March 26 Standing in the Storm

Scripture Reading: Psalm 62:1–12

Key Verse: Psalm 62:1

Truly my soul silently waits for God;

From Him comes my salvation.

Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved” (Psalm 62:1–2).

This moving passage can bring to mind many images, but a favorite may be a photograph of a tiny bird wedged into a small crevasse within a rocky cliff. Just outside his hiding place, a brutal storm rages. Strong winds and rain beat down, upturning leaves and breaking tree branches. Yet the bird is safe and still and his life is spared, thanks to the solid rock around him.

Can you recall a time in your life when it seemed as if you would be blown away by a physical or emotional storm? Think back to what you did in response to this trial. Did you venture out into its midst or retreat into the shelter of God’s protective arms?

When the next storm blows into your life, remember the words of Psalm 62. Give special attention to the phrase, “my soul silently waits for God.” In the photograph mentioned above, the bird was not chirping and fretting. Instead he was resting quietly until the storm passed. His confidence was in the source of his protection, and he did not need to panic.

Though God always hears our cries of distress, we can be assured that once we call for Him, He will be with us. We can release our anxieties and rest in Him until the storms die down and we emerge once again victorious from our hiding place.

Lord, as the birds calmly seek shelter to wait out the storm, let me also be quick to seek shelter in You when life buffets me about.[1]

The Irrelevance of Hell — Christian Blogs – Delivered By Grace

In our postmodern culture that plays by the tolerance rules of modern times, we have been taught to be “nice” and to pursue happiness at all costs. After all, if we can’t say anything nice, we shouldn’t say anything at all. For the majority of people within our urbane culture, hell is the sort of topic that is not discussed in the local coffee shop nor is it the center of attention in most Sunday sermons. Let’s face it—hell is not relevant to a sophisticated culture. But, why has hell become irrelevant?

Our Culture Loves Itself To Death

It is not excuse that our culture is filled with self-love. We enjoy making much of our amusements and entertainment is almost viewed as a basic human right in our culture. We have trivia shows, all sorts of game shows, and even shows that spotlight other people’s funny videos designed to keep us laughing. Neil Postman, in his classic work, Amusing Ourselves To Death, observes the following:

Everything in our background has prepared us to know and resist a prison when the gates begin to close around us . . . But what if there are no cries of anguish to be heard? Who is prepared to take arms against a sea of amusements? To whom do we complain, and when, and in what tone of voice, when serious discourse dissolves into giggles? What is the antidote to a culture’s being drained by laughter? [1]

Just fifty years ago, funeral directors anticipated lengthy mourning periods for family gatherings at the funeral home. Today, the typical funeral is over from start to finish within a couple of hours. Historically speaking, after the death of a loved one, families would mourn for days or weeks, but today’s culture is quick to acknowledge the death—but families are quick to jump right back into the typical fast-paced ruts of life immediately afterwards. Nothing can stop entertainment—not even death!

Within a culture of entertainment, not very much is going to be said about hell. In fact, even when people die were not religious and didn’t have a life committed to Christ—it’s common to hear their close friends and family reassuring everyone that their loved one is in a better place now. Heaven is real, but hell has been relegated to a mythological land fit for the story books. The culture that loves entertainment hates hell and such a culture supports the idea of universalism—where everyone dies and goes to the great Disney World in the sky. For that reason, hell has become irrelevant within our entertainment saturated culture.

Preachers Fear Man

The trap of many ministers is the fear of man. We live in an age of success where pastors have been relegated to the position of campaign manager or evangelical fundraiser for the success of ministries and expansion projects for the church campus. Therefore, sermons filled with the intense heat of a literal hell don’t exactly fit the profile of a man who is looking to raise funds for ministry incentives. Ministers who approach the pulpit with that mindset will likely avoid sequential expository preaching which would force them to deal with the doctrine of hell. For that reason, hell is irrelevant in most local church ministries.

When most ministers are hired by a congregation, they’re often asked something about a vision for their church. The expectation is that the minister will lead the church to golden years of growth and success, so for a minister to say anything in the pulpit that doesn’t make people happy or that may lead prospective members out the door dissatisfied is often avoided like the plague. Just a quick consideration of the Bible’s language on hell is not exactly fitting with the typical sermon series on happiness.

Consider the terms used in Scripture to describe the place of hell:

  • Matthew 5:22 – “hell fire”
  • Matthew 8:12 – “outer darkness” and “weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
  • Matthew 22:13 – “outer darkness” and “weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
  • Luke 13:28 – “weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
  • Mark 9:44-48 – Three times the Bible mentions “worm dies not” and “fire is not quenched.”
  • Mark 9:47 – “hell fire”
  • Revelation 20:14 – “lake of fire”

Beyond specific references to hell, the Bible likewise uses other references in a more indirect manner to describe the judgment of God upon sinners.  Such references include:

The great question for preachers to consider is whether they fear man or God? Will the minister of the Word actually minister the Word to the congregation—including the whole counsel of God’s Word? Joel Beeke observes:

Modern pastors who do not preach on hell may fear the consequences of preaching on such an offensive topic on a Sunday morning. Vocal critics might fault a minister for being too negative. Visitors shopping for a church might find the topic a colossal turn-off. Regardless, God has called us to declare “all the counsel of God” (Acts 20:27) concerning the way of salvation. [2]

The greatest example for modern preachers is none other than Jesus Christ in his earthly ministry. He declared more about hell than he did about heaven, and yet who among us holds the position that he wasn’t filled with love for the people? The pastor who loves the people will indeed warn the people of a real hell and point them to a real Savior—Christ the Lord.

One-Dimensional View of God

A common mistake when thinking of God is to manufacture a god of your own imagination and call it “God” when in reality your idea of God is not in line with his self-revelation in Holy Scripture. This is the way culture seeks to define God. Sadly, it’s the way many Sunday school classes and Sunday sermons define God as well.

It’s not uncommon to hear people talk about the God of the Old Testament in radical contrast to the God of the New Testament. It was a famous skeptic in history, Bertrand Russell, who wrote in his book Why I’m Not a Christian that Jesus’s teaching on hell is “the one profound defect in Christ’s character.” The one-dimensional view of God is one that tragically separates the love of God from the wrath of God or even views God’s wrath as a defect. We must not forget that Jesus not only preached on hell, but Jesus created hell. In like manner, Jesus was not absent and disconnected when hell was raining down from heaven upon Sodom and Gomorrah.

Hell is irrelevant to a people who focus merely upon the “God of love” and see him as the New Testament meek and mild God of acceptance. Not only is that a gross misrepresentation of God, it’s a tragic neglect of God’s character to suggest that we must separate hell from the God who is love. In fact, God loves his holiness so much that he created hell. The love of God for sinners is demonstrated in a hellish assault upon his own Son on the cross in order to satisfy the holy demands of the law and to pay for our sin (Rom. 5:8; 8:1-4; 1 Peter 2:24; Is. 53:10).

Our religion becomes irrelevant as we seek to make hell irrelevant. Such an attempt undermines the gravity of our sin and the holiness of God.

March 26 Unconditional Love

Scripture Reading: 1 John 4:7–11

Key Verse: 1 John 4:7

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.

God’s love for you stands unmatched by anything this world has to offer. Only His love can

  • calm the restlessness of your soul.
  • heal any hatred you have experienced.
  • change worry and doubt to hope and security.
  • resolve the anger and bitterness that come from disappointment.
  • give you a sense of purpose, self-worth, and hope.

God never grows tired of you. He sees the span of your life. His eye is on the potential that your life holds.

He spends each moment completely absorbed in thoughts of you—developing you, molding you, and blessing you.

So often we miss His blessings because we worry about what we should or should not do. Questions fill our minds: Did I do it right? Is God pleased with me?

God loves you, and His love will never change. He has a plan for your life, and you will succeed. The key is to remain focused on Him and not on who you think you should be.

Don’t waste time comparing yourself to others. Many who are single wonder why God has not answered their prayers for a husband or wife. He has. He has given you Himself, and in His timing He will satisfy the longing of your heart in the way that is best for you.

Dear Lord, calm my restless soul. Heal my hurt, and resolve my anger and bitterness. Replace my worries and doubts with hope and security. Give me new purpose for living.[1]

President Trump Delivers Pointed Remarks About Mueller Report and Obama’s Involvement During Senate Luncheon (Video and Transcript)… — The Last Refuge

Whooo doggies….  President Trump attended a working policy luncheon today with Senate Republicans.  Making brief remarks to the media, President Trump answered questions about the Mueller report and the manufactured false Russian narrative.

While avoiding the specifics, President Trump directly inferred the involvement of former President Obama.  [Video and Transcript below]

.

[Transcript] 1:05 P.M. EDT – Q Some Democrats, sir, are still talking about impeachment. What’s your response to that?

THE PRESIDENT: I don’t think they’re talking about impeachment. We have the greatest economy we’ve ever had. Our country is in incredible shape. They and others created a fraud on our country with this ridiculous witch hunt, where it was proven, very strongly, no collusion, no obstruction. No nothing.

We are doing so well. We’ve never probably had a time of prosperity like this. It’s been great.

Q Mr. President, you’re accusing the people who launched the investigation into your campaign of treasonous acts.

THE PRESIDENT: Yeah.

Q How high up do you think it went?

THE PRESIDENT: I think it went very high up. I think what happened is a disgrace. I don’t believe our country should allow this ever to happen again. This will never happen again. We cannot let it ever happen again. It went very high up, and it started fairly low, but with instructions from the high up. This should never happen to a President again. We can’t allow that to take place.

Q Mr. President, do you think it reached the West Wing of the Obama White House?

THE PRESIDENT: I don’t want to say that, but I think you know the answer.

Q Mr. President, the report says that while you did not commit a crime —

THE PRESIDENT: Who said what?

Q The Mueller report says — according to the Barr letter — while you —

THE PRESIDENT: The Mueller report was great. It could not have been better. It said, “No obstruction. No collusion.” It could not have been better.

Q On healthcare — on healthcare: Your administration is making very clear that you think the Affordable Care Act is invalid and should be struck down. What is your message to Americans who may be concerned about their healthcare?

THE PRESIDENT: Let me tell you exactly what my message is: The Republican Party will soon be known as the Party of Healthcare. You watch.

TOM FITTON: Yes, Judicial Watch Will Investigate Jussie Smollett Scandal — The Gateway Pundit

Tom Fitton reassured Americans on Tuesday that Judicial Watch will be investigating the Jussie Smollett scandal after crooked Chicago prosecutors dropped all 16 charges against the hate crime hoaxer in a stunning display of lawlessness.

“Yes, Judicial Watch will investigate Smollett scandal,” Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton said in a tweet Tuesday.

Chicago police are furious over Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s decision to drop all charges against Jussie Smollett.

There are plenty of documents that Judicial Watch can obtain through FOIA lawsuits.

Smollett reached a deferred prosecution deal and the judge sealed his case.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson said in a presser on Tuesday that prosecutors brokered a deal in secret to circumvent the judicial system.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx was communicating with Tina Tchen, a former aide to Barack and Michelle Obama about Jussie Smollett’s case shortly after the ‘Empire’ actor staged the hate hoax crime.

Tina Tchen sent Kim Foxx an email on February 1st saying, “Hi Kim – I sent an email to your work address I think as well. I wanted to give you a call on behalf of Jussie Smollett and family who I know. They have concerns about the investigation. I am on an 8 am flight to nyc but please call me before then. I land about 1015 Chicago time. My cell is [redacted]. Many thanks!”

In one text exchange with a Smollett relative (name is redacted), Kim Foxx is reassuring the individual that she spoke to the superintendent and asked for a favor.

The individual reached out to Foxx on February 1st and said, “Hi Kim, this is [redacted] Are you available to chat? Tina Tchen gave me your number.” Kim Foxx engaged in a back and forth text exchange with the individual about Smollett’s case. “I’ll keep you posted, “Foxx said in a text. “Omg this would be a huge victory,” the Smollett relative said in response. “I make no guarantees, but I’m trying.” Foxx replied.

Kim Foxx later recused herself from the case.

The Police Union wants federal investigators to determine whether Kim Foxx broke the law.

Once again, Judicial Watch is on the front lines pursuing the truth — you can support Tom Fitton and his team by clicking here.

Mueller report post mortem: Clinton needed scapegoats to explain 2016 loss – Wikileaks editor to RT

Wikileaks became the target of baseless conjecture as part of Hillary Clinton’s attempt to explain her “humiliating” loss in 2016, the organization’s editor-in-chief told RT, following the anti-climactic end of the Mueller probe.

Jeanine Pirro Return in Doubt as Silent Fox News Hides Full Weekly Schedule — The Gateway Pundit

The Fox  News Channel is hiding its full weekly schedule from view as it appears that the likelihood of Judge Jeanine Pirro returning to her FNC show, Justice with Judge Jeanine that airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET, is diminishing following a two week absence over her remarks about Muslim Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) on her March 9 show.

Pirro spoke about Omar’s anti-semitism and asked whether Omar’s adherence to Islam’s sharia law–as evinced by her wearing a hijab–conflicted with her oath to the Constitution. The following day Fox released a statement denouncing Pirro’s remarks. Pirro issued a simultaneous statement explaining her comments.

Since then, neither Fox nor Pirro have made any public statements on her absence. Unconfirmed single source reports two weekends ago stated FNC had suspended Pirro for two weeks.

The Los Angeles Times reported this past Thursday, without foundation, that Pirro is expected to return this Saturday.

“A representative for Fox News declined comment on why Pirro’s show had been off the air since March 16. But people at the network not authorized to comment say the fiery conservative host has been suspended for remarks she made about Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on her March 9 program. Pirro is expected to return March 30.”

The two weeks are up and there is no sign Pirro is returning to her show Saturday night. Pirro has not tweeted since March 10. The lack of a statement by FNC in support of Pirro or indicating a return date is telling. As of Tuesday, Pirro’s show is still listed on the FNC roster but has not been updated since she was taken off the air.

Multiple attempts to view the Monday thought Sunday weekly scheduled posted by FNC via smartphone showed a redirect to a two-day schedule showing only the current and following days’ schedule.

Initial return:

After redirect:

Attempts via computer to use a direct link to Saturday’s schedule returned either a blank full week schedule or the current two day schedule. Other attempts to use the link to the full schedule also returned a blank full week schedule.

The FNC schedule usually displays the date with the day and allows clicking on the day/date box to reveal a drop down schedule for that day. The smartphone image captured a new version that automatically displays the current and following days’ schedule.

The computer image shows no dates with the days and no drop down boxes available. The normal FNC schedule from last weekend when Pirro’s show was cancelled for the second week in a row was captured by TGP:

Video and relevant transcript of Pirro’s statement about Omar.

Transcript of Pirro’s remarks that got her in trouble with Fox shows she was addressing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) about the growing anti-Semitism within the Democratic Party.

Your party is not anti-Israel, she is. Think about this. She’s not getting this anti-Israel sentiment doctrine from the Democrat Party. So if it’s not rooted in the party, where is she getting it from? Think about it.

Omar wears a hijab, which, according to the Quran 33:59, tells women to cover so they won’t get molested. Is her adherence to this Islamic doctrine indicative of her adherence to Sharia law, which in itself is antithetical to the United States Constitution?”

I don’t have to tell you, Nancy, Jews have been persecuted almost from the beginning of time, when they were forced out of Egypt, to the six million killed in the Holocaust. And now we are witnessing the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe where incidents are up seventy-four percent in the last year alone in France. Where Jewish cemeteries are regularly desecrated with swastikas and people relay the common tropes of Jews with too much money and influence.

We all know how it starts. It starts that way. Hate is hate. Hate leads to violence and violence leads to retaliation. Which then leads to unrest and worse.

Yes, Nancy, it’s all about hating Israel to promote the cause of Palestine. President Trump was right when he said the Democrat Party is now the anti-Israel party. And don’t forget, Nancy, history has proven over an over when you appease anti-Semitic sentiment, the worst happens.

And in your case, Nancy, the danger for you is that your appeasing this behavior will lead to your removal as Speaker and the Democrats, now controlled by socialists and anti-Semites, will lose the presidency in 2020.”

Charges May Have Been Dropped, But Jussie Smollett Is Still Guilty — Faithwire

The charges against embattled actor Jussie Smollett may have been dropped, but he’s still guilty.

For those who haven’t been keeping up with the Smollett saga, the “Empire” star was charged one month ago by a grand jury with 16 counts of felony misconduct after it was revealed he staged a racist, homophobic attack against himself in order to advance a moral narrative about social justice and to propel his own career.

Progressives Would Rather Stand With Jussie Smollett Post-Hoax Than Admit Their Ideology Is Flawed

https://www.faithwire.com/2019/03/05/progressives-would-rather-stand-with-jussie-smollett-post-hoax-than-admit-their-ideology-is-flawed/embed/#?secret=y1Bfbl5XxB

Smollett falsely claimed he was attacked by two masked men wearing “Make America Great Again” hats — a symbol of support for President Donald Trump — on Jan. 29 at the entrance of the Loews Hotel in Chicago. He said at the time the unidentified individuals slipped a noose around his neck and yelled racist and homophobic slurs in his direction.

It was later revealed the two men arrested for the attack, Olabinjo Osundairo and Abimbola Osundairo, were connected to Smollett. Police believe the actor paid the brothers $3,500 to fake the attack.

On Tuesday, the judge handling Smollett’s case granted a nolle pros, which essentially means the case has been dropped and that the celebrity will no longer face prosecution for his alleged crimes, according to Fox News.

Smollett, claiming to be a man of faith, responded to the judge’s decision by standing by his claim that he is innocent of the charges brought against him in February:

I am a man of faith and I’m a man that has knowledge of my history and I would not bring my family, our lives, or the movement into a fire like this. I just wouldn’t. Now I’d like nothing more than to just get back to work and move on with my life. But make no mistake: I will always continue to fight for justice, equality, and betterment of marginalized people everywhere.

This entire ordeal begs the moral question: do the ends justify the means? Clearly, to Smollett — “I will always continue to fight for justice, equality, and betterment of marginalized people everywhere” — they do.

Can one, though, really teach a moral lesson in an immoral way? I’d argue it’s impossible, but by dismissing the case against Smollett, the judge indirectly suggested the opposite.

It should be noted, unlike what Smollett’s legal team is suggesting, the TV star was not exonerated. The charges against him were simply dropped in exchange for his agreement to do community service.

Regardless, Smollett tried to weaponize moral rightness to get his way, and we shouldn’t forget — legal charges or not — he’s guilty and should be held accountable for that.

For the believer — and Smollett claims to be a “man of faith” — there is no loophole; there is no divergent strand in the perfect thread of holiness. We are responsible for all our decisions, good and bad, and their outcomes, good and bad.

The Ten Commandments don’t come with an asterisk and our sanctification as a result Jesus’ finished work on the cross doesn’t come with reservations. There is no way to justify immoral behavior, yet that’s what Smollett and his sympathizers are trying to do.

Jussie Smollett and the Perils of Worshipping at the Altar of Social Justice

https://www.faithwire.com/2019/02/21/jussie-smollett-and-the-perils-of-worshipping-at-the-altar-of-social-justice/embed/#?secret=CTtY3ptKvc

Smollett is a hypocrite; so am I and so are you. The difference here is Smollett got caught before being allowed to get away with it.

I’ll give the the 36-year-old actor the benefit of the doubt and assume he was trying to start a national discussion about how to handle injustice. If that was the case, he nullified his own moral standing — martyring himself for his own selfish gain — to start a conversation about the very morality he eclipsed.

We all do it. We all fall short and we all miss the mark.

The Smollett saga should serve as a cautionary tale to all who have observed it. The ends alone do not justify the means. Only that which is morally right justifies the means we use to accomplish our goals, no matter how righteous they might be.

Each of us is, like Smollett, guilty. But those who are in Christ can rest assured we have been justified and our penalty has been paid.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Furious After Hoaxer Smollett Walks: “How Dare He!… A Whitewash of Justice” (VIDEO) — The Gateway Pundit

Despite the evidence against Jussie Smollett the Cook County State’s Attorney dropped ALL 16 CHARGES against Smollett on Tuesday!

Smollett left the court today and LIED, telling reporters racist, homophobic Trump supporters beat him in a cold Chicago street.

This afternoon even Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel condemned the Cook County Attorney’s decision to release Smollett.
Rahm told reporters this was a “whitewash of justice.”

The Wrap reported:

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel strongly condemned the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office decision to drop all charges against Jussie Smollett, calling it a “whitewash of justice.”

“This is a whitewash of justice,” Emanuel said Tuesday afternoon during a fiery press conference alongside Chicago police superintendent Eddie Johnson. “A grand jury could not have been clearer.” In a stunning reversal, all charges were dropped against Smollett Tuesday morning by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Corrupt As Hell – Chicago Prosecutor Joseph Magat Drops All Charges Against Jussie Smollett…. — The Last Refuge

In a stunning development Cook County Asst. State Attorney Joseph Magat decided to drop all charges against Jussie Smollett for perpetrating a hate hoax crime.

All of the investigative evidence is solid; all of the evidence that proves Jussie Smollett did perpetrate the hoax is solid; and the police are angry with State Attorney Magat.

It appears the Asst. State Attorney felt the crime was not really that big a deal. As TMZ noted: “You’ll recall State’s Attorney Kim Foxx recused herself from the case. She reportedly had asked cops to stand down at the behest of Tina Tchen – Michelle Obama’s former Chief of Staff and a friend of Jussie’s family. The conflict forced Foxx to bow out. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office tells us the decision to drop all charges against Jussie was made by Asst. State Attorney Joseph Magats”.

Joseph Magats, the Asst. State’s Attorney, said he saw no problems with the police investigation or the evidence against Smollett. The charges against Smollett were simply dropped in return for his agreement to do community service, and for forfeiting his bond to the city of Chicago.

Upon making the decision to drop the charges, asst. state attorney Joseph Magats also  said: “Here’s the thing – we work to prioritize violent crime and the drivers of violent crime. Public safety is our number one priority. I don’t see Jussie Smollett as a threat to public safety.

Magats went on to say, “We stand behind the investigation, we stand behind the decision to charge him and we stand behind the charges in the case. The mere fact that it was disposed of in an alternative manner does not mean that there were any problems or infirmities in the case or the evidence.”

The decision to drop charges is fully, and specifically, upon the Cook County Asst. State Attorney Joseph Magat. The reasoning is transparently political. Smollett is connected to important Democrats and people within the party apparatus.

Magat’s position is predictable; the Asst. State Attorney for Cook county will claim if he took the Smollett case to it’s conclusion the sentence would likely be community service as punishment. Well, Jussie Smollett will still do the community service, but will not have the conviction… that’s the deal. Two-tiered justice.

This decision is so corrupt and so obviously politically connected, that even Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel cannot stand behind it. WATCH:

.

PS, In my humble opinion, the Smollett hate crime was planned as part of the Kamala Harris presidential candidacy rollout.  Jussie Smollett just did a terrible job at pulling it off and the entire operation went sideways.

Prosecutors Drop Charges Against Jussie Smollett, But Stand Behind Evidence Of His Guilt — The Federalist

Chicago prosecutors dropped all charges against Jussie Smollett on Tuesday, simultaneously insisting the move did not “exonerate him.”

Chicago prosecutors dropped all charges against disgraced actor Jussie Smollett on Tuesday, simultaneously insisting the move did not “exonerate him” and came as part of an agreement he would complete community service.

After Smollett claimed to be the victim of a hate crime in January, evidence steadily emerged to demonstrate the alleged attack had been staged by the “Empire” star. Smollett was charged in February with 16 counts of disorderly conduct related to filing a false report, all of which were dropped by Cook County prosecutors on Tuesday.

“We stand behind the investigation, we stand behind the decision to charge him and we stand behind the charges in the case. The mere fact that it was disposed of in an alternative manner does not mean that there were any problems or infirmities in the case or the evidence,” Joe Magats, the first assistant state’s attorney, told Julie Bosman of the New York Times, further claiming, “We didn’t exonerate him.”

“The charges against Smollett were dropped in return for his agreement to do community service, [Magats] said, and for forfeiting his bond to the city of Chicago,” Bosman reported. For her part, Smollett’s attorney Elizabeth Brown Holmes insisted no deal had been struck with prosecutors.

Magats said the charges were dropped in part because Smollett is not thought to be a threat to public safety, not because there were problems with the evidence. “Here’s the thing—we work to prioritize violent crime and the drivers of violent crime. Public safety is our number one priority. I don’t see Jussie Smollett as a threat to public safety,” he reportedly explained.

Smollett immediately took a victory lap. A spokeswoman for his lawyers referred to the actor as “a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to judgment.” (Of course, the actual rush to judgement was actually in the opposite direction.) In a press conference at the Chicago courthouse, Smollett himself claimed he had been “truthful and consistent on every level from day one.”

Even in dismissing the charges, prosectors clearly did not agree, as evidenced by Magats’s defense of the evidence. One detective who worked on the case called the turn of events a “punch in the gut.”

“Central Detective Cmdr. Edward Wodnicki, whose detectives led the investigation into Smollett, said prosecutors gave no heads up to police that the charges would be dropped. He also expressed concern that it left it looking as if police mishandled the investigation,” the Chicago Tribune reported. According to Wodnicki, detectives found “overwhelming” evidence against Smollett.

“It’s absolutely a punch in the gut,” he told the Tribune. “We worked very, very closely throughout our three-week investigation to get to the point where we arrested the offender. So for the state’s attorney’s office at this point to dismiss the charges … without discussing this with us at all is just shocking.” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the dropped charges constituted a “whitewash of justice.”

While Smollett maintains his innocence, Nigerian brothers Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo have already admitted they accepted payment to help stage the attack.

Just last week, the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police requested the Justice Department probe whether “County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx asked Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson to let the FBI investigate Smollett’s allegations. … after the former chief of staff to former first lady Michelle Obama informed Foxx that Smollett’s family had concerns about the probe.” Foxx ultimately recused herself from the case, and Magats took over.

March 26 Transforming Prayer

Scripture reading: Colossians 4:2–4

Key verse: Isaiah 26:3

You will keep him in perfect peace,

Whose mind is stayed on You,

Because he trusts in You.

In the movie version of Shadowlands, which portrays the endearing relationship between Christian apologist C. S. Lewis and Joy Gresham, a friend comments to Lewis that God finally answered his prayers. As part of his response, Lewis says, “Prayer doesn’t change God; it changes me.”

How profound and true that is! Your communication with God is your intimate connection with Him, and He allows you to participate in the work that He is doing and even to see His actions in relationship to your prayers. God hears and answers every prayer, but His purposes in prayer go far beyond giving you a measurable response.

God wants to transform your life through the process of prayer. Your personal relationship with Christ is deepened and enlarged when you spend time talking to Him. As you come into His presence with reverence and a quiet heart, ready to listen, He begins to purify your heart and sift your priorities. You develop a passion for obedience to God, and you begin to see Him as the Provider for all your needs.

Most important, you experience the peace that comes from knowing God is in control (Phil. 4:6–7). Your anxiety melts away as you learn to trust Him. These are just some of the ways God uses prayer to change your heart. The more you pray, the more transformations you’ll discover.

Change me, Lord, as I wait in Your presence. Let my anxiety melt away and let me learn to trust You.[1]

Headed for Destruction: The Southern Baptist Convention — Reformation Charlotte

The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) has been long heralded as one of the last standing conservative denominations in the US. Beginning in 1979, through what was known as the “conservative resurgence” (also dubbed the Fundamentalist Takeover) of the SBC, headed up by conservative leaders like Paul Pressler and Albert Mohler, the denomination took a swift turn from liberalism to a strong, doctrinally distinct position in evangelicalism.

Doctrines such as the inerrancy of Scripture, the exclusivity of Christ, and the distinctiveness of the Christian life were at the core of the resurgence and held of utmost importance to those in the movement. In other words, to be a Southern Baptist was to be set apart from the traditions of liberalism and the world and embracing a distinctly Christian, Baptist, life with Jesus Christ as the focus.

Sadly, this last major bastion of conservative theology has embraced a new kind of doctrine–one that’s a mixture of Kingdom and world. Largely funnelled through what’s known as the New Calvinist movement (not to be confused with Reformed Christianity), spearheaded by The Gospel Coalition (TGC) and the SBC Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) through leaders such as Tim Keller and Russell Moore, respectively, the denomination has embraced a world-focused ideology of social justice that has become the front and center of the evangelical debate.

This movement takes on a whole new persona that is foreign to the historical and orthodox doctrines of the Christian church. The ambitions of this push, while on the surface seem virtuous and noble, are actually a distraction from the gospel and the Great Commission–if not another gospel altogether.

Top Ten False Teachers You’ll Find in Evangelical Churches — Reformation Charlotte

False teachers are everywhere — they’re a dime a dozen. The Bible tells us that in the last days, many false prophets will arise and mislead many (Matthew 24:11), and we see this taking place right before our eyes. In fact, you can hardly swing a dead cat without hitting a false teacher. Just turn on TBN, you’ll see endless amounts of them. But another, more nefarious kind of false teacher is the one that lurks in otherwise common Evangelical churches. These are the ones that are more difficult to notice.

For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Even worse, Jussie Smollett and his lawyer are sticking to the BIG LIE that Smollett was attacked by racist white Trump supporters.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel held a presser Tuesday afternoon to address the shocking news that prosecutors dropped charges against Smollett without discussing it with the police department.

Eddie Johnson repeatedly stated the Jussie Smollett is guilty of staging a hate hoax crime in January and he did it to advance his career.

‘There’s one set of rules for the powerful and influential and it’s totally wrong,’ Eddie Johnson said.

Even crooked Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel called the decision to drop all charges against Smollett a ‘whitewash of justice.’

“Do I think justice was served? No…I think this city is still owed an apology.” Eddie Johnson said.

Mr. Johnson said crooked prosecutors brokered a deal in secret to circumvent the judicial system.

I land about 1015 Chicago time. My cell is [redacted]. Many thanks!”
