September 1 Evening Quotes of The Day

His Cross Is a Sweet Burden
Matthew 11:30; 27:32; Mark 15:21; Luke 14:27; 23:26

His cross is the sweetest burden that I ever bore; it is such a burden as wings are to a bird, or sails are to a ship, to carry me forward to my harbor.

Overcome Heretics with Books, Not Fire
2 Corinthians 10:3–5; 2 Peter 2:1–3; Jude 3–4

We should overcome heretics with books, not with fire, as the old Fathers did. If there were any skill in overcoming heretics with fire, the executioner would be the most learned doctor in the world; and there would be no need to study, but he that could get another into his power could burn him.

Mark of Divine Approval — VCY America

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. (James 1:12)

Yes, he is blessed while he is enduring the trial. No eye can see this till he has been anointed with heavenly eye salve. But he must endure it and neither rebel against God nor turn aside from his integrity. He is blessed who has gone through the fire and has not been consumed as a counterfeit.

When the test is over, then comes the hallmark of divine approval—”the crown of life.” As if the Lord said, “Let him live; he has been weighed in the balances, and he is not found wanting.” Life is the reward: not mere being, but holy, happy, true existence, the realization of the divine purpose concerning us. Already a higher form of spiritual life and enjoyment crowns those who have safely passed through fiercest trials of faith and love.

The Lord hath promised the crown of life to those who love Him. Only lovers of the Lord will hold out in the hour of trial; the rest will either sink or sulk, or slink back to the world. Come, my heart, dost thou love thy Lord? Truly? Deeply? Wholly? Then that love will be tried; but many waters will not quench it, neither will the floods drown it, Lord, let Thy love nourish mine to the end.

Take Your Cue from Fear and Trust God — Daily Devotionals by Thoughts about God

I spent the first eight and a half years of my life in the beautiful state of Alaska.  My family lived fifty miles from the nearest town and a mile down a dirt road, off the Alaska Highway.  We had those old crank phones.  We never locked our doors.  About the only thing I feared was coming up on a bear while playing in the woods.  It truly was a wonderful place to grow up!

However, that all changed when we packed up our belongings and moved to California.  We settled into a tiny home on a busy street with cars roaring up and down at all hours of the day and night.  I would awaken in the night, gripped with fear thinking someone had invaded our house only to realize it was just the furnace coming on.

My world was turned upside down.

Fear stalked me like a lion seeking prey, ready to pounce at any moment. It was a paralyzing terror that threatened to overwhelm me, especially in the dark hours of the night.

One day my mom shared a verse with me to encourage me in my struggle and it became my hope.

“. . .  When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.”  Psalm 56-3

I would lay in my bed, saying this verse over and over and over.  Hoping that it would magically remove the fear in my heart and let me sleep.  Even though I quoted this verse endlessly, it never quite seemed to work.  My fear was just as palpable as before.

I thought those words were magic.  That if I said them in just the right way, with just the right inflection than my fear would be gone.   I believed that these were the code words to release me from my fear.

God’s words aren’t “magic”  they are TRUTH.

I was missing something and that “something” was my action.  It’s not enough just to say the words over and over.  I needed to replace my fear with Trust.  I needed to believe it, act on it, and live it.

Trust takes practice.  It’s hard work and it never comes easy.
It’s easy to fear.  It’s easy to take control.  It’s easy to be self-focused.

A few years ago, I once again, found myself living in world of fear with my children.  I was consumed with anxiety over what they were doing and what they would become.  The more control I took the more out of control I felt.  I was overwhelmed.  In that place of fear, God asked me to surrender them to Him; to let go of the control and trust Him.  As I pried my fingers off the lives of my children and learned to release them to Him, God filled me with His perfect peace.

Over the years, I have had to surrender them over and over to the God who loves them even more than I do.  It hasn’t been easy.  Truthfully, it’s been a lot of hard work because I have a tendency to take them back again and again.  But as I’ve worked on this area of trust, it has gotten easier, and I respond quicker.

Once again, I’m faced with dread as my son heads off to the military.  I can let fear invade my life and stalk me like a lion or I can choose to Trust.

I know that in the upcoming months it will be easy to let fear raise its ugly head in life.  But fear is God’s reminder to me to trust Him.

I no longer need to quote words from the Bible with my fingers crossed hoping that they work.  I choose to take God at His word and trust Him with my children, my life and my salvation.

How about you?  Are you living in a world of fear?

Are you LIVING by trust or by anxiety and worry?

Let fear be your cue to TRUST!

September 1 Afternoon Quotes of The Day

“Believing Does Not Come by Trying”
1 Thessalonians 5:9; 2 Timothy 2:10; 3:15

Believing does not come by trying. If a person were to make a statement of something that happened this day, I should not tell him that I would try to believe him. If I believed in the truthfulness of the man who told the incident to me and said that he saw it, I should accept the statement at once. If I did not think him a true man, I should, of course, disbelieve him; but there would be no trying in the matter. Now, when God declares that there is salvation in Christ Jesus, I must either believe Him at once, or make Him a liar.

Why Charge Ourselves with the Burdens of Others?
Matthew 7:1–5; Luke 6:37, 41–42; Romans 14:4, 10, 13; 1 Corinthians 4:5; 5:12–13; Galatians 6:5; James 4:11–12; 5:9

It is enough for each to bear his own burden; why then do we busy ourselves with the conduct of others? Why charge ourselves with a burden heavier than we can bear?

Veritas? No Surprise Harvard Hires Atheist ‘Chaplain’ — David Fiorazo

Veritas. Truth. Harvard University had a dilemma when Puritan colonists settled in New England in the 1600s. How would they ensure that the church, pastors and clergymen, would be literate and strong in the Christian faith? The solution was to open a school to educate leaders.

Named after its founder, Pastor John Harvard, every president of the school for the first seventy years was a minister. So to hear news that the new head of chaplains at Harvard is an atheist has caused both controversy and confusion. And yet, it is not surprising.

So now, atheist, Greg Epstein, author of the book, Good Without God, and who has served as Harvard’s humanist chaplain since 2005, is the new chief University Chaplain. In his new role, he will lead 30 to 40 chaplains who represent 20 different religions, spiritual, and ethical traditions.

What could go wrong? A prominent humanist who does not believe in God, the Bible, or moral absolutes, is head chaplain. This is a total contradiction in both purpose and logic. Bible-believing Christians are to live for the one, true living God!

1 Corinthians 8:5-6 states:

For even if there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords, yet for us there is only one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.

Epstein is quoted as saying things like,

“We don’t look to a god for answers, we are each other’s answers.”

Talk about a moral relativistic recipe for disaster. And according to reports, his election to the post was reportedly unanimous. What happened to Harvard? The same thing that has happened at most public universities.

First, humanism is a philosophy that rejects God and the supernatural, placing man as the center of life, reason, and meaning. It too, is a religion, but one for a New Age. Check out what another humanist, John Dunphy wrote in a 1983 edition of Humanist magazine:

I am convinced that the battle for humankind’s future must be waged and won in the public school classroom by teachers who correctly perceive their role as the proselytizers of a new faith… teachers must embody the same selfless dedication of the most rabid fundamentalist preacher, …utilizing a classroom instead of a pulpit to convey humanist values in whatever subject they teach, regardless of the educational level – preschool, daycare, or large state university.

The classroom must and will become an arena of conflict between the old and the new – the rotting corpse of Christianity, together with all its adjacent evils and misery, and the new faith of humanism, resplendent in its promise of a world in which the never-realized Christian ideal of “love thy neighbor” will finally be achieved.

Harvard University was founded as Harvard College in 1636. Its stated purpose was: “To train a literate clergy.” Among its mottos were, “Veritas Christo et Ecclesiae” which is translated, Truth for Christ and Church (see logo),’ and “In Christam Gloriam” (to the glory of Christ).

But by the mid-1800’s, they removed Christ and the Church from it’s shield, leaving only one word’ Veritas. But whose “veritas” is it if Jesus is removed, and for what purpose?

Apparently, the role of the new atheist, humanist “chaplain” is to coordinate the campus’ Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist and assorted other religious communities. But the new president, 44-year-old Epstein, does not identify with any traditional religions.

Now, he can be or believe whatever he wants. But many are wondering how an atheist can be a university chaplain? Our culture has redefined truth. Are we also redefining what it means to be a chaplain now?

According to one military website,

“The chaplain’s responsibilities include performing religious rites, conducting worship services, providing confidential counseling and advising commanders on religious, spiritual and moral matters…”

How can you conduct a worship service if there is no God to worship? Let’s reason here. If you don’t believe in God, you cannot do any of these duties – that is if you keep the formerly universal understanding of chaplain.

This move creates confusion and more questions than provides answers. How can you perform religious rites, all of which presuppose the existence of a deity, if there is no deity and man is his own god?

To whom do you pray? What hope can you offer hurting or dying people regarding the problems of this life and the world to come?

As worldly philosophies such as collectivism and secular humanism expanded in universities across America, compromises and sacrifices were made.

How sad to acknowledge that the earliest established colleges in the U.S. were once saturated with Christian influence and instruction. Believers in Christ had a strong, positive, moral influence on culture, and the freedom to practice as well as to proclaim their faith.

In fact, a founding inspirational verse Harvard followed was John 17:3 which states,

This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

The once Christian-based University gradually caved to the cult of liberalism and was hijacked by Unitarian Universalists in the 1800s. Cultural Marxism did the rest. Just look at recent history.

  • In 2015, students were able to register using “gender-free” pronouns.
  • In 2017, Harvard released a student guide suggesting gender can change from day to day, and for those who disagree, they went so far as to claim, “Transphobic misinformation is a form of systemic violence.”
  • In 2018, a Christian group at Harvard was accused of discrimination for – ready – believing in the teachings of the Bible and striving to live by its standards.

“Harvard College Faith and Action” was placed on probation after asking one of its leaders to step down for being in an open same-sex relationship. Adhering to biblical standards however, violates the Student Organization Policy Guide. The student paper also accused the same Christian group of hate and homophobia for giving a platform to a former lesbian who converted to Christianity.

  • In 2019, a Harvard Crimson survey of the university’s 2019 class found that students were two times more likely to identify as agnostic or as atheist than average 18-year-olds.

More than a fifth, 21.3% of the class said they were agnostic and 16.6% said they were atheist. Those having the audacity to identify as Protestant were around 17%. But if you understand the history of Ivy League colleges, this decline of truth, religion and spirituality is as telling as it is tragic.

Great Americans like John Hancock, Sam Adams, John Adams, and John Quincy Adams graduated from Harvard. In fact, Harvard’s “Rules and Precepts” once included the following:

“Let every student be plainly instructed and earnestly pressed to consider well, the main end of his life and studies is to know God and Jesus Christ, which is eternal life (John 17:3) and therefore, to lay Christ… as the only foundation of all sound knowledge and learning…”

The very institution that presupposed education be based on Scripture, the starting point for wisdom and knowledge, removed Christ and the Church from its mission.

The Bible is the source of truth and Psalm 117:2 says “The truth of the Lord is eternal.” His word stands forever and the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge.

Founder of Answers in Genesis, Ken Ham, explained that although Greg Epstein claims to be devoid of all religion, just the opposite is true.

What Jesus said describes the situation here, “they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit” (Matthew 15:4). The article about this atheist, now heading up the chaplains at Harvard University, states: “The chaplains argue that as a man with no clear religious affinity…” That’s a load of nonsense. This man is an atheist–that’s his religion. He has a belief system, a worldview. He believes all life is a result of naturalism. He believes man determines his own morality, and his own “purpose” & “meaning” in life.

This should be a warning to the small number of remaining schools who have not yet fully compromised their biblical values and principles. Harvard justifies its decision by saying an atheist like Epstein was a good choice “due to young people’s increasing lack of religiosity.”

So, give kids what they want instead of what they need? This has only led to decay and death. The Bible teaches that the wisdom of this present world is foolishness to God (1 Cor. 3:18). Naturally, the Harvard Catholic Center and the Harvard Christian Alumni Society have come out in defense of the decision to elect an atheist as president of its chaplains.

Finally, Psalm 14:1 is quite clear on this truth:

The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”

And 1 Corinthians 3:19 states:

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the sight of God.

Once again, this is about worldview, and it all comes down to three words: God or man?

IN TODAY’S DIGEST

FEATURED ANALYSIS

Biden Defends His Well-Planned Afghanistan Disaster

Everything that went wrong can be blamed on Trump and the Afghans, he explained.

Nate Jackson

Upon the last American soldier leaving Afghanistan after nearly 20 years, the commander-in-chief gave a speech in which he took credit for what he called “the right decision, a wise decision, and the best decision for America,” all while he also blamed his predecessor for the fact that none of those descriptors are actually true. Seven months in, that’s Joe Biden’s presidency in a nutshell.

Among the many lies Biden told was that he was somehow hamstrung by Donald Trump’s deal to withdraw American troops by May 1. The very change of date to August 31 belies that claim, but so does the fact that Biden immediately set about to undo everything he possibly could from Trump’s four-year term. Why was the Afghanistan deal the singularly unique Trump action that handcuffed Biden?

Another big lie was to implicitly blame Trump for the haphazard and deadly manner in which the withdrawal was conducted — a disastrous withdrawal that Biden also insisted went exactly as planned.

Despite its flaws, Trump’s deal at least included conditions for withdrawal, and there’s no chance on God’s green earth that Trump would have allowed America, the nation he demonstrably loves so much, to suffer the gross humiliation that Biden has put us through. No American had died in Afghanistan in 18 months. Yet Biden’s dereliction of duty set the stage for 13 brave Americans to be killed during our retreat, and all he did in response was look at his watch while receiving their remains and lob a few missiles at some ostensibly “high value” targets — some of whom were reportedly a family with visas to leave.

Early in his remarks, Biden said, “In April, I made the decision to end this war.” He later contradicted himself with a false dichotomy: “We were left with a simple decision: Either follow through on the commitment made by the last administration and leave Afghanistan, or say we weren’t leaving and commit another tens of thousands more troops going back to war.”

He argued that was “the real choice,” but that’s a lie. There’s an awful lot of middle ground between surrender and all-out war. And whose decision was it, his or Trump’s? Both, according to Biden.

Biden falsely asserted that August 31 was “not due to an arbitrary deadline” but that the date was “designed to save American lives.” It’s true it wasn’t arbitrary, but only because he hoped to have a symbolic exit ahead of 9/11. As for saving lives, obviously he failed. He also abandoned as many as 200 American citizens in Afghanistan, along with tens of thousands of our Afghan allies — vetted translators and others who served next to American Patriots in uniform, and who deserve a chance to avoid torture and death at the hands of Afghanistan’s new and cruel Taliban masters. Those coming deaths are on his hands.

He explained himself by saying that his administration had been trying for months to get Americans out, and that these people, in many cases dual citizens, didn’t actually want to leave. (On a related note, his administration is as confused as he is. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki recently called it “irresponsible to say Americans are stranded.” Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby, on the other hand, said this is no big deal because Americans “get stranded in countries all the time.”)

Pro tip: If you want to evacuate Americans from a hostile place, maybe don’t abandon an American air base to our enemies before exfiltrating all military personnel. Biden didn’t even bother to secure the capital where the airport was located. According to the Washington Post’s weekend bombshell, the Taliban had offered the U.S. control of Kabul until the evacuation deadline. Biden refused, wanting only to secure the airport — all while reportedly giving the Taliban the names of Americans and Afghans attempting to evacuate. Kabul’s “security” was left in the hands of Khalil Haqqani, a man with a $5 million U.S. bounty on his head because of his connections to al-Qaida. That had deadly results.

As for our allies, Biden’s only comments were to blame them for losing their own country to the Taliban. Biden did not, of course, say a word about how difficult their job was after we pulled all military and contractor support from their defensive efforts.

He claimed to have prepared for even the “eventuality” of a Taliban takeover, while all indications are that Biden and his national security team were taken by surprise at the speed of the Taliban’s advance.

Also enlightening are newly revealed comments he made to then-Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in July: “I need not tell you the perception around the world and in parts of Afghanistan, I believe, is that things are not going well in terms of the fight against the Taliban. And there is a need, whether it is true or not, there is a need to project a different picture.” Projecting a different picture than reality is exactly what his speech was meant to do.

Biden concluded by patting himself on the back for having “honored” his campaign commitment to “end this war.” The problem is that he didn’t end it; he just left the battlefield. Afghanistan will quickly become the same al-Qaida and now ISIS safe haven it was before 9/11, and the war may come back to America’s shores all too soon.

To sum up Biden’s speech, everything he did was exactly right, well-planned, and in America’s best interests, and the whole reason it was a colossal failure and humiliation for our nation is because of the Bad Orange Man and our no-good allies. We many no longer have a president who mean-tweets, but that doesn’t mean we have a class act or able leader in the White House.

Joe Biden Is Not a Gold Star Dad

The commander-in-chief should stop cynically trotting out the memory of his dead son.

Douglas Andrews

“I’m not trying to insult the president,” said Mark Schmitz, “but it just didn’t seem that appropriate to spend that much time on his own son. I think it was all him trying to say he understands grief. … But when you’re the one responsible for ultimately the way things went down, you kind of feel like that person should own it a little bit more.”

Schmitz, the father of Jared Schmitz, a 20-year-old Marine Corps Lance Corporal who was one of 13 warriors killed in last Thursday’s terrorist bombings in Kabul, no doubt blames Joe Biden, at least in part, for his son’s death. And where the president’s habit of invoking the premature death of his own son in 2015 is concerned, Schmitz no doubt spoke for other newly minted Gold Star parents at Dover Air Force Base on Monday.

Beau Biden was 46 when he died of brain cancer in 2015. The oldest of the warriors who died last Thursday, Darin Taylor, was 31; the rest were in their early 20s. Biden lived long enough to marry and have children. One of the 13, Marine Corps Lance Corporal Rylee McCollum, 20, of Jackson, Wyoming, was looking forward to becoming a father this month.

Biden joined the Delaware National Guard in 2003, when he was in his early 30s, which is considerably later than most who serve. Having a law degree, he rose through the Judge Advocate General’s Corps to the rank of major, and his unit was activated for deployment to Iraq in late 2008, by which time hostilities and combat operations had largely ceased. At the time, he was Delaware’s attorney general, and he was awarded the Bronze Star for his JAG work in Iraq. Beau Biden was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013, and upon his death at Walter Reed Medical Center in 2015, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, which is presented “for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.”

In short, Beau Biden lived a rich and full life, albeit a brief one, and he was able to say his goodbyes.

By contrast, the 13 who died in last week’s bombing were brutally snatched from us. They lived tragically, wrenchingly short lives. None of them had reached even a fraction of their life’s potential, and their deaths leave an enormous and irrevocable wound upon their loved ones — a wound that few others can possibly fathom.

Perhaps now we can better understand why Mark Schmitz didn’t want to hear about Beau Biden. The one simply doesn’t equate to the other. As former George W. Bush speechwriter William McGurn put it: “[Biden] bizarrely keeps invoking his son … whose early death from brain cancer was tragic but has nothing to do with Afghanistan, much less the 11 Marines, Navy corpsman and Army soldier killed in Thursday’s suicide bombing. Mr. Biden is not a Gold Star father and should stop playing one on TV.”

Sadly, this isn’t the first time Biden has cynically played the “Beau” card, and it likely won’t be the last.

Last November, our Mark Alexander wrote about candidate Biden’s repeated (and since debunked) attacks on then-President Donald Trump, whom he said had disparaged our World War I veterans during a commemorative event in France in 2018. As Alexander wrote: “Two days before the election, Biden was addressing our nation’s veterans in Philadelphia. He declared, ‘Guess what, man? [Trump] talks about you being losers and suckers. My son Beau Biden … volunteered to go to Iraq for a year. … He was not a loser. He was not a sucker.’”

Thus, as Alexander put it, Biden “used the casket of his deceased son as a soap box.” He did so again on Monday.

In life and in death, Joe Biden has failed these Gold Star families. He compounded and magnified that failure at Dover by focusing more on his own loss than those of the grieving families.

Late last Thursday, when the president finally emerged to address the nation some eight hours after the deadly bombing, he again brought up his son, saying, “We have some sense, like many of you do, what the families of these brave heroes are feeling today.”

No, sir. No you do not.

Biden’s Open Border Is Killing Migrants at Record Rate

The number of dead migrants is on pace to surpass the 2005 high.

Thomas Gallatin

Joe Biden’s open-border policy is predicated on the oft-touted idea that it’s more compassionate than Donald Trump’s wall. By contrast to that wall and the enforcement it symbolized — which indeed was aimed at preventing illegal aliens from entering the country — Biden’s policy has been interpreted as a giant flashing welcome sign. As a result, the number of migrants caught illegally crossing the border has skyrocketed to records not seen in over two decades, as more than 1.4 million people have been detained just since Biden took office.

While Trump’s rhetoric may have been offensive to the Left, his enforcement policies led to decreasing numbers of migrants seeking to make the treacherous journey. Meanwhile, Afghanistan isn’t the only place where people are dying because of Biden’s policies. His “compassionate” rhetoric has ironically led to record numbers of migrants dying in their attempts to illegally cross the southern border.

Since the 2020 election, U.S. Border Patrol has found the bodies of 383 dead migrants, with likely many more unaccounted for in the remote desert regions along the U.S. southern border. Border Patrol notes that if the trend continues, the number of dead migrants is on pace to surpass 2005, the worst year on record. As The Washington Times reports: “August and September, the final two months of the fiscal year, usually account for 22% to 30% of the total. If this year is closer to 30%, then 2021 will end with more deaths than the 492 recorded in 2005.”

The more people that come, the more people will die. Former Border Patrol chief Ronald Vitiello flatly observed: “It’s all based on the volume. We’ve gone to unprecedented heights in attempted entries. There are more people dying on the way, there are more people dying at the border, there’s more risk to the people coming.”

Trump told migrants not to come — not to even try — because they would be turned away. Biden, on the other hand, intentionally ignored the significant distinction between legal and illegal immigration when he falsely implied that Trump was heartlessly opposed to immigration. Biden’s conflation served as an open invitation to migrants to illegally come and seek to enter the U.S. And this disingenuous conflation is costing more migrant lives than Trump’s hardline enforcement policies. Compassion not guided by truth ends in cruelty.

Harvard Breaks Free of Its Roots

The historically Christian university now employs its first atheist chaplain.

Michael Swartz

Founded by the Puritans nearly 400 years ago as an institution to ensure that the clergy serving the nascent Massachusetts Colony would be literate and trained properly, there’s no question that Harvard University’s eventual ascension to become a household name among colleges — a rise that’s built the massive financial endowment it’s been blessed with — would eventually lead it down a path its founders may have decried as far too worldly.

Case in point is the curious but unanimous selection to lead the college’s 40-plus chaplains. It’s a group the school describes as a “professional community … representing many of the world’s religious, spiritual, and ethical traditions, who share a collective commitment to serving the spiritual needs of the students, faculty, and staff of Harvard University.” And it will now be led by Greg Epstein, an atheist who authored a book called Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe.

As The New York Times describes it, though, Epstein was a representative choice. One student described Epstein as a leader who “wasn’t about theology,” but instead brought people together who weren’t necessarily religious. Echoing that sentiment, Epstein told the Times: “We don’t look to a god for answers. We are each other’s answers.” What could go wrong?

Epstein also provides answers for students at MIT, where he fills similar roles. And while he professes to be an atheist, Epstein is ordained as a “Humanist Rabbi,” as designated from the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism. (Nor should it be a surprise that he also served as the national chair of “Humanists for Biden/Harris.”)

While most reading this would dismiss Epstein’s selection as just another sign of the fall of a once-venerable institution that now is more valuable as a cachet than as a truly educational institution, the noteworthy aspect about this story is the acceptance of this selection by the Harvard community with nary a peep of protest, save from outside outlets like ours. Based on mainstream media coverage of Epstein’s selection, people in the Harvard community are just hunky-dory with the choice.

One possible reason for this is revealed in an interview Epstein did with NPR after being chosen. Said Epstein: “A group that I’ve worked with in the past and currently [is] the Secular Student Alliance — it’s a national group of humanist, atheist, and agnostic students around the country. They’ll tell you that their strongest chapters, their biggest presence, is in the Deep South and the other most conservative religious areas of this country because there are enormous numbers of young people who are in those areas who feel oppressed by a lack of inclusion religiously, an overwhelming association between morality and religion, and they are looking for an alternative.”

“Oppressed by a lack of inclusion.” That’s an interesting choice of words for a man who works at a school where nearly four out of 10 incoming students are agnostic or atheist, and barely a third identify as Catholic or Protestant. That trend fairly reflects the balance of the country among that age group. If anyone should be oppressed by a lack of inclusion at Harvard, it would be the conservative Christian student. (Well, them and Asians, but we digress.) Knowing the school’s recent reputation, how many Christians dare apply? And how many of those would be accepted? The choice of Epstein as head chaplain reflects the information silo that Harvard and other Ivy League schools have become.

Kids have bristled at authority for generations, enough so that rebellious teens have been a constant theme of comedy and tragedy for centuries. Recent generations, though, haven’t mastered the concept of growing out of that rebellious stage like most mature people do. Secular humanism is, to a great extent, the logical extension of “turn on, tune in, drop out,” where we believe we are the masters of ourselves. Or, to borrow Barack Obama’s phrasing, the ones we have been waiting for.

As founded, Harvard’s motto was “Truth for Christ and the Church.” Once the institution unmoored itself from biblical truth, however, that motto became obsolete. An atheist chaplain at a formerly Puritan university is just more proof of that.

VA Supreme Court Backs Teacher Against Loudoun County

The school district violated Tanner Cross’s rights by suspending him for objecting to its “transgender” policy.

Thomas Gallatin

Loudoun County elementary school teacher Tanner Cross, who was suspended by the school board for daring to voice his opposition to what was then a proposed “transgender” policy, won his case before the Virginia Supreme Court. The policy in question has since been adopted by the school board. Among other things, it requires teachers to refer to students by their preferred pronouns based upon their declared “gender identity,” irrespective of their biological sex. Cross objected. The school board sought to justify its actions against Cross by claiming that he was not suspended for voicing his opinion but for the “disruption” his views caused. It was a distinction without a difference.

The Virginia Supreme Court rejected the board’s objection to a judge’s previous injunction, deciding that the board had violated Cross’s free speech rights.

While this is indeed a win, this ruling does not negate Loudoun County Public Schools’s “transgender” policy. It does, however, open the door for it to be challenged, which is exactly what Cross’s defense team, the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), is doing. Supporting case law includes the Virginia Supreme Court’s apparent approval of the Sixth Circuit’s decision in Meriwether v. Hartop, in which the court “emphatically held that a university professor stated viable free speech and free exercise claims based on his university’s disciplining him for refusing, based on his Christian faith, to use a student’s preferred pronouns.” Here’s hoping Cross prevails.

In related news regarding gender-bending in public schools, a California teacher is rightly under investigation for encouraging her students to pledge allegiance to the gay pride flag. In a viral social media video, Orange County public school teacher Kristen Pitzen discusses the pledge of allegiance and disparages the American flag, saying it made her “uncomfortable.” She also claimed to have lost her U.S. flag during the state’s COVID lockdown. When a student questioned where the flag was, she claimed not to know and suggested instead that they could pledge allegiance to a gay pride flag hanging on the wall in her classroom.

School district public relations officer Annette Franco noted that the incident is under investigation. “We can tell you that showing respect and honor for our nation’s flag is a value that we instill in our students and an expectation of our employees,” she said. “We take matters like this seriously and will be taking action to address it.”

The irony that this teacher can’t seem to wrap her mind around is the fact that the American flag she disparages represents the nation that affords her the freedom to express and even celebrate views that many find immoral and objectionable. Like so many anti-American leftists, she’s biting the hand that feeds her.

Jen Psaki’s Major Lie

A little lie told back in March tells us all we need to know about the forthrightness of Team Biden.

Douglas Andrews

It’s been said that lies are like cockroaches: For every one you uncover, there are dozens more hiding in the woodwork.

This couldn’t be more true, it seems, than it is for the Biden administration, and for the president’s press secretary, Jen Psaki. She’s a paid liar, and she’s really good at it. To watch her at work is to see a polished, even cold-blooded dissembler, one who lies with conviction and attitude, and with an occasional dose of weapons-grade condescension.

Take the recent kerfuffle about the First Dog, Major, a German Shepherd with a taste for Secret Service agents. As it turns out, Psaki was lying about the extent to which the dog was sinking his teeth into the agents, and we learned about this when the intrepid watchdog group Judicial Watch got its hands on some Secret Service records. Those records indicated that their agents had been bitten every single day from March 1 through March 8.

But that’s not what Psaki shared with the White House press pool at the time, and a reporter has now called her out with a great question: “At a March 9 briefing, you only described one biting incident to us. … Obviously, that is not the world’s most important story, but it is significant, because we expect honest information even for minor stories. … And if we can’t get honest information about minor stories, why should we have faith in the administration’s account for larger issues like Afghanistan?”

Psaki responded with a non-answer bookended by the aforementioned condescension: “I know you do keep the dog in the news in the briefing room, so thank you for that,” she began, and “to be fully transparent in your ongoing interest in the dog,” she concluded.

In short, Jen Psaki is a doggone good liar. And if she’ll lie about a dog, she’ll most definitely lie about the dog’s master, who himself happens to be a serial liar.

Again, this is all small potatoes, but it reminds us of what Thomas Jefferson said about the slippery slope of telling a lie: “It is of great importance to set a resolution, never not to be shaken, never to tell an untruth. there is no vice so mean, so pitiful, so contemptible & he who permits himself to tell a lie once, finds it much easier to do it a second & third time, till at length it becomes habitual, he tells lies without attending to it, & truths without the world’s believing him. this falsehood of the tongue leads to that of the heart, & in time depraves all it’s good dispositions.”

Part IV: Identity in Race

The BLM and CRT movements form an unholy union: the cult of antiracism.

Emmy Griffin

(Editor’s Note: See “Part I: Identity as an American”; “Part II: Identity in Sex — The LGB Activists”; and “Part III: Identity in Gender.”)

America, land of immigrants, the great melting pot of nations, has long been unique in its embrace of multi-ethnicities. Immigrants came to the U.S. seeking to enjoy its freedom in pursuit of the American Dream. This has been held so much as an American ideal that the poem “The New Colossus” by Emily Lazarus is engraved on the very base of the Statue of Liberty.

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

In our history, however, we did not always live up to this. Slaves were brought over to the colonies, and European settlers had a habit of double-dealing with the Native Americans in order to take over the new land. Conquest and slavery make up some of the darkest deeds of our past.

Our nation is not unique in this. This was how new land was claimed and tamed throughout the history of the world. Our country has also taken great strides in a far shorter amount of time toward ratifying these wrongs. Slavery was abolished in 1865 with the adoption of the Thirteenth Amendment. This took us only 90 years to achieve as a country, far more quickly than other nations in history. Some regions, like communist China, parts of the Middle East, and portions of Africa, still have slavery today. For us, this has been a journey of growing and getting better in spite of our imperfect beginnings.

But these sins of our past have become weapons in the hands of new, more insidious, more violent movements — namely, Black Lives Matter (BLM) and Critical Race Theory (CRT). One cannot be mentioned without the other because CRT is the idea that informs and guides the BLM movement.

BLM’s stated goals are to instill a Marxist regime (a.k.a. communism) and to destroy the nuclear family. Its ultimate goal is to use violence and chaos to scare the masses into submitting to their will and to gain political power. It uses unworthy martyrs such as George FloydMichael Brown, and Ma’khia Bryant as stand-ins for the injustice that spurs their movement.

CRT is a theory drenched in Marxism that categorizes people and institutions as oppressed vs. oppressors.

These movements form an unholy union: the cult of antiracism.

The combination of these movements is by far the most dangerous and destructive to the American identity.

BLM and CRT do not respect the Rule of Law. They see it as upholding a white supremacist system and therefore invalid. Ironically, the leaders don’t actually seem to care very much about black lives. Over the summer of 2020, people identifying as members of these groups rioted. They murdered other black people and destroyed and looted black-owned businesses. They call for the defunding of police. They want it defunded, not reformed, because it would bring down an institution they see as upholding racism.

BLM and CRT advocate for a new political system altogether — communism. This governmental machine has failed everywhere it’s been tried. Ultimately, it devolves into a ruling class and oppressed masses. (See Cuba and the USSR for more details.)

They advocate for a lack of Liberty. It is especially evident when you try to debate with a person who adheres to the BLM and CRT worldview. In his book, Fault Lines: The Social Justice Movement and Evangelicalism’s Looming Catastrophe, pastor and teacher Voddie Baucham describes this false dichotomy: “Either you are on the side of the oppressed, or you are 1) shutting down the conversation about racial injustice, 2) ignoring minority voices, and 3) upholding (or internalizing) white supremacy.”

Meritocracy no longer applies in this system. It doesn’t matter what your gifts, talents, or qualifications are. Under these ideologies the only thing that matters is how much of a victim you are and how you should be given “equity” and “recompense” for sins of the past. It doesn’t matter how hard you work in this system. You are only as good as your victimhood status affords. No wonder white teens are turning to anything that would get them out of the most hated category in this ideology.

BLM and CRT advocates are also guilty of using language in a way that is divisive. Again in his book, Voddie Baucham describes it in the context of being a cult.

The antiracist movement has many of the hallmarks of a cult, including staying close enough to the Bible to avoid immediate detection and hiding the fact that it has a new theology and new glossary of terms that diverge ever-so-slightly from Christian orthodoxy. At least at first. In classic cult fashion, they borrow from the familiar and accepted, then infuse it with new meaning. This allows the cult to appeal to the faithful within the dominant, orthodox religions from which it draws its converts.

Here are a few of these new terms, courtesy of Baucham:

  • Whiteness — used to describe the dominant culture (in this case, white skin).
  • Antiracist — one who “does the work” of uncovering and fighting past, present, and future racism.
  • Racist — a construct of a dominant culture, not necessarily referring to an individual but to the institutions that it maintains to keep power.
  • White privilege — unique advantages that are unearned but given to white people because they are white.
  • White supremacy — anything that promotes white privilege.

Notice how all these terms intentionally separate people into categories. You are either good or bad, and almost all of it depends on the color of your skin. If you are white, you are irredeemable, even if you ascribe to being an antiracist.

BLM and CRT ultimately seek to create the world in their own image using notions of “justice” and “equity” to right the wrongs of the past and present. It ultimately boils down to an attempt to create a Marxist nation and advocate for anti-white racism. That is, racism in the traditional sense of hating someone based on the color of their skin. It is everything that the American identity is not. In fact, if this insidious worldview is allowed to gain more traction, we may see a terrible repeating of history.

As the old adage goes, those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.

SHORT CUTS

Insight: “The real rulers in Washington are invisible and exercise power from behind the scenes.” —Justice Felix Frankfurter (1882-1965)

“Talk about a catastrophic success. The Biden administration wants credit for the Afghanistan evacuation as measured by the sheer number of people it flew out amid a security and humanitarian crisis of its own making. This is the arsonist bragging about how many fires he has put out. … That the U.S flew out more than 115,000 people out of Kabul is a testament to the awesome capabilities of the United States military. It is not in any way a vindication of President Biden’s exit.” —Rich Lowry

“It’s hard to imagine any prior American president, perhaps with the exception of Jimmy Carter, abandoning Americans behind enemy lines. Theodore Roosevelt mustered the naval might of the United States to save one American who had been kidnapped in Morocco in 1904. Barack Obama traded five Guantanamo detainees for Bowe Bergdahl in 2014. Even Biden felt the impulse to get every last American out. He pledged to do it in his interview with George Stephanopoulos. In order to keep his promise to the Taliban to get out by August 31, though, he broke his promise to his countrymen.” —Rich Lowry

“At a time when the U.S. needed a strong president, we got a weak and inept politician. At a time when the U.S. needed courageous leadership, we got a bumbling coward. At a time when we needed a truth-teller in the White House, we got a habitual liar. As a result, American military families are grieving, and the blood of their loved ones is on Biden’s hands. … [The president] has negotiated with the Taliban from a position of weakness, on his knees, with their gun held to his head. Not only does the Taliban not fear Biden — they laugh at him. He couldn’t frighten a puppy.” —Oliver North & David Goetsch

“There are many bad people and many bad countries in the world, and only a fear of good countries prevents them from conquering other countries. There is less fear of good countries in the world today than at any time since World War II. And that is especially so because the good countries are preoccupied with their own alleged evils rather than with the world’s real evils.” —Dennis Prager

“My reason for submitting a letter of resignation: A lack of trust and confidence in your ability to lead.” —final line of Marine Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller’s resignation letter

Friendly fire: “Many people I’m speaking to say we are far worse off than we were from the beginning because within a few weeks of launching this war, the Taliban were overthrown, al-Qaeda was scattered. Now, the U.S. is leaving after 20 years with the Taliban in power and the United States having been driven out. It’s a tremendous legacy. … Some have described it as the worst capitulation of Western values in our lifetimes.” —NBC News’s Richard Engel

The BIG Lie: “We have Americans that get stranded in countries all the time.” —Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby

Grand delusions I: “We have considerable leverage over the Taliban.” —National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan

Grand delusions II: “We have enormous leverage over the Taliban.” —White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki

Non compos mentis I: “The U.S. … has our own far religious right dreaming of a theocracy that would impose a particular brand of Christianity, drive women from the workforce and solely into childbirth, and control all politics.” —MSNBC’s Joy Reid

Non compos mentis II: “Always funny to me when [Christians] pretend their religion is somehow less oppressive of women than Islam.” —freelance journalist Michelle Taylor, a.k.a. Feminista Jones

Non compos mentis III: “The Taliban allow no liberty of conscience. They are like #ChristianNationalists and other American Christian fundamentalists.” —Duke University theology professor Curtis Freeman

Non compos mentis IV: “Make no mistake; Christian evangelicals are America’s #taliban and weld [sic] as much power too in their society.” —author John Smith

Non compos mentis V: “The Taliban are as fanatical about their beliefs and culture as the millions of people right here in the U.S. who believe in religion, conspiracy theories, and alternate reality.” —actor Tim Russ

And last… “The President made the decision to trust the Taliban. The President made the decision to set an arbitrary August 31st deadline. The President made the decision to abandon Bagram Air Base. The President made the decision not to expand the perimeter around Karzai International Airport. The President made the decision to undermine our NATO allies. The President made the decision to break our word to our Afghan partners. The President made the decision to tell one lie after another as the crisis unfolded. The President made the morally indefensible decision to leave Americans behind. Dishonor was the President’s choice. May history never forget this cowardice.” —Senator Ben Sasse

This had to be on purpose.

No one can be this inept or stupid.

The Taliban threw a military Victory Parade on Wednesday riding in US military equipment wearing US uniforms with US guns.

This is the Biden-Obama foreign policy — Complete defeat and humiliation by our enemies.

3,000+ Pediatricians, Health Care Workers Sue Biden Over Transgender Mandate — Christian Research Network

“President Biden’s Health and Human Services department is grossly overreaching its authority and, in doing so, putting children’s psychological and physical health in danger. Our clients are rightfully objecting on medical, ethical, religious and conscientious grounds to this unlawful government mandate to provide gender-transition procedures.”

(Human Events)  Pediatricians and other health care workers are suing the Biden administration over a mandate that would require medical professionals to provide gender-related services regardless of any medical objections.

Indeed, any objections, even in terms of treatment on children, would be considered “discrimination.”

As reported by the Daily Wire, the American College of Pediatricians, the Catholic Medical Association, and an OB-GYN doctor who specializes in caring for adolescents filed the lawsuit in federal court. View article →

Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld: Calling Biden’s Evacuation A ‘Success’ Is Like ‘Polishing A Turd’ | LifeZette

On Monday, Fox News personality Greg Gutfeld roasted Biden’s evacuation failures in Afghanistan, saying that pretending the mission was a success was like “polishing a turd.”

Fox’s resident comedian made his remarks on Fox News’ “The Five.”

Gutfeld: ‘This Is The Worst Military Operation I’ve Ever Seen’

Fox News reporter Trey Yingst joined “The Five” to talk about Afghanistan war coming to an end and the Biden administration’s botched withdrawal, which saw 13 American soldiers killed and many American citizens left behind.

Yingst said there were still Americans and their allies in the country, many hiding from the Taliban.

Gutfeld replied, “It isn’t about the military. This was not a successful airlift. I’m sorry, it wasn’t.”

“This is the worst military operation I’ve ever seen and it had nothing to do with the military,” Gutfeld said. “It had to do with the government that let them down.”

Gutfeld said that despite America having the best military anywhere, the government’s decisions meant that they had been forced to rely on the Taliban for security reasons.

“Just putting that sentence together just makes you sad,” Gutfeld said.

Geraldo Rivera chimed in, “We lost the war, dude.”

Gutfeld: ‘I Think The Idea Of Saying How Successful This Is — We’re Polishing A Turd’

“I know we did. I know that and by the way, I’m very happy that we’re getting out of there,” Gutfeld said.

“But we can not forget how awful this was and how it let down a lot of people,” he continued.

“There are a lot of veterans who are looking at this and they’re sick to their stomach.,” Gutfeld finished. “I think the idea of saying how successful this is — we’re polishing a turd.”

Biden Told Afghan President To “Create Perception” Taliban Wasn’t Winning…

 • Zero Hedge

Despite all evidence to the contrary, President Biden appeared before the American people on Tuesday to try to sell his version of the American withdrawal from Afghanistan.

With a straight face, Biden half-shouted to the American people about the “extraordinary success” of the evacuation effort – an assessment that seemed completely at odds with the reality of the situation – before trotting out some equally specious stats: the US had successfully evacuated 90% of Americans who wanted to leave Kabul, and Biden committed to doing everything in his power to help those left behind.

But just as President Biden was delivering his prepared remarks, Reuters was quietly publishing a leaked transcript from the president’s final call with Ashraf Ghani, which took place in late July. The call offers a more realistic picture of a Biden Administration obsessed with the optics of the pullout, who was still pushing the Afghans to focus on an irrelevant strategy shift to try and make it look like they were doing something in the face of Taliban defeat.

No Bueno! Biden Tries To Reassure Americans After Afghanistan Debacle

Streaming: Wed 12 PM EST Taliban leaders took over control of the Kabul airport Tuesday and marked the departure of the last U.S. plane from the country by taking a symbolic walk across the airport’s sole runway, according to a report. “The world should have learned its lesson and this is the enjoyable moment of victory,” Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesman, said in a livestream video, according to the Associated Press.
