Divine Expulsion — VCY America

Thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong.

Joshua 17:18

It is a great encouragement to valor to be assured of victory, for then a man goes forth to war in confidence and ventures where else he had been afraid to go. Our warfare is with evil within us and around us, and we ought to be persuaded that we are able to get the victory and that we shall do so in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are not riding for a fall, but to win; and win we shall. The grace of God in its omnipotence is put forth for the overflow of evil in every form: hence the certainty of triumph.

Certain of our sins find chariots of iron in our constitution, our former habits, our associations, and our occupations. Nevertheless we must overcome them. They are very strong, and in reference to them we are very weak; yet in the name of God we must master them, and we will. If one sin has dominion of us we are not the Lord’s free men. A man who is held by only one chain is still a captive. There is no going to heaven with one sin ruling within us, for of the saints it is said, “Sin shall not have dominion over you.” Up, then, and slay every Canaanite, and break to shivers every chariot of iron! The Lord of hosts is with us, and who shall resist His sin-destroying power?

The Bible and its Story: Jacob Blesses Joseph’s Sons

When Jacob was presented by his son to Pharaoh, the patriarch blessed the mighty monarch, as indeed by reason of his venerable age he had good right to do. Jacob himself, however, comparing his life with those of his fathers, declared, “few and evil have the days of the years of my life been.” As he grew very feeble, Joseph brought to him the two little sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, who had been born to Joseph in Egypt. And Jacob blessed the children, seeking to pass on to them as Joseph’s sons the birthright and leadership of the race, which in his own life had caused so much strife and bitterness.

‎Joseph brought the elder boy Manasseh to his father’s right, to receive the chief blessing; but Jacob deliberately crossed his hands and laid the right hand with its gift of leadership upon the younger, Ephraim. “And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before Manasseh.” Rembrandt represents Joseph’s Egyptian wife as also standing by; but her costume is not Egyptian, being copied from the Dutch dress of the artist’s day.

The Coming of Messiah — Grace to You Blog

The Coming of Messiah — Grace to You Blog

Christ’s arrival on this planet two thousand years ago wasn’t some divine plan B after God’s failed attempts at redemption in the Old Testament. Rather, everything that took place in the Old Testament pointed to, and culminated in, the coming of Messiah. Sending the Savior had always been God’s plan, from eternity past.

“God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world” (Hebrews 1:1–2). The Old Testament was simply God speaking to the Jewish people (“the fathers”) through the prophets in many different ways and at a number of different times, as the divine timetable marched inexorably toward the Savior’s arrival.

The prophets were men who spoke for God, and they did so “in many portions,” or various times throughout history. In other words, God’s Spirit spoke through the Old Testament writers in thirty-nine different books. And these books come to us in various literary forms: Much of the literature is narrative prose and history, much is prophecy, some is poetry, and a little appears as the law.

Furthermore, God’s servants received His words “in many ways,” or by different methods. Sometimes He spoke to them directly in audible words. At other times He spoke to them indirectly and prompted their minds with the thoughts He wanted conveyed. Then there were other methods by which God communicated His truth—parables, types, symbols, ceremonies, and even stone tablets (the Ten Commandments). But all of it was inspired, inerrant, and truly what God wanted written, the way He wanted it written.

The Old Testament is basically progressive revelation; it moves from a lesser degree of completeness to a fuller degree of completeness. It begins with what the apostle Paul later called the basic elements (Galatians 4:39Colossians 2:820), the early rules and regulations under the law. Then it spells things out in greater detail through types and ceremonies. Finally, the prophetic books develop a more complete understanding of God’s redemptive program (1 Peter 1:10–12).

Prophecy Perfected

The writer of Hebrews and other New Testament writers recognized that all those features of the Old Testament affirmed its divine character. When Paul wrote, “All Scripture is inspired by God” (2 Timothy 3:16), he was referring to the Old Testament. And Peter was doing likewise when he said, “No prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation . . . but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God” (2 Peter 1:20–21).

Hebrews 1 shows that Jesus Christ is both the culmination and theme of Old Testament Scripture. From Genesis 3:15 (the first allusion to Christ and the gospel) to Malachi 4:1–3 (a reference to Christ’s returning in judgment against the ungodly), the Lord Jesus is the subject all the way through the Old Testament. He’s the One pictured in the sacrifices and ceremonies detailed in the five books of Moses. He’s the great prophet and King who’s promised time and again (Numbers 24:17Deuteronomy 18:1518Psalm 2:624:7–1045:689:27Isaiah 9:732:142:1–252:761:1Jeremiah 23:5Daniel 7:14Micah 5:2Zechariah 9:9).

However, the Old Testament preparation for Christ is incomplete and fragmentary. Not one of its books or writers presents the entire picture of the Savior. We get only a partial view here and a partial insight there—and the inspired writers presented those over a fifteen-hundred-year period. As the apostle Peter says,

“As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.” (1 Peter 1:10–11)

The prophets couldn’t sort everything out; they wondered exactly whom they were writing about and precisely when everything would occur.

The Old Testament’s progressive revelation prepared its readers for the coming of Christ. But no one saw a complete picture of the Messiah until He actually came in the New Testament.

The writer of Hebrews affirms that Christ is the full revelation of God when he says that God “in these last days has spoken to us in His Son” (Hebrews 1:2). When Jesus came, God presented the entire picture. And that’s where we’ll pick it up next time.

As Advent Begins, Here are Ten Vital Truths About the Incarnation of Jesus — Southern Equip

With the Advent season here, it is always edifying to think about the glorious fact that God became a man and was, as the hymnwriter so well puts it, born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth.

Here are 10 things we must know about the Incarnation:

1. The person or active subject of the incarnation is the eternal Son.

John 1:14 is clear: “The Word became flesh.” In other words, it was the Son from eternity who became incarnate, not the divine nature. The Son, who is in eternal relation to the Father and Spirit, willingly humbled himself and chose to assume a human nature in obedience to his Father and for our salvation (Phil. 2:6-8).

2. As the eternal Son, the second person of the triune Godhead, he is the full image and expression of the Father and is thus fully God.

Along with the Father and Spirit, the Son fully and equally shares the divine nature. As the image and exact correspondence of the Father (Col. 1:15; Heb. 1:3), the Son is fully God. All of God’s perfections and attributes are his since Christ is God the Son (Col. 2:9). As the Son, he participates in the divine rule, receives divine worship, and does all divine works as the Son (Ps. 110:1; Eph. 1:22; Phil. 2:9-11; Col. 1:15-17; Heb. 1:2-3; Rev. 5:11-12).

3. As God the Son, he has always existed in an eternally-ordered relation to the Father and Spirit, which now is gloriously displayed in the incarnation.

It was fitting that the Son alone, who is from the Father by the Spirit, became incarnate and not the other divine persons (John 1:1-2, 14, 18). In the incarnation, the Son displayed his divine-filial dependence on the Father and always acted in relation to the Father by the Spirit (John 5:19-30; Mark 1:12; Luke 4:1-21). From eternity and in the incarnation, the Son never acted on his own or independently but always in relation to and inseparably from his Father and the Spirit.

4. The incarnation is an act of addition, not subtraction.

In the incarnation, the eternal Son who has always possessed the divine nature has not changed or set aside his deity. Instead, he has added to himself a second nature, namely a human nature consisting of a human body and soul (Phil. 2:6-8). As a result, the individual Jesus is one person—the Son—who now subsists in two natures, and thus is fully God and fully man.

5. The human nature assumed by the divine Son is fully human and completely sinless.

Christ’s human nature was unfallen and untainted by the effects of sin. Our inborn inclination to anti-God rebellion was not part of Jesus’s human makeup. Jesus fully experienced the effects of living in a fallen world, but he did not share the guilt or disposition of Adam’s sin passed on to the human race. In fact, Jesus never committed a sin, nor could he (Matt. 3:15; John. 8:46; Heb. 4:15; 7:26; 1 Pet. 1:19). Although he was tempted like us, he perfectly obeyed his Father, even unto death, as our covenant mediator, thus accomplishing our salvation as the man Christ Jesus (1 Tim. 2:5; Heb. 5:5-10).

6. The virgin conception was the glorious means by which the incarnation took place.

The incarnation was thoroughly supernatural and a demonstration of our triune God’s sovereign and gracious initiative to redeem his people (Matt. 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-38). The virgin conception was the time and means by which the divine Son added to himself a human nature. By the virgin conception, the triune God created a new human nature for the Son, and as a result of this action, in Jesus, we truly meet God face-to-face, not indwelling or overshadowing human flesh but in full undiminished glory. Although we behold Jesus as a man, he is much more; he is the Lord, the divine Son who humbles himself and veils his glory by becoming one with us.

7. From conception, the Son limited his divine life in such a way that he did not override the limitations of his human nature.

As a result of the incarnation, the divine Son lives as a true man with the normal physical, mental, volitional, and psychological attributes and capacities of original humanity. As the incarnate Son, he experienced the wonder and weaknesses of a completely human life. He grew in wisdom and physical stature (Luke 2:52), experienced tears and joy, and suffered death and a glorious resurrection for his people and their salvation (John 11:33, 35; 19:30; 1 Cor. 15:3-4).

8. But the Son was not limited to his human nature alone since he continued to act in and through his divine nature.

This truth is best demonstrated in the incarnate Son’s continuing to sustain the universe (Col. 1:16-17; Heb. 1:3), alongside Christ’s other divine actions during his life and ministry. In Christ, there are two natures which remain distinct and retain their own attributes and integrity, yet the Son is able to act through both natures. For this reason, the Son is not completely circumscribed by his human nature; he is also able to act outside of it in his divine nature.

When and how the Son acts through both natures is best explained in terms of Trinitarian relations worked out in redemptive history for the sake of our salvation. The Son, who has always inseparably acted from the Father and by the Spirit, continues to do so but now as the obedient Son acting as our covenant representative and substitute. In the incarnation, neither the Son’s deity nor his humanity is diminished.

9. By taking on our human nature, the Son became the first man of the new creation, our great mediator and new covenant head.

As the Son incarnate, our Lord Jesus Christ in his life, death, and resurrection, reverses the work of the first Adam and forges ahead as the last Adam, our great trailblazer and champion (Heb. 2:10). As a result of the incarnation, God the Son becomes perfectly qualified to meet our every need, especially our need for the forgiveness of our sin (Heb. 2:5-18; 7:22-28; 9:15-10:18).

10. God the Son incarnate is utterly unique and alone Lord and Savior.

Jesus is in a category all by himself. Given who God is in all his glory and moral perfection, and what sin is before God, apart from the Son’s incarnation and his entire work for us, there is no salvation (John 14:6; Acts 4:11). As the divine Son, he alone satisfies God’s own judgment against us and the demand for perfect obedience (Rom. 5:12-21). As the incarnate Son, he alone can identify with us as our representative and substitute (Heb. 5:1). Our salvation hope for the payment of our sin and our full restoration as God’s image-bearers is only accomplished in Jesus Christ our Lord (Rom. 3:21-26; Heb. 2:5-18).

Does the Existence of Moral Evil Disprove the Existence of God? (Podcast) — Cold Case Christianity

In this blast from the past, J. Warner Wallace examines another aspect of the classic “Problem of Evil”. Why would an all-loving and all-powerful God allow people to commit horrific crimes? Doesn’t He have the power to stop these kinds of crimes? Doesn’t He care enough about us, as potential victims, to stop them? Do examples of moral evil demonstrate that God doesn’t exist?

The Bible and its Story: Joseph Reorganizes Egypt

After the reunion of Joseph and his people, his life story has two aspects, one of which is often overlooked in the joy of the other. He was not only a devoted son and brother, he was also, and continued to be, Pharaoh’s chief vizier, the true ruler of all Egypt.

‎As such, he planned and apparently carried out a complete readjustment of the entire country. Through the remaining five years of the famine he sold grain to the people in what seemed a hard and grasping way, receiving in payment first their money, then, when that was gone, their cattle, then their lands. In the end they had even to sell themselves to him, becoming slaves for the sake of food. Then and then only did Joseph change, and take up the part of the generous and merciful master. He established the people wisely throughout the land, gave them grain in plenty and restored all Egypt to prosperity. In return he exacted of the people only that they should pay to Pharaoh as a tax one-fifth of what thev earned.

December 1 – Introduction to “things concerning [Christ]” — Reformed Perspective

As we come to the end of another year, it is good for us to focus on the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. In this season, however, we need to concentrate on what God’s Word reveals about Him. Traditional depictions of Christ’s birth are at times inaccurate and even deceptive. The focus on consumerism and the experiences of the season may distract from who He truly is. This month’s meditations will focus on many of the “things concerning Himself” in the scriptures. (Luke 24:27)

Old Testament believers expected that the Messiah would come to save them from sin, the effects of the curse and even death itself. It is good to be reminded of how God was preparing them for the coming of His Son. They lived in dark, evil and difficult times. Isaiah prophesied to them that “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light” (Isaiah 9:2). What a privilege we have living after His coming, as the Light of the world has revealed Himself. Knowing Him and knowing about Him, we can read the whole Bible as it points to Him.

As you work through this devotional survey of the Bible this month, may it remind you of the enduring hope of the gospel: Jesus Christ came to save sinners! Our prayer for you is that you would be genuinely confessing your sin, turning from it, and putting your faith in the Saviour. May this month be a time of true joy and thanksgiving founded on the Word of God and blessed by the work of the Holy Spirit!

The eternal son

“You, LORD, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish… But You are the same, And Your years will not fail.” – Hebrews 1:10,12

Scripture reading: Hebrews 1:1-12

During the month of December, many people are thinking about the Lord Jesus Christ’s birth. Minds will be filled with familiar depictions of hosts of angels and the Christ-child lying in a manger. Before we can think about His birth correctly, however, we need to think about the Son of God’s eternal identity.

Hebrews 1 is a chapter that testifies to His eternal power. Using a series of Old Testament quotations, this chapter shows that Jesus Christ is greater than angels, that He is even God. When verse 12 quotes from Psalm 102, it even addresses the Son of God as the “LORD.” This means that He is Jehovah, the great I AM! Jehovah is the covenant-keeping God Who truly exists, while all of the other gods are creations of man. He created, visited and delivered His people and continues to do so.

In Hebrews 1:11-12, this Son of God is also contrasted with all of creation. He does not age; He is eternal. He is different than creation, always existing, and always self-sufficient. Even now, the heavens are aging. Stars are burning out and chaos is increasing. The earth erodes, quakes and slips towards disorder. Like an old piece of clothing, everything is wearing out. There is no enduring hope to be found on this earth; even unbelieving scientists admit that it is guaranteed to perish one day. But the Son of God is the same, forever. He has always existed and always will. Do not forget that Jesus Christ’s history is from eternity to eternity!

Suggestions for prayer

Pray that you, or others you love, would grow to know Jesus Christ as He truly is, the eternal LORD.

Pastor Robert VanDoodewaard currently serves the Free Reformed Church in Powassan, Ontario, Canada as a minister of the gospel.

California Town Becomes ‘Constitutional Republic’ to Protest Pandemic Mandates
The mayor of Oroville, California has found a revolutionary way to protest Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D-CA) vaccine mandate for school children. Now that the mandates … (are) now shoving something inside your body that nobody knows the long-term effects of, that’s just like, OK, now you’re, in my opinion, crossing the line,” Thomson said.

CNN Gives Wrist Slap to Chris Cuomo

Suspending the anchor for helping his brother Andrew doesn’t go nearly far enough.

Nate Jackson

Stop watching CNN. And while you’re at it, stop drinking out of the toilet. Fortunately, a lot of Americans are taking that advice — at least about CNN. The network Ted Turner founded 41 years ago saw its ratings slide yet again in October. Clearly, CNN doesn’t know what to do without Donald Trump to scream about, and big changes may be coming. That might have just started with Chris Cuomo.

Cuomo was just suspended indefinitely for aiding his brother, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, throughout the latter’s struggle with accusations of sexual harassment. Put another way, CNN’s most-watched, $6 million-a-year primetime anchor and alleged journalist assisted his brother, the governor of one of the most powerful states in the country, with responding to charges of sex crimes. That’s not journalism; it’s activism.

CNN had previously done nothing to Cuomo after May revelations that he had held strategy sessions with his brother. At the time, CNN President Jeff Zucker dismissed a suspension as “punishment for the sake of punishing.”

Our Mark Alexander disagreed, writing in August that it’s “LONG past time for [Cuomo] to resign his stardom at CNN, that bastion of high journalism that calls itself ‘The Most Trusted Name in News.’”

The network’s tune changed after the New York attorney general’s office released documented evidence of Chris’s activism, which included providing feedback for Andrew’s public statements and gathering information about forthcoming damaging stories or allegations to help his brother prepare. CNN responded that those records “raise serious questions” about its anchor’s conduct. “These documents point to a greater level of involvement in his brother’s efforts than we previously knew,” its statement added. “As a result, we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation.”

So, CNN’s journalistic juggernaut couldn’t get to the bottom of just how much its own employee was doing to aid an embattled elected official without help from the NY attorney general?

One CNN staffer wants to know, “How does he still have a job at the network? He’s not a journalist.”

The same could be said of virtually every other personality at CNN. As The Wall Street Journal’s James Freeman writes, the offense is network-wide. “Given CNN’s fawning 2020 coverage of then-Gov. Cuomo, some viewers may be wondering if Chris really is the only CNN employee related to Andrew,” Freeman says. “Didn’t everyone treat him like family?” That fawning came largely due to Cuomo’s handling of the COVID pandemic — you know, the one in which he crushed his state’s economy and was responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of elderly New York residents. Chris advised Andrew on the pandemic, too.

CNN’s on-air roster has a growing list of perverts and offenders, including Jeffrey Toobin, Don Lemon, and Chris Cuomo himself. That’s a big problem, as is CNN’s utter lack of journalistic integrity. There is a rumored shake-up happening, though. That could come courtesy of Discovery chief David Zaslav, who is incoming and said to be planning personnel changes and to “lean into news” instead of sensationalism. Those changes would be welcome, but we’re not holding our breath.

Why? Other than the fact that Zaslav helped created MSNBC, we’ll leave the answer to none other than Chris Cuomo, who in July told investigators: “There is no division between politics and media. We all know each other.”

High Gas Prices? Buy Electric, Says Buttigieg

With jumping prices at the pump hitting Americans hard, Biden’s transportation secretary pushes nonsense solutions.

Thomas Gallatin

There may be a myriad of reasons to explain why Joe Biden’s popularity is so low — the Afghanistan debacle, COVID vaccine mandates, his embrace of the hard-Left, economic stagnation, record numbers of illegal aliens pouring over an open border, spiking gas prices, and frightening levels of inflation, just to name a few.

But the common thread among all of these is the Biden administration’s instinctive elitist attitude. It’s the condescending message that “we’re smarter than all you American rubes.” And that message was fully on display when Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg effectively told Americans concerned over skyrocketing gas prices to go out and buy electric vehicles. Classic Marie Antoinette.

Stumping for Biden’s and the Democrats’ “Build Back Better” socialist spending boondoggle, Buttigieg noted that it included a “$12,500 discount” for the purchase of an electric vehicle so that “families who own that vehicle will never have to worry about gas prices again.” He went on to suggest that rural Americans “who have the most distances to drive, who burn the most gas” and poor city dwellers where gas prices are usually higher “would gain the most by having that [electric] vehicle.” He insisted, “These are the very residents who have not always been connected to electric vehicles that are viewed as a kind of luxury item.”

Well, maybe they’re viewed as a luxury item precisely because they are luxury items, even with taxpayers picking up a lot of the bill. The average price of an EV as of October, according to Kelly Blue Book, was $55,676, while the average price of a new compact car with a dreaded gas engine is less than half that amount, coming in at $25,240. The average price of a new gas-powered SUV is $34,122, still well below the price of an EV even after factoring in the EV “discount” Buttigieg hyped. In fact, the average price of a Luxury Subcompact SUV/Crossover is $44,285, over $10,000 less than an EV.

But of course, it’s all cake to Buttigieg, who contended, “If we can make the electric vehicle less expensive for everybody, more people can take advantage, and we’ll be selling more American-made EVs, which means in time they’ll become less expensive to make and to buy for everybody.” Well, according to AAA’s findings, an EV on average costs $600 more annually than gas-powered cars, even after factoring in the savings on fuel costs and maintenance.

The assertion that more Americans owning an EV is the solution for cutting household energy costs is simply nonsense, and Buttigieg knows it. As is the fairy tale that EVs are somehow emission free. The agenda here is all about promoting greater government control over the lives of Americans, not “saving the planet” or lowering the cost of living.

As political analyst David Harsanyi observes: “The notion that the United States is going to go ‘clean’ by 2030 or 2050 — or whatever year Democrats are now promising — without some yet-to-be discovered mind-blowing technological advance, is about as realistic as every family of four in Iowa going out and buying a Tesla. To reach that goal would mean taking on colossal economy-destroying costs, imposing draconian state-imposed restrictions on economic growth and freedom, and accepting a steep deterioration in our standard of living.”

Buttigieg lives in one of the wealthiest cities in the country, where he may opt to bike to work as his security detail follows closely behind in a EV, ready to pick him up at a moment’s notice. He felt free recently to take two months of paternity leave (on the taxpayers’ dime) for his and his male partner’s adoption of babies — all in the middle of the national supply-chain crisis. Meanwhile, regular Americans are struggling to figure out how to make ends meet. Shelling out $55,000 for an EV to avoid high gas prices is only a solution for the wealthy and out-of-touch politicians.

A Liberal Mayor Gets Mugged by Reality

Her city beset by violence, Oakland’s Libby Schaff denounces the “defund the cops” madness.

Douglas Andrews

We can stick a fork in it. The “Defund the Police” movement is dead in America.

Democrat politicians have mostly been running away from it ever since they realized it was bad politically. Many have even denied that the idea was theirs all along, instead trying to shift the blame to Republicans.

Defenestrating the defund movement when it proved politically poisonous was the wrong reason, of course, but the will to stay in power is all that seems to govern these people. It’s deep down in their lizard brain, their amygdala. Still, it’s hard to know how many lives would’ve been saved if a few more mayors in big cities and leftist enclaves had only had the guts to denounce this madness from the start.

To her credit, Oakland’s Libby Schaff was never really down with the Defund movement. She’s a proud progressive, to be sure, and we disagree with just about everything she does. But some ideas are so bad that they can’t be entertained, even by hard-left politicians. For Schaff, defunding the police was one such bad idea. She’d been resisting her hard-left city council’s anti-cop campaign almost from its inception, which came with the George Floyd riots and the Black Lives Matter movement. Schaff even cast the tiebreaking vote last year to slash roughly $150 million from the police department’s budget.

For that vote, for her efforts to make Oakland’s notoriously mean streets a bit less mean, her home was vandalized with splatters of red paint and messages such as “Wake Up Libby,” “Take Responsibility Now,” and “Black Blood On Your Hands” on the sidewalk and garage door.

Clearly, these vandals don’t understand the inverse relationship between law enforcement and lawlessness.

That effort to intimidate the mayor doesn’t appear to have worked, though. As the Washington Examiner reports, “Schaaf announced Monday that she wants to reverse planned cuts to the city’s police department and even hire additional officers following its 127th homicide this year.”

Said Schaff: “Oakland needs more police. We have been impacted by staffing reductions. COVID interrupted our recruitment and training processes, and the defund rhetoric is challenging our ability to attract and retain recruits. And we know that that is not unique to Oakland.”

Schaff also said, “There is nothing progressive about unbridled gun violence,” and she did so in reference to police violence. But no one believes that. No one believes that police violence is what’s plaguing our nation’s big cities. Criminal-friendly leftist policies are what’s plaguing our cities.

As for the straw that broke the Defund movement’s back, that may have been the death of Kevin Nishita, a beloved retired cop who was working as a security guard for a TV news crew when he was cold-bloodedly gunned down last week by thieves trying to steal their equipment. Perhaps it was one too many murders for Schaff.

More than 80 years ago, upon seeing that her childhood home in Oakland had been torn down, author and poet Gertrude Stein remarked, “There is no there there.” Some have misconstrued the quote to be a backhanded comparison to neighboring San Francisco, but it wasn’t that. Nancy Pelosi’s city, in fact, has plenty of its own problems, from rampant drug addiction and homelessness to shoplifting free-for-alls and a soaring murder rate. No wonder Pelosi recently bought a mansion in red-state Florida.

These days in Oakland, there still isn’t much there there, but perhaps better days are ahead for the city now that its mayor has been forced fully around to the right way of thinking about law and order.

The Ghislaine Maxwell Case

The infamous British socialite is facing charges of sex trafficking.

Emmy Griffin

Who is Ghislaine Maxwell?

She is the daughter of Robert Maxwell, a British media mogul and millionaire who died under mysterious circumstances and is accused of misappropriating funds from his businesses. Ghislaine is a British socialite who has connections to many rich and famous people worldwide including presidents and royalty. She was born in France and holds citizenship in France, England, and the United States. The 59-year-old was the longtime consort and friend of disgusting sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein.

After being on the lam from American authorities, they eventually uncovered her in an isolated estate in New Hampshire. The FBI arrested her in July 2020. She has been held in a Brooklyn prison ever since (though she has attempted to get transferred to a more comfortable confinement citing fears about safety in prison based on Epstein’s apparent “suicide”).

What is she accused of doing?

Maxwell is accused of aiding and abetting Epstein’s delinquent sexual behavior by trafficking and grooming young girls to become his playthings, and even taking part in some of the sexual abuse. Essentially, she is accused of being the madam to Epstein’s house of trafficked young girls. She was the normalizer of the abusive behavior and a main manipulator of these victims, some as young as 14.

The duo started out their grooming by promising young girls that they would fund their hopes and dreams, using places like a prestigious fine arts camp. Later, in Florida, they developed a pyramid scheme where girls they had already victimized would go out and recruit more girls. Epstein would pay for their silence on the matter. Solicitation, anyone?

The prosecution and the defense laid out their case for the court earlier this week. The prosecution, represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Pomerantz, told the jury that Maxwell and Epstein were “partners in crime.” The prosecution has four main witnesses, a.k.a. victims, who are willing to testify.

The defense’s opening statements were given by Bobbi Sternheim. The gist of the defense is this: Witnesses have tainted memories, they are only after money, and Maxwell is being used as a “scapegoat” for Epstein’s vile criminal behavior. Sternheim actually said, “Ever since Eve was tempting Adam with the apple, women have been blamed for the bad behavior of men.”

On Tuesday, the testimony of Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime pilot was given. Lawrence Paul Visoski Jr. stated that Maxwell was Epstein’s No. 2 vis-à-vis recruiting girls to abuse them.

If convicted, she could face up to 70 years in prison, which is basically a life sentence for her.

What are the trial controversies?

It is not a public trial. There are no video cameras recording every moment like there were in the Rittenhouse case. This is actually very typical for a federal trial. But this trial holds a lot of public interest given the multitude of victims. The judge has also barred media from her courtroom.

The judge is a Barack Obama appointee who was recently promoted by Joe Biden.

The interesting player list continues: James Comey’s daughter is the lead prosecutor in this case. Recall that former FBI Director Comey was fired by President Donald Trump for his partisan and unethical dealings regarding Hillary Clinton. Comey’s daughter is controversial because she and her family are open and vocal Clinton supporters. Former President Bill Clinton had several dealings with Epstein, even flying on his private jet. Ghislaine and Bill seem to have had a friendship as well.

The last sketchy bit about how this case is proceeding is that Maxwell and the Department of Justice had certain redactions that they wanted to keep from the public. Some of these are supposedly names of high-profile elites who wish to have their privacy respected. Here was the reasoning that U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan gave for her ruling: “Those portions of the transcript, which were redacted in the civil matter, concern privacy interests and their disclosure would merely serve to cater to a ‘craving for that which is sensational and impure’. The Court thus concludes that such redactions are justified.”

All of these stacked together do not bode well for the verdict, and, to put it mildly, it has us wondering if all this left-wing partisanship will serve the purpose of justice.

‘Smoolyay’ and Friends Have Some ‘Splaining to Do

The bad-acting hate-crime hoaxer known as Jussie Smollett finally has his day in court.

Douglas Andrews

It’s a dirty shame that we had to wait nearly three years for Jussie Smollett to finally get his constitutionally guaranteed right to a speedy trial by a jury of his peers, but here we are. Finally.

And Juicy, that “famous French actor” of comedian Dave Chappelle’s most tear-jerkingly funny (albeit crude) takedown, has some serious ‘splaining to do. But he’s not alone. If misery loves company, Smollett has plenty of it. As for that company: Where to start?

“Jussie Smollett is one of the kindest, most gentle human beings I know,” said then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris. “I’m praying for his quick recovery. This was an attempted modern day lynching. No one should have to fear for their life because of their sexuality or color of their skin. We must confront this hate.”

What an ignorant, ill-conceived, off-the-rails take this is. For example, what manner of “kindest, most gentle human beings” inflame the passions of a deeply divided nation by staging fake hate crimes whose perpetrators happen to be one’s political enemies? And what kind of responsible public servant buys such a tale without first looking into it, and without first thinking about the naked implausibility of it, and without using such racially incendiary language as a “modern day lynching”?

Of course, Harris wasn’t alone. Those gullible enough to believe Smollett’s story weighed in immediately, and en masse, from Joe Biden to Maxine Waters to Cory Booker to Eric Swalwell to Bernie Sanders.

The story, were it not such a damned despicable act of racial arson, would be chef’s-kiss hilarious: On January 29, 2019, two Trump-supporting, MAGA-hat-wearing thugs were out at 2:00 a.m. on the coldest night of the year in a trendy part of downtown Chicago, when they happened to spot a bundled-up third-rate actor from a decidedly non-Trumpy TV series emerging from a Subway restaurant down the street. So they called out to him with some racist and homophobic slurs as they approached, then they beat him up, put a noose around his neck, poured bleach on his head, and shouted that this neighborhood, which had probably gone 85-15 for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in 2016, was “MAGA country.”

Hey, what’s not to believe?

But Jussie Smollett (pronounced Juicy Smool-YAY) wasn’t finished just yet. With a half-eaten Subway sandwich by his side and a noose still draped around his neck, he called the cops to report the fairy tale.

Unfortunately for Jussie, the police then began to do what police tend to do, and his fake hate crime began to fall apart. Those Trumpian thugs turned out to be Nigerian brothers and associates of Smollett. Some six weeks later, the Cook County State’s Attorney office filed a 16-count felony indictment against him, including charges that he’d staged the attack and made numerous false statements to police. On top of that, Smollett had earlier added to his legal jeopardy when he engaged in a bit of mail fraud by sending himself a racially threatening letter. But then, just three weeks later, the same state’s attorney office dropped the charges in exchange for 15 hours of community service and the forfeiture of his $10,000 bond. How his legal team quietly managed to work such a sweetheart deal behind the scenes is but one more example of our two-tiered justice system — one system for those on the Left, and another for those on the Right — and it should trouble every American who believes in equal justice under the law.

If this guy weren’t so stupid, he’d be a real menace to society. As it is, he’s merely a cartoon character and an embarrassment to the Left. Which, we suppose, is just fine with us.

Smollett is in court this week, and he’s charged with felony disorderly conduct. It’s a class-4 felony, and it carries a sentence of up to three years in prison.

Defense attorney Nenye Uche says his client is the real victim here, though, and he’s trying to make the case that the two Nigerian brothers attacked Smollett because, well, because they just didn’t like him. Never mind the $3,500 check Smollett paid to the men to stage the attack. No, his lawyer says, that was for them to train him for an upcoming music video. Uh-huh.

Adding to the mountain of evidence against Smollett is the existence of video footage from the day prior to the Attack of the Nigerian MAGA Men, which, according to prosecutors, shows our hero conducting a dry run of the hoax.

Even if he’s convicted — and he should be — no one seriously believes he’ll spend any time behind bars. But he should. Indeed, we should make an example out of Jussie Smollett. We should send a strong message to all the other reprehensible little would-be racial arsonists who dream of starting their own little brushfires.

Fake hate crimes are a serious problem in this country, and they keep happening because the real thing just doesn’t happen nearly often enough for the narrators. Fake hate crimes are one of the weapons by which America-hating Marxist leftists push their narrative that this is an irredeemably racist nation whose framework is one of white supremacy. It isn’t. And we should denounce and punish those who are hell-bent on spreading this awful lie.

Border Crossers Want Jobs, Not Sanctuary

A new study turns the Biden administration’s claim about migrant pull factors on its head.

Thomas Gallatin

A recent study on migration from the Migration Policy Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has concluded what many Americans have long known — the number one reason the vast majority of migrants enter the U.S. illegally is for employment.

The study was based upon an in-person survey of some 5,000 individuals combined with another online survey that garnered 6,000 responses. Again, it found that the primary factor pushing people to migrate to the U.S. was jobs. Analysts noted, “Low wages, unemployment and insufficient income to cover basic necessities directly affected people’s livelihoods and contributed significantly to the desire to emigrate.”

Furthermore, the study found that some 30% of households in three countries — El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala — relied on money sent to them from household members working in the U.S.

The report flies in the face of the Biden administration’s narrative on migration, which is that the primary “root causes” for illegal migration are violence and insecurity. The administration uses this narrative to label these individuals as asylum-seekers. In reality, the vast majority are job-seekers.

Kamala Harris, Joe Biden’s border czar, recently produced a report of her own in which she claimed, “The COVID-19 pandemic and extreme weather conditions have indeed exacerbated the root causes of migration — which include corruption, violence, trafficking and poverty.” That was clearly not the conclusion of MIT’s report, and when asked about it, Harris’s office was mum.

The Washington Times reports, “When asked the motivations for leaving, economics dominated, with 75% of Salvadorans, 89% of Hondurans and 91% of Guatemalans citing that as a factor.” Meanwhile, Harris’s claims of climate and environment being a major factor was cited by just 3% of migrants, and insecurity or violence was cited by just 8%.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration has failed to publicly release the figure on the number of aliens currently residing in the U.S. whose visas have expired. According to congressional rules, the Department of Homeland Security is required to both send a report to Congress as well as make the information available to the American public. Thus far, the administration has avoided sharing the data.

“For whatever reason, it appears political appointees are not disclosing a report produced by career subject matter experts,” noted former Immigration and Customs Enforcement adviser Jon Feere. “It’s consistent with the Biden administration’s general hostility to transparency. The Biden policies are a slap in the face to all State Department employees — the message is that all foreigners can ignore visa adjudicators and stay as long as they’d like.”

Once again, the objective of the Biden administration is clear: Bring in as many illegal aliens as possible and work to eventually get them classified as U.S. citizens for the intended aim of growing Democrat voter rolls. If Democrats believed the vast majority of illegals would vote Republican, they would be the biggest advocates for building a border wall you’ve ever seen.

We already know that. $1,000 was too low when you set it. Now, after six people are dead, and dozens more injured, you set the bond at $5 million. So what’s different now? He was a career criminal before he killed six people at a Christmas parade. We don’t need prosecutors to react after there are six bodies laying on a parade route; we need prosecutors and politicians who prioritize public safety beforehand.” —Trey Gowdy

“[Darrell Brooks] should not have even been on the street. [He] had clear, anti-white animus. And this was an intentional act. And it seems like, you know, for corporate press, they’re more apt to characterize a parent who goes to a school board meeting to protest bad policies as a domestic terrorist than somebody who intentionally rams an SUV into a crowd of innocent people.” —Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

Friendly fire I: “Let me be clear, Oakland needs more police. We have been interrupted by staffing reductions, COVID interrupted our recruitment and training processes, and the defund rhetoric is challenging our ability to attract and retain recruits.” —Oakland, California, Democrat Mayor Libby Schaaf

Friendly fire II: “I don’t know that the travel ban makes sense. I don’t know that it’s that different because he’s banning people from African countries and we know that this variant is not only in South Africa, and South Africa has some of the world’s best scientists and epidemiologists and I think that’s why they found the variant there. This variant was found in Israel, it was found in Belgium, it was found in other European countries. Why aren’t there bans from those countries? Why just Africa? I think that has to be called out.” —”The View’s” Sunny Hostin

“Dr. Fauci, I think, is the most dangerous bureaucrat in the history of the country. You know, he talks … about hurting science. I don’t think anyone has hurt science, has hurt the credibility of the CDC, has hurt the credibility of doctors more than Dr. Fauci because throughout this pandemic, he’s been dishonest. He’s been political. He’s been partisan. And and the American people know it.” —Senator Ted Cruz

Non compos mentis: “I’m losing my Covid patience. I’ve tried to reason with the unvaxxed. I’ve directed some to medical pros. I don’t judge but hear them out and steer them to facts. The unvaxxed love to say it’s about choice. But you know who doesn’t have a choice? My 3 kids under 5. … The looney carnival barkers at the school board meetings DO NOT reflect where most parents are. Your unvaxxed status is creating new variants. So get your damn shot. Or, stay inside your house. But don’t mess with my kids.” —Congressman Eric Swalwell

What could possibly go wrong? “It’s time to admit that we have to go to war against COVID. Require vaccination universally. Have the military run it. If you don’t want to get vaccinated, you better be ready to prove your conscientious objector status in court.” —CNBC’s Jim Cramer

But hey, it could always be worse… “You can now see family and friends again in their homes, and use the bathroom, inside. Luxury.” —New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern

Judicial intimidation: “I hope the Supreme Court is listening to the people of the United States because … I think if you want to see a revolution go ahead, outlaw Roe v. Wade and see what the response is of the public, particularly young people.” —Senator Jeanne Shaheen

Thanks, Captain Obvious: “We tend to use [the word transitory] to mean that it won’t leave a permanent mark in the form of higher inflation. I think it’s probably a good time to retire that word.” —Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell

The BIG Lie: “Right now, sending your kid to preschool in the United States costs around $8,600 per year. Under my Build Back Better Act it will cost $0.” —Joe Biden

Grand delusions: “Thanksgiving is about gratitude. In 2021 it’s Biden supporters and liberals who seem grateful for America, for American institutions and ideals, for the American way of life. It’s Trumpists and today’s conservative movement who seem to be bitterly lacking in gratitude to America.” —Bill Kristol

Hardly in better hands: “Our role is not to be bound by the First Amendment, but our role is to serve a healthy public conversation and our moves are reflective of things that we believe lead to a healthier public conversation. The kinds of things that we do about this is, focus less on thinking about free speech, but thinking about how the times have changed.” —new Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal last year

Belly laugh of the week: “It’s time to stop demonizing ‘invasive’ species: Climate change is forcing some animals to move. Don’t call them ‘invasives.’” —Vox’s Marina Bolotnikova

And last… “It’s not hard to imagine that the day will soon come when the radical left begins touting abortion as a tool for managing population growth as the Chinese Communist Party has done for decades.” —Mike Pence

Sweden: Get Your Covid Vaccine Passport in a Chip in Your Hand — Christian Research Network

“Microchipping is voluntary… for now, but give it some time and the Covid tyrants will make it mandatory in order for people to participate in society.”

(Christina Laila – Gateway Pundit) Over the last few years some Swedish workers have volunteered to have microchips implanted in their hands so they no longer have to carry cash, ID, keys, gym passes etc.

Microchips are gaining popularity in Sweden and now Swedes are getting Covid vaccine passports implanted in their hands or elsewhere under their skin.

“Get your Covid certificate in a chip in your hand or elsewhere under the skin. It is increasingly popular to insert a chip into the body with different types of information and now you can also insert your Covid certificate in the chip.” – Aftonbladet, Sweden’s daily newspaper reported.  View article →

Is the New Testament historically reliable? | Cross Examined

We know the New Testament is historically reliable because of the Criteria of Authenticity. Dr. Mike Licona explains the differences between a sympathetic and unsympathetic source as well as how we judge independent or dependent sources, all of which provide the proof that we need to know whether or not the New Testament is a factual document.

The Ministry of Propaganda Then and Now: Youtube Censorship.

Gleichschaltung is a German word with a rich history. It stands for the coerced harmonisation of all forms of public expression with the official line. That concept is currently undergoing a renaissance, but not in the “captive nations” of the East.

Every morning after arriving in his office at the Propaganda Ministry, Dr. Goebbels would devote himself to the important task of disseminating a directive to all German media outlets, outlining what position on principal issues they were expected to take on that particular day. The media were instructed not only on what to say but – of equal importance – what not to mention. The system Goebbels set up worked like a charm. Under his meticulous supervision, in public discourse an imposing harmony of opinion reigned from one end of Germany to another, undisrupted by discordant voices.

One wishes that this mechanically imposed harmony, admired as it may have been by some, had come to an end in 1945. But a YouTube bulletin disseminated a few days ago reminds us that it did not.

YouTube users were curtly informed of the prevailing “Community Guidelines” on a topic which currently is at the top of the list of public concerns: The Covid-19 crisis. Here are the highlights of that guidance:

“COVID-19 medical misinformation policy

“YouTube doesn’t allow content about COVID-19 that poses a serious risk of egregious harm.

“YouTube doesn’t allow content that spreads medical misinformation that contradicts local health authorities’ (LHA) or the World Health Organization’s (WHO) medical information about COVID-19. This is limited to content that contradicts WHO [about the utter corruption of WHO, see here] or local health authorities’ guidance on:

“Social distancing and self-isolation guidelines, and

“The existence of COVID-19.”
