Sanctifying the Mount
How can such a sacred place be such an unholy mess? Instead of a unique place of worship, it is the scene of endless confrontations – between Jews and Arabs no less than among Jews. Instead of being an inspiration for piety, it is the focus of a turf war over who can worship where, from Muslims denying Jews access to the Temple Mount above, to ultra-Orthodox Jews denying the non-Orthodox access to the Western Wall below.

Scientists Explain Why It Is Inevitable That America Will Be Hit By Absolutely Monstrous Earthquakes

Plate Tectonics - USGSHave you noticed that the crust of the Earth is starting to become a lot more unstable?  Over the past couple of months, major earthquakes have shaken areas all over the planet and major volcanoes have been erupting with a frequency that is more than just a little bit startling.  Here in the United States, the state of Oklahoma absolutely shattered their yearly record for quakes last year, we just saw a very disturbing earthquake right along the New Madrid fault just recently, and as you will see below one scientist is telling us that the San Andreas fault in southern California “looks like it’s locked, loaded and ready to go”. The Next Employment Crisis Is Here: Job Cuts At U.S. Companies Jump 35 Percent In April

Layoffs - Public DomainShould we be alarmed that the number of job cuts announced by large U.S. companies was 35 percent higher in April than it was in March?  This is definitely a case where the trend is not our friend.  According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, U.S. firms announced 65,141 job cuts during April, which represented a massive 35 percent increase over the previous month.  And so far this year overall, job cut announcements are running 24 percent higher than for the exact same period in 2015.  Meanwhile, on Thursday we learned that initial claims for unemployment benefits shot up dramatically last week.  In fact, the jump of 17,000 was the largest increase that we have seen in over a year.  Of course the U.S. economy has been slowing down for quite a while now, and many have been wondering when we would begin to see that slowdown reflected in the employment numbers.  Well, that day has now arrived. Community Organizer Barack Obama Says Donald Trump’s Long Record ‘Needs To Be Examined’

Obama: Donald Trump’s record ‘needs to be examined’

President Barack Obama on Friday said the presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has a “long record that needs to be examined” and insisted that the race for the White House is “not a reality show.”

“I just want to emphasize the degree to which we are in serious times,” Obama said from the White House briefing room after delivering remarks on the economy. “This is a contest for the presidency of the United States.”

Now isn’t that interesting? Barack Obama, the man who started his campaign for the presidency in the living room of a domestic terrorist says that Donald Trump ‘needs to be examined’. The man who promised the ‘most transparent administration in US history‘ and then sealed his own college transcripts. The man who claims to be a Christian, yet runs the most unGodly administration in US history.

So let’s take a moment, 12:12 to be exact, and lets ‘examine’ the lies, subterfuge and obfuscation of the Muslim-raised Barack Hussein Obama.

65 Outrageous Lies by President Obama:

There has not been a shadier, more duplicitous American president than Barack Obama. He has put America in a hole so deep that we likely will never climb out of it. Ten trillion in debt added in less than 7 years in office, as bad as that is, is not the worst of what he has done.

Barack Obama Lies To America:

Donald Trump as president will go a long way to erasing our National mistake of twice-electing a Marxist Muslim.

Make America Great Again.

The Scriptural Necessity of Christ’s Penal Substitution – “This introductory essay overviews the indispensable theme of Christ’s penal substitution on Golgotha’s cross. The subject unfolds in two parts; the first section provides background and context for this essential theological truth. The second section reasons that three compelling biblical necessities require a true believer in Jesus Christ to understand scripturally and accept the Savior’s penal substitution on behalf of redeemed sinners, especially oneself.”

The Rise of the Anti-Culture – “Is the culture war over? Or, to use less martial language, is Christian cultural engagement at an end? At the risk of depriving a rapidly shrinking handful of old-school Republicans and countless trendy Christian blog pundits of their reason to exist, I believe the answer is yes. It is over. For to engage a culture there must first be a culture to engage. And, as the ever-incisive Anthony Esolen has pointed out on numerous occasions we no longer have a culture. What we really have is an anti-culture.”

Preaching Points: The Pull of the Punch Line – “Johnny Carson hosted the “Tonight Show” for 30 years from 1962 to 1992. Known for his droll wit, urbane manner and his impeccably timed delivery of a punch line, Carson still holds a major influence on comedians and certainly every late-night talk show host. Carson knew how to tell a joke. Preachers, however, are no Carson and should not tell jokes in a sermon.”

The Wrath of God Was Satisfied: Substitutionary Atonement and the Conservative Resurgence in the Southern Baptist Convention – “Current controversy over the nature of Christ’s atonement for sin points to a truth many younger evangelicals may not know, i.e., the substitutionary nature of Christ’s death on the cross was a major issue in the Conservative Resurgence that took place within the Southern Baptist Convention in the last quarter of the twentieth century.”

If that isn’t enough, another SBC favorite, Rick Warren, is also getting revelations from God!
Gary Gilley tells us about the “gospel” Rick Warren teaches.
Six years ago I wrote an article exposing the abuse, by way too many Christians, of 2 Chronicles 7:14.  Well, here we come to the annual “National Day of Prayer,” which gets major abuse of this passage, and I am thrilled to see someone else expose the nonsensical abuse of this passage.

Reaction to the Supreme Court Decision on Same-Sex Marriage, Russell MooreThere has been (and will continue to be) a lot of commentary coming on the heels of last June’s landmark Supreme Court decision, in which the Court voted 5-4 to make same-sex marriage legal nationwide. Moore offers a helpful perspective as we enter a new chapter in America. There is cause for concern, but much more cause for hope.

7 Things to Do After You Look at PornographyPaul Maxwell. Most of us are aware that the act of looking at pornography is sinful. But the battle against sin continues well after the lustful looks. In fact, the immediate moments after indulging in sexual sin might be the most important of all. They can be an opportunity for the Enemy to sure up his victory, or an opportunity to let grace begin to heal you. These are 7 tangible ways to choose grace.

7 Reasons Not to Play the LotteryJohn Piper. I have long had misgivings about the lottery. (It was a regular part of my Pennsylvania childhood, though it’s more recent here in NC.) But he’s got 6 other reasons that the lottery is a scourge and a shame on our country. Read up.

7 Ways to Keep Your Wife Beautiful for LifeBrad Hambrick. As a society, we place far too much emphasis on physical beauty, particularly for women. The Christian response to this shouldn’t be to pretend that beauty means nothing, but to re-capture the idea of beauty, to show the world what true attractiveness really is. Hambrick gives some very helpful tips for cultivating the kind of beauty that matters in the home.

Stop Calling Your Wife Hot

Barnabas Piper:

Fellas, calling your wife hot to other people is awkward. We can’t agree with you. That would be really weird. We can’t disagree with you. That would be really mean. Ignoring you is rude, but it’s probably our best option in this case. Do you really want us trying to determine if your wife is, in fact, hot? I’m glad you think she’s a 10. You should. But calling attention to her hotness doesn’t honor her as much as it creates an opportunity for others to judge. And that’s just awkward.

The Wisdom of God in the Frustration of Man

Jon Bloom:

Now in God’s wisdom he is letting human technological advancement move at a dizzying pace, in spite of the language, culture, geographical, political, and economic obstacles. Why? Beyond what is revealed in Scripture, we, like our ancient ingenious ancestors, do not yet know. But what we who believe Scripture do know is that God can be trusted in these matters. With thousands of years of retrospect, we know more than ever that the wisest thing we can do is to trust God’s promises and purposes far more than our shortsighted perceptions.

Dear Children’s Minister

Mark Dance:

Every church has someone who is in charge of the children’s ministry, regardless of where they are on the org chart or payroll. They are not in it for the money or the glory. They obviously love Jesus and our kids – so I’m going to love them back today through this letter, which I hope you will make sure they get.

The Rise of the Anti-Culture

Carl Trueman writes something that deserves consideration:

Let’s face it: We now live in a world where refusing a man the right to expose himself in a woman’s toilet is enough to risk your city losing the right to host a football game. Even to suggest there might be a debate to be had about such a thing is enough to render one liable to accusations of irrational hatred and dismissal as a benighted bigot. Culture did not bring that about. Anti-culture did—the wholesale repudiation of the past and its institutions and interdicts, and a Devil-may-care attitude to the future.

What is The Gospel?

God made everything out of nothing, including you and me. His main purpose in creation was to bring him pleasure.

The chief way in which we as humanity do this is through loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

Instead of this, we have sinned against our loving Creator and acted in high-handed rebellion.

God has vowed that he will righteously and lovingly judge sinners with eternal death.

But God, being merciful, loving, gracious, and just, sent his own son, Jesus Christ, in the likeness of man to live as a man; fulfilling his perfect requirements in the place of sinners; loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

And further, his son bore the eternal judgment of God upon the cross of Calvary, as he satisfied the eternal anger of God, standing in the place of sinners. God treated Jesus as a sinner, though he was perfectly sinless, that he might declare sinners as perfect.

This glorious transaction occurs as the sinner puts their faith (dependence, trust) in the Lord Jesus Christ as their substitute. God then charges Christ’s perfection to the sinner, and no longer views him as an enemy but instead an adopted son covered in the perfect righteousness of his son.

God furnished proof that this sacrifice was accepted by raising Jesus from the dead.

God will judge the world in righteousness and all of those who are not covered in the righteousness of Christ, depending on him for forgiveness, will be forced to stand on their own to bear the eternal anger of God.

Therefore, all must turn from sin and receive Christ Jesus as Lord.

What Is the Gospel?

There is no greater message to be heard than that which we call the gospel. But as important as that is, it is often given to massive distortions or over simplifications. People think they’re preaching the gospel to you when they tell you, ‘you can have a purpose to your life’, or that ‘you can have meaning to your life’, or that ‘you can have a personal relationship with Jesus.’ All of those things are true, and they’re all important, but they don’t get to the heart of the gospel.

The gospel is called the ‘good news’ because it addresses the most serious problem that you and I have as human beings, and that problem is simply this: God is holy and He is just, and I’m not. And at the end of my life, I’m going to stand before a just and holy God, and I’ll be judged. And I’ll be judged either on the basis of my own righteousness–or lack of it –or the righteousness of another. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus lived a life of perfect righteousness, of perfect obedience to God, not for His own well being but for His people. He has done for me what I couldn’t possibly do for myself. But not only has He lived that life of perfect obedience, He offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice to satisfy the justice and the righteousness of God.

The great misconception in our day is this: that God isn’t concerned to protect His own integrity. He’s a kind of wishy-washy deity, who just waves a wand of forgiveness over everybody. No. For God to forgive you is a very costly matter. It cost the sacrifice of His own Son. So valuable was that sacrifice that God pronounced it valuable by raising Him from the dead – so that Christ died for us, He was raised for our justification. So the gospel is something objective. It is the message of who Jesus is and what He did. And it also has a subjective dimension. How are the benefits of Jesus subjectively appropriated to us? How do I get it? The Bible makes it clear that we are justified not by our works, not by our efforts, not by our deeds, but by faith–and by faith alone. The only way you can receive the benefit of Christ’s life and death is by putting your trust in Him–and in Him alone. You do that, you’re declared just by God, you’re adopted into His family, you’re forgiven of all of your sins, and you have begun your pilgrimage for eternity.

The Gospel In A Nutshell

Now, with regard to this rule of faith—that we may from this point acknowledge what it is which we defend—it is, you must know, that which prescribes the belief that there is one only God, and that He is none other than the Creator of the world, who produced all things out of nothing through His own Word, first of all sent forth; that this Word is called His Son, and, under the name of God, was seen “in diverse manners” by the patriarchs, heard at all times in the prophets, at last brought down by the Spirit and Power of the Father into the Virgin Mary, was made flesh in her womb, and, being born of her, went forth as Jesus Christ; thenceforth He preached the new law and the new promise of the kingdom of heaven, worked miracles; having been crucified, He rose again the third day; (then) having ascended into the heavens, He sat at the right hand of the Father; sent instead of Himself the Power of the Holy Ghost to lead such as believe; will come with glory to take the saints to the enjoyment of everlasting life and of the heavenly promises, and to condemn the wicked to everlasting fire, after the resurrection of both these classes shall have happened, together with the restoration of their flesh. This rule, as it will be proved, was taught by Christ, and raises amongst ourselves no other questions than those which heresies introduce, and which make men heretics.

Tertullian, “On Prescription Against Heretics,” Chapter XIIl

Ravi Zacharias explains the gospel in two minutes:

The Gospel on 5 Fingers

Can you explain the gospel in 30 seconds? In one minute? In five minutes? Here’s one way I have found helpful. The five main components of the gospel can be remembered on 5 fingers of one hand. Here they are:

1) Jesus’ birth
2) Jesus’ life
3) Jesus’ death
4) Jesus’ resurrection
5) Jesus’ ascension

Obviously each point can be elaborated on depending on how much time you have. Here’s the short version:

1) Jesus’ birth – Jesus, God himself, the creator of the universe, the Messiah, became a human being – took on flesh, and was born of a virgin.

2) Jesus’ life – Jesus lived a life of perfect obedience to his Father. Though he was tempted in every way as we are, he never once sinned.

3) Jesus’ death – on the cross, Jesus himself took all our sins and paid for them. God the father counted all our sins to Jesus as if he himself had personally committed them. Then Jesus bore God’s wrath towards sin – the punishment we deserved – as a substitute for us.

4) Jesus’ resurrection – within 3 days, Jesus rose physically from the dead, proving that his sacrifice for sins have been accepted by God, since the punishment for sin was death. Jesus was seen by numerous people after he rose including 500 at one time (1 Corinthians 15).

5) Jesus’ ascension – Jesus ascended physically into heaven where he reigns as King of kings and Lord of lords. And someday he will return to the earth.

That’s the gospel, the good news, and if we believe in Jesus Christ and this good news and call upon him he will save us from our sins and give us eternal life.

That’s a simple way to remember the gospel – five fingers. Even a child can do it. So ask God to give you opportunities to share his good news today.

Ready to start your new life with God?

Who do you think that I am?

With that brief question Jesus Christ confronted His followers with the most important issue they would ever face. He had spent much time with them and made some bold claims about His identity and authority. Now the time had come for them either to believe or deny His teachings.

Who do you say Jesus is? Your response to Him will determine not only your values and lifestyle, but your eternal destiny as well.

The Perseverance (Security) of the Saints

Notice all the Scripture references!

It is not just a handful of texts that teach the perseverance of the saints: the entire gospel sustains and confirms it. The Father has chosen them before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4), ordained them to eternal life (Acts 13:48), to be conformed to the image of his Son (Rom. 8:29). This election stands (Rom. 9:11; Heb. 6:17) and in due time carries with it the calling and justification and glorification (Rom. 8:30). Christ, in whom all the promises of God are Yes and Amen (2 Cor. 1:20), died for those who were given him by the Father (John 17:6, 12) in order that he might give them eternal life and not lose a single one of them (6:40; 17:2); he therefore gives them eternal life and they will never be lost in all eternity; no one will snatch them out of his hand (6:39; 10:28).

The Holy Spirit who regenerates them remains eternally with them (14:16) and seals them for the day of redemption (Eph. 1:13; 4:30). The covenant of grace is firm and confirmed with an oath (Heb. 6:16–18; 13:20), unbreakable like a marriage (Eph. 5:31–32), like a testament (Heb. 9:17), and by virtue of that covenant, God calls his elect. He inscribes the law upon their inmost being, puts his fear in their heart (Heb. 8:10; 10:14ff.), will not let them be tempted beyond their strength (1 Cor. 10:13), confirms and completes the good work he has begun in them (1 Cor. 1:9; Phil. 1:6), and keeps them for the return of Christ to receive the heavenly inheritance (1 Thess. 5:23; 2 Thess. 3:3; 1 Pet. 1:4–5).

In his intercession before the Father, Christ acts in such a way that their faith may not fail (Luke 22:32), that in the world they may be kept from the evil one (John 17:11, 20), that they may be saved for all times (Heb. 7:20), that their sins will be forgiven them (1 John 2:1), and that they may all be where he is to behold his glory (John 17:24). The benefits of Christ, which the Holy Spirit imparts to them, are all irrevocable (Rom. 11:29). Those who are called are also glorified (8:30). Those who are adopted as children are heirs of eternal life (8:17; Gal. 4:7). Those who believe have eternal life already here and now (John 3:16). That life itself, being eternal, cannot be lost. It cannot die since it cannot sin (1 John 3:9). Faith is a firm ground (Heb. 11:1), hope is an anchor (6:19) and does not disappoint us (Rom. 5:5), and love never ends (1 Cor. 13:8).

What is it to glorify God?

Regeneration, Repentance and Reformation

Taken and adapted by,  A Body of Divinity”

What is it to glorify God?

Glorifying God consists in four things:1: Appreciation,2. Adoration,3. Affection,4. Subjection.

I.    Appreciation. To glorify God is to set God highest in our thoughts, and to have a venerable esteem of him.Psalms 92:2. ‘Thou, Lord, art most high for evermore.’ Psalms 97:7. ‘Thou art exalted far above all gods.’ There is in God all that may draw forth both wonder and delight; there is a constellation of all beauties; he is prima causa, the original and springhead of being, who sheds a glory upon the creature. We glorify God, when we are God-admirers; admire his attributes, which are the glistering beams by which the divine nature shines forth; his promises which are the charter of free grace, and the spiritual cabinet where the pearl of price…

Are you a sinner?

Possessing the Treasure

by Mike Ratliff

1 On one of the days while He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders confronted Him, 2 and they spoke, saying to Him, “Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?” 3 Jesus answered and said to them, “I will also ask you a question, and you tell Me:4 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?” 5 They reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why did you not believe him? ’ 6 But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.” 7 So they answered that they did not know where it came from. 8 And Jesus said…

When Mother’s Day Hurts – Unlocking the Bible

For many, Mother’s Day feels more like a day of mourning than a day of celebration. It stands as a reminder of what many have lost. Perhaps it’s a woman who lost her child through miscarriage, stillbirth, illness, or tragedy. Maybe it’s a woman who recently lost her mother. Perhaps it’s a woman who is estranged from her mother, or a mother challenged by a rebellious child. It may be an infertile woman who is pleading and praying for the gift of motherhood. Maybe it’s a woman who had an abortion long before she came to Christ. No matter the circumstance, the pain and suffering experienced in your congregation on Mother’s Day may make celebration seemingly impossible.

I have been that woman in church on Mother’s Day. Infertility had darkened my heart and tempted me to despair. Anticipating the day in fear, internally I wished over and over: “Please don’t make the moms stand up. Please don’t hand out flowers to moms. Please, no one wish me a happy Mother’s Day.”

It wasn’t anger or jealousy, but my attention was more focused on my isolation and brokenness. I was grieving the loss of my longtime dream to be a mother. I felt as though all eyes were on me: the barren, childless woman in the congregation, the one who “wasn’t blessed.” I assumed people were staring at me thinking, “I wonder what’s wrong with her and why she doesn’t have kids yet.” It wasn’t until I applied the gospel to my circumstance, prayed for guidance, and allowed the Spirit to take over my heart that I began to see heart transformation and change in my response to Mother’s Day.

Romans 12:15 is one of many scriptures that apply to this day: “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.” What does this look like for followers of Christ, and how can we apply it to our circumstance this Mother’s Day?

Rejoice With Those Who Rejoice

I once heard someone say that our culture has a “joy deficiency,” and isn’t that the case sometimes? Sin has confused us into believing that when the Lord withholds blessings from us, that we’re being punished, forgotten, and not loved. When we experience trials, we oftentimes prefer to stay in a season of grief rather than celebrate the blessings of others. But Romans 12:15 doesn’t tell us we get to choose which side we’d prefer to sink into. Though rejoicing on Mother’s Day may seem impossible as we are in the thick of our pain, it’s an opportunity for Christ to enable us to love others in their joyous season of life.

Because all things are from him, through him, and to him, we must be obedient in viewing others’ victories through his mercy. Pray for the power to renew your mind by thinking on what’s right, true, pure, praiseworthy, and admirable about God (Philippians 4:8). Think about the wondrous mercy and grace that you’ve received as a redeemed daughter of the King. Fix your eyes on what Christ has done for you through his incarnation, sinless life, death, resurrection, and ascension.

If you find it difficult to focus your mind on rejoicing with individuals’ blessings, center your attention on the miracles the Lord is working in the Body of Christ. “For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.” (Romans 12:4-5). We can rejoice with the blessings our brothers and sisters in Christ have received without jealousy and anger, because we know that they’re given for the benefit of the entire Body!

Weep With Those Who Weep

It’s central to our spiritual growth to understand that we don’t have to downplay, stifle, or ignore our suffering. There is nothing wrong with mourning the loss of a child, a mother, or an empty womb. For those suffering this holiday, we can be encouraged that the gospel makes up the difference for what’s absent in our lives.

Our Savior relates to our pain and suffering, being described in Isaiah 53:3 as the “man of sorrows.” And perhaps the two most powerful words in Scripture are found in John 11:35: “Jesus wept.” Fully God, fully man, our Savior was not emotionless or detached. He was “deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled” when he stood at the tomb of his dear friend Lazarus (v. 33). Jesus could have chosen to retreat in order to grieve alone, but his public grieving moved those around him. They witnessed his grief and responded, “See how he loved him!” (v. 36).

Christ graciously invites and promises us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30, NIV). By taking the gift of his yoke, Christ pulls our burdens with us – not apart from us, with us. So our burdens are to be used as a reason to come to Christ – and what a privilege it is to be tied to him!

The Intertwining of Joy and Sorrow

No matter which side of motherhood you are on, Romans 12:15 is applicable for you today. When we see our circumstances in view of God’s mercies, we unite with others through their seasons of joy and sorrow, of rejoicing and of weeping. Instead of being tempted to see God’s good gifts to others through eyes of anger, jealousy, and bitterness, we can overcome by harvesting an attitude of thankfulness when others celebrate.

Because Christ experienced both rejoicing and weeping in his time on earth, he knows the intertwining of joy and sorrow deeper than we ever will. We can hold fast because we are being sanctified through gifts of joy, trials of sorrow, and experiences that bring us pain. And because God himself dwells in us, he also guides us, protects us, and cares for us. We rejoice because we have an eternal joy in his glorious presence ahead of us!

Who can you rejoice with, and who might you weep with, this Mother’s Day?

Hillsong exposing their Chrislamic, Roman Catholic agenda

Don’t tell us that Hillsong worship Jesus. Don’t tell us that Hillsong are Christian.

The fact is this: Hillsong are Roman Catholic.

The truth is so plain to see when you watch the below video of Terry Crist explaining Hillsong’s role in their”worship music” and exposes an agenda behind the Hillsong’s annual musical conference in their attempt to unite Protestantism with the Roman Catholic Church.

Hillsong has picked their side and are deliberately working against Christianity, encouraging people to worship the god of Roman Catholicism. This is undeniable and is made perfectly clear if you choose to read all the resources and links available in this article.

The Blessings of Forgiveness – Grace to You Blog

2 Corinthians 2:11

Code: B160506

by John MacArthur

Forgiveness is Christianity at its highest level. It reflects God’s immense forgiveness through Christ, and no human expression of forgiveness could ever surpass what Christ has done for us.

But extending forgiveness to others also brings with it great blessings upon the Christian life. Let’s conclude this series by considering some of those tremendous blessings.

Forgiveness Deflects Pride

Pride, I am convinced, is the primary reason most people refuse to forgive. They nurse self-pity (which is nothing but a form of pride). Their ego is wounded, and they will not stand for that. Prideful reactions to an offense can run the gamut from those who simply wallow in self-pity to those who retaliate with an even worse offense. All such responses are wrong because they are motivated by pride.

Self-glory, self-protection, ego, pride, vengeance, and retaliation have no place in the heart of true forgiveness. It doesn’t wallow in pity nor does it gather supporters in the quest for vengeance. It doesn’t bask in the sympathy offered by supporters.

True forgiveness sets aside the wounded ego. One of the most beautiful biblical illustrations of this is Joseph, whose own brothers sold him into Egyptian slavery. In Egypt Joseph was falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife and then imprisoned for several years. For many people those would have been years of festering resentment and time spent plotting revenge. Not Joseph. When he finally encountered his brothers again, he was in a position to save them from famine. He told his brothers, “Do not be grieved or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life” (Genesis 45:5).

All Joseph saw was the divine providence:

For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are still five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant in the earth, and to keep you alive by a great deliverance. (Genesis 45:6–7)

Where’s the ego in that? Where’s the “poor me”? Where’s the coddled misery? Where’s the self-pity? Where’s the longing for vengeance? There isn’t any. Forgiveness erases all such evil influences. Forgiveness frees us from the bitter chains of pride and self-pity.

Forgiveness Shows Mercy

Paul admonished the Corinthians to show mercy to a repentant offender whom they had disciplined: “Sufficient for such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the majority” (2 Corinthians 2:6). The discipline the man had already suffered was enough. He had confessed his sin and repented. Paul wanted the Corinthians to back off. Now it was time to show mercy.

Christians should be more eager to forgive than to condemn, because forgiveness, not condemnation, epitomizes the heart of our Lord (Luke 9:5; John 3:17). Furthermore, we who live only by the mercy of God should be eager to show mercy to others. When an offender repents, we should restore him in a spirit of gentleness, realizing we too could be in the same situation (Galatians 6:1). We accept his repentance. That should be the end of the issue. That’s the whole gist of Ephesians 4:32 and Colossians 3:13, which tell us we should forgive in the same manner Christ forgave us—generously, eagerly, magnanimously, and abundantly.

Forgiveness Restores Joy

Paul, modeling the forgiveness he wanted the Corinthians to show to the offender, was eager to restore the man’s joy: “You should rather forgive and comfort him, otherwise such a one might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow” (2 Corinthians 2:7).

Sin destroys joy. David noted this in his great confession of sin: “Restore to me the joy of Your salvation” (Psalm 51:12). Sin always shatters the sinner’s joy. But forgiveness restores the joy. Two verses later David wrote, “Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness” (Psalm 51:14).

So Paul instructs the Corinthians to forgive their brother and end his sorrow. The sorrow of discipline had brought him to repentance; now it was time for joy. The believers in the Corinthian fellowship needed to be more eager to bring the man joy than they were to cause him sorrow.

That is the heart of God. He is always tenderhearted toward repentant sinners. He takes no pleasure in the punishment of the wicked but delights when the wicked repent (Ezekiel 18:23, 32; 33:11). “He does not afflict willingly or grieve the sons of men” (Lamentations 3:33). God is like the prodigal son’s father, who ran to meet his son and embraced and received him “while he was still a long way off” (Luke 15:20).

Forgiveness Affirms Love

“By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). How does the world know Christians love one another? What about our love for one another is remarkable, and visible, to a watching world? Is it because we socialize? No. Non-Christians socialize too. It’s not our potluck meals or group activities that best display our love toward one another, but our forgiveness. Love is best manifested in forgiveness. And the real test of love is how eagerly we forgive when we are offended.

Almost nothing can fracture a church where forgiveness is practiced, because unresolved issues are never left to fester. Offenses are dealt with. They are forgiven. Transgressions are covered.

Forgiveness Proves Obedience

We have seen so far that forgiveness is inextricably tied to humility, mercy, joy, and love. Those are all noble virtues—fruit of the Spirit (cf. Galatians 5:22–23). Forgiveness prompts and nurtures all those virtues. But if forgiveness were entirely unrelated to those crucial Christian character qualities, if forgiveness did nothing to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit, it would still be right to forgive.

Why? Because, as we’ve seen in this series, God has commanded that we forgive.

Forgiveness Thwarts Satan

Paul urged the Corinthians to forgive, “so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes” (2 Corinthians 2:11). Satan’s whole agenda is undermined by forgiveness. If forgiveness deflects pride, restores joy, affirms mercy, and proves obedience, imagine how Satan must hate it! Therefore, forgiveness is an essential part of undoing Satan’s schemes.

To refuse forgiveness is to fall into Satan’s trap. Unforgivingness has all the opposite effects of forgiveness: it hinders humility, mercy, joy, love, obedience, and fellowship—and therefore it is as destructive of individual character as it is of harmony in the church.

Conclusion

Forgiveness, then, is the soil in which numerous spiritual fruits and divine blessings are cultivated. Tending and nurturing the soil of forgiveness is one of the surest ways to develop spiritual health and maturity.

Why, then, would any Christian ever deliberately withhold forgiveness? We whose very existence depends on the inestimable mercy shown to us in Christ ought to foster a similar mercy in our dealings with one another, and we ought to model forgiveness before a watching world whose greatest need is God’s forgiveness.

Think about it like this: Forgiveness is both a blessing and a means to further blessings. Those who refuse to forgive forfeit the multiple blessings of forgiveness. But those who forgive unleash multiple divine blessings, not only on those whom they forgive, but also on themselves. This is the very thing to which we are called.

If you have taken Christ as your Savior but not as Lord, you have deluded yourself !

Regeneration, Repentance and Reformation

Written by Arthur W. Pink

We do not ask, Is Christ your “Savior,” but is He, really and truly, your Lord?

If He be not your Lord, then most certainly He is not your “Savior.” Those who have not received Christ Jesus as their “Lord,” and yet suppose Him to be their “Savior,” are deluded, and their hope rests on a foundation of sand. Multitudes are deceived on this vital point, and therefore, if the reader values his or her soul, we implore you to give a most careful reading to this little tract.

When we ask: “Is Christ your LORD?”, we do not inquire, Do you believe in the Godhood of Jesus of Nazareth? The demons do that (Matt. 8:28, 29) and yet perish notwithstanding!

You may be firmly convinced of the Deity of Christ, and yet be in your sins. You may speak of Him…

Shadows of Victimhood

Happy Living!

Woman-with-TearAs we have seen with the Rescuer, Persecutor, and Victim, each person in the Drama Triangle has self-defeating beliefs or starting gate beliefs (a “script”) made to order for their particular dance around the triangle. These “scripts” consist of a particular set of beliefs, learned in our family of origin, through which the world and ourselves are seen. Let’s briefly review before proceeding:

The Rescuer’s Story

Rescuers believe their needs are unimportant and irrelevant. This means the only way they can legitimately connect with others, feel valued, and have their needs met is through the back door of care-taking. Rescuers chastise themselves when they aren’t care-taking others. Their starting gate story is, “If I take care of others well enough and long enough, then I will be fulfilled. It’s the only way to be loved.” Unfortunately, Rescuers are involved with life-time Victims who have no idea how to…

But They Said It Wasn’t An Agenda!

Eradicate: Blotting Out God in America

rainbow WHFrom a rainbow-colored White House to corporations proudly promoting political correctness, it is difficult to deny the spiritual and moral decline in our country. Knowing these events do not happen by chance, what are the causes of cultural decomposition and what can be done to save this nation?

Start by saving the people from eternal destruction. To do this, truth must be told. It is nearly impossible to correct America’s direction and slow the decline if enough people are not convinced that we are way off course to begin with or if we are unwilling to learn from history.

Those who understand we are in the last days know there are two major causes to the negative effects we are seeing in America today: the success of secular agendas to blot out God and eradicate Christian morality, and the complacency of we the people.

There have always been enemies of…
