Stories Of Despair From The Forgotten People That The U.S. Economy Has Left Behind

Forgotten - Public DomainThere is so much economic despair in our country today, but if you have a good job and if you live in a good neighborhood you might not ever encounter it.  There really are “two Americas” in 2016, and they are getting farther and farther apart with each passing year.  On the one hand, you have lots of people smiling in New York City these days because of the stock market boom, and property values have soared to ridiculous levels in San Francisco because of the tech bubble.  But in between the two coasts there are vast stretches of forgotten people that the U.S. economy has left behind.  In this article I am going to share some of their stories with you. Earth Changes In 2016? How To Get Prepared For The Coming Earthquakes And Volcanic Eruptions

Four Horsemen - Public DomainAll over the world seismic activity is increasing.  In recent weeks we have seen a dramatic earthquake in Ecuador, more than 600 earthquakes have experts extremely alarmed about what is happening to Japan’s southern Island, and 37 volcanoes around the planet are erupting right now.  Most of the large earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that we have witnessed lately have come along the Ring of Fire, which is an area of seismic instability which roughly encircles the Pacific Ocean.  Fortunately the west coast of the United States has been spared so far, but scientists tell us that tension has been building up along the San Andreas fault and the Cascadia Subduction Zone for decades, and they assure us that it is only a matter of time before we see a major event.  What that day arrives, will you be prepared? Hundreds of Trillions in Flaky Financial Instruments – What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

There are five “too big to fail” banks in the United States that each have more than $40 trillion in exposure to derivatives (four of them actually have over $50 trillion in exposure). It should be noted that the “official” US national debt is sitting at a grand total of about $17.7 trillion. (If unfunded liabilities are included, the actual national debt is about $75 trillion.) So, ponder the derivatives exposure of these five big banks, which is for each of them more than two or three times the size of the total “official” US government indebtedness.

And unlike stocks and bonds, these derivatives do not represent “investments” in anything. They are essentially just highly leveraged (i.e., 100 to 1 or more) paper wagers about what will happen in the future. Trading in derivatives is basically just a form of legalized gambling, and the “too big to fail” banks have transformed Wall Street into the largest casino in history. When this derivatives bubble bursts, the entire world financial system will collapse.

These “too big to fail” banks run up enormous profits from their derivatives trading. According to the New York Times, US banks “have nearly $280 trillion of derivatives on their books” in spite of the fact that the financial crisis of 2008 was triggered by – indeed, was all about derivatives. With nearly $280 trillion of derivatives on their books, they earn huge profits (i.e., many billions of dollars) from trading in them. This incredible derivatives binge (which has grown dramatically since 2008) is driven by raw, unadulterated greed within the big banks, which have sophisticated computer models that are supposed to keep the system stable and help them manage these risks.

But all computer models are based on assumptions. And all of those assumptions were originally made by computer quants. When a “black swan event” comes along, such as a 9/11-type terror attack, a war, a major pandemic, an apocalyptic natural disaster, or a collapse of a very large financial institution, these models can (and very likely will) break down very rapidly (i.e., in minutes).

10 Cravings of the Sinful Nature

What are the cravings of the sinful nature? What kinds of strong desire does the sinful nature produce? What does the intense longing that comes from your sinful nature look like?

Here are 10 examples. You’ll recognize them immediately.

1.  When you are blessed, the sinful nature produces pride: The sinful nature wants to take the credit.

2. When others succeed, the sinful nature produces envy: The sinful nature says, “It should have been me.”

3. When you do something good, the sinful nature is self-righteous: It says, “Look what I did!”

4. When you do something wrong, the sinful nature goes into denial: The sinful nature says, “It wasn’t me!”

5. When you suffer, the sinful nature indulges in self pity.

6. When you don’t get what you want, the sinful nature gets irritable, frustrated, and angry.

7. When your work is not recognized or appreciated, the sinful nature gets resentful.

8. When you are in a conflict the sinful nature produces self-justification: It says, “I’m right!”

9. When you hear about the love of God, the sinful nature produces unbelief: It will say, “That can’t be true!”

10. When you hear what the Bible says about sin, the sinful nature responds with evasion. Thinking about the sin of others do you think, “Well, I wouldn’t have done that. I’m better than that.” Guess where that comes from?

The list goes on and on, so learn to detect the voice of the sinful nature. Learn to read your heart and predict where your sinful nature will go.

  • If the fires have burned low in your marriage, expect your sinful nature to produce thoughts about divorce. Something within you will say, “You deserve better than this. There must be another person out there for you.”
  • If you are discouraged in ministry, expect the sinful nature to produce thoughts about quitting. The sinful nature will say, “You deserve better than this. There’s something else you could do.” The sinful nature will always produce these cravings, strong desires, and intense longings.

The Christian life is a sustained battle against the constant impulses of sin that rise from the sinful nature. If you are a Christian, your sin is forgiven, but it has not yet been expelled. You are now involved in a lifelong struggle, with the help of the Spirit of God, against the desires of the sinful nature.

Which of these ten is the biggest struggle for you? Which do you think is the most tragic?

4 Ways the Enemy Pulls Us into Recurrent Sins

Many believers struggle with sins that continue to haunt them, even when they fight hard to gain victory. Satan and his forces delight when Christians keep losing that battle. Perhaps understanding better what the enemy does will help us say “No” to his next attempt to lure us across the sin line:

  1. He attacks us in our aloneness. It’s not a surprise that sins we often struggle with are hidden sins. It’s chasing pornographic images when nobody’s watching. It’s cursing when nobody’s listening. It’s committing adultery, but only through sneaking around. It’s thinking about how important and talented we are, but doing so only in the privacy of our minds. It’s plagiarizing a sermon, trusting that nobody will ever find out. It’s separating ourselves from the people of God, seeking to avoid any conviction that might call us to repentance. Secrets almost always = the enemy’s victory.
  2. He turns our attention to the temporary and emphasizes the fun of sin. That’s the nature of sin: the temporary pleasures of the moment overshadow any future consequences. The fruit hanging from the forbidden tree captures our attention, even though we usually know that any pleasure it brings will be only fleeting. That’s also why some sins become recurrent and domineering in our lives – the temporary “fun” of sin leaves us only wanting more (it NEVER fully satisfies), and we return to it again and again.
  3. He camouflages the consequences of our choices. Adam died after he ate the fruit in the Garden of Eden, but it was 900+ years later; it’s the enemy who still says to us today, “If there are any consequences to your sin, they’ll be so far in the future that it won’t matter.” You’ve probably heard his voice in your ear with that same message. “Go ahead, it won’t hurt you.” “You’ve done it before, and it didn’t cost you anything.” “Nobody will know.” “You’ve gotten away with it before without any consequences.”
  4. He mis-magnifies the grace of God. I suspect this tactic may surprise you. Of course, Satan doesn’t like our teaching the grace of God by which He saves us. The enemy delights, though, when we bank on the grace of God as permission to continue in our sin. “God will forgive you anyway, so what’s the big deal?” he asks. We buy into his false teaching, continue to live in sin, and wrongly assume that God’s abundant grace gives us clearance to sin abundantly.

If you’re caught in recurrent sins, recognize what the enemy’s doing – and turn back to God.

In Order That You May Know – “What does biblical assurance look like? Can we spot the evidence of true faith and the Spirit’s sanctifying work in our lives? And how do we know what to look for? The apostle John’s first epistle is devoted to answering those very questions. Surely no other passage of Scripture confronts the false promises of no-lordship theology with more force than this brief but potent letter. John’s purpose statement is explicit: ‘These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life’ (1 John 5:13, emphasis added). There the apostle spells out his intention. He is not trying to make believers doubt; he wants them to have full assurance. What he has to say will not shake genuine believers; though it should certainly alarm those with a false sense of assurance.”

The Two Kinds of Conversation You Need To Have With Your Children – “Over the course of my years of parenting, I have picked up advice from a hundred different sources. Like most parents I have read a few books on parenting, some of them general works and some of them targeted at specific joys or challenges. I have read a lot of blog posts and other articles addressing one angle or the other. Of course I’ve been challenged by the Bible through personal study and sermons. And then there are those personal one-on-one conversations with other parents where I have asked them questions or they have volunteered counsel. I remain a firm advocate of saying to people, ‘I’d like my children to be like yours. Tell me what you’ve learned along the way.’”

Jen Hatmaker: “Christians should open wide their churches to LGBT community” – “So many Christian women who love the Lord are very upset with me for warning them about Jen Hatmaker. Yes, I know, Jen is the lovable mom, writer and speaker who is known for being “Raw and Real.” Apparently she says what women think, or wish they could say, and she tells a lot of great, emotional stories. But if we judge her fruit (that’s her doctrine, ladies; not her social works) against the truth of Scripture, we find that underneath that sweet funny rawness of hers is a wolf who is luring women by the hundreds of thousands into the maw of deception. Is that unloving of me? No!”

4 concerns about Jen Hatmaker’s teachings – “It’s no surprise to me that last week’s book review post, ‘7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess’ by Jen Hatmaker, received a mixed response. Along with the many women who thanked me for posting the review, a number were also upset that I would dare to question anything about this popular speaker and teacher. Let me clear up one thing: the review was a warning not against the woman, but about how she is handling God’s Word to an international audience. In addition to her numerous books (often used as ‘Bible’ studies in women’s ministries), Jen Hatmaker is known for her presentations at a women’s gathering called ‘IF’, which I’ve warned about in the past.”

“Woman, just try harder!” – “When I first heard the Gospel and believed, I knew I was washed clean and forgiven. But I didn’t have anyone who really understood the full and complete Gospel to disciple me. Nor did my husband. We had just come out of the Catholic system and were on our second or third seekermergent church (hey, we liked the music!), when the Lord graciously opened our eyes to the Scriptures and the truth of who He is – and who we aren’t! Still, without proper discipleship, we got caught up in all the glitz and programs of today’s celebrity-driven church ‘bible’ studies.”

The Least Attended Church Gathering

Nick Batzig:

God has ordered things in His church in such a way that prayer is one of the foremost means by which He gives His people spiritual power and vitality for the advancement of His Kingdom through the preaching of the Gospel and the carrying out of deeds of love and mercy. So why does the church in the Western world fail so miserably at coming to the throne of grace in order to receive the grace and mercy needed on a daily and weekly basis (Heb. 4:16)? I would offer the following 4 reasons.

The Bread Looks Different Today Than it Did Yesterday

Michael Kelley:

But homemade bread is different. Sometimes it’s a bit saltier; sometimes it doesn’t rise quite right; sometimes the crust is thicker than the day before. That’s because a machine didn’t make this kind of bread. Instead, it’s personalized. It’s touched, kneaded, and baked by hand, and so what comes out of the oven is not a complete carbon copy of what came out of the oven yesterday.

That’s not to say it’s not still bread; it certainly is. It has the same qualities; the same ingredients. But the end product is always going to be unique from yesterday.

Our Time is Short

Read: Recommitting Your Life To God and Jesus Christ – Restoration and Forgiveness With God and Jesus Christ (Updated Version)

What is The Gospel?

God made everything out of nothing, including you and me. His main purpose in creation was to bring him pleasure.

The chief way in which we as humanity do this is through loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

Instead of this, we have sinned against our loving Creator and acted in high-handed rebellion.

God has vowed that he will righteously and lovingly judge sinners with eternal death.

But God, being merciful, loving, gracious, and just, sent his own son, Jesus Christ, in the likeness of man to live as a man; fulfilling his perfect requirements in the place of sinners; loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

And further, his son bore the eternal judgment of God upon the cross of Calvary, as he satisfied the eternal anger of God, standing in the place of sinners. God treated Jesus as a sinner, though he was perfectly sinless, that he might declare sinners as perfect.

This glorious transaction occurs as the sinner puts their faith (dependence, trust) in the Lord Jesus Christ as their substitute. God then charges Christ’s perfection to the sinner, and no longer views him as an enemy but instead an adopted son covered in the perfect righteousness of his son.

God furnished proof that this sacrifice was accepted by raising Jesus from the dead.

God will judge the world in righteousness and all of those who are not covered in the righteousness of Christ, depending on him for forgiveness, will be forced to stand on their own to bear the eternal anger of God.

Therefore, all must turn from sin and receive Christ Jesus as Lord.

What Is the Gospel?

There is no greater message to be heard than that which we call the gospel. But as important as that is, it is often given to massive distortions or over simplifications. People think they’re preaching the gospel to you when they tell you, ‘you can have a purpose to your life’, or that ‘you can have meaning to your life’, or that ‘you can have a personal relationship with Jesus.’ All of those things are true, and they’re all important, but they don’t get to the heart of the gospel.

The gospel is called the ‘good news’ because it addresses the most serious problem that you and I have as human beings, and that problem is simply this: God is holy and He is just, and I’m not. And at the end of my life, I’m going to stand before a just and holy God, and I’ll be judged. And I’ll be judged either on the basis of my own righteousness–or lack of it –or the righteousness of another. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus lived a life of perfect righteousness, of perfect obedience to God, not for His own well being but for His people. He has done for me what I couldn’t possibly do for myself. But not only has He lived that life of perfect obedience, He offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice to satisfy the justice and the righteousness of God.

The great misconception in our day is this: that God isn’t concerned to protect His own integrity. He’s a kind of wishy-washy deity, who just waves a wand of forgiveness over everybody. No. For God to forgive you is a very costly matter. It cost the sacrifice of His own Son. So valuable was that sacrifice that God pronounced it valuable by raising Him from the dead – so that Christ died for us, He was raised for our justification. So the gospel is something objective. It is the message of who Jesus is and what He did. And it also has a subjective dimension. How are the benefits of Jesus subjectively appropriated to us? How do I get it? The Bible makes it clear that we are justified not by our works, not by our efforts, not by our deeds, but by faith–and by faith alone. The only way you can receive the benefit of Christ’s life and death is by putting your trust in Him–and in Him alone. You do that, you’re declared just by God, you’re adopted into His family, you’re forgiven of all of your sins, and you have begun your pilgrimage for eternity.

The Gospel In A Nutshell

Now, with regard to this rule of faith—that we may from this point acknowledge what it is which we defend—it is, you must know, that which prescribes the belief that there is one only God, and that He is none other than the Creator of the world, who produced all things out of nothing through His own Word, first of all sent forth; that this Word is called His Son, and, under the name of God, was seen “in diverse manners” by the patriarchs, heard at all times in the prophets, at last brought down by the Spirit and Power of the Father into the Virgin Mary, was made flesh in her womb, and, being born of her, went forth as Jesus Christ; thenceforth He preached the new law and the new promise of the kingdom of heaven, worked miracles; having been crucified, He rose again the third day; (then) having ascended into the heavens, He sat at the right hand of the Father; sent instead of Himself the Power of the Holy Ghost to lead such as believe; will come with glory to take the saints to the enjoyment of everlasting life and of the heavenly promises, and to condemn the wicked to everlasting fire, after the resurrection of both these classes shall have happened, together with the restoration of their flesh. This rule, as it will be proved, was taught by Christ, and raises amongst ourselves no other questions than those which heresies introduce, and which make men heretics.

Tertullian, “On Prescription Against Heretics,” Chapter XIIl

Ravi Zacharias explains the gospel in two minutes:

The Gospel on 5 Fingers

Can you explain the gospel in 30 seconds? In one minute? In five minutes? Here’s one way I have found helpful. The five main components of the gospel can be remembered on 5 fingers of one hand. Here they are:

1) Jesus’ birth
2) Jesus’ life
3) Jesus’ death
4) Jesus’ resurrection
5) Jesus’ ascension

Obviously each point can be elaborated on depending on how much time you have. Here’s the short version:

1) Jesus’ birth – Jesus, God himself, the creator of the universe, the Messiah, became a human being – took on flesh, and was born of a virgin.

2) Jesus’ life – Jesus lived a life of perfect obedience to his Father. Though he was tempted in every way as we are, he never once sinned.

3) Jesus’ death – on the cross, Jesus himself took all our sins and paid for them. God the father counted all our sins to Jesus as if he himself had personally committed them. Then Jesus bore God’s wrath towards sin – the punishment we deserved – as a substitute for us.

4) Jesus’ resurrection – within 3 days, Jesus rose physically from the dead, proving that his sacrifice for sins have been accepted by God, since the punishment for sin was death. Jesus was seen by numerous people after he rose including 500 at one time (1 Corinthians 15).

5) Jesus’ ascension – Jesus ascended physically into heaven where he reigns as King of kings and Lord of lords. And someday he will return to the earth.

That’s the gospel, the good news, and if we believe in Jesus Christ and this good news and call upon him he will save us from our sins and give us eternal life.

That’s a simple way to remember the gospel – five fingers. Even a child can do it. So ask God to give you opportunities to share his good news today.

Ready to start your new life with God?

Who do you think that I am?

With that brief question Jesus Christ confronted His followers with the most important issue they would ever face. He had spent much time with them and made some bold claims about His identity and authority. Now the time had come for them either to believe or deny His teachings.

Who do you say Jesus is? Your response to Him will determine not only your values and lifestyle, but your eternal destiny as well.

The Perseverance (Security) of the Saints

Notice all the Scripture references!

It is not just a handful of texts that teach the perseverance of the saints: the entire gospel sustains and confirms it. The Father has chosen them before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4), ordained them to eternal life (Acts 13:48), to be conformed to the image of his Son (Rom. 8:29). This election stands (Rom. 9:11; Heb. 6:17) and in due time carries with it the calling and justification and glorification (Rom. 8:30). Christ, in whom all the promises of God are Yes and Amen (2 Cor. 1:20), died for those who were given him by the Father (John 17:6, 12) in order that he might give them eternal life and not lose a single one of them (6:40; 17:2); he therefore gives them eternal life and they will never be lost in all eternity; no one will snatch them out of his hand (6:39; 10:28).

The Holy Spirit who regenerates them remains eternally with them (14:16) and seals them for the day of redemption (Eph. 1:13; 4:30). The covenant of grace is firm and confirmed with an oath (Heb. 6:16–18; 13:20), unbreakable like a marriage (Eph. 5:31–32), like a testament (Heb. 9:17), and by virtue of that covenant, God calls his elect. He inscribes the law upon their inmost being, puts his fear in their heart (Heb. 8:10; 10:14ff.), will not let them be tempted beyond their strength (1 Cor. 10:13), confirms and completes the good work he has begun in them (1 Cor. 1:9; Phil. 1:6), and keeps them for the return of Christ to receive the heavenly inheritance (1 Thess. 5:23; 2 Thess. 3:3; 1 Pet. 1:4–5).

In his intercession before the Father, Christ acts in such a way that their faith may not fail (Luke 22:32), that in the world they may be kept from the evil one (John 17:11, 20), that they may be saved for all times (Heb. 7:20), that their sins will be forgiven them (1 John 2:1), and that they may all be where he is to behold his glory (John 17:24). The benefits of Christ, which the Holy Spirit imparts to them, are all irrevocable (Rom. 11:29). Those who are called are also glorified (8:30). Those who are adopted as children are heirs of eternal life (8:17; Gal. 4:7). Those who believe have eternal life already here and now (John 3:16). That life itself, being eternal, cannot be lost. It cannot die since it cannot sin (1 John 3:9). Faith is a firm ground (Heb. 11:1), hope is an anchor (6:19) and does not disappoint us (Rom. 5:5), and love never ends (1 Cor. 13:8).
