Ten World-Class Philosophers Who Defend Christianity — Daily Declaration

Is Christianity anti-intellectual? Furthermore, is it irrational to believe in God or that the Bible is His perfect Word? Here is a list of ten world-class philosophers who are both unashamed Christians and professional intellectuals.

Throughout the article below are some helpful resources (videos and books) by the respective philosophers. At the end of the article, I will include links to two further resources for your own research.

Firstly, note that this list is far from exhaustive. Importantly, all of the following philosophers are “contemporary” in the sense that they were active during the late 20th century and/or the 21st century. Except for one (Norman Geisler), all of them are still alive (at the time of writing).

Certainly, this list is not a “top 10” list. It is not necessarily ranking all of the best Christian philosophers and is certainly not in order of prominence. Indeed, I could add countless other names that I am familiar with (Francis J. BeckwithC. Stephen EvansMarilyn and Robert AdamsPaul CopanBrian LeftowTimothy J. McGrew and Tyler McNabb, to name a few).

All of the below philosophers have taught at the university level or hold at least one doctorate. More importantly, however, they have made significant contributions to their academic fields.

All of these names are orthodox Christians; they are boldly living out the words of 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (AMP):

For though we walk in the flesh [as mortal men], we are not carrying on our [spiritual] warfare according to the flesh and using the weapons of man. The weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood].

Our weapons are divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying sophisticated arguments and every exalted and proud thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought and purpose captive to the obedience of Christ…

As C.S. Lewis (himself one of the finest intellectuals of his era) put it:

“Good philosophy must exist, if for no other reason, because bad philosophy needs to be answered.”

While philosophy is not the be-all and end-all of the Christian life, it is encouraging to know that so many Christians are being faithful to God’s calling in their area of life.
