READING: Leviticus 4-7, Hebrews 3

Yesterday’s devotion dealt with the danger of drifting in our walk with God. Today, the writer of Hebrews gives us one means by which we will not turn away from God: “But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception” (Heb 3:13). Daily—not only weekly, monthly, or yearly, but every day—we are to encourage each other to remain faithful in following Jesus. When we walk together in this journey, we’re much less inclined to find ourselves wandering.

The problem is that most of us don’t have encouragers in our lives, and we’re not generally encouraging others, either. When we do choose to encourage someone, it’s usually because we’ve learned that he or she is already struggling – and our encouragement comes “late in the game.” What might happen if we intentionally encouraged others to stay faithful simply because we’re brothers and sisters serving God in the midst of ongoing spiritual conflict? What would happen if we encouraged each other just because the Bible calls us to do so? My guess is that “sin’s deception” would lose some of its power in our lives.

Today, take an opportunity to encourage someone to remain faithful to God. I pray that this devotion is an encouragement from me to you.

PRAYER: “God, give me encouragers—and let me be an encourager to others.”
