February 3 The Joy of Exalting Christ

“Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus . . .” (Phil. 1:1).

✧✧✧

If exalting Christ is your goal, anything that furthers the gospel will bring you joy.

Next to the Lord Himself, Paul is perhaps the greatest illustration that joy is not necessarily related to one’s circumstances.

Paul wrote to the Philippians from a prison cell, and yet he spoke of joy and contentment. His life was a series of difficulties and life-threatening situations (see 2 Cor. 11:23–33). In fact the Lord, shortly after confronting him on the road to Damascus, said, “[Paul] is a chosen instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; for I will show him how much he must suffer for My name’s sake” (Acts 9:15–16). Yet, in every situation Paul found cause for rejoicing.

His compelling desire to exalt Christ drove him to endure trial after trial. When Christ was exalted, Paul rejoiced. That was evident in Philippi where, after a brief ministry in which God redeemed a businesswoman named Lydia and expelled demons from a slave girl, Paul and Silas were falsely accused, unjustly beaten, and thrown into prison. Even that didn’t stifle their joy, for “about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them” (Acts 16:25).

That was such a powerful testimony to the joy of the Lord that soon afterward the jailer and his entire family believed the gospel and were saved.

Even when imprisonment prevented Paul from ministering as effectively as he desired, and when others usurped his apostleship and preached Christ out of envy and strife, he remained undaunted (Phil. 1:18). His circumstances were secondary to the priority of exalting Christ.

Is that your perspective? It can be! If your priority is to exalt Christ in every circumstance, whatever furthers that purpose will bring you joy.

✧✧✧

Suggestions for Prayer:  Ask the Lord to help you maintain the priority of exalting Christ in every area of your life. ✧ If you feel envy or resentment toward others who proclaim the gospel (Phil. 1:15–17), confess that, and learn to rejoice whenever Christ is exalted.

For Further Study: Read Exodus 15:1–21 and Psalm 99. How did Moses, Miriam, and the psalmist exalt the Lord?[1]

FEBRUARY 3 TO BE CHRISTLIKE: WALK IN THE SPIRIT

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come…He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

JOHN 16:13, 14

If we are going to reproduce Christ on earth and be Christlike and show forth Christ, what is our greatest need?

We must have the Spirit of Christ!

If we are going to be the children of God, we must have the Spirit of the Father to breathe in our hearts and breathe through us. That is why we must have the Spirit of God! That is why the church must have the Spirit of Christ!

The Christian church is called to live above her own ability. She is called to live on a plane so high that no human being can live like that of his own ability and power. The humblest Christian is called to live a miracle, a life that is a moral and spiritual life with such intensity and such purity that no human being can do it—only Jesus Christ can do it. He wants the Spirit of Christ to come to His people—an invasion from above affecting us mentally, morally and spiritually!

The Holy Spirit brings the wonderful mystery that is God to us, and presents Him to the human spirit. The Spirit is our Teacher, and if He does not teach us, we never can know. He is our Illuminator, and if He does not turn on the light, we never can see. He is the Healer of our deaf ears, and if He does not touch our ears, we never can hear!

The Holy Ghost bestows upon us a beatitude beyond compare. He asks nothing except that we be willing to listen, willing to obey![1]

This ‘n’ That

  • Loving your neighbor means you’re willing to tell him or her the truth.
  • An interesting anecdote about a conversation with Jurgen Moltmann.
  • There are some vaccines that I don’t necessarily advocate for, such as the flu vaccine. But when it comes to something like measles, please vaccinate your kids.
  • Oh my. This is the world we live in. You seriously cannot make this stuff up.
  • I don’t get it. The man’s disability obviously didn’t prevent him from raping a girl, so why should it prevent him from going to prison for his crime? So wrong.
  • This is amazing, multiplied by 1000. HT to Phil Johnson.
  • Are you eager to be discerning, but aren’t very interested in the doctrinal work that builds discernment? Yeah, that’s a problem.
  • Here’s your weekly dose of adorable.
  • I would love to meet this woman. Based on her words, she obviously has a belief in God, as her Jewish heritage would promote, but the article does not reveal if she has faith in the Savior, Jesus Christ. Let’s pray that, if she has not heard the gospel, she will!
  • This will simultaneously break your heart and cause you to praise God, for His ways are higher and loftier than ours. Will you pray for our brother and sister as they walk through this difficult time?
  • Let’s be content to be ordinary, and let our extraordinary God be, well, extraordinary!
  • This looks like an interesting read, but I won’t know until/unless it comes out on Kindle. I’ve moved too many times with too many boxes of books to keep collecting unnecessarily. Besides, they gather less dust in electronic format.
  • Charles Finney. Sigh. So. Much. Damage.
  • Praise God for the second Adam!

The gospel is not a doctrine of the tongue, but of life. It cannot be grasped by reason and memory only, but it is fully understood when it possesses the whole soul and penetrates to the inner recesses of the heart. —John Calvin

Russia ‘developing’ undersea nuclear-armed torpedo…Just as the White House is caught in a political minefield over the Russia investigation, the Pentagon is taking its toughest line yet against Russia’s resurgent nuclear forces. In its newly released Nuclear Posture Review, the Defense Department has focused much of its multi-billion nuclear effort on an updated nuclear deterrence focused on Russia. “Russia considers the United States and the North

Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to be the principal threats to its contemporary geopolitical ambitions,” the report says. “The Defense Intelligence Agency currently estimates Russia has a stockpile of 2,000 “non-strategic” nuclear weapons including short-range ballistic missiles, gravity bombs and depth charges that can go on medium range bomber aircraft,” according to the report.

16 More children dead from flu…Sixteen flu-related deaths were reported Friday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in its weekly flu report. This brings the total number of pediatric flu-related deaths to 53 for the season, which began in October. According to the report, influenza activity is now widespread in 48 states and Puerto Rico, down from 49 states in the previous two weeks. Oregon joined Hawaii in lower activity

levels for the week ending January 27. “Our latest tracking data indicate that flu activity is still high and widespread across most of the nation and increasing overall,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the acting CDC director. “So far this year, the cumulative rate of hospitalizations is the highest since we’ve been tracking in this way, which goes back to 2010. Dow drops 666 points and posts its worst week since 2016

Dow drops 666 points and posts its worst week since 2016The Dow Jones industrial average plunged 2.5 percent Friday — closing down 666 points — and suffered its worst week in two years as concerns over rising interest rates and inflation from an overheated economy triggered a long-feared sell-off. It was the worst day for stocks since President Trump took office — and a stark reversal from the optimism that has propelled the markets higher for most of the

past year. The market has been on a historic nine-year bull run. The U.S. and world economies are so strong that people think the situation cannot last. Concerns were fueled by a Labor Department report that wages in January were 2.9 percent higher than a year ago and unemployment held at 4.1 percent. A tightening labor market sparked fears that interest rates will rise. READ MORE

Trump may present mideast peace plan even if Palestinians won’t negotiate…

Trump may present mideast peace plan even if Palestinians won’t negotiate…The White House is considering presenting President Trump’s Middle East peace plan even if the crisis with the Palestinian Authority continues and Palestinian President Abbas refuses to come to the negotiating table, senior U.S. officials tell me. The bottom line: The U.S. officials say the administration won’t impose on the Israelis or Palestinians to accept the plan, but may release it so the parties and the international community can judge it at face value. The officials said no decisions were made yet in this regard but stressed the president and his “peace team” are not ruling out this option.

One senior U.S. official told me: “Since it’s not done, we haven’t decided yet how we are going to put it forward and what happens if one of the sides isn’t ready to come to the table. We are not there yet. But we are very optimistic that all relevant countries who want to support a peace agreement between the two sides are still waiting for our plan, want to work with us and realize we cannot be replaced. Despite all of the false reports about our plan, we are confident it will be beneficial to both sides and both peoples.” READ MORE

Lava spreads more than 2 miles from Philippine volcano as eruptions become more intense

Posted: 02 Feb 2018 09:56 AM PST

Lava spreads more than 2 miles from Philippine volcano as eruptions become more intenseLava flowing out a Philippine volcano has spread up to 3.6 kilometers (2.2 miles) since it began intense eruptions more than two weeks ago. Streaks of red glowed atop the summit of Mount Mayon during a mild eruption Thursday morning as the moon set, hours after a blue moon and supermoon coincided with a lunar eclipse. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said lava fountains and emissions of gas and ash have been sporadic.

The eruptions fed lava flows in two areas that already exceed 3 kilometers (1.8 miles). The danger zone around Mayon extends 8 kilometers (5 miles), though authorities have struggled to keep villagers from returning to check on their homes and farms and tourists from trying to photograph the volcano’s dramatic displays. Mayon in northeastern Albay province has been erupting for more than two weeks, forcing more than 84,000 villagers to flee to crowded emergency shelters. Scientists fear a more violent eruption could be imminent. READ MORE

Franklin Graham Warns That Trump Could Face “Government Coup”

Franklin Graham Warns That Trump Could Face “Government Coup”Franklin Graham, one of the nation’s most prominent Christian leaders, said Wednesday on the “Todd Starnes Radio Show” that the Trump presidency faces a grave domestic threat. “I believe we are in a coup d’etat,” Graham told Starnes. “There are people in this country who are wanting to destroy the president and take over the government by force.”

Graham, the president and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse, warned that there are forces at work who want to “wrestle control of the government” away from Trump. “They are not going to use bullets. They are using the media—to plant thoughts in people’s minds that he’s incompetent, that he’s dangerous, that you can’t trust him with nuclear weapons, that he is mentally unstable,” Graham said. Graham called on the nation to pray for the president and the vice president. READ MORE

Should Christians Avoid Yoga?

Posted: 02 Feb 2018 07:05 AM PST

Should Christians Avoid Yoga?(By Dan Andros) A new debate hit the internet today and it put yoga squarely in the crosshairs. It all started with this tweet observation from writer Matt Walsh: “It’s kind of amazing to see all of the Christians who think nothing of going to a yoga class. There are many excellent ways to get in shape that do not involve participating in Hindu worship.” – Matt Walsh via Twitter

And with that, the yoga Twitter war began. Walsh took issue by linking yoga to Hindu worship, which appears to be a fair assertion. The debate, however, is hardly anything new. The issue was raised by the BBC a few years ago, interestingly by a muslim woman, not by a Christian. They also included concerns about practicing it from a number of other religions:

“When I told my family and a few friends, they did not react positively,” she recalls. “They were very confused as to why I wanted to do it – that it might be going against Islam.” Their suspicions about yoga are shared by many Muslims, Christians and Jews around the world and relate to yoga’s history as an ancient spiritual practice with connections to Hinduism and Buddhism. If I was to kneel down does that mean I’m praying – or am I just kneeling? READ MORE

Emergency Rooms Expand Into Waiting Rooms as Flu WorsensNurses Kristy Haynes, left, and Crysta Swift on Monday look over supplies inside a temporary mobile unit set up outside Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta to help handle the ever-growing number of flu cases. Photo: David Goldman/Associated Press Emergency departments across the U.S. have been slammed in recent weeks by an onslaught of flu visits, forcing hospitals to devise new spaces to house patients, to restrict visitors and to postpone elective surgeries.

Visits to hospital emergency departments, urgent care centers and other outpatient clinics by people with flu symptoms have been skyrocketing for several weeks. As of mid-January, such visits had surpassed every flu season except 2009-10, when a new flu strain caused a global pandemic. The dominant strain this season, H3N2, is particularly virulent, and the vaccine isn’t very effective against it. NYC Health & Hospitals has seen a 40% increase in the number of people being tested for the flu compared with this time last year, according to Sean Studer, deputy chief medical officer of the group, which runs New York City’s public hospitals, clinics and long-term care facilities. Former insider claims ‘US Government has ‘crystal clear pics of UFOs chased by military’

Former insider claims ‘US Government has ‘crystal clear pics of UFOs chased by military’The US Government is keeping “crystal-clear” images of “real UFOs” chased by military pilots from public view it was sensationally claimed today.  Nick Pope, a former investigator of the UFO phenomenon for the British MoD, was reacting to claims made by experts that recent “UFO” footage released by the US Government was probably just a plane. Yesterday, Express.co.uk revealed that in a radio podcast of the Big Picture Science Skeptic Check, produced at the Search for Extraterrestrial

Intelligence (SETI) Institute, a panel of experts looked at the shocking radar video footage and the consensus was the object shown was just infrared heat from plane engines misidentified by US Navy pilots. The US-based SETI Institute is a collective of scientists looking for evidence of alien life in the cosmos. However, Mr Pope argued the footage should not be dismissed by SETI so readily. He said: “I saw the SETI Institute’s sceptical comments about the Pentagon UFO videos and thought I’d chip in, as I think they’ve misunderstood or failed to take account of something fairly important about this. PROPHECY WATCH: Is Turkey Moving Closer to the Gog and Magog Alliance?

PROPHECY WATCH: Is Turkey Moving Closer to the Gog and Magog Alliance?(By Tzippe Barrow)There’s been plenty written about the fulfillment of end-time prophecies in the days in which we’re living. The changes that have taken place in Turkey over the past decade and a half could possibly indicate the latest piece of the puzzle falling into place. Before President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ascent to power, Turkey and Israel enjoyed a close working relationship, from tourism to trade to the military and beyond. That began to change when Erdogan was elected prime minister in 2003. Over time, he

became increasingly open about his plan to reshape Turkey into an Islamic state. He wasn’t subtle and indeed was quick to oppress and/or arrest anyone who opposed him. One incident followed another. CBN News reported on many of them. While trying to keep an open door with NATO and possible membership in the EU, Erdogan gravitated toward Islamic leaders in Iran, Lebanon, Syria and elsewhere. He extended invitations to senior officials of known terror groups like Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. He criticized Israel at every opportunity and praised Islamic endeavors. READ MORE

8 Steps the Church Should Take to Prepare Communities for Social Collapse

8 Steps the Church Should Take to Prepare Communities for Social Collapse(By Joseph Mattera) For the past several years, a growing number of prophetically and culturally astute leaders are predicting the decline of the USA. Also, books like the New York Times best-seller The Harbinger have issued dire warnings to America based on biblical principles and Old Testament prophetic passages. There have been predictions as dark as the total breakup of our union preceded by mass rioting and chaos (catalyzed by runs on banks and economic calamities), to a severe economic crisis far worse than what happened globally in 2008.

All in all, most of those to whom I speak portend a major financial correction is soon coming in the market. Since the 2012 presidential election, there have been many ominous signs of huge American decline in global influence: China and Russia have been saber-rattling and spewing out military threats; the NSA spy scandal has alienated our allies and further validated our ideological enemies; the military is experiencing mass cutbacks in spending; Iran is continuing to move forward with their nuclear program with impunity; and the federal government continues to pump billions of printed dollars into the economy to superficially keep the nation afloat. Nearly One Million People Surrender to Christ During Reinhard Bonnke’s Farewell Crusade

Nearly One Million People Surrender to Christ During Reinhard Bonnke’s Farewell CrusadeEvangelist Reinhard Bonnke’s ministry, Christ for All Nations (CfaN), says 845,875 Nigerians accepted Jesus Christ during his final farewell crusade held late last year in Nigeria. “These new converts are being ushered into the 8,000 participating churches, to be followed up and discipled into the kingdom of God,” the ministry website claimed. The 78-year-old Bonnke shared his farewell messages in Lagos in November 2017, drawing 1.7 million people to evangelistic meetings held over five days. “We utilize a

sophisticated follow-up system, with hundreds of computers for data input and tens of thousands of cell phone calls each day welcoming the new converts into the kingdom of God, introducing them to the particular church that they will attend and to the pastor as well,” said Peter Vandenberg, vice president of CfaN. According to Christ for All Nations, the effects of the crusade are still reverberating across the country months later. “Hundreds of participating pastors reported that on the first Sunday following the crusade, they were flooded with thousands of new church members,” Vandenberg said on CfaN’s website. What is The Gospel?

Selected Scriptures

Code: A335

With that brief question Jesus Christ confronted His followers with the most important issue they would ever face. He had spent much time with them and made some bold claims about His identity and authority. Now the time had come for them either to believe or deny His teachings.

Who do you say Jesus is? Your response to Him will determine not only your values and lifestyle, but your eternal destiny as well.

Consider what the Bible says about Him:

JESUS IS GOD

While Jesus was on earth there was much confusion about who He was. Some thought He was a wise man or a great prophet. Others thought He was a madman. Still others couldn’t decide or didn’t care. But Jesus said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). That means He claimed to be nothing less than God in human flesh.

Many people today don’t understand that Jesus claimed to be God. They’re content to think of Him as little more than a great moral teacher. But even His enemies understood His claims to deity. That’s why they tried to stone Him to death (John 5:18; 10:33) and eventually had Him crucified (John 19:7).

C.S. Lewis observed, “You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to” (Mere Christianity [Macmillan, 1952], pp. 40-41).

If the biblical claims of Jesus are true, He is God!

JESUS IS HOLY

God is absolutely and perfectly holy (Isaiah 6:3), therefore He cannot commit or approve of evil (James 1:13).

As God, Jesus embodied every element of God’s character. Colossians 2:9 says, “In Him all the fulness of Deity dwells in bodily form.” He was perfectly holy (Hebrews 4:15). Even His enemies couldn’t prove any accusation against Him (John 8:46)

God requires holiness of us as well. First Peter 1:16 says, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

JESUS IS THE SAVIOR

Our failure to obey God—to be holy—places us in danger of eternal punishment (2 Thessalonians 1:9). The truth is, we cannot obey Him because we have neither the desire nor the ability to do so. We are by nature rebellious toward God (Ephesians 2:1-3). The Bible calls our rebellion “sin.” According to Scripture, everyone is guilty of sin: “There is no man who does not sin” (1 Kings 8:46). “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). And we are incapable of changing our sinful condition. Jeremiah 13:23 says, “Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil.”

That doesn’t mean we’re incapable of performing acts of human kindness. We might even be involved in various religious or humanitarian activities. But we’re utterly incapable of understanding, loving, or pleasing God on our own. The Bible says, “There is none righteous, not even one; there is none who understands, there is none who seeks for God; all have turned aside, together they have become useless; there is none who does good, there is not even one” (Romans 3:10-12).

God’s holiness and justice demand that all sin be punished by death: “The soul who sins will die” (Ezekiel 18:4). That’s hard for us to understand because we tend to evaluate sin on a relative scale, assuming some sins are less serious than others. However, the Bible teaches that all acts of sin are the result of sinful thinking and evil desires. That’s why simply changing our patterns of behavior can’t solve our sin problem or eliminate its consequences. We need to be changed inwardly so our thinking and desires are holy

Jesus is the only one who can forgive and transform us, thereby delivering us from the power and penalty of sin: “There is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

Even though God’s justice demands death for sin, His love has provided a Savior, who paid the penalty and died for sinners: “Christ … died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, in order that He might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18). Christ’s death satisfied the demands of God’s justice, thereby enabling Him to forgive and save those who place their faith in Him (Romans 3:26). John 3:16 says, “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” He alone is “our great God and Savior” (Titus 2:13).

JESUS IS THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE OBJECT OF SAVING FAITH

Some people think it doesn’t matter what you believe as long as you’re sincere. But without a valid object your faith is useless

If you take poison—thinking it’s medicine—all the faith in the world won’t restore your life. Similarly, if Jesus is the only source of salvation, and you’re trusting in anyone or anything else for your salvation, your faith is useless.

Many people assume there are many paths to God and that each religion represents an aspect of truth. But Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me” (John 14:6). He didn’t claim to be one of many equally legitimate paths to God, or the way to God for His day only. He claimed to be the only way to God—then and forever.

JESUS IS LORD

Contemporary thinking says man is the product of evolution. But the Bible says we were created by a personal God to love, serve, and enjoy endless fellowship with Him

The New Testament reveals it was Jesus Himself who created everything (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16). Therefore He also owns and rules everything (Psalm 103:19). That means He has authority over our lives and we owe Him absolute allegiance, obedience, and worship.

Romans 10:9 says, “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.” Confessing Jesus as Lord means humbly submitting to His authority (Philippians 2:10-11). Believing that God has raised Him from the dead involves trusting in the historical fact of His resurrection—the pinnacle of Christian faith and the way the Father affirmed the deity and authority of the Son (Romans 1:4; Acts 17:30-31).

True faith is always accompanied by repentance from sin. Repentance is more than simply being sorry for sin. It is agreeing with God that you are sinful, confessing your sins to Him, and making a conscious choice to turn from sin and pursue holiness (Isaiah 55:7). Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15); and “If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine” (John 8:31).

It isn’t enough to believe certain facts about Christ. Even Satan and his demons believe in the true God (James 2:19), but they don’t love and obey Him. Their faith is not genuine. True saving faith always responds in obedience (Ephesians 2:10).

Jesus is the sovereign Lord. When you obey Him you are acknowledging His lordship and submitting to His authority. That doesn’t mean your obedience will always be perfect, but that is your goal. There is no area of your life that you withhold from Him.

JESUS IS THE JUDGE

All who reject Jesus as their Lord and Savior will one day face Him as their Judge: “God is now declaring to men that all everywhere should repent, because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead” (Acts 17:30-31).

Second Thessalonians 1:7-9 says, “The Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.”

HOW WILL YOU RESPOND?

Who does the Bible say Jesus is? The living God, the Holy One, the Savior, the only valid object of saving faith, the sovereign Lord, and the righteous Judge.

Who do you say Jesus is? That is the inescapable question. He alone can redeem you—free you from the power and penalty of sin. He alone can transform you, restore you to fellowship with God, and give your life eternal purpose. Will you repent and believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?

16 Bombshells In the Nunes Memo the Media Does Not Want You to Know About

(John Nolte – Breitbart)  In its partisan zeal to protect the ongoing witch hunt against President Trump, our Nixonian media went into hyper-drive last week to ensure that the unethical and un-American behavior of President Obama’s FBI and Justice Department remained covered up from the public.

After this cynical effort failed with the release of the Nunes memo Friday, the media quickly switched tactics and is now working feverishly to muddy the waters about the horror show revealed in the memo.

To begin with, it is obvious that a hysterical talking point about declaring the release of the memo a “Constitutional Crisis” has been spread far and wide… Naturally, the “constitutional crisis” in question is not the wrongdoing committed by federal law enforcement. Instead, because we are now deep within the head of the media’s fabricated reality where wrong is right and up is down, the “constitutional crisis” is that government wrongdoing was uncovered.

One way the media is hoping to shield the federal government from accountability for its indefensible lies, cover-ups, and civil rights violations is to muddy the waters; to distract us with nonsense so that we lose focus on the sins committed by an FBI and Department of Justice (DOJ) that abused its power and public trust in unprecedented ways.

Here are 16 things the media does not want you to know about the Nunes memo:
  1. The so-called Russian Dossier, the creation of Fusion GPS and former British spy Christopher Steele, is a political document — namely, opposition research, created for the Democrat National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.
  2. Using what it knew was opposition research paid for by the Clinton campaign, in October of 2016, the FBI and DOJ obtained a FISA warrant from the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to install a wiretap to spy on Hillary Clinton’s opponent — the Trump campaign, specifically Carter Page. This spying would last for a year.
  3. It should be noted that the FISA court was set up to stop foreign terrorists. The fact that the FBI and DOJ would use this court to not only wiretap an American but to wiretap a presidential campaign belies belief. Why Obama’s FBI and DOJ used this court as opposed to a normal court is obvious. As you will see below, a normal court probably would have denied the wiretap.
  4. Worse still, in the summer of 2016, Obama’s DOJ had already opened a counter-intelligence investigation into the Trump campaign. The fact that nothing from that months-old partisan investigation was used to obtain the Page wiretap is revealing.
  5. According to the Nunes memo, an “essential” part of the FISA wiretap application was the Steele dossier, which again is a partisan political document created for the Clinton campaign.
  6. So essential was this partisan dossier, Andrew McCabe, the disgraced former-Deputy Director of the FBI, admitted in December that “no surveillance warrant would have been sought” without the dossier. View article →

SBC Voices Claims Russell Moore is a Conservative (lol)

(Pulpit & Pen News) That’s the response that is due the recent SBC Echoes post defending the former Democratic Staffer, animal rights activist, Martin Luther King celebrator, Cultural Marxist, illegal immigrant amnesty-supporter and George Soros partner, Russell Moore. In polemics there’s a term called “website orthodox,” and it’s a term with which anyone capable of entry-level discernment should be familiar. Website orthodox refers to someone who has an orthodox statement of faith hyperlinked on their website, to which they can point and deflect from their criticism. For example, IHOP has a perfectly orthodox statement of faith on their website, but in reality, they’re a circus cult and freakshow sub-Christian sect.

In the case of Russell Moore, he’s “website conservative.” On paper, the man looks like a conservative. He’s clean-cut, he comes from Southern Seminary and has men like Albert Mohler and other bonified conservatives in his entourage, and he can put together an “agenda” for the coming year that passes the conservatism test. In reality, Russell Moore is a radical leftist – with a few exceptions on a few issues – and has done more to drag the Southern Baptist Convention to liberal progressivism than anyone since Conservative Resurgence tossed men like Moore from the Convention. For the less-discerning, more-sycophantic, simple-minded brethren over at SBC Echoes, the Russell Moore they see on paper (papers that pass through his public relations department) is conservative.

Adam Blosser writes:

You may have heard that some among our Southern Baptist Convention are intent on bearing false witness against Russell Moore and the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.  Dr. Moore is accused of pushing a progressive agenda at the ERLC.  He must be stopped, it is argued.

Well, the ERLC has just released their 2018 Legislative Agenda.  If this is the new progressive agenda, then sign me up!  I am hoping that someone with contacts to Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi can pass it along to them so they will know what things to work toward in 2018.  I’m not sure they know that they are supposed to be supporting things like the sanctity of human life and religious liberty.

Let’s review Russell Moore and the facts surrounding him, to determine who exactly has “bore false witness” against him. View article →

William Lane Craig lectures on the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus

WINTERY KNIGHT

Sherlock Holmes and John Watson: let's take a look at the facts Sherlock Holmes and John Watson: let’s take a look at the facts

Here is Dr. William Lane Craig giving a long-form argument for the historical event of the resurrection of Jesus, and taking questions from the audience.

The speaker introduction goes for 6 minutes, then Dr. Craig speaks for 35 minutes, then it’s a period of questions and answers with the audience. The total length is 93 minutes, so quite a long period of Q&A. The questions in the Q&A period are quite good.

Introduction:

  • Many people who are willing to accept God’s existence are not willing to accept the God of Christianity
  • Christians need to be ready to show that Jesus rose from the dead as a historical event
  • Private faith is fine for individuals, but when dealing with the public you have to have evidence
  • When making the case, you cannot assume that your audience accepts the Bible…

Get Ready, Youth Group Leaders: Teens Twice as Likely to Identify as Atheist or LGBT

This generation is more sensitive to LGBT issues overall, with 37 percent saying their gender and sexuality is “very important” to their sense of self, compared to 28 percent of their Gen X parents.

Imagine Generation Z—the 70 million kids born between 1999 and 2015—and you probably picture them staring at their devices. A bunch of app-savvy, tech-addicted teens who never knew a time before smartphones.

Half of Protestant youth pastors consider technology and social media the defining factor of this latest generation, but a new study released today by Barna Group sheds new light on striking social and demographic trends: Teenagers in Gen Z are at least twice as likely as American adults to identify as LGBT or as atheist.

These are important markers of identity among the youngest segment of America, and pose new ministry challenges for the church.

While the latest Gallup poll reported only 4.1 percent of Americans—and 7.3 percent of millennials—identify as LGBT, Barna found that 12 percent of Gen Z teens described their sexual orientation as something other than heterosexual, with 7 percent identifying as bisexual.

This generation is more sensitive to LGBT issues overall, with 37 percent saying their gender and sexuality is “very important” to their sense of self, compared to 28 percent of their Gen X parents.

Additionally, about a third of teens know someone who is transgender, and the majority (69%) say it’s acceptable to be born one gender and to feel like another.

Though teens exploring sexual identity have long been a part American churches and youth groups, they haven’t always been this open about their identity and willing to address it so transparently.

“It is a new challenge for student ministry leaders, because there is more discussion in the public square regarding LGBT issues,” Ben Trueblood, director of student ministry for LifeWay Christian Resources, told CT.

“In the past, it was possible for difficult issues like this to be brushed aside or go unaddressed entirely. But that approach cripples the purpose of student ministry,” he said. “Now, student ministry leaders are forced to teach what the Bible says on these issues, as well as equip teenagers to respond biblically.”

Today’s teens need that direction from church leaders as they grow more likely to identify as atheist and less likely to identify as Christian than their parents and older peers.

Among Gen Z members between 13 and 18 years old, 13 percent consider themselves atheists, compared to just 6 percent of adults overall.

Meanwhile, 59 percent of Gen Z identifies as Christian, compared to 68 percent of adults. Only 1 in 11 teens is considered by Barna to be an “engaged Christian,” a category the research organization uses for those whose beliefs and practices are shaped by their faith (i.e., not “Christian in name only”).

Are you easy prey for false prophets? (redux)

artic_wolf

The following post was first published on my blog on August 23, 2013. With the rise of men and women calling themselves prophets, many people need to hear its warning more than ever.

The Bible is clear: false prophets are wolves that devour unsuspecting sheep.

Jesus said:

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” (Matthew 7:15)

And the apostle Paul had this to say about false teachers.

“I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.” (Acts 20:29-30).

Despite these clear warnings from an apostle and even Jesus himself, many people are still naive to the threat. So, my question for you is, “Are you easy prey for false prophets?”

The answer is yes if any of the following statements–drawn from Scripture–describe you.

  • You think God won’t allow you to be deceived. I’ve often heard it said, by people in the New Apostolic Reformation movement, that we should not worry about false prophets because God will not allow His people to be deceived. But if you believe you can’t be deceived, then you are ignoring numerous warnings in Scripture about the need to guard against false prophets and false teachers (Matthew 7:15Acts 20:29-302 Peter 2:1).
  • You are overly impressed by the miraculous. Many people are so dazzled by miracles they automatically assume the miracle-worker must have been sent from God. If this describes you, then you are in danger of falling victim to false prophets who, according to Scripture, will perform “great signs and wonders” (Matthew 24:24Revelation 13:11-15).
  • You don’t know sound principles of biblical interpretation. You may read the Bible and think you know it well. But you have not done the hard work of learning how to read it correctly using the historical-grammatical approach. This means that you rip verses out of context or spiritualize them when they are meant to be taken at face value. Anyone who reads the Bible in these ways is susceptible to being lead astray by false prophets (2 Peter 3:15-17).
  • You think you are extra-special to God and deserve to have your desires fulfilled. False prophets will tell people whatever they want to hear–including promising them the fulfillment of  their desires for worldly pleasures, such as money and sex (2 Timothy 4:3-42 Peter 2:18Jude 1:4). You are a sitting duck for false prophets if you are driven by pride and a pursuit of pleasure rather than truth.
  • You put too much trust in people. You think if someone is a church leader and likeable, then he or she must be a godly person. But you are not heeding the warnings in Scripture about false prophets and false teachers who disguise themselves as true believers (Matthew 7:15Jude 1:12-13).
  • You do not value doctrine. You think doctrine is dry and knowledge of doctrine is not essential to having a vibrant faith. You may even believe that doctrine kills faith. If so, you might be among those people who mockingly refer to churches that emphasize doctrine as “dead” and to seminaries that teach doctrine as “cemeteries.” But the apostle John is clear that doctrine should be used as a litmus test for evaluating prophets (1 John 4:1-3).

Can you think of other statements that should be added to my list?

February 3, 2018 Afternoon Verse Of The Day

2:6 This ancient prophecy from Mic 5:2 was written in the eighth century b.c. The original prophecy, not quoted in full by Matthew, declared the deity of Israel’s Messiah: “From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity.” A ruler who will shepherd My people Israel. This portion of Matthew’s quote actually seems to be a reference to God’s words to David when Israel’s kingdom was originally established (2Sa 5:2; 1Ch 11:2). The Gr. word for “ruler” evokes the image of strong, even stern, leadership. “Shepherd” emphasizes tender care. Christ’s rule involves both (cf. Rev 12:5).[1]

2:6no means least Matthew’s reading of Mic 5:2 reflects neither the original Hebrew nor the Septuagint (Greek) translation. However, it is likely that multiple Greek translations were available at this time. Additionally, Matthew may have made his own translation, quoting from memory or paraphrasing. Despite the variations in the text, the sense is the same: Bethlehem’s importance comes from its connection to David and the Davidic Messiah.

will shepherd Ancient Near Eastern rulers often are portrayed as shepherds. The same imagery is used throughout the ot (see Ezek 34:23 and note; Jer 23:1–4; note on John 10:1–42).[2]

2:6 The second line of the quotation in Matthew appears to say the opposite of the second line of Mic. 5:2 (“too little”), but the sense is that though Bethlehem appears to be insignificant, it is in truth important. The religious experts concluded from the prophets that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem, but not one of them bothered to make the short journey with the wise men to see Christ.[3]

Amputating Discernment Ministry from the Body of Christ

Michelle Lesley

“There’s no place for Christian blogs and podcasts. Preaching, teaching, and encouragement should only be done by pastors and teachers in the local church.”

“Open air preaching ministry needs to go the way of the dinosaur.”

“Pro-life ministry organizations just cause too much strife. Lost people are going to reject the gospel because of them.”

“The Bible nowhere mentions Christian legal defense organizations.”

You’ve probably never heard someone give one of these statements as a reason for doing away with podcasts or street preaching or the ACLJ, but these days it seems like everybody – including doctrinally sound, discerning Christians – is screaming, “Off with its head!” about parachurch discernment ministries for these supposed reasons, and others. It’s become the bandwagon du jour. The popular whipping boy for Christian social media. The here-today-gone-tomorrow zeitgeist of online evangelicalism.

Among those who wish to amputate discernment ministry from the Body are…

Friday’s Featured Sermon: “Desiring Heaven Above All Else”

Code: B180202

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” Jim Elliot, the famous missionary, wrote those words in his journal on October 28, 1949. Just six years later they became a profound epitaph of his own life.

In 1952, Elliot abandoned the affluence of western civilization for the remote jungles of Ecuador. By 1956, he had been martyred at the hands of the people he went to evangelize. Elliot probably didn’t expect to die so young (he was only twenty-eight), but he knew the dangers were real. When most of his peers opted for safety and comfort, Jim Elliot chose to take the gospel where it had not yet been preached. Elliot owned an eternal perspective on life that all believers should embrace. As Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:19–20).

Yet for many Christians, there remains a yawning chasm between believing Christ’s words and living up to them. The promises on the pages of Scripture tend to take a back seat to the tangible comforts of Western affluence that we experience every day. And it isn’t easily overcome. To that end, John MacArthur’s sermon “Desiring Heaven Above All Else” is a powerful corrective for our lack of heavenly-mindedness.

But there is a kind of misdirected heavenly-mindedness—one that is not grounded on Scripture. Fanciful accounts by those claiming to have visited heaven captivate the hearts and minds of millions of people. John warns against these heavenly tourism bestsellers that have found their way into Christian bookstores:

We’ve been barraged with these books on people who went to heaven and came back. Let me just clear the air: none of it ever happened. None of them ever went to heaven and came back—none of them. And even if you don’t take my word for it, all you have to do is read all the people who went to heaven and came back, and notice that they all describe it differently. If they all actually went to heaven and came back, they would describe it the same. Their stories are self-cancelling. . . .

If we are to know anything about heaven, it has got to come from the One who is there, and that’s God. He’s the only one. “It is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). You die once; you don’t come back. . . . The only person who has ever come down from heaven is the Lord Jesus Christ. And He has revealed through the Holy Spirit in Scripture what heaven is like. The only place you can turn to understand heaven is the Bible.

We don’t need the empty musings of would-be heavenly tour guides. “Desiring Heaven Above All Else” is a message that explores what God has already revealed on the subject of heaven.

To be sure, Scripture doesn’t unveil the entirety of eternal glory, nor can any of us fully comprehend the truths that are revealed. But God has provided more than enough in His Word to provoke deep heavenly longings among His people.

Don’t be deceived by the pop culture perceptions of clouds, harps, and floating spirits. Heaven is a real, tangible, and endless experience. In his sermon, John MacArthur considers what it will be like to inhabit heaven, the reality of our resurrection bodies, and the ultimate treasure of being in God’s glorious presence forever.

Heaven is the true and ultimate home all Christians should long for. We should share the same passion as the Old Testament saints who “desire[d] a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them” (Hebrews 11:16). John’s message reminds us that God’s eternal rewards infinitely surpass anything this earth has to offer, and outweigh every temporal hardship that we could possibly experience.

Apostasy is the fruit of false prophets

Possessing the Treasure

by Mike Ratliff

5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, 6 from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.
8 But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, 9 knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust. 1 Timothy…

Reprise: Seeing the Unseen: The Nature of Spiritual Warfare

First posted July 19, 2017

Did the Lord Jesus teach his followers to “bind” the powers of darkness?  Should the emphasis on spiritual warfare be on prayer-infused power encounters? What exactly does the Bible teach on the nature of spiritual warfare? Well, according to Christian apologist Greg Koukl of Stand to Reason (STR), the Bible has a lot to say about how we are to defend ourselves against other worldly forces in the unseen realm. We must be armed to the teeth!

What does a Christian’s armor look like? “The very first step in arming ourselves for battle against the devil is to gird our loins with truth (Eph. 6:14).” In this piece from STR’s Solid Ground magazine, Koukl tells us what the Bible teaches about the armor of God. Some who read this will be surprised by his teaching for the reason that the way in which charismatics go about dealing with the demonic is highly unbiblical, only they don’t know it. To make matters worse, attempting to “bind Satan” is a ridiculous and foolish practice.  Taking on powerful, lying, deceptive demons is dangerous!

So with this background in mind, we urge you to open up your Bible and follow along as Greg Koukl explains what it means to “gird your loins with truth.” He writes:

Sometimes, if you know what to look for, you can “see” something that is invisible; you can see the unseen. It’s not a parlor trick, but a valuable spiritual skill. And it’s not that difficult if you know what clues to look for. I’d like to show you what those clues are.

First, though, a foundational matter. I am convinced that most Christians do not understand spiritual warfare. Either they are unaware of the unseen battle or, if they do recognize its importance, they do not focus on the central issue but instead are distracted by a secondary concern. In military terms, they have been taken in by a feint. Here is the feint.

Some Christians think of spiritual battle in terms of power encounters with the devil (or demons) where prayer of a certain sort is the principal weapon employed to defeat, or at least to neutralize (“bind”), the powers of darkness. Curiously, Jesus never taught this approach. He never told us to pray to devils. Instead, He taught us to ask the Father to “deliver us from the evil one” (Matt. 6:13).[1]

I certainly do not mean to minimize the importance of prayer in any area of our Christian lives, especially this one, but to invite you to see something you might not have noticed. When it comes to spiritual warfare, the New Testament emphasis is not on prayer-infused power encounters, but on something completely different, and if we miss that, then I think we miss the heart of it.

The Invisible Battlefield

We live in a world made by an invisible Being and this world is thick with invisible things. They are all “around us,” in a sense, but not immediately obvious to many since the visible realm is so much more imposing.

In 2 Kings 6:15-17, the prophet Elisha’s attendant saw something in the visible realm that overwhelmed him—the Syrian army encircling their city with horses and chariots. “Alas, my master!” he said. “What shall we do?”

Elisha, though, was not shaken. He saw a deeper reality in the unseen realm.

“Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them. Elisha then prayed and said, “O Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” And the Lord opened the servant’s eyes and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”

Elisha saw something his servant did not see: the enemies of God surrounding the city were themselves surrounded by a massive invisible force arrayed behind the scenes for Elisha’s protection. The prophet was able to see the unseen.

Of course, there was no non-miraculous way for Elisha’s servant to see into that realm. He needed help. In our case, though, there are passages in the New Testament that tip us off, giving us clues to help us detect details of a world Elijah had access to. There is an invisible army arrayed against us, too, and sometimes—if we are alert—we can track its maneuvers.

I want you to consider a familiar passage that contains an insight you may not have thought about before. Here is that passage:

Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. (Eph. 6:11-13)

In this text, Paul tells us we are at war. He acknowledges the reality of opposition in the visible world (“flesh and blood”), but instructs us that the more fundamental conflict is at a deeper level in the invisible realm (“the heavenly places”). This you already know.

Here is what you may not have seen before. Paul also tips us off that the enemy operates according to specific strategies he calls “schemes”—battle plans, of sorts, that inform the devil’s tactical maneuvers. Being clothed with the proper armor allows us to “stand firm” against his schemes, resisting the devil’s subterfuge.

Can we know anything about those schemes? I think we can.

Weapon One

I want you to consider a quartet of verses that add up to a sobering truth alerting us to the principal way Satan advances his army in the spiritual battle.

We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” (1 Jn. 5:19)

And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world. (Rev. 12:9)

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ.” (2 Cor. 4:3-4)

The Lord’s bondservant must not be quarrelsome, but…patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will. (2 Tim. 2:24-26)

It may not have occurred to you how complete the enemy’s penetration into the minds of men has been, but these passages make it unmistakable. According to the New Testament the entire world is in the devil’s deathly grip. He holds people captive to do his bidding by trickery and deceit, blinding the minds of those who are perishing, keeping them from coming to their senses and seeing the world the way it really is.

Jesus warned that the devil “is a liar and the father of lies” (Jn. 8:44), employing ruses even Christians are vulnerable to. When we come to Christ we have a new spirit, true enough, but our minds are still filled with Satan’s foolishness, the lies we readily believed that “deceived” and “enslaved” us (Titus 3:3), as we walked “according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air” (Eph. 2:2).

A key element of our own rescue, then, is reversing the process. We are to “lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit,” and “be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self which…has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor…” (Eph. 4:22-25). Do you see the emphasis?

Not surprisingly, then, the very first step in arming ourselves for battle against the devil is to gird our loins with truth (Eph. 6:14). And when we engage the battle with God’s “weapons of warfare [that] are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses,” we attack those lies and lay waste to them, “destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God…” (2 Cor. 10:3-5).

Note: nothing about binding and loosing here. No spiritual wrestling match hinted at in these verses. Rather, the bulk of the biblical testimony takes us in an entirely different direction. As I have written elsewhere:

[The devil] gains ground by craftiness and secrecy, and he destroys by lies, accusation, enticement, and subterfuge. If you doubt him, beware. Stealth is his weapon. Satan happily stays in the shadows where he can do his dark business undetected.[2]

The principal weapon at the enemy’s disposal allowing him to gain ground in the spiritual conflict, then, is not power but deception. Thus, if the basic strategy for Satan’s spiritual assault is spreading lies, then the most potent weapon we can wield in the battle against him is its opposite: spreading truth. The counter to lies—the answer to deception, the antidote to deceit—is truth. I conclude, then, that spiritual warfare is much more about truth encounters than it is about power encounters.[3]

The Gospel Coalition Says Church Should Be ‘Safe Space’ for Homosexuals

(Pulpit & Pen News) The leftist [Social] Gospel Coalition wants your church to know how it can be a “safe space” for homosexuals. Written by Rachel Gilson, the “director of theological development” at Campus Crusades for Christ (CRU) Northeast, the post wags its literary finger at readers within the local church, shaming them for not being a safe enough of a place for people to live in their sin.

Gilson is a lesbian who wrote about her experiences at Christianity Today in a post entitled, “I Never Became Straight. Perhaps That Was Never God’s Goal.” In that article, she made the astonishing claim, “Slowly, I came to understand that ‘making me straight’ wasn’t the answer. There is no biblical command to be heterosexual.” Of course, being fruitful and multiplying – a central command from God to humanity – is a pretty clear requirement of heterosexuality. Homosexuals are clearly incapable of this reproductive fruitfulness.

Gilson, like so many others in recent years, have promoted the idea of a celebrated “eunuch class” of Christians (those with “Same Sex Attaction” who remain celibate). Although Gilson married (reluctantly) and is still physically attracted to females and not her husband, she insists that just accepting her homosexuality is what the church must do, so long as she does not act upon it.

Evangelicals are quickly abandoning the notion of a sanctifying Spirit who conforms us to the image of Christ and changes us from our most inward parts, replacing our sinful nature with a new one. Denying the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, those promoting eunuch Christianity are contradicting the very thing Jesus taught us in the Sermon on the Mount; a sin of the heart is still a sin, whether or not it’s acted upon.

What these leftist Christians at The Gospel Coalition want us to believe is that the desire for homosexuality, in and of itself, is not a sin. The church, therefore, should embrace your “orientation” and celebrate you for not practicing the sin you desire. While we should certainly walk with and encourage one who struggles with sin and resists its further cultivation, we cannot go so far as to deny that Same Sex Attaction (SSA) even if not acted upon is itself a sin for which one should repent.

Gilson, however, writes at TGC…

Lily was crushed. She’d told just a member of her church her secret, and the member warned her that if anyone else found out, she would probably lose her position teaching the youth. What was this secret so deadly that she would be warned to hide it?

Lily is same-sex attracted.

Neither the struggle nor the terror is uncommon. How, then, do we create an environment in our churches, small groups, and families where we can even have this conversation, where Lily can share her struggle without fear?

First, we would hope and pray that the church is a “safe space” for every sinner who desires to repent. That does not mean, however, that someone who is struggling with the lust toward children should work in the nursery. And if anyone says it’s apples and oranges, I’d dare them to explain why then someone struggling with same-sex attraction should be teaching impressionable youth of the same sex. It’s apples and apples.

In the meantime, the term, “safe space,” was created by the LGBTQXYZLMNOP cabal within educational institutions to “protect” LGBTQXYZLMNOP individuals from being exposed to ideas or speech that make them uncomfortable. Repentance is uncomfortable. Confessing any sin – no matter what it is – is uncomfortable. Church is not the place to go to feel comfortable. It is the place to go to hear about a wonderful Savior who died for sins like Same Sex Attraction.

FEBRUARY 3 GOD REVEALS HIMSELF

I saw also the Lord…Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone.

Isaiah 6:1, 5

I often wonder how so many people can live with a continuing hope that they will in some way be able to commune with God through their intellectual capacities. When will they realize that if they could possibly “discover” God they realize that with the intellect, they would be equal to God?

Isaiah is a dramatic example of God’s revelation of Himself to mankind. Isaiah could have tried for a million years to reach God by means of his intellect. But brainpower is not the means by which we find God!

Brethren, it is true that all of us would still be far from God if He had not graciously and in love revealed Himself to us. In the space of a short second of time, the Lord who loves us can reveal Himself to the willing spirit of a man or woman. It is only then that an Isaiah, or any one of us, can say with humble assurance, “I know Him!”

A committed Christian, then, should have upon him an element that is beyond psychology—beyond all natural laws and into spiritual laws!

Lord, thank You for what we can know about You through the various encounters we read in the Bible. Lord, I want to be prepared in my heart to hear Your voice when You speak.[1]

February 3 Qualities of Fishermen/Evangelists

He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”—Matt. 4:19

Our Lord did not merely command His new disciples to become “fishers of men,” He promised to help them catch people’s souls. He would remind them many times that they would never be effective disciplers—or successful disciples at all—if they didn’t rely on His power: “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

Certain qualities that make a person a good fisherman also can make Christians good evangelists. Consider the following four fisherman traits and how they can apply to evangelism.

First, a fisherman knows he often must be patient to locate a school of catchable fish. Second, a good fisherman must have perseverance in going from place to place, sometimes repeatedly, until he finds the fish. Third, effective fishermen have good instincts about being in the right place at the right time for dropping their line or net. Poor timing has lost many catches, both of fish and people. Finally, a good fisherman stays out of sight as much as possible. Similarly, the effective evangelist does not get in the way of his or her witnessing, so as not to be a hindrance to sinners coming to Christ.

Following Christ’s example and realizing the qualities of good evangelists, our churches must not only call us to evangelism but continually encourage us in that calling (cf. Matt. 28:18–19).

ASK YOURSELF

How much “fishing” have you been doing lately? This is not a job for the trained and educated but for all who have been called by God into His service. You won’t always come away with a catch, but you can know you were faithful to drop your line into the water.[1]

February 3 Responding to God’s Glory

We all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the sameimage from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 3:18

As we glorify God, we begin to grow. Because of the great truths revealed in the New Testament, believers can now view God’s glory more clearly than those under the law could. As we do, we grow spiritually, moving from one level of glory to the next.

At the end of today’s verse, notice that Paul says the Holy Spirit is the one who energizes our growth. The Holy Spirit infuses our lives with His power, taking us through levels of glory toward the image of Christ.

Don’t become preoccupied with the intricacies of the Holy Spirit’s work or with the details of your own activity. Make sure you focus primarily on the glory of the Lord.[1]

February 3, 2018 Morning Verse Of The Day

Varieties of Gifts

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. (12:4)

Charisma (plural, gifts) means essentially “gift of grace” or “free gift,” and in sixteen of its seventeen New Testament uses is connected to God as the Giver. In Romans, Paul uses it in reference to the gift of salvation (5:15–16; 6:23), the blessings of God (1:1; 11:29), and divine enablements for ministry (12:6). Every other use of the word by Paul, and the one by Peter (1 Pet. 4:10), relates it to the divine enablements for believers to minister in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Spiritual gifts are not talents. Natural talents, skills, and abilities are granted by God just as everything good and worthwhile is a gift from Him. But those things are natural abilities shared by believer and unbeliever alike. An unbeliever can be a highly skilled artist or musician. An atheist or agnostic can be a great scientist, carpenter, athlete, or cook. If a Christian excels in any such abilities it has nothing to do with his salvation. Though he may use his natural talents quite differently after he is saved, he possessed them before he became a Christian. Spiritual gifts come only as a result of salvation.

Spiritual gifts, however, are not natural, but rather are supernaturally given by the Holy Spirit only and always to believers in Jesus Christ, without exception (v. 7). Spiritual gifts are special capacities bestowed on believers to equip them to minister supernaturally to others, especially to each other. Consequently, if those gifts are not being used, or not being used rightly, the body of Christ cannot be the corporate manifestation of its Head, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the work of God is hindered.

Essential to unity is diversity. Unity of spirit and purpose can be maintained only through diversity of ministry. But unity is not uniformity. A football team whose players all wanted to play quarterback would have uniformity but not unity. It could not function as a team if everyone played the same position. That is Paul’s point here. God gives His people varieties of gifts just as players on a team have varieties of positions.

Varieties (diaireseis) basically means “apportionments,” “allotments,” or “distributions,” with the derived idea of varieties. God distributes His gifts in many forms, in many varieties, to His children. He has a multiplicity of gifts, which are given to every believer. They fall into two general types, speaking gifts and serving gifts (see 1 Pet. 4:11).

The New Testament contains several lists of the categories of spiritual gifts, one of which is here in 1 Corinthians 12:8–10, 28 (see also Rom. 12:6–8; cf. 1 Pet. 4:11). Bible scholars do not agree on the exact number and distinction of kinds of gifts. Because the scriptural lists are not identical, it seems clear that God did not intend to give His church either a rigid or a precise and exhaustive compilation, but rather general categories. One should be careful not to over define the gifts. Because they may resist over-classification, there is not much value in taking tests, formal or informal, to determine what spiritual gifts we have. A believer’s gifts can be an overlapping combination, taken in different proportions from the categories of gifts. One person may be obviously strong in a single gift, such as teaching. Another may not be strong in any one gift but have some measure of three or four categories. It is best to see each person’s gift as a unique blend of the categories of giftedness, granted to that individual in connection with his or her traits and experiences and the needs of the church. Each believer becomes as unique spiritually as his fingerprints are physically.[1]

FEBRUARY 3 WE ARE NOT ALONE

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

—Joshua 1:9

We are each like a little child lost in a crowded market, who has strayed but a few feet from his mother, yet because she cannot be seen the child is inconsolable. So we try by every method devised by religion to relieve our fears and heal our hidden sadness; but with all our efforts we remain unhappy still, with the settled despair of men alone in a vast and deserted universe.

But for all our fears we are not alone. Our trouble is that we think of ourselves as being alone. Let us correct the error by thinking of ourselves as standing by the bank of a full flowing river; then let us think of that river as being none else but God Himself. We glance to our left and see the river coming full out of our past; we look to the right and see it flowing on into our future. But we see also that it is flowing through our present. And in our today it is the same as it was in our yesterday, not less than, nor different from, but the very same river, one unbroken continuum, undiminished, active and strong as it moves sovereignly on into our tomorrow. POM006-007

Thank You, Lord, that I can have confidence in Your unchanging Presence. Yesterday, today and tomorrow, I know I am not alone. Amen.[1]
