The Bible and its Story: Ehud Rescues Israel

After Othniel’s death the scattered and disunited Israelites were attacked by Eglon, king of Moab. From his lands east of the Dead Sea he marched northward, as the Israelites themselves had done, crossed the Jordan and captured Jericho. From this valley fortress he domineered over Cannan for eighteen years.

‎His tyranny was overthrown by Ehud, of the tribe of Benjamin, “a man left-handed.” Ehud was sent to bear a “present,” a tribute from Israel, to King Eglon. After proffering the gift and leaving the royal palace, he came suddenly back and besought a secret audience with the king. When they two were left alone, he came close as though to whisper. Eglon was a strong man, and shrewd and watchful. But Ehud by using his left hand deceived the king, and suddenly thrust a dagger into his body so fiercely that the fat of the gross body of the king closed over it completely. The wounded man could not draw out the weapon, and he fell dead, apparently untouched. Then Ehud fled and roused his countrymen against the Moabites, and slew or captured all of the race who had followed their king to the Canaanite side of Jordan. Against Israel was free.

January 13 – Look to Jesus | Reformed Perspective

“Therefore since we are surrounded… let us also lay aside… let us run… looking to Jesus the founder and perfecter of our faith…” – Hebrews 12:1-2

Scripture reading: Hebrews 11:30-12:2

In the previous chapters, the Hebrew believers had been encouraged to see the superiority of Christ. The entire message of the Old Testament had been a preparation for the coming of Christ. Now at the conclusion of this letter/sermon these same believers are called to a living and lively faith. As 11:6 teaches, without faith it is impossible to please God.  Faith is as Martin Luther once wrote “…a living daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times”.

In faith, God’s people are to fix their eyes on Jesus as the object of faith and salvation.  This means that while the cloud of Old Testament witnesses may inspire us, it is Jesus, both in His person and work, Who is to both encourage and enable us as we look to our Fatherland. We must rest and rely on His perfect obedience as if it were our own. By the merits of Christ Jesus, we run the race seeking the heavenly Jerusalem.

Are you facing a particular temptation? Look to Jesus! Are you distraught! Look to Jesus! Is doubt, complacency, self-absorption your trouble? Look to Jesus!

Suggestions for prayer

Ask our heavenly Father for grace to keep your eyes fixed on Jesus.

And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest.

Genesis 28:15

Do we need journeying mercies? Here are choice ones—God’s presence and preservation, In all places we need both of these, and in all places we shall have them if we go at the call of duty, and not merely according to our own fancy. Why should we look upon removal to another country as a sorrowful necessity when it is laid upon us by the divine will? In all lands the believer is equally a pilgrim and a stranger; and yet in every region the Lord is His dwelling place, even as He has been to His saints in all generations. We may miss the protection of an earthly monarch, but when God says, “I will keep thee,” we are in no real danger. This is a blessed passport for a traveler and a heavenly escort for an emigrant.

Jacob had never left his father’s room before; he had been a mother’s boy and not an adventurer tike his brother. Yet he went abroad, and God went with him. He had little luggage and no attendants; yet no prince ever journeyed with a nobler bodyguard. Even while he slept in the open field, angels watched over him, and the Lord God spoke to him. If the Lord bids us go, let us say with our Lord Jesus, “Arise, let us go hence.”

The Command to Hope — Daily Devotionals by Thoughts about God

The psalmist gives words of command to his soul.

Listen as your Father directs you in Romans 12:12.

Be joyful in hope.”

Hope is a promise of God, a position in him, and a command.

The Greek word translated hope means desiring good and confidently expecting to obtain it. Hope that is seen is not hope. Your assurance is in your Father that he is Lord of everything, even your challenges, opposition, and suffering. He knows the mysteries of your life, he knows what he’s doing, and he has a purpose for everything. Therefore, you can rest in him. Sometimes he stands as your only hope, but even so, be blessed with joyful hope and encouragement that he is holding your future.

The psalmist gives words of command to his soul.

My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us” (Psalm 62:5-8).

God commands hope in him, and what he commands, he provides for. Paul said,

Continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel” (Colossians 1:23).

In your circumstances that you can see, hope may fail you. That is the reason God gave you his Word and his promises.

Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope” (Romans 15:4).

Immerse yourself in his Word, like Hebrews 6:18-19.

By two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”

Be blessed as you take hold of God’s character, his unchangableness, and his promises with confidence. Be blessed with being sure that your Father cannot and will not lie to you, and he will never change his mind about you. Be blessed as you run to his firm hope as your strong and trustworthy anchor. Be blessed with continued faith in his goodness and with his great encouragement. In him you have the resources of the ages to press through walls of disappointment, self-protection, separation, and pain.

Be blessed with hope as God washes away disappointments with new vision and renewed God-directed “appointments” and expectation. God has appointed this season of refreshing and receiving for you. Receive his touch to restore the places that have been bruised, and broken, and shut down. Be blessed as you allow your Father to replace your burdens with his faith, your disappointments with his hope, and your doubts with his love.

Be blessed with the full purposes of God in re-forming and rebuilding you, which he planned before time to be released to you now. Be blessed to be saturated with renewed and restored life, so that hope deferred can no longer make you sick and hold you captive. Be blessed with all joy and peace in believing that God is doing this work by his Holy Spirit in you filling you with hope (Romans 15:13). Live in light that streams from the face of the God of hope. Be blessed as the light of his countenance shines the hope in him that does not disappoint. Receive the nurture, ministry, and full and abundant gifts of the God of hope.

Be blessed in the name of Christ Jesus, your hope
(Colossians 1:27; 1 Timothy 1:1; Psalm 71:15).

Put on the New Self — Daily Devotionals by Thoughts about God

“…and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” Ephesians 4:24

One of the biggest decisions we face at the beginning of each day is what we will wear. Well, no matter what we choose in the way of clothing, let’s make sure we choose to put on the new person God re-made us to be when we became Christians (Galatians 3:26-27). Those are the only clothes that will fit us eternally!

Dear Father, may people see the character and likeness of Jesus in me today. Lord Jesus, in your name I ask that you please guide my decisions and help me know how you would have me act in the situations I face today. Precious and powerful Holy Spirit, please fill me and continue your work in transforming me. Amen.

The Bible and its Story: Othniel

“Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia.” This was the first of their punishments. From Mesopotamia, the valley of the Euphrates, the ancient home of Abraham, there came a conquering army into Palestine. Just how severe was the oppression upon Israel, we are not told, nor whether the people submitted without resistance; but for eight years they served Chushan-rishathaim. Then there came forward the first of Israel’s deliverers, Othniel, the nephew of Caleb, the same who had wedded the brave old chieftain’s daughter, and who had succeeded him as the foremost warrior of Judah, Israel’s foremost tribe. Othniel came from his home in the southland where he had conquered a mysterious old city called Debir, “the city of books.” He summoned the people together.

‎The new leader had no such miraculous power or divine authority as had upheld Moses and Joshua. Yet, as we are told, “the spirit of the Lord came upon him.” Thus inspired, he went forth to war against Chushan-rishathaim, and was successful, and freed his countrymen. After that the land had peace for forty years under Othniel’s leadership. “And he judged Israel.”

What Happens to Your Soul When You Die? — Christian Research Network

(Kim Riddlebarger – Ligonier Ministries) We’ve all thought about it. What happens the moment we take our last breath, our heart stops beating, and our soul departs from our now dead body? Truth be told, most of us fear dying, even if we do not fear death. Dying is often a painful struggle. Dying often occurs in a sterile, clinical environment and is usually an ugly process. However, by trusting in the promise that death means entrance into eternal life in the presence of the Lord, as well as trusting in the power of Christ to raise the dead, Christians need not fear the outcome of death even if we experience trepidation regarding the process of dying.

Stories and legends about death and dying abound. This is the case, in part, because the Scriptures do not describe the process of dying, although they do speak of several individuals who died but were raised back to life by Jesus. Lazarus comes to mind (John 11) among others (e.g., the widow of Nain’s son in Luke 7:11–17). But we do not possess any firsthand account (including from Lazarus) of what these people experienced when they died. We can only but wonder what Lazarus was thinking when he died a second time, this time to enter eternal life. Now, we do know what our resurrection bodies will be like, since Paul gives us a remarkable description of the complete transformation that takes place when Christ returns and we are raised imperishable (1 Cor. 15:35–49). But there is not much biblical data on the intermediate state—that period of time when the souls of the believing dead await the resurrection of their bodies and the final and complete overturning of the curse (death). View article →

Supreme Court Sets Dangerous Precedent Of Letting The American People Make Medical Decisions For Themselves — The Babylon Bee

U.S.—The SCOTUS has struck down Biden’s vaccine mandates on the grounds that they are unconstitutional. Experts say this sets a dangerous precedent of letting individuals make their own medical decisions.

“What am I supposed to do now that I don’t have private companies working with the Federal government to force me to inject a foreign substance into my body?” said Linda Waddlebum, a concerned mother of 6 cats. “So dangerous and shortsighted. How will I stay healthy? I don’t even recognize this America anymore.”

In response to the court’s decision, a large group of protestors has gathered outside of the Supreme Court building. “Pfizer knows best! What they inject, I can’t object!” they chanted while ripping up copies of the constitution. “Give us petty tyranny or give us death! Abolish the Supreme Court!”

“You can’t give people choices! What if they make the wrong one? One that isn’t what I wanted them to do?” said Waddlebum. “Next thing you know, people will decide to send their kids back to school and return to work in person without masks.”

At publishing time, people were dangerously continuing on with their lives making the best medical decisions possible for themselves and their families. They were even able to make these decisions without fear of losing their livelihood.

As Queen Strips Prince Andrew Of Royal Titles Ahead Of Pedophile Sex Trial, Are Jeffrey Epstein’s Other Past Associates Beginning To Sweat It Out? — Now The End Begins

Prince Andrew was today stripped of his military titles, royal patronages and HRH honorific by the Queen, who said he will have to face his sexual assault lawsuit as a ‘private citizen’.

By now it’s a foregone conclusion that Prince Andrew had some sort of a sexual relationship with his then-underaged accuser, former Jeffrey Epstein recruit Virginia Roberts. Especially seeing that he offered millions to make her go away, and she refused to accept the hush money. But the real question is what might other former associates of Jeffrey Epstein, people like Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, actors Kevin Spacey and Chris Tucker, astronaut John Glenn, and yes, even Donald Trump, be thinking as they watch the entire world of Prince Andrew coming crashing down around him? Having Ghislaine Maxwell murdered in her cell won’t stop this one.

Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.” Ecclesiastes 8:11 (KJB)

I think that who did with to whom in regards to spending time with Jeffrey Epstein goes quite deep indeed. Why else would Epstein be abandoned by his prisons guards as the video cameras inexplicably stop working at precisely the moment when Epstein decides to ‘kill himself’? Did you know that both those guards that left Epstein alone and falsified records were found not guilty of any wrongdoing? Hmm. So it’s looking like Prince Andrew is going to be the sacrifice thrown into the volcano to appease the gods, but what if it doesn’t stop there? Some very powerful men are suddenly not sleeping so soundly.

Virginia Roberts claims Bill Clinton took a romantic jaunt in 2002 to convicted pedophile pal Jeffrey Epstein’s “orgy island”.

Duke of York is stripped of ALL his military titles and royal patronages, will no longer use HRH in official capacity and is told he will have to face sex assault lawsuit as a ‘private citizen’

FROM THE DAILY MAIL UK: The Duke of York was born an HRH but will no longer be allowed to use it in any capacity, signalling his mother’s attempt to distance the Royal Family from the ninth in line to the throne as he faces a humiliating trial in the US.

The decision to shred Andrew’s military ties is likely to be particularly painful for the Royal Navy veteran, who served with distinction as a helicopter pilot during the Falklands War.

It comes after a day after a US judge unequivocally rejected the prince’s bid to have his sex abuse case thrown out, leaving him facing the prospect of being cross-examined for seven hours on camera with embarrassing questions on everything from his sex life and ‘private parts’. Andrew has been urged to settle out of court with his accuser royal’s accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre ‘for the sake of his mother’, who celebrates her Platinum Jubilee this year. But he could face difficulties given Ms Giuffre is said to be pushing for ‘her day in court’.

Buckingham Palace announced the Queen’s decision to cast Andrew out of the royal fold in a statement released this afternoon.

‘With The Queen’s approval and agreement, The Duke of York’s military affiliations and Royal patronages have been returned to The Queen,’ it read. ‘The Duke of York will continue not to undertake any public duties and is defending this case as a private citizen.’

‘With The Queen’s approval and agreement, The Duke of York’s military affiliations and Royal patronages have been returned to The Queen,’ it read. ‘The Duke of York will continue not to undertake any public duties and is defending this case as a private citizen.’

A royal source said the issue had been widely discussed with the royal family, making it likely that the Prince of Wales, as well as Andrew, were involved in crisis talks over the matter. The source said the military posts would be redistributed to other members of the royal family.

The Palace said previously that the duke’s military appointments were in abeyance after he stepped down from public duties in 2019. But, prior to today, he still retained the roles, including the position of Colonel of the Grenadier Guards, one of the oldest and most emblematic regiments in the British Army. READ MORE

Pfizer Announces Revolutionary New Vaccine To Protect Against Free Thinking — The Babylon Bee

GROTON, CT—Thanks to generous funding from the Biden Administration, Pfizer Research & Development has announced a vaccine with 98% effectiveness against independent thinking, self-reliance, and general desires for liberty.

“Thanks to a $4 billion taxpayer-funded grant, our most scientific scientists have successfully created a vaccine to eradicate the virulent strain of independent thought sweeping through our nation,” said Pfizer’s head of research and development, Bob Petri. “Natural immunity to independent thinking exists, but that requires a combination of lax parenting, progressive college education, and self-deception regarding the role of government. Pfizer now offers a simpler solution.”

The head researcher continued, reminding nervous journalists that this virus has been in circulation through American communities since 1776, but became more prolific some time in 2016 due to a variant dubbed “MAGAcron.”

“In fact,” said Mr. Petri, “50% of all January 6 protesters were found to be infected with this dangerous virus. The other 50% were possibly immune because they were all FBI agents.”

“It Has to Stop” – Joe Biden Tells Social Media Companies to “Deal with” Covid “Misinformation and Disinformation” (VIDEO) — The Gateway Pundit

What First Amendment?

Joe Biden is now telling social media companies to censor posts he disagrees with.

Joe Biden on Thursday could barely make it through his Covid presser from his fake White House set in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

Biden called on social media companies to silence opposition to his Covid mandates and tyranny.

“I make a special appeal to social media companies and media outlets — please deal with the misinformation and disinformation that’s on your shows. It has to stop,” said Biden.

Kamala Harris Delivers Word Salad When Asked If Biden Regime Needs to Shift Away From Their Covid Strategy of Mandates and Tyranny (VIDEO) — The Gateway Pundit

What did we just watch?

Kamala Harris sat down for a one-on-one interview with “Today” host Craig Melvin to discuss the Biden Regime’s Covid strategy.

Craig Melvin asked Harris if the White House needs to shift away from their strategy of Covid mandates and tyranny.

“At what point does the Administration say, ‘you know what? this strategy isn’t working, we’re gonna change strategy’….Is it time?” Craig Melvin asked Harris.

Kamala Harris’ answer proved she is unqualified for the job.

“It is time for us to do what we have been doing and that time is everyday. Everyday it is time for us to agree that there are things and tools that are available to us to slow this thing down and so right now we know we still have a number of people that is in the millions of Americans who have not been vaccinated and could be vaccinated and we are urging them to get vaccinated because it will save their life,” Harris said.

The look on Craig Melvin’s face said it all.

Supreme Court Blocks Biden’s OSHA Vaxx Mandate | ZeroHedge News

Despite the misinformation spewed firth by Justice Sotomayor, The US Supreme Court has block the Biden administration’s vaccine-or-test rule for US businesses, but allows vaccine mandate for most health care workers.

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) argue against the Department of Labor, in the Court’s first hearing, that:

“OSHA’s sweeping regulatory dictate,” will “irreparably injure the very businesses that Americans have counted on to widely distribute COVID-19 vaccines and protective equipment to save lives—and to keep them fed, clothed, and sustained during this now two-year-long pandemic.”

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rule would have required 80 million workers to get shots or periodic tests.

The OSHA ruling vote was 6-3 with Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagan in dissent.

“Permitting OSHA to regulate the hazards of daily life – simply because most Americans have jobs and face those same risks while on the clock – would significantly expand OSHA’s regulatory authority without clear congressional authorization.”

Chief Justice John Roberts, who was appointed by President George W. Bush, said during arguments that he thinks it’s hard to argue that the 1970 law governing OSHA “gives free reign to the agencies to enact such broad regulation.”

The court allowed a separate rule to take effect requiring shots for workers in nursing homes, hospitals and other facilities that receive Medicare and Medicaid payments from the federal government (which will be interesting given that Californioa just allowed COVID positive healthcare workers to go back to work).

The vaccine mandate for healthcare workers vote was 5-4 with Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch, and Barrett in dissent.

Great Barrington Declaration

913,000+ signatures

The Great Barrington Declaration – As infectious disease epidemiologists and public health scientists we have grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of the prevailing COVID-19 policies, and recommend an approach we call Focused Protection.

Coming from both the left and right, and around the world, we have devoted our careers to protecting people. Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health. The results (to name a few) include lower childhood vaccination rates, worsening cardiovascular disease outcomes, fewer cancer screenings and deteriorating mental health – leading to greater excess mortality in years to come, with the working class and younger members of society carrying the heaviest burden. Keeping students out of school is a grave injustice.

Keeping these measures in place until a vaccine is available will cause irreparable damage, with the underprivileged disproportionately harmed.

Fortunately, our understanding of the virus is growing. We know that vulnerability to death from COVID-19 is more than a thousand-fold higher in the old and infirm than the young. Indeed, for children, COVID-19 is less dangerous than many other harms, including influenza.

As immunity builds in the population, the risk of infection to all – including the vulnerable – falls. We know that all populations will eventually reach herd immunity – i.e.  the point at which the rate of new infections is stable – and that this can be assisted by (but is not dependent upon) a vaccine. Our goal should therefore be to minimize mortality and social harm until we reach herd immunity.

The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity, is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk. We call this Focused Protection.

Adopting measures to protect the vulnerable should be the central aim of public health responses to COVID-19. By way of example, nursing homes should use staff with acquired immunity and perform frequent testing of other staff and all visitors. Staff rotation should be minimized. Retired people living at home should have groceries and other essentials delivered to their home. When possible, they should meet family members outside rather than inside. A comprehensive and detailed list of measures, including approaches to multi-generational households, can be implemented, and is well within the scope and capability of public health professionals.

Those who are not vulnerable should immediately be allowed to resume life as normal. Simple hygiene measures, such as hand washing and staying home when sick should be practiced by everyone to reduce the herd immunity threshold. Schools and universities should be open for in-person teaching. Extracurricular activities, such as sports, should be resumed. Young low-risk adults should work normally, rather than from home. Restaurants and other businesses should open. Arts, music, sport and other cultural activities should resume. People who are more at risk may participate if they wish, while society as a whole enjoys the protection conferred upon the vulnerable by those who have built up herd immunity.

McConnell Decimates Biden’s Unhinged ‘Voting Rights’ Deception

“The president’s rant was incorrect, incoherent, and beneath his office.”

Mark Alexander

Joe Biden’s 20 January 2021 inaugural address was full of, well, you know, a plethora of fake sentiments pledging that he and Kamala Harris would be the “The Great Uniters™.”

Predictably, a New York second after concluding those remarks, Biden began an unprecedented “slash and burn” campaign, making clear that his regime was going to do everything possible to disunite the nation. Of course, that was predictable because the Democrat Party is built on a foundation of hate and division — for generations, “divide and conquer” has been the party’s brand. Before that inauguration, Biden and Harris spent the previous six months actively fomenting racial division centered on their BIG Lie that the nation was under a “systemic racism” siege.

This week, thinking they would be riding on an approval polling bounce after the Demos’ J6 Capitol protest anniversary celebration, Biden and Harris went down to Georgia to promote their so-called “voter rights” legislation, which is actually designed to ensure massive voter fraud to guarantee a permanent Democrat executive and congressional triad.

But there was no bounce — in fact, Biden’s approval is now at a record low. That would explain why Georgia’s biggest voter fraud advocate, leftist Stacey Abrams, was a no-show, apparently due to a “scheduling conflict.” (@POTUS #ROFLMAO!) Other leftist Georgia “voter rights” groups also boycotted Biden.

By the way, for some reason Biden et al. did not mention that other notable January anniversary — the day they seeded the fake news that launched the phony “Russia collusion” investigation.

The response to Biden’s hateful remarks by the few on the Left who still embrace reality was swift.

Former Demo presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard declared: “Hillary’s calling tens of millions of Americans deplorables was divisive & disgusting. But Biden has gone further, calling those who disagree with his actions & policies domestic enemies, traitors, and racists. Biden promised to unite us, but he is doing all he can to divide us.”

Even leftist Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) conceded mildly, “Perhaps the president went a little too far in his rhetoric.”

But, right on cue, Biden’s spokesmouth, Jen Psaki, declared, “I know there has been a lot of claim of the offensive nature of the speech yesterday, which is hilarious on many levels, given how many people sat silently over the last four years for the former president.” Right. Not sure what silence she finds hilarious given the Demos’ now-exposed deep-state coup to take down the Trump presidency, with the full support of their Leftmedia platforms.

In stark contrast to Joe Biden’s demented rhetoric, stalwart Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is a statesman of the first order. In typical form, he issued a fitting rebuttal to Biden, which is printed in full below, and can be viewed here.

Sen. McConnell:

Twelve months ago, a newly inaugurated President Biden stood on the West Front of the Capitol and said this: “My whole soul is in this: bringing America together, uniting our people, and uniting our nation.” Yesterday, the same man delivered a deliberately divisive speech that was designed to pull our country farther apart. Twelve months ago, this president said we should “see each other not as adversaries, but as neighbors.” Yesterday, he called millions of Americans his domestic “enemies.” Twelve months ago, this president called on Americans to “join forces, stop the shouting, and lower the temperature.” Yesterday, he shouted that if you disagree with him, you’re George Wallace. If you don’t pass the laws he wants, you’re Bull Connor. And if you oppose giving Democrats untrammeled one-party control of the country, well, you’re Jefferson Davis. Twelve months ago, this president said that “disagreement must not lead to disunion.” But, yesterday, he invoked the bloody disunion of the Civil War to demonize Americans who disagree with him. He compared a bipartisan majority of senators to literal traitors.

How profoundly unpresidential. I have known, liked, and personally respected Joe Biden for many years. I did not recognize the man at that podium yesterday.

American voters did not give President Biden a mandate for very much. He got a tied Senate and negative coattails in the House. The narrowest majorities in over a century. This president did not get a mandate to transform America or reshape society. But he did arguably did get a mandate to do the one central thing he campaigned on: Bridge a divided country. Lower the temperature. Dial down the perpetual air of crisis in our politics. That is the one central promise that Joe Biden made. It is the one job citizens actually hired him to do. It is the one project that would have actually been consistent with the Congress that voters elected.

But President Biden has chosen to fail his own test. The president’s rant yesterday was incorrect, incoherent, and beneath his office.

He used the phrase “Jim Crow 2.0” to demagogue a law that makes the franchise more accessible than in his own state of Delaware. He blasted Georgia’s procedures regarding local elections officials while pushing national legislation with almost identical language on that issue. The president implied things like widely popular voter ID laws are “totalitarian” on the same day Washington DC’s Democratic mayor told citizens to bring both a photo ID and a vaccine card anytime they leave their house. The president repeatedly invoked the January 6th riot while himself using irresponsible, delegitimizing rhetoric that undermines our democracy.

The sitting president of the United States of America compared American states to “totalitarian states.” He said our country will be an “autocracy” if he does not get his way. The world saw our sitting commander-in-chief propagandize against his own country to a degree that would have made Pravda blush.

There was no consistent standard behind anything the president said. He trampled through some of the most sensitive and sacred parts of our nation’s past. He invoked times when activists bled, and when soldiers died. All to demagogue voting laws that are more expansive than what Democrats have in his own home state.

Georgia has more days of early voting than Delaware or New York. Georgia has no-excuse absentee voting which Delaware and New York do not have. If Georgia or Texas present Jim Crow emergencies, then so do a whole lot of Democrat-run states. The Senate Democratic leader is going on cable TV and saying Georgia is “greatly restricting or eliminating early voting.” This is a lie. Provably false. Georgia has more early voting than New York. The Democratic leader has tried to fearmonger about one rural Georgia county that condensed multiple voting locations into one. Well, this county is overwhelmingly red! They were clearly not involved in trying to suppress Democratic votes. 70% Republican in that one county in 2020.

Take a step back for one minute. President Biden’s story is that democracy is on death’s door, but he spent nine months chasing a reckless taxing and spending spree before addressing it? It must not be that much of an emergency.

Citizens are meant to believe a return of Jim Crow is on the table, but this was only President Biden’s sixth priority, after he was blocked from spending $5 trillion on windmills and welfare? Democrats’ own behavior refutes their false hysteria.

Twelve months ago, the president said that “politics need not be a raging fire destroying everything in its path.” That was just 12 months ago. Yesterday, he poured a giant can of gasoline on that fire. Twelve months ago, the president said, “Every disagreement doesn’t have to be a cause for total war.” But yesterday, he said anyone who opposes smashing the Senate and letting Democrats rewrite election law is a domestic “enemy” and a traitor like Jefferson Davis.

One week ago, President Biden gave a January 6th lecture about not stoking political violence. Yesterday, with the world’s largest megaphone, he invoked the literal Civil War and said we are on the doorstep of “autocracy.” He talked about domestic “enemies.” Rhetoric unbecoming of a president of the United States.

In less than a year, “restoring the soul of America” has become “agree with me, or you’re a bigot.” From lowering the temperature to invoking totalitarian states and the Civil War. This inflammatory rhetoric was not an attempt to persuade skeptical Democratic or Republican senators. In fact, you could not invent a better advertisement for the legislative filibuster than a president abandoning rational persuasion for pure demagoguery.

A president shouting that 52 senators and millions of Americans are racist unless he gets whatever he wants is proving exactly why the Framers built the Senate to check his power. This whole display is the best possible argument for preserving the Senate rules that extend deliberation, force bipartisan compromise, and let cooler heads prevail. Nothing proves it better than this episode. It offers a perfect case study in why Senator Biden was right about the filibuster and President Biden is wrong.

One respected scholar explained it this way: “The smallest majority we’ve ever seen in our politics is trying to change the rules for how people get elected in every state. … That’s just about the best argument for the filibuster you could possibly imagine.”

Mr. President — the citizens of the greatest country in the world deserve for their elected officials to treat them like grown-ups. The adults of America deserve to hear from the adults in Washington DC.

So let me close with some basic truths. Our country is more divided than we should be. No doubt.

In recent years, I have vocally criticized people across the political spectrum who have sought to legitimize elections when they win and delegitimize democracy when they are polling badly or when they lose. I criticized top Democrats’ hysteria after 2016, when their rhetoric had 66% of Democrats across America falsely convinced that Russia had hacked our voting machines and changed the tallies. I criticized Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats who spent the run-up to 2020 hyping conspiracy theories and suggesting the election would be presumptively illegitimate if their side lost it.

In December 2020 and January of last year, our side of the aisle defended our constitutional process despite political pressure and a literal mob. But now it is President Biden, Leader Schumer, and other Washington Democrats who don’t like their poll numbers. So they are reversing their tune yet again. The people who spent November 2020 through January 2021 preaching sermons about the strength and sanctity of our democracy are now undertaking to delegitimize the next election in case they lose it.

We have a sitting pPresident invoking the Civil War, shouting about totalitarianism, and labeling millions of Americans his domestic “enemies.” We have a Senate Democratic leader who now frequently calls American elections a “rigged game.”

Mr. President — this will not be repaired with more lies, more outrage, and more rule-breaking. Unfortunately, President Biden has rejected the better angels of our nature. So it is the Senate’s responsibility to protect the country.

This institution was constructed as a firewall against exactly this kind of rage and false hysteria. It falls to the Senate to put America on a better track. It falls to us. So this institution cannot give in to dishonorable tactics. We cannot surrender to recklessness. We have to stand up, stand strong, protect the Senate, and defend our country.

Biden’s ‘Operation Snail Speed’

Treatments and therapeutics take a back seat to vax and mask mandates.

Nate Jackson

Here’s a brief history of the Democrat response to the coronavirus:

  • Walk the busy city streets telling us there’s nothing to worry about
  • Downplay the idea of masks
  • Lockdown the country for “15 days to flatten the curve”
  • Refuse or delay every attempt to reopen
  • Mandate masks everywhere, even outdoors where the virus doesn’t spread
  • Mock and sow doubt about the vaccines simply because Donald Trump’s Operation Warp Speed played into their development
  • Blame the president for every COVID death
  • Use all the mayhem Democrats caused to defeat Donald Trump in 2020
  • Claim credit for Trump’s vaccines
  • Cajole and shame people before eventually mandating that everyone get the vaccines they politicized a few months earlier
  • Censor and ban unapproved discussion about the vaccines or forms of treatment
  • Require masks for the vaccinated even after saying vaccination was the way out of the pandemic
  • Lie about the pandemic being one of the unvaccinated
  • Suddenly learn that cloth and surgical masks do next to nothing, but stand by them anyway
  • Absolve the president of any blame for a single COVID death

Do you sense a pattern? We sure do — Democrats say or do whatever they think politically benefits them. This long ago stopped being about anyone’s health or legitimate science.

The latest from the Biden administration is what Fox News medical correspondent Marc Siegel, M.D., calls “Operation Snail Speed,” which he says “is not bringing us either therapeutics or tests in a timely enough manner to fight omicron.”

He’s talking about the administration’s slow and inadequate effort to focus on treating rather than preventing COVID. Last March, Democrats passed the American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion economic “stimulus” package meant to provide money for COVID relief. Yet The Wall Street Journal editorial board notes that “less than 1% of the spending was allocated for therapies.” The result, the Journal says, is “persistent treatment shortage and countless preventable deaths.”

This week, says the Journal, the administration “ordered another 600,000 doses of GlaxoSmithKline and Vir Biotechnology’s monoclonal antibody,” and a week ago “it increased its order of Pfizer’s antiviral Paxlovid by 10 million.” Last summer, the administration ordered 1.7 million doses of Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics’ antiviral molnupiravir before increasing that to 3.1 million in November. It has refused or minimized other treatments, such as GSK-Vir’s monoclonal that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis went around the administration to order for his own state.

With high numbers of cases and hospitalizations, why is the administration so stubbornly focused on forcing vaccinations rather than working for treatments? Omicron has proved to evade vaccination — even after a third shot — more readily than other strains, though infection tends to be far more mild than the Delta variant last summer. Why not focus on treatment? Why not give natural immunity its due?

Go back and read the list at the top of this article. Treatment and natural immunity don’t boost Democrats politically.

The Journal’s editors put it this way: “Had the Administration ordered more treatments sooner, more would have been available this winter. The Trump Administration’s Operation Warp Speed accelerated vaccine development and production by placing advance orders so a supply would be available as soon as the FDA approved a vaccine. President Biden could have done the same for treatments but didn’t. Instead, the Administration has focused relentlessly on masking, testing and vaccines with therapies as a fourth priority.”

Joe Biden has failed his own test. Americans shouldn’t have to rely on a president or his administration for our health, but presidents do play a big role in modern life. Regardless, we should learn to live with an endemic virus.

The Steele Dossier and the Damage Done

On the five-year anniversary of this century’s greatest media scandal, we reflect on what we’ve lost.

Douglas Andrews

Lost amid the cascading failures of the Biden administration is an anniversary that the Democrats, the FBI, and the mainstream media would just as soon not celebrate: the five-year anniversary of that steaming pile of deceit known as the Steele dossier. The Wall Street Journal’s James Freeman calls it “the greatest media scandal of our age,” and we think he’s spot-on. He writes:

Outlets like CNN and BuzzFeed flogged a bogus dossier of salacious claims funded by the Hillary Clinton campaign, even while admitting they didn’t know whether the dossier’s allegations against Donald Trump were true or false. It wasn’t necessarily that reporters had mistaken fake news for the real stuff — they simply didn’t care or acknowledge that they had an obligation to vet anti-Trump claims before disseminating them.

There’s a tendency these days to move beyond the dossier, to minimize its meaning and its destructive influence on American politics — to say nothing of the psychological damage it did to the American electorate. Think about it: In the wake of Donald Trump’s stunning victory in the 2016 election, an amazing 67% of Democrat voters, most of whom had been beguiled by whispers about the mysterious dossier and by the whole Trump-Russia collusion yarn, were convinced not just that Donald Trump had conspired with Vladimir Putin to hack Democrat Party email accounts and spread damaging truths about the ugly inner workings of their party. No, no, that overwhelming majority of Democrat voters actually believed that Russia had hacked our voting machines and changed the vote totals to elect Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton.

That’s some certifiable madness, especially given that there was never a scintilla of truth to the claim. And it laid the foundation for an unending attack on the Trump presidency — an attack waged on social, political, and legal turf, and an attack whose years-long investigation yielded not a single criminal conviction for conspiring with Russia.

And Democrats have the audacity to categorically dismiss Republican questions about how, exactly, Basement Joe Biden got more population-adjusted votes in 2020 than Rock Star Barack Obama. (REMEMBER: This election wasn’t decided by seven million votes, as Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats want you to believe; it was by decided by a razor-thin margin of 43,000 votes spread across just three key states: Arizona, Georgia, and Wisconsin. And with credible and highly detailed allegations of a massive ballot-harvesting operation now being investigated in Georgia, that ice floe of electoral certitude isn’t what it used to be.)

From the “Now They Tell Us” files, even The New York Times is quietly coming clean: “It seems we can clearly see now that the Steele dossier should never have had the life and the impact that it did,” said a Times podcast host named Michael Barbaro last month. “It should never have been used in the wiretap warrant for Carter Page, should never have been read into the congressional record, or featured on prime time segments on cable news.”

Ditto The Washington Post, whose media critic, Erik Wemple, also noted last month, “CNN, MSNBC, Mother Jones, the McClatchy newspaper chain and various pundits showered credibility upon the dossier without corroboration — and found other topics to cover when a forceful debunking arrived in December 2019 via a report from Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz.”

Indeed, no institution in American life is less inclined toward introspection than the fourth estate.

Here we are, then: Five years later, and Special Counsel John Durham is still investigating the investigators. And conservatives, libertarians, and sensible centrists can file this fiasco away as one more reason to never again trust the mainstream media.

If only life weren’t so nasty, brutish, and short, and if our nation weren’t beset by a two-tiered justice system, RussiaGate co-conspirators like James Comey, Andrew McCabe, and Peter Strzok would be behind bars. And Melania Trump would’ve chosen just the right evening gown for her husband’s second inaugural.

If only.

Supply Chained

After Biden “fixed it,” there are still record numbers of cargo ships waiting at sea, creating empty store shelves.

Lewis Morris

Have you had trouble finding items at the store that you normally expected would be in stock? Have you been told on further inquiry from store personnel — if you can find anyone — that there is no concrete answer as to when those items would be available?

Welcome to 2021 2022. But don’t blame this entirely on Omicron. Yes, the latest vaccine-impervious variant of the China Virus is taking its toll among the working populace, and there are large numbers of people out of work due to illness or exposure. But a vast majority of these people will be back to work soon. The real reason for the inability to keep American grocery and consumer goods stocked is because of our broken supply chain. And that is an issue going back many months.

But wait. Joe Biden solved the nation’s supply chain problem at the end of 2021. He said so. And since all the discussion around the issue was focused on whether holiday gifts would arrive on time, we were led by our president and his media parrots to believe that after Christmas, the supply chain bottleneck was broken. Back to business as usual.

Well, guess what? Not only were we lied to about the state of the supply chain, but the country is now facing exactly the problem we most feared back in September. Last week, there were 105 ships waiting for Los Angeles or Long Beach berths. That is the largest shipping traffic jam the West Coast has ever seen, and it’s happening at a time of year no one would ever expect such problems.

Only a small number of these ships are within 40 miles of port. The rest are scattered all over the world, waiting for their number to be called. It is certainly better to have all these ships disbursed. The ecological impact is minimized, except down near the Baja peninsula, where many of them are congregating. The negative impact on the Biden administration might be minimized as well, since there is less opportunity for a photo op of the flotilla of cargo ships waiting to come into port.

Biden wants the public to believe that 2021 was an economic success story. But it wasn’t by any measure. There is a flotilla of cargo ships waiting to unload into ports with unreasonably strict union-set hours, where those containers sit waiting for overland shippers to arrive, which can be unpredictable since drivers and loaders are hard to find, thanks to the federal government’s foolhardy intervention into the labor market.

The extensive media coverage of empty store shelves around the country is a big story. And there’s perhaps no better metaphor for Biden’s presidency so far.

The president tried to pass off 2021 as an economic success, claiming huge numbers of jobs created and large wage gains in the hospitality and retails sectors, outpacing all other industries. We noted last week that the latter is not something to brag about. People in low-wage job sectors are leaving their jobs because the only way to gain wage parity in an inflationary economy is to change jobs.

As for the former, record numbers of jobs created need to be seen in perspective. According to the Biden fanboys at The Washington Post, “Relative to the size of the workforce, it’s only the 11th best calendar year since record-keeping began in 1939.” And here’s the kicker: “The economy lost 22.4 million jobs at the height of the coronavirus lockdowns. When you account for the 12.3 million jobs regained in 2020 as businesses reopened, plus the 6.4 million added in 2021, the economy is still missing 3.6 million jobs.” Even that would only get us back to where we were two years ago; it would not put us where population growth and other factors demand we be. Hence, millions of job openings and empty store shelves.

We can do better, much better. But we’re going to need different leadership.

Don’t Turn Texas Into California

Meta is leasing office space in downtown Austin, sparking talk about a potential exodus from Silicon Valley.

Emmy Griffin

Billboards have gone up in downtown Austin announcing that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is moving to town. Meta has leased several floors of a new skyscraper, and as soon as the building is complete, employees will be moving in.

San Francisco, home of Silicon Valley, has turned into a dystopian nightmare. The city’s policies have left residents and businesses prey to constant car break-ins, property damage, and theft. Townspeople have compared the metropolis to Gotham, the crime-ridden fictional city from Batman. One cannot blame businesses and residents for wanting to escape.

At this point it is merely speculation that Meta may move its headquarters to the Lone Star State, but either way, this encampment of Meta employees is not necessarily good news for Texas. Facebook is not friendly to conservative voices, including The Patriot Post. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been dragged before the Senate several times to explain why his company is censoring conservatives and acting like a publisher instead of the platform it claims to be. Facebook, along with Twitter, had the audacity to deplatform Donald Trump after last year’s January 6 riot. The former president has not been reinstated.

If the company is indeed moving out of California, there is much cause for mockery. California taxes are high. And with the recent move by the state legislature to move forward with a universal healthcare plan encompassing the entire state, the burden of paying for this is going to lean heavily on businesses and the wealthy. According to Business Insider, “Under the proposal, businesses that make at least $2 million in annual revenue would be subject to a 2.3% payroll tax.” This would significantly cut into Facebook’s bottom line.

It would also be very hypocritical of Facebook to move to a state that has what leftists call “voter suppression laws” (but what people of sense simply call voter integrity laws). Texas, not unlike Georgia, requires people to have an ID to vote. But Democrat “cheating rights” have come center stage these past few weeks, with President Joe Biden having galavanted to Georgia on Tuesday to give a speech racist tirade on the subject.

Perhaps turning Texas blue is really Facebook’s ultimate plan. After all, we saw what happened to Georgia once Hollywood moved in. The once reliably red state turned purple with the influx of Californians. If Democrats take over Texas, it would swing presidential elections. If a Democrat won both California and Texas, it would be mighty tough — near impossible — for a Republican to win the Electoral College.

Meta’s Austin-based employees would do well to remember that the reason Texas is a good place to live and work is because it hasn’t been totally destroyed by leftist policies. If you move to Texas, don’t turn it into California by voting for destruction.

Michelle Obama Offers Hope to Dems in 2022

The former first lady is pushing the false “voter rights” narrative to stave off a November shellacking.

Thomas Gallatin

Democrat desperation heading into the midterms is beginning to reach a fever pitch, as Joe Biden went down to Georgia to rail against the Peach State’s election integrity laws and sell his big “voting rights” lie. But Biden’s time machine failed to transport him back to Jim Crow-era Georgia in every respect except within his own diminishing mind. As he attempted to paint Republican efforts to prevent election abuse and fraud as a blatant and racist attempt to take away the right to vote from minorities, it’s clear that the vast majority of Americans aren’t buying into the misleading rhetoric. Indeed, judging by his tanking popularity, Biden may just be about the worst Democrat politician to sell such a nonsensical narrative of “democracy under threat” — well, second only to his “president,” Kamala Harris, who’s outpacing Biden in unpopularity.

The trouble for Biden is that it’s not the party’s base he needs to convince, but rather Democrat Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema. He needs them to buy into the nonsense notion that eliminating the Senate filibuster so as to pass major voting legislation is the way to “save democracy.” In short, rejecting the Founders’ wisely designed framework of checks and balances to limit governmental abuse of power will give rise to a form of government they explicitly rejected. It’s sheer lunacy, but with a willing and sympathetic press, Biden and the Democrats continue to get away with such fantasy.

So, what do the desperate Democrats do? If they were interested in being rational and honest, they’d immediately drop their hyper-partisan attempt to unilaterally transform American election law and focus on issues that matter most to Americans, such as addressing spiking inflation, shoring up a COVID-ravaged jobs market, or tackling the growing supply chain crisis. But Democrats have chosen to go all in on federalizing elections and recently called in one of their biggest guns to support the cause.

Michelle Obama recently announced that her organization When We All Vote will be joining with 30 other organizations in an effort to get one million new voters registered before the 2022 election.

Predictably, Obama parroted Biden’s disingenuous Jim Crow narrative: “This type of voter suppression is not new. Generations of Americans have persevered through poll taxes, literacy tests and laws designed to strip away their power — and they’ve done it by organizing, by protesting and most importantly, by overcoming the barriers in front of them in order to vote. And now, we’ve got to do the same. We’ve got to vote like the future of our democracy depends on it. And we must give Congress no choice but to act decisively to protect the right to vote and make the ballot box more accessible for everyone.”

Of course, whenever Democrats say “the future of democracy is at stake,” what they really mean is that the future of the Democrat Party in control of government is at stake. That’s a far cry from the American election process being endangered. The notion that Americans freely voting for Republicans represents a threat to the democratic process is about as absurd as politics gets.

The more interesting angle here may be questions about what — or who — is at play for the future of the Democrat Party going into the 2024 presidential election. With Biden convincing ever more Americans that he’s too old and demented to continue to be propped up for another run, and with Harris sitting at near-record unlikability (even her top staff have been bailing on her), some Democrats are suddenly starry eyed for … Hillary Clinton. At 74 years old, Hillary’s a spring chicken compared to other Democrat leaders.

She also raised speculation with recent comments that were a pretty obvious jab at her own party. A Democrat majority, she said, “means nothing if we don’t have a Congress that will get things done, and we don’t have a White House that we can count on to be sane and sober and stable and productive.”

Bill Clinton has made some noise about her, too, recently calling her “the most qualified person to run for office in my lifetime, including me,” and proclaiming that the nation rejecting her in 2016 was “one of the most profound mistakes we ever made.” Hillary did, after all, recently and “tearfully” read her intended victory speech.

Then again, if Michelle, who’s far more popular among her party’s base, were to throw her hat into the ring … well, that just might be a game changer for the Party of the Donkey. That may be exactly the play — convincing Michelle, who has long maintained that she has no interest in seeking office, to change her mind and become the new Obama face of the party.

Top of the Fold

  • Biden’s approval sinks to new low: The latest Quinnipiac poll finds that just 33% of Americans approve of the job Joe Biden has done as he nears the one-year mark of his presidency. This low mark was matched by Donald Trump only after the January 6 Capitol riot. Independents give Biden a 25% approval, while only 28% of Hispanics, a demographic Democrats are counting on, give him a favorable rating. It’s gotten so bad for Biden that even his base is souring on him — their 87% approval in November has fallen 12 points, now sitting at 75%. Biden can thank his own dismal leadership on just about every major issue Americans care about: only 34% approval on the economy, 35% on foreign policy, and 39% on his handling of the pandemic. Furthermore, regarding his self-designation as a “unifier,” 49% of Americans say he’s “doing more to divide the country.” This clearly doesn’t bode well for the Democrat’ midterm chances.
  • McCarthy rejects J6 Committee: “As a representative and the leader of the minority party, it is with neither regret nor satisfaction that I have concluded to not participate with this select committee’s abuse of power that stains this institution today and will harm it going forward,” read House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s statement as he refused the request to be interviewed by Nancy Pelosi’s January 6 inquisition. “This committee is not conducting a legitimate investigation as Speaker Pelosi took the unprecedented action of rejecting the Republican members I named to serve on the committee,” McCarthy explained. “It is not serving any legislative purpose. The committee’s only objective is to attempt to damage its political opponents — acting like the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee one day and the DOJ the next.” McCarthy is now the third Republican lawmaker to refuse the J6 Committee.
  • CNN viewership drops nearly 90% in one year: It’s been all downhill for CNN following its early January 2021 numbers when it averaged 2.7 million viewers. Since then, the Leftmedia outlet has witnessed its audience plummet to an average of just 548,000 viewers this past week. The worst aspect of this drop for CNN is the demographic it has lost — nearly 90% of lost viewers are age 18-49, and only 73,000 of them tuned into the network last week. This precipitous slide follows Donald Trump’s exit from office as well as several scandals within the Leftmedia network, including one that led to ousting top-rated host Chris Cuomo.
  • Ex-CNN producer and alleged child-sex trafficker hit with civil suit: Speaking of CNN scandals, longtime producer John Griffin, who was recently fired following federal child-trafficking charges, has been hit with a $15 million civil suit to boot. Interestingly, Griffin was the producer for now ex-host Chris Cuomo. The suit, raised on behalf of a nine-year-old “Jane Doe,” alleges, “For several years prior to 2020, the defendant solicited young girls, including the minor plaintiff, for the purpose of knowingly persuading, inducing, enticing and coercing them to engage in sexual activity, sexual exploitation, and/or sexual trafficking.” Griffin faces life in prison if found guilty of the federal charges.
  • VA “transgender” teen sentenced for sexual assaults: At the height of parents clashing with the Loudoun County School Board in Virginia over its pushing of CRT and “transgender” ideology, a father being dramatically arrested became the dubious talking point for the Leftmedia to claim that parents were the problem. It later came out that the father was there to express his outrage and opposition to the school district’s “transgender” policy, a policy that led to his daughter being sexually assaulted in a school girls’ bathroom by a boy wearing a skirt. It was later learned that the male student was transferred to another school in the county, where he sexually assaulted another female student. The male student was recently found guilty and sentenced to a “locked residential program” where he will undergo constant psychiatric supervision and be registered as a sex offender.

“The president of the United State could have gone to Chicago or any other of the 5,400 schools that started off this year closed to send a clear signal that kids belong in the classroom. Instead, he was in Atlanta [Tuesday] delivering a speech that was so self-serving and out of touch that even Stacey Abrams kept her distance.” —House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy

“Twelve months ago, this president said disagreement must not lead to disunion. “If Biden is going to beat the pandemic rather than be undone by it, he is going to have to acknowledge the new reality, which is that our public policy is way too weighted toward a bunch of people who made the wrong choice. It’s his own Democratic constituencies — teachers unions, local governments, ultra-leftist Trump haters who refuse to let go of the culture war over the virus — who would continue to hold the country hostage to what now is a manageable public health risk. Global Economy Heading For “Mother Of All” Supply Chain Shocks As China Locks Down Ports | ZeroHedge News

Over the past month, as Wall Street turned increasingly optimistic on US growth alongside the Fed, with consensus (shaped by the Fed’s leaks and jawboning) now virtually certain of a March rate hike, we have been repeatedly warning that after a huge policy error in 2021 when the Fed erroneously said that inflation is “transitory” (it wasn’t), the central bank is on pace to make another just as big policy mistake in 2022 by hiking as many as 4 times and also running off its massive balance sheet… right into a global growth slowdown.

And, as we have also discussed in recent weeks, one place where this growth slowdown is emerging – besides the upcoming deterioration in US consumption where spending is now being funded to record rates by credit cards before it encounters a troubling air pocket – is China and its “covid-zero” policy in general, and its covid-locked down ports in particular.

But what until recently was a minority view confined to our modest website, has since expanded and as Bloomberg writes overnight, the effects of restrictions in China as the country maintains its Covid-zero policy “are starting to hit supply chains in the region.” As a result of the slow movement of goods through some of the country’s busiest and most important ports means shippers are now diverting to Shanghai, causing the types of knock-on delays at the world’s biggest container port that led to massive congestion bottlnecks last summer that eventually translated into a record number of container ships waiting off the coast of California, a glut that hasn’t been cleared to this day.

With sailing schedules already facing delays of about a week, freight forwarders warn of the impact on already back-logged gateways in Europe and the US and is also why HSBC economists are warning that the world economy could be headed for the “mother of all” supply chain shocks if the highly infectious omicron variant which is already swamping much of the global economy spreads across Asia, especially China, at which point disruption to manufacturing will be inevitable.

“Temporary, one would hope, but hugely disruptive all the same” in the next few months, they wrote in a research note this week first noted by Bloomberg.

For those who have forgotten last year’s global shockwave when China locked down its ports for several days, a quick reminder: it led to an unprecedented hiccup in global logistics and shipping which hasn’t been resolved to this day. That’s because China is the world’s biggest trading nation and its ability to keep its factories humming through the pandemic has been crucial for global supply chains.

While the outbreak of omicron in China has been small compared to other nations (if one believes China’s official data, which is a big if) authorities are taking no chances, especially with China’s continued “zero-covid” policy. In recent weeks scattered infections of both the delta and omicron variants have already triggered shutdowns to clothing factories and gas deliveries around one of China’s biggest seaports in Ningbo, disruptions at computer chip manufacturers in the locked-down city of Xi’an, and a second city-wide lockdown in Henan province Tuesday.

Below is a brief timeline of the most recent events courtesy of Deutsche Bank:

  • China’s first Omicron outbreak was detected in the city of Tianjin over the weekend. On the morning of Jan 8, two patients in Tianjin who actively sought medical treatment were confirmed as being infected with the Omicron variant. The local government immediately locked down certain districts, restricted travel, and conducted large-scale screening. A total of 41 positive cases have been reported as of the morning of Jan 11.
  • The source of the local cases in Tianjin is still unknown, and community transmission is possible, according to local disease control officials. All previous local Omicron cases in Tianjin belonged to the same transmission chain. However, the above cases cannot be confirmed to be in the same transmission chain as the sequences of the imported cases of the Omicron variant that have been found in Tianjin. The early confirmed cases do not have any travel history outside Tianjin either. The specific source of the local cases found in Tianjin is still unknown at this time.
  • More alarmingly, the same Omicron virus strain has already spread to outside Tianjin. Two positive cases were found in Anyang, Henan on Jan 8, and were later confirmed to be the same Omicron variant found in Tianjin. Through contact tracing and gene sequencing, the source was identified as a college student who returned to Anyang from Tianjin on December 28, 2021, and who did not show any symptoms. 81 cases have since been confirmed in Anyang over the past few days. This suggests that (1) the Omicron virus may have been transmitted in Tianjin for almost 2 weeks; and (2) other travelers might have already carried the Omicron virus from Tianjin to elsewhere in China.

Looking at the recent data, China’s Covid outbreak this winter could be worse than in the previous winter – as shown in the chart below more provinces have detected Covid outbreaks this winter. Entering Q4, there are 12 provinces which have found more than 19 local cases in the past 14 days. More significantly, the total number of new cases in the past 14 days in Shann’xi has already exceeded 1500, which is a record high, except for in Hubei when Covid first occurred in early 2020, and this has happened despite China now having very high vaccination rates and strict regulations such as lockdowns. In addition, comparing the differences between months near Chinese New Year in 2021 and 2022, not only have the number of news cases been larger this year, the provinces hit by Covid outbreaks this year also tend to have higher GDP and population density.

As Bloomberg adds, Henan and Guangdong, which also has an outbreak, are centers of electronics production. If cases continue rising there, it could impact the supply of iPhones and other smartphones.

This also brings us to what Bloomberg calls the paradox of China’s aggressive “Covid-zero” strategy: while on one hand it helps contain the virus spread, to do so usually requires significant disruption or lockdowns as authorities limit the movement of people. The repeated mandatory testing of whole cities interrupts businessess and production, although nothing to the extent seen in places like the US, where the omicron wave caused an estimated 5 million people to stay home sick last week, leading to further economic slowdown (as discussed in “A March Rate Hike? Not So Fast“)

That risk of disruption for factories is already prompting companies to spread their risk by ensuring they have alternative production facilities, Stephanie Krishnan, a supply chain expert at IDC in Singapore, told Bloomberg.

“We are starting to see companies mitigating risk, seeing where they can increase capabilities for production of different products in different factories so they can shift that around,” she said.

Echoing what we said last night in “New Year Brings New All-Time High For Shipping’s Epic Traffic Jam“, Krishnan doesn’t see an end to the global supply crunch anytime soon and cautions it could take several years for the snarls to unwind. It’s a sobering outlook to start a year that many had hoped would mark the beginning of the end of the Big Crunch which dogged producers and consumers through much of last year.

Clearly what happens next is critical, and how China’s control of the virus plays out will ultimately be crucial, said Deborah Elms, executive director of the Singapore-based Asian Trade Centre. Those companies whose supply chains are fully located inside China may be insulated by the country’s mitigation strategy. But that won’t apply to everyone, she said.

“Lots of products in supply chains come from outside China,” Elms said. “Given challenges elsewhere, even zero Covid doesn’t solve all the issues of disruption.”

* * *

In its assessment of next steps, Deutsche Bank expects the government will try to contain the Omicron outbreak with more lockdowns and quarantines rather than taking a “live with Covid” approach. This will pose downside risks to near-term growth. The impact on consumption could be significant, although probably not as large as what happened in 2020.

While Omicron is far less deadly than other Covid variants, it is still deadly enough to cause healthcare service shortages in China, at least in some regions. Vaccination has proven to be ineffective in preventing Omicron from spreading, and while it offers protection against hospitalization, China still has some 20% of the population who are not vaccinated and will face serious health risks if Omicron becomes widespread. As such, DB says that a containment approach is still the government’s optimal choice for this winter regardless of how fast Omicron spreads in the next few weeks. It will be good news if travel restrictions, lockdowns and large-scale testing and contact tracing work in containing the outbreak. Even if outbreaks cannot be contained in some regions, these measures will still be considered necessary in flattening the curve and preventing hospitals from being overwhelmed nationwide.

What is much more important for the US, global capital markets and the Fed’s monetary policy – which has assumed much stronger growth in 2022 – is that China’s Omicron outbreaks are significant downside risks for near-term consumption demand. Restrictions will likely be imposed nationwide to reduce travel before the Chinese New Year and encourage people to stay where they are. Cities where new cases were found will reimpose lockdowns and social distancing measures. The impact in each city will depend on local authorities. Experience from the past 2 years was that while some cities (such as Shenzhen and Shanghai) can manage outbreaks in a less disruptive way, other cities (such as Xi’an) have resorted to stricter and larger scale lockdowns, causing severe disruptions to consumption and service sector activities. Businesses such as restaurants, as well as those linked to travel, and leisure & entertainment will suffer from sharp revenue reductions or even temporary shutdowns. This may also cause temporary job and income losses and negatively impact consumer goods purchases. Retail sales growth dropped by 3ppt in Jan-Feb 2021 (in 2-year average terms). Retail sales might weaken again in Jan-Feb 2022, though the YoY growth rate might not drop much owing to the low base in 2021.

Nevertheless, consumption will likely recover rapidly once lockdowns are lifted. Similar to what happened before, such negative shocks will likely be transitory and will be followed by strong recovery once lockdowns are lifted and businesses reopen.

Still, the notorious bull-whip effect will emerge once again, as supply chains once again become stretched, and like in 2021 the question will be how the trade off between rising costs – as goods in transit end up stuck on a ship far longer than expected – and slowing growth will impact the Fed’s view on what the optimal policy response is. While the Fed’s prerogative for now is clearly to contain inflation, the reality is that much of the inflation experienced today is on the supply side, something which Brainard told the Senate in her confirmation hearing the Fed is powerless to address. Meanwhile, if we see a “surprise” drop in growth in the coming months, the Fed will have no choice but to delay or at least stagger its tightening as the last thing the Fed can afford to do is hike into another recession, which will then quickly be followed with even more easing.
