READING: 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

I admit that I’m old-fashioned. I remember the days when we first got a push-button telephone. Indeed, I remember when we had party lines—when we’d need to ask others to get off the line so we could call someone else. That said, you understand why I don’t fully understand the value of communicating via texts today. I’m concerned, in fact, that too many young leaders want to do ministry via texts, without spending time with people or talking to them with their voices.

On the other hand, I do think we miss some discipling opportunities when we refuse to live in a texting world. Particularly with our young disciples, we can use texts to:

    • send a daily Bible verse to them
    • write and send a daily prayer for them
    • check in on them for the purpose of accountability
    • let them know we love them and are praying for them
    • allow them to connect with us quickly when they face temptation

Maybe you can think of other ways to use texts to disciple. Because that’s the world we live in (and it, too, is changing so that texts may soon be an out-of-date method of communication), we need to take advantage of the opportunity.

PRAYER: “Lord, help me to use all options to invest in others.”
