April 27 Evening Quotes of The Day

Finding Excellency and Happiness in Christ
Ecclesiastes 2:1–23; Hebrews 4:8–10

Worldly men imagine that there is true excellency and true happiness in those things that they are pursuing. They think that if they could but obtain them, they should be happy; and when they obtain them, and cannot find happiness, they look for happiness in something else, and are still upon the pursuit. But Christ Jesus has true excellency, and so great excellency that when they come to see it they look no further, but the mind rests there.

The Heart’s Capacity for Deceiving Itself
Proverbs 20:9; Isaiah 64:6; Jeremiah 17:9–10; Titus 3:3; 1 John 1:8

The human heart has so many recesses for vanity, so many lurking places for falsehood, is so shrouded by fraud and hypocrisy, that it often deceives itself.

My mom had a sudden and massive heart attack in 2014. I never got to say goodbye. I never had the chance to tell her I loved her and to ask her to forgive me for all the times that I didn’t love her as I ought to have loved her. It was an extremely painful experience. Yet, in the face of extreme sorrow, the Lord graciously filled my mind with thoughts of eternity that I never had before.

We don’t have to be weighed down with perpetual regrets for not having loved believers as we ought to have loved them here and now.

One of those thoughts came on the ride to the cemetery. With anguish of heart my dad said, “I didn’t always love your Mom the way I should have. I know that I won’t be married to Mom in heaven, but I will love her perfectly for all eternity.” This, in turn, awakened thoughts in me that I’ve never had before. One of those thoughts was that Christ has purchased for believers not only forgiveness of sins and a perfect righteousness but also the prospect of loving other believers perfectly in glory for all of eternity.

In Charity and Its Fruits, Jonathan Edwards made the following observation about the way in which the love of God will be worked out perfectly in the saints so that we will love each other perfectly forever:

In every heart in heaven, love dwells and reigns. The heart of God is the original seat or subject of love. Divine love is in him…from God, love flows out toward all the inhabitants of heaven…the angels and saints all love each other. All the members of the glorious society of heaven are sincerely united. There is not a single secret or open enemy among them all. Not a heart is there that is not full of love, and not a solitary inhabitant that is not beloved by all the others. And as all are lovely, so all see each other’s loveliness with full complacence and delight. Every soul goes out in love to every other; and among all the blessed inhabitants, love is mutual, and full, and eternal.

This doesn’t mean that we get to shrug off our responsibility to love those around us now as God requires us to love them. Our Lord Jesus commanded us to love one another as he loved us (John 13:34). We should be zealous to love other believers with the same love with which we have been loved by Christ. We are to love believers now to the best of our ability by the grace of God. However, we don’t have to be weighed down with perpetual regrets for not having loved believers as we ought to have loved them here and now. Of course, we must go to the Lord for pardoning mercy and grace for the many times that we have failed in this respect. Additionally, we must strive to keep short accounts with each other in this life. Still, we know that we all fall miserably short of God’s standard of holiness and love in our relationships with one another.

Christ has purchased for us an eternity in which we will love each other as he has loved us.

We will never love as we ought to love in this life. This, in turn, should lead us to rest in what Christ has accomplished and purchased for us. Though we have failed to love believers with a perfect love, we will forever render to them what we know we owe them and what we sorrow over not having shown them more of in this life. Christ has purchased for us an eternity in which we will love each other as he has loved us—with a perfect and an everlasting love. If you are in Christ, be comforted by the fact that you have an eternity of love awaiting you in which you will love every other believer as you ought to have and as you wish you had loved them in this life.

April 27 – Anointed by Christ — Reformed Perspective

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.” – Psalm 23:5

Scripture reading: Psalm 23:5

Turning our attention this time to the second phrase in this verse, we see a great blessing that is ours in Christ. We are anointed by Christ with oil. When we think of anointing, we often think of the anointed offices of the Old Testament: prophet, priest and king. Certainly, the idea of our being anointed as prophets, priests and kings is in view here. It was also customary to anoint favored or exalted guests at a feast. In this psalm, Christ is pictured as anointing us, favoring us and exalting us as esteemed guests at His victory feast, in full view of our enemies.

Have you considered how much Christ values you?  Esteems you?  Even exalts you? Do you know that Christ, in saving you, has indeed made you little prophets, priests and kings, reigning with Him over all things?  As it is written in 2 Timothy 2:12, “If we endure, We shall also reign with Him” or also in 1 Corinthians 6:3, “Do you not know that we shall judge angels?”  This is not just something that is entirely in the future either, but Christ exalts us even now, to such an extent that Paul talks about our future being seated next to Christ on His throne as if it has already happened. Ephesians 2:6 says, “and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus” [emphasis my own].

Suggestions for prayer

Pray that the Lord would help you to grasp how much you have been given in Christ and praise Him for it. Pray that as an anointed one of Christ, you would serve Him humbly and faithfully all of your life.

How to Grow Strong in Your Weakness — Daily Devotionals by Thoughts about God

God chose the weak things of this world to shame the strong…so that no one may boast before him.” 1 Corinthians 1: 27-31

None of us likes to be weak, do we? From small up we’ve been trained to “be strong.” “Show them that you can do it!”

As an adult when weakness overwhelms us, we feel embarrassed. Some people use weakness as an excuse. “I could never do that. I just don’t have the strength.”

Some people focus on their weakness—it becomes their identity. “I can’t help it. That’s just me.

God sends weakness for a reason: to make us aware how much we need Him. God accepts us just as we are but He doesn’t leave us that way.

Through weakness God humbles us before Him. When He sees our obedience to move ahead even when we feel weak, He sends His strength and blessings into our lives. Have you experienced this?

I sure have! Sometimes, at the end of the day, I’m surprised at what has been accomplished.

Why weakness? God wants people to be surprised at us. They’ll know without a doubt, God did it through us.

Weakness is strength when we depend on Him and let him take over. When we lean on Him rather than on our own understanding. This is how we grow strong in our weakness.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths.” Proverbs 3: 5,6 (NLT)

How to Grow Strong in Your Weakness — Daily Devotionals by Thoughts about God

Faith Plus Works Doesn’t Work — The Cripplegate

Nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.

Galatians 2:16

Judgment day is coming.

God has already determined the moment of your last breath on earth. That moment is fast approaching and then you will be instantly judged. (Her. 9:27)

We will all stand before God one day soon and will give an account of our lives. We will all fall short of the standard of God to make it to Heaven (Matt. 5:48) and we will all be given guilty sentences.

Some though, through the mercy of God will be allowed entry into Heaven. Those who will have put their faith in Jesus Christ.

The question though is, what does it mean to put our faith in Christ?

We all know people who say they believe in Jesus, but then their life remains unchanged. That is not saving faith.

On the other hand we all know people who say they believe in Jesus but when asked about judgment day they might say something like:

“I’m a good person”.

“I’ve done more good than bad”.

“I was baptized as a child”.

“I confess my sins to the priest”.

“I’ve done good works”.

Sadly, anyone who utters these words is without saving faith as well.

Having faith in Christ means that you believe that Jesus has saved you from all your sins in an instant.

Having faith in Christ means that you believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins, because of the fact that you couldn’t save yourself.

Having faith in Christ means that you believe that salvation is through faith in Christ alone.

And the Bible is clear that salvation is by faith alone.

Hebrews 11 makes this point over and over again.

“Without faith it is impossible to please God”, shouts the writer of Hebrews in Hebrews 11:6.

It goes on to say that Noah “became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.” Hebrews 11:7

The chapter goes on describing that it was the faith of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses and the countless who came after them that saved them. Not their works.

Elsewhere in scripture, Paul says that faith is a gift of God and salvation must be apart from works or we could boast one day that we got ourselves to Heaven. (Eph 2:8-9)

Anywhere salvation happens in the Bible it is not a process, but it happens in an instant when someone puts their faith in Christ. (Luke 19:9, Acts 8:37, Acts 16:31, Acts 9:20, Luke 23:43)

When someone adds works to faith, then they don’t have any faith at all. It’s not that they have some faith, or that there are degrees of faith, when it comes to salvation it is all or nothing.

The Bible describes faith as confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see (Heb. 11:1). In other words faith is certainty even though it has not happened yet. There is nothing less certain than adding works to salvation.

Faith plus works doesn’t work.

Let’s say you buy a phone at the store. The reason you love this phone is because it is very reliable, “it just doesn’t break”. But then, when it comes to check out time, the person at the counter offers you the insurance and you decide to buy it just in case. Do you actually have faith in the product? No, it is a lack of trust in the maker. It is not complete faith.

If you stand before God on judgment day, and you are trusting in anything other than Jesus’ righteousness, then you are not trusting in Jesus.

Jesus demanded complete trust.

In John 14:6 He says that He is THE way, THE truth and THE life, and that no man can go to the father but through Him. Adding works slaps Jesus in the face.

In Matthew 11:28 Jesus says, “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” He wants people to stop doing works to earn salvation and instead to simply put their faith in Him.

Finally in John 6:28-29 he is asked straight out, “What are we to do, so that we may accomplish the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”

The Bible is clear that Faith alone in the messiah is what it takes to get to Heaven, and that adding any works as a reason to merit Heaven, not only is a slap in the face to Jesus, but ultimately is a sign that the faith is not there at all.

While James rightly reminds us (James 2:14-26) that a lack of works means that there is no saving faith (or in other words that someone without works hasn’t truly been born-again), We must also remember that a trust in works also means that saving faith is missing. You can’t be born again and not believe in instant salvation! Works demands a process of salvation. Works demands a lack of trust in Jesus’ ability to save. Works says “I do not trust you Jesus!”

One of the saddest things that I think often about is the fact that so many of us are wrong about how it will go for our loved ones on judgment day.

Because of our love for them and our desire to see them go to heaven we assume that they will be ok on that day.

So many of you have neighbors, friends and family, who say that they have faith, but you know that they do not. And yet, you suppress that truth. You ignore it. You’ve learned to live with it. Perhaps you might actually wonder if they might be genuinely saved. Perhaps you’ve created a new way to Heaven just for them.

The fact of the matter is that if your loved one trusts in their goodness, they are unsaved. They are on their way to hell. The are still at war with their creator (Rom. 8:7), whose standard is perfection (Matt. 5:48), and who was willing to crush His Son on the cross for sin (Isaiah 53:10). You must get beyond the surface, and actually think about these truths.

I know that it is uncomfortable, it is tragic to think of a loved one in hell, but for their sake and for yours you must think about it. It might mean an uncomfortable conversation, it might mean the loss of a relationship, it might mean uncomfortable thanksgivings, but for the love of God and for the sake of eternity it is imperative that you consider these things.

One day when we stand before God, we will only be allowed entrance into Heaven if we have faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross. We will deserve hell, and yet, get heaven. We will owe an eternal debt, and yet share in God’s inheritance.

We must preach this Gospel to all and beg people to forsake their futile works and fully trust in Jesus.

April 27 Afternoon Quotes of The Day

Belief Requires a Miracle
Luke 16:31; Acts 8:13

The Christian Religion not only was at first attended with miracles, but even at this day cannot be believed by any reasonable person without one.

The Spirit Keeps Servants Humble
1 Corinthians 4:9; 15:8; Ephesians 3:8; 1 Timothy 1:15

Thus may the servant of God know if he has the Spirit of God: if when the Lord works some good through him, his body—since it is ever at variance with all that is good—is not therefore puffed up; but if he rather becomes viler in his own sight and if he esteems himself less than other men.

Sean McDowell on How to Respond to Christians ‘Deconstructing’ Their Faith — Faithwire

In the age of social media, we’re often made hyper-aware of the machinations of the faith journeys of complete strangers, some famous and others not. While some of that is certainly good, it can also be a bit unnerving, particularly when a once-esteemed believer abandons his or her Christian convictions.

Most recently, author Paul Maxwell, a former writer for theologian John Piper’s DesiringGod.org, announced he is no longer a Christian.

Others, like former Christian recording artist Jonathan Steingard, have concluded they “no longer believe in God.” Or, as is the case with Piper’s son Abraham, that ultimate meaning just “doesn’t exist.”

Then there are those like the late Ravi Zacharias, whose egregious actions — many of which were revealed in detail after his death in May of last year — expose a heart seemingly untransformed by the Christian faith he spent his career defending and promoting.

During a recent interview with Faithwire, Christian author and apologist Sean McDowell said it’s normal and even appropriate to “grieve” these losses, but argued it shouldn’t shake our convictions.

“I’ve got to be committed to believing because I think this is really true,” McDowell said. “So I ask myself, ‘Who do I think God is?’ ‘Why do I think the Bible’s true?’ ‘Who do I think Jesus claimed to be?’ And, as best I can, answer those questions so my faith is not rooted in my emotions when things around me change; it’s rooted in what is true.”

“It’s not enough to just know it’s true,” he continued. “I’ve got to apply it to my life and live it out. It’s one thing to know God is a loving Heavenly Father; it’s another thing to experience God’s grace personally. I want to logically know it’s true, so my faith is grounded in truth, not in a human person, because, if we know anything about people, they’re all going to let us down. … So we’ve gotta know it’s true, but we’ve also gotta live out our faith, which makes that truth become real.”

If that’s the case, he added, we will be “less tempted to jettison our faith because we have a good biblical theology, namely the sinfulness of human nature and our capacity for deception.”

***As the number of voices facing big-tech censorship continues to grow, please sign up for Faithwire’s daily newsletter and download the CBN News app, developed by our parent company, to stay up-to-date with the latest news from a distinctly Christian perspective.***

McDowell went on to point out that, more often than not, at the core of many believers’ faith “deconstruction” journeys is a secondary or tertiary issue made primary. Within Christian culture, he said, there’s often the pull to redefine “very important questions” as “salvific essential questions.”

“Let’s just keep the main thing the main thing,” McDowell said, “so when people come across these challenges to their faith, they’re not tempted to just bail on the entire ship.”

He further acknowledged his heartbreak at learning from people who “deconstructed” that their questions and sincere doubts were dismissed or condemned by their Christian communities.

“If there’s any religion that’s OK with questions,” the apologist said, “it should be Christianity, because it’s actually true and we have a powerful history of brilliant thinkers … offering thoughtful answers.”

McDowell said this wave of believers “deconstructing” their faith makes clear dismissing Christians’ valid questions has “devastating consequences.

For Christians confident in the faith but who want to come alongside their friends and family members who are “deconstructing,” McDowell urged honesty. Rather than being fearful of discourse, he encouraged Christians to “learn together” with loved ones experiencing doubt.

“Then the Christian is learning, they’re showing, ‘I’m not threatened by your questions. I love you no matter what,’” he said. “[I]f you have a friend who has questions, this is a chance for you to go deeper in your faith, relationally, because now you know it matters. So just tell that person, ‘Gosh, I wish I knew more, but I’m gonna read and think with you and help you through this.’”

Covid swabs and masks appear to contain “hooks” and strange fibers that can be inhaled directly into the lungs
Over the weekend we published a series of nearly 40 microscope photos showing strange fibers, structures and even “hooks” that are embedded in the fibers of covid nasal swabs and masks. Many of these fibers appear to possess properties that would cause them to adhere to soft tissue such as lung tissue. Their presence in covid masks is very disturbing, given that these fibers are very likely easily inhaled and may lodge in lung tissue.

Scientists Create Meat from Human Cells But Claim It’s Not Cannibalism
When is eating the flesh of humans not cannibalism? According to scientists at a company specializing in regenerative medicine and developing biomaterial for spinal cord treatments, it’s not cannibalism if the ‘steaks’ are grown from the consumer’s own cells at home … and the see this as a way to reduce the consumption of animal flesh and all of the environmental and health issues associated with it. Before you dismiss this as some futuristic dystopian fantasy, these human ‘steaks’ have a ‘brand name’ – Ourboros Steak – and prototypes are on display at a museum in London. Yikes!

Major Ramifications – Judicial Watch FOIA Request Uncovers Direct Evidence of California Government and Biden Campaign Instructing Social Media Firms to Remove Content | The Last Refuge

Judicial Watch has done an excellent job discovering direct evidence of collusion between government officials, the Biden campaign and social media companies Facebook, Twitter, Google (YouTube) to censor speech and remove content.  California officials were using a list generated by a firm called SKDK  (working for Biden campaign) to inform the social media companies of content for removal.

[…] The Office of Election Cybersecurity in the California Secretary of State’s office monitored and tracked social media posts, decided if they were misinformation, stored the posts in an internal database coded by threat level, and on 31 different occasions requested posts be removed.

This is an explosive new element to an ongoing story of big tech censorship because the documents directly highlight California government officials and tech companies working together to remove political content adverse to the interests of the Biden campaign; and later the Biden administration.

One of the California government officials, Deputy Secretary of State and Chief Communications Officer Paula Valle, even begins to question the legality of their coordinated conduct after journalists and people who had their content removed started asking for specific answers why.

[…] “the reporter at Cal Matters who PRA’d us is doing a follow-up story. We asked him to send us his questions. I am not necessarily comfortable with his line of questions and the additional doors that this will open. I want to get your feedback I would simply like to give him a statement about what our goal is and leave it at that. Thoughts?” (read more)

Those who support censorship of content have hidden their ideology behind the issue that it was/is a private company making these content decisions.  However, these documents clearly show government officials coordinating the censorship itself…. A clear violation of the first amendment.  Let the lawsuits begin.

This is additionally important because it has been reported the Federal Department of Homeland Security is also working with Big Tech to monitor the social media posting of American citizens in order to identify “domestic extremists.”

REMEMBER….  The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is now getting ready to hire public companies, individual contractors outside government, to scour public data and social media in order to provide information for the new “domestic terror watch lists.”  From the description it appears DHS is going to pay “big tech” (Google, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, SnapChat, Twitter, etc.), via contracts, to hire and organize internal monitoring teams to assist the government by sending information on citizens they deem “dangerous.”

Federal agency won’t say how Kamala’s book got in welcome bags for migrant kids | WND

A federal agency has not explained who provided copies of Vice President Kamala Harris’ children’s book to migrant children at a facility in Long Beach, California.

Harris’s book “Superheroes Are Everywhere” was included with clothing and hygiene items in welcome packs given to unaccompanied migrant minors at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, Fox News reported.

The children are medically examined and given clothing, food, snacks and a place to sleep, when they arrive at the shelter, a Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) statement said Thursday. The department did not respond to multiple requests for comment about who provided the welcome packs for the unaccompanied children or how Harris’s children’s book was reportedly included in the pack.

Harris was reportedly unaware of the welcome packs, which are usually made and distributed by community members, a White House official told Fox News.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki did not know if Harris is earning proceeds from the copies given to migrant minors, during a White House press conference Monday.

“I have to certainly check on that. Hear it’s a good book,” Psaki said.

Harris was appointed to address the surge of migrants arriving at the southern border in March, though she has not traveled to the border or held a press conference on the matter, the Post reported.

“Republicans are attacking you, saying you shouldn’t be in New Hampshire talking about infrastructure, you should be at the southern border talking about immigration,” a reporter with WMUR, a local ABC affiliate, asked Harris Sunday. “How do you respond to that?”

Harris told the reporter she was “not going to play political games.”

The Office of Refugee Resettlement will host 1,000 unaccompanied migrant minors at the Long Beach Emergency Intake Site until they are placed with sponsors in the interior of the U.S., according to HHS. The agency has expanded to several temporary locations to provide shelter for an increasing number of unaccompanied minors in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody.

CBP officials encountered over 172,000 migrants including a record number of unaccompanied migrant minors reaching nearly 19,000 in March, according to the agency. Over 21,900 migrant children were in HHS custody as of Monday, the agency reported.

April 27 Morning Quotes of The Day

“Let Your Heart Be Knowledge”
John 5:24; 1 Corinthians 9:10; Ephesians 1:13; Colossians 1:5; 2 Timothy 2:15; James 5:7

He who thinks to know anything without knowledge which is true and validated by life knows nothing. He is deceived by the snake, no longer loving life. But he who has knowledge with fear and who seeks after life, he plants in hope, expecting fruit. Let your heart be knowledge and your life the true and comprehended word.

Understanding God as Father
Romans 8:15–17; Ephesians 4:4–6

It makes all the difference in the world how we look upon God. Some people fear God, but when they understand that He is their Father, that fear is gone.

April 27 Verse of The Day

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is img_0662.jpg

3:8 who can but prophesy. Just as a lion’s voice evokes fear, so the voice of the Lord compels the prophets to proclaim His word (Deut. 18:18; cf. 1 Cor. 9:16).[1]

3:8 Two more rhetorical questions complete the group of nine (vv. 3–6). It would do Israel no good to forbid prophecy (2:12; 7:13, 16); the true prophet must prophesy, just as certainly as God’s judgment must come to pass.[2]

The effect God’s warnings should have (3:8)

a. The people should fear (3:8a). Half of the dispute is settled already. The audience knows that the punishment announced in 3:2b is a warning of what God will do. But the dispute for human hearts, which are the object of the dispute, is still to be settled. If there is no positive response to the mind’s understanding of the message, the dispute will fail to cause its intended results. Thus Amos calls for a personal decision of the heart and will. This shift is revealed in the change in style which contrasts a statement of fact (3:7) with a call for a response (3:8). In the process Amos integrates earlier images (3:4–6) and applies them to the present human situation. The hypothetical attack of a lion becomes reality, and the sound of the trumpet warning is heard. God’s word is the warning and God is the lion (1:2). Since he has roared, he must be in the process of attacking his prey (3:4). This roar is like a trumpet blast which warns a city (3:6); this roar is the prophet’s message of judgment that precedes God’s action (3:7). Is it possible that men will not fear? What other results could this warning cause? A response of fear is necessary if the two parties are to walk together in unity again (3:3).

b. The prophet should warn (3:8b). To encourage this response, Amos identifies the source of his message. This message of punishment is what God has spoken. It is impossible for a man to ignore such a warning and not proclaim it. Amos responded in fear and gave this unpopular prophecy. Now he calls on the nation to respond in fear. The context implies (3:6) that this fear is a trembling before the almighty power of God which determines each person’s destiny. In later chapters he will call for a fuller response. At this point Amos is calling on the people to take the first step and accept the fact that God has announced the judgment of Israel.

Theological Development

In the Near Eastern world it was commonly believed that all events were causally related. If Ur was destroyed by an enemy, the gods were angry (ANET, 455); if there was a victory in war, the gods brought it about. Babylonian records indicate that every event was significant. The shape of rising smoke could predict the future, the behavior of wild animals were omens of good or bad fortune, and the appearance of the stars and the shape of the moon affected one’s fate. Israel also looked for and saw cause-and-effect relationships between events. God was not a theological abstraction that had no contact with or power over the history of natural and human events.54

As people gain financial security, social acceptance, status, political independence, and greater pleasure, their need for dependence on God tends to evaporate. Religion can become a dead acceptance of traditions. The maintenance of the social and political status quo can soon replace the theological implications that true faith has. A person’s concept of responsibility before God and neighbor can be perverted because God no longer affects the events of daily life. Although everyone knows that every effect has a cause, the time delay between an act and its effect can deceive some into forgetting this basic law of life.

Tradition taught that Israel was elect (2:10; 3:2). God elected and redeemed his people from Egypt (2:9–10; 3:1), but Amos announced a contrary message of punishment and destruction (2:13–16; 3:2). This paradoxical reaction by God is fundamentally rejected by Amos’ audience because it is contrary to their orthodoxy. This happened because their orthodoxy eliminated the dynamic of a trusting relationship with God and substituted a static non-relational guaranteed benefit based on covenant promises of blessing. In order to persuade his audience, Amos first redefines the rational contact between cause-and-effect in nature. After he applies the cause-and-effect principle to God’s action, he concludes by challenging his audience to allow the cause (God’s roar) to have an effect (fear) in their lives (3:8).

Although theology does not always seem to be logical to the unbeliever, rationality is a part of the process that helps people understand the nature of the relationship between God and the world. Although God may seem to act irrationally in grace to elect a favored people, God does not irrationally inspire a prophet to deliver a message of destruction on his chosen people unless there is a cause. In fact, God limits his activity to a prophet’s prior announcement of his action (3:7). Therefore, even the roar of God through the prophet’s mouth is an act of grace that warns Israel of God’s impending judgment. The cause of Amos’ prophecy is God’s roar. Who knowing God’s word can help but proclaim it (3:8)? Only those who do not fear God. Only those whose deadened orthodoxy has removed God from the relational, cause-and-effect world of reality can dare ignore the roar of the lion.[3]
