June 4: Faithful Examples

2 Chronicles 9:1–10:19; Titus 2:1–8; Psalm 95:1–11

We cringe when we see other Christians exploiting the gospel, using it to advance their own personal or political agenda. Today, it doesn’t take much effort to do so—it’s as easy as posting a video or link online. In these situations, it’s tempting to respond with anger or frustration, but if we do so, we’re compounding the problem with our own behavior.

We can learn a lot from an ancient Graeco—Roman context that really isn’t so different from ours. Paul had left Titus in Crete to help the Cretans learn what it looked like to live the gospel. Paul gives Titus instructions for each age and gender group to help the Cretan believers reset their old ways of being and avoid bringing the gospel message into disrepute.

Paul realized, though, that the Cretans needed real-life examples to truly change. He set up mentors within the community. The elderly women were to teach younger women so that “the word of God may not be slandered” (Titus 2:5). Titus, a young man, needed to be a model of good works. His teaching needed to show “soundness, dignity, a sound message beyond reproach” (Titus 2:7–8). His works and his teaching were intended to be a model Christian living.

The Cretan believers had to examine their old habits and behaviors, and we’re no different. All of us come from different contexts that have shaped the way we live out our faith—and sometimes we need correction. Although we’re quick to look down on other Christians when they inhibit the gospel message through their faulty applications, we’re often unaware when we do it ourselves.

When we see others misusing the gospel, we need to wisely and lovingly confront them about their motives. Like Titus and influential Cretan believers, though, we also have to be open to the work of Christ in our own lives. We can do this by aligning our motives with the gospel and graciously and humbly accepting correction when it’s needed. Through living out the gospel, we can reflect Christ so that others are drawn to Him.

How are you being a model for other Christians?

June 4 Being Slow to Speak

“Let every one be … slow to speak” (James 1:19).

✧✧✧

Don’t rush into the role of a Bible teacher.

It is reported that when the Scottish Reformer John Knox was called to preach, he shed many tears and withdrew to the privacy of his room. He was grieved and greatly troubled at the prospect of such an awesome responsibility. Only the compelling grace of the Holy Spirit Himself enabled Knox to fulfill his calling.

John Knox understood the importance of being “slow to speak.” He knew that God holds teachers of the Word accountable for what they say and will dispense a stricter judgment to them if they violate their ministry (James 3:1–2).

In one sense, God holds everyone accountable for what they say. You are to “let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, that it may give grace to those who hear” (Eph. 4:29). But being “slow to speak” doesn’t refer to vocabulary or opinions. It refers to teaching the Word. You are to pursue every opportunity to hear God’s Word but must exercise reluctance in assuming the role of a teacher. Why? Because the tongue reveals the subtle sins of one’s heart and easily offends others (James 3:2).

Does that mean you should never teach the Bible? No, because God commands every believer to “make disciples … teaching them to observe all” that Jesus taught (Matt. 28:19–20, emphasis added). And the Spirit gifts many believers to be preachers and teachers of the Word. Paul said, “I am under compulsion; for woe is me if I do not preach the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:16).

You must take every opportunity to share the gospel with others; and if God has called and gifted you to teach the Word, be faithful to do so. But remember, those are serious and sacred responsibilities. Be sure your motives are pure and your teaching accurate. If someone is offended, let it be by the convicting power of the Word, not by something you said at an unguarded moment.

✧✧✧

Suggestions for Prayer:  Ask the Lord to teach you to guard your tongue and to speak only what is edifying to others.

For Further Study: Read Proverbs 10:19, 13:3, 17:28, and 29:20, noting what each verse teaches about wise speech.[1]

Israeli Embassy Claps Back At Iranian Leader’s Call To Wipe Them Out With This Hilarious GIF — The Federalist

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei recently said Israel is a “cancerous tumor” that needs to be “eradicated,” but Israel is not having any of it.

An account that translates Ayatollah Khamenei’s remarks into English tweeted Sunday a series of critiques about how Israel was handling the protestors along the Israeli-Gaza border.

“Our stance against Israel is the same stance we have always taken,” one tweet read. “#Israel is a malignant cancerous tumor in the West Asian region that has to be removed or eradicated: it is possible and it will happen. 7/31/91#GreatReturnMarch”

The Israeli embassy clapped back a hilarious response — a “Mean Girls” gif.

Palestinian protesters plan to storm the Israeli-Gaza border once again leading up to June 5, which marks the anniversary of Israel’s victory in the Six Day War. The victory enabled Israel to gain control of the West Bank, Golan Heights, and east Jerusalem. Tensions along the border escalated over the weekend after a 21-year-old nurse was shot while attempting to help those who were wounded along the border. Israeli troops carried out airstrikes on Saturday, which hit Hamas targets in response to mortars fired into Israel.

JUNE 4 SPECTATOR CHRISTIANS

By love serve one another.

Galatians 5:13

This we have heard: “I am a born-again Christian and I am happy that my sins are forgiven and I go to church on Sunday because I like the fellowship!”

We ask: “Do you not go to put yourself in the way of spiritual blessing?”

The answer: “No, I am saved and I do not need anything!”

We ask: “Have you offered to witness, to pray, to encourage, to assist, to participate in your church’s life and outreach?”

The answer: “No. My church seems to get along very well without my help!”

Brethren, this “nonparticipation” kind of faith is a strange parody on Bible Christianity. Men and women who say they are believers just cancel themselves out. Is it something we have learned from the sporting events?—the great majority are spectators. They come and sit!

If there is any true spiritual life within us, God will give us a gift of some kind and the humble soul will find something to do for God!

Lord, I pray for my local church today, that many “fringe” attendees will desire to participate in our church’s life and ministry.[1]

4 signs you’re being manipulated — and how to stop it

Jack Frog/Shutterstock

  • Manipulation is a deceptive tactic that people employ to accomplish their own ends.
  • Signs of psychological manipulation include lying or other forms of deception, appealing to fear, and establishing a power imbalance.
  • It’s important to recognize the signs of manipulation and use appropriate measures to combat it. Here’s how.

Psychological manipulation is any action that’s designed to help someone accomplish their own agenda through deceptive or otherwise shady tactics. It usually involves creating a power imbalance within the relationship or interaction — and isn’t all that uncommon.

“Most of us have to deal with it on a regular basis, from untrustworthy relationships to commercial advertising and political rhetoric,” said Preston Ni, communication coach, professor of communication studies at Foothill College, and author of “How to Successfully Handle Manipulative People.”

The pervasiveness of manipulation can make it difficult to distinguish from persuasion. But there is a key difference, Ni said. “Healthy social influence occurs between most people, and is part of the give-and-take of constructive relationships. In psychological manipulation, one person is used for the benefit of another.”

To help you figure out if you’re being manipulated, here are four signs it’s happening to you (and ways to stop it):

1. Their case is overstated

Flickr/Official GDC

Exaggeration is a common trick used by manipulators, Ni explained in a post in Psychology Today. If you aren’t comfortable with a direct approach, you can counteract this attempt at manipulation by focusing on the facts, as well as asking for more information and sources, he wrote.

2. The primary focus is on fear

Gleb Leonov/Strelka Institut/Attribution License/Flickr

Some manipulators resort to scare tactics to get others to go along with their plan, Ni told Business Insider. This could involve anything from saying things that play into a fear of rejection or monetary losses to threats of bodily harm or backlash if the other person goes against their wishes.

This can create a heightened sense of danger, so it may make sense to use less direct methods to de-escalate the situation, like finding a way to end the conversation or, if possible, moving to a more public location.

3. The power imbalance is a big part of the discussion

Photographee.eu/Shutterstock

Though this is less subtle than other manipulation tactics, Ni said it’s not uncommon for a manipulator to attempt to establish control over the situation by constantly reminding others of their own importance and power.

This helps them seem more dominant while putting the other person at a disadvantage. It can help to respond by asserting your own importance, thereby leveling the playing field.

AYATOLLAH KHAMENEI Threatens to “Eradicate” Israel, Orders Atomic Agency to Ramp Up Uranium Levels “Without Any Delay” — The Gateway Pundit

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei threatened to eradicate Israel from the world in a Sunday tweet.

Our stance against Israel is the same stance we have always taken. is a malignant cancerous tumor in the West Asian region that has to be removed and eradicated: it is possible and it will happen. 7/31/91

Then on Monday evening Supreme Leader order the country’s Atomic Energy Organization to ramp up production of uranium levels “without any delay.”

Khamenei.ir@khamenei_ir

Iranian nation & government will not stand being under both sanctions & nuclear restrictions. The Atomic Energy Organization of must immediately make the preparations for achieving 190K SWU– for now within — starting tomorrow.

Iran Press News reported:

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has ordered the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) to make preparations for enrichment of uranium up to a level of 190,000SWU without any delay.

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in a ceremony held at the Imam Khomeini Mausoleum in south Tehran to commemorate the 29th anniversary of the passing away of the founder of the Islamic Republic while talking about Iran’s nuclear deal with the P5+1 group of countries, which is officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“It seems from what they say that some European governments expect the Iranian nation to both put up with sanctions and give up its nuclear activities and continue to observe limitations [on its nuclear program]. I tell those governments that this bad dream will never come true,” the Leader said.

Stressing that the Iranian nation and government cannot tolerate to be both sanctioned and be put in the “nuclear custody,” Ayatollah Khamenei ordered the AEOI to take rapid steps to make preparations for starting uranium enrichment “up to a level of 190,000SWU for the time being within the framework of the JCPOA” and take other preliminary steps that the president has ordered from tomorrow.

US President Donald Trump announced on May 8 that Washington was walking away from the nuclear agreement, which was reached between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the US, Britain, France, Russia and China – plus Germany.

Trump also said he would reinstate US nuclear sanctions on Iran and impose “the highest level” of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.

New World Order: Empire of the Internet, One World Marketplace

We are witnessing the formation of a global empire. Like previous empires, this one, too, enforces peace within its borders. And since its borders cover the entire globe, the World Empire effectively enforces world peace. This sounds scary if you think the global empire is a government. But the true global empire is the interconnectedness which makes violence unprofitable. The more connected the world becomes economically, the more we all share the same interests.

air and blanketed villages with lava. Officials said 25 people have been killed and 300 are injured after the volcano, which lies around 27 miles from Guatemala City, erupted just before midday local time on Sunday and lava attacked villages and roads by 4 pm. A total of 1.7million people have also been forced to flee as residents were urged to prepare for the raging volcano to blow again in a terrifying warning.  READ MORE

Trump’s White House Isn’t Acknowledging June As LGBT Pride Month

Posted: 04 Jun 2018 05:23 AM PDT

Trump’s White House Isn’t Acknowledging June As LGBT Pride MonthAfter years of precedent set by Barack Obama, President Donald Trump is breaking from tradition by failing to recognize June as LGBT Pride Month.  On the final day of May, the president issued five separate proclamations, choosing June to honor Caribbean-American heritage, African-American music, homeownership, the outdoors and the ocean. (Reporters and comedians alike noted the irony

of the last two, in light of Trump pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Agreement last week.) An acknowledgement of June as a historic month for LGBT people was nowhere to be found. LGBT advocates and former White House staffers took to Twitter to criticize the lack of recognition. Shin Inouye, a former member of Obama’s communication staff, said Trump “couldn’t be bothered” to recognize LGBT Pride Month and expressed that, given his record, “maybe it’s for the best.” READ MORE

Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake strikes Kilauea summit, Sending ash plumes up to 8,000 feet

Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake strikes Kilauea summit, Sending ash plumes up to 8,000 feetA magnitude 5.5 earthquake shook the Kilauea summit, resulting in an ash plume that reached up to 8,000 feet, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.  The earthquake happened at 3:51 p.m. local Sunday, according to the US Geological Survey. It did not cause a tsunami threat, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

But the Hawaii Civil Defense Agency said the fallout will affect the volcano and Pahala areas, and cautioned about the possibility of aftershocks. There were 500 quakes in the summit area of Kilauea in a 24-hour period over the weekend — the highest rate ever measured at the summit area, according to Brian Shiro, supervisory geophysicist at the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The Department Of Homeland Security Plans To Compile A List Of All Bloggers, Journalists And “Social Media Influencers”

The Department Of Homeland Security Plans To Compile A List Of All Bloggers, Journalists And “Social Media Influencers”(By Michael Snyder) Many were hoping that once Barack Obama was out of office we would see less of this Big Brother surveillance nonsense, but instead it seems to be getting even worse.  In fact, the Department of Homeland Security has just announced that it intends to compile a comprehensive list of hundreds of thousands of “journalists, editors, correspondents, social media influencers, bloggers etc.”, and collect any “information that could be relevant” about them.  So if you have a website, an important blog or you are just very active on social media, the Department of Homeland Security is going to put you on a list and will start collecting information about you.

The DHS has already announced that it will hire a contractor to aid in monitoring media coverage, and they will definitely need plenty of help because it is going to be a very big job… . As part of its “media monitoring,” the DHS seeks to track more than 290,000 global news sources as well as social media in over 100 languages, including Arabic, Chinese and Russian, for instant translation into English. The successful contracting company will have “24/7 access to a password protected, media influencer database, including journalists, editors, correspondents, social media influencers, bloggers etc.” in order to “identify any and all media coverage related to the Department of Homeland Security or a particular event.” READ MORE

What’s With All the False Alarm Warnings from the Emergency Alert System Lately?

What’s With All the False Alarm Warnings from the Emergency Alert System Lately? In 2018, there have been at least 4 false alarms that have drummed up panic for no reason at all. It makes you wonder, what’s with all these false alarms? And how can we actually trust an alert that comes to our phone from the Emergency Alert System at all?

Hawaii – The first, of course, was Hawaii, on January 13th. That one scared me personally since one of my dearest friends lives there and I knew it was a time when she wouldn’t be up yet in the morning. I frantically tried to reach her and finally woke her up to tell her the news. A missile was on the way to Hawaii and it was NOT a drill.  The message was sent to cell phones and broadcast on TV and radio stations with the chilling message that residents were to take shelter immediately. Warning sirens went off at resorts and hotels.  It was bedlam in many parts of the island state. Parents were shoving their children into storm drains. After 47 minutes of terror, another alert told the panicked islanders that this had been a false alarm. CONTINUE

Bright fireball explodes over Jinghong City, China

Bright fireball explodes over Jinghong City, ChinaA very bright fireball exploded over the Chinese city of Jinghong in Yunnan Province at 13:40 UTC on June 1, 2018. Locals reported sonic booms associated with the event.  According to witness reports, the event lasted for about 2 seconds and was followed by two sonic booms. This indicates the object penetrated deep into the atmosphere and that some of its pieces might have survived the entry. The

director of the Xishuangbanna State Seismological Bureau, Ma Zhengyin, said the object entered at an angle of 70 degrees, common for meteors. However, both Zhengyin and Wang Xiaobin, a researcher at the Yunnan Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences, said they can’t be sure it was a meteor because the video was short and there was no obvious path. According to local media reports, people living in Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province are looking for possible meteorites on the ground. READ MORE

California fears “Big One” after quake strikes near Anaheim

California fears “Big One” after quake strikes near AnaheimLocals took to social media to report feeling a “sharp jolt” from the quake, with many of them in the La Habra area of Orange County. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake, which had a depth of 4.8 miles, hit at 8:21 am local time (4:21pm UK time). Twitter user Michael Kim wrote: “Another earthquake just hit Southern California. It was a sharp jolt.” The news comes amid

heightened fears of California being rocked by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake or greater, known as the ‘Big One’.  California is located on the Ring of Fire, a huge area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions frequently occur. Robert Graves, a research geophysicist at the USGS, warned late last year that the Big One could be overdue by 10 years. READ MORE

Top Psychiatrist says “Demonic Possession” is REAL

Top Psychiatrist says “Demonic Possession” is REALIt is a phenomenon that is on the rise throughout the world: The number of cases of demonic possession – and demands for priests to carry out exorcisms – is, according to multiple sources, soaring.  Medical science remains sceptical. However, a Princeton-and-Yale-educated mainstream psychiatrist believes demonic possession is indeed very real – and claims that the majority of Americans agree with him. With 25 years experience in a private psychiatric practice and as a

professor at New York Medical College and Columbia University, Dr Richard Gallagher has a rare vantage point to observe human behavior. And then there is the inhuman. He is also a sought-after psychiatrist for discernment, the initial step in determining the need for exorcism. Dr Gallagher has evaluated hundreds of cases of possible possession and, in a wide-ranging and rare interview with the Telegraph, explains why he believes the phenomenon is genuine.  READ MORE

Violent eruption at Guatemala’s Fuego volcano leaves 6 killed and 20 injuredAt least six people were killed and another 20 injured on Sunday when Guatemala’s Fuego volcano erupted violently, spewing a stream of red-hot lava and belching a thick plume of black smoke and ash that rained onto the capital and other regions.  “It’s a river of lava that overflowed its banks and affected the Rodeo village. There are injured, burned and dead people,” Sergio Cabanas, the general

secretary of Guatemala’s Conred disaster agency, said on radio. “We are evacuating and rescuing people and have reports of 20 wounded, six dead and disappeared,” said Cabanas. An ash covered woman said lava poured through corn fields and she feared more had died. “Not everyone escaped, I think they were buried,” Consuelo Hernandez told local news outlet Diario de Centroamerica in a video.  READ MORE

Sharing your faith with a Muslim in Algeria will result in jail time

Sharing your faith with a Muslim in Algeria will result in jail timeChristians have increasingly become the targets for an authoritarian crackdown by the government of Algeria. A Presidential election is on the horizon and Islamic groups within the country, primarily opposed to the current regime, are gaining ground.  In what is seen as a measure to gain popular support, the government is now beginning vigorously to enforce anti-Christian laws that were passed in 2006.

Situated in Northern Africa and now the frequent target of Islamic extremists, Algeria is Africa’s largest country by land area and is home to just over 40 million people, 99% of whom are Muslim. By employing a tactic seen in Iran, Algeria requires that all churches register with the government, pay licensing fees and submit to stringent monitoring and inspections. So-called “house-churches” are considered illegal, as are all churches that do not meet the government’s requirement for control. READ MORE

Why We Still Desperately Need the Old Testament

Posted: 03 Jun 2018 11:44 AM PDT

Why We Still Desperately Need the Old Testament(By Rabbi Eric Tokajer) Recently, the internet has been filled with the discussion of the place and value of the Old Testament for believers in Messiah Yeshua (Jesus). Who it was that started the discussion is not nearly as important as the fact that the discussion is taking place. Honestly, I have to say I am thrilled to see so many of my friends in the Christian World having this discussion. It is a discussion that has been going on among my Messianic Jewish friends ever since I became a believer in Yeshua as Messiah. As I said above I am thrill that this conversation is taking place and I hope the dialogue continues as more

and more believers take the time to open their Bibles and reinvestigate the Old Testament and its implications upon the modern New Testament believer. While as an outside to this conversation I have enjoyed the position of being the proverbial fly on the wall, reading, listening and watching as well-known and well-studied Christian leaders allow iron to sharpen iron. I wanted to throw a thought out for those discussing to consider as you work through the sacred texts to find the place where you stand concerning the Old Testament. READ MORE

More Hawaii residents leave homes as new lava threatens Big Island

More Hawaii residents leave homes as new lava threatens Big IslandNational Guard troops, police and firefighters ushered the last group of evacuees from homes on the eastern tip of Hawaii’s Big Island early on Saturday, hours before lava from the Kilauea volcano cut off road access to the area, officials said.  A stream of lava as wide as three football fields flowed over a highway near a junction at Kapoho, a seaside community of rebuilt after a destructive eruption of Kilauea in 1960.  The lava flow left Kapoho and the adjacent development of Vacationland cut off from

the rest of the island by road, according to the Hawaii County Civil Defense agency. Also, lava destroyed a freshwater lake, boiling away all of the water in it, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported late Saturday, local time. “Lava entered Green Lake within Kapoho Crater, producing a large steam plume … A Hawaiian County Fire Department overflight reported that the lava filled the lake and apparently evaporated all the water,” the report said.
