I ran across my transcripts from undergrad this week. It was interesting to look back at the grades I received in each class. I remembered some of those less-than-A grades being justified, but others were less deserved, at least as I remember it! Even more interesting was that I didn’t vividly recall attending a couple of the classes listed! I’ve no doubt that I did, but it felt a little bit like that dream so many of us have where we arrive at the end of the semester and realize there’s a class we forgot to attend and now it’s time for the final exam.
It’s funny how our memory distorts things, isn’t it? That’s why I’m so thankful for technology like photographs, that help bring to mind fond and fun memories of times and people past. I suppose that’s also why many people journal (a discipline I admittedly struggle with, so don’t practice regularly). Writing down our thoughts and activities not only helps us remember, but it also helps us look back and see God’s sovereign hand in our lives, bringing us to praise and thank Him for His goodness and protection.
That’s one of the many reasons why the Bible is so precious. Far more than a mere journal of thoughts and opinions, the Bible is filled with historical, poetic, prophetic, and didactic writing. No matter the genre, we see our triune God revealed and His doctrine imparted. The best part? It was written by God himself, as He used His Holy Spirit to inspire men to write down His Word. That means the Bible is more trustworthy than any mortal journal, and even more sure than a photograph. We can know that every word is true and either has come to pass or will come to pass in the future. What a gift!
And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Where does your security lie? Is God your refuge, your hiding place, your stronghold, your shepherd, your counselor, your friend, your redeemer, your saviour, your guide? If He is, you don’t need to search any further for security.
