Members of Congress are in an unusual position as they demand an explanation for Mylan NV’s 400 percent price hike for the EpiPen and focus attention squarely on its CEO: Heather Bresch. If lawmakers follow the usual script, Bresch could get called up to Capitol Hill next month to explain her company’s justification for raising the price on the life-saving allergy shot. But that could be awkward, since she’s the daughter of Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

As the U.S. draws down the prison population by transferring inmates to friendly nations, the cost of housing terrorism suspects at the detention facility in Cuba has climbed to about $6 million per person, according to an analysis of Defense Department figures. That’s produced a politically convenient byproduct for an administration determined to close the site: sticker shock. The per-inmate cost will only increase as Obama continues to transfer prisoners, as he did last week when 15 detainees were sent to the United Arab Emirates.

Since the beginning of the year, the Baltimore Police Department had been using the plane to investigate all sorts of crimes, from property thefts to shootings. The Cessna sometimes flew above the city for as many as 10 hours a day, and the public had no idea it was there. A company called Persistent Surveillance Systems, based in Dayton, Ohio, provided the service to the police, and the funding came from a private donor. No public disclosure of the program had ever been made.

UBS Group AG and peers on both sides of the Atlantic plan to seek regulatory approval to use a new form of digital cash to settle financial transactions, cutting costs and time.

On Tuesday, Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk released a new, 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack for the dual-motor versions of the Model S and Model X. The upgrade makes the Model S the first all-electric sedan with a range of more than 300 miles, and it cuts the zero-to-60 miles per hour interval to just 2.5 seconds.

Royal Bank of Scotland has told about 3,000 of its global transaction-services clients to speed up their search for another bank. Their checking accounts, cash management and trade-finance services probably won’t work after Dec. 31.

In 2007, when drugmaker Mylan bought the autoinjecting device, which contains epinephrine (otherwise known as adrenaline), the list price was $57. Now, a two-pack EpiPen will set you back more than $600 without insurance, according to prescription-drug price comparison website GoodRx. Since 2009, when it was $100 for a pack of two, the price has gone up about 500% (though the price varies among pharmacies). And senators are starting to ask for answers.

New data from the National Safety Council found approximately 19,100 people were killed in crashes on U.S. roads during the first six months of the year, a 9 percent increase over the same period in 2015. The organization blames the increase on a combination of factors, including a stronger economy and lower gas prices, which cause people to drive more miles. There is also an alarming number of teenage drivers who are willing to use social media behind the wheel.

Running a city, especially one with more than 20 million people, is no easy task. Running it from inside a jail cell is infinitely more difficult. But that’s exactly what Waseem Akhtar – the new mayor of Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi – will be doing, the Guardian reports. The charges against him include arranging medical care for alleged terrorists and inciting riots across the city in 2007.

The NSA Leak Is Real, Snowden Documents Confirm
“ShadowBrokers” announced an auction for what it claimed were “cyber weapons” made by the NSA. Based on never-before-published documents provided by the whistleblower Edward Snowden, The Intercept can confirm that the arsenal contains authentic NSA software, part of a powerful constellation of tools used to covertly infect computers worldwide.

Commentary: Evidence points to another Snowden at the NSA
if Russia had stolen the hacking tools, it would be senseless to publicize the theft, let alone put them up for sale. A more logical explanation could also be insider theft. If that’s the case, it’s one more reason to question the usefulness of an agency that secretly collects private information on millions of Americans but can’t keep its most valuable data from being stolen, or as it appears in this case, being used against us.

Our Time is Short

Read: Recommitting Your Life To God and Jesus Christ – Restoration and Forgiveness With God and Jesus Christ (Updated Version)

What is The Gospel?

God made everything out of nothing, including you and me. His main purpose in creation was to bring him pleasure.

The chief way in which we as humanity do this is through loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

Instead of this, we have sinned against our loving Creator and acted in high-handed rebellion.

God has vowed that he will righteously and lovingly judge sinners with eternal death.

But God, being merciful, loving, gracious, and just, sent his own son, Jesus Christ, in the likeness of man to live as a man; fulfilling his perfect requirements in the place of sinners; loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

And further, his son bore the eternal judgment of God upon the cross of Calvary, as he satisfied the eternal anger of God, standing in the place of sinners. God treated Jesus as a sinner, though he was perfectly sinless, that he might declare sinners as perfect.

This glorious transaction occurs as the sinner puts their faith (dependence, trust) in the Lord Jesus Christ as their substitute. God then charges Christ’s perfection to the sinner, and no longer views him as an enemy but instead an adopted son covered in the perfect righteousness of his son.

God furnished proof that this sacrifice was accepted by raising Jesus from the dead.

God will judge the world in righteousness and all of those who are not covered in the righteousness of Christ, depending on him for forgiveness, will be forced to stand on their own to bear the eternal anger of God.

Therefore, all must turn from sin and receive Christ Jesus as Lord.

What Is the Gospel?

There is no greater message to be heard than that which we call the gospel. But as important as that is, it is often given to massive distortions or over simplifications. People think they’re preaching the gospel to you when they tell you, ‘you can have a purpose to your life’, or that ‘you can have meaning to your life’, or that ‘you can have a personal relationship with Jesus.’ All of those things are true, and they’re all important, but they don’t get to the heart of the gospel.

The gospel is called the ‘good news’ because it addresses the most serious problem that you and I have as human beings, and that problem is simply this: God is holy and He is just, and I’m not. And at the end of my life, I’m going to stand before a just and holy God, and I’ll be judged. And I’ll be judged either on the basis of my own righteousness–or lack of it –or the righteousness of another. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus lived a life of perfect righteousness, of perfect obedience to God, not for His own well being but for His people. He has done for me what I couldn’t possibly do for myself. But not only has He lived that life of perfect obedience, He offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice to satisfy the justice and the righteousness of God.

The great misconception in our day is this: that God isn’t concerned to protect His own integrity. He’s a kind of wishy-washy deity, who just waves a wand of forgiveness over everybody. No. For God to forgive you is a very costly matter. It cost the sacrifice of His own Son. So valuable was that sacrifice that God pronounced it valuable by raising Him from the dead – so that Christ died for us, He was raised for our justification. So the gospel is something objective. It is the message of who Jesus is and what He did. And it also has a subjective dimension. How are the benefits of Jesus subjectively appropriated to us? How do I get it? The Bible makes it clear that we are justified not by our works, not by our efforts, not by our deeds, but by faith–and by faith alone. The only way you can receive the benefit of Christ’s life and death is by putting your trust in Him–and in Him alone. You do that, you’re declared just by God, you’re adopted into His family, you’re forgiven of all of your sins, and you have begun your pilgrimage for eternity.

The Gospel In A Nutshell

Now, with regard to this rule of faith—that we may from this point acknowledge what it is which we defend—it is, you must know, that which prescribes the belief that there is one only God, and that He is none other than the Creator of the world, who produced all things out of nothing through His own Word, first of all sent forth; that this Word is called His Son, and, under the name of God, was seen “in diverse manners” by the patriarchs, heard at all times in the prophets, at last brought down by the Spirit and Power of the Father into the Virgin Mary, was made flesh in her womb, and, being born of her, went forth as Jesus Christ; thenceforth He preached the new law and the new promise of the kingdom of heaven, worked miracles; having been crucified, He rose again the third day; (then) having ascended into the heavens, He sat at the right hand of the Father; sent instead of Himself the Power of the Holy Ghost to lead such as believe; will come with glory to take the saints to the enjoyment of everlasting life and of the heavenly promises, and to condemn the wicked to everlasting fire, after the resurrection of both these classes shall have happened, together with the restoration of their flesh. This rule, as it will be proved, was taught by Christ, and raises amongst ourselves no other questions than those which heresies introduce, and which make men heretics.

Tertullian, “On Prescription Against Heretics,” Chapter XIIl

Ravi Zacharias explains the gospel in two minutes:

The Gospel on 5 Fingers

Can you explain the gospel in 30 seconds? In one minute? In five minutes? Here’s one way I have found helpful. The five main components of the gospel can be remembered on 5 fingers of one hand. Here they are:

1) Jesus’ birth
2) Jesus’ life
3) Jesus’ death
4) Jesus’ resurrection
5) Jesus’ ascension

Obviously each point can be elaborated on depending on how much time you have. Here’s the short version:

1) Jesus’ birth – Jesus, God himself, the creator of the universe, the Messiah, became a human being – took on flesh, and was born of a virgin.

2) Jesus’ life – Jesus lived a life of perfect obedience to his Father. Though he was tempted in every way as we are, he never once sinned.

3) Jesus’ death – on the cross, Jesus himself took all our sins and paid for them. God the father counted all our sins to Jesus as if he himself had personally committed them. Then Jesus bore God’s wrath towards sin – the punishment we deserved – as a substitute for us.

4) Jesus’ resurrection – within 3 days, Jesus rose physically from the dead, proving that his sacrifice for sins have been accepted by God, since the punishment for sin was death. Jesus was seen by numerous people after he rose including 500 at one time (1 Corinthians 15).

5) Jesus’ ascension – Jesus ascended physically into heaven where he reigns as King of kings and Lord of lords. And someday he will return to the earth.

That’s the gospel, the good news, and if we believe in Jesus Christ and this good news and call upon him he will save us from our sins and give us eternal life.

That’s a simple way to remember the gospel – five fingers. Even a child can do it. So ask God to give you opportunities to share his good news today.

Ready to start your new life with God?

Who do you think that I am?

With that brief question Jesus Christ confronted His followers with the most important issue they would ever face. He had spent much time with them and made some bold claims about His identity and authority. Now the time had come for them either to believe or deny His teachings.

Who do you say Jesus is? Your response to Him will determine not only your values and lifestyle, but your eternal destiny as well.

The Perseverance (Security) of the Saints

Notice all the Scripture references!

It is not just a handful of texts that teach the perseverance of the saints: the entire gospel sustains and confirms it. The Father has chosen them before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4), ordained them to eternal life (Acts 13:48), to be conformed to the image of his Son (Rom. 8:29). This election stands (Rom. 9:11; Heb. 6:17) and in due time carries with it the calling and justification and glorification (Rom. 8:30). Christ, in whom all the promises of God are Yes and Amen (2 Cor. 1:20), died for those who were given him by the Father (John 17:6, 12) in order that he might give them eternal life and not lose a single one of them (6:40; 17:2); he therefore gives them eternal life and they will never be lost in all eternity; no one will snatch them out of his hand (6:39; 10:28).

The Holy Spirit who regenerates them remains eternally with them (14:16) and seals them for the day of redemption (Eph. 1:13; 4:30). The covenant of grace is firm and confirmed with an oath (Heb. 6:16–18; 13:20), unbreakable like a marriage (Eph. 5:31–32), like a testament (Heb. 9:17), and by virtue of that covenant, God calls his elect. He inscribes the law upon their inmost being, puts his fear in their heart (Heb. 8:10; 10:14ff.), will not let them be tempted beyond their strength (1 Cor. 10:13), confirms and completes the good work he has begun in them (1 Cor. 1:9; Phil. 1:6), and keeps them for the return of Christ to receive the heavenly inheritance (1 Thess. 5:23; 2 Thess. 3:3; 1 Pet. 1:4–5).

In his intercession before the Father, Christ acts in such a way that their faith may not fail (Luke 22:32), that in the world they may be kept from the evil one (John 17:11, 20), that they may be saved for all times (Heb. 7:20), that their sins will be forgiven them (1 John 2:1), and that they may all be where he is to behold his glory (John 17:24). The benefits of Christ, which the Holy Spirit imparts to them, are all irrevocable (Rom. 11:29). Those who are called are also glorified (8:30). Those who are adopted as children are heirs of eternal life (8:17; Gal. 4:7). Those who believe have eternal life already here and now (John 3:16). That life itself, being eternal, cannot be lost. It cannot die since it cannot sin (1 John 3:9). Faith is a firm ground (Heb. 11:1), hope is an anchor (6:19) and does not disappoint us (Rom. 5:5), and love never ends (1 Cor. 13:8).

Poll: Americans giving up on God, miracles

According to the Washington Examiner:

No GodHalf of Americans who have left their church no longer believe in God, leading a surge of nearly one quarter of the nation who have no affiliation with any religion, according to a new survey.

Pew Research Center said Wednesday that 49 percent of what they term “nones” left their church and religion because they “don’t believe.” Another 20 percent said they don’t like organized religion. Other reasons included “common sense” and a lack of believe in miracles.

The survey is the latest from Pew that demonstrates a growing trend in America: More and more people are junking religion and many are giving up on God.

Charisma News & Hillsong: The Spirit of The Age

I heard a remark the other day, on some intellectual-esque podcast – far above my own cranial capacities, by the way – that the post-modern era has ceased. We are now in a post, post-modern era, as yet unnamed. This may, or may not be true, but a couple of clear carry-overs from the post-modern mindset still prevail – subjectivism and experientialism.

When the modern era, driven as it was by humanistic rationalism, gave way to the post-modern one, the prevailing evidence of its arrival was disdain for concrete rationalism and a recognition that humanism had failed to fulfill man’s nobly inspired ambitions.   Rationalism became subjectivism – we can no longer know anything for certain. What’s true for you is great, it just may not be true for me.

The embrace of absolute truth in the modern era transitioned from a universally accepted reality to a self-defined, personal perspective. What I feel is true, is true … though I can’t even prove that. The spirit of the age – the ubiquitous idol of tolerance – ensures the veracity of your truth for you, and vigorously defends your right to it.  It could not, should not, dare not be challenged. Who are you to say that what I feel is true isn’t, in fact, true?

Believers know the source of this deception.

We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.  1 John 5:19

Whatever this new era in the world may be, the “church” is increasingly vigorous in its embrace of the spirit of post-modernism.  The influence of absolute truth, while lurking virtually unseen in the shadows of popular, modern “Christianity” – where Scripture is given oral homage and practical disregard – is only verified personally by experience. You can know God is at work because of what you feel. The veracity of His inspired Word is insufficient; the implications of your warm fuzzy are far more validating.

One of the clearest examples of this is an August 23rd post in the “news” outlet Charisma News. The article ‘Hillsong: Let Hope Rise’ Shows Revelation 7:9 In Action is exemplary of Biblical ignorance, experiential affirmation, and the pervasive influence of a “you” centered, false form of Christianity. The writer is trapped in a false religious system that promises hope and confirms it with feelings.

“Goosebumps prickled my skin as I immediately recognized the presence of the Holy Spirit in my home. What surprised me, though, was how He entered: through my computer screen.”  (Source)

The opening paragraph highlights the all-important, widely sought-after “goosebumps” experience. The Holy Spirit was present because warm fuzzies confirmed it.

“God wants to give you His Spirit only through His external Word.”  Martin Luther

Now, not to discount the omnipresent attribute of God, if you are a regenerate believer, you’re not going to walk into your home and bump into the Holy Spirit. He’s not going to leap out of your closet, ooze out of your kitchen cabinet, or esoterically un-pixellate Himself from your computer screen.  He does not announce His presence with “Holy Ghost bumps.”

If you are Christ’s, His Spirit indwells you. How do we know? Because Scripture proclaims it … in numerous places. Check out 1 Corinthians 3:16, Ezekiel 36:27, Isaiah 63:11, Romans 8:11, 2 Timothy 1:14. There’s more, of course, but the surest truth of the indwelling of the Spirit in each believer comes from Christ Himself:

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”  John 14:15-17

The article’s author, however, seemed to only confirm the presence of the Holy Spirit by her feelings, not by the Christ-promised truth of Scripture. But the goosebump emotionalism wasn’t all. Oh, no. The next level of mystical confirmation came. She started crying.

“Admittedly, tears uncontrollably streamed down my face as I heard “Mighty to Save,” a song I’ve known since high school, sung in different languages. This, I thought, really is the next great move of God.”  (Source)

If emotional experience is the foundation of your faith, you don’t have faith. You have an idol of feelings. Feelings are not the validation of the truth of faith; God’s Word is the validation of the truth of faith, followed by the evident fruit of the Spirit in His sanctifying work.  And, no … tears, goosebumps, and emotionalistic highs are not “fruits of the Spirit.”

“The Spirit and the Word must be combined.   If I look to the Spirit alone without the Word, I lay myself open to great delusions.”  George Mueller

Of the ministries of the Holy Spirit, for the believer His function as illuminator of truth is foremost.  He guides us to understanding His Word.  Never pointing the believer to Himself, the Holy Spirit always points to Jesus in the Word.

“The Holy Spirit is evident as these men and women write songs, record music, spend time with their families and move about town. He fuels their callings, even those who don’t travel. What’s more, He can be felt by anyone so much as watching the documentary. I was alone in my home and keenly aware He was there.”  (Source)

Do you read the experiential validation of faith in this? “He fuels,” “He can be felt by anyone,” “keenly aware He was there” affirm the foundation of this “faith” on feelings as opposed to the propositional truth of God in His inspired Word.  And “anyone” can “feel” the Holy Spirit just by watching a Hillsong documentary?  Really?  Sans regeneration first?  Umm, no.

“I know the Holy Spirit is invisible, the Holy Spirit works in a supernatural, and divine, and imperceptible way within us.”  John MacArthur (Source)

The Apostle Paul’s introductory thanksgiving and prayer in his letter to the church at Colossae give us more than a clue about the eternal importance of our apprehension of truth as knowledge, not emotions.

“We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”   Colossians 1:3-11

Paul didn’t pray that the Colossians would have warm fuzzies; he prayed that they would grow in “spiritual wisdom and understanding.” If you’re a believer, take this as encouragement. But if you’re an acolyte of a false, emotions-driven form of faith, take it as a warning. Feelings are not the foundation of faith, nor are they a guide for it. Why? Because the “heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick.”  (Jeremiah 17:9)

“Let Hope Rise proves worship is a unifying experience among believers. Hillsong United’s lyrics allow Christians to place their own hearts within the songs and cry out to God in a way that feels personal. The documentary shows that this is not a perfected formula, but the heartbeat of the band.”  (Source)

The article’s headline is summarized in this paragraph. However, the vision of the Apostle John in Revelation is of the glorified church in Heaven, not a crowd of ecumenism embracing revelers at a Christianized rock concert from a prosperity gospel church from down under. While the use of narcigetics is a well-known technique by the Word-Faith likes of Hillsong, the author here indicates the great value the technique offers by inserting one’s self within band’s tunes. Doing so helps  “Christians .. cry out to God in a way that feels personal.”  Yippee and pass the Kleenex … I guess.

“Show me a person obsessed with the Holy Spirit, and I’ll show you a person not filled with the Holy Spirit.”  John MacArthur

While Charisma News can be a great source of cathartic comic relief, it reveals the woeful, unscriptural condition of what the world increasingly views as the face of Christianity. In this case, Hillsong is merely one featured evidence of a faux form of faith, falsely called Christian, that is an intrinsic expression of the post-modern spirit of the age in which truth is subjective and experiential. The pursuit, and experience, of “Holy Spirit” feelings is the validation of truth.

Yet, in authentic Christianity, Truth is verified by the Word.

You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.  John 8:32

And, oh, don’t think that authentic faith is void of emotions. It isn’t.   But those emotions are eternally permanent, given as promised gifts of Christ to His chosen. The peace, love, joy, and the fruits of the Spirit (John 14:27, John 15:10, Galatians 5:22) that Christ brings, though, are not things the enemy of our Lord, try as he might, can counterfeit. But he does try and, sadly, many fall victim to a deceptive faith founded on feelings.

Rely on the Truth of His Word and take seriously our Lord’s warning in Matthew 24:4, “See that no one leads you astray,” even if you do get goosebumps.

The Coming Free Speech Apocalypse

f speech cc cc cc

There was a time in this country when liberals were the ones who called for free speech. They marched for it. They fought for it. Berkeley Free Speech – Berkeley – was a real thing. Now however the sons and daughters of this crowd have embraced the totalitarianism their parents and grandparents fought against. It’s not supposed to be totalitarianism. It’s supposed to be “inclusive.” But we stare now at a mini-dark age in academia and in the media.

Survey of over 200 peer-reviewed studies finds no biological basis for “sexual orientation”

I have a key that will unlock a puzzling mystery I have a key that will unlock a puzzling mystery

This is a big deal.

I was e-mailed and messaged by billions of people to write about this, even though I had already tweeted it Monday morning, from Ryan Anderson, and then again Monday afternoon, from Kelsey Harkness.

Anyway, there was a new report published in the journal The New Atlantis, surveying all the peer-reviewed research that has been done on sexual orientation and gender identity. (H/T Roland, George, William, and many, many others)

This article from the Daily Signal explains what the report is about:

A major new report, published today in the journal The New Atlantis, challenges the leading narratives that the media has pushed regarding sexual orientation and gender identity.

Co-authored by two of the nation’s leading scholars on mental health and sexuality, the 143-page report discusses over 200 peer-reviewed studies in the biological, psychological, and social…
