August 24: Who Is Trustworthy?

Isaiah 48:1–49:26; Luke 19:11–48; Job 11:1–12

We might get sidetracked when reading the Parable of the Ten Minas. Businessmen aren’t sympathetic characters in our modern world. In movies and sometimes in life, they’re often flat, miserly characters who take advantage of naïve individuals and community values.

Although there is often an element of truth to some stereotypes, it can be too easy to take sides. And we’re forced to take sides in this parable. Whose view is correct—the people of the city who hate the nobleman, the fearful servant, or the nobleman and his faithful servants?

The response of the masses seems unjustified. The two servants entrusted with minas are faithful characters, but not the focus of the parable. When the final servant is summoned, we expect an interesting turn of events. Will we sympathize with him? We’ve already heard that the citizens hate the nobleman, and the final servant seems to confirm this: “For I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man—you withdraw what you did not deposit, and you reap what you did not sow!” (Luke 19:21).

But it’s not the final servant who provides the climactic turn of events that we’re looking for—it’s the nobleman. Instead of punishing the servant for disobeying His commands, the nobleman holds the servant accountable to his own perceived value system: “By your own words I will judge you, wicked slave! You knew that I am a severe man, withdrawing what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow. And why did you not give my money to the bank, and I, when I returned, would have collected it with interest?” (Luke 19:22–23). Rather than letting him off the hook, the nobleman points out that the servant is inconsistent. He has been making excuses for his unfaithfulness all along.

Because we’re imperfect characters, we need to be ready and willing to take an honest look at the lenses with which we view the world: our hearts. If we’re ready to live faithfully, we need to look to the only trustworthy character—the one who sacrificed everything for us.

August 24 Covering Sin

“[Love] bears all things” (1 Cor. 13:7).


Love confronts sin but protects the sinner.

In 1 Corinthians 13:7 Paul mentions four qualities of love that are closely related: bearing all things, believing all things, hoping all things, and enduring all things. That might sound like love is indiscriminate and accepting of anything that comes along, but “all things” in that verse is qualified by the context. Love rejects jealousy, bragging, arrogance, and so on (vv. 4–6); but it bears, believes, hopes, and endures all things that are within the parameters of God’s Word.

“[Love] bears all things” speaks of love’s willingness to cover sins and protect sinners from further harm. That’s opposite our tabloid-mentality society in which gossip is big business and people seemingly have an insatiable appetite for exposés and “true confessions.”

Love seeks to protect, not expose. It confronts and disciplines sin but never broadcasts failures or wrongs. It feels the pain of those it loves and is willing to take that pain upon itself when necessary—as Christ did when He suffered for our sins.

In the Old Testament, the mercy seat was the place where the blood of atonement was sprinkled to cover the sins of the people (Lev. 16:14). That covering prefigured the perfect covering of sin that Christ brought through His death on the cross (Rom. 3:25–26). All who trust in Him are forever covered with the mantle of God’s love.

You cannot cover sins in the redemptive sense, but you can help protect and restore its victims. Proverbs 10:12 says, “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all transgressions.” First Peter 4:8 says, “Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.”

When you hear of someone’s sin, what is your first reaction? Do you think the worst of him or even gloat over his failures? Or do you expect the best and want to protect him from further exposure, ridicule, or harm? Are you willing to confront sin when necessary and even help bear the burden that person might be carrying? How you react indicates the quality of your love.


Suggestions for Prayer:  Thank God for covering your sins with Christ’s blood. ✧ Commit yourself to loving others in a way that truly bears all things.

In this life, we are experiencing only unfinished segments of God’s great eternal plan. Certainly we are not able to comprehend fully the glory that will be ours in that future day when leaning on the arm of our heavenly Bridegroom we are led into the presence of the Father in heaven with exceeding joy!

The writer to the Hebrews has tried to help us in the proper exercise of our faith, with the amazing statement that our Lord Jesus Christ is the heir of all things in God’s far-flung creation. All things created have been ordered and laid out so they become the garment of deity and the universal living expression of Himself to this world!

What does “heir of all things” really mean? It includes angels, seraphim, cherubim, ransomed men and women of all ages, matter, mind, law, spirit, value, meaning. It includes life and events on varied levels of being—and God’s great interest embraces them all!

Surely God has left nothing to chance in His creative scheme—whether it be the tiniest blade of grass or the mightiest galaxy in the distant heavens above!

Lord of the Harvest, there are still people in this world who have never heard the name of Jesus. Nor, therefore, have they heard that He will be the rightful “heir of all things.” I pray that Your Spirit will hasten the sending of the gospel to the remaining unreached peoples of the world.[1]

Twelve Reasons Why Atheism Cannot Explain Reality

This worldview gets hit and trampled quickly. The weapons of the faithful are powerful in destroying the walls of opposition. The knowledge of God destroys the lofty arguments that rise high and fall hard. Christ captivates. He is ready to punish every disobedience (2 Cor 10:3–6).

1. Purpose — Atheism cannot perceive an ultimate purpose for humankind and the universe. Without God, there is no ultimate purpose. Without God, humanity would eventually cease to exist, the stars would go dark, and the galaxies would drift into nothingness forever. The best explanation for purpose of life is God.

2. Morality — Atheism is limitless in moral boundaries, and thereby, secularists can invent their own morality. Such subjective morality increases moral corruption. Societies and individuals can set their own moral definitions and limits without an objective standard. However, most people live by some sense of fairness that they expect others already to know. Because people can corrupt their moral consciences, humanity needs an objective moral standard as a corrective. However, atheism denies the only plausible objective standard for morality. Secularism can only support subjective morality from either society, instinct, or self. Furthermore, subjective morality is self-centered by definition while objective morality is selfless. Without God, there are no objective moral values. However, objective moral values exist. Therefore, God exists. There are behaviors that are absolutely right or wrong. God is the objective moral standard and His special revelation is the moral corrective for humanity.

3. Motives — Secularism assumes unbiased neutrality and yet excludes other plausible explanations that include recognizing a transcendent Cause and Creator — a personal God. Any person who disregards or reinterprets reality for the purpose to reject God is not honest. Neutrality cannot dismiss a prime Cause and Creator and remain honest. Atheistic worldviews are free from an objective corrective of motives. Therefore, subjective morality alone thrives in secularism and is self-centered by nature. Secularism ignores and atheism denies the only plausible moral corrective who is God. Subjective morality allows people to set their own morals and then invest in potentially meaningless ventures and destructive innovations for the purposes of euthanasia, abortion, and genocide. Humanity’s universal sense of fairness demonstrates a transcendent moral corrective of motives — who is God. The God-given conscience and God’s moral standard motivates humanity toward respecting life, acting with compassion, and saving lives…

Chinese Military Joining Russians for Nuclear War Games

Russia and China will hold a large-scale military exercise next month that will include simulated nuclear weapons attacks, according to American defense officials. The People’s Liberation Army will send more than 3,200 troops, 900 pieces of military equipment, and 30 aircraft to Russia for the exercise known as Vostok-18, or East-18, the Chinese Defense Ministry said, noting the exercises will involve practicing maneuver defense, live firing of weapons, and counterattack.

Around 70 earthquakes are said to have hit the Ring of Fire, which is a horseshoe shaped area of volcanic arcs, volcanic belts and tectonic plates.

Russia says 63,000 troops have seen combat in Syria

Russia has revealed the extent of its military involvement in Syria’s war. A defence ministry video said more than 63,000 Russian military personnel had “received combat experience” in the country since September 2015. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said at the end of last year that 48,000 personnel had been deployed. The video also said Russian air force had flown 39,000 sorties, destroying 121,466 “terrorist targets” and killing more than 86,000 “militants”.

Authorities made the discovery last week and have arrested the southern Arizona building’s owner.

Hawaii has been hit with strong winds and torrential rain as Hurricane Lane approaches the US state, causing flash flooding and landslides. Schools and offices were closed as residents took shelter from the storm, which was downgraded to category three strength on Thursday. As the hurricane neared the islands of the Aloha state, it brought winds of 125 mph (200 km/h) and heavy rainfall.

David Horowitz: Visa, Mastercard Cut Off Payments to My Think Tank Based on SPLC ‘Hate Group’ Label

The David Horowitz Freedom Center has had their donation processing system blocked by Visa and Mastercard allegedly following a campaign by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Visa has since contacted Breitbart News to deny involvement in the blacklisting of the Freedom Center. The David Horowitz Freedom Center stated in a recent email that its ability to accept donations by credit card has been disabled by both Visa and Mastercard following a campaign by the SPLC to label the Freedom Center as a hate group.

Navy takes part in world’s largest maritime exercise

For the very first time, an IDF Navy delegation took part in the Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC), the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise. During the drill, which took place near Hawaii last month, Israeli officers joined the commanding team. The exercise included 25 participants from 26 countries, 47 warships, 200 fighter planes, and five submarines.

Seismic Shocker: The Number Of Global Earthquakes Over The Last 30 Days Is More Than 50% Above Normal

Why is the number of earthquakes happening around the world increasing so dramatically?  In recent days, we have seen very large earthquakes in Venezuela, Fiji, Italy and elsewhere.  Here in North America, significant quakes have rattled Oregon, Alaska and the west coast of Mexico.  As I reported on all of these important seismic events, it sure seemed like the number of earthquakes was rising, but I wanted to be sure.  I once worked as an attorney, and I was trained to only come to conclusions that were warranted by the facts.  So I decided to pull up the numbers, and what I discovered was extremely alarming.  I turns out that the number of earthquakes that we have witnessed over the last 30 days is more than 50 percent above normal.  Of course the Earth is constantly being pummeled by quakes, but this is a huge deviation from the norm.  Could it be possible that we have entered a time when major Earth changes are going to start happening on a regular basis?  If so, what does that mean for the future of our society? Loren Sandford is a pastor in Colorado and apparently he thinks it is time the old guard goes off to that false prophet retirement ranch. What is delicious is he takes their own false prophet network language, weaponizes it and uses it against them. Not saying anything less than godly? You just said they were impure and in need of cleansing! I see though the new generation of false prophets carry a fresh heart for a new day of deceiving the masses. Beloved watch the next sentence carefully — they will speak more from humble intimacy with Jesus and from a pastoral spirit rather than from a concern for gifting. Translation is that the new experiential Christianity from places such as Bethel and IHOP are creating this new wave of younger false prophets and their focus will be on the pretend relationship they have with Jesus where they wait until something pops into their mind and then pretend it was Jesus speaking to their hearts. They contrast this with the old guard who they feel worried too much if you actually had the gift of prophecy! How absurdly hysterical! The old guard is so heretical they opened up schools to teach people how to falsely prophesy! Many of the young guns that now seek to push them out were probably trained at such schools! This new group though? They do not even care if they have the gift of prophecy! As long as the false prophecy flows from the depths of their wickedly deceitful hearts! Forget about that stodgy old gift development! That so old school. I am unsure how they think they can attain oneness with Christ without His word.

Russell Moore will be a plenary speaker at the National Immigration Forum, an organization formed and funded by Democrat financier, George Soros. The purpose of the National Immigration Forum is to advance the cause of amnesty for illegal aliens, demolish national sovereign borders, and establish a global government. In short, the National Immigration Forum would seek to demolish the Nation State, the surest and most trustworthy defense of personal religious liberty. Russell Moore, in partnering with George Soros’ global agenda, is accomplishing precisely the opposite of the mission of the organization he runs, the Southern Baptists’ Ethics and Religious Liberty Foundation. According to Michael O’Fallon, who is one of the most well-connected men in all of the Reformed theological world, he had a front row seat to how this bizarre relationship between open-border zealots and Southern Baptists began. According to the podcast below, O’Fallon explains that there was an intentional decision by the Evangelical Intelligentsia to promote illegal immigration and dismantle sovereign nation-state borders in order to capitalize on what they say is the one segment of American evangelicalism that isn’t shrinking…ethnic minorities. Coveting church growth, men like Russell Moore have made the cold and calloused decision to lock arms with George Soros and follow the path of Roman Catholics, who have seen some success in retaining Hispanic followers by opposing immigration law. Russell Moore has chosen to promote a thoroughly political ideology (the end of national sovereignty) for the sake of church growth. While listening to O’Fallon’s explanation of the evangelical partnership with Soros, I repeatedly acknowledged the validity of Pulpit & Pen’s Seth Dunn, who has time and time again argued that the appeal to immigration lawlessness is financially motivated, looking at demographics and deciding that Caucasians will not be able to keep evangelical institutions (like the SBC) afloat in coming decades.


As the links above demonstrate, the National Immigration Forum is directly funded by George Soros. Its initiative, Bibles, Badges, and Businesses, is an explicit strategy to get evangelical churches (Bibles), law enforcement (badges) and corporations (businesses) to coalesce for the purpose of ending national sovereign borders. Beginning with Richard  Land, then president of the ERLC, and followed up by Russell Moore, Southern Baptists have been a part of this sinister strategy from the beginning. Continuing the strategy of turning evangelicals into a leftist voting block, commandeering the Moral Majority for the sake of the Democratic Party, Russell Moore is again partnering with the National Immigration Forum and will be speaking at an upcoming conference.

Notice that Lifeway Executive Director of Research (Ed Stetzer’s old gig), Scott McConnell, is also speaking.

Shirley Hoogstra, the President of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, is a longtime supporter of illegal immigration and also serves on the Soros-funded Evangelical Immigration Table, a sub-organization of the National Immigration Forum, a sub-organization of Soros’ Open Society Foundations (as the links above demonstrate). Margaret Mims is the Sherriff of Fresno County, California, and made waves for rejecting Trump’s proposal to have federal immigration officers deputize local law enforcement. Mims said that her department would not be asking people for their immigration status. While rejecting the idea of “sanctuary cities,” Mims has also rejected the idea of her department enforcing immigration law.

How do we deal with illegal immigrants once they’re here?

Liberals: Deport them from the streets of America to government-funded housing, with free internet, food, healthcare, and a subsidized account to their favorite MMO.

Conservatives: Shoot on sight.

How should we respond when an illegal commits a crime?

Liberals: If it’s revealed that a criminal might have been here illegally, immediately stop talking about the crime. Don’t report on it, don’t mention it—pretend it never happened. In fact, you could blame the crime on white supremacy or something while you’re at it.

Conservatives: Loudly complain that no one is reporting on the crime, even though it’s literally all over every single news network in the country. Point out the scientific fact that only illegals commit crimes, and that no American has ever so much as hurt a fly or a Native American or anyone in the Middle East.

What terms should we use to refer to illegal immigrants?

Liberals: Undocumented heroes, victims of border law oppression, saviors of America.

Conservatives: We can’t post most of the terms they use to refer to illegal immigrants. We are a Christian site, for goodness’ sake.

Tim Keller’s Full Endorsement of Being Gay and Christian — Pulpit & Pen

The Apostle Paul warns us:

“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”

No warning has been more marginalized or flat out ignored by the professing, visible church than this one from our Lord’s great servant and apostle. There are many dangerous voices of error invading the church to condemn God’s Word on the clear, biblical truth regarding the sin of homosexuality. This blog post will focus on just one movement afoot that in its cleverness and subtlty has and will continue a full, frontal assault on God’s truth.

Sam Allberry, who identifies as “gay and Christian” and pastors St. Mary’s Church in Maidenhead UK (Pictured above), promotes the idea that one can be homosexual and Christian, and therefore must have inclusion in the Lord’s Church. The Word of the one, true God clearly proclaims otherwise:

“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.”        1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Sam Allberry has established a ministry website that is solely devoted to the false teaching of “gay” Christianity; http://www.livingout.com. While there are many prominent, professing evangelicals supporting Allberry and his ministry, none are as devoted to Allberry’s philosophy as the ever-popular Dr. Tim Keller, who has been behind the scenes quietly and cleverly pushing the same ideas for years promoting his powerless, non-transforming and false gospel. In June 2018 Allberry hosted a conference through his Living Out ministry with Keller as keynote speaker.

The conference was promoted with an Identity in Christ theme, but it was quite clear from the beginning that they have a far different agenda, as they promote the idea of ignoring the homosexual’s sexual preference (or “identity”) and focus instead on their “identity in Christ”.

The glaring problem is that there is no such thing as a Christian homosexual, therefore they have no identity in Christ.

I became a Christian in my late teens, and not long after that I came to acknowledge that I was gay. I was committed to celibacy. At university I said I was gay, and I never experienced homophobic treatment from other Christians. This has convinced me that love and unconditional acceptance of gay people does not require approval of same-sex activity. Love and acceptance was my consistent experience. I was involved in the Christian Union in my university and I served on its ‘exec’ for a year, working alongside other young evangelicals who all knew I was gay and only ever treated me with great respect and affection. My evangelical college chaplain, also conservative about sexuality, strongly encouraged me to pursue ordination. I found the church to be a deeply supportive and affirming place. I was nurtured, given responsibility in ministry, and encouraged towards ordination. It is undeniable and indefensible that in the church there has been prejudice and even mistreatment of people because of their sexuality. But my experience has convinced me that this prejudice and mistreatment does not come from believing what the Bible says about marriage and sex.

Also note that the many “accepting” Christians Doherty claims to have encountered in college who never judged but instead respected and accepted him unconditionally, and with great affection, were not Christian at all, as the true believer walks in truth and will call a man to repentance:

“When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.”  Ezekiel 33:8-9

This conference illustrates just how cleverly deceptive this movement really is, as they manipulate the audience emotionally with heart-wrenching testimonies between each and every session by “homosexual Christians” who have “decided” to be celibate for Christ, for which they surely deserve all the glory and applause!

August 24, 2018 Afternoon Verse Of The Day

The Character of God

The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. (3:9)

Peter’s support for the second coming culminated in an appeal to the character of God. The thrust of his argument is this: The reason Christ’s return is not immediate is because God is patient with sinners. Any waiting is attributable only to God’s gracious longsuffering. It is not that He is indifferent, powerless, or distracted. Instead, it is just the opposite. Because He is merciful and forbearing, He delays so that elect sinners might come to repentance (1 Peter 3:20; cf. Matt. 4:17; 9:13; Mark 6:12; Luke 15:10; Rom. 2:4; 2 Tim. 2:25; Rev. 2:5).

Despite the ridicule of the scoffers, the Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness. Slow (bradunō) means “delayed,” or “late,” implying the idea of “loitering.” None of that applies to God; His seeming slowness is not due to lack of ability, forgetfulness, or apathy. In fulfilling His promise, God is working everything precisely according to His perfect plan and schedule (cf. 2 Sam. 22:31; Ps. 111:5, 7–8; Isa. 25:1; Jer. 33:14; 2 Cor. 1:20). That same principle applied to Christ’s first coming: “But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law” (Gal. 4:4).

Patient translates a form of the verb makrothumeō. It is a compound word combimbining “large” with “great anger.” Peter used it here to show that God has a vast capacity for storing up anger and wrath before it spills over in judgment (cf. Ex. 34:6; Joel 2:13; Matt. 18:23–27; Rom. 2:4; 9:22). While that judgment is inescapable and deadly, God’s merciful patience beforehand gives the chosen the opportunity for reconciliation and salvation (see 3:15). His wrath toward the individual sinner is immediately appeased whenever that person repents and believes the gospel (cf. Luke 15:7, 10; Acts 13:47–48).

You refers both to Peter’s immediate readers and any who will ever come to faith in Jesus Christ (cf. John 10:16). Some have argued that you implies the salvation of all people. But the immediate context and comments about “the destruction of ungodly men” (v. 7) clearly limits the you to believers. The letter is addressed to “those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ.… He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature” (1:1b, 4a; emphasis added). From then on, the use of you is directed at believers (2:1–3; 3:2). The you of 3:1 are “beloved.” The words of verse 8, “do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved” (emphasis added), again link the you to the beloved. The you with whom the Lord is patient are therefore the same beloved ones He waits to bring to repentance.

Those who perish—“utterly destroyed” in eternal hell—suffer damnation because they are dead in their sins and refuse God’s offer of salvation in Christ. At the same time, it is clear from Scripture that the Father takes no delight in the death of the lost: “ ‘For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies,’ declares the Lord God. ‘Therefore, repent and live’ ” (Ezek. 18:32; cf. Jer. 13:17; Matt. 23:37). In fact, God actually offers salvation to all (cf. Isa. 45:21–22; 55:1; Matt. 11:28; John 3:16; Acts 17:30; 1 Tim. 2:3–4; Rev. 22:17).

Scripture clearly states that God thoroughly hates sin (Deut. 25:16; 1 Kings 14:22; Pss. 5:4–6; 45:7; Prov. 6:16–19; 15:9; Hab. 1:13) and therefore its potential consequences for every person, including eternal punishment in hell. Yet, in order to display His own glory in wrath, God chose to save some and not to save others. As the apostle Paul explained:

So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I raised you up, to demonstrate My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed throughout the whole earth.” So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires. (Rom. 9:16–18; cf. Josh. 11:20; John 1:13; 6:37, 44; Rom. 11:7)

The context indicates that any and all are limited to the elect—namely all those whom the Lord has chosen and will call to Himself. Put another way, Christ will not come back until every person whom God has chosen is saved. By using the term you (a reference to Peter’s believing readers), the apostle limits any and all to the realm of elect human beings.

Of course, once all of the elect are accounted for, God’s patience will run out. Having given the world as much time as He has sovereignly determined, God will pour out His wrath upon the earth. While His patience currently holds back His judgment, the time of grace that mankind now enjoys, however long it seems by human standards, will not last forever (cf. Gen. 6:3).[1]

The power of God’s word revealed through his promise (v. 9)

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise. We must all dispel from our minds any idea of a doddery, old-looking, white-haired person who is slow on the uptake, some super Santa Claus up in the sky. That view is not only wrong, it is also blasphemous, for God is the most dynamic being of all. Yet he is also the most loving, caring and merciful being.

God always keeps his word, as the Second Coming will reveal.[2]

3:9 / The explanation of divine delay? The Lord is not slow (the Greek word means to loiter, be slack, be late) as some charge. He is indeed able to fulfill his word and is not indifferent about doing so. The reason for the delay is that he wants to give every possible opportunity to all to come to repentance (1 Tim. 2:4). The Lord has no pleasure in wanting anyone to perish. Some are going to perish (v. 7), but it is certainly not God’s will that they should do so.[3]

Peter’s comment (3:9)

Peter follows his quotation with an explanation. Why had the Christians to remember this? Because God was being accused of slowness, or even of being ‘slack’. So he stresses in verse 10 that ‘the day of the Lord will come’ (‘will come’ is placed first in the original, for emphasis). Whether those who perceive this slowness are the recruiting false teachers, or some Christians who are starting to be swayed, does not affect their accusation. God has clearly promised to judge, so why the lack of action?

The answer, says Peter, lies in correctly understanding that psalm. If Psalm 90:3 (‘You turn men back to dust’) refers back to Genesis 3:3 (humanity’s creation and fall), then the problem is given the widest possible scope. God forbade the man and woman to eat the fruit, saying, ‘When you eat of it you will surely die.’ Although they did eat, they did not die immediately because the Lord mercifully extended the possibility of salvation. Instead of dying on the day of our disobedience, then, ‘the length of our days is seventy years—or eighty, if we have the strength’. But ‘all our days pass away under your wrath’. The Old Testament teaches that God is patient.9That, says Peter, is a lesson which the false teachers ‘deliberately forget’ (3:5), but which we must ‘not forget’ (3:8). It is not just that, in Bengel’s quaint phrase, ‘The age-measurer (so to speak) of God differs from the hour-reckoner of mortals’, but that it is for our benefit that God measures time on his timescale rather than on ours. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Is God then so patient that everyone will be saved? Some have taken this verse in that way, along with a handful of other verses that imply the same. But it is difficult to reconcile that interpretation of these words with what Peter says two verses earlier about the ‘destruction of ungodly men’ (3:7). It is probably better to say that here is a mystery at the heart of God, where without any contradiction he can will both salvation and judgment. It is because he actively wills both that the obedient death of Jesus saves us from his judgment. In one sense Jesus died for everyone, for ‘God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son’. But it is also true to say that he died only for those who are saved, for ‘whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life’. Eternal life is a free option for all, but perishing is the option that will be taken up by many.

In the light of this, Christians must be careful to use the time while God is being patient. First, bearing in mind that Peter’s direct appeal here is to you, we must make sure that we Christians are right with him. Peter speaks here primarily to Christians who are in danger of falling, with the awful warning of the judgment on the false teachers ringing in our ears. It is not enough that we can look back to a past knowledge of Christ. Peter warns us to be on continuous watch lest our lives stretch God’s patience to the limit.

Michael Green is surely right to add that ‘the logical corollary of this verse is that Christians should use the time before the advent for preaching the gospel’, telling others of God’s patience with them. Although several parts of the New Testament speak of the apparent delay in Christ’s return, and one of the major concerns of the New Testament is how we live in the period before the return, surprisingly few tell us the reasons for the delay. Peter’s reason here, that the slowness is caused by God’s patience, must mean that we are to use the time left to spread the news about it. Paul echoes this when he asks, ‘Do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realising that God’s kindness leads you towards repentance?’ Evangelism leaps to the top of the Christian agenda.

Christians have often responded to the apparent ‘problem’ of the delay in Christ’s return in one of two ways. One reaction has been to become fixated with the minutiae of the Bible’s obscurer parts, and obsessed with charts and plans depicting how God is going to fulfil his promises and how the current political crisis only proves its imminence. This inevitably gives rise to inward-looking Christians, who do not see that the reason for God’s apparent delay is that he has a task for us in the meantime. It also produces sceptical non-Christians, who see, more clearly than we often do, that we are being duped by people who only want us to buy their books. The second response, more usual among the academic community, has been to interpret the delay as indicating that God’s plan is not the personal return of Christ but the extension of his kingdom by other means, whether political, economic, revolutionary or social. Rather than fostering inward-looking Christians, this often produces people who are passionately concerned for issues of justice and mercy in ways that put more traditional Bible-believers to shame. But it requires a radical reworking of the New Testament teaching, and leads to a different kind of scepticism among non-Christians, who see clear biblical doctrines being jettisoned for the sake of a political agenda.

How much wiser we would be if we admitted ignorance over the precise timing of Jesus’ return! Even the Lord Jesus himself did not know when it would be. We should therefore keep a level head at times of international conflict and upheaval,16 and build on the firm information he has given us—that he will return, and that he has tasks for us to work at until he comes. The challenge, then, is to be neither inward-looking obscurantists nor downward-looking secularists, but Christians who are motivated by looking both outward to fulfil the Great Commandment18 and upward to fulfil the Great Commission. In Peter Lewis’s words, ‘The delay of Christ’s second coming to salvation is not, after all, the failure of God’s plan, but rather the condition of its success.’20[4]

9. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Because the Christians of the first century expected the imminent return of the Lord and waited patiently, they needed a word of encouragement from Peter.

  • “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise.” The term Lord in this verse and the next (v. 10) is a synonym for “God.” In other words, Peter refers not to Jesus but rather to God with his use of an Old Testament designation for God. Peter alludes to the Old Testament prophecy of Habakkuk:

For the revelation awaits an appointed time;

it speaks of the end

and will not prove false.

Though it linger, wait for it;

it will certainly come and will not delay. [2:3]

The writer of Hebrews, who assures his readers that God will fulfill the promises that he made to them, quotes this same Old Testament prophecy (see Heb. 10:37). Why does God delay the return of Christ? The cause of the delay stems not from indifference or inattentiveness on the part of God. It lies in God’s grace and mercy toward sinners. He allows them time to repent of their sins. Jesus will return when God’s patience has ended, when the time allotted has expired, and when the last believer has accepted Christ as Savior. “Not human sin, but divine forbearance, which cannot be constrained, determines the delay. It is the sovereign God who graciously grants an interval for repentance.” God works out his plan and purpose even though man expresses doubts.

  1. “As some understand slowness.” We understand that the “some” in this verse are not the scoffers (v. 3) but believers who have been influenced by these scoffers. Some Christians are unable to explain the delay of Christ’s return and begin to doubt as they listen to the scoffers. They need not doubt, because God is in full control.
  2. “He is patient with you.” Notice that Peter addresses the readers, not the scoffers, when he writes the pronoun you. He indicates that God does not judge his people hastily, but grants them sufficient time to come to repentance (compare 1 Peter 3:20).
  3. “Not wanting anyone to perish.” Peter is not teaching universalism in this sentence. In his epistle, he clearly states that the false teachers and the scoffers are condemned and face destruction (see 2:3; 3:7; Rom. 9:22). Does not God want the false teachers to be saved? Yes, but they disregard God’s patience toward them, they employ their knowledge of Jesus Christ against him, and they willfully reject God’s offer of salvation. They, then, bear full responsibility for their own condemnation.
  4. “[God wants] everyone to come to repentance.” God provides time for man to repent, but repentance is an act that man must perform. Take the case of Esau, who led a godless life and sold his inheritance rights to his brother Jacob. When he wanted to receive the blessing, Esau was rejected. “He could bring about no change of mind, though he sought the blessing with tears” (Heb. 12:17; also compare Rom. 2:4). Likewise the scoffers in Peter’s day refuse to come to repentance, even though God is granting them a period of grace.[5]

3:9 God has promised to end the history of ungodly men with judgment. If there seems to be delay, it is not because God is unfaithful to His promise. It is because He is patient. He does not want any to perish. His desire is that all should come to repentance. He purposely extends the time of grace so that men might have every opportunity to be saved.

In Isaiah 61:2 we read of the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of His vengeance. This suggests that He delights to show mercy and that judgment is His strange work (Isa. 28:21). It may also indicate that He can extend His longsuffering 1000 years and condense His judgments into one day.

He waited 120 years before He sent the flood. Now He has waited several thousand years before destroying the world with fire.[6]

3:9 The delay of God’s judgment is not due to slackness, but to the Lord’s longsuffering attitude toward His people. not willing that any should perish: This text does not teach that God actually decrees that all will be saved (universalism). The reference here is not to God’s decree, but to His desire. Obviously everything that a sovereign God decrees will occur. Here Peter is describing the sovereign God’s desire that all people would turn to Him and turn away from unprofitable lives (1 Tim. 2:4).[7]

Progressive Christians and their doctrines of devils (Reprise) — Christian Research Network

Do not be fooled by professing Christians who prefer either “progressive Christian” or “social justice Christian” over evangelical.  It matters not what trendy terms they come up with to describe themselves, these folks are leftists.  Some are Marxists.  And others are Communists.  As I said in a series of essays I wrote entitled “Liberals created the culture of evil and death” the visible Church has been infiltrated by:

…ubiquitous, aggressive liberals many of whom are renowned pastors, authors, conference speakers, missionaries, televangelists, radio hosts, and CEOs of Christian organizations.  As of late, even some of our most beloved evangelical leaders appear to be morphing into theological liberals.  

The extent of movement to liberal ideology varies with each individual, but in certain cases they have gone completely off the rails. False doctrine abounds in books, Bible studies and Bibles authored by notable Christians and promoted by so-called Christian publishers and book sellers.  We have been duly warned about this sort of thing happening:

“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.” 1 Tim. 4:1

One such liberal is Jim Wallis, founder of Sojourners. For the remainder of this piece, my focus will be on Mr. Wallis who leads a pack of liberal wolves who cover themselves in sheep skin.  Forewarned is forearmed.  Once we’re aware of who the wolves are, we won’t be taken in by them – and we’ll be equipped to warn others about the liberal social justice gospel…that saves no one. 

In a blog post entitled “Progressive Christians to ‘Take Back Their Faith’ After Election,” Derryck Green informs us that progressive Christians were apoplectic over Donald Trump winning the election.  Green even “names names.”  For instance, he tells us that Rachel Held Evans was very unhappy about Trump’s triumph over Hillary Clinton.  Evans is a popular author, speaker and blogger who took to her blog to bewail the results: “We’re about to witness firsthand what happens when the established Church compromises its moral authority and sells out the marginalized ― refugees, immigrants, religious and ethnic minorities, sexual assault survivors, the sick and those with disabilities, and LGBT people ― for the promise of power. It won’t be pretty.”  Unfortunately, this progressive “Christian” has the ear of a large number of women.

Benjamin Corey is another name Green mentioned.  Corey suggested that: “This election revealed that a far larger branch of Christianity has been married off to political power than we previously thought,” emphasizing that the religious right is more concerned with political power than the actual gospel of Christ.

Green also mentioned Rev. Wallis:

Jim Wallis, founder of Sojourners and author of America’s Original Sin, claimed, “White Christians voted just like white people in America did, and being Christian didn’t matter much. So how do we teach white Christians, white evangelicals to be more Christian than white? That’s the issue going forward.”

Wallis – reflecting on Jesus’ counsel regarding the relationship between treating a ‘stranger’ and treating Jesus – suggested that pastors allow their churches to become sanctuaries to protect illegal aliens from deportation.

To an extent, there’s some truth about the concerns of progressive Christians. Corey’s observation regarding evangelicals having become too cozy with political power, which has muted the volume, consistency, and effectiveness of their prophetic political witness, is a legitimate concern.

But where’s the moral balance and condemnation of progressive Christians for having done the same? What about Episcopalians, Presbyterians (USA), a segment of Methodists, and other left-leaning Christians who’re guilty of preferring political power and cultural cache to the Christian gospel.

Whether one agrees or disagrees, at least conservative evangelicals can be praised for attempting to clarify – or redeem – what it means to be an evangelical and have a responsible and biblically articulate political witness in the age of Donald Trump. (Source)

It seems students, faculty, staff and alumni at Fuller Theological Seminary took Jim Wallis’ suggestion and ran with it. A group from the seminary got together and penned a letter to President Labberton, et. al, with the heading: “Fuller Theological Seminary Sanctuary for Undocumented Immigrants requesting that ‘Fuller begins the necessary process to declare every campus a sanctuary for undocumented students and workers.’” The group collectively whined that the results of the election caused students to feel dismayed and disoriented.  Moreover, the letter presented their version of the gospel:

In the past week Dr. Labberton and Dr. Mouw wrote of Fuller Seminary’s non-negotiable commitment to the evangel, the gospel, which calls us to faithfully enact God’s good news of love, justice, and mercy.

Faithfully enacting God’s good news of love, justice, and mercy is not the true Gospel of Jesus Christ.  No.  What this is, brethren, is the social justice gospel.  Historic, orthodox Christianity has never taught liberalism’s faux gospel for the reason that it’s not the good news we find in Scripture, it’s a lie from the pit of hell!

Hopefully this information gives you a sense of the negative impact progressive Christians are having on the visible Church. So in closing let me now re-focus on Jim Wallis and the principle role he has played in the spread of the social gospel. Here’s an excerpt from part 3 of “Liberals created the culture of evil and death”:

To give readers a sense of what kind of person to be on the lookout for let me introduce one of the most dangerous wolves in Christendom, the Rev. Jim Wallis.  This man wears many hats.  He is the founder of Sojourner’s Magazine, speaker, author and activist.  He’s also President Obama’s “spiritual advisor.”  This alone speaks volumes.  Rev. Wallis insists that he’s an evangelical Christian even though he has abandoned the biblical gospel for the “social gospel.”  He believes he’s on a mission from God to assist the poor and oppressed to bring forth the Kingdom of God on earth.

David Noebel sheds light on some of the good reverend’s activities:

“Wallis’ Sojourners enterprise has been a radical, socialistic undertaking from the start. Frontpage Magazine (March 17, 2009) says, ‘As one of its first acts, Sojourners formed a commune in the Washington, D.C., neighborhood of Southern Columbia Heights, where members shared their finances and participated in various activist campaigns that centered on attacking the U.S. foreign policy, denouncing American ‘imperialism,’ and extolling Marxist revolutionary movements in the Third World.’” (Source

Jim Wallis also champions unbiblical movements such as the Emergent Church, Spiritual Formation (contemplative prayer/mysticism) and what he refers to as “spirituality.”  Here is his view of prayer: 

I pray, but there are many understandings about prayer. For many, prayer is talking to God, sometimes a great list of requests and needs—sort of like a child’s Christmas list mailed to Santa Claus. But at least for me, prayer is becoming a time of listening rather than talking. There is so much noise in our world and our lives (much of our own making); prayer becomes a quiet space that enables us to stop talking long enough to see what God might be trying to say to us.

The disciplines of prayer, silence, and contemplation as practiced by the monastics and mystics are precisely that—stopping the noise, slowing down, and becoming still so that God can break through all our activity and noise to speak to us. Prayer serves to put all parts of our lives in God’s presence, reminding us how holy our humanity really is. (The Great Awakening: Seven Ways To Change The World, 290) (Source)

Wallis is promoting unbiblical contemplative/centering prayer. 

On homosexuality he believes: 

[T]he major differences of theology and biblical interpretation in the church with regard to issues such as the nature of homosexuality, gay marriage, and ordination are not issues that should be allowed to divide the churches –that local churches should lead the way here, and that an honest, open, respectful, and, hopefully, loving dialogue should characterize the church on these very controversial questions. Issues which are clearly unbiblical, such as the sin of homosexuality, should not be allowed to divide us?  Really?

Are professing followers of Jesus Christ supposed to ignore the Bible’s explicit teaching on marriage, one man and one woman for life, so that men can marry men?  Should we really go against what God says in His Word regarding His plan for sexuality and marriage and adopt a “pro-gay” theology to accommodate a small group of gays and lesbians?  The answer is “May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written, ‘That Thou mightiest be justified in Thy words, And mightiest prevail when Thou art judged.’” (Romans 3:4)

Even though Wallis is a Red-Letter Christian and a Wild Goose chaser, he poses as an evangelical.  Sadly, he and his ilk have many starry-eyed, misguided followers who, like most liberals, wish to farm out their obligations to tax payers.

Liberals such as Jim Wallis dub themselves “progressive Christians” and more recently “social justice Christians” (SJC).  Social justice has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?  But hold your horses!  SJC has its roots in communism and has the same aim: The common good.

Sounds magnanimous, doesn’t it?  Don’t be fooled!  What these people are striving for is government transfer of wealth from one group of citizens to another to level the playing field.  Some liberals use Genesis 4:9 “I am my brother’s keeper” to make their case.  Leftist hypocrites have no problem quoting Scripture to defend wealth redistribution, but when conservative Christians quote Scripture to defend their opposition to abortion, homosexuality, same-sex marriage, and so forth they cry foul!

In an essay entitled “A Biblical View of Social Justice,” John Wheaton writes:

“[I]t is essential that Christians clearly define what social justice entails. On its face, the term has a positive connotation that conveys a seemingly strong sense of virtue and morality. Basing a claim on an appeal to “social justice” provides the claim holder with a degree of persuasive advantage – a kind of moral blessing on his or her political, theological, or social ideas.   However, social justice involves much more than a superficial label or feelings of compassion. It must involve a clear understanding and delineation of each social problem, the root cause of the problem, and the best solution for the problem. In short, “Good justice requires good judgment.”

For the SJC Christianity is a lifestyle.  Their morality comes, not from Scripture, but from popular opinion.  Although they believe that some things in the scriptures are true, the Bible doesn’t hold a place of authority in their lives.  As one blogger put it, “the emphasis is more on growth thru the process of work and serving others.”  In other words, a person must have faith plus he/she must do good “works” in order to be saved.  This teaching is demonstrably unbiblical.  “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Eph. 2:8, 9) (Bold added)

Confused 3Many SJCs are Darwinian evolutionists, environmental extremists (save the planet, not souls), and they think nothing of co-mingling Christianity with paganism gleaned largely from Eastern mysticism.  They are supposedly Christians, yet many of them support abortion, the normalization of homosexuality, and same-sex “marriage.”  What is most telling is their denial of basic biblical doctrines such as the inerrancy of Scripture; the substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ as God’s judgment for sin; Hell; and Jesus Christ as the only way to God and instead hold to collective salvation – all roads lead to God (religious pluralism).

What it all boils down to is that many SJC’s are cultural Christians.  They’re not regenerate (born again) believers.  In fact, they’re hostile to the true gospel. Moreover, their goal is the redefinition of traditional Christianity.

Liberal wolves are spreading a false gospel or what Peter called “damnable heresies.” (2 Peter 2:1–2)  In a word, evil.
