he himself had personally committed them. Then Jesus bore God’s wrath towards sin – the punishment we deserved – as a substitute for us.

4) Jesus’ resurrection – within 3 days, Jesus rose physically from the dead, proving that his sacrifice for sins have been accepted by God, since the punishment for sin was death. Jesus was seen by numerous people after he rose including 500 at one time (1 Corinthians 15).

5) Jesus’ ascension – Jesus ascended physically into heaven where he reigns as King of kings and Lord of lords. And someday he will return to the earth.

That’s the gospel, the good news, and if we believe in Jesus Christ and this good news and call upon him he will save us from our sins and give us eternal life.

That’s a simple way to remember the gospel – five fingers. Even a child can do it. So ask God to give you opportunities to share his good news today.

Ready to start your new life with God?

Who do you think that I am?

With that brief question Jesus Christ confronted His followers with the most important issue they would ever face. He had spent much time with them and made some bold claims about His identity and authority. Now the time had come for them either to believe or deny His teachings.

Who do you say Jesus is? Your response to Him will determine not only your values and lifestyle, but your eternal destiny as well.
