What is the greatest evidence of your faith? Is it outward piety—how often you pray, go to church, read your Bible, and perform other overtly “Christian” activities? Or perhaps we ought to look for experiential evidence—do God and His Word compel an emotional response from you, or is it simply that you “feel” the Spirit at work in you? No, the best proof of your faith is not found in how you act or how you feel, but in how you love.
Christians must regularly remind themselves that this world is not their home—at least, not yet. From one of our Ask Ligoiner events, John MacArthur encourages us to reorient our perspective in this fleeting life around the promise of the life to come.

The Soul Ripens Until Death
Isaiah 66:24; Matthew 18:8–9; Mark 9:48; 2 Corinthians 5:1; 1 Thessalonians 4:16–18; Jude 7
The soul of man, like the bird in the shell, is still growing or ripening in sin or grace, till at last the shell breaks by death, and the soul flies away to the place it is prepared for, and where it must abide forever.

Desire to Be Very Well What You Are
Proverbs 14:30; Ecclesiastes 5:18; John 21:20–23; 1 Timothy 6:6
Do not sow your desires in another’s garden, but cultivate well your own. Do not desire to be what you are not, but desire to be very well what you are; occupy your thoughts in making that perfect, and in bearing the crosses, little or great, which you will meet.

Marcion of Sinope Teaching
Marcionism is a heresy that is attributed to an early church figure by the name of Marcion of Sinope. Marcion was the son of a bishop and moved to Rome about 135 AD. Marcion, who was denounced by the early church fathers including Justin, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, and Tertullian in the second century, taught a dualistic belief in a distinction between the God of the Old Testament (demiurge) and the God of the New Testament.
In today’s installment of Reformation Charlotte’s False Teacher of the Day series, Andy Stanley, son of former Southern Baptist President, Charles Stanley, and pastor of Northpoint megachurch in Atlanta, GA, takes the spotlight as one of the most prolific and unfruitful false teachers thus far. Stanley is one of the most nocuous false teachers because of his ability to fit within mainstream Evangelicalism. Make no mistake about it, though; Andy Stanly is a ravenous wolf in sheep’s clothing.
“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.” James 1:12
This beatitude comes from Jesus’ brother. He had experienced it and not just taught it! James knew it was worth “hanging in” and “hanging on” when his faith was under attack. He affirmed that God loves us and that he has made incredible promises about what lies ahead for us. He knew that eventually our period of testing would be transformed into a time of great blessing. James wants us to know that God longs to bless us with life! After all, that’s why he sent Jesus. (cf. John 10:10)
Dear LORD and Father, thank you for all those times that you strengthened me when I was under attack and sustained me when I was weary and ready to quit. Write “perseverance” deep within my soul and give me a spirit of tenacity so that I might serve you no matter what the outward circumstances of my life may be. In the mighty name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
I have always been a bit uneasy with James 1:2 where Jesus followers are encouraged to
“consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds…”
When I find things in God’s word that are hard to understand I “camp” on them for a time and ask God to reveal His wisdom.
I taught four sessions at a weekend women’s retreat. One of the sessions included the wise counsel of 2 Corinthians 12: 9 & 10 where Paul tells us the words the Lord spoke to him when he asked about something that was deeply challenging him in his life. The Lord’s reply was, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.”
Paul goes on to say that because of God’s promise to be his strength right in the midst of his weakness, he can “delight in difficulties”!
“Delight in difficulties”! It’s a hard concept to teach especially when there are women listening who have faced difficulties far beyond any I have even come close to.
Yet I know God is not being trite in this. I knew there was a “power tool” for life in this teaching.
I quickly put the “count it all joy” verse and “delight in difficulties” side by side and saw an old truth in a new way …
God is not telling us that He is testing us to see if we will pass the test of faith. Rather He is telling us that the difficulty becomes the opportunity for God’s power to be displayed and for our perseverance to grow. The promise is that as we grow in trusting Him we will “lack nothing”. (James 1:4)
Perhaps it’s a bit like having built a boat, and when the water rises we get the opportunity to test out just how it works and find delight in the buoyancy and security of it.
The difficulty becomes the opportunity for God’s power, and my perseverance in trusting Him, to come together so that I will have all that I need to walk where I need to walk.
It’s pretty amazing stuff.
As I “camped” on these thoughts for a few days the Lord highlighted two other great truths from His word that dovetail with this whole idea of looking at all of life, challenges included, as an opportunity for God to be on display and for our own faith to deepen and mature.
2 Peter 1:3
“His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.”
2 Corinthians 9:8
“And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
Lord God, The challenge is often great to see difficulties as opportunities for Your power. Our own perseverance in trusting You can so easily slip when a new challenge is staring us in the face. Yet that is exactly what You have asked …. that we allow our weak points to become the very entry point of Your strength and power. Today, may our faith flourish and our thankfulness overflow as we face the day. May we rejoice in Your blessings; find Your strength entering in at our point of weakness; and may we receive all that we need to “abound in every good work”. Thank you that You do not call us to “simply survive” or “get by” as so many express today. But You call us to flourish, to find joy and receive Your power in our lives as we persevere in trusting You. You are amazing, Lord. With gratitude we pray this in the strong name of Jesus, amen.

“Controversy Is Either Superfluous or Hopeless”
Hebrews 11:1; 2 Timothy 2:23
Half the controversies in the world are verbal ones; and, could they be brought to a plain issue, they would be brought to a prompt termination. Parties engaged in them would then perceive, either that in substance they agreed together, or that their difference was one of first principles. This is the great object to be aimed at in the present age, though confessedly a very arduous one. We need not dispute, we need not prove—we need but define. At all events, let us, if we can, do this first of all; and then see who are left for us to dispute with, what is left for us to prove. Controversy, at least in this age, does not lie between the hosts of heaven, Michael and his Angels, on the one side, and the powers of evil on the other; but it is a sort of night battle, where each fights for himself, and friend and foe stand together. When men understand what each other mean, they see, for the most part, that controversy is either superfluous or hopeless.

“How Sacred Is This Bread”
Matthew 26:26–29; Mark 14:22–24; Luke 22:19–20; 1 Corinthians 11:24–26
Our true salvation Jesus Christ,
From evil all recalling,
To us the sacred bread has given,
In memory of himself.
O, how sacred is this bread
You alone, O Jesus Christ
Are flesh, food and sacrament
Than which naught greater can be found.

And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. – Ephesians 4:32
Scripture reading: Matthew 18:21-35
Following the reading of the Law in our liturgy is the Assurance of Pardon whereby we are reminded that God is a merciful God, Who in Christ Jesus forgives us all our sins. As it says in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
In like manner, we are commanded to imitate God by forgiving those who acknowledge and confess their sins and ask for our forgiveness. In all such cases, we must forgive. As in the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant, we who are the recipients of God’s mercy, who have been forgiven this enormous debt, must then also forgive others their relatively minor infractions committed against us. Forgiving others is most basic to imitating the very nature of a merciful and forgiving God.
But then, we often find ourselves to be much more like the unmerciful servant in the parable. We’re unforgiving. We hold grudges. We seek revenge. We gossip and slander. And yet, in the Sermon on the
Mount, Jesus warns us about such an unforgiving spirit “But if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” As Christians, we must reflect the forgiving nature of our forgiving God by forgiving others.
Suggestions for prayer
May we imitate the forgiving spirit of our Father in heaven Who in Christ so freely forgives us.

Tuberculosis drug causes “power failure” in ultra-fit cancer cells
Metastatic cancer cells are dangerous, fast-moving cells cancer cells that have spread away from the primary site to other parts of the body where they can give rise to new tumors. These cells have often already survived chemotherapy and radiation treatments which makes tackling them difficult, though scientists continue to learn more about their behavior and how they might be targeted for better outcomes. Leveraging a newfound ability to identify the “fittest” metastatic cancer cells, scientists at the UK’s University of Salford have discovered that an already approved drug can be deployed to cut off their fuel supply, while leaving normal healthy cells unharmed.

Investigators were warned by U.S. officials to avoid opening “Pandora’s box” by pursing the lab-leak theory.
In a recently published article titled “The Lab-Leak Theory: Inside the Fight to Uncover COVID-19’s Origins,” investigative journalist Katherine Eban details how individuals within the U.S. State Department sought to suppress any notion of the coronavirus having originated in a lab in Wuhan, China. Needless to say, the evidence presented of an intentional cover-up by deep state actors (and a complicit Leftmedia) is both compelling and deeply troubling. This scandal exposes the reality that political considerations motivated individuals within the State Department to hide the facts from the American people.
Interviews with more than 40 people, and a review of hundreds of pages of U.S. government documents, including internal memos, meeting minutes, and email correspondence, found that conflicts of interest, stemming in part from large government grants supporting controversial virology research, hampered the U.S. investigation into COVID-19’s origin at every step. In one State Department meeting, officials seeking to demand transparency from the Chinese government say they were explicitly told by colleagues not to explore the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s gain-of-function research, because it would bring unwelcome attention to U.S. government funding of it.
In her lengthly article, Eban, who is clearly on the Left and no fan of Donald Trump, found some significant information: “Thomas DiNanno, former acting assistant secretary of the State Department’s Bureau of Arms Control, Verification, and Compliance, wrote that staff from two bureaus, his own and the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation, ‘warned’ leaders within his bureau ‘not to pursue an investigation into the origin of COVID-19’ because it would ‘open a can of worms’ if it continued.”
And what was this “can of worms”? The answer appears to be the fact that the U.S. government was involved in funding “gain-of-function” research, with some of this funding just happening to go to the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Eban observes, “To one former federal health official, the situation boiled down to this: An institute ‘funded by American dollars is trying to teach a bat virus to infect human cells, then there is a virus’ in the same city as that lab. It is ‘not being intellectually honest not to consider the hypothesis’ of a lab escape.”
DiNanno asserted that the warnings against digging in the wrong places “smelled like a cover-up” and he “wasn’t going to be a part of it.” Well, if it smells like cover-up, then it probably is a cover-up. Tellingly, one of the U.S. officials advising the team investigating the COVID-19 origin back in early 2020 was the director of the State Department’s Biological Policy Staff in the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation, Christopher Park, and he told them “not to say anything that would point to the U.S. government’s own role in gain-of-function research.” And Park’s motive? Back in 2017, he “had been involved in lifting a U.S. government moratorium on funding for gain-of-function research.”
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who back in April of 2020 pointed to “a significant amount of evidence that [COVID-19] came from that laboratory in Wuhan,” appeared to confirm Eban’s investigation. “[NIH] folks were trying to suppress what we were doing at the State Department as well,” he stated Thursday. Furthermore, Pompeo eyed Dr. Anthony Fauci’s role, contending, “To hear Fauci this morning talk about how the Chinese have an interest in us discovering what happened is just crazy talk. The Chinese have a deep interest in covering it up. They have done so pretty darn effectively.” Moreover, Fauci voiced “the exact same theories that the Chinese Communist Party has presented for over a year now,” Pompeo continued. “He implies good faith for the Chinese Communist Party: We are on the 32nd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square [incident]. For Dr. Fauci to go out and think the CCP cared that there were people in Wuhan who were dying … is just naive beyond all possible imagination.”
Actually, as Pompeo well knows, it’s not naivety at all but rather Fauci’s calculated decision to cover up his possible involvement in helping to fund gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab that almost certainly unleashed a global pandemic responsible for the deaths of millions.
Migrants are suffering and dying, which by the Left’s standards is Biden’s fault.
Brian Mark Weber
When Donald Trump was president, the media relentlessly and falsely criticized him and his administration for creating a border crisis.
Time magazine’s infamous fake news cover back in 2018 featured photographs of a crying two-year-old girl from Honduras looking up at a stern, heartless President Trump. Other media outlets attempted to make those Barack Obama-era cages look like Trump’s holding pens for migrant children. When a father and his daughter drowned crossing the Rio Grande? It was Trump’s fault for denying people asylum.
The message was crystal clear: Trump was directly responsible for breaking up migrant families and treating them inhumanely, and people were dying because of his policies.
The child in that iconic Time cover was never alone. She was crying at the sight of Border Patrol officers questioning her mother after illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. Again, the cages were Obama’s and even some of the photos were from during his presidency. And rather than wait on their asylum application, the father impatiently tried swimming across the Rio Grande.
Nonetheless, the media would stop at nothing to make sure every single lost child or dead migrant was somehow blamed on Trump.
In reality, those same Trump policies were far more humane, as they didn’t give migrants the incentive in the first place, and thereby didn’t place their lives in danger.
President Joe Biden decided to take a different approach, but he didn’t even wait until after his inauguration.
In fact, it was during his campaign for president when Biden called for the very border surge the media currently ignores, effectively announcing to anyone in Mexico, Central America, or abroad that the border between the United States and Mexico would be wide open under his administration.
In response to a question posed by Jorge Ramos of Univision asking why Latinos should trust Biden as president, he replied, “I would in fact make sure that there is, that we immediately surge to the border — all those people are seeking asylum. They deserve to be heard.”
As columnist John Kass writes, “Desperate migrants heard his call as a promise that his arms would be as wide open as our southern border. His wish came true. Now Biden owns it. All of it.”
Kass adds, “Biden immediately stopped construction on the border walls and began to unravel and end Trump administration policy that kept the border better contained. The most significant of these changes was Biden ending the Trump administration ‘Remain in Mexico’ order that kept migrants from rushing the border while they appealed for amnesty status. All that ended. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that this year the U.S. is on pace to see more illegal border crossings than it has seen in 20 years.”
It’s not that the Biden people didn’t know this would happen. Former acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf was just one of many who warned the incoming Biden administration about what would happen if it dismantled Trump’s policies overnight.
While Democrats celebrate the surge, safely hiding from behind fences and troops surrounding the U.S. Capitol, people are dying at the border. And it’s time to lay blame where it belongs: at the feet of Joe Biden and his AWOL “border czar” Kamala Harris.
There’s hardly a day that goes by without another tragedy involving migrants attempting to reach the United States, encouraged by a president who told them to run for the border but didn’t give a damn about what would happen to them once they got here.
The stories include a capsized boat in which 10 Cuban migrants drowned, and separate crashes involving vehicles filled with migrants near the border. One estimate puts the number of migrant deaths this year at 100. Throw in the fact that illegal aliens have contributed to soaring rates of crime and violence in towns and cities across the country, and we’ve got a real crisis.
Except Democrats and their sycophants in the media won’t admit there’s a crisis. They’ll continue blaming Trump, ignoring reality, and standing by while more migrant children and their families lose their lives.
This is yet another prime example of Democrats claiming to care about the downtrodden while creating situations that place them in harm’s way. Then they have the gall to blame everyone else for the all-too-predictable results.
Google and Facebook fail the simple test of having a consistent policy on hate speech.
We live in a nation where arguably offensive things someone said umpteen years ago are grounds for canceling that person now. Jobs are lost, credibility is destroyed, and an Orwellian two minutes of hate is allowed against the offender, all because of exposure of the kinds of intemperate things many folks say in their weaker moments.
Yet some kinds of hate speech are, to borrow more Orwell, more equal than others.
“If I Were a Jew” was the title of a recently rediscovered blog post written way back in 2007 by Kamau Bobb, a black man who until this week was the head of Google’s “diversity team.” In that post, written on a blog he still maintains but while he was a research associate at Georgia Tech, Bobb wrote that if he were Jewish he’d “be concerned about my insatiable appetite for war and killing in defense of myself.”
“If I were a Jew today, my sensibilities would be tormented,” he wrote. “I would find it increasingly difficult to reconcile the long cycles of oppression that Jewish people have endured and the insatiable appetite for vengeful violence that Israel, my homeland, has now acquired.”
Upon discovery, he apologized, saying, “What was intended as a critique of particular military action fed into anti-Semitic tropes and prejudice.” One wonders if the word “black” had been substituted for “Jewish” whether he might have understood that he didn’t “feed into” anything; he clearly articulated and advocated those tropes.
A mild form of cancellation came Thursday, when Google announced that Bobb was a little too “diverse” for its diversity team, so he has been reassigned elsewhere in the company. Not fired, mind you, just shuffled. Why was he hired for that post in the first place? As Meghan McCain joked, “They’re Google. They should have googled him.”
Perhaps Facebook will do better. Or not.
The social media site that relentlessly demotes conservative or “unapproved” views about any number of subjects, resulting in real economic damage to conservative people and brands, regularly allows anti-Semitic posts of even worse nature than Bobb’s.
Well, sort of.
During the recent Hamas-fueled violence in Israel and Palestinian-controlled areas, The Jerusalem Prayer Team’s Facebook page — liked by 77 million people — was massively spammed. “On [a] single day, we received over 800,000 comments, the overwhelming majority of which were very negative, often crude, and anti-Semitic,” said JPT spokesman Michael Vaughn. Many posts included Nazi images and propaganda. “Clearly, this was not random. Someone somewhere was orchestrating this barrage.”
Facebook didn’t seem to have a problem with the people posting those comments, at least not until two days later when, Vaughn said, “With no notice, no attempt to reach us, Facebook told us they had unpublished our JPT Facebook, citing this was due to the page being spam and violating their policies.”
Just to clarify, Facebook punished the Jewish group for anti-Semitic hatred directed its way.
Even the left-of-center Anti-Defamation League has pleaded with Facebook to correct this widespread problem. As the group wrote in a letter, “Facebook’s inaction has helped spread hatred of Jews and has contributed to historical high levels of antisemitism in America and antisemitism online and offline across the globe.”
For social media companies that are part of the increasingly anti-Semitic Democrat Party’s power structure, this hatred is a feature, not a bug.
The “fake news” network has been hemorrhaging viewers ever since Donald Trump left office.
Schadenfreude is a fine German word, a word that only the Germans could’ve invented. Think about it: Who else but our Teutonic friends — pillagers of Rome, runners-up in two world wars, creators of both the Mercedes-Benz and the Trabant — could’ve conjured up a word to capture the malicious pleasure we take from another’s misfortune?
The word is as literal as can be, with schaden meaning “damage” and freude meaning joy.
We mention all this because we’re feeling fairly freude this morning, with word of CNN’s schaden. The latest Nielsen TV ratings are out, and they indicate that “The Most Trusted Name in [Fake] News” has taken a colossal viewership hit. Indeed, the network’s ratings have dropped nearly 70% since Donald Trump left office.
Who knew it was even possible to lose 70% of one’s viewers and still look a prospective advertiser square in the eye?
The Leftmedia’s Bête Orange goeth, and he taketh CNN with him.
Truth be told, CNN lost just 67% of its total viewers. But we tend to round up here in our humble shop, especially when it suits us. And besides, the network lost a full 71% of its sheep in the all-important 25-54 age demographic, for both daytime and prime time, so there’s that.
In case you’re wondering, the other Trump-deranged network didn’t fare much better. As the Daily Caller’s Jordan Lancaster reports:
CNN’s drop in viewers is larger than its competitors, but all major cable news shows have experienced a drop. MSNBC had the second-largest drop in viewership since January, losing 49% of its total viewership between January and May. In the 25-54 age demographic, the network lost 63% of its viewers. During primetime hours, MSNBC lost 42% of its total viewers and 58% of viewers between the ages of 25 and 54. Fox News had the least substantial drop out of all networks, losing 12% of its total viewers and 15% of viewers between the ages of 25-54 between January and May.
On the bright side — or, rather, the less dark side — CNN’s total daytime viewership fell by just 22% in May compared to April, although it fell 28% among that coveted 25-54 cohort.
If you’re keeping score, Fox News continued to clobber the competition in prime time, with four of the five top-rated cable shows: “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” “Hannity,” “The Five,” and “The Ingraham Angle.”
Who knew that with Donald Trump out of the White House, and having been yanked off of Twitter and Facebook, the mainstream networks would be forced to cover the current presidential administration, and their ratings would plummet?
Who knew? Well, longtime lefty journalist Ted Koppel for one. “CNN’s ratings would be in the toilet without Donald Trump,” he said. And how right he was.
With each depressing day of the Biden administration, we’re reminded of how many things former President Donald Trump was right about. An incomplete list would surely include the COVID-19 lab leak, the China travel ban, Operation Warp Speed, hydroxychloroquine, deregulation, gaining energy independence, building the wall, toughening our asylum policy, tearing up the Iran nuke deal, keeping 5G away from the ChiComs, smashing ISIS, and, like Ted Koppel, predicting the Leftmedia’s ratings collapse when he left office.
“Newspapers, television, all forms of media will tank if I’m not there,” said Trump way back in 2017.
How gloriously right he was. And how sweet it is. Still, had the mainstream media merely played it straight in its coverage of our 45th president, he’d still be in office. And our country would be in far better shape. And CNN would still be able to make payroll.
The Washington Post blames the pandemic, not BLM’s anti-police violence, for rising crime rates.
Violent crime has been spiking across the nation’s largest metro areas over the past year. That much isn’t even news anymore. But also for much of last year, the Leftmedia willfully downplayed the growing violence and rioting associated with Black Lives Matter and antifa thuggery with infamous euphemisms like “mostly peaceful protests.” Given that Donald Trump is no longer president, is it possible that could change? Don’t count on it.
Crime really spiked after the death of George Floyd, a career criminal who was lionized by BLM and used to justify painting all police departments across the country as racist. Leftist politicians were quick to cater to the emotive and absolutely irrational demands of these “anti-racists” with their “defund the police” rhetoric. What these radical leftist groups already had in common was a deep dislike of police, a position BLM justified with its dubious “systemic racism” charge.
Meanwhile, as police across the country were continually attacked for simply doing their jobs, police departments began pulling back from policing some of the most crime-ridden neighborhoods, and the predictable result is that crime rates have spiked. It’s about as easy a cause-and-effect case as one can imagine, yet the Leftmedia continues to feign bewilderment as to the cause behind the rising violence.
Case in point is the Washington Post, from which many other media outlets take their cues. The Post recently ran a couple of articles “wrestling” with the reality of rising crime. One article is titled, “A county, hit by the pandemic, grapples with soaring crime after spending a decade lowering it.” The Post notes that in Prince George’s County, Maryland, murders are up nearly double the rate of last year and that “for the first time in a long time, lawmakers say, residents are once again citing safety as a top concern.”
To what does the Post attribute the rising crime? Well, the Leftmedia rag wasn’t about to suggest that BLM’s “defund the police” demands or reduced policing had anything to do with it. No, the Post blames “the pandemic, historic unemployment, and ebbing social services.”
This one story is like a thousand others because, for the Leftmedia, preserving the “systemically racist police” narrative is more important than telling the truth about what is directly causing the sudden rise in crime. When society is deemed at fault for the actions of individuals, then the blaming of societal institutions, such as the police, will always be the go-to scapegoat.
Our nation’s two-tiered justice system is on full display with the treatment of these political protesters.
They keep calling it “The People’s House,” but it’s not — at least not anymore. The National Guard may finally be gone, but the U.S. Capitol is now Nancy Pelosi’s House, Chuck Schumer’s House, Joe Biden’s House. And it has been since January 6.
But worse than that, the Capitol is now a symbol of both elitism and two-tiered justice: elitism on the part of our elected representatives, who don’t give a rip when real rioting comes to our inner cities and leaves real businesses and real people in ruins, but who head for the fainting couch when an unarmed non-insurrection comes to their neck of the woods; and two-tiered justice for the dozens of pro-Trump Capitol protesters, who’ve been languishing in a DC-area jail for months while waiting to be tried for crimes ranging from the petty to the semi-serious, while the authentic thugs of antifa and Black Lives Matter simply skate away from their criminality without any accountability.
Remember last year, when those easily identifiable vandals yanked down or otherwise defiled one statue after another all across America? Or burned and looted and rioted in one urban center after another? Remember when those Portland hoodlums assaulted federal officers and tried to burn down a federal courthouse? Right, then, off ya go.
Investigative journalist Julie Kelly has written compellingly about the January 6 detainees, whose punishment for having protested the results of the 2020 presidential election is Job One for Joe, Nancy, and Attorney General Merrick Garland. “So far,” she writes, “more than 400 people have been arrested in the nationwide manhunt with more charges to come, and at the same time, emerging evidence proves law enforcement allowed protestors to enter and remain in the building.”
We wonder: How strong is the trespassing case — which is what most of these cases are — when law enforcement doesn’t attempt to stop the trespassers from trespassing? And are there really no more pressing matters than this for our Department of Justice? Is there really nothing more important than to make the harshest example possible of a disorganized mob of pro-Trump protesters?
Apparently not. As the Daily Wire reports, “The U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., has called in prosecutors from … the Violent Crime Narcotics Trafficking Section, Homicide Section, Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section, Sex Offense and Domestic Violence Section, and Major Crimes Section. In some cases the prosecutors from those departments are prosecuting misdemeanors only.”
Imagine the stuck-pig squealing we’d have heard if John Durham had enlisted the help of such heavy hitters to prosecute his Russia collusion investigation. Does anyone doubt that FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith would’ve gotten just a slap on the wrist for the very real crime of having falsified evidence for a FISA warrant to spy on a sitting U.S. president? That’s two-tiered justice: one standard for the Left and another for the Right.
As Politico reported on April 19, most of the protesters who were arrested have since been released to await their trials, “but dozens of those deemed to be dangerous, flight risks or at high risk of obstructing justice were ordered held without bond [and] placed in so-called restrictive housing — a move billed as necessary to keep the defendants safe, as well as guards and other inmates.”
“Restrictive housing” is a euphemism for 23-hour-a-day isolation. But by all means, let’s keep the guards and the hardened criminals safe from those middle-aged, beer-bellied “white supremacists” with the MAGA hats and the Trump flags.
To the everlasting shame of House and Senate Republicans, the issue of the detainees’ treatment has been taken up not by them but by two Senate Democrats, Elizabeth Warren and Dick Durbin. Let that sink in.
“Solitary confinement is a form of punishment that is cruel and psychologically damaging,” Warren said in an interview. “And we’re talking about people who haven’t been convicted of anything yet.” Warren rightly believes they’re being punished into cooperation. Durbin says solitary confinement should be “a rare exception” with “clear justification.”
So just where are all those Republicans? Those constitutional conservatives? When Big Government statists like Warren and Durbin are stronger champions of their political opponents’ constitutional rights than the entire GOP caucus, something’s wrong. Really wrong. Disgracefully wrong.
Most of the detainees have no criminal record, and yet, as Kelly writes, “The jail allows them to leave their cells for an hour a day. Religious services are not allowed; they can’t exercise and access to personal hygiene such as showers is nearly nonexistent, according to defense lawyers and relatives I’ve spoken with.”
How are these not the sort of “cruel and unusual punishments” forbidden by the Constitution’s Eighth Amendment? And where’s the “speedy and public trial” as guaranteed by the Constitution’s Sixth Amendment?
These people aren’t killers. They’re political protesters. They don’t believe Joe Biden got all 81 million of those votes on the up-and-up, and they certainly don’t believe that this flawed election was properly investigated and adjudicated. And for those beliefs, the Democrats want to punish them, cruelly and unusually. That’s the real Capitol offense.
Joe Biden called the January 6 riot “the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.” It’s a claim that’s both laughable and shameful. And let’s remember: The only person killed during that “deadly insurrection” was 35-year-old Ashli Babbitt, an unarmed 14-year Air Force veteran who was shot by a still-unnamed Capitol policeman.
Where’s the justice in that? And where’s the justice in any of this?

Insight: “The battle for the world is the battle for definitions.” —Thomas Szasz (1920-2012)
Political futures: “Why do Democrats remain so fearful of Trump? Remember these numbers: 4, 6, 8 and 12. In 2008, when Barack Obama got elected, his Republican opponent received 4% of the Black vote. When Obama won reelection, the Republican got 6% of the Black presidential vote. When Trump ran in 2016, he received 8% of the Black vote. When Trump ran for reelection in 2020, Republicans received 12% of the Black vote, a 50% increase over the previous four years. Republicans haven’t reached that percentage of the Black vote since 1980, when President Ronald Reagan got 14%. Quite simply, this 4%, 6%, 8%, 12% trendline gives Democrats nightmares.” —Larry Elder
Observations: “Behind fancy slogans about not wasting crises, teachable moments and resets is the panic-porn reality that these initiatives are not popular in normal times because they defy common sense. If Americans tried Obama’s economics with their family budgets, they would go broke or go to jail after piling up unpaid debts. Only elites, with their private security guards and the money and influence to remain safe, talk of defunding the police. Few of the woke elites who fly their carbon-spewing jets into Davos ever fly economy class. … Many members of the left-wing elite became wealthy by monetizing their political careers through lucrative insider networking. A cynic might conclude they didn’t go full reset until they first got filthy rich — allowing them not to live like, think like or listen to the rest of us.” —Victor Davis Hanson
Food for thought: “Joe Biden was right about one thing Tuesday in his speech to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1921 attack on a Tulsa black community. Remembering this tragic event should have happened sooner. Why didn’t Barack Obama do it?” —Gary Bauer
Re: Race bait: “Biden said the U.S. intelligence community has concluded that white supremacy represents the greatest domestic threat to our homeland. If they really believe that they should be fired. This is one of the most racially diverse countries in the world. We are the only majority white country that has elected a black president. On the very day Biden engaged in his racial demagoguery, thousands of people of color crossed our border. Yet we are supposed to believe they are risking everything to come to a country of white supremacists? In Biden’s America it is still 1619. Or maybe it is 1850? Or is it the era of Jim Crow laws? There is no progress. No Martin Luther King. No civil rights movement. No integration. If Biden was right the whole country should take a knee when our national anthem is played.” —Gary Bauer
