And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon

Possessing the Treasure

by Mike Ratliff

25 And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to carry out for Him the custom of the Law, 28 then he took Him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29 “Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond- servant to depart in peace,
According to Your word;
30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation,
31 Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
32 A Light of revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of…

Gay activist group tells Obama administration to bully religious schools

WINTERY KNIGHT

Hillary Clinton and the Human Rights Campaign Hillary Clinton and the Human Rights Campaign

This is from the Daily Signal.

Excerpt:

The largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender activist group in the country is calling on the Department of Education to address what it calls a “disturbing trend” on college campuses.

Specifically, the Human Rights Campaign is calling for more transparency towards what it sees as a trend of schools citing religious reasons for not adhering to Title IX.

The Human Rights Campaign believes that in granting such exemptions, schools are given  a “license to discriminate.”

Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in educational programs that receive federal funding. If schools are found in violation of the statute, their federal dollars could be at risk.

To address these concerns, the Human Rights Campaign wants the Department of Education to issue public reports stating which institutions request or receive religious exemptions, and to detail…

The Pope Says This Christmas Is A ‘Charade’ And That For Some People ‘It May Be Their Last’

Pope Francis - Photo by Jeffrey BrunoPope Francis sure does say a lot of strange things. I don’t think that any other Pope throughout history has ever called Christmas a “charade” or has suggested that for many people this Christmas “may be their last”. What in the world would cause Pope Francis to adopt such an ominous tone? Without a doubt, the leader of the largest religious organization in the entire world would be privy to information that would not be available to ordinary people like you and I. Could it be possible that he is aware of something that is coming that is going to dramatically change life on this planet? What we do know is that our world is becoming increasingly unstable. World War III threatens to erupt in the Middle East at any time, the number of terror attacks around the globe continues to increase, earthquake activity continues to rise, giant cracks are opening up in the ground all over the world, and we are rapidly plunging into a brand new global financial crisis. There is certainly a lot to be concerned about, but what would make the Pope so glum that he would actually call Christmas a “charade”? (Read More…)

100 Year Old Christmas List From A 7 Year Old Boy Shows How Materialistic Our Society Has Become

100 Year Old Christmas List - Homer MellenIf there were no presents at all, would you still want to celebrate Christmas? 100 years ago, a little seven-year-old boy named Homer Mellen sent Santa Claus a letter asking for “a box of paints, also a nine cent reader, and a school bag to put them in.” And he added that if Santa happened to have “any nuts, or candy, or toys to spare” that he would love to have some. My, how times have changed. Today, nearly all of us expect to be showered with presents on Christmas morning, and then almost immediately people begin posting photos of their “Christmas loot” on social media websites such as Facebook. And as you will see below, the “Rich Kids of Instagram” have taken boasting about wealth to an extreme that nobody has ever seen before. Our society has become deeply, deeply materialistic, and whatever “meaning” Christmas once may have had has become almost completely lost at this point. (Read More…)

Common Sense: The Framers Were Unanimous About Islam

After careful study of historical records, it’s clear that America’s Founders and Framers were of one mind when it came to Islam, or any non-Christian belief system.

In the late-18th and early-19th centuries, Islam was referred to as “Mohametanism” and Muslims were called a number of different names, but most frequently “Moslems” or “Mohametans.” And while different beliefs were tolerated to a degree, they were not given equal station to Christianity, and for good reason.

The Fluid Line Between Revivalism And The Cults In Nineteenth-Century American Religion

Pope Francis Calls For Israel To Be Divided In Christmas Day Sermon At The Vatican

Pope Francis pleaded for solidarity with those fleeing war and poverty who travel ‘all too often through inhumane conditions and not infrequently at the risk of their lives’

“I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.” Joel 3:2 (KJV)

EDITOR’S NOTE: In the third chapter of Joel, we read about one of the fundamental reasons for God’s anger at the Battle of Armageddon. It is because outside nations have parted the land of Israel, dispersed His people, and stolen His silver and gold. Think about that as you ponder on the Pope calling for Israel to be divided today. The cup is filling up rapidly.

Pope Francis used his Christmas message to urge Israelis and Palestinians to formulate a two state solution by sitting down at the negotiation table and agreeing a peace deal to allow both sides ‘to live together in harmony’.

He asked that Israelis and Palestinians resume direct dialogue which would ‘enable two people to live together in harmony and end a conflict which has caused great conflict for the entire region’, before praying for an end to the civil war in Syria and ‘in remedying the extremely grave humanitarian situation of its suffering people’.

Speaking from the loggia of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Francis issued a Christmas Day peace appeal Friday against poverty and extremist attacks.

He said: ‘Only God’s mercy can free humanity from the many forms of evil, at times monstrous evil, which selfishness spawns in our midst.’

‘Where God is born, hope is born. He brings hope. Where God is born, peace is born. And where peace is born, there is no longer room for hatred and for war.’

Pope Francis then turned his thoughts to those affected by ‘brutal acts of terrorism’, mentioning the recent attacks that left hundreds dead in the likes of Egypt, Paris and Tunisia. He also called for the international community to end the atrocities taking place in Iraq, Libya, Yemen and sub-Saharan Africa, and called for peace and concord across Africa and in Ukraine. source

3 Diagnostic Questions to Show Who Is Really LORD of Your Money

I rarely meet people who would consider themselves tight-fisted. Most of us would like to think of ourselves as generous—even if the evidence suggests otherwise. But greed is like bad breath: The person with the problem is often the last one to know it. So we need some help revealing where our true loyalties lie.

A key way to do that is by asking diagnostic questions. Here are three that reveal what kingdom you are really living for:

1. What is “first” in your decisions?

https://www.churchleaders.com/article-headlines-widget.html

The closest I have to a life verse is Matthew 6:33: “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Before I left for college, that was the verse my dad gave to me to guide my future. “All these things …” he said, “that includes money. That includes your career. It includes your wife, if God gives you one. It includes your children. And all of that has got to come second.”

This question should be at the heart of every decision that every Christian makes: What does God want me to do? I know that sounds simple, but it’s surprising how often the opinion of God doesn’t even register as relevant information for many Christians.

Ask what God wants—for your money, your family, your career. And do just that. Always prioritize the kingdom of God, and God will supply all that you need.

2. Does God get the first and best of all you receive?

I recently noticed something in the story of Cain and Abel that has really rocked me. In Genesis 4, both Cain and Abel made offerings to God. But there was a key difference: Abel gave the “firstfruits” of his flock; Cain, in contrast, made an offering from the field after the crops had come in.

Abel, you see, gave the firstborn of his flock before knowing how many more animals there would be. He gave to God first, but that giving was a big risk. Cain, on the other hand, waited to see how much he had, and only then did he give. In other words, Abel gave God his first and best; Cain gave God out of his excess. And only Abel’s offering was pleasing to God.

Whatever you give your first and your best to reveals what is truly God in your life. It may not be the biggest line item on your budget. It may not be a gift that would make jaws drop. But we all give our first and best to something. It’s that part of our life that gets top priority. And that shows what we treasure most.

5 Reasons Giving Thanks Is Always God’s Will

1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (NIV)

People want to know God’s will for their lives, and when people ask about God’s will, they’re typically thinking about what they should do next in a particular area of their lives. Who should I marry? Where should I go to school? Which job should I accept? But these are all “number twos” when it comes to God’s will. His will is, first and foremost, that we learn to give thanks.

Why is it always God’s will no matter what happens in my life that I am to give thanks, not for my circumstances but in my circumstances?

https://www.churchleaders.com/article-headlines-widget.html

1. Gratitude honors God.

Gratitude honors God. Anytime you thank anyone, you honor them. You need to learn to thank God not just for what he does but who he is.

“God, I thank you that you’re smarter than me … I thank you that your wisdom is greater … I thank you that you know what will make me happy more than I do … I thank you that you’re consistent when I‟m inconsistent … I thank you for your love … I thank you for your mercy …” That’s thanking God for who he is, and it honors him to have this kind of attitude of thanks.

Doctors know that gratitude is the healthiest human emotion. The more grateful you are in life, the healthier you’ll be, physically. Every day, sit on the side of your bed and think of 10 things to thank God for before you get out of bed. It’ll change your attitude. It’ll change your day. The first five minutes of your day sets your mood for the rest of your day. If you start it with gratitude, you’ll be healthier, you’ll be happier; you’ll be closer to God.

God, let me just think of who you are, what you’ve done, how much you’ve done for me. I make a list and think of 10 things. Then I think of 10 more things. Give thanks. It honors God.

2. Gratitude creates fellowship.

Gratitude always builds deeper relationships between you and other people.

Do you want to rebuild your relationship with a friend, with a parent, with a spouse, with people in your small group? Whoever you want to get closer to, start spending more time expressing gratitude to them. Do you want to build your small group? Don’t just go to small group. During the week text them, email them, call them, write them.

I want to encourage you to be more intentional expressing gratitude to the people in your small group. This week, write some notes, send some text messages, emails. Just tell people how grateful you are. It brings you closer together.

Sin is Out of The Question (Mortification of Sin)

There’s a real connection between coming to Christ and the very real death of Christ. In other words, a true Christian will desire a deadness to his sin that is just as real as Christ’s death on Calvary. That’s as real as it gets. Similarly, as Christ was raised to new life three days later, so also the Christian is raised to overcome sin and death by Christ’s power; no longer to walk in it.

Josiah, Revival and the Word of God

The need of the hour is revival. All believers should be praying for heaven-sent, life-changing revival. Without it the West looks to be all but finished. While whole libraries have been filled with books on revival, let me look at one case of biblical revival, and the basis of it.

I refer to the remarkable reforms undertaken by king Josiah of Judah following the discovery of the Book of the Law. We read about this remarkable king in 2 Kings 22-23 and 2 Chronicles 34-35. And specifically we read of the rediscovery of the Word of God in 2 Kings 22 and 2 Chr. 34:14-33.

You would be familiar with the story. Josiah came to the throne at eight years of age and ruled for 31 years. During the eighteenth year of his reign (622 BC) the Book of the Law (most likely Deuteronomy) was found while temple repairs are being carried out.

While he had been involved in various reforms before this, real revival breaks out after the Word of God is found. The enormity of the predicament Judah is in and the need for change becomes clear to Josiah as he reads the book. We read about his response in 2 Chr. 34: 29-33:

josiahThen the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. He went up to the temple of the Lord with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the Levites – all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord. The king stood by his pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord – to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, and to obey the words of the covenant written in this book. Then he had everyone in Jerusalem and Benjamin pledge themselves to it; the people of Jerusalem did this in accordance with the covenant of God, the God of their ancestors. Josiah removed all the detestable idols from all the territory belonging to the Israelites, and he had all who were present in Israel serve the Lord their God. As long as he lived, they did not fail to follow the Lord, the God of their ancestors.

This was a real turning around for the people of Judah. Sadly, it was not to last (as is often the case with revival), and after Josiah died, he was followed by Jehoahaz who “did evil in the eyes of the Lord, just as his predecessors had done” (2 Kings 23:32).

But a period of grace, renewal and reform took place which was to be among the great highlights of Judah’s history. And it was all solidly based on a clear commitment to the Word of God. Biblical revelation is always the basis for powerful renewal and revival.

In his discussion about characteristics of revival in the Old Testament, Walter Kaiser says this: “Every revival in the Old Testament rested solidly on a new and powerful proclamation of the Word of God.” August Konkel comments on the vital importance of written revelation in the reign of Josiah:

The story of Josiah illustrates the critical role of written revelation to establish practice of faith. Josiah began the work of purification in Jerusalem some ten years before the discovery of the book of the Law in the temple (2 Chron. 34:3). It was the written Word that was the impetus to renewing the vow and centralizing worship at the temple. Though tradition and symbol are critical to faith, the written Word provides a foundation to endurance and faithfulness.

Indeed, all students of revival have noted the vital role the Word of God plays. Let me offer a few choice quotes on this. Brian Edwards in his 1990 volume Revival! Puts it this way:

This total acceptance of Scripture as the Word of God, and instant obedience to its commands, has characterized those whom God uses in revival. There is no escaping this fact. The reforms that took place under the leadership of both Hezekiah and, more than a half century later, Josiah, were all stimulated by a love for the Word of God and obedience to it. A study of the lives of the leaders in revival will reveal the same thing. If we long for revival, we must begin here. Jonathan Goforth was greatly used in China and elsewhere in revival from 1908 onwards. Looking back at those years he had this to say: ‘We wish to affirm, too, that we can entertain no hope of a might, globe-encircling Holy Spirit revival without there being first a back-to-the-Bible movement.’ Goforth certainly practised what he believed, for in nineteen years he read through his Chinese new testament fifty-five times!
The reason for this essential acceptance of Scripture is that in revival God uses his Word to change and correct his people, and there is always a renewed love and acceptance of Scripture. God will not trust leadership into the hands of those who deny the very weapon he is going to use more effectively than any other.”

The Word of God is crucial and we will not see God moving in glorious revival is we do not put the highest priority on Scripture, its proclamation, its reading, and its obedience. More recently Kevin DeYoung said similar things as he reminds us that the “first and most important mark [of revival] is a rediscovery of the Word of God”. Says DeYoung:

True revival will always be Bible saturated through and through. Revival is not simply renewed fervor for spiritual things. Buddhists have a fervor for spiritual things. Oprah and Tom Cruise have a hunger for spiritual things. God-wrought revival brings a fervor for the Bible, that we might live, feel, sing, pray, work, and worship according to the word of God.
In our day, the Bible will not be found while repairing the temple, but when the Spirit blows, the authority of the Bible will be rediscovered. Preachers will preach with greater unction as they preach line upon line from the Bible. The minister will plead with sinners as a dying man to dying men. Husbands will wash their wives in the word of God. Parents will instruct their children in the truth. At social settings, conversation will move from sports and the weather to discussion about the Scriptures. People of all ages will hunger to read, memorize, and study the Bible. They will love to hear good preaching. They will love to read good books. There will be renewed confidence in, desire for, and obedience to every jot and tittle of Scripture. That’s how revival starts, and without this first mark you have mere enthusiasm.

So if we crave for revival – and we all should – then we must crave for a fresh love of God’s Word, and a new willingness to read it, study it, and fully obey it. Without the Word of God fully embraced and championed, we will not see the revival we are looking for.

Let me finish with the words of Charles Spurgeon: “If we want revivals, we must revive our reverence for the Word of God. If we want conversions, we must put more of God’s Word into our sermons.”

TEXTS AND APPLICATION:  In our world of Internet, email, and social media, it’s not often that I hear anyone say what John said to the recipients of his second and third letters — one a local congregation, and one a believer named Gaius:

2 John 1:12  Though I have many things to write to you, I don’t want to do so with paper and ink. Instead, I hope to be with you and talk face to face so that our joy may be complete.

3 John 1:13  I have many things to write you, but I don’t want to write to you with pen and ink. I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.

I’m deeply grateful for the increased means by which we can communicate today, but seldom is anything as effective as face-to-face conversations. Where email can’t easily express emotion (and is thus often misread), two people talking together can more readily express their hearts. Likewise, a few questions of direct conversation can quickly resolve issues that sometimes take hours of email exchange — and that often still require a conversation. Face-to-face, we can talk, listen, respond, hug, and love one another. One-to-one, we can build relationships.

As we finish the Christmas season, we’re reminded again that God didn’t only write us a letter when we were lost in our sin; instead, He came to us. The Savior came to sinners. God lived among us. Yes, He inspired a book for us that we read every day, but the story of the book is a God who took on flesh. He came to us face-to-face.

ACTION STEPS:  Perhaps there is someone with whom you need to speak face-to-face today. Maybe you need to seek reconciliation. Or, maybe you just need to say, “I love you” to someone today.  Instead of sending an email or writing a letter, have a conversation today.

PRAYER: “Father, I’m grateful that You came to us face-to-face. Help me to show Your love to someone today . . . face-to-face.”

TOMORROW’S READING:  Revelation 1-5

Read: Recommitting Your Life To God and Jesus Christ – Restoration and Forgiveness With God and Jesus Christ (Updated Version)

What is The Gospel?

God made everything out of nothing, including you and me. His main purpose in creation was to bring him pleasure.

The chief way in which we as humanity do this is through loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

Instead of this, we have sinned against our loving Creator and acted in high-handed rebellion.

God has vowed that he will righteously and lovingly judge sinners with eternal death.

But God, being merciful, loving, gracious, and just, sent his own son, Jesus Christ, in the likeness of man to live as a man; fulfilling his perfect requirements in the place of sinners; loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

And further, his son bore the eternal judgment of God upon the cross of Calvary, as he satisfied the eternal anger of God, standing in the place of sinners. God treated Jesus as a sinner, though he was perfectly sinless, that he might declare sinners as perfect.

This glorious transaction occurs as the sinner puts their faith (dependence, trust) in the Lord Jesus Christ as their substitute. God then charges Christ’s perfection to the sinner, and no longer views him as an enemy but instead an adopted son covered in the perfect righteousness of his son.

God furnished proof that this sacrifice was accepted by raising Jesus from the dead.

God will judge the world in righteousness and all of those who are not covered in the righteousness of Christ, depending on him for forgiveness, will be forced to stand on their own to bear the eternal anger of God.

Therefore, all must turn from sin and receive Christ Jesus as Lord.

What Is the Gospel?

There is no greater message to be heard than that which we call the gospel. But as important as that is, it is often given to massive distortions or over simplifications. People think they’re preaching the gospel to you when they tell you, ‘you can have a purpose to your life’, or that ‘you can have meaning to your life’, or that ‘you can have a personal relationship with Jesus.’ All of those things are true, and they’re all important, but they don’t get to the heart of the gospel.

The gospel is called the ‘good news’ because it addresses the most serious problem that you and I have as human beings, and that problem is simply this: God is holy and He is just, and I’m not. And at the end of my life, I’m going to stand before a just and holy God, and I’ll be judged. And I’ll be judged either on the basis of my own righteousness–or lack of it –or the righteousness of another. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus lived a life of perfect righteousness, of perfect obedience to God, not for His own well being but for His people. He has done for me what I couldn’t possibly do for myself. But not only has He lived that life of perfect obedience, He offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice to satisfy the justice and the righteousness of God.

The great misconception in our day is this: that God isn’t concerned to protect His own integrity. He’s a kind of wishy-washy deity, who just waves a wand of forgiveness over everybody. No. For God to forgive you is a very costly matter. It cost the sacrifice of His own Son. So valuable was that sacrifice that God pronounced it valuable by raising Him from the dead – so that Christ died for us, He was raised for our justification. So the gospel is something objective. It is the message of who Jesus is and what He did. And it also has a subjective dimension. How are the benefits of Jesus subjectively appropriated to us? How do I get it? The Bible makes it clear that we are justified not by our works, not by our efforts, not by our deeds, but by faith–and by faith alone. The only way you can receive the benefit of Christ’s life and death is by putting your trust in Him–and in Him alone. You do that, you’re declared just by God, you’re adopted into His family, you’re forgiven of all of your sins, and you have begun your pilgrimage for eternity.

The Gospel on 5 Fingers

If you picked up a hitchhiker (not that I recommend doing that) and he saw a Bible on your car seat and said, “I’ve heard about this thing called the Gospel – can you explain it to me before you drop me off in one minute up the street?” What would you say?

Can you explain the gospel in 30 seconds? In one minute? In five minutes?

Here’s one way I have found helpful. The five main components of the gospel can be remembered on 5 fingers of one hand. Here they are:

1) Jesus’ birth
2) Jesus’ life
3) Jesus’ death
4) Jesus’ resurrection
5) Jesus’ ascension

Obviously each point can be elaborated on depending on how much time you have. Here’s the short version:

1) Jesus’ birth – Jesus, God himself, the creator of the universe, the Messiah, became a human being – took on flesh, and was born of a virgin.

2) Jesus’ life – Jesus lived a life of perfect obedience to his Father. Though he was tempted in every way as we are, he never once sinned.

3) Jesus’ death – on the cross, Jesus himself took all our sins and paid for them. God the father counted all our sins to Jesus as if he himself had personally committed them. Then Jesus bore God’s wrath towards sin – the punishment we deserved – as a substitute for us.

4) Jesus’ resurrection – within 3 days, Jesus rose physically from the dead, proving that his sacrifice for sins have been accepted by God, since the punishment for sin was death. Jesus was seen by numerous people after he rose including 500 at one time (1 Corinthians 15).

5) Jesus’ ascension – Jesus ascended physically into heaven where he reigns as King of kings and Lord of lords. And someday he will return to the earth.

That’s the gospel, the good news, and if we believe in Jesus Christ and this good news and call upon him he will save us from our sins and give us eternal life.

That’s a simple way to remember the gospel – five fingers. Even a child can do it. So ask God to give you opportunities to share his good news today.

Ready to start your new life with God?

Who do you think that I am?

With that brief question Jesus Christ confronted His followers with the most important issue they would ever face. He had spent much time with them and made some bold claims about His identity and authority. Now the time had come for them either to believe or deny His teachings.

Who do you say Jesus is? Your response to Him will determine not only your values and lifestyle, but your eternal destiny as well.

There’s a theory going around that Donald Trump might be in an even better position than you think
In 1982, California voters were supposed to elect former Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley as the state’s next governor. Bradley went into the election with a sizable lead over George Deukmejian. Exit polls projected a Bradley win. But when the ballots were counted, Deukmejian came out the winner. Thus, the “Bradley effect” was born — named as such because many white voters, who told pollsters they were voting for an African-American (Bradley), ended up breaking for the white candidate (Deukmejian). Could Donald Trump be the 2016 version of a reverse “Bradley effect?”

It’s Official: Over A Trillion Dollars A Year Will Be Added To The Debt During Obama’s Presidency

America Is BrokeUnder Barack Obama, the U.S. national debt has risen from $10,626,877,048,913.08 on January 20th, 2009 to $18,795,033,928,275.59 on December 21st, 2015.  That means that the debt that we are passing on to future generations has increased by 8.16 trillion dollars since Barack Obama was inaugurated.  There is still a little more than a year to go in Obama’s presidency, and it is already guaranteed that Obama will add more than a trillion dollars a year to the national debt during his presidency.  In fact, when you do the math, we are stealing more than 100 million dollars from future generations of Americans every single hour of every single day.  It is a crime of a magnitude that is almost unimaginable, and at this point it is mathematically impossible for the U.S. government to pay off all of this debt.  To say that we are in trouble would be a massive understatement. 58 Facts About The U.S. Economy From 2015 That Are Almost Too Crazy To Believe

58The world didn’t completely fall apart in 2015, but it is undeniable that an immense amount of damage was done to the U.S. economy.  This year the middle class continued to deteriorate, more Americans than ever found themselves living in poverty, and the debt bubble that we are living in expanded to absolutely ridiculous proportions.  Toward the end of the year, a new global financial crisis erupted, and it threatens to completely spiral out of control as we enter 2016.  Over the past six months, I have been repeatedly stressing to my readers that so many of the exact same patterns that immediately preceded the financial crisis of 2008 are happening once again, and trillions of dollars of stock market wealth has already been wiped out globally.  Some of the largest economies on the entire planet such as Brazil and Canada have already plunged into deep recessions, and just about every leading indicator that you can think of is screaming that the U.S. is heading into one.  So don’t be fooled by all the happy talk coming from Barack Obama and the mainstream media.  When you look at the cold, hard numbers, they tell a completely different story.  The following are 58 facts about the U.S. economy from 2015 that are almost too crazy to believe… (Read More….)

Suicide, Crime, Unemployment And Poverty All Soar As The Economic Crisis In Alberta Accelerates

Canadian Flag - Public DomainThe nightmare that is currently unfolding up in Canada will soon be coming to the United States. When the price of oil first started crashing, most Americans and most Canadians applauded. Most people thought that lower gas prices would be really good for the economy. Well, it turns out that the exact opposite is true. Just like in the United States, the energy industry has been the primary engine for the growth of good paying jobs in Canada since the last recession. Up in Alberta, there was such a need for oil patch workers that even someone that had just recently graduated from high school could find an oil patch job that paid six figures during the boom times. Now the “boom” is turning into a “bust”, and huge numbers of those good paying jobs are being lost. As a result, suicide, crime, unemployment and poverty are all skyrocketing, and the mainstream media is telling us that “the worst is yet to come“. (Read More…)

Pelosi Explains Support for Ryan’s Spending Deal: ‘They Were Willing to Concede So Much’

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi explained her support for the $1.2 trillion spending bill that the Republican Congress passed yesterday and President Obama signed into law by pointing out to reporters that the Republicans “were willing to concede so much” to get the bill passed.

The bill, Pelosi noted, did not stop funding of Planned Parenthood, and the Republicans “had to take out their provisions to destroy ACA”—the Affordable Care Act, AKA Obamacare.

Muslim of the Year

Larry Klayman names 1 person who ‘radically changed the world order’

No other Muslim has done as much, particularly given his power as president of the United States, to further Allah’s goal of a Christian and Jew-free world. The Holy Quran, as Obama likes to call it, teaches that this false god’s will must be obeyed and that all infidels must perish from the earth. As the inscription reads on a ring the “Muslim of the Year” has worn since college, “There is no god but Allah,” his actions and non-actions have paid homage to his real and only “deity.” Indeed, Obama can issue all the Christmas messages he falsely utters to the American people and the world – pretending to be a Christian for political expediency, subterfuge and dastardly cover – but after seven years of his presidency, “We the People” are no longer fooled. You do not have to be Donald Trump to see reality at this point. And here is the concrete proof.

Obama’s Denial of Jihad’s Ideological Roots Gravely Endangers the Nation – Andrew McCarthy

Obama’s national security strategy is suicidal because it mulishly denies two unavoidable facts: (a) terrorism is rooted in Islamic supremacism’s literalist construction of scripture, and (b) even if Islamic supremacism is not the only way of interpreting Islam, it is a mainstream interpretation of Islam.

Islamic supremacism is not merely the creed of outlier “violent extremists,” but of hundreds of millions of Muslims, the ocean in which jihadists comfortably swim.

Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi Tells Israel To Prepare To Meet ISIS Troops Face To Face

The leader of the self-declared Islamic State issued a defiant message to the West, warning “crusaders” not to dare fight on his turf

“Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.” Psalm 129:5 (KJV)

In a rare public statement – his first in seven months – Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi said Western countries had “learned from” previous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. “Crusaders and Jews don’t dare to come on the ground because they were defeated in Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said in a 23-minute long audio message released through an Isil-run internet account.

The message – dubbed an “alternative Christmas broadcast” on social media – appeared to be an effort to rally Isil followers against the growing number of enemies arrayed against them.

The leader, who has rarely been pictured and has not been heard from since he was believed to have been injured in an airstrike by Iraqi forces in October, Russian or US-led airstrikes had failed to weaken the group, which was only “expanding and getting stronger”.

Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi: The Man Who Drew the U.S. Back to Iraq

“Be confident that God will grant victory to those who worship him, and hear the good news that our state is doing well. The more intense the war against it, the purer it becomes and the tougher it gets,” he said.

He also called on Saudi citizens – the second biggest contributor to Isil ranks – to “rise up” against their government as he dimissed the kingdom’s newly formed Muslim coalition against the caliphate.

He also said Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) would soon be in Palestine to establish an Islamic state there. “Jews, soon you shall hear from us in Palestine which will become your grave,” the voice, purporting to be Baghdadi, is heard saying.

“The Jews thought we forgot Palestine and that they had distracted us from it,” he says in the recording. “Not at all, Jews. We did not forget Palestine for a moment. With the help of Allah, we will not forget it… The pioneers of the jihadist fighters will surround you on a day that you think is distant and we know is close. We are getting closer every day.”

Baghdadi had reportedly been seriously injured in a Iraqi airstrike in October.

The leader is thought to constantly move between ISIL’s strongholds of Raqqa, northeastern Syria, and Mosul, in Iraq, in a bid to avoid airstrikes. In the statement titled “Wait for we as well are waiting with you”, Baghdadi boasted that the group had fought off advances in both Syria and Iraq.

The militant Sunni Islamist group controls swathes of Iraq and Syria but has come under intensifying military pressure in recent weeks.

On Saturday, Isil suffered a major blow after a US-backed alliance of Syrian Kurds and Arab rebel groups, backed by coalition planes, captured a dam from its fighters, cutting a main supply route of the militants across the Euphrates.

Colonel Talal Selo said the rapid advance overnight by thousands of troops from the Democratic Forces of Syria had brought the dam, 15 miles upstream from the militants’ de facto capital Raqqa, under their control on Saturday afternoon.

Since the US-backed alliance was formed last October, its fighters have opened several major offensives against Islamic State with the ultimate goal of capturing Raqqa. source

Word of Caution for the New Year!

Posted: 27 Dec 2015 07:40 AM PST

WARNING! If you are easily offended don’t read this!

Get ready for the slew of “Prophetic Words” for 2016! It will most likely be the year of Great Increase, Transference of Wealth, The Rise of Revival, the Year of the Third Great Awakening, The Year of Plenty, The Year of More, The Year of Mantles, Supernatural Healing and the list goes on, all the while IF the Church continues the same way it has, all these “Promises” are empty words.

I know I swim the opposing stream here, but again I stress where there is no true repentance and change from the Church you can forget all of the above. As for me on a personal level, I’m believing for my family and I to experience “Personal Revival“! What does that mean? It means it will cost me much! It means more prayer, more fasting, more repentance, more discipline, more reading and studying the word and less indulgence of the flesh! I know it sounds like a lot of work doesn’t it?

This goes against this Generation that embraces Grace and no responsibility on our behalf. We have a lot of folks that want words spoken over them and all the blessings of Heaven but continue to walk contrary to the word of God.  So keep this in perspective before the ball drops and the New Year comes with the slew of “Prophetic Words”, because I have already seen them start rolling out of the gate.

As far as a National Word, I’m sure you will flip on some network on Christian TV and will surely hear how America’s best days are ahead and begin to see a “Great transference of Wealth” come back to the Church this year! ( This word usually is released EVERY year in some form or fashion. ) Or this will be the year of Supernatural Signs and Wonders! And the list goes on.

All the while in reality America has become even more defiant against God through shedding of innocent blood, satanic rituals, erected statues of demons, rejection of prayer, the Word and Jesus in the public arena yet somehow God is obligated to bless America through all of this? No that’s not biblical folks! Again let’s get back to the Bible! 2 Chronicles 7:14! The Church has to repent trim her wicks and put oil back in her lamps and fulfill the “Great Commision”!

UPDATE: At least 11 killed as tornado outbreak ravages parts of North Texas

Posted: 27 Dec 2015 07:13 AM PST

UPDATE: At least 11 people have died after a series of tornadoes and other severe weather created havoc across North Texas Saturday evening. Eight people died and 15 were injured in Garland, two people died in the unincorporated town of Copeville and another died in Blue Ridge, according to Fox 4 News and the Associated Press.

Four people who were killed were involved in traffic accidents during the massive storm, according to Garland police spokesman Joe Harn. At least three people who died were found in vehicles, Garland Police Lt. Pedro Barineau said, though it’s unclear if they were among the four involved in traffic accidents. Barineau added that some cars appeared to be thrown from Interstate 30 and George Bush Turnpike when the tornado hit about 6:45 p.m.

Saturday. It wasn’t known whether that was the case for the people found in the vehicles. Collin County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Harvey confirmed the three  non-Garland deaths to the Associated Press, but didn’t provide the details of their deaths. Rowlett police spokesman Det. Cruz Hernandez said several people were injured, though the number was not known. Two families were barricaded in their homes, he said. FULL REPORT

SPREADING – Dengue fever outbreak in Hawaii has global impact

Posted: 26 Dec 2015 09:27 PM PST

(The Guardian) It’s peak tourism season in Hawaii, and the state’s Department of Health has issued a warning for visitors and residents: dengue fever is spreading on the Big Island. More than 150 people on Hawaii Island have been infected with the mosquito-borne virus.

Experts say there’s no need to change your travel plans, but warn that we should be prepared for more dengue in the US and around the world. “Hawaii is a piece of a much bigger phenomenon that’s happening globally,” says Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Before 1970, severe dengue epidemics only happened in nine countries. Today, dengue is endemic in at least 125 tropical and subtropical nations in Asia, the Pacific, the Americas, Africa and the Caribbean. Local transmission is starting to happen for the first time in Croatia, France and the Madeira Islands of Portugal. While it was once believed that dengue infected 100 million people annually, the most recent analysis suggests it’s more like 390 million. India, with as many as 33m new infections every year, bears the biggest global burden. FULL REPORT

America Continues To Defy God as Goliath Rears Head!

Posted: 26 Dec 2015 09:08 PM PST

Psalm 16:4 – Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god; Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer, Nor take up their names on my lips.

Has anyone else noticed lately how bold American Cities are getting with open defiance against God and his word? For example, recently in Michigan the Satanic Temple of Detroit held its first ceremony on the steps of the Capitol in Lansing, Michigan, making it their first ever State Sanction Satanic ceremony where Satanists themselves hailed Satan, rose their blackened American flags, and vowed to bring their Satanic practices into American Schools, businesses, and to the WhiteHouse!

When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God. The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the LORD your God has not permitted you to do so. (Deuteronomy 18:9-14)

If that wasn’t enough we had a monument called the “Flying Spaghetti Monster” that was also brought to the Capitol that displayed a blob of spaghetti with eyeballs on top and giant meatball orbs on either side. The holiday cacophony kicked off when the Satanists announced they’d erect their Snaketivity display in response to a live Nativity sponsored by the Cruz campaign.

Then there is Oklahoma City where officials recently have granted a permit to a Satanist to desecrate a statue of the Virgin Mary in front of a Catholic Church on Christmas Eve! This is also the location where Satanists vowed to bring in a demonic statue of Baphomet but After the decision by the Oklahoma Supreme Court to remove the Ten Commandments Monument outside the state Capitol, the Satanic Temple found a new home for the statue which ended up in Detroit.

The Satanic Temple unveiled the bronze goat-headed statue at a location on Joseph Campau Avenue. According to reports, Hundreds of people turned up for the event, supporters and protestors, at the first location on Grand River Avenue. And who can forget the Goddess Kali who was projected on the Empire State Building in New York.” For those of you not familiar with the Goddess Kali, she is the Hindu god of death and destruction!

You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me. (Exodus 20:4-5)

Watch yourselves very carefully, so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air, or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. (Deuteronomy 4:15-18)

A majority of americans no longer have a guilty conscience about the shedding of innocent blood through abortion. In fact according to a new poll more than half of Americans say abortion should be legal in most or all cases. According to this recent poll Support for legal abortion in the U.S. has edged up to its highest level in the past two years.

Now we have our first major Winter Storm for the US and it’s name is “Goliathmeaning to uncover, remove or to go into exile: Which will spread snow and ice over the Plains, Upper Midwest and possibly New England through early next week. Some of the heaviest snow amounts may target parts of the southern High Plains where strong winds are expected to create blizzard conditions, resulting in very difficult if not impossible travel conditions. As a result, NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS) has posted blizzard watches and warnings for parts of this area.  All the while we are seeing Tornado Outbreaks in the South , Wildfires in the West and Flooding unfolding in various locations in the US. I would definitely be paying close attention to the weather and be in much prayer over the next few weeks for sure!

BREAKING NEWS – Death toll climbs to 22 as ‘Historic’ Blizzard is COMING!

Posted: 26 Dec 2015 08:28 PM PST

(BBC News) At least 22 people are now known to have died after nearly a week of tornadoes, heavy rains and flooding in several US south-central states. 2 people were found dead in Benton County, Mississippi bringing the state’s death toll to 10. Another four people died in a traffic accident in Garland, Texas. Officials said Texas and Oklahoma could be hit with a “historic blizzard”, bringing up to 16in (41cm) of snow.

Motorists were warned they could face icy roads.Six people died in Tennessee. Arkansas and Alabama each reported one fatality. In Mississippi, 56 injuries have been reported and more than 400 houses have been destroyed or damaged. At least 20 tornadoes hit the state, knocking down trees and leaving thousands without power over Christmas holidays.

One large tornado reportedly touched land in Mississippi and tore a path more than 100 miles (160 km) long to Tennessee. While extreme weather in the US before Christmas is not unknown, meteorologists say that unseasonably high temperatures in some areas contributed to the severity of the storms. READ MORE

Twitter vows to wage war on internet trolls

Posted: 26 Dec 2015 08:15 PM PST

(The Telegraph) Twitter is giving its users new powers to block internet trolls amid claims abusive behaviour is hampering the social media site from catching up with Facebook. Bruce Daisley, the head of Twitter in Europe, said the site would give its 320 millions users new tools to protect them from trolls and expose the worst offenders by encouraging people to share lists of blocked users.

Twitter, which celebrates its tenth birthday next year, is worth more than £22 billion but is lagging behind Facebook, which has more than one billion users and a valuation of £167 billion. n February Dick Costolo, Twitter’s former chief executive, admitted in an internal email that the company “sucked” at dealing with trolls.

But Mr Daisley now says the site has cracked down on nuisance users who hurl extreme abuse at those they disagree with. Measures include contacting suspected trolls to tell them “what you are doing here exists in the real world” and encouraging people to publish lists of users they have blocked. READ MORE

7 Ways Satan Tries to Destroy a Church

(Written By Ron Edmondson) “Be sober and watchful, because your adversary the devil walks around as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8, MEV).

I’m not a pastor who is constantly looking for Satan behind everything which goes wrong. I concentrate my attention on Jesus and encouraging others to follow Jesus—and not to focus on the defeated one. We are to keep “our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith.”

Yet, I’m fully aware Satan loves to destroy—or attempt to destroy—a church. Obviously, Satan is a limited being—and God’s church is secure. The gates of hell shall never overcome what God started. But, Satan certainly loves to disrupt the work of God’s church—and the work of those who love the church. Here are seven ways Satan tries to destroy a church:

1. Church conflict. Satan loves business meetings that get out of hand or when two church members have disagreements inside or outside of church. He loves when church members argue about trivial things, such as colors of the carpet or big things, such as whether to add another service. Worship style or pastoral authority doesn’t matter to the evil one. Show him a potential argument and he’s willing to stir the fire—and these days he may use social media to do it.

2. Staff or volunteer burnout. Satan loves to burn out a church volunteer, staff member, or pastor. If he can make them feel they are no longer needed, their work is not appreciated, or they no longer have anything to offer—he feels he’s winning part of the battle. He loves to spread the lies of discouragement and unworthiness.

3. Rumor spreading. Satan is the stirrer of dissension. He likes to plant little seeds of a juicy story, about someone in the church or community—sometimes even the pastor or staff—and watch them quickly spread. The version, of course, usually grows to a larger portion than reality. Satan likes this too. If you’re tempted to repeat something you know you shouldn’t, the enemy will make sure you find an opportunity. CONTINUE FOR FULL LIST

Extreme weather poses increasing threat to US power grid

Posted: 26 Dec 2015 08:04 PM PST

(PostStar) When Hurricane Katrina’s punishing storm surge plowed ashore, it swamped seven of Coast Electric Power Association’s substations, vital to powering thousands of Mississippi homes and businesses. The facilities have long since been repaired, but a decade after the storm they remain at the same elevation, and just as vulnerable to catastrophic hurricanes.

Such storms are a growing threat. An Associated Press analysis of industry data found that severe weather is the leading cause of major outages on the nation’s power grid. The number of weather-related power outages has climbed over the last decade, with the greatest spikes in 2008 and 2011, according to the AP analysis and independent studies.

That leaves Coast Electric and other utilities across the country balancing customer costs with the need for improvements to counter the rising number of violent storms, floods and droughts threatening the U.S. power grid. Katrina pummeled the Mississippi coast in August 2005, knocking out power to Coast Electric’s entire coverage area. Move over Satanists, Flying Spaghetti Monster comes to Capital of Michigan

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 07:09 PM PST

(Lansing State Journal) Christians, Jews, Satanists and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign have already staked their holiday claims to a piece the Capitol lawn. Add to that list the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. The tongue-in-cheek church — its pamphlet advertises “flimsy moral standards” and a “WAY better” heaven that includes a stripper factory and beer volcano — brought its monument to its creator to the statehouse on Friday.

The monument shows a sort of blob of spaghetti with eyeballs on top and giant meatball orbs on either side. The holiday cacophony kicked off when the Satanists announced they’d erect their Snaketivity display in response to a live Nativity sponsored by the Cruz campaign.

The Cruz nativity and a Chanukah display sponsored by state Rep. Mike Callton, R-Nashville, already happened earlier this month. State Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, and state Rep. Tom Barrett, are planning a Nativity display Saturday morning, and the Satanists’ Ekphrasis Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday evening. FULL REPORT

Israel reports record immigration of Jews from France in 2015

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 06:59 PM PST

(Reuters) A record number of French Jews moved to Israel this year, an immigration official said on Thursday, citing anti-Semitic violence and economic insecurity in the European country as causes. France has the largest Jewish population in Europe, having grown by nearly half since World War Two to some 550,000. The community has been jarred by an increase in security threats and Islamist militant attacks such as January’s gun rampage at a Paris kosher market that killed four Jews.

Israel’s quasi-governmental Jewish Agency, which encourages immigration, said some 7,900 French Jews had relocated to Israel in 2015, a 10 percent increase from the previous year. “Each has his or her reason, including the economic crisis, personal security, terrorist attacks, and, in some places and times, an anti-Jewish mood,” agency spokesman Yigal Palmor said. DEVELOPING: Israeli woman dies of swine flu, 6 others hospitalized in new outbreak

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 06:54 PM PST

(Ynet News) The Health Ministry issued a warning on Thursday of a new outbreak of swine flu in Israel, calling on the public to get a flu shot after one woman died of the H1N1 virus and at least 11 other patients were hospitalized, seven of them in serious condition. At least two of the women, who were all placed in quarantine, have not gotten the flu vaccination this year, which also includes a vaccine for swine flu.

Esther Aryeh, a 55-year-old mother of six from Netivot, passed away earlier this week after contracting swine flu and and fighting for her life for the past few weeks.  “Had Esther gotten vaccinated, this might not have happened,” said Esther’s husband Yehuda. “I call on everyone to get vaccinated. If the doctors say we should – then we must.” FULL REPORT

DEVELOPING: Rare African Virus Forces Brazil to Warn: Don’t Get Pregnant

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 06:46 PM PST

(Breitbart) Health authorities in Brazil are warning couples to delay pregnancies as they treat thousands of cases of infant brain damage experts believe could be linked to the rare African Zika virus. Some suggest the virus made its appearance in Brazil through the high influx of tourists following the 2014 World Cup.

“It’s a very personal decision, but at this moment of uncertainty, if families can put off their pregnancy plans, that’s what we’re recommending,” Angela Rocha, the pediatric infectologist at Oswaldo Cruz Hospital in Pernambuco, told CNN. Officials have recorded over 2,400 cases of microcephaly, a disorder in infants in which the size of the brain is abnormally small, this year; for comparison, doctors recorded only 147 cases of microcephaly in 2014. 29 of the infants diagnosed with microcephaly in 2015 have died.

Rocha tells CNN that “a generation of babies” is being affected in Pernambuco, the hardest-hit region of Brazil. Six states have declared a state of emergency over the matter. One of the infants was found to be carrying the Zika virus in their blood during an autopsy, and a number of the mothers reported symptoms characteristic of carrying the virus. FULL REPORT

Baby Jesus and “Merry Christmas” banner removed from VA Hospital

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 06:38 PM PST

(Written By Todd Starnes) A manger and a banner reading “Merry Christmas” were removed from a public area of a VA hospital in Texas after someone complained about “overly religious and offensive” decorations. “They ruined our decorations,” Vietnam veteran Ethel Holloway told television station KENS. “They threw them out.”

Holloway said she had been putting up decorations at the Audi Murphy VA Hospital for 33 years – without any problems. This year, her yuletide banner turned out to be problematic. “They literally took pieces from the middle of a whole train set, because the middle said ‘Merry Christmas,’” helper Grace Martinez told the television station.

The South Texas Veterans Health Care System admits they removed not only Holloway’s “Merry Christmas” banner, but also a manger along with a “specific scripture decoration.” “During the removal of a manger and specific scripture decoration, a Merry Christmas decoration was accidentally removed and damaged,” read a statement from the VA to Fox News. “The remaining decorations were removed by the decoration donor and her representatives.” FULL REPORT

Town Of Bethlehem Bans ‘Merry Christmas’ Signs

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 06:31 PM PST

(Daily Caller) The town named after the birthplace of Jesus Christ has banned signs celebrating the holidays at an intersection in the town that has become a local battleground for the War on Christmas. Officials from Bethlehem, New York had a “Happy Hanukkah” sign and a “Merry Christmas” sign removed from a busy intersection and have refused to put up any new holiday signs out of fear the signs would be breaking the law, The Albany-Times Union reports.

The town’s lawyer reportedly said Christmas trees and other symbols were acceptable, but written signs would not be allowed, a decision that has caused an uproar in the local community. The town’s decision has drawn criticism from residents and outsiders. A small group of protesters met Wednesday night at the location where the signs were. One resident, Elena Marcelle, bought two Christmas signs for the area but was told they would not be allowed. She corresponded with the town’s lawyer via email. FULL REPORT

PLAYING WITH FIRE – Oklahoma City Officials Permit Satanist to Desecrate Virgin Mary Statue

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 06:23 PM PST

(WND) Oklahoma City officials have granted a permit to a Satanist to desecrate a statue of the Virgin Mary in front of a Catholic Church on Christmas Eve, a decision that is outraging Christians who say the city’s mayor would have never allowed a similar permit to be issued in protest of a mosque. Adam Daniels, a member of the Satanist church, says he will pour fake blood over the statue and say prayers to it in an effort to dispel the notion of the virgin birth, a core doctrine not only of the Catholic Church but millions of Christians the world over.

Daniels was the Satanist who sponsored the “black mass” in Oklahoma in 2014. He said he plans to pour costume blood that has been ‘treated with sulfur powder and ash” on a statue he will bring himself, reported the Fatima Center, a Catholic website at Fatima.org. “The outrage is scheduled to take place outside St. Joseph’s Old Cathedral on December 24 from 4:30 to 6:15 p.m.,” the website reported, referring to the event as an “atrocity.” READ MORE

DAYS OF LOT – Transgender man in Ecuador makes history with pregnancy

Posted: 24 Dec 2015 02:21 PM PST

(Yahoo News) A couple in Ecuador is making history with a unique pregnancy: The father-to-be is carrying the baby of his transgender partner. Fernando Machado and Diane Rodriguez announced their pregnancy, believed to be the first of its kind in South America, on social media earlier this month and it’s received widespread attention in a continent that has seen a sudden explosion in the rights and visibility of trans people.

Rodriguez, who was born Luis, is one of Ecuador’s most-prominent LGBT activists and says she and her Venezuelan-born partner, whose birth name was Maria, decided to publicize the pregnancy to help change attitudes in the staunchly Roman Catholic society. Although both take hormones, neither has undergone gender-reassignment surgery, so the child-to-be was conceived the old-fashioned way with no known medical complications to date. “We’re trying to break the myths about transsexuality,” Rodriguez told The Associated Press. Christ Hidden in Our Schools, While Muhammad Roams the Halls Freely

Posted: 26 Dec 2015 07:37 AM PST

(Breitbart) Jesus Christ has had to go into hiding in our schools today, while Prophet Muhammad roams the halls freely. In the U.S., the media mocks those who make their Christian practices public—such as praying for victims of terrorism or young people committing to abstain from sexual relations until married. Yet that same media attacks those voicing concerns about terrorism’s link to Islamic beliefs as being Islamophobic.

In America, we see a nation so intimidated by political correctness that people in positions of responsibility make illogical decisions concerning the observation of a Christian holiday.

Recently, Eujin Jaela Kim, a new principal at Public School (PS) 169 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York, decided to prohibit the use of the word “Christmas” or displays of anything related to it including Santa, angels, gift-giving, a star, etc. Not only was Christmas taboo, Kim also mandated the Pledge of Allegiance be eliminated along with references to Thanksgiving Day. Atheist Activist Group Seeks to Stop Sheriff From Placing Cross Decals on Deputy Vehicles

Posted: 26 Dec 2015 07:30 AM PST

(Christian News Network) A prominent professing atheist group is seeking to stop a Texas sheriff from placing cross decals on his deputy vehicles out of its assertion that doing so violates the U.S. Constitution. The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) wrote to the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office on Monday after learning of Sheriff Ronny Dodson’s plan to place the crosses on the vehicles.

It pointed to a status on the Office Facebook page, written by Debbie Skelton, the mother of a local deputy. “We stand with Sheriff Ronny Dodson on his decision to place crosses on all of his deputies’ vehicles,” it reads in part. “He said that he wanted God’s protection over his deputies and that the thin blue line [on the crosses] stands for law enforcement.”“As the mother of one of these officers, I appreciate this bold statement in a time when everyone is so worried about being ‘politically correct,’” Skelton stated.

But FFRF says that the placement of the decals is unlawful and violates the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. “Displaying a Latin cross on Brewster County Sheriff’s Offices’ patrol vehicles violates the Establishment Clause,” staff attorney Sam Grover wrote in a letter to Dodson on Monday. “It is inappropriate and unconstitutional for a government entity to display a Latin cross on its property because it conveys a preference by the sheriff’s office—and by extension, Brewster County–for religion over non-religion and Christianity over all minority faiths.” FULL REPORT

Russian fighter jets smash ISIS oil tankers after spotting 12,000 at Turkish border

Posted: 26 Dec 2015 07:24 AM PST

(Express) The devastating attack was launched after pilots spotted a convoy of hundreds of vehicles it says were destined for Turkey, which Russia claims is a route the terrorist organisation is using to sell the commodity to raise money for its feared caliphate, as well as attacks on the West. It came as one of Vladimir Putin’s top officials said nearly 12,000 tankers on either side of the Syrian/Turkey border were seen on a recent mission.

In the last week, claims Moscow, 17 ISIS convoys have been destroyed in Russian airstrikes. The latest video, released by the Russian defence ministry, shows the tankers bunched together as they make their way along the road. They are then blasted by the fighter jet.

Flames and plumes of smoke are seen coming from vehicles as the camera zooms in on the carnage. Speaking of the images of the vast number of vehicles recorded by intelligence services betwen Lieutenant-General Sergey Rudskoy said: “The [aerial] imagery was made in the vicinity of Zakho (a city in Iraqi Kurdistan), there were 11,775 tankers and trucks on both sides of the Turkish-Iraqi border. Why “Just Pray About It” Won’t Solve Your Church Problems

Posted: 26 Dec 2015 07:12 AM PST

(Written By Carey Nieuwhof) Every once in awhile I hear from a leader who says, “We don’t any need more ideas/strategies/conferences … all we need to do is pray.” Well actually, writing this blog, quite often I hear from people like that. Maybe you have people like that at your church.

You even know the conversation. Every time you suggest, “Why don’t we try reformatting our services/changing our kids ministry/reaching out into the community,” they shoot back with “what we really need to do is just pray” (or “what we really need to do is get back to the Bible …”) as though that settled the discussion.

It puts you in a horribly awkward position. If you disagree, you sound like you’re coming out against prayer. If you agree, you’ve just mothballed any productive strategy conversations. I mean who really wants to come out against prayer? Not me. Not you. FULL REPORT

“Unstoppable” California Gas Leak Now Being Called Worst Catastrophe Since BP Spill

Posted: 26 Dec 2015 07:04 AM PST

(Zero Hedge) Since initially reporting on California’s Alison Canyon gas leak, more details have emerged on the scale (and potential for no solution) of the problem as the infamous Erin Brockovich writes, “the enormity of the Aliso Canyon gas leak cannot be overstated. Gas is escaping through a ruptured pipe more than 8,000 feet underground, and it shows no signs of stopping,” as according to the California Air Resources Board, methane – a greenhouse gas 72 times more impactful in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide – has been escaping from the Aliso Canyon site with force equivalent “to a volcanic eruption” for about two months now. New infrared footage exposes the massive leak..

As TheAntiMedia.org’s Claire Bernish details, methane gas continues spewing, unchecked, into the air over southern California from a fractured well to an underground storage site — at such an alarming rate that low-flying planes have necessarily been diverted by the FAA, lest internal combustion engines meet highly volatile gas and, well, blow the entire area to hell. This is, indeed, the biggest environmental catastrophe since the BP Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010; and for now, there is no way to stop it. Tuberculosis increasing at alarming rates in neighborhoods across London

Posted: 26 Dec 2015 06:58 AM PST

(EP) Diseases like tuberculosis (TB), scarlet fever and scurvy — which were rampant in the 19th and early 20th centuries — are increasing at alarming rates in neighborhoods across London, sometimes surpassing places like Iraq and Rwanda, according to CNN. The surprising revival is likely caused by increased migration, malnutrition, poverty and inaccessible health care combined with lower vaccinations for whooping cough and the measles, CNN reported.

“I think there is a general sense in this country, at least for me — which is incorrect — that infectious diseases are completely eradicated, or that we found some way to get rid of them and that they are ‘Victorian’ illnesses,” Londoner Josie Garrett, who is recovering from tuberculosis, told CNN. “The reality is that’s just not the case. It’s definitely something people need to be aware of.”Malnutrition, in particular, has increased by 51% over the past five years, the U.K. Health and Social Care Information Centre found, according to CNN.

“We meet families from across the U.K. struggling to put enough food on the table and, at the extreme end, you get people who are malnourished,” Trussell Trust chairman Chris Mould, the NGO that coordinates food banks throughout the country, told the Birmingham Post. Birmingham, a city in England, is battling increased whooping cough and gout cases. For scurvy in the U.K., the rate is now 113 per 100,000 people, up 38% from last year, the U.K. Health and Social Care Information Centre found. Scarlet fever in the U.K. is also at an all-time high, with 2014 having the most cases since the 1960s, immunologist Dr. Nuria Martinez-Alier told CNN. FULL REPORT

RUMORS OF WAR – Here’s what the next big Middle Eastern crisis could look like

Posted: 26 Dec 2015 06:54 AM PST

(Yahoo News) A host of Middle East nightmare scenarios have unfolded in recent years, from chemical warfare to attempted genocide to state collapse to the takeover of significant territory by an unprecedentedly brutal jihadist group. One of the region’s most dangerous frontlines has remained quiet through it all.

Even with repeated Israeli strikes on their weapons supply routes and stockpiles inside of Syria, open warfare hasn’t broken out between the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah and Israel. Even amid a regional meltdown, the number of rockets that the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah has fired on Israel since the conclusion of their summer 2006 war can be counted on one hand.

Few believe that the Israel-Hezbollah front will stay quiet forever. On December 20th, the calm between the two sides faced its most severe test yet, when Hezbollah commander Samir Kuntar was killed in a suspected Israeli airstrike in the outskirts of Damascus, Syria. FULL REPORT

DEVELOPING: Armed Chinese vessel enters Japan waters

Posted: 26 Dec 2015 06:46 AM PST

(Yahoo News)  A Chinese coastguard vessel with what appeared to be gun turrets entered territorial waters claimed by Japan in the East China Sea, Japan’s coastguard said on Saturday, adding that it was the first such incursion by an armed Chinese vessel in the disputed area.

The vessel was one of three that appeared in the waters off the disputed Senkaku Islands, known in China as the Diaoyus, shortly after 9:30 a.m. (0030 GMT) and left Japanese-claimed waters about 70 minutes later, a Japan coastguard spokeswoman said.

The vessel had first been sighted in the area on Tuesday afternoon and was sailing 29 km (18 miles) off one of the contested islands as of 9:00 a.m. (0000 GMT) on Wednesday, according to Japan’s coastguard. At that time, China said its vessels were carrying standard equipment and doing nothing wrong in Chinese waters. READ MORE

Our Time is Short

Did We Idolize Christmas?

Unfathomable Grace

All men have this in common, we can take anything good and turn it into an idol. It was John Calvin who said, “Man’s mind is like a store of idolatry and superstition … it is certain that he will forsake God and forge some idol in his own brain.”

An idol is much more than a bronze or wooden figure before which individuals bow, offer incense, chant, and say their prayers. No, an idol can be anything — material or nonmaterial — from which men seek lasting purpose, pleasure, protection, pride, or popularity.

Some people seek lasting purpose, pleasure, protection, pride, or popularity from their work. They worship their career and earn the title of a workaholic.

Other people hate their jobs, but they love the money which flows forth from their labors. An ample stream and stockpile of money is that in which they place their trust. Gold and silver are…

What is the meaning and significance of Christmas for Christians?

WINTERY KNIGHT

It’s the time of year when we explain what Christianity is about.

God exists

Basically, we know from a variety of scientific arguments that the universe was created and fine-tuned for life by an intelligent agent that existed causally prior to the beginning of the universe, because this agent brought the universe into being. Our purpose as humans is to enter into a two-way loving relationship with this Creator/Designer of the universe. This is the only way that we can ultimately be happy and fulfilled.

We avoid God

Now, when you look at human experience, none of us is interested in finding out about the character of this Creator/Designer, because we are afraid that if we find out too much about him then we will have our freedom to do as we please constrained by the demands of a relationship with an all-powerful, all-good being. Just knowing that such a…

Riding the Roller Coaster of God

Unfathomable Grace

For nine months Mary had been on a spiritual, emotional, and physical roller coaster.

Her Emotions Had Been Up

She had received a visit from the angel Gabriel. This included the most precious of assurances; she was favored, loved, and found incredibly delightful to the Heavenly Father. Then came the first mind-blowing announcement: this young teenage virgin would have a son, and this son would be the Promised Jewish Messiah. Then, as if nothing more grand could be imagined, another spectacular announcement followed: the father of Mary’s child would not be Joseph. No, the father would be God Almighty. What blessed news! What a blessed woman she was.

Her Emotions Had Been Down

However, when reality set in, Mary realized the beautiful plan of God included much pain for her and her family. God’s plan would affect the relationship she had with her family, her fiancé, her church, and her community, and this was only the pain she could imagine…

Christmas: Christ in you

The concerts are over and candle-light services are nearly complete. No more caroling, food drives, corporate holiday parties and the sound of Salvation army bells are quickly fading. The world will soon say goodbye to “the holidays” and will soon pivot its attention to New Year’s and Super Bowls.

The world may soon have Christmas almost in it’s rear view mirror, but for Christ’s church the wonder and joy of Christmas never ends. Isaiah prophesied that a virgin will conceive and bear a Son whose name will be Immanuel, God with us. He came to earth that day, and remains with us in every day. The Creator of the universe stepped aside from the full display of His majestic glory and dove headlong into His creation.

The day Christ was born slipped by, uncelebrated throughout the world. It was not for lack of Instagram, satellite communication or weak cell phone coverage. It was not because the postal service lost His birth announcement or a webpage failed to update. Christ entered time and space as planned. The seclusion from the abusive prying eyes of the world kept King Herod from carrying out yet another satanic attempt to assassinate the Savior.

Beyond the safety of our Savior, the world did not see the eternal significance of the first Christmas for the same reason that it cannot understand Christmas today. “The god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4). Eyes that are blind to the truth can never see the glory of the Savior who was born.

The world cannot see Jesus, but the world can see Jesus in you.

Here are five windows through which those without hope are able to see Jesus in our lives:

1 In the way we love. Jesus said, “by this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). The supernatural love of Christ flows between brothers and sisters in Christ. It’s more than a bond of unity holding our spiritual family together, it is an evangelistic love that draws unbelievers to the Savior as the source of our love.

2 In the way we endure. The target on our back grows with our godliness. The world watches as we endure trials and tragedies, problems and persecution all with joy (James 1:2). While some may ask about the source of that joy, others will react in anger. In those moments, we show them Jesus by enduring and cling to His words in Matthew 5:44, “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

3 In the way we forgive. Sin is inevitable. But because we are believers, forgiving others for sin should also be inevitable. The world is spring loaded for bitterness and revenge. The evangelistic shock of a forgiving heart is a clear demonstration of Christ at work in us. As Paul wrote, “be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:32).

4 In the way we serve. The life of Christ make His attitude visible for all to see. He selflessly, humbly and relentlessly served others. From washing their feet to preparing their food, no task was beneath the dignity of our Savior (Philippians 2). When we follow His example of humble service, the world will see Jesus at work in our lives. Jesus said, “let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

5 In the way we speak. Our words are the window to our soul (Luke 6:45). They are also the window to Christ’s work in us. Beyond the example of our lives, the gospel message we proclaim is the single most important way the world will see Jesus. “How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14). In this context, every single Christian is “the preacher.” So,“sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence” (1 Peter 3:15).

Celebrate Christmas, exalt our Savior, linger long over His word and in worship of Him. In doing so, we are “beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Today, and every other day of the year, we live between the fulfilled promise of His birth and the anticipated promise of His return. The world may not now see Jesus, but they can and must see Jesus in you.

The 12 Best Christmas Music Videos of 2015

I’m not recommending that these songs replace any of the songs in your favorite psalter hymnal. However, I’m in awe as I reflect on what God did in Bethlehem — when an army of angels interrupted the silent night to announce Christ’s birth to the shepherds. And I’m amazed at what our Heavenly Father continues to do to glorify His son — all throughout history. Truly, the King of Glory laughs from his eternal throne as Google and Facebook help spread the good news of Jesus birth during this happy season.

This week I searched all over the internet for the best new Christmas music videos, and selected 12 for this list. In order to make it onto the list, the video had to be published in recent months. Although other music videos from 2014 (or earlier) are amazing – they did not fit the criteria.  The list of videos below are my favorite (and not so favorite) new Christmas music videos from 2015. So, here they are  — like the 12 Days of Christmas — ranked from 12th to 1st, with the number one (#1) music video being my favorite new Christmas video of the year.

12 – Joy to the World – Pentatonix

This new rendition of Joy to the World, recorded in an empty church, will probably upset a few traditionalists (“They cut out all the good stuff! Why did they leave out verse 3 and why is his hair like that?”). However, with over 8.6 million views on YouTube in the past month, it’s clearly reaching a diverse crowd. “Joy to the World, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains repeat the sounding joy…” Indeed, as the Gospel of Luke reminds us: …the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

One might expect that Pentatonix, the a capella group from Arlington, TX would be ranked number 1, however, this year’s new recording didn’t have the authentic energy and lyrical purity of earlier recordings like Little Drummer Boy (2013) , or Mary Did You Know (2014). The first shall be last, and the last shall be first.

11 – The First Noel – Bethel Music

Another rendition of Noel, recorded at Bethel Church in Redding, California. Noel is derived from the French word noël or nael meaning Christmas season or Christmas carol, related to the Latin word natalis, meaning birth. The video is captioned with the familiar words: “The First Noel, the Angels did say; Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep…”

10 – A Christmas Alleluia

Chris Tomlin has four songs on the list – recorded live in a church full of people singing along. Alleluia, Christ the Savior of the world has come. This video also features the singing of Lauren Daigle and Leslie Jordan of All Sons and Daughters.

9 – Syrian Refugees – Peace on Earth

What list of Christmas songs for 2015 would be complete without this Casting Crowns rendition of Peace on Earth / I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day ? Set against the backdrop of bombs and barbwire in Syria — heart rending scenes with thousands of fleeing refugees — from the horrific civil war in Syria.

This Christmas carol is based on the 1863 American civil war poem by Longfellow. The lyrics describe the author’s despair, upon first hearing the Christmas bells: And in despair I bowed my head; “There is no peace on earth,” I said; “For hate is strong, And mocks the song of peace on earth, good-will to men!” — Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: “God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail,The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men.”

8 – Campfire Christmas – Rend Collective

The Rend Collective is described as a Northern Irish Christian experimental, folk-rock, worship band. The video provides over 28 minutes of their Campfire Christmas music, with a crackling fire to watch as you listen and sing along.

7 – Noel

Noel, Noel – Come and see what God has done. Noel, Noel – the story of amazing love, the light of the world… another great live recording from Chris Tomlin’s new Christmas album, featuring Lauren Daigle. A pure voice, loudly proclaiming the good news, with haunting piano and cello counter melodies.

6 – Adore

Adore is the title track from Chris Tomlin’s new Christmas album: Adore: Christmas Songs of Worship. This song was written by Martin Chalk and Graham Kendrick.

5 – Christmas is All in the Heart

If you like acoustic guitar, and skillful picking – you might love this Nashville style Christmas song by by Steven Curtis Chapman that mentions Charlie Brown — and reminds us that Christmas-time consumerism will not satisfy.

4 – Oh Holy Night – Hometown

A surprising new rendition of the old favorite, Oh Holy Night, from the Irish boy band – Hometown.

3 – Born in Bethlehem

Born in Bethlehem – The distinctive manly voice of  Third Day‘s Mac Powell, medieval guitar melody, and basic wood-box beat  proclaim the greatest story ever told. It’s a new recording that captures the miracle of the incarnation — resonating with good news down through the ages.

2 – Mary Did You Know

Peter Hollens sings this a capella version of Mary Did You Know  along with 5 other versions of himself. (A ‘miracle’ of modern videography.) This unique video recording gathered over 4.3 million views on YouTube since it was released on Dec. 8, 2015; along with over 22 million views on Facebook since Dec. 13.

1 – He Shall Reign Forevermore

He Shall Reign Forevermore – This song by Chris Tomlin begins with a borrowed phrase: In the bleak mid-winter and describes the groaning of all creation — frozen in darkness —  waiting for the Messiah. Enthusiastic and joyful participation by everyone at the church on the night this was recorded increase the contagious crescendo building to the chorus … He shall reign forevermore, forevermore…

Background – Why Am I Doing This?

I’m not recommending that these songs replace any of the songs in your favorite psalter hymnal. However, I’m in awe as I reflect on what God did in Bethlehem — when an army of angels interrupted the silent night to announce Christ’s birth to the shepherds. And I’m amazed at what our Heavenly Father continues to do to glorify His son — all throughout history.

Truly, the King of Glory laughs from his eternal throne as Google and Facebook help spread the good news of Jesus birth during this happy season.

Every year around Christmas time, I enjoy listening to (and singing along with) the many traditional Christmas songs.  Some of my happiest childhood Christmas memories are when my family would turn off all the lights in the house (except for the colorful Christmas tree lights) and start singing together. After sipping eggnog and eating some mints, we would grab a pillow, lay down on the floor, and watch the glittering light show on the ceiling – while singing many familiar Christmas carols.

Decades later, my family began hosting a Christmas musical (‘the Musicale’) in “the upper room” of our home a few days after Christmas. Each year the children would prepare and perform various songs on piano, guitar, or string quartet. Many of these can be found in the Vos family’s private video archives.  Ten years ago, in 2005, I wrote a new Christmas song, entitled Little Baby Boy – a ‘home music video’ – published on YouTube in 2012.  This song was inspired by my son Daniel’s translation of St. Augustine’s Christmas sermons, and recorded by Josh, my son-in-law, and subliminally influenced by Mark Lowry and Buddy Green’s Mary, Did You Know?

People have been gathering to sing Christmas carols for hundreds of years. Some enjoy singing the traditional melodies, while others enjoy creating new songs.

When locals gather to sing Christmas carols at the Blue Ball Inn pub in Worrall, England, you won’t hear “Joy to the World,” “Silent Night” or “Deck the Halls.”

The melodies and words of their carols of choice have been handed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years and are unique to this part of the world.

“They came about in the early-18th and mid-18th century, and this was a time when music in church was very plain and unadorned,” said Professor Ian Russell, a scholar who has studied Worrall’s carols extensively. While the religious establishment “wanted medieval carols, Latin carols … some sort of purity,” many worshippers had other ideas.

As a result, villagers with no formal training wrote their own music and gathered outside the church, in homes and pubs to celebrate with song. They include “Mistletoe Bough,” “Cranbrook,” and “Behold, the Grace Appears.”

“The music was extraordinary,” Russell added. “The people who were doing it were shoemakers, tailors, blacksmiths. These were not pretty carols … oh no, these are full of guts, these are full of life and vigor.”

Almost – But Not Quite

Here’s a few more new music videos that almost made the list:

O, Come Let Us Ignore Him

Seasonal Saints

There’s an irony in religious Christmas celebrations. Holiday-only worshippers really do not love Christ. Rather, they prefer the opposite—avoiding Christ as much of the year as they possibly can. Thankfully, these celebrations and worship gatherings might introduce Christ to some who are seeking Him. But, for most who just want to be a little bit religious, this long-anticipated Christmas season brings out all kinds of hypocrisy.

A holiday-only worshipper thinks that a little bit of Jesus goes a long way, and Christmas (and/or Easter) is certainly enough to pay respects to the concept.

Christmas, if such easy-going folks were honest, is a little discomfiting precisely because of Jesus. But in that this is impossible, they will do their part to keep traditions alive.

Another Jesus

“If one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached . . . you bear this beautifully (2 Cor 11:4)” Another Jesus? In fact, “yes.” Some people can handle a little bit of Jesus with a certain amount of diffidence. But others must alter their Jesus to another of their own making.

“Another Jesus” might be a Jesus who remains in a manger, or a Jesus who indulges all humans in the world even those who reject Him, or One who does not proceed from the Father and is merely human. There are lots of Christs out there to choose from.  Such people try to re-invent Jesus rather than submit to the One who said hard things and who demands more than they want to give. They don’t want the One literally raised from the dead who will one day judge the world, and who offers a way of salvation that has to be “His way or no way.” Instead, they concoct a Jesus who is more compatible with the lusts and sophistry of their own hearts.

Remade in our own image, Jesus can be attractive. And it is this Jesus of the imagination that so many can and do celebrate over Christmastime.

“O Come, Let Us Ignore Him.”
If you are one who sings to the one you run from or worships the Jesus you created in your own image, you have some choices to make. Should you stop celebrating the incarnation of the One who you don’t love or ever intend to follow? Should you just get honest about it all and end the charade?

Better than all other possible “solutions,” following the Christ you sing about would be the best. It’s a huge change, I understand, but entirely possible. Find a pastor of a Bible-teaching church or seek out a friend who actually loves and follows Christ to talk to. Read an easy-to-understand version of the New Testament about Christ and ask real questions. Seek the truth. Find a church that is serious about Him, and listen to what is being said.

Perhaps you prefer the annual hypocrisy, but I hope you will consider, this year, singing to the authentic Jesus you will now love and believe and follow regardless of the season!

Christmas is About Mankind’s Only Hope

C.S. Lewis describes the Incarnation as follows:

“One may think of a diver first reducing himself to nakedness, then glancing in mid-air, then gone with a splash, vanished, rushing down through green and warm water into black and cold water, down through the increasing pressure into the deathlike region of ooze and slime and old decay, and then back up again, back to color and light, his lungs almost bursting until suddenly he breaks the surface again, holding in his hand the dripping, precious thing he went down to recover. That dripping, precious thing is you and I, and Advent is when we celebrate his coming down to us.”

Bruce Thielemann uses the telescope on Mt. Palomar as an analogy for Christ’s coming in the flesh. That huge telescope (it takes an hour just to focus it on a particular point) draws the light of stars from across the galaxy and compresses it onto a single square-inch photographic plate. “But that is nothing compared to the way God focused himself in that baby.”

The Apostle Paul describes the reality of Christmas best of all:

“Although He existed in the form of God, (He) did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

It is beyond human comprehension how the Son of God, the Second Person of the Trinity, “emptied Himself” into human flesh and “dwelt among us,” but He did. This is the witness of Scripture, the confession of the Church, and the only hope for humankind.

Three Ways to Respond to Jesus This Christmas

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

There are three words in these verses that describe how people responded to the good news of the birth of the Savior. They are all good, and I hope that all of them will be true of you on this Christmas Day.

1. Wondering

All who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.  (Luke 2:18)

That’s a great place to begin. No doubt people were rushing through their relentless lives then as we are now. But here are the shepherds, and they say, “A Savior has been born.” And when people heard it they wondered.

The night that began with lost sinners fearing God ended with saved sinners praising God.

The people stopped. They thought. They wondered, What if that were true? What if the God of heaven has come to earth? Could it be that God is actually reaching out in love and mercy towards me?

These shepherds are saying that a Savior has been born. They say it has been announced from heaven. If what they are saying is true, it would be the greatest thing that has ever happened in our world.

If you are new to the church or new to Christianity, I hope you will start here today. “Here I am among people who say there is good news of great joy and they say it is for me! What if that is true?”

Wondering is where you begin. But don’t stop there. Some people spend their whole lives wondering, but they never make any progress. That’s why our next word is so important.

2. Treasuring

Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.  (Luke 2:19)

Mary treasured up all these things. She stored up all that had been revealed to her about Jesus. I’ve tried to picture this scene of the shepherds bearing witness to Mary of what they had seen and heard and what it must have meant to her.

The shepherds would have said, “An angel appeared to us. We saw the glory of the Lord and we were absolutely terrified! But the angel said to us, ‘Fear not.’ He said, ‘Today a Savior is born; he is Christ the Lord.’”

Mary treasured up all these things. She took them into her heart. Literally, she “put them all together.” Mary added up what was said to her by Gabriel, and then what was said by Elizabeth and now by the shepherds:

  • The angel said of the child to be born, “He is the Son of God.”
  • Elizabeth, speaking by the Holy Spirit, called him “her Lord.”
  • The shepherds report that the one who is born to Mary is “the Savior.”

Mary puts these things together. She adds them up. She looks at the child in her arms: Son of God! Lord! Savior! One testimony is added to another, each one confirming and expanding what had been revealed before.

Mary treasured up these things, and she pondered them in her heart. She stored up all she had come to know about Jesus: He is the Son of God. He is the Lord. And he is the Savior. What would it mean for this child to be my Lord?  What would it mean for him to be my Savior?

That’s how faith is born and that is how it is nurtured. You trace out the implications of what has been made known about Jesus.

If I have a Savior, that means I have hope. It means I can have peace. It means that my sins and failings are not the end. There is forgiveness for me. There is recue for me. There is hope for me in Jesus Christ.

If I have a Lord, that means I am not my own. I am not free to fritter my life away doing my own thing. I can’t say, “These are my teenage years, I’m going to do my own thing.” God has a purpose for my life, and I am accountable to him to fulfill it! There is purpose for me in Jesus Christ.

3. Praising

The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. (Luke 2:20)

They had seen the glory of God. They had heard the good news of a Savior. Now they are praising and glorifying God. The night that began with lost sinners fearing God ended with saved sinners praising God. That is a remarkable transformation, and why did it happen? Because the Savior was sent into the world.

What will be your response to the Savior Jesus Christ this Christmas Day? May it be full of wondering, treasuring, and praising him. Merry Christmas!

Blue Christmas (What to Do When the Holidays Hurt)

‘Tis the season …

For many people, these are days of magic and wonder, a time when hope rises and peace falls and where miracles begin to feel commonplace. They are moments of joyous reunions and fierce embraces and boisterous laughter and crowded tables, all accompanied by waves of easy gratitude. Christmas is, for lots of folks, a time when Goodness has the run of the house in their hearts. To them, it is sweet and possible and glittering with promise.

But you are not one of those people, and that’s what makes this season so much more difficult to endure. Your days are not merry and bright, in a time when the rest of the world’s seem to be, and so the normal cavern between you and everyone around you feels wider than usual, the isolation more severe, the disconnect greater. You seem to find estrangement everywhere you look.

Christmas is here—and Christmas hurts.

Maybe it’s because of the chairs that will be empty or the calls that won’t come or the welcome you won’t receive. Maybe it’s the way the sentimental songs amplify your loneliness or the way the picture-perfect images of blissful homes prick your tender insides or the way your shrinking family gatherings highlight the attrition you’ve experienced. It might be the effect the shorter, colder, darker days have on your fragile emotional equilibrium. Whatever the reason, a heavy yuletide melancholy has taken hold and you don’t know how to snap out of it.

Welcome.

For many of us, depression, grief and sadness hover in the background on even the most ordinary of days and we get used to battling to keep them all at bay on a regular basis. But there’s nothing quite like the holiday season to ratchet up the pressure we feel, not only to have it all together, but to wrap it in lights and tinsel and broadcast it in a heavily filtered Instagram pic. We feel more compelled than ever to feel good, and more guilty than ever to admit that we don’t.

Christmas lulls us into a parade of false comparisons. We find ourselves looking at other people’s lives from afar and using them to measure our own from up close; whether the lights on our houses or the trees adorning our living rooms, or our bank accounts or marriages or bodies or careers or families. Viewing others in the soft, flattering glow that distance yields while seeing ourselves in the raking light of close proximity means we always come up short—we always feel lacking and less than.

If you happen to be hurting this holiday season …

Let it hurt. Make peace with your pain and allow it to come fully without alteration. Life is difficult and you aren’t OK, and you shouldn’t waste precious energy and time trying to pretend this isn’t so. Let grief and sadness do the necessary, invasive work in you that they need to do. There’s no defeat in feeling defeated right now.

Don’t hide it. Give people close to you the most authentic version of yourself you are able to give. Those deserving of you will not be pushed away by your woundedness or intimidated by your honesty. Allow people who love you to bear your burdens and sit in solidarity with you. Let them see you, not some sanitized, edited version you think they can handle.

Christmas: Something Greater than the Temple is Here

See the Godhead veiled in flesh! See Jesus, our Immanuel, our “God-with-us.” Don’t let these lofty thoughts and considerations of God’s Word be solely an academic exercise that stimulates your intellect. The inseparable connection between God’s dwelling place and His glory is screaming at us that the point of the incarnation—the point of the birth of Jesus—the point of Christmas itself—is that we might behold His glory!

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of theonly begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14

Over the past two weeks, I’ve been considering Christmas according to John, as John gives us a fresh, theological look into the significance of Christmas in the opening of his Gospel. My goal has been to fight against the familiarity of Christmas and cause us to be properly affected by the glory of the incarnation as John presents it, particularly in John 1:14.

Two weeks ago, we looked at how Yahweh dwelt among His people in His tabernacle. Then, last Friday, we considered how the dwelling place of Yahweh is inseparable from His glory. We saw that first in the tabernacle, then in the temple, and finally in Jesus. And so John is proclaiming to his audience that in the same way that the glory which filled the tabernacle and temple were Yahweh’s own self-expression and the manifestation of His presence, so this Jesus is Yahweh’s own self-expression and the manifestation of His presence.

But then John goes beyond even that. “And we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father.” “Only begotten” (Gk. monogenēs) is better translated “unique,” or “One and Only.” And so when John says that this Eternal Word dwelt among us, the glory we saw wasn’t a cloud. It wasn’t a pillar of fire. It was the unique, one-and-only glory of the Father Himself. John presents Jesus, this Word-become-flesh, as the ultimate divine self-expression and the fulfillment of all the tabernacle and temple were. Now, it cannot be mistaken: the glory of thetabernacle and the temple was amazing. But in Jesus, something greater than the temple is here.

John 1:18 says that no one has seen God at any time. Paul tells us He “dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see” (1 Tim 6:16). But Jesus, who is Himself God, has explained the unseen Father (John 1:18). Literally, “He has exegeted” Him. John is announcing that Jesus Christ is the exposition of God the Father. Even Jesus Himself said it to Philip: “If you’ve seen me you’ve seen the Father” (John 14:9). Do you want to know what God is like? Look at Jesus! He is the image—the visible exhibition—of the invisible God (Col 1:15). He is the radiance of the Father’s glory and the exact representation of His nature (Heb 1:3). And in 2 Corinthians 4:6, we are told that the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God shines in the face of Christ!

This, dear friends, is what John wants us to see when we read verse 14.

  • Just as the glory of God appeared in the tabernacle (Ex 40:34–38), so now the fullest expression of God’s glory is in Jesus.
  • Just as everyone who sought God went to the tabernacle (Ex 33:7), so now everyone who seeks God must go to Jesus.
  • Just as the tabernacle was the place of condescension, where God met man (Ex 33:9), so now Jesus is where God condescends and meets man.
  • Just as the tabernacle was the place where God’s people are consecrated for service (Ex 29:43), so now Jesus is where God’s people are consecrated and sanctified.
  • Just as the tabernacle was the place where God spoke to His people (Ex 29:42, 33:9), so now in these last days God has spoken to us in His Son, Jesus.
  • Just as the tabernacle was the place where atonement for sin was made and God’s wrath was propitiated (Ex 29:42, 44), so now Jesus is where atonement is made and is where God’s anger is satisfied.
  • Just as the tabernacle was the place where Israel worshiped God (Ex 33:10), so now the “hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth” (John 4:23–24) for they will worship Him in Jesus, and in Jesus alone.

Five Reasons You Can Trust the Story of Christmas is True by J. Warner Wallace

In this Free Bible Insert J. Warner Wallace shares 5 reasons why you can trust the story of Christmas is true.  They are as follows:

1. The Supernatural Nature of the Virgin Conception Shouldn’t Disqualify It

2. The Claim of the Virgin Conception Appears Incredibly Early in Christian History

3. The Birth Narratives in Luke and Matthew are Not Late Additions

4. The Virgin Conception Was Not an Invention of Early Christians

5. The Virgin Conception Wasn’t Borrowed from Anther Source

He briefly unpacks each reason here.

How God Fulfilled His Own Promise at Christmas

Imagine nothing. It is almost impossible. But before the creation there was nothing, except God.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)

In schools, we challenge our children’s creativity by giving them materials to work with: “See what you can do with this,” we say. But there were no materials for God to work with in shaping the universe. He created all that exists out of nothing, and he sustains the universe by his own power.

Take a fresh look at what God has created today. Look at the sky; it proclaims the work of God’s hands. Listen to the birds; they testify to God’s gentle care. Every snowflake bears witness to his majesty. Every sunrise speaks of his faithfulness.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. (Psalm 19:1-3)

This majestic Creator made you. He chose to bring you into being. He has never made anyone quite like you before, and he will never make anyone quite like you again. His purpose in giving you life is that you should radiate a unique reflection of Jesus Christ forever.

Christ came so that you should be renewed in the image of your Creator (Col. 3:10)

As you fill your mind with the vastness and beauty of creation, consider this: The One who made it and sustains it lay in a manger. God took our flesh, entered our world, and lived our life. The more you think about that, the more breathtaking it gets.

God came into the world to fulfill his own promise. At the creation he said, “Let us make man in our image” (Genesis 1:26). Christ came so that you should be renewed in the image of your Creator (Colossians 3:10). Think about that: The Savior came to you so that you would reflect the beauty of God’s holiness and live in the joy of his love as you reflect the full glory of his image forever.

That’s your future in Christ. So live today in anticipation of it.

This promise could only be fulfilled be Christ who is the image of God (Colossians 1:15). The world does not see Christ’s glory. But wise men came and knelt before Jesus in adoration. They saw his glory and worshipped, as we do today.

What’s your response to this statement? “The One who made the world and sustains it lay in a manger.”

NATIVITY33“And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding…

The Magic Pill

Unfathomable Grace

How fantastic would it be to love God with every ounce of your being? Can you imagine how incredible it would be to love God so much that no idol or temptation held any sway over your heart? Wouldn’t you love to keep the First Commandment and love the Lord with all your insides and outsides? Wouldn’t you love to keep the Tenth Commandment and covet nothing other than increased experiential intimacy with and practical righteousness before Jesus Christ? Truthfully, if there were a magic pill that caused your heart to be singleminded, faithful, stable, and satisfied in Christ alone, would not you take it immediately?

Well, the bad news is this, such faithful affection and obedience is exactly that which God requires of you in his Law. Such a response to God, at all times and in all places, is required of you if you would be found self-righteous. Such is the divine expectation of…

Five Reasons You Can Trust the Story of Christmas Is True (Free Bible Insert)

Detectives create lists. As a cold-case detective, I’m no different. When investigating an event in the distant past (in my case, an unsolved murder), I collect evidence, make lists and do my best to reach the most reasonable inference. “Iran is following through on the nuclear deal it struck with a U.S.-led coalition in an utterly predictable way: It is racing to fulfill those parts of the accord that will allow it to collect $100 billion in frozen funds and end sanctions on its oil exports and banking system, while expanding its belligerent and illegal activities in other areas — and daring the West to respond. Unfortunately, the Obama administration’s response to these provocations has also been familiar. It is doing its best to downplay them — and thereby encouraging Tehran to press for still-greater advantage.”

Who said this? You might be surprised. It wasn’t Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It wasn’t one of the GOP presidential candidates. Nor was it the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal or a conservative foreign policy analyst.

Unbelief begets deception

Possessing the Treasure

by Mike Ratliff

53 When Jesus had finished these parables, He departed from there. 54 He came to His hometown and began teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? 55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, “ A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” 58 And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief. (Matthew 13:53-58 NASB)

***I looked at my “drafts” folder tonight and realized that I had 54 blog posts at some stage of being written.  I’ve committed to finish up a one for you that will hopefully be a quick and useful reference at some point. This post only has been 8+ months in the making…sigh…***

Over the past 2+ years as I was reading my eyes out and learning a boatload of information about the Renewal (Pentecostal/Charismatic/Word Faith/etc.) movement, I ran across a lot of questionable information on the internet that suffered from three common problems:

  1.    Unverifiable Citations.  As I followed up on some quotes and claims, I found that many of them were either unable to be substantiated or questionably fabrications (I explain this problem in a full post here).  Because of that, I made a point of trying to stick to print resources in my research.  This ruled…

TMS: The Peculiar Glory of the Incarnation

It is a joy to reserve this part of the year to remember and celebrate the birth of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. This, of course, is what Christmas is about in the truest sense. Amid all the tinsel, the gingerbread cookies, and the trees and stockings and gift shopping, true Christians pause to reorient our thoughts and our affections to what Christmas is really about: the incarnation of the Son of God.

And that kind of theological shorthand has become so familiar to us that we cease to be amazed at the truth we speak of when we speak of the incarnation. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.” “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us.”

God. Becoming man. The infinite, eternal, self-existent, self-sufficient, almighty God, without shedding His divine nature, taking upon Himself—in addition to His divine nature—a human nature—truly becoming one of us. In the incarnation of the Son of God, it can properly be said that the immutable, unchangeable God became what He wasn’t, while never ceasing to be what He was.

The incomprehensibility of that thought alone is sufficient to bow our hearts and intellects before divine wisdom in worship. This kind of mind-bending wisdom is so lofty—so far beyond our natural understanding—that we wouldn’t believe it if Scripture didn’t teach it so plainly.

We already referenced John 1: The Word was God, and the Word became flesh. We also see it in Philippians 2:6–7, where Paul tells us that while Christ was existing in His very nature as God nevertheless assumed to Himself the very nature of a servant, and was born as a man.

You see, the Lord Jesus Christ did not come into being at the incarnation; He existed for all eternity as God Himself—the Second Person of the Holy Trinity—God the Son. And so as God, He shares all the attributes of God: infinity, eternality, omniscience, immutability; everything that properly belongs to the nature of God the Father belongs to the nature of God the Son, for they share the very same nature, the same essence, the same being. And yet, God the Son became man! Again, becoming what He wasn’t while never ceasing to be what He was.

The Irish Reformer, James Ussher, said of the incarnation that it is “the highest pitch of God’s wisdom, goodness, power, and glory.” Pastor and author, Mark Jones, said, “The incarnation is God’s greatest wonder, one that no creature could ever have imagined. God himself could not perform a more difficult and glorious work. It has justly been called the miracle of all miracles” (Knowing Christ, 25).

If we’re honest, and if we can slow our minds down and turn our thinking from the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season to truth, we’re forced to admit that there is a peculiar glory of this greatest of God’s miracles—that, among all the amazing works that Almighty God has accomplished in this world, the incarnation has a special luster of magnificence.

And I think the reason for that peculiar glory is that the incarnation takes two things of an infinite difference and distance, and puts them side by side. The incarnation takes the infinite God, and the finite man, and unites them together in One magnificent Person. And it’s the juxtaposition of the majesty of God with the humility of man that renders the glory of the Lord Jesus—the glory of the incarnation—more especially brilliant than all other of God’s glorious works.

Jonathan Edwards once preached a sermon on Christ as the Lion and the Lamb from Revelation 5, entitled “The Admirable Conjunction of Diverse Excellencies in Christ Jesus,” a title packed with significance. It is to say that in Christ, there is a joining together of attributes and qualities that are significantly different from one another, and this conjunction of diverse excellencies, Edwards said, is admirable. By its very nature, it evokes admiration. Praise. Wonder. Delight. Amazement. Worship. We struggle even to put it into words, but the conjunction of diverse excellencies in Christ is glorious. And there is no greater display of that glory than in the incarnation, because it is only by the incarnation that such a conjunction is even made possible.

And so I want to briefly reflect on this admirable conjunction of diverse excellencies in Christ, to set these contrasting glories side by side. My hope is that as you meditate on these diverse excellencies, they will stir you to consider Christ in this Christmas season, in all His admirable glory as the God-man, the Word made flesh.

*     *     *     *     *

Consider that the uncreated Creator (John 1:1–3; Col 1:16) in a manner of speaking was created (i.e., with respect to His human nature); He was born (Gal 4:4–5; John 1:14). Luther contemplated this truth and was catapulted to worship. He wrote: “All praise to Thee, eternal God, / Who, clothed in garb of flesh and blood, / Dost take a manger for Thy throne, / While worlds on worlds are Thine alone. Hallelujah.” Augustine marveled in simplicity as he considered, “Man’s maker was made man.”

Consider that the Sustainer of all things, who at all times upholds all things by the Word of His power (Heb 1:3), the One in whom all things hold together (Col 1:17), was Himself being sustained in the womb and at the breast of a Hebrew maiden. Mark Jones reflects, “Jesus drank from his mother’s breasts and Jesus provided his mother with the milk to feed him” (Knowing Christ, 32).

Consider that the infinite God was clothed in finite humanity. The eternal (Micah 5:2; 2 Tim 1:9; Titus 1:2) stepped into time. The immense and omnipresent One who filled all space and time, whom the highest heavens cannot contain (1 Kgs 8:27), confined Himself to the single space of Mary’s womb, and then the cattle’s trough, and then Calvary’s cross, and then Joseph’s grave.

The immutable One who is perfect and so could not change either for the better or for the worse, (Mal 3:6) nevertheless increased in stature (Luke 2:52). The perfect One was made perfect (Heb 5:9).

The omniscient One who knew all men (John 2:24–25) and all things (John 16:30; 21:17), the One in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Col 2:3), increased in wisdom (Luke 2:52), learned obedience through His sufferings (Heb 5:8), and submitted Himself to a measured ignorance (Mark 13:32).

The omnipotent One (Job 42:2), the source of all strength (Neh 8:10), who commanded the winds and waves with a word (Luke 8:25), knew what it was to grow weary (John 4:6). The God who neither slumbers nor sleeps (Ps 121:4), slept (Luke 8:23).

The perfectly blessed One (Rom 9:5), possessed of infinite joy (Heb 1:9) and impassible, was a man of sorrows (Isa 53:3), experienced the trouble of soul (John 12:27), breathed the sighs of grief (Mark 8:12), wept at death (John 11:35), and mourned over man’s sin (Matt 23:37).

Consider that the One who was rich, enjoying the heavenly worship of the saints and angels, nevertheless for your sakes became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich (2 Cor 8:9). The One who owned the cattle on a thousand hills (Ps 50:10), whose Father’s house has many mansions (John 14:2), nevertheless had no place to lay His head (Luke 9:58).

Consider that the bread of life come down from heaven, who out of His infinite fullness satisfies the hunger of every soul who feasts upon Him (John 6:35), knew what it was to became hungry (Matt 4:2; 21:18). The fountain of living waters (Jer 2:13) who invited the thirsty to come to Him and drink (John 7:37–38) and never be thirsty again (John 4:13–14), knew what it was to become thirsty (John 19:28).

Consider that the Truth (John 14:6) was falsely accused of bearing false witness (Mark 14:56–59). The Healer who virtually banished disease from Israel in His ministry (Matt 8–9) bore our griefs (Isa 53:4) and was wounded for our transgressions (Isa 53:5) .

Consider that the Majestic King of kings (1 Tim 6:15; Rev 17:14; 19:16), worthy of all honor and glory, was mocked, spat on, and beaten (Matt 26:67–68). Man’s Judge (John 5:22, 27; Acts 17:31) was judged by man to be deserving of death (Mark 14:64).

The Author of Life (John 1:4; 5:26) died (Acts 3:15).

The fountain of all blessedness, infinitely worthy of all blessing (Matt 3:17; Heb 7:26), became a curse for us (Gal 3:13).

*     *     *     *     *

And all of this was for us. The incarnation was designed to bridge the infinite chasm between God and man that existed by nature—insofar as God is by nature infinitely higher than man—but also which was doubly compounded by our sin. Man had sinned against God, and so man must make atonement for sin. But we are absolutely powerless to do so! Only God can atone for sin! And yet only man’s sacrifice would be accepted on behalf of man. And so in the infinite, marvelous wisdom of God, God became man!

For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time (1 Tim 2:5–6).

Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. For assuredly He does not give help to angels, but He gives help to the descendant of Abraham. Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people (Heb 2:14–17).

This admirable conjunction of diverse excellencies in Christ was designed to rescue you from the sin which enslaves you. If you do not know the Christ of Christmas—this admirable Savior in whom this peculiar glory of juxtaposed perfections is displayed—I urge you to turn from your sins and trust in Him for your righteousness. I urge you to receive the best Christmas gift you’ll ever get: Christ Himself (2 Cor 9:15).

*     *     *     *     *

Stephen Charnock wrote, “What a wonder that two natures infinitely distant should be more intimately united than anything in the world . . . that the same person should have both a glory and a grief; an infinite joy in the Deity, and an inexpressible sorrow in the humanity; that a God upon a throne should be an infant in a cradle; the thundering Creator be a weeping babe and a suffering man; [the incarnation astonishes] men upon earth, and angels in heaven” (Works, 2:150).

Dear Christian, does it still astonish you?

Can you slow down the holiday hustle and bustle long enough to let your mind ponder these astonishing truths? to let the eyes of your heart fix their gaze upon the glory of the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ?

My prayer for you this Christmas is that you would do just that. That you would take these truths and turn them over in your mind—like Mary, to treasure these things and ponder them in your heart (cf. Luke 2:19). And that your heart would be stirred to worship God in Christ for the peculiar glory of the incarnation. For then, and only then, are you truly celebrating Christmas.
