Scripture reading: Colossians 2:1–7
Key verse: Colossians 2:7
Rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
A major portion of Paul’s writings was a tool of defense against the growing infiltration of apostasy in the early church. Christianity was not the only religion of the day, but it was the only faith that offered evidence of eternal, infallible truth.
Early Christians were so eager to grow in the knowledge of Christ that they often unknowingly accepted false doctrine as truth. Acutely aware of the problem, Paul sent men like Timothy, Titus, Silas, and others to exhort and encourage struggling believers.
The cruelty of false teaching knows no limits. In Thessalonica, believers had received word from false prophets that the Rapture had already occurred. This ploy of Satan set off such a wave of disillusionment that only a letter from Paul dissipated its erroneous influence (1 Thess. 4:13–18).
Apostasy is as alive today as it was in the New Testament era. In fact, as we approach the return of Jesus Christ, it will only grow and become more shrewd in its deception. The one sure way to equip yourself against the enemy’s deception is to saturate your mind with the Word of God. No other source is the origin of eternal, unchangeable truth. Don’t be deceived! Ask God to give you His discernment for every situation you face.
Saturate my mind with Your Word, Lord. Give me discernment for every situation I face today.
