A Grumbly Heart — Daily Devotionals by Thoughts about God

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life.”  Philippians 2:14-16a

The decision did not make sense to me. “What were these people thinking? They’re leaders; they should start acting like it!”

It was a time in my life when I was not happy with the decisions that were being made around me.

I had a grumbly heart!

In an early morning prayer group someone started to pray about the very situation that was giving me a grumbly heart. As I listened to that prayer, I was so convicted by an attitude of faith and obedience. In that moment, it was as if God gave me a glimpse of what was in my heart. My grumbling was taking me down a path of discontent, irritation, anxiety, and criticism. The prayer of my friend reminded me of another path; a path that would lead to peace beyond human understanding.

Paul, in his letter to the Philippians says,

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

I suddenly realized if I chose a path of prayerful trust instead of grumbling that I would not only experience God’s peace but also a transformation toward becoming a “blameless and pure child of God, shining like a star in the night sky!”

I made a decision. I chose the path to peace.

Father God, thank you for your Spirit’s convicting work in my life. I give you my grumbling and complaining. I long to walk the path of humble prayer in faith and obedience that leads to your perfect peace and transformative work in my life. Amen.

Ask God to reveal to you what’s going on in your heart. Is there grumbling and complaining? Can you trust God to work in and through today’s circumstances for his purposes? If not, invite the Spirit to change your heart.

February 26 – Christ pouring out the Spirit and God’s mission — Reformed Perspective

Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. – Acts 2:33

Scripture reading: Acts 2:1-13

Having been born by and anointed with the Holy Spirit, having offered the Father the sacrifice of His life and death through the Spirit, having been vindicated by the Spirit when He arose, having ascended into heaven through the Spirit and been exalted at the right hand of His Father, Jesus received from His Father the promise of the new covenant Spirit. He poured this Spirit out on the church on the day of Pentecost as the climax of Israel’s history and of the history of His life.

Jesus had promised that He would ask His Father to send Israel the Spirit. He commanded His disciples not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait to be baptized with the Spirit as the fulfilment of the promise of the Father. Obedient to this command, the disciples remained in Jerusalem where, with a group of about 120 people, they devoted themselves to prayer.

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all in one place. Suddenly, they were baptized with the Holy Spirit and all began to proclaim the mighty works of God in different languages as the Spirit enabled them. This symbolizes the incorporation of the nations into Israel, participating in God’s mission for His glory. Peter explains that by participating in Christ’s prophetic ministry from heaven, the promise of the new covenant, where in the last days God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh. Was fulfilled. This outpouring of the Spirit is the climax of Israel’s history and the history of Jesus’ life before He returns.

Suggestions for prayer

Praise your heavenly Father that Jesus poured out the Holy Spirit on Pentecost and ask Him to daily fill you with the Holy Spirit so that you can faithfully participate in God’s mission for His glory.

Get Ready for the Great Reset (Part 4) — SharperIron Articles

In our first three installments on the Great Reset—proposed for the world by the global elite, including politicians as well as many influential corporate leaders—we have looked at some of the basic concepts involved in the Reset, as well as two extremes to avoid when evaluating it from a Christian perspective.

We need to move on from there to discern how we should properly evaluate these global trends through a Biblical lens (to use a phrase made popular by Ken Ham)—yes, even through the lens of Biblical prophecy.

But before we deal with that specifically, let’s take a moment to reflect and remind ourselves where we are today—and just how far we’ve come in the past 12 months.

Here We Go: House Democrats Pass Homosexual and Lesbian Equality Act That Critics Say Is an Attack on Religious Freedom and Lets Men Compete in Women’s Athletics | BCNN1 – Black Christian News Network

The Equality Act passed the House of Representatives Thursday with full Democratic support, but with only three Republicans signing on.

The bill enshrines LGBTQ protections in the nation’s labor and civil rights laws, a top priority for President Joe Biden.

The vote was 224 for the bill and 206 against.

Among the Republicans who bucked their party were Reps. John Katko and Tom Reed of New York and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, who had all voted in favor of the Equality Act before.

When the Equality Act passed the last Congress in May 2019, eight Republicans overall had joined their Democratic colleagues.

Two current members – Reps. Elise Stefanik of New York and Mario Díaz-Balart of Florida – switched their yes votes to no. Three other Republicans who had voted in the affirmative in 2019 are no longer in Congress.

The Equality Act amends existing civil rights law to explicitly include sexual orientation and gender identification as protected characteristics.

The protections would extend to employment, housing, loan applications, education, public accommodations and other areas.

‘The war machine is back’: Biden reminded of previous criticism of Trump’s ‘escalation’ in Syria after he orders new strike — RT USA News

‘The war machine is back’: Biden reminded of previous criticism of Trump’s ‘escalation’ in Syria after he orders new strike

President Joe Biden drew praise from hawks and accusations of hypocrisy from critics after he authorized a reprisal airstrike on Syria, claiming that by bombing “Iran-backed militia” infrastructure, he is deescalating tensions.

The Biden administration, which has publicly stated its intention to return to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and back away from its predecessor’s war-mongering approach, has been panned for seemingly following in Donald Trump’s footsteps on Thursday with an airstrike on Syria.

The Pentagon said that the attack was launched at 6 pm eastern time on Biden’s order, and resulted in the destruction of “multiple facilities”believed to be run by Iranian-backed militias in eastern Syria. The Pentagon spun the assault as a “defensive precision strike,” saying it was in retaliation to rocket attacks on the US and coalition troops in Iraq.

US strike in Syria at Biden’s orders destroys ‘multiple facilities’ of ‘Iranian-backed militia’ – Pentagon

However, it appears not everybody bought that narrative. People online were quick to remind Biden and his staffers of previous statements denouncing such incursions as dangerous escalations that encroach on Syrian sovereignty.

Online sleuths dug up a tweet by Biden’s current spokesperson Jen Psaki, denouncing the Trump administration’s missile strike on Syria in April 2017 as illegal.

“Also what is the legal authority for strikes? Assad is a brutal dictator. But Syria is a sovereign country,” Psaki tweeted at the time.

In January last year, Biden also chided Trump’s decision to assassinate Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, calling it “a hugely escalatory move in an already dangerous region.”

There have been unconfirmed reports of casualties resulting from Thursday’s strike.

Some observers pointed out the irony in the Pentagon’s claim that the bombing raid somehow aimed to “de-escalate the overall situation in both eastern Syria and Iraq.”

For some, the airstrike poured cold water on expectations that the Biden administration was poised to rejoin the landmark nuclear accord in the near future, though prominent ‘Never Trumper’ Jennifer Rubin suggested that the attack is compatible with the Biden’s administration declared interest in the JCPOA.

The BBC’s Suzanne Kianpour also praised the bombing raid, arguing it is part of the Biden administration’s negotiating tactics.

The move also drew accolades from Mark Dubowitz, the head of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), described as a hawkish neo-conservative think tank set up after 9/11 to push the War on Terror.

“Credit to the Biden administration for responding. Turning a blind eye to regional aggression and offering economic relief will only encourage more destructive behavior by the regime in Iran and their proxies,” he wrote.

While Washington claimed that the strikes were in retaliation to recent attacks on American and coalition personnel in Iraq, it did not specify which one. Tehran denied any involvement in the recent rocket attack near a US military base in Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan that killed one non-American civilian contractor and left nine others injured, including one US service member, on February 15.

The attack was claimed by a Shia group calling itself Saraya Awliya al-Dam at the time.

‘Papers, Please’: Vaccine Passports Have Officially Arrived – LewRockwell

Article Image

By showing proof that you’ve received a COVID-19 vaccine, perhaps you can once again board an airplane and travel freely, attend a concert or enjoy a meal in your favorite restaurant, just like you used to.

Except, being required to present your “papers” in order to live your life isn’t actually freedom at all — it’s discrimination, and even a move toward technocratic fascism, one that’s setting the stage for increased surveillance and erosion of your privacy.

Nonetheless, this blatant move toward an ever-increasing surveillance state is being welcomed by many who have been led to believe the passports are necessary to protect public health and safety.

The Equality Act Is Set to Destroy Religious Freedom—What Should We Do? | Answers in Genesis

The Equality Act is for anything but “equality”—it’s for destroying freedom of religion and freedom of conscience in this nation.

It’s being described as “the most comprehensive assault on Christianity in America ever written into law,” “a dangerous threat to our nation,” “the Left’s woke new heresy code,” and “something no American should stand for.” What is it? The so-called “Equality Act” that was recently introduced to Congress. But it’s for anything but “equality”—it’s for destroying freedom of religion and freedom of conscience in this nation, as guaranteed by the First Amendment.

It’s for anything but “equality”—it’s for destroying freedom of religion and freedom of conscience in this nation, as guaranteed by the First Amendment.

Many Christian leaders and organizations are expressing their concern about this far-reaching bill. Why? Well, because, as the American Family Association said, “The bill has nothing to do with equality, but everything to do with punishing Christians’ religious liberty.”

Here’s how Franklin Graham describes the possible effects of this legislation in an email. (By the way, the proposed legislation is written in “legalese” to obscure the catastrophic changes this legislation represents for American freedoms.):

The Equality Act will:

  • Designate schools, churches, and healthcare organizations as “public accommodations.” With this, schools, churches, and hospitals could be forced to accept the government’s beliefs and mandates about sexual orientation and gender identity. That would be highly intrusive and incredibly far-reaching. It will threaten everyday speech where people can be fined or lose their jobs for using the wrong name or pronouns.
  • Legislate that we allow boys in girls’ sports, boys in girls’ locker rooms, men in women’s shelters, and men in women’s prisons. It will force teachers and students to publicly pretend that a biological male is a female. Schools will be encouraged or mandated to instruct first, second, and third graders that they can choose to be a boy or a girl, or neither, or both, making biological sex (and science) a relic of the past.
  • Use the force of law across all 50 states to strip Christian and other religious ministries of their right to hire people of shared faith to pursue a shared mission. Can you imagine a Christian organization being forced to hire people hostile to its deeply held beliefs who have no passion for its beliefs, teachings, and mission? That doesn’t work.
  • Strip health professionals of their rights of conscience. It will force doctors and medical professionals who long to do no harm to engage in gender transition treatments such as hormone-blocking, cross-sex hormones or surgery. It is obvious that a Catholic or faith-based hospital should not have to perform gender transition surgeries that go entirely against all they believe.
  • Be a tool used by the government to deny or threaten accreditation to religious colleges and universities if they do not satisfy the demands of the secular Left to apply sexual orientation and gender identity to dorms, sports, places of privacy and even teachings. The Act could be used as a weapon to threaten the availability of federal student loans and grants to students at certain disfavored religious schools [emphasis added].

Franklin Graham ends this summary by saying, “the impact of this legislation is immense.”

The religious liberties group Alliance Defending Freedom said the followingabout the impact of this legislation and included examples showing how some of this is already happening—it will just get much worse if this Equality Act passes:

  • The “Equality Act” could forbid churches and religious nonprofitsfrom requiring their employees to live out their religious beliefs about marriage, sexual morality, and the distinction between the sexes. They could be required to open their sex-specific facilities to members of the opposite sex. ADF successfully represented one Massachusetts church after the government threatened to force it to open its women’s shelter for victims of domestic violence to males.
  • The “Equality Act” would threaten religious foster care and adoption agencies with closure if they operate according to their deeply held belief that the best place for a child is a home with a married mother and father. In New York, for example, the state is using a sexual orientation, gender identity regulation—similar to the “Equality Act”—to shutter the adoption services of New Hope Family Services, which has been placing children in loving homes for over 50 years. ADF is representing New Hope in court.
  • It would threaten creative professionals and other business owners who simply want to live and work according to their beliefs. ADF successfully represented promotional printer Blaine Adamsonafter he respectfully declined an organization’s request to print shirts with a message promoting an LGBT pride festival because the message violated his religious beliefs. But Blaine offered to connect the organization to another printer who would create the requested shirts. Even so, the organization filed a discrimination complaint against Blaine, and a local human rights commission ordered him to undergo diversity training.
  • The “Equality Act” would also force individuals to speak messages that violate their beliefs under the threat of punishment. ADF is representing Dr. Nicholas Meriwether, who was disciplined by Shawnee State University for declining to refer to a male student as a woman. He offered to refer to the student by first or last name only, in order to respect both the student and his own beliefs, but this did not satisfy the university, which still punished him.

ADF adds:

In the past, similar proposals have claimed to respect the concerns of the religious community, offering a few narrow protections for religious freedom. But the “Equality Act” offers no protections for religious freedom. In addition, the bill would forbid religious individuals and organizations even to invoke the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. That would make it harder for the faithful to defend themselves against a bill designed to punish them for living out their beliefs.

Does that sound like equal treatment to you?

Does that sound like equal treatment to you?

Essentially, the “Equality Act” gives people of faith an ultimatum: Change your faith-based practices or face government punishment.

The Bottom Line

Laws must respect freedom and promote justice for every citizen, no matter who they are. But that is not what the “Equality Act” does. Instead, it threatens Americans’ fundamental liberties. And that is something no American should stand for.

The Family Research Council sums it up this way: “It’s hard to imagine just how damaging this bill would be. Essentially, it takes every issue the Left feels is a sacred cow and wraps it into one bill—a legislative right to abortion on demand, special privileges for sexual orientation and gender identity, and the abolition of religious freedom . . . It sticks the government’s long talons into practically every area of life.”

So What Should We Do?

Not only will it hurt religious freedom, but it will make it easier than ever for people to live out the wickedness of their hearts, which leads to more hurt and brokenness in our world.

As part of being salt and light in this world, Christians must do what we can (our human responsibility) to stop this evil legislation from passing. Not only will it hurt religious freedom, but it will make it easier than ever for people to live out the wickedness of their hearts, which leads to more hurt and brokenness in our world. Here’s what Graham suggests that Christians do immediately (and remember, President Biden promised to pass this bill within his first 100 days in office, so this matter is urgent):

The House has already passed this legislation one time previously, so it will likely pass in the House again. But then it has to come to the Senate, and we need you to contact your US Senators to vote NO.

People of faith need to PRAY. Churches need to recognize the significance of this and pray corporately, asking for God’s intervention and mercy to extend the religious freedoms we have been blessed with for so long.

In these fleeting hours before the Equality Act comes up for vote again, we must act now! Please contact your congressmember and U.S. senators and ask them to vote NO. I also encourage you to let the White House know about your strong opposition to this bill.

I too encourage people to contact their representatives urgently and firmly, but kindly, to express strong opposition to this bill.

Pray for those who lead our nation, that they would do the right thing and vote against this legislation.

I also urge you to pray for this nation. Get your Christian friends and your church together to pray for God’s mercy on this country. Pray for those who lead our nation: that they would do the right thing and vote against this legislation. And as we pray “thy will be done,” also pray that God would give his people boldness and courage like Daniel in the Old Testament to do what God commands—no matter what happens—in regard to this bill.

It’s important that we remember to obey God, not man, and that God is sovereign over everything. So while we will do what we can to stop this terrible legislation and pray that God will preserve religious freedom, we know that, if it passes, we will continue to do what God has called us to do: speak the truth in love, contend for the faith, be salt and light, share the gospel, and defend the faith.

Those who want this bill to pass will surely accuse Christians (as they do constantly) of “hate” against LGBT individuals and others. But we don’t hate anyone—we love them, obeying God’s command to love our neighbor as ourselves. Sadly in our culture today, disagreeing with someone and having vast worldview differences because of different starting points (man’s word vs. God’s Word) are misconstrued as “hate.” But no matter what names we are called, Christians must continue to stand for and speak the truth in love, sharing with the world the only message that truly saves—the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Thanks for stopping by and thanks for praying,
Ken
