Read: Recommitting Your Life To God and Jesus Christ – Restoration and Forgiveness With God and Jesus Christ (Updated Version)

What is The Gospel?

God made everything out of nothing, including you and me. His main purpose in creation was to bring him pleasure.

The chief way in which we as humanity do this is through loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

Instead of this, we have sinned against our loving Creator and acted in high-handed rebellion.

God has vowed that he will righteously and lovingly judge sinners with eternal death.

But God, being merciful, loving, gracious, and just, sent his own son, Jesus Christ, in the likeness of man to live as a man; fulfilling his perfect requirements in the place of sinners; loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

And further, his son bore the eternal judgment of God upon the cross of Calvary, as he satisfied the eternal anger of God, standing in the place of sinners. God treated Jesus as a sinner, though he was perfectly sinless, that he might declare sinners as perfect.

This glorious transaction occurs as the sinner puts their faith (dependence, trust) in the Lord Jesus Christ as their substitute. God then charges Christ’s perfection to the sinner, and no longer views him as an enemy but instead an adopted son covered in the perfect righteousness of his son.

God furnished proof that this sacrifice was accepted by raising Jesus from the dead.

God will judge the world in righteousness and all of those who are not covered in the righteousness of Christ, depending on him for forgiveness, will be forced to stand on their own to bear the eternal anger of God.

Therefore, all must turn from sin and receive Christ Jesus as Lord.

What Is the Gospel?

There is no greater message to be heard than that which we call the gospel. But as important as that is, it is often given to massive distortions or over simplifications. People think they’re preaching the gospel to you when they tell you, ‘you can have a purpose to your life’, or that ‘you can have meaning to your life’, or that ‘you can have a personal relationship with Jesus.’ All of those things are true, and they’re all important, but they don’t get to the heart of the gospel.

The gospel is called the ‘good news’ because it addresses the most serious problem that you and I have as human beings, and that problem is simply this: God is holy and He is just, and I’m not. And at the end of my life, I’m going to stand before a just and holy God, and I’ll be judged. And I’ll be judged either on the basis of my own righteousness–or lack of it –or the righteousness of another. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus lived a life of perfect righteousness, of perfect obedience to God, not for His own well being but for His people. He has done for me what I couldn’t possibly do for myself. But not only has He lived that life of perfect obedience, He offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice to satisfy the justice and the righteousness of God.

The great misconception in our day is this: that God isn’t concerned to protect His own integrity. He’s a kind of wishy-washy deity, who just waves a wand of forgiveness over everybody. No. For God to forgive you is a very costly matter. It cost the sacrifice of His own Son. So valuable was that sacrifice that God pronounced it valuable by raising Him from the dead – so that Christ died for us, He was raised for our justification. So the gospel is something objective. It is the message of who Jesus is and what He did. And it also has a subjective dimension. How are the benefits of Jesus subjectively appropriated to us? How do I get it? The Bible makes it clear that we are justified not by our works, not by our efforts, not by our deeds, but by faith–and by faith alone. The only way you can receive the benefit of Christ’s life and death is by putting your trust in Him–and in Him alone. You do that, you’re declared just by God, you’re adopted into His family, you’re forgiven of all of your sins, and you have begun your pilgrimage for eternity.

The Gospel In A Nutshell

Now, with regard to this rule of faith—that we may from this point acknowledge what it is which we defend—it is, you must know, that which prescribes the belief that there is one only God, and that He is none other than the Creator of the world, who produced all things out of nothing through His own Word, first of all sent forth; that this Word is called His Son, and, under the name of God, was seen “in diverse manners” by the patriarchs, heard at all times in the prophets, at last brought down by the Spirit and Power of the Father into the Virgin Mary, was made flesh in her womb, and, being born of her, went forth as Jesus Christ; thenceforth He preached the new law and the new promise of the kingdom of heaven, worked miracles; having been crucified, He rose again the third day; (then) having ascended into the heavens, He sat at the right hand of the Father; sent instead of Himself the Power of the Holy Ghost to lead such as believe; will come with glory to take the saints to the enjoyment of everlasting life and of the heavenly promises, and to condemn the wicked to everlasting fire, after the resurrection of both these classes shall have happened, together with the restoration of their flesh. This rule, as it will be proved, was taught by Christ, and raises amongst ourselves no other questions than those which heresies introduce, and which make men heretics.

Tertullian, “On Prescription Against Heretics,” Chapter XIIl

Ravi Zacharias explains the gospel in two minutes:

The Gospel on 5 Fingers

Can you explain the gospel in 30 seconds? In one minute? In five minutes? Here’s one way I have found helpful. The five main components of the gospel can be remembered on 5 fingers of one hand. Here they are:

1) Jesus’ birth
2) Jesus’ life
3) Jesus’ death
4) Jesus’ resurrection
5) Jesus’ ascension

Obviously each point can be elaborated on depending on how much time you have. Here’s the short version:

1) Jesus’ birth – Jesus, God himself, the creator of the universe, the Messiah, became a human being – took on flesh, and was born of a virgin.

2) Jesus’ life – Jesus lived a life of perfect obedience to his Father. Though he was tempted in every way as we are, he never once sinned.

3) Jesus’ death – on the cross, Jesus himself took all our sins and paid for them. God the father counted all our sins to Jesus as if he himself had personally committed them. Then Jesus bore God’s wrath towards sin – the punishment we deserved – as a substitute for us.

4) Jesus’ resurrection – within 3 days, Jesus rose physically from the dead, proving that his sacrifice for sins have been accepted by God, since the punishment for sin was death. Jesus was seen by numerous people after he rose including 500 at one time (1 Corinthians 15).

5) Jesus’ ascension – Jesus ascended physically into heaven where he reigns as King of kings and Lord of lords. And someday he will return to the earth.

That’s the gospel, the good news, and if we believe in Jesus Christ and this good news and call upon him he will save us from our sins and give us eternal life.

That’s a simple way to remember the gospel – five fingers. Even a child can do it. So ask God to give you opportunities to share his good news today.

The Perseverance (Security) of the Saints

Notice all the Scripture references!

It is not just a handful of texts that teach the perseverance of the saints: the entire gospel sustains and confirms it. The Father has chosen them before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4), ordained them to eternal life (Acts 13:48), to be conformed to the image of his Son (Rom. 8:29). This election stands (Rom. 9:11; Heb. 6:17) and in due time carries with it the calling and justification and glorification (Rom. 8:30). Christ, in whom all the promises of God are Yes and Amen (2 Cor. 1:20), died for those who were given him by the Father (John 17:6, 12) in order that he might give them eternal life and not lose a single one of them (6:40; 17:2); he therefore gives them eternal life and they will never be lost in all eternity; no one will snatch them out of his hand (6:39; 10:28).

The Holy Spirit who regenerates them remains eternally with them (14:16) and seals them for the day of redemption (Eph. 1:13; 4:30). The covenant of grace is firm and confirmed with an oath (Heb. 6:16–18; 13:20), unbreakable like a marriage (Eph. 5:31–32), like a testament (Heb. 9:17), and by virtue of that covenant, God calls his elect. He inscribes the law upon their inmost being, puts his fear in their heart (Heb. 8:10; 10:14ff.), will not let them be tempted beyond their strength (1 Cor. 10:13), confirms and completes the good work he has begun in them (1 Cor. 1:9; Phil. 1:6), and keeps them for the return of Christ to receive the heavenly inheritance (1 Thess. 5:23; 2 Thess. 3:3; 1 Pet. 1:4–5).

In his intercession before the Father, Christ acts in such a way that their faith may not fail (Luke 22:32), that in the world they may be kept from the evil one (John 17:11, 20), that they may be saved for all times (Heb. 7:20), that their sins will be forgiven them (1 John 2:1), and that they may all be where he is to behold his glory (John 17:24). The benefits of Christ, which the Holy Spirit imparts to them, are all irrevocable (Rom. 11:29). Those who are called are also glorified (8:30). Those who are adopted as children are heirs of eternal life (8:17; Gal. 4:7). Those who believe have eternal life already here and now (John 3:16). That life itself, being eternal, cannot be lost. It cannot die since it cannot sin (1 John 3:9). Faith is a firm ground (Heb. 11:1), hope is an anchor (6:19) and does not disappoint us (Rom. 5:5), and love never ends (1 Cor. 13:8).

Pope Francis Issues Call For Transgenders And Homosexuals To ‘Be Embraced’ By Catholic Church

Pope Francis has said all transsexuals and homosexuals should be ‘welcomed’ and embraced by the Catholic Church.

“I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” Luke 13:3 (KJV)

EDITOR’S NOTE: Pope Francis is adamant that the Catholic Church must “welcome and accept transgenders and homosexuals” but does not say that homosexuality is a sin. Would the Jesus of the Bible turn away a homosexual who came to Him? No…but…the Jesus of the Bible would tell that man or women they needed to repent and turn from their sin. Pope Francis says they should be welcomed just as they are with no need for them to repent and get saved. That’s a doctrine of the Devil.

Francis said Jesus would never have turned away transgender people and revealed he had ministered to homosexuals as a priest, bishop and now as Pope.

‘When a person arrives before Jesus, Jesus certainly will not say, ‘Go away because you are homosexual’,’ the religious leader said.

Pope Francis: Global Warming is SIN – Homosexuality is NOT

‘Each case must be welcomed, accompanied, studied, discerned and integrated. This is what Jesus would do today.’

Francis said he had ministered to gay people throughout his career in the Catholic Church.

He said: ‘I’ve never abandoned them. When someone who has this condition comes before Jesus, Jesus would surely never say ‘go away because you’re gay’.’

Francis recounted the story of a Spanish transgender man who wrote him a letter recounting his transition from a woman to a man, who later married a woman.

The Pope said: ‘And I received them. And they were happy.’ source

What is the Spirit’s Role in Our Reading of Scripture?

Many Christians are unclear how to follow the Holy Spirit. “Do we take prayerful walks and wait on his leading?” inquires Amy Byrd, one of the hosts of Mortification of Spin. “Is that how we receive his teaching? Do we clear our minds and wait for his prompting? Can we quiet ourselves enough to hear God’s whisper? Can others authoritatively deliver a personal message to us through the Spirit?” Listen to Byrd’s response:

BibleBuilding off of our important discussion about traditional doctrine on this week’s Mortification of Spin podcast, I want to address something I see in a lot of popular level Christian books. There is a false notion among evangelicals that we can either trust in the ordinary means of grace and the church’s creedal catechetical tradition, or we can be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading. The notion is that we can follow an old custom or we can follow the Source himself.

And so much of this teaching on following the Spirit sounds a lot like the game of telephone. In the game of telephone, one person passes along a message by whispering in another person’s ear. That person then whispers what they think they’ve heard to another ear, and this continues with the goal for the final receiver of the message to try and speak the original message. If you’ve ever played telephone, you know how silly the message can end up. Likewise, to some Christians the idea of following the Spirit goes something like this:  Jesus is calling, his Holy Spirit will deliver the important personal message, and now you need to obey this inner voice and then figure out which Scripture supports it. We may even do some lucky dipping, hoping the Spirit will lead us to our devotion for the day by the “providence” of where our Bible randomly opens and to where our finger falls.  Then maybe we’ll have that light bulb moment of clarity.

Why Doctrine Still Matters

Staying rooted in Scripture-based, sound doctrine keeps us wise. That is, it keeps us rooted in God’s ways, which are higher than our ways, and in God’s thoughts, which are higher than our thoughts. Culture will shift, our feelings will shift, and human opinion will shift. But truth will not.

The Demise of Theology (And Its Hopeful Recovery)

One can safely say that contemporary Western Christians may be the most theologically illiterate since the church began 2000 years ago. The woeful lack of basic theology and sound doctrine in so many churches today is coupled with a woeful biblical illiteracy.

theology-1The two go together of course. It is hard to have good theology if one knows very little about the source of good theology – the Bible. We expect the surrounding culture to be theologically malnourished, but it is a tragedy when the Body of Christ is also so spiritually sick.

And this in spite of all the many admonitions in the New Testament to teach sound doctrine, to be mature in Christian teaching, and to have a faith built solidly on the Word of God. I have written on this topic numerous times. In one such article I offer “Twenty Reasons Why Theology Matters”: billmuehlenberg.com/2006/09/26/in-defence-of-theology/

That Westerners are theologically impoverished is easy enough to measure and ascertain. Consider two recent studies that have come out of America. Ligonier Ministires, the teaching fellowship of R.C Sproul, has teamed up with LifeWay Research twice now to help gauge the status of American theological knowledge.

And it is not looking very good. Their first bit of research was conducted in 2014, based on the views of three thousand Americans. And now a second such study has just been conducted, with the results now online. Called “The State of Theology,” it gives us a good overview of the low theological standards found in the US today.

Before getting into some of the results of the latest survey, let me offer part of an interview done by Tabletalk with two of the main players in the research project: Chris Larson and Stephen Nichols. Here is just one of the questions:

TT: How has the survey influenced the trajectory of Ligonier’s ministry?
CL: It intensifies our focus and reinforces the urgency of our task. In one sense, there are few surprises in the aggregate results. But it is interesting to dive deeper into the data to see how people from different denominational, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds answered in differing ways. Furthermore, there is a disconnect between that portion of Americans who believe society is getting progressively worse and headed in the wrong direction, and those who overwhelmingly state that man is by nature basically good. If man is basically good, why is society getting worse?
The survey demonstrates that we do not know who God is and we do not know who we are. God is holy. We are sinful. We need the clear proclamation of the authoritative Word of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ. The results of this survey tell us that we need to remain faithful to proclaiming the holiness of God in all its fullness to as many people as possible.
Now that we have conducted the survey twice in America, we are planning to do something similar in other areas of the world to serve the church there. Ligonier is seeing growing global interest in Reformed theology and we are moving more discipleship resources around the world through English and translated materials as quickly as we are able to do so as God provides.
SN: Faithful Christians can look at these survey results and lament and decry the state of theology in America. Or, we can look at these results and engage our Great Commission work with a renewed urgency and purpose. We are taking the latter approach. It is easy to get caught up in trends and apply our resources to chasing after current news cycles. This survey reminds us of the necessity of teaching the foundational truths, of teaching on God’s holiness, on Christ’s person and work, on humanity’s true need to be saved from the wrath of God, and on the Bible’s authority—even in the twenty-first century.

So let me look now in a bit more detail at the 47 statements that were offered, and what sort of responses Americans of various beliefs – or no beliefs – gave. Consider a few of these:

Statement: Even the smallest sin deserves eternal damnation.
To whom: All participants
Findings: 61% of all participants strongly disagree with this statement.
Comment: The results jump off the page as the strongly disagree column spikes to 61%. That conviction is fundamentally a conviction about the character of God. If he is perfectly holy and just, he cannot let sin go unpunished. But God is no longer holy—in the minds of six out of ten Americans.

Statement: By the good deeds that I do, I partly contribute to earning my place in heaven.
To whom: Self-identified evangelicals
Findings: Church attendance has a dramatic effect on Evangelical convictions.
Comment: What we believe about God, about sin, about salvation, what we believe about ourselves as human beings, about other religions and about the Bible, what we believe about controversial social issues—all of these beliefs are influenced by our culture. But this survey indicates that regular exposure to Christian worship may have a tremendous counter-cultural effect. Evangelicals who attend church each week are far more likely to hold biblical convictions than their less regular peers. Infrequent church attendance leaves many uncertain about their beliefs and adrift theologically, even if they still consider themselves evangelical.

Statement: Sex outside of traditional marriage is a sin.
To whom: Self-identified evangelicals who attend church once or twice per month.
Findings: Only 52% of self-identified evangelicals who attend church once or twice per month strongly agree with this statement.
Comment: see below

Statement: Abortion is a sin.
To whom: Self-identified evangelicals who attend church once or twice per month.
Findings: Only 48% of self-identified evangelicals who attend church once or twice per month strongly agree with this statement.
Comment: These are shocking numbers. One intriguing pattern revealed here is that evangelicals whose church attendance has slipped from weekly, but has not fallen to less than once per month, are the least likely to hold strong convictions about these issues. Their peers with less frequent attendance hold stronger convictions.

These are just a handful of the findings. All in all they indicate a real decline in American theological understanding, both in and out of the church. Admittedly they reflect a particular theological viewpoint (Reformed theology), but they nonetheless give a good overall picture of the theological state of play in the US today.

Ligonier Ministries and LifeWay Research plan to do at least three more of these projects in order to get a ten-year view of things. While the findings are rather discouraging, and we can expect future surveys to come up with even gloomier results, the authors state that this is not an exercise in despair, but a stimulus to do more in the area of theological training.

Let me conclude with the words of three champions of good theology:

“If you do not listen to theology, that will not mean that you have no ideas about God. It will mean that you will have a lot of wrong ones.” C.S. Lewis

“Bad theology dishonors God and hurts people. Churches that sever the root of truth may flourish for a season, but they will wither eventually or turn into something besides a Christian church.” John Piper

“No Christian can avoid theology. Every Christian is a theologian. Perhaps not a theologian in the technical or professional sense, but a theologian nevertheless. The issue for Christians is not whether we are going to be theologians but whether we are going to be good theologians.” R. C. Sproul

Polemics Terms: Dissection of a Downgrade

This term, “Dissection of a Downgrade,” refers to the way in which Downgrade ordinarily happens within popular evangelicalism. The term was first coined in a 2013 article in the Reformation Montana Journal. As written in the Journal, which explains the phenomenon of Downgrade (the definition is linked above)….

Much Down Grade, Spurgeon argues in his rejoinder, is done with the very same excuses that we often hear today. Spurgeon writes, “Numbers of easy-minded people wink at error so long as it is committed by a clever man and a good-natured brother, who has so many fine points about him.

Essentially then, elaborating upon that which Spurgeon spoke, Downgrade happens ordinarily in three different steps:

(1) Someone we like or admire does or says something that is theologically troublesome, and because we like or admire them, we defend them anyway.

(2) Over time, in order to defend the person we like or admire, we end up going beyond a mere defense of the individual, and begin to defend the theologically troublesome thing that they have done or said.

(3) Over time, our defenses of that theologically troublesome word or deed causes us eventually to take part, or perhaps persuades others to take part, in that theologically troublesome word or deed.

When these tendencies are acted upon, it grows into full Downgrade. If put into terms of logic, this would be most akin to the “Appeal to Celebrity” fallacy.

For example, most would see the error in enrolling practicing Muslims into a seminary designed to equip Christian ministers. The vast sum of Christian leaders would rightfully think the idea absurd. However, when Paige Patterson was exposed for breaking Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s bylaws in 2013 to enroll Muslims in the SBC seminary, people defended it on the grounds that Patterson was a staunch inerrantist, doctrinal conservative, and did it for the sake of evangelism. Patterson was then given a standing ovation by Southern Baptist messengers, and SWBTS trustees changed the policies to allow the president to make similar exceptions in the future without breaking seminary bylaws.

For example, most would agree that deciding not to vote for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential race was an acceptable decision of Christian Liberty, but the vast sum of evangelicals would be aghast at any evangelical leader endorsing Hillary Clinton. And yet, when Thabiti Anyabwile (also known by his given name, Ron Brown) did that very thing, he was defended and supported in his decision to vote for a politician with a systemic worldview even (arguably) more foreign to the Bible than Donald Trump. After several weeks of defending Anyabwile on the grounds that he was an other-wise orthodox and sound Bible teacher, the Gospel Coalition and others ran articles in explicit endorsement of Hillary Clinton, and pressuring evangelical pastors to do the same.

For example, Russell Moore of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission has demonstrated a strong social progressivism on nearly every political issue other than abortion (and even then, has hired ERLC research fellows who claim that abortion is not murder and calling it so is “unchristlike”). Moore has said he would attend a gay wedding reception. In his push for amnesty for illegal aliens, he has called Jesus an illegal alien. He has partnered the ERLC with radical animal rights organizations. Moore has engaged heavily in ecumenism, leading multifaith prayers with Muslims and Sikhs. Moore has told Christian judges to resign rather than follow their conscience. Moore’s “softening tone on homosexuality” was noticed even by secular press outlets like the Wall Street Journal. Moore has served on the George Soros-funded evangelical immigration table. And yet, most criticism of Russell Moore is met with the defense that he is a well-respected theologian, is associated with Dr. Albert Mohler, and is a Southern Baptist (and so, the argument goes, he can’t be a social progressive). Under Moore’s leadership, it has become fashionable to now speak of “social justice” in the positive rather than the pejorative sense among younger pastors.

In all three examples, it might rightly be argued that enrolling Muslims in an evangelical seminary, endorsing Hillary Clinton for United States president, and popularizing social justice in a once-conservative denomination probably would never had been normalized without “Dissection of a Downgrade” occurring through the propagation of celebrity leaders and then defended by others, based upon their popularity as men of high character or theological prowess.

Dissection of a Downgrade is not merely a modern phenomenon, however. History is replete with examples of this occurring as early as the second century. For example, as the Christian Church was at large anathematizing Montanists for the Montanist Heresy, they found one notable defender in Tertullian, an otherwise orthodox and sound teacher. Without Tertullian’s support, Montanism would have most likely died out completely in the second century due to the Church’s explicit condemnations. However, when Montanism found a brief renewal in North Africa in the fifth century, followers of Montanism chose to go by Tertullian’s name rather than Montanus’ name. Tertullian’s tacit approval of the heresy lent credibility to the false teaching, keeping the heresy alive for many centuries to come. For many people, the sheer fact that Tertullian approved of Montanism was enough to consider it orthodox, and Montanists today continue to defend their beliefs by invoking Tertullian.

Greg Laurie thinks the worship music of Hillsong is Christian?

What’s the glaring fault with the advice given by Greg Laurie and his panel, to the young man who inquired of Hillsong? The glaring fault was they offered their opinions. Not facts. Not research. Not even the word of God. Just subjective opinions based on their own standards, standards we find so widespread within the “Evangelical Industrial Complex”.

This is incredibly misleading. Unlike Laurie and his panel, we use the words of Christ to prove why Hillsong music is inappropriate for Christians to sing in their churches:

“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
John 4:24 (Emphasis added.)

If we are worshiping God just because we selfishly like the music more than God, Christ condemns it,

You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:

“‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
in vain do…

The Abuse of Authority in Prosperity Gospel Churches

“In my assessment, there are three convictions in the hearts of abusive leaders that, in their minds, justify their abusive actions. These convictions are an over-realized eschatology, an improper interpretation and application of Scripture, and a prideful heart that desires self-worship.”

Throughout the duration of my service in the pastorate, I’ve regularly encountered believers bearing scars from wounds caused by church leaders. On a few occasions, these grievances occurred because the person ran to escape accountability for their sinful actions. But most of the time, these injuries happened because of their former leaders’ abuse of authority.

In almost every story, I saw a common thread: this abuse of authority took place in prosperity gospel churches.

A few years ago, I wrote an article called “Nine Marks of a Prosperity Gospel Church.” My comments on the last mark, biblical church leadership, struck a chord with more than a few readers who contacted me about their stories. These conversations—both in-person and online—grieved my heart deeply.

It became clear there’s not been enough reflection on the abuse of authority in prosperity gospel churches. I hope this article will jumpstart a worthwhile discussion that will ultimately recalibrate hearts toward a biblical understanding of authority as a good gift that God intends to be expressed in the context of a healthy local church.

In my assessment, there are three convictions in the hearts of abusive leaders that, in their minds, justify their abusive actions. These convictions are an over-realized eschatology, an improper interpretation and application of Scripture, and a prideful heart that desires self-worship.

After I unpack each of these convictions, I’ll conclude with a biblical rationale that considers the role of authority in the life of the believer, focusing on three of its God-intended sources: our sovereign God, the Scriptures, and biblically qualified under-shepherds.

Leaders of prosperity gospel churches proclaim an over-realized eschatology in their podcasts, sermons, and television programs. An over-realized eschatology is simply an insistence that God will answer fully in the present what he intends to fulfill fully in the future. For example, a pastor with an over-realized eschatology might teach God has promised the Christian—starting now—that he will put an end to all their financial, physical, or emotional difficulty.

Often, they’ll mishandle texts such as Proverbs 18:21, Jeremiah 29:11, Isaiah 53:5, Malachi 3:10, 2 Corinthians 8:9, or James 4:2. They’ll corral these passages together to form proof texts that allegedly support the idea of heaven’s riches being received in the lives of Christians today. When leaders of prosperity gospel churches thrive financially, it’s often attributed to their faithful walking in the promises of Abraham (Gal. 3:14) and used as a model for their followers who are then invited to share in similar blessings  . . . but only if they serve their leader faithfully.

The implications of this teaching damage people in at least three ways. First, the doctrine is believed to be biblically-based if the leader financially prospers. Second, members who aren’t living prosperous and healthy lives are assumed to be lacking in faith or failing to pay the right amount of tithes/offerings or living in rebellion against leadership. Third, it provides warrant for leaders to pursue material gain through any means possible (legal or illegal) in order to prosper.

Fundamentally, an over-realized eschatology is built on misinterpretation—and it results in a collapse of faith when trials come. To better understand how an over-realized eschatology relates to an abuse of authority, it would do us well to work through the popular phrase, “touch not the Lord’s anointed” in 1 Chronicles 16:22 (cf. Psalm 105:13–15). When the sins or false teachings of leaders in prosperity gospel churches are in conflict with 1 Timothy 3:1–7 or Titus 1:6–16 and members question them or attempt to hold them accountable, touch not the Lord’s anointed is often the rebuke shared by leaders or their armor-bearers. The application of this passage offers church leadership an impregnable hedge of protection against accountability or discipline.

In context, the words of David are meant to praise to God for his sovereign protection of Israel’s patriarchs from physical harm in order to preserve his holy nation. This passage is most certainly not creating a special class of God’s “anointed” who are exempt from biblical and congregational accountability. David himself was not exempt, as 2 Samuel 12 makes clear. In addition, 2 Corinthians 1:20–22 and 1 John 2:20–27 identify the Lord’s anointed as every believer the Holy Spirit indwells, not church leaders alone. Lastly, the prosperity gospel idea of leaders being exempt from accountability and discipline is in direct conflict with 1 Timothy 5:19–21.

Since every human heart is attracted and often addicted to idolatry, it’s foolish for church leaders to consider themselves immune to this struggle. However, I’ve found leaders in prosperity gospel churches uncover their desire for worship when they employ a savior’s mentality toward their people. I’ve seen this in situations where they posture themselves as God’s sole agent of distribution when it comes to blessing and direction. Members are then coaxed to seek out their leader, not Jesus, as their mediator in times of need.

This teaching gets woven into the tapestry of ministry through the creation and exploitation of the pseudo-office of armor-bearer. Prosperity gospel leaders build cohorts of disciples known as armor-bearers who are expected to submit to the demands of the pastor in order to be a blessing to the “man/woman of God.” Demands for the purpose of ministry may range from personal massages, sharing meals, paying bills, or rendering words of praise after the leader has preached. As a reward for the armor bearers’ “faithfulness,” they often receive promises of sharing the pastors’ mantle when he’s promoted in the kingdom/denomination, greater ministry opportunities, or even an inheritance of the church.

Christians and the American Election

I am not a prophet, nor the son of a prophet, but I am convinced that America is basically finished. Not only has it run with two of the most despicable, debauched, and diabolical candidates for president ever, but the American people have willed it to be so.

And even worse yet, those who claim to be Christians and conservatives have willed it to be so – at least with their undying support for the immoral pagan and lifelong lefty, Donald Trump. Yes I know, Clinton will destroy America. I get that, and have always got that.

But I also know that Trump will just as certainly destroy America, just as he has succeeded in destroying the Republican Party, the conservative brand, and what is left of evangelical Christianity in America. And I have made the case why I cannot support Trump in plenty of articles by now.

Yet I still get “conservatives” and “Christians” insisting I must run with this sham. I recently got an invite to join a “Christians for Trump” page. I wrote back saying it is exactly because I am a Christian and a conservative that I cannot be for Trump.

I assume my comment never saw the light of day on their site. I might as well have gotten a “Christians for Ahab” invite by those concerned about Jezebel. I might as well have gotten a “Christians for Mussolini” invite by those concerned about Hitler.

I might as well have gotten a “Christians for death by strychnine” invite by those concerned about death by arsenic. I might as well have gotten a “Christians for bowel cancer” invite by those concerned about liver cancer. Sorry, I will not shill for either devil – and devils they are.

Trashing Conservatism

But let me speak a bit more about these two candidates from hell – especially the liberal who is now pretending to be a Republican. This is the real tragedy unfolding here: the death of conservatism and worse yet, the death of Christianity. Historically conservatism has always been about key principles, values and beliefs which could not be jettisoned without destroying conservatism itself.

But that is exactly what we are now doing as we worship and support this lifelong liberal and Democrat supporter: we are disembowelling conservatism. I expect lefties to try to sabotage and destroy the conservative brand – but when so-called conservatives do it, you know we are now in big trouble.

A principled conservative I greatly respect, Ben Shapiro, has recently just written on all this. He offers four things being trashed as the “GOP Is Morphing Into Trump’s Fringey Troll Army”. His second is conservatism itself:

Conservatism Matters. It’s one thing to vote for Donald Trump while decrying his lack of conservatism, as Mark Levin does every day — that’s honest and praiseworthy. It’s another to pretend that his non-conservative agenda is conservative. Some high-profile conservatives have flipped on government paid maternity leave; a huge number of high-profile conservatives have flipped on free trade (leading to a massive drop in popularity among Republicans for free trade); an enormous number of high-profile conservatives have been warmed up to Vladimir Putin; virtually all major Republican voices have glossed over Trump’s ugly and nasty lie that Bush lied and people died in Iraq. Some heretofore conservatives have simply suggested that conservatism has failed, and we need Trumpian nationalist populism to replace it. Others have sighed and said that maybe the country has moved beyond conservatism altogether, so he’s the best we can do. So much for principle. Victory for a statist blowhard is more important, and if that requires sacrificing the notion of a conservative revival anytime in the near future, so be it.

And one of the key principles of conservatism (and of Christianity) is that character and integrity are vitally important. I have written about this for years now. Back in 1998 I penned a piece called “Character and Public Life”. In it I wrote:

Our real problems today are not economic problems. Nor are they political problems. Our real problems have to do with values, with character, with morality. A country can survive a current account deficit, but it cannot for long survive a value deficit. And the first place to begin in restoring this value deficit is to reaffirm character, integrity and morality, both private and public.
It is interesting to note that character was the only consideration enumerated by the American founding fathers as relevant to qualifications to serve in public office. A person’s politics, philosophy or ideology may be important, but the most important qualification is character. Without good character, good government is not possible.

In a recent column Jeff Jacoby puts it this way:

Would you hire a babysitter who lied with impunity? Would you choose a therapist who was a compulsive braggart? Would you want as your accountant or financial adviser someone who trailed the reek of corruption and bottomless avarice? Would you list your home with a real estate agent who routinely played fast and loose with rules that others must abide by? Would you attend the church of a pastor who spewed insults and threats and trafficked in delusional conspiracy theories? If so, you’ll have no trouble supporting Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton for president. But if you wouldn’t entrust your personal affairs to someone manifestly devoid of ethics and good character, how can you think of entrusting the nation’s highest office to either of the major-party candidates?
Over and over this year, Trump and Clinton have been described as the two worst presidential nominees in living memory — perhaps the worst matchup in US history. Both candidates espouse bad ideas and destructive policies, but that isn’t why they are so widely regarded as appalling choices for the White House. It is the candidates’ lack of integrity that makes so many Americans despair when they think of the upcoming election.

Or as Coleman Luck put it:

Conservative Christians hated the immorality of President Clinton. They hated the argument that what the man did in his private life, the awful, destructive choices he made, should not be considered when assessing his effectiveness as president. They want those destructive choices of the past to be used against Hillary Clinton right now. But they seem quite willing to accept the possibility of a different kind of immorality in their own candidate. They defend him without question no matter what he does or says, making the same kind of excuses for him that Democrats made years ago. Far worse, some consider a vicious way of treating people in business to be a strength that qualifies him to be leader of the free world.

As Shapiro concludes his article: “Trumpism corrupts, and absolute Trumpism corrupts absolutely. If Trump has done such heavy groundwork in tearing apart the conservative movement and exposing its principles for a hollow shell in just a year, imagine what President Trump will do.”

Trashing Christianity

trump-22As a Bible-believing Christian, this shocks me and sickens me most of all. Countless people claiming to be followers of the Lord Jesus Christ have effectively sold their souls to the devil in their irrational, unbiblical and shameful promotion of Trump.

They might as well rewrite the Bible to fit their Trump-worshipping image: “For me to live is Trump…” So many of these Trump zealots really are convinced that Trump is actually the messiah America needs. They actually believe all the ridiculous rhetoric coming out of his mouth.

“Make America great again”? Ha! All that Trump wants to do is make himself great. Yet countless Christians have fallen for this hook, line and sinker. The levels of gullibility, cluelessness, and the ability to be easily conned, deceived and hoodwinked are off the charts here.

They will believe anything this guy says – ANYTHING. We have seen demagogues come before promising everything the people wanted to hear. They ended up destroying half the world in the process. It seems we refuse to learn the lessons of history.

These “Christians” have simply chucked out everything they used to believe about the importance of integrity, of honesty, of humility, of godliness, of righteousness, and of servanthood. Instead they have eagerly embraced everything Scripture warns against and condemns in the strongest of terms: arrogance, pride, deceit, reliance on power and the flesh, ungodly alliances, etc.

If they simply read the prophets and let their truths sink in, there would be no way they could keep spruiking for this enemy of everything a holy God stands for. They would need to repent and renounce their false god. But it seems getting Trump into the White House is the only thing that matters to these folks

Well I have news for them. So does Jesus. He made it crystal clear that we can get everything we crave for in this world, yet still lose it all, big time: “And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?”

I realise of course that even daring to say such things will enrage the Trumpites. I have seen them in action far too often. It is frightening in the extreme. Even those who claim to be Christians can be just as hateful, nasty, and ferocious as they rip to shreds anyone who dares to disagree with them on Trump.

I know this full well – I have been on the receiving end of this far too often. These are among some of the most obnoxious and idolatrous displays I have ever encountered. Diabolical really. I have lost count of how many friends I have lost over this.

And I am talking about Christians here. You know the ones that Jesus said the world would know that Christ is real by the love and unity they have one for another? I would have thought the only reason Christian friends would have a right to turn on me in disgust would be if I denied the deity of Christ, trashed the Bible, or slept with a thousand women.

But no, there is evidently something far worse than that, which means I must be excommunicated, I must be anathema, I must be forever rejected: daring to not idolise their hero Trump. Indeed, just minutes ago I had yet another “believer” angrily attack me for daring to have a different point of view on this. Hmm, so this is the test of Christian orthodoxy nowadays?

Sorry, but if believers want to scream, “We want Barabbas” that is up to them. If they want to put all their hope, trust and allegiance in this New York liberal, and turn against all who will not, well, that is up to them. But I will have no part in it. None whatsoever.

Concluding Thoughts

I take my Christianity with the utmost seriousness. And I seek to be a principled and consistent conservative. For those reasons, the thought of Clinton getting in makes me sick. But the thought of Trump getting in also makes me sick.

As one wit has quipped: “The real problem with the upcoming election is one of them is going to win”. Being a Christian and a conservative I must fully concur with the words of Coleman Luck:

What kind of country do we want? Do honesty and integrity mean anything? Should a person’s word mean anything? Or is it all just about winning, the Art of the Deal? Perhaps Mr. Trump is the right man for the job, a man who represents everything that this nation has become. If that’s true and if you are willing to set aside every “Judeo-Christian principle” to hire a man just because you think he will “get the job done” at least be honest. The principles you say you espouse don’t really mean anything at all.

And I also totally endorse the sentiments of Jeff Jacoby:

Clinton and Trump are practically defined by their cupidity, deceit, and self-righteousness. For Americans to elevate anyone so reprehensible to the presidency would be to humiliate themselves before the world. It would also be a sign that the great American experiment in republican self-government may have run its course.
At the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, as Benjamin Franklin was leaving Independence Hall, a woman approached him with a question. “Well, Doctor,” she asked, “what have we got — a republic or a monarchy?” Franklin’s famous answer: “A republic, if you can keep it.” Well, we kept our republic for 225 years. Whether it survives the 45th president of the United States is an open question.

Yes exactly right. In my view here is the bottom line concerning this ugly and despicable election: Americans have rejected God and have preferred to put all their faith and trust in a pair of immoral, arrogant, decadent pagan leaders instead. Thus there can be no winner here. We all lose.

Regardless of who gets over the line on November 8, it will be a case of God letting the Americans have what they want, but sending them “leanness to their souls” as Psalm 106:15 warns about. I will not have blood on my hands by supporting either one.

Here I stand, I can do no other.

All in Christ are so according to the Sovereign Grace of God

Possessing the Treasure

by Mike Ratliff

11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all. 1 Chronicles 29:11 (NASB)

I was involved in a theological “discussion” quite some time ago in which one who disagreed with the Doctrines of Grace attempted to say that his belief that Man’s Free Will was sacrosanct and God could not violate it was Biblical Christianity. After much consternation and prayer on how to respond to that that I simply told him that he was in unbelief. He shot back that that was not the case! He told me that he had his thinkology all lined up and was in need of nothing more than that. I responded that he was in unbelief about God’s…
