DECEMBER 6 AN AWESOMENESS ABOUT GOD

Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.

—Psalm 72:18-19

Worship also means to “express in some appropriate manner” what you feel. Now, expressing in some appropriate manner doesn’t mean that we always all express it in the same way all the time. And it doesn’t mean that you will always express your worship in the same manner. But it does mean that it will be expressed in some manner.

And what will be expressed? “A humbling but delightful sense of admiring awe and astonished wonder.” It is delightful to worship God, but it is also a humbling thing; and the man who has not been humbled in the presence of God will never be a worshiper of God at all. He may be a church member who keeps the rules and obeys the discipline, and who tithes and goes to conference, but he’ll never be a worshiper unless he is deeply humbled. “A humbling but delightful sense of admiring awe.” There’s an awesomeness about God which is missing in our day altogether; there’s little sense of admiring awe in the Church of Christ these days. WMJ004-005

Great God, I do indeed stand in admiring awe at the wondrous things You do. Remind me today of that awesomeness about You that I so often forget in my hurried life. Amen. [1]

December 6 Gaining Courage

Most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

Philippians 1:14

The implication of today’s verse is that before Paul’s imprisonment, the church in Rome lacked courage. When the believers saw that God provided for Paul and enabled him to have an incredible opportunity for outreach, they confidently began to proclaim the gospel. They realized that since God could minister through Paul in his condition, He could minister through them as well. As Paul’s strength became theirs, the leadership in Rome began “to speak the word without fear” (v. 14).

Does your joy ebb and flow according to the tide of earthly benefits? Do pleasure, possessions, prominence, prestige, reputation, comfort, and fulfillment or your own ambitions propel your joy? If they do, your joy will ebb and flow according to the shifting tides of life. But if your joy is tied to the progress of the gospel, it will never diminish. Fix your heart on the progress of the gospel, and your joy will be constant.[1]

Beware of the Bad and/or Ugly in the Church — The Watchman’s Bagpipes

Not all which claims to be a church of Christ is, nor are all who proclaim to be teaching Christ really teaching Christ.  Here are some more good examples of aberrations, apostasies, and even heresies to watch out for, and to protect yourself and others against.
Why is this man still a deacon, and why has he not been excommunicated? The Catholic Church needs to police its leaders.
Catholic leaders keep proving their religion is of the devilAnd again.
The burden of the heresy of purgatory for Roman Catholics can get quite bizarre.
Interfaith dialog” with Muslims just lets THEM undermine Christianity and our country.  Even Erwin Lutzer, in his book, The Church in Babylon, cites Muslims themselves making this claim!
James White — WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!?!?
The Bible says we are to obey the laws of the land, but that doesn’t seem to matter to the Catholic Church as theirJesuits are doing their best to assist illegal immigrant invasion into the USA.  If the Church doesn’t support this, then where is the denouncement from the Pope? Because the Pope himself is against national borders. (Just another example of the RCC NOT being a church of Christ.)
Andy Stanley is trying to sell a new book to finance his false teaching. The book, of course, is also false teaching. BEWARE!
William Lane Craig is usually a pretty good apologist for the Christian faith, but when it comes to Genesis, find an apologist who accepts God at his Word.
Good examination of false teacher Sarah Young and her books.
Be sure to miss this event — it is a cornucopia of false teachers!
And they call themselves a “Christian” college!
Lauren Daigle — Another Christian entertainer who doesn’t want to offend with the truth.
These “ministers” are nothing but Satan’s wolves leading people to hell.

France and Germany, Have You No Shame?
When you think certain nations have descended to the ultimate moral nadir of the universe, you never fail to be astonished with just how much farther they are capable of descending. A report in Tuesday’s Wall Street Journal states that France and Germany have just linked forces to salvage an effort to create back-channel payments to Iran, defying the U.S.-led effort to sanction the regime for its nuclear activity. This effort, known as “Special Forces Vehicle,” or SPV, amounts to nothing more than a brazen effort by the two nations to diminish the effort to sanction the Islamic Republic for their work towards making a nuclear bomb. Simply for money.

WARMING TREND: Yellow Vest Riots In Paris Over High Fuel Prices Now Sparking Global Backlash Against Climate Change Taxes
Support for Climate Change is a funny thing. On one hand, it is easy to rouse the masses with passionate speeches about solving man-made climate change. Everyone loves the cleverly designed Powerpoint presentations and compelling infographics, and it’s fun to share them on social media. But then when you try to make those same masses reach into their working class pockets and actually pay the ‘climate  tax’, you get another reaction entirely. In France, you got 7 days of bloody riots in the streets that threatened to pull the entire nation to the ground.

December 6, 2018 Afternoon Verse Of The Day

7[9] Hyssop (אֵזוֹב, ʾēzôb) was also used for sprinkling blood (cf. Lev 14:4–8; Nu 19:6–8, 17–21; Heb 9:19; see Zohary, Plants of the Bible, 96–97).[1]

7. Thou shalt purge me with hyssop. He still follows out the same strain of supplication; and the repetition of his requests for pardon proves how earnestly he desired it. He speaks of hyssop, in allusion to the ceremonies of the law; and though he was far from putting his trust in the mere outward symbol of purification, he knew that, like every other legal rite, it was instituted for an important end. The sacrifices were seals of the grace of God. In them, therefore, he was anxious to find assurance of his reconciliation; and it is highly proper that, when our faith is disposed at any time to waver, we should confirm it by improving such means of divine support. All which David here prays for is, that God would effectually accomplish, in his experience, what he had signified to his Church and people by these outward rites; and in this he has set us a good example for our imitation. It is no doubt to the blood of Christ alone that we must look for the atonement of our sins; but we are creatures of sense, who must see with our eyes, and handle with our hands; and it is only by improving the outward symbols of propitiation that we can arrive at a full and assured persuasion of it. What we have said of the hyssop applies also to the washings referred to in this verse, and which were commonly practised under the Law. They figuratively represented our being purged from all iniquity, in order to our reception into the divine favour. I need not say that it is the peculiar work of the Holy Spirit to sprinkle our consciences inwardly with the blood of Christ, and, by removing the sense of guilt, to secure our access into the presence of God.[2]

51:7 You directed that hyssop and running water should be used in the ceremony for cleansing a leper (Lev. 14:1–8). Well, Lord, I take the place of a moral leper. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.[3]

51:7 hyssop. Old Testament priests used hyssop, a leafy plant, to sprinkle blood or water on a person being ceremonially cleansed from defilements such as leprosy or touching a dead body (cf. Lv 14:6ff.; Nu 19:16–19). Here hyssop is a figure for David’s longing to be spiritually cleansed from his moral defilement. In forgiveness, God washes away sin (cf. Ps 103:12; Is 1:16; Mic 7:19).[4]

51:7 hyssop. A plant with hairy leaves and branches; bunches of the branches are good for sprinkling. For its use in a cleansing ceremony, cf. Lev. 14:6; Num. 19:6. As with Ps. 51:2 (see note on vv. 1–2), the psalm highlights the inner condition to which the ceremonies point.

51:7 Hyssop alludes to cleansing ceremonies (Lev. 14:4; Num. 19:18) that point forward to the final cleansing from sin through the work of Christ (Heb. 9:19–28).[5]

51:7 hyssop Israelites used hyssop branches to apply the blood of the Passover lamb to their doorposts (see Exod 12:22 and note). They were also used in other purifying rituals (Lev 14:49–53; Num 19:18–19).

I shall be whiter than snow Signifies the complete purity the psalmist wishes for (see Isa 1:18 and note).[6]

51:7 with hyssop. The allusion is to Lev. 14:6, 7, where the cleansing of a leper is described.

wash me. This may be an allusion to Num. 19:19, where instructions are given for ritual washing after contact with a dead person. On the need for washing the heart, see “Legalism” at Matt. 23:4.[7]

51:7 “Hyssop,” a small leafy shrub, was an integral element both in the purification of the leper (cf. Lev. 14:4, note) and also in removing the defilement resulting from contact with a dead body (cf. Num. 19:6). This verse is reflected in Is. 1:18.[8]

December 6 The Emptying of Christ

“[Christ] emptied Himself.”

Philippians 2:7

✧✧✧

Christ renounced His divine privileges.

Although Christ never surrendered His deity, He did empty Himself in certain ways. One such way was to give up His heavenly glory. That’s why in John 17:5 Jesus prays, “Glorify Thou Me together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I ever had with Thee before the world was.” Christ gave up the glory of a face–to–face relationship with God for the muck of this earth. He gave up the adoring presence of angels for the spittle of men.

Christ also emptied Himself of His independent authority. He completely submitted Himself to the will of the Father and learned to be a servant. Philippians 2:8 says He was obedient, and we see that illustrated when He said in the garden, “Not as I will, but as Thou wilt” (Matt. 26:39). He came to do His Father’s will, not His own (John 5:30).

Another way Christ emptied Himself was by setting aside the prerogatives of His deity—the voluntary display of His attributes. He didn’t give up His deity, but He did give up the free exercise of His attributes, limiting Himself to the point of saying that even He did not know the time of His second coming (Matt. 24:36).

Christ also emptied Himself of His personal riches. “Though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich” (2 Cor. 8:9). Christ was poor in this world; He owned very little.

Finally, Christ emptied Himself of a favorable relationship with His Father. God “made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf” (2 Cor. 5:21). As a result our Lord cried out on the cross, “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” (Matt. 27:46).

Though Christ renounced all those privileges, He never ceased to be God. At any moment He could have blasted His enemies off the face of the earth, but He didn’t. He voluntarily emptied Himself for you and me.

✧✧✧

Suggestions for Prayer: Christ submitted Himself completely to His Father’s will. Regularly ask for the Lord’s perfect will to be reflected in your life as well.

For Further Study: Every now and then men glimpsed Christ’s glory. Read Luke 9:28–36 as one example, reminding yourself that Christ emptied Himself of the continuous outward manifestation and personal enjoyment of heavenly glory.[1]

Cruel Taskmaster Disney Only Pays Chinese Workers One Penny For Every $35 Dollar ‘Princess Sing & Sparkle’ Ariel Doll They Produce — Now The End Begins

Ariel sings! She sparkles! And she’s made by Chinese factory workers, mostly women, and paid just 1 penny by Disney for each doll that shimmers off shop shelves.

Unless you support legal Chinese slave labor and exploitative factory sweatshop conditions, you might want to think twice about getting your daughter the Princess Sing & Sparkle Ariel doll from Disney corporation.

Disney World may well be for some the ‘happiest place on earth‘, as their marketing constantly reminds you it is, but there is nothing happy or joyous about how they are ripping off the chinese factory workers who make their products. Do you think these chinese workers deserve more than 85 cents per day? My mother made more than that while working as a cashier back in high school in 1947!

So the next time you go out and buy something from Disney and get all excited, just remember the real cost of that product, and the lives that were destroyed in producing it.

Revealed: Disney’s $35 Ariel doll earns a Chinese worker 1 penny

FROM THE GUARDIAN UK: This Christmas, tens of thousands of children the world over will excitedly tear the wrapping paper off an Ariel doll – Disney’s Little Mermaid – secure in the knowledge that it was made for them by Santa’s happy elves at the north pole.

The reality would come as a cruel surprise. For elves, read Chinese factory workers. For the north pole, read the city of Heyuan. And for happy, read miserable – from illegally long working hours and exhaustion to wages too low to support a family.

An investigation published on Thursday by rights groups Solidar Suisse and China Labor Watch, in partnership with the Guardian, found evidence of excessive and illegal overtime, basic pay rates as low as 85 cents an hour, no holiday or sick pay and high levels of exhaustion among the largely female workforce making toys for Disney, Mattel’s Fisher Price brand and other international toy companies.

Workers reported being fined or dismissed if they took three or more days off sick.

Staff at the Wah Tung factory in the city of Heyuan said that they worked 175 hours of overtime in a month, with only one day off over that period – both breaches of Chinese labour law and toy industry codes of conduct.

The basic wage on the line is 7.5 Chinese yuan (85 cents) – legal, but so low that workers say they feel obliged to work overtime. The investigation, which took place earlier this year, also highlighted a significant gender imbalance, with men outnumbering women nine to one in management roles but women making up 80% of the workforce.

Heyuan is a city of roughly 3 million people in Guangdong province, south-east China. It is home to Wah Tung (Heyuan) Toy Manufacturing Ltd, where about 2,000 workers produce a range of mainly plastic toys and electronics.

This is where Disney makes the Princess Sing & Sparkle Ariel doll that sells for $44.66 USD. Many online stores have sold out of stock and are awaiting a fresh delivery a few days before Christmas.

At the peak of production, in late summer, as many as 2,400 of the dolls were rolling off the Wah Tung production line each day.

The Princess Sing & Sparkle Ariel dollcomes with a mane of deep red hair and a glittery tail that acts like a snow globe. In the last quarter it helped Disney’s consumer products division to an operating income of $337 million on revenue of $1.1 billion USD.

But the investigation found that, when costs were broken down, each of the women on the production line was receiving just 1 cent for every doll produced.

The investigator joined the Sing & Sparkle assembly line for a month during the summer. From her own experience and interviews with fellow workers, she found daily overtime varied between two and five hours and that, with weekends included, overtime would sometimes hit 175 hours a month – nearly five times the legal limit of 36 hours. December 6 Daily Help

WE shall never sing Gloria in excelsis except we pray to God Dc profundis: out of the depths must we cry, or we shall never behold glory in the highest. Prayer should be perfumed with love, saturated with love—love to our fellow-saints, and love to Christ. A man prevails in prayer only as he believes. The Holy Spirit is the author of faith, and strengthens it so that we pray believing God’s promise. Oh that this blessed combination of excellent graces, priceless, and sweet as the spices of the merchant, might be fragrant within us because the Holy Ghost is in our hearts! Most blessed Comforter, exert thy mighty power within us, helping our infirmities in prayer.[1]

I Desire Mercy and Not Sacrifice — Founders Ministries

Jesus says if the Pharisees knew what the title of this post means, then they would not have condemned the guiltless (Matthew 12:7).

A qualification up front: some would use this phrase to look down their nose at a person serious about holiness. “God wants mercy not strict obedience, man. Lighten up.” Jesus is not providing ground for people to break His commands. He’s not tipping his hat to the guy who wants to skip church to go to Disney World on the Lord’s Day singing about mercy triumphing over puritanism.

How do we know Jesus is not doing this sort of thing? Because the Pharisees were condemning the guiltless not the guilty. Jesus and his disciples were not breaking any of God’s commands (but they were kicking over some of the Pharisees’).

Yet, here’s the thing; the guy playing church-hooky at Disney and the finger-pointing Pharisee have the same problem. They’re two peas in a pod. These sworn enemies are actually jiving to the same tune. How? Both are living for themselves. One is walking away from duty; the other is standing on top of duty so as to be seen by more passersby.

Jesus on the other hand desires mercy and not sacrifice. That is, he does a work of mercy as the disciples plucked and ate grain on the Sabbath. That’s what the Sabbath is for… the good of man (Mark 2:27). Doing good is very much lawful on the Sabbath. This point flew over the head of the Pharisees, not because they were too strict about loving God and others, but because they boasted in their offerings to God.

The application then is not, “Oh, now I can relax the law of God and do what feels good to me and others.” That’s the way to be called least in the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:19). Instead, we are to ensure that our lives are lived out of love to God and love to man. We must not only perform the ritual, we must perform the ritual in love and mercy. We must not only go through the motions (there is nothing wrong with the motions), we must ensure there is mercy and compassion within giving life to the motions.

This is a high calling, indeed. Yet we need not fret. Jesus is our bread. He has fed us and will go on feeding us with more mercy which we can then give toward others. And he will feed us with this mercy… even on the Sabbath.

It’s Official: Now There Is Proof Corrupt and Fired Former FBI Director James Comey Lied to the FISA Court to Spy on Candidate Trump — The Gateway Pundit

Yesterday it was reported that a long email chain was uncovered that provides evidence that former FBI Head James Comey and others in his inner circle signed and sent a FISA warrant application to the FISA Court and that they knew the FISA warrant was fraudulent.

Since the emails are labeled classified by the Deep State DOJ and FBI, Comey wanted to have his testimony in front of Congress this week in the open so he wouldn’t have to discuss his criminal actions like this one.

Yesterday, John Solomon from the Hill reported that a long email chain was uncovered that the Republican House members added to the list of documents they would like President Trump to un-classify and release to the American public.

As reported by TGP’s Cristina Laila –

Former FBI Director James Comey is reportedly in this long email chain which is dated October of 2016 – just before the FBI obtained its first FISA warrant on Trump campaign advisor Carter Page.

“If these documents are released, the American public will have clear and convincing evidence to see the FISA warrant that escalated the Russia probe just before Election Day was flawed and the judges (were) misled,” one knowledgeable source told John Solomon.

  1. The FBI acknowledged in the emails there were intelligence community concerns about the Steele dossier before they secured a FISA warrant.
  2. The FBI knew Steele was talking to the media before they obtained a FISA warrant.

This is significant because the FBI has maintained for the last two years that they fired Christopher Steele after they obtained the FISA warrant after finding out he violated FBI protocol by speaking to the media.

The FBI used Michael Isikoff’s Yahoo News article as a source to corroborate the Steele dossier when presenting evidence to the FISC. If they knew Steele was Isikoff’s source, the FBI is guilty of circular intelligence reporting which of course is against protocol. They presented the two sources as independent which means they defrauded the FISC.

When Comey signed off on the FISA warrant request to the FISA Court to obtain a legal basis to spy on Carter Page and President Trump he lied.

This is now a fact because the FISA request had the following caption about Steele’s work in it – “the FBI is unaware of any derogatory information pertaining to Source #1 [Steele].”

We also know from the work of Judicial Watch that no hearings were held on the fraudulent FISA warrant applications sent to the FISA Court by Obama’s corrupt FBI and DOJ leadership team to spy on candidate and then President Trump.

No wonder President Trump called Comey the “WORST FBI Director in history”.

Although history may rate Robert Mueller the worst FBI Director in history, Comey is certainly a close second and should be in jail.  Nothing Comey says should be considered the truth.

It is Impossible to Remove Christ from Christmas — David Fiorazo

Lovers of the Grinch and Ebenezer Scrooge want to snuff out Christmas for the majority of Americans. Sure, you’re allowed to sing about Rudolf and Frosty, you can make it all about Santa and presents, jingle some bells or roast chestnuts by an open fire, but don’t you dare mention Jesus Christ and the real meaning of Christmas!

It should be the most wonderful time of the year, but it’s also the season that atheists and activists feverishly push the agenda to blot out God.

Their hearts are so hardened, they not only refuse to believe in Jesus and Christmas, but since misery loves company, they don’t want anyone else to believe it either! They don’t mind the commercialism and greed around the holiday; they just insist you to say ‘happy holidays’ instead of Merry Christmas.

This joyful season began because God so loved the world, but they want to censor the celebration and eradicate Christ from Christmas. But is that even possible?

You cannot divorce the true, historical event of the Child born in Bethlehem from the God of creation and the reason we celebrate Christmas. But that doesn’t mean the atheists and God-haters won’t try.

After all, they were successful removing Christianity from public schools so they figure, why not ban Christmas as well?

More news stories are on the way, I’m sure. But here are a few to consider.

  • A middle school in Virginia recently decided not to allow any holiday songs that mention the name of Jesus.
  • In Newaygo, Michigan, secularists demand the elementary school removethree wise men displayed on the top of the school building.
  • A principal at a Nebraska school has banned Christmas carols, the colors red and green, candy canes, and Jesus.

This next one may be hard to believe,

  • Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer is being called “seriously problematic” for bullying, racism, sexism, and homophobia.
  • Just one more: the Huffington Post and other far-left outlets are telling people that saying “Merry Christmas” excludes people, so teach children to say “Happy Holidays” instead. I agree with Paul Bois at the Daily Wire who says it’s hypocritical for business owners and managers to decorate their stores or websites in red, green and all the rest, play Christmas music and then say “Happy Holidays.” He adds:

Christmas is the national holiday; the reason for the season. The ornaments, the lights, the music, the food, the shopping even, all reflect that; …If it looks like Christmas, smells like Christmas, sounds like Christmas, then just say Christmas.

But the annual war on Christmas is here, like it or not, and we need to decide how to respond.

First, remember that these people are lost and are far from God. They hate Christmas and often Christians as well, and need our patience and prayers because they have no real hope or peace. They’ve not yet experienced the love God has for them if they’d just turn to Him and confess their sins. That’s why Jesus was born – “the Word became flesh…(John 1:14)” and preached, “Repent! The kingdom of God is at hand (Matthew 3:2).”

Second, make no mistake: this is a war on Jesus Christ. Those who are trying to blot out reminders of God by removing Christmas traditions like manger scenes and joy filled greetings simply don’t want to answer to the One who Scripture refers to as “Mighty God.”

The prophet Isaiah wrote about Jesus nearly 700 years before He was born:

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

Apart from Jesus Christ, there is no lasting peace in this world. Know Jesus, know peace. What did Isaiah mean by referring to Him as Everlasting Father? Jesus is Lord and eternal, along with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. There was never a time when Jesus did not exist. He continues from generation to generation, and His kingdom will never end.

The meaning of Christmas is based on true, actual events including angels appearing to shepherds (Luke 2) and a baby born at just the right time in history in order to redeem mankind (Galatians 4:4). Wishing someone a Merry Christmas is saying we desire for them to know the love, joy, and forgiveness of God as we do.

President of the Family Research Council, Tony Perkins said:

Why is something as simple as saying “Merry Christmas” so important? It reminds a hurting world of the greatest gift we can receive in Jesus Christ, and it symbolizes the freedom to celebrate that gift.

Don’t just remember the reason for the season; that Christ was born to save mankind by His sacrifice on the cross. Share the good news of salvation and let your light shine by loving others and wishing them a heartfelt, “Merry Christmas!” And make sure to have one yourself!

It is Impossible to Remove Christ from Christmas — David Fiorazo

December 6 The Heir of All Things

“In these last days [God] has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things” (Heb. 1:2).

✧✧✧

Since Jesus is the Son of God, He is the heir of all that God possesses.

When Christ first came to earth He became poor for our sakes, that we, through His poverty, might be made rich (2 Cor. 8:9). He had nothing for Himself; He had “nowhere to lay His head” (Luke 9:58). Even His clothes were taken from Him when He died, and He was buried in a tomb that belonged to someone else.

It is beyond human understanding to imagine that the Galilean carpenter who was crucified like a common criminal, naked and bleeding on a cross outside the city of Jerusalem, is the King of kings and Lord of lords. But He is!

As the Son of God, Jesus is the heir of all that God possesses. The Apostle Paul explains that all things not only were created by Christ but also for Him (Col. 1:16). Everything that exists will find its true meaning only when it comes under the final control of Christ.

The book of Psalms predicted that Christ would one day be the heir to all that God possesses. The Father, speaking to the Son, says, “Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Thine inheritance, and the very ends of the earth as Thy possession” (Ps. 2:8). God also declared, “I also shall make Him My first-born, the highest of the kings of the earth” (Ps. 89:27; cf. Col. 1:15). “First-born” refers to legal rights—especially those of inheritance and authority.

When Christ comes to earth again, He will completely and eternally inherit all things (Rev. 11:15). And because we have trusted in Him, we are to be “fellow-heirs with Christ” (Rom. 8:16–17). When we enter into His eternal Kingdom, we will jointly possess all that He possesses. We will not be joint Christs or joint Lords, but we will be joint-heirs. His marvelous inheritance will be ours as well.

✧✧✧

Suggestions for Prayer:  Thank God for making you a joint-heir with Christ. Thank your Lord for allowing that to happen through His death on the cross.

For Further Study: Read Revelation 5:1–14 and 11:15–18, noting how the inhabitants of Heaven respond to Christ.[1]

John MacArthur isn’t dispensationalist, YOU’RE dispensationalist! Reaction to Shapiro/MacArthur interview pt 2

The End Time

By Elizabeth Prata

I wrote yesterday that I had enjoyed the hour long interview conservative talk podcaster Ben Shapiro had conducted with pastor-teacher John MacArthur this past Sunday. I had never listened to Shapiro before (confession: I don’t really enjoy podcasts of any kind) but I tuned in because MacArthur is wise and always worth listening to. It was also exciting because many people listen to Shapiro who are likely not saved (as Shapiro himself isn’t) and we always get excited when the Gospel is presented to people, and on Sunday it certainly was.

I enjoyed that Shapiro asked a question and did not interrupt the answer. Also I liked that it was just the two of them, not a panel, so there was with nobody else butting in or chomping at the bit to butt in. The topics covered were wide ranging, but centered squarely on Jesus and theology.

December 6, 2018 Morning Verse Of The Day

13–14 Herbert (in loc.) suggests that the association of “Sabbath” with denying oneself in Leviticus 16:31 [NIV mg. says “must fast”) may account for the inclusion of these verses in this chapter. There is no need, however, for us to detach them from the rest of it. Moreover, as Ralph Alexander has pointed out (in a personal communication), the Sabbath here may represent the entire Mosaic covenant and the blessings to be enjoyed in following it (see comment on 56:3–8). Kidner’s fine comment (in loc.) is worth quoting fully:

Lest it should seem that philanthropy is all, these verses describe the strictness and the gladness of the sabbath-keeping God desires. If fasting is to be an opportunity to show love to our neighbour, the sabbath should express first of all our love of God (though both the foregoing passage and the sabbath practice of Jesus insist that it must overflow to man). It will mean self-forgetfulness (v. 13a) and the self-discipline of rising above the trivial (v. 13b). But to people of this spirit God can safely give great things (v. 14).[1]

  1. If thou shalt turn away thy foot from the sabbath. Some think that the Prophet alludes to the external observation of the Sabbath, because it was not lawful to perform a journey on that day. (Ex. 20:8.) Though I do not reject that opinion, yet I think that the meaning is far more extensive; for by a figure of speech, in which a part is taken for the whole, he denotes the whole course of human life; as it is very customary to employ the word “going” or “walking” to denote our life. He says, therefore, “If thou cease to advance in thy course, if thou shut up thy path, walk not according to thine own will,” &c. For this is to “turn away the foot from the Sabbath,” when we lay ourselves under the necessity of wandering freely and without restraint in our own sinful desires. As he formerly included under the class of fasting all ceremonies and outward masks, in which they made their holiness to consist, and shewed that they were vain and unprofitable; so in this passage he points out the true observation of the Sabbath, that they may not think that it consists in external idleness but in true self-denial, so as to abstain from every act of injustice and wickedness, and from all lusts and wicked thoughts. First, by the word “foot” he denotes actions; because the Jews, though they did not venture to perform a journey, or to cook flesh on a Sabbath-day, yet did not scruple to harass their neighbours and to mock at the afflicted. Yet he immediately passes on to the will and to speeches, so as to include every part of the obedience which we owe to God.

And shalt call the Sabbath a delight. This word, “delight,” must be viewed as referring to God, and not to men; because nothing can be more pleasing or acceptable to God, than the observation of the Sabbath, and sincere worship. He carefully inculcates this, that men do wrong, if, laying aside the commandments of God, they esteem highly those things which are of no value; and he warns them that they ought to form their judgment from his will alone. Certain classes of duties are again enumerated by him, by which he shews clearly that the true observation of the Sabbath consists in self-denial and thorough conversion. And thus he pronounces the foundation to be the will, from which proceed speeches, and next actions; for we speak what we have conceived in our heart, and by speech we make known our will, and afterwards carry it into effect. Whoever then wishes to serve God in a proper manner, must altogether renounce his flesh and his will. And hence we see the reason why God so highly recommends, in the whole Scripture, the observation of the Sabbath; for he contemplated something higher than the outward ceremony, that is, indolence and repose, in which the Jews thought that the greatest holiness consisted. On the contrary, he commanded the Jews to renounce the desires of the flesh, to give up their sinful inclinations, and to yield obedience to him; as no man can meditate on the heavenly life, unless he be dead to the world and to himself. Now, although that ceremony has been abolished, nevertheless the truth remains; because Christ died and rose again, so that we have a continual sabbath; that is, we are released from our works, that the Spirit of God may work mightily in us.

  1. Then wilt thou delight in Jehovah. He appears to allude to the word delight in the preceding verse; for the verb תתענג, (tĭthgnănnēg,) which the Prophet employs, is derived from the same root as ענג, (gnōnĕg,) which he formerly used, when he said that the Lord takes the highest delight in the true observation of the Sabbath. In a word, he means that the people take no delight in God, because they provoke him, and do not obey his will; for if we framed our life in obedience to God, we should be his delight, and, on the other hand, he would be our delight. Thus he affirms that it is owing entirely to the Jews themselves that they do not, by relying on a reconciled God, lead a cheerful and joyful life. By these words he indirectly reproaches them with bringing upon themselves, by their own fault, many calamities.

And I will cause thee to ride on the high places of the earth. By these words he promises a return to their native country, and a safe habitation in it. We know that Judea was situated on a lofty place above the neighbouring countries; while the situation of Babylon was much lower, so that the people trembled as if they had been shut up in a cave. He next tells more plainly what he meant by the word ride; for he promises the possession of that country which had been promised and given to the fathers,2 and which they at that time enjoyed, and of which they were afterwards deprived for a time.

For the mouth of Jehovah hath spoken it. He added this, that they might know, beyond all controversy, that all these things were true; and this must be viewed as referring not only to those promises, but likewise to the beginning of the chapter. For he rebuked hypocrites, who thought that they were defending themselves in a just cause, and shewed that they were suffering the just punishment of their sins; and that it was in vain to contend with God, and to bring forward in opposition to him their own works, which were altogether empty and worthless. On that account he brings them back to the true observation of the Sabbath, and shews that it will be well with them, if they shall worship God in a right manner. At length he concludes that they have not to deal with a mortal man, but that he who pronounces these things is God the Judge.[2]

58:13–14. The second way Israel practiced hypocrisy was in Sabbath observance. The Sabbath was not acceptable as long as the people observed it in a self-serving way and maintained oppressive labor practices. God called Israel to turn from hypocritical Sabbath practices to those that honor the Sabbath as a holy day resulting in enjoyment of God. Rather than legalistic Sabbath observance, true faith would bring God’s messianic blessing—then Israel would truly honor the Sabbath. At that time God would provide for the nation. The phrase ride on the heights of the earth (v. 14) is an allusion to Dt 32:13 and refers to the provision of food. God will also feed them with the heritage of Jacob indicates that the land promised to Jacob will provide all the food the nation will need.[3]

13–14 But lest it should seem that philanthropy is all, these verses describe the strictness and the gladness of the Sabbath-keeping God desires. If fasting is to be an opportunity to show love to our neighbour, the Sabbath should express, first of all, our love of God (though both the foregoing passage and the Sabbath practice of Jesus insist that it must overflow to man). It will mean self-forgetfulness (13a) and the self-discipline of rising above the trivial (13b). But to people of this spirit God can safely give great things (14).[4]

58:13–14. Sabbath observance was a barometer of one’s faithfulness to the Mosaic Covenant (cf. comments on 56:4–6). By following the rules for the Sabbath a person acknowledged the importance of worshiping God and showed that he depended on God to bless him materially for that time he took off from work. By putting God first and not seeking to do as he wished, a person would have joy, not only in spiritual salvation (ride on the heights) but also in prosperity (feast on the inheritance). All this was certain because the Lord has spoken (cf. 1:20; 40:5).[5]

58:13, 14 If God’s people respect the Sabbath by abstaining from business or selfish pleasure, if they consider it a delight to honor God’s holy day, then they will delight … in the Lord who gave the day, and He will give them a place of leadership in the earth and the heritage that God promised to Jacob. Nothing can hinder this because the mouth of the Lord has spoken.[6]

58:13 Doing your pleasure probably refers to commerce (vv. 3, 4; Amos 8:5). Holy day clearly indicates that in vv. 2–9 the Lord was not rejecting ritual altogether (66:23).

58:14 This blessing is based on the Song of Moses in Deut. 32:9, 13.[7]

58:13 turn your foot … the sabbath. The Sabbath was holy ground on which no one should walk. Keeping the Sabbath was symbolic of obedience to all the law of Moses (56:2). For the setting aside of Sabbath law in the NT, see notes on Ro 14:5, 6 and Col 2:16, 17.

58:14 take delight in the Lord. Repentant people walking in fellowship with the Lord experience satisfaction of soul (Ps 37:4). Their satisfaction will not come from material goods (contra. 55:2).[8]

58:13 you hold your foot back from the Sabbath, from The people were accustomed to going about their own business on the Sabbath, essentially trampling over the sanctity of the day (see Isa 56:2).

Nehemiah observes the people openly profaning the Sabbath and literally trampling the day by treading the winepresses and engaging in other agricultural work (Neh 13:15–21).

58:14 I will make you ride upon the heights of the earth Alludes to the miraculous provision of exodus, using the same poetic image as Deut 32:12–13.

At President Bush’s Funeral, Michael W. Smith Honors His ‘Friend Forever’| Christianity Today

The CCM pioneer used to talk faith with George H. W. Bush and Billy Graham. This year, he performed at both of their memorial services.

Michael W. Smith’s hit song “Friends” has been sung thousands of times over the decades, but never quite like today’s performance at the funeral service for President George H. W. Bush at the National Cathedral in Washington.

Not only was Smith backed by a full orchestra and a 150-person choir, but he also sung it as a personal farewell to the leader who, to his surprise, became his longtime friend and fan. Bush died on Friday at age 94.

“First and foremost, I hope the song is very honoring of the president because he loved the song,” Smith said in an interview with CT. “The last time I saw him, when we said goodbye, he gave me a hug, pointed his finger in the air, and with a twinkle in his eye, said, ‘Friends are friends forever.’”

The contemporary Christian music (CCM) chart-topper first played for President Bush in the White House after a Christmas special in 1989. They struck up a friendship that led to regular visits to the late president’s home in Kennebunkport, Maine; relationships with the rest of the Bush family; and even travel together.

“He’s just been an inspiration to me,” the three-time Grammy winner said. “We didn’t talk about politics much. But we did have a lot of conversations about God and faith.”

“One thing that tied us together was his relationship with Billy Graham. There were times we would get Billy Graham on the phone and talk,” Smith said, remembering them standing on the deck conversing with the late evangelist, whose memorial service and funeral the singer performed atearlier this year.

Bush requested “Friends,” his favorite song of Smith’s, for his funeral. Smith sang an arrangement with the Armed Forces Chorus, the National Cathedral Choir, and the United States Marine Orchestra.

Smith described the 41st president—a lifelong Episcopalian—as a humble leader and a man of deep faith: “He was so kind. He was gentle. He was for the underdog. If he did something great, he never bragged about it.”

The singer-songwriter also became close with Bush’s sons George W. and Jeb, before either had set their sights on running for governor or president. The first time Smith met George W. Bush, Smith beat him and the senior Bush in a doubles tennis match. “I thought, ‘I’ll never be back,’” he said.

But Smith went on to sing during a White House prayer service for George W. Bush’s presidential inauguration in 2001—the first time he ever performed “Above All”—and for Jeb’s inauguration as governor of Florida. (The younger President Bush calls him the real dubya.”)
