September 13: Who Can Bring Me Down?

Obadiah 1:1–21; Acts 11:19–12:25; Job 21:17–34

“The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of a rock, the heights of its dwelling, you who say in your heart: ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’ ” (Obad 3).

Pride is an especially dangerous sin because it deludes us into elevating ourselves above everyone else. It can even lead us to betray or hurt other people. In this passage Obadiah addresses the Edomites, who lived in the hills above Judah. The Edomites should have helped Judah when they were attacked, but instead they conducted raids. They believed that they were superior to and had been wronged by the Judahites and that their actions were therefore justified. This type of pride puts us in a precarious position. No wonder the Bible addresses it often.

Pride can get the best of us when we place ourselves in the “clefts” above others. It usually emerges from one of two places: Either we believe that we’re as important as people tell us we are (the folly of the celebrity), or we believe that we’re better than everyone else and that others just don’t understand us. Either way, pride is dangerous. In the words of C.S. Lewis, “Pride always means enmity … not only enmity between man and man, but enmity to God.”

Job is also accused of pride—but unjustly. He confronts his persecutors about retribution related to pride: “How often is the lamp of the wicked put out, and their disaster comes upon them? He distributes pains in his anger” (Job 21:17). Job recognizes the ultimate source of pride: a refusal to fear Yahweh. It’s difficult to maintain a superior position when we realize that everything we have comes from Him. When we fear Yahweh—when we acknowledge that He created and reigns over all things—we discover our rightful place. We can then lift Him back to the place He deserves—as ruler over us, our master.

What are you prideful about, and what can you do to remedy the problem?

September 13 Pursuing Truthfulness

“Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth” (Eph. 6:14).

Truthfulness is the best defense against Satan’s lies.

The first piece of armor Paul mentions in Ephesians 6:14 is the belt of truth. Roman soldiers of his day wore a tunic, which was a large square piece of material with holes for the head and arms. A belt kept the tunic from flying loosely and getting in the way in the midst of battle.

The phrase “having girded your loins” was commonly used for gathering up the loose material of one’s tunic or robe when preparing for battle or travel. It speaks of preparedness, as in Exodus 12:11, where God tells the children of Israel to gird their loins for their exodus from Egypt. Jesus used it in a figurative sense in Luke 12:35, where He warns us to gird our loins or “be dressed in readiness” for His second coming. Peter said we’re to gird our minds for action (1 Peter 1:13).

The Greek word translated “truth” in Ephesians 6:14 can refer either to the content of that which is true or to an attitude of truthfulness. Both are implied in the verse. In Ephesians 4 Paul combines both aspects in warning us not to be “tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming” (vv. 14–15). Instead, we are to embrace sound doctrine and always speak the truth in love.

The way to defend yourself against the cunning deceptions of Satan is to gird yourself with a thorough knowledge of God’s Word and a firm commitment to obedience. Yet many Christians remain vulnerable because they’re unwilling to do that.

Paul exhorted the Philippians to excel in “knowledge” and “discernment” and to remain “sincere and blameless” until in Christ’s presence (Phil. 1:9–10), and you must do the same. Never be content with your present level of spirituality. Keep learning and growing. Demonstrate an attitude of truthfulness that reveals your commitment to God’s Word and your readiness for battle.

Suggestions for Prayer:  Is your life characterized by truthfulness? If not, you’re a ready target for Satan’s schemes. Confess this to the Lord, and ask Him to cleanse your heart and to give you a love for His truth. Begin today to apply His Word to your life.

For Further Study: Read verses 1–4 and 13–15 of 2 Corinthians 11, noting the tactics of Satan and his servants.[1]

Planned Parenthood Has A New Face, But It’s Still An Abortion Giant

Planned Parenthood’s new director has released a video introducing herself to America. As the new face of the nation’s largest abortion provider, she wants to carefully continue the rebranding campaign Planned Parenthood is using to try to mainstream itself. Planned Parenthood isn’t just abortions and birth control, the campaign asserts. It’s women’s health care — and as this video tells us that’s now just normal healthcare.

Dr. Leana Wen is an immigrant from China. She came here with her family as a small child. In her video she highlights how dire their situation was on entry to America with only $40 to their names. From this beginning she went on to become an emergency medicine physician, a career choice aimed at ensuring all people are able to get medical care without being turned away.

Rather than going into clinic work aimed at total family care for families and communities below the poverty line like FQHCs, Wen instead moved into public health in Baltimore. There she described her work as addressing the teen pregnancy rate. Baltimore’s problems are deep rooted, with a 21.9 percent poverty rate, a teen pregnancy rate three times the national rate, and one of the highest murder rates in the country. During her time as Baltimore’s health commissioner, Wen sued the current administration to keep federal funding for teen sex ed, despite mixed results from those programs.

Leading with images of Wen and her family, including her and her baby, doesn’t change the nature of Planned Parenthood. Annually they perform 381,384 abortions a year or 881 a day. That’s thousands of babies who will never be lovingly be held in their mother’s arms. Planned Parenthood only makes 3,889 adoption referrals yearly, showing a huge disparity between the number of abortions they perform and the number of mothers who make an adoption plan after visiting them.

For all their talk and publicity campaigns centered around the idea of healthcare, Planned Parenthood performs a very narrow and select range of services. Don’t seek them out for routine childhood immunizations or sick care like antibiotics for an ear infection for an adult man. Don’t expect them to be able to provide a mammogram or offer maternity care. Planned Parenthood is in the business of providing abortions and getting women and teen girls on birth control. This is the healthcare Wen is so eager as a physician to oversee.

The ad suggested that Planned Parenthood is a good source of support and care for immigrants. The ad also includes an anecdote from Wen’s time working in a hospital. A girl died under her care after a tragic home abortion gone wrong. Not noted at this point is that abortion is currently legal in all 50 states. The legality of abortion allows babies to die, and despite the claims that legal abortion keeps it safe mothers still die, too.

Mothers like Karnamaya Mongar, who died at the hands of a doctor in a legal abortion here in America, also weren’t included. Her story isn’t featured in a touching video montage aimed at fundraising for Planned Parenthood, because that truth is inconvenient and painful.

Putting a doctor at the head of Planned Parenthood doesn’t change its mission. Rather, it’s a chance to ask how we entered into a culture of death in which women are told they can only get ahead if they sacrifice their most vulnerable is one we’re comfortable allowing to exist.

Persecution Largest House Church in Beijing Shut Down by the Government | Persecution

09/13/2018 Washington D.C. (International Christian Concern) – International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that on September 9, more than 20 officials from the Chaoyang District Ethnic and Religious Affairs Office and Civil Affairs Bureau raided Zion Church in Beijing. The head pastor, Jin Mingri, was taken away for interrogation and released later on the same day.

Officials posted several notices at Zion Church’s headquarters, located at Longbaochen Commercial Building in Chaoyang District, accusing the church of “conducting unauthorized activities and disturbing social order under the name of civil organization.” As a result, the District’s Civil Affairs Bureau legally banned the church and the use of its “illegal religious venue,” while also confiscating its “illegal promotional material.”

According to Asia News, Zion Church had enjoyed a certain degree of freedom until recently. In April, when the 1,500-member church refused to install closed-circuit television cameras, the government briefly turned off the church’s water and power supplies. Last week, the rented hall the congregation was using became off limits.

“Unlawful dark forces vandalized Zion Church’s sign, but it will not destroy the church that everlasting God has built!”

After seeing the church’s sign destroyed yesterday, Pastor Jin sorrowfully said, “Unlawful dark forces vandalized Zion Church’s sign, but it will not destroy the church that everlasting God has built!”

In response to the crackdown against Zion Church and other Christian communities, hundreds of house church pastors and Christian leaders from around the country signed a joint statement on September 1, publicly expressing their faith and their stance against the government’s denial of religious freedom. The crackdown has included demolishing crosses on church buildings, violently removing religious symbols from Christians’ homes, forcing and threatening churches to join religious organizations sanctioned by the government, forcing churches to hang the national flag or sing secular songs praising the government, banning children from entering churches or receiving religious education, and depriving believers of the right to gather freely.

As of September 7, 305 Christians have signed on to this statement, prepared to bear the potential consequences—even the loss of their freedom and their lives.

Gina Goh, ICC’s Regional Manager, said, “The banning of Zion Church, along with the intensified crackdown against Christians in Henan and other provinces in China, demonstrates the government’s absolute disregard for religious freedom. The future awaiting China’s house church Christians should be everyone’s concern. We urge the international community to speak up for persecuted Chinese Christians and be their voice as Beijing tries to mute them and alter their faith to fit into communist ideology.”

Let’s Take a Walk Down Memory Lane, Shall We? Members of Congress Who Were Active in the KKK

OH…….did I mention that out of 20 names, 17 were Democrats? Yeah, that’s weird, huh?

Let’s cut right to the chase:

Robert Byrd

Was a recruiter for the Klan while in his 20s and 30s, rising to the title of Kleagle and Exalted Cyclops of his local chapter. After leaving the group, Byrd spoke in favor of the Klan during his early political career. Though he claimed to have left the organization in 1943, Byrd, wrote a letter in 1946 to the group’s Imperial Wizard stating “The Klan is needed today as never before, and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia.” Byrd attempted to explain or defend his former membership in the Klan in his 1958 U.S. Senate campaign when he was 41 years old.[1] Byrd, a Democrat, eventually became his party leader in the Senate. Byrd later said joining the Klan was his “greatest mistake.”[2] However, in a 2001 incident Byrd, Democrat, repeatedly used the phrase “white niggers” on a national television broadcast.

Edward Douglas White

a Democrat and the Chief Justice of the United States, was a known member of the KKK in his home state of Louisiana, where he had served a U.S. Senator.[4][5]

Hugo Black

In 1921, Hugo Black successfully defended E. R. Stephenson in his trial for the murder of a Catholic priest, Fr. James E. Coyle. Black, a Democrat, joined the Ku Klux Klan shortly afterwards, in order to gain votes from the anti-Catholic element in Alabama. He built his winning Senate campaign around multiple appearances at KKK meetings across Alabama. Late in life Black told an interviewer:

News of his membership was a secret until shortly after he was confirmed as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Black later said that joining the Klan was a mistake, but he went on to say, “I would have joined any group if it helped get me votes.”

Theodore G. Bilbo

a Democrat, the Governor of Mississippi and later the U.S. Senator for Mississippi, was a founder of the Mississippi chapter of the KKK.

John Brown Gordon

a Democrat and the U.S. Senator for Georgia, was a founder of the KKK in his home state of Georgia.

Joseph E. Brown

a Democrat and the U.S. Senator for Georgia, was a key supporter of the KKK in his home state

Elmer David Davies

a Democrat and a Federal Judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, was a member of the KKK whilst at university

Edward L. Jackson

became Governor of Indiana as a Republican in 1925 and his administration came under fire for granting undue favor to the Klan’s agenda and associates. Jackson was further damaged by the arrest and trial of Grand Dragon D. C. Stephenson for the rape and murder of Madge Oberholtzer. When it was revealed that Jackson had attempted to bribe former Gov. Warren T. McCray with $10,000 to appoint a Klansman to a local office, Jackson was taken to court. His case ended with a hung jury, and Jackson ended his political career in disgrace.

Rice W. Means

a Republican U.S. Senator from Colorado, was a member of the Klan in Colorado. He served a three-year term in Congress before losing renomination to Republican Charles W. Waterman in the 1926 election.

Clarence Morley

a Republican and the Governor of Colorado. He was a KKK member and a strong supporter of Prohibition. He tried to ban the Catholic Church from using sacramental wine and attempted to have the University of Colorado fire all Jewish and Catholic professors

Bibb Graves

a Democrat, who was the Governor of Alabama. He lost his first campaign for governor in 1922, but four years later, with the secret endorsement of the Ku Klux Klan, he was elected to his first term as governor. Graves was almost certainly the Exalted Cyclops (chapter president) of the Montgomery chapter of the Klan. Graves, like Hugo Black, used the strength of the Klan to further his electoral prospects.

Clifford Walker

a Democrat and the Governor of Georgia, was revealed to be a Klan member by the press in 1924.

George Gordon

a Democrat and Congressman for Tennessee’s 10th congressional district, became one of the Klan’s first members. In 1867, Gordon became the Klan’s first Grand Dragon for the Realm of Tennessee, and wrote its Precept, a book describing its organization, purpose, and principles

John Tyler Morgan

a Democrat and the U.S. Senator for Alabama, was the Grand Dragon of the KKK in Alabama

Edward Peltus

a Democrat and the U.S. Senator for Alabama, was also a Grand Dragon of the KKK in Alabama.

John W. Morton

a Democrat, was the Tennessee Secretary of State and was the founder of the Nashville chapter of the KKK

William L. Saunders

a Democrat, was the North Carolina Secretary of State and was the founder of the North Carolina chapter

John Clinton Porter

a Democrat, was a member of the Klan in the early 1920s and served as mayor of Los Angeles

Benjamin F. Stapleton

a Democrat, was mayor of Denver in the 1920s–1940s. He was a Klan member in the early 1920s and appointed fellow Klansmen to positions in municipal government.

David Duke

a politician who ran in both Democrat and Republican presidential primaries, was openly involved in the leadership of the Ku Klux Klan.[29] He was founder and Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan in the mid-1970s; he re-titled his position as “National Director” and said that the KKK needed to “get out of the cow pasture and into hotel meeting rooms”. He left the organization in 1980. He ran for president in the 1988 Democratic presidential primaries. In 1989 Duke switched political parties from Democrat to Republican.[30] In 1989, he became a member of the Louisiana State Legislature from the 81st district, and was Republican Party chairman for St. Tammany Parish.

After the Civil War, it was the Republican Party who defended black – NOT Democrats.

Here is a poster which was used by the Dems to disparage the Republicans and exposed the Democratic Party’s pure RACISM.

An article I wrote in 2016:

A look at the RACIST Democratic Party Since the Civil War

Any questions?

A Stroll Down Memory Lane: Members of Congress Who Were Active in the KKK

But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness.

1 Corinthians 1:23

The Greek philosopher Pythagoras divided men into three classes: 1. Seekers after knowledge; 2. Seekers after honor; 3. Seekers after gain.

I wonder why he failed to notice two other classes: those who are not seeking anything and those who are seekers after God.

Let us add them to his list:

  1. Seekers after nothing. These are the human vegetables who live by their glands and their instincts. I refer to the millions of normal persons who have allowed their magnificent intellectual equipment to wither away from lack of exercise. Their reading matter is the sports page and the comic section; their music is whatever is popular and handy—and loud!
  2. Seekers after God. I am thinking of men and women who are God-hungry souls though their numbers may not be large. By nature they are no better than the rest of mankind, and by practice they have sometimes been worse. The one sign of their divine election is their insatiable thirst after the Source of their being. Thank the Lord for seekers after God, and their destiny lies in the hand of the One who gave His only begotten Son to die for the life of the world!

Dear Lord, I want to be known among my family and friends as a God-seeker. My destiny belongs to You, O Lord.[1]
