Two “I Wills” In Isaiah 41 – Charles Haddon (C.H.) Spurgeon Sermon | Christian Sermons and Audio Books

Charles Haddon (C.H.) Spurgeon (June 19, 1834 January 31, 1892) was a British Reformed Baptist preacher who remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations, among whom he is still known as the “Prince of Preachers.” In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10,000,000 people, often up to 10 times a week at different places. His sermons have been translated into many languages. Spurgeon was the pastor of the New Park Street Chapel in London for 38 years. In 1857, he started a charity organization called Spurgeon’s which now works globally. He also founded Spurgeon’s College, which was named after him after his death.

Spurgeon was a prolific author of many types of works including sermons, an autobiography, a commentary, books on prayer, a devotional, a magazine, and more. Many sermons were transcribed as he spoke and were translated into many languages during his lifetime. Arguably, no other author, Christian or otherwise, has more material in print than C.H. Spurgeon.

Teach me to pray: The Window — HeadHeartHand Blog

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever felt that life is unfair? Ever looked around and wondered why the wicked seem to escape any consequences for their evil? Or why the godly seem to suffer for their faithfulness? Maybe you have felt the pain of that unfairness as you look at world history. Or maybe you’ve experienced injustice yourself in your family, school, business, in your employment, in politics, in relationships, or in sport. Cheats win, the honest lose. Bad people win, good people lose. Lies win, truth loses. It can be really depressing can’t it? How can we ease the pain of injustice?

I have experienced injustice and unfairness at different points in my life. As someone with a deep passion for justice, any experience of injustice is especially painful for me. I’ve experienced it in my family, in sport, and even in the church. Cheats win, the honest lose. Bad people win, good people lose. Lies win, truth loses. How can we ease the pain of injustice? Asaph takes us to the window of prayer to change our view and perspective.

BACKGROUND

We’ve been looking at prayer using different biblical images to teach us to pray:

  • The cross: Taught us how to pray in Jesus name
  • The throne: Taught us to pray with confidence
  • The battlefield: Taught us to pray as in a war.
  • The supper: Taught us to view prayer as communion
  • The door: Taught us to pray for all our needs

This week, we are looking at prayer as a window, a way of seeing things from God’s perspective.

What happens when we only see things from our perspective? Pain.

I. PAIN IS A PRISON

The pain of wicked people prospering

Asaph was plunged into the agonizing darkness of envy when he saw:

  • The arrogance and success of the wicked (3)
  • The health and strength of the wicked (4)
  • The peace and pleasure of the wicked (5)
  • The pride and violence of the wicked (6)
  • The scorn and satisfaction of the wicked (7)
  • The malice and oppression of the wicked (8)
  • The blasphemy and power of the wicked (9)
  • The praise and honor of the wicked (10)
  • The atheism and influence of the wicked (11)
  • The freedom and ease of the wicked (12)

The pain of godly people suffering

Part of Asaph’s pain was seeing the ungodly prospering. But an even greater pain was seeing the godly suffering. When he looked at the godly he saw:

  • Pure motives and a pure lifestyle (13)
  • Daily pain and daily punishment (14)

This painful contrast between the wicked’s prosperity and godly’s suffering was deeply troubling to him (16). Although he tried to persuade himself that God was good and a godly life was worth it (1), he could hardly stand with the shock of the contrast (2), with the envy he felt welling up inside him (3), with the shameful embarrassment of his thoughts (15), and with the wearying confusion that enveloped him (16).

Asaph had accurate eyes, but he could only see inside of prison. His eyes were accurate in what they were seeing. Nowhere does God come in and say, “Asaph, your sight is terrible, you need glasses.” He was not mistaken or making things up. But, as we will see, he was not using a widow that would have transformed what he was seeing. Using just his physical sense of sight he was left in the darkness of physical reality. The result was a painful dark prison of confusion and depression.

CHANGING OUR STORIES WITH GOD’S STORY

Right eyes, no window. If we look at ourselves or the world with only our physical eyes, we will see only what is physically true, and that’s often a deeply depressing sight. If you let the media or social media or just your own senses be your primary means of seeing this world, you will end up in a painful windowless dark prison of confusion and depression. Like Asaph you will end up shaken to the core, tempted to backslide, and want to be wicked rather than godly.

EYESIGHT IS HEARTPAIN

How can I find God’s window? How can I see things from God’s perspective?

II. PRAYER IS A WINDOW

Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end (17).

As long as Asaph viewed the world with just his own eyes, he was imprisoned in pain. But when he went into God’s sanctuary, into the place of prayer, a big bright window was opened to him, enabling him to see beyond physical sight. As he prayed, a new window on the world opened up and enabled him to see everything differently. He saw both a spiritual dimension to this life as well as an eternal dimension after this life, flooding his soul with light and liberty.

He saw an eternity of pain for the wicked

Instead of seeing the here and now of the wicked, he saw the there and then of the wicked. He saw their end, their spiritual and eternal end. He saw their previously confident steps slipping under them as they cannot find their footing (18). He saw their strength and success falling into ruins (18). He saw them destroyed in a split second and swept away into hell on a tsunami of terror (19). He saw God treat them like a bad dream (20). Asaph saw the end is all that matters. He sees the horrific end of the ungodly and is horrified by his previous thoughts and feelings (21-22). He saw that he was seeing as a mere animal.

He saw an eternity of pleasure for the godly

God was guiding Asaph, holding his right hand, counseling him to look through the right window, guiding him with his Word (24). He saw how he should see while he lived in this world, and just as he saw the wicked differently, he also saw the godly differently. Again, the window of prayer showed him the end is all that matters. “Afterward…” (24). After all dark prisons he spent time in while living here, he sees there is an afterward. “Afterward you will receive me to glory” (24). After all the pain…glory. Immediate and immeasurable and indescribable glory. This will be a glorious place, with a glorious Savior, with a glorious company, in a glorious condition, for a glorious eternity. We will have a glorious body and a glorious soul

The Christian life is really summed up in this one verse: “You guide me with your counsel (life here), and afterward you will receive me to glory (life hereafter)” (24). His new worldview gave him a new God view. He may have little in this world, but now, having God, he has enough (25-28).

CHANGING OUR STORIES WITH GOD’S STORY

Prayer changes our worldview. Spending time in God’s presence changes the way we look at everything. Prayer is not just about getting things from God, it’s about personal transformation. We often say, “Prayer Changes Things” but it mainly changes us. It changes what we see, how we see, when we see, and who we see. The biggest change that prayer effects is that we see the end is all that matters.

Prayer changes our mental health. When we see God’s justice putting right all the wrongs, when we see the godly’s fortunes reversed, when we see the glorious future that awaits us, that cannot but improve our mental health and even become a fund of mental and spiritual wealth. The Psalms are full of this kind of perspective changing.

PRAYER PRODUCES PERSPECTIVE

SUMMARY

Screen Shot 2022-11-09 at 9.05.06 AM

A NEW CHAPTER

See the cross. No one suffered more unfairly than Jesus, but through prayer he battled successfully to keep the end in view (John 17; Heb. 12:2). He suffered eternal pain to give his people eternal pleasure. Show the cross to others too, that they may have a good end.

See the end. The end is really all that matters. A good life is desirable, but a good eternity is essential. Pray your way to the end of the road and the end of all human history. The more you pray, the less the pain. All wrongs will be put right. The evil will lose everything and the good will win everything. Show the end to others too, that they may have a good end.

Prayer. Perfect Seer, give us perfect seeing through prayer so that we can reduce our present pain and increase our eternal pleasure, and help others to do the same.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. What injustice have you suffered in the past or still in the present?

2. How has that injustice affected you?

3. How has this Psalm changed your view of prayer?

4. How is prayer changing you, especially your worldview?

5. What is your most used window on the world? The media? Social Media? Prayer?

6. How will you help someone this week to refocus on the end?

Why Be Thankful? | D. James Kennedy Ministries

During this month of Thanksgiving, we are reminded that we have much to be thankful for, even in trying times. We live in a free nation where we have the opportunity to choose our own leaders, and where our God-given rights are acknowledged and protected by a Constitution. What you may not know is just how rare a thing that is in human history.

Many are trying to erase our history but if we lose touch with our history, we lose touch with the very foundation of our freedom. That’s why our Providence Forum outreach has produced the Foundation of American Liberty series of documentaries. On this program, we share a preview from the newest installment of this series, “A City on a Hill.”

Trust and Do; Do and Trust — VCY America

Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.Psalm 37:3

Trust and do are words which go well together, in the order in which the Holy Spirit has placed them. We should have faith, and that faith should work. Trust in God sets us upon holy doing: we trust God for good, and then we do good. We do not sit still because we trust, but we arouse ourselves and expect the Lord to work through us and by us. It is not ours to worry and do evil but to trust and do good. We neither trust without doing nor do without trusting.

Adversaries would root us out if they could; but by trusting and doing we dwell in the land. We will not go into Egypt, but we will remain in Immanuel’s land-the providence of God, the Canaan of covenant love. We are not so easily to be got rid of as the Lord’s enemies suppose. They cannot thrust us Out nor stamp us out: where God has given us a name and a place, there we abide.

But what about the supply of our necessities? The Lord has put a “verily” into this promise. As sure as God is true, His people shall be fed. It is theirs to trust and to do, and it is the Lord’s to do according to their trust. If not fed by ravens, or fed by an Obadiah, or fed by a widow, yet they shall be fed somehow. Away, ye fears!

Knowing And Doing :: By Nathele Graham

Life is a series of choices. The choices we make affect our entire life. For instance, if you choose to overindulge in rich foods, you can seriously damage your health. Weight gain, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and more are all a result of poor food choices. Too much alcohol brings serious consequences, as does sexual promiscuity. Bad choices have been around since the beginning of time, and all of creation suffers because of Adam and Eve knowing what was right but choosing to do what was wrong.

We must remember that God had very clearly told Adam what would happen if he ate from the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. God tells us, too, through Scripture. Sin separates us from God, who created us. God is love and wants to forgive our sin. Even though Adam willingly chose to disobey God, his sin was covered by God by shedding the blood of an animal to clothe Adam and Eve with the skin.

“Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them” (Genesis 3:21).

Life in the Garden, prior to Adam’s sin, was very different than life today, but God still loves us and has given us the only way to take away the sin that separates us from Him.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

Adam made a choice to sin, and we have that same choice. There’s only one sin that cannot be forgiven, and that is choosing to reject the sacrifice which Jesus made. He shed His blood as the final sacrifice to take sin away. You must make the choice to accept His sacrifice while you’re living this life.

Still, knowing what’s right and doing what’s right are two different things. Knowing is head knowledge, but doing comes from the heart. After Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden, life became difficult. Nobody has ever been more aware of the result of sin than they were.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 8:3).

They knew what was right but did what was wrong. People haven’t changed much over time. After Adam and Eve were evicted from the Garden, they had two sons, Cain and Abel. They were well aware of the importance of shedding animal blood to cover sin. God gave the example when He shed blood to cover Adam and Eve’s nakedness with animal skins.

“And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission” (Hebrews 9:22).

The importance of animal sacrifice was known to Cain and Abel, and they knew what was right. Cain was a farmer who grew crops, but Abel was a rancher who raised sheep.

“And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell” (Genesis 4:3-5).

Cain knew what was right but chose to do things his own way, which was wrong. Because God rejected Cain’s sacrifice, he was angry with his brother and killed him. He knew what was right, but he did wrong.

What exactly is sin? That’s a word we use a lot, but do we understand what it means? Many things get named as sin by people that God doesn’t name as sin in Scripture. There are also things God names as sin that people accept as a lifestyle. Sin is something we commit against God. The word in Greek is “hamartia” and means “to miss the mark” or to “miss or wander from the path of uprightness and honor, to do or go wrong,” or “to wander from the law of God, violate God’s law, sin.”

So, when God told Adam, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Genesis 2:17), it was a warning for Adam’s protection rather than God trying to ruin Adam’s fun. Adam knew what was right, but instead of doing what was right, he sinned. Throughout Scripture, we see God’s love as He guides mankind toward the path that leads to salvation, but we also see mankind choosing the wrong path.

“In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes” (Judges 17:6). That’s why we have troubles in life.

Most Christians know what is right. Scripture tells us God’s ways. Loving one another is a command from Jesus.

“These things I command you, that ye love one another” (John 15:17).

Knowing and doing are two different things. We know we are to reflect God’s love, but do we? We need to study Scripture and use Jesus as our example of love. The Gospel of John shows us many examples of how Jesus loved people. Jesus was fully God, but He was also fully human. His body got tired, but even when He needed rest, He had time for others. Humans had no way to bridge the gap to God; sin had made that impossible. Jesus was God’s answer to our need. God Himself stepped into this world and put His glory aside to provide our only way for salvation.

Jesus said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

Jesus showed us that love. Knowing we should unselfishly love others and actually loving them are two different things.

We know that we need to be humble. Pride gets in the way of us showing God’s love. Instead of building up our own egos, we need to humble ourselves before our Lord.

James tells us, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up” (James 4:10).

Humility is something we humans have a very hard time with. If we think someone else is getting more kudos, we get miffed.

“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).

We know that, but what do we do about it? Instead of living as an example of a humble child of God, too often we allow pride to stumble our walk. We see so many special interest groups who think that rioting or having parades to display their sin is the way to be respected. The truth is that living a humble life that honors God is how Scripture tells us to live. Marriages fail because both the husband and the wife demand to be in control. Pride gets in the way of contentment. A man is to love his wife in the same way Christ loves His church, and a wife is to submit to her own husband.

We aren’t alone in our plight. The Apostle Paul wrote about his own struggle with knowing and doing.

“For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do” (Romans 7:18-19).

He wanted to do right, but he felt as if he didn’t do what was right.

“Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me” (Romans 7:20).

Paul was a very smart man. He knew the problem was sin dwelling in him. We all have that same problem today. We allow sin to rule our actions rather than allowing Christ to be our example to follow.

“O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin” (Romans 7:24-25).

So often I feel wretched because I have failed to do what is right. In my mind – Greek word “nous,” meaning the intellect and thoughts – I know what God says to do, but in my flesh – Greek word “sarx,” meaning my human nature – I fail to do what’s right. Knowing and doing are two different things.

Even though we know what’s right but don’t do it, we have forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Jesus was God incarnate, and only faith in His death, burial, and resurrection can take sin away. Good works don’t earn salvation, but it’s our kindness that shows Christ to a lost world. There is nothing we can do that’s good enough to earn our right to salvation. Only faith in Jesus will bring eternal life.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

We cannot work for our salvation, but we should work because of our salvation, out of gratitude for what Christ has done for us.

“For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also” (James 2:26).

Let your faith show in the way you behave.

Knowing and doing. We all struggle with it. Pray and be sure to study Scripture in order to know God’s will. Follow the example of Jesus.

God bless you all,

Nathele Graham

What Can I Do? :: By Nathele Graham

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

Jesus gave us a gift that is uniquely from Him. He gave us life in this world, and by faith in Him, eternal life.

“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men” (John 1:3-4).

The gift is free but must be accepted. It cost Jesus more than our human minds can comprehend, but His love for His creation is so perfect and deep that He freely shed His blood for our salvation. Can you think of anybody you would voluntarily die for? Maybe your child or your spouse, but would you shed your blood to save the life of a total stranger? Probably not. Jesus did more than just shed His blood. He left the glory and splendor of Heaven, and He left the worship of the Heavenly Host.

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

He left the pure love of His Father to step into His creation. He knew He would be ridiculed, mocked, beaten, spit upon, and crucified. Still, He chose to put up with all of that in order to save you and me from eternal damnation. Mankind had been separated from God ever since Adam sinned. Jesus willingly paid the price for our salvation. Because of His love, because of His sacrifice, you and I have the promise of eternal life with Him in Heaven if we sincerely place our faith in Him. If you’ve earnestly accepted Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection as the atonement for the sin of your life, then you need to say thank You. You need to let Him change your life from a self-centered life filled with sin to a life of unselfishness, reflecting God’s love. You need to let Him know that you understand what He did for you by living for Him.

It seems that many people know exactly what to do in order to serve Christ. Many sports figures openly give God the glory for their talent and ability to excel in their chosen sport. Some actors use their talents to glorify God.

Starting with the Apostles, we can see how walking with Jesus changed the world. Peter often comes to mind when we think of someone who was changed from an outspoken man who was rash in his actions. It’s been said that Peter only opened his mouth to change feet. He was a fisherman and had no training in eloquent speech. He more than likely was prone to using “colorful” language when he was around his fishing buddies. Jesus saw past all of the rough edges of his character and saw a man who would be a leader in the Church. Not a Pope but a Christian leader who followed what he learned from walking with Christ. Peter was married but was able to do the tasks which Jesus put in front of him because he was married to a woman who was also a believer, as were the other apostles.

“Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?” (1 Corinthians 9:5).

Paul is another example of a man who gave his life to Christ and served our Lord well. After Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus, he spent many years waiting and wondering what he could do for Jesus. Then, one day, the time was right for his mission trips to spread the Gospel. During the time he waited, Paul learned more about Jesus. By the time he set out on his missionary trips, he knew exactly what Jesus wanted him to do.

Matthew was a tax collector, a sinful profession, but Jesus called him and changed him. Matthew was one of the original disciples.

John and James had an interesting nickname from Jesus. “And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder” (Mark 3:17).

We can only imagine why Jesus called them the sons of thunder. Maybe because they wanted to call fire from Heaven on people who stood in their way. Walking with Jesus changed them. In more modern times, we all know of people who seem to know what to do to serve the Lord and know how to say “thank You” to Him. What about me? What can I do? What about you?

When I think of Jesus and what He did for me, I try to think how to repay Him. What can I do? I’m just a human with a sin nature. I can’t do great and mighty works for Jesus in order to say thanks. Most Christians have, at one time or another, asked themselves that question. What can I do to thank Him for salvation? How do I know what my gift(s) is/are? Most of us don’t have any great revelation from God telling us what He wants us to do. We need to pray for God’s guidance. Then, start doing, just doing something. First, get closer to Christ. How does that happen? Talk to Him and listen for His side of the conversation. Figure out what you enjoy doing. As long as what you enjoy is acceptable in the eyes of God, use it to glorify Him.

When trying to hear God’s voice leading you in how to serve, be sure to make friends with solid Christians and fellowship with them.

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching” (Hebrew 10:25).

When we have Christian friends, it’s easier to see the things of the Lord rather than see the ways of the world. Secular friends see worldly gain and ways as the ultimate purpose in life. However, true Christians have their minds and hearts turned to serving Christ. We are to exhort each other, so if you see a strength in a friend, encourage them to use that strength to serve the Lord. Do you know someone who is able to discern God’s truth? Maybe they should share their knowledge with others. Maybe you are able to teach. By spending time with strong Christians, you will be encouraged to teach a class or two. You might have to step out of your comfort zone, but if it’s what God has planned for you, it will work out.

There are many things we can do for Jesus, but they don’t all seem as if they are important. Living as an example of Jesus’ love so the world can see is something every Christian can do.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).

That is something you can do for Jesus no matter what. Don’t be ashamed of Him, and live openly as a follower of Christ. When you put Jesus first in your life, you will thank Him by living for Him. Study Scripture to learn His ways. Jesus forgave people.

“Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:21-22).

Forgiving others is a way to imitate Jesus. Our sin against God was fatal. Our choice to sin sends us to Hell. No matter what others do to us, it doesn’t compare to our sin against God.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Our sins are forgiven through Christ. Since He forgives us, we need to forgive others. We can do that in order to show our thankfulness to Jesus.

Jesus commands us to love one another. You can do that.

“This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you” (John 15:12-14).

It isn’t always easy to love others, but love is what Jesus commands us to do. When you ask, “What can I do?” try showing love to others. Jesus spoke those words to His disciples not long before He was arrested. If you call Jesus your friend, then follow His commandment and love one another. Something else we all can do to show our gratitude is to live for Him by sacrificing our selfish desires and serving Him with joy.

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1).

Set selfish desires aside and die to self. Think of others, and show God’s love and forgiveness. Jesus loves you; do you love Him?

It isn’t always easy to live life as Jesus wants us to live, but we need to try. Sometimes a job can make living for Jesus hard. Earning your living is an important part of a Christian’s life, but the job may be filled with challenges to our faith. That’s one reason we need to choose Christian friends and support each other when the world seems to beat us up. The early Christians faced much persecution, but they drew closer to each other, and Christianity flourished.

“And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart” (Acts 2:46).

That’s something you can do for Christ… fellowship with brothers and sisters who love our Lord and encourage them in their walk.

When you ask, “What can I do?” look into Scripture and see what the great men and women who loved the Lord did. The Old Testament records many accounts of people who did what they could for God. The New Testament records the life of Jesus and His example to us. It also records what people just like you and I did to serve Him. None of the things we can do are works in order to obtain salvation, but works of love to show our gratitude. Time is drawing to an end, and only the things we do for Christ will last.

God bless you all,

Sharing the Gospel in a Hostile Society | Answers in Genesis: Daily Articles

How Christians can communicate truth in a polarized world

Two recent news stories highlight the fact that ideological disagreement can be dangerous—even deadly. A conservative teenager was run over and killed by a liberal man who thought he was doing the world a favor through his actions. And a pro-life canvasser was shot as she left the house of a liberal couple who disagreed with her activities.

Christians are commanded to take the message of the gospel everywhere and to everyone. This means at least some Christians will be called to share the gospel in contexts that can become very hostile or even dangerous. This is even more the case in a society where words one disagrees with are equated with physical violence (and thus a physically violent reaction can be justified in the mind of the offended person). In these situations, we have to take extra care to exercise discernment.

First, people should prayerfully consider with trusted counsel whether to engage in evangelism in hostile environments at all. Jesus said, “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you” (Matthew 7:6). This means that there are at least some situations where we can evaluate the risk and conclude the risk is unwise. There are so many avenues for evangelism—for every street preacher that shares the gospel in front of an abortion mill, there’s a need for someone to minister in a nursing home. Environments that can turn physically dangerous aren’t inherently more virtuous. And some environments can turn unexpectedly dangerous, so extra steps should always be taken to communicate the gospel clearly with grace and in a way suited to the environment (e.g., getting to know the people in the area or any challenges you may be facing) while taking steps to ensure safety for all involved.

Second, Paul says, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all” (Romans 12:18). His statement implies that sometimes it’s not possible and sometimes it doesn’t depend just on you. An evangelist can share the most grace-filled gospel message since the apostles walked the earth, and someone may still get unreasonably offended and react in an inappropriate way. That’s not the messenger’s responsibility. We should communicate our message so that if someone gets offended, it’s by the message itself, not anything obnoxious about our manner of presenting it.

Find Common Ground

No matter how different someone may seem from you, they are a fellow image-bearer, and you have something in common with them! If someone feels like you can identify with them and their struggles, they are more likely to listen to what you’re saying. That’s why, for instance, those who have repented of committing the sin of abortion can have powerful abortion-mill evangelism opportunities, while ex-cons can be particularly effective in prison ministry.

We can find common ground even with people who are entrenched in sins that they use to identify themselves, because we are sinners who have been forgiven, and we are extending the message of that same forgiveness to them.

In today’s identity-driven world, a personal story can be particularly powerful. So if you have a story of how God has delivered you, sharing that can be a good tool to get someone comfortable with the idea of needing deliverance so you can address their need for salvation.

Get People Ready for Discomfort

People are sometimes mocked as “snowflakes” if they are easily offended, but the reality is that schools, media, and the overall culture are creating people who are increasingly insulated from anything that could mentally challenge them or hurt their feelings. When children are continually told they are special, deserve anything they aspire to, and have the right to define their own truth, identity, and how others view them, it’s not surprising they don’t react well to being told that they are sinners in need of God’s grace (as we all are).

When engaging with people who are likely unfamiliar with being challenged in this way, it’s helpful to deal with any emotional impact of the conversation up front. Starting by affirming their value and setting expectations can be helpful. For example, “The Bible teaches that we are created in God’s image, so that means that you, as an image-bearer, have inherent value and worth. So even though we may disagree with each other on some foundational things, I really want to understand what you’re saying and for you to understand what I’m saying. Are you interested in that type of conversation?”

Some people who aren’t used to engaging with ideas they find distasteful may respond immaturely and emotionally. It is particularly important that we don’t respond in kind. Because we are representing Christ, we should hold ourselves to the highest standard. Sometimes we can help people process their discomfort and proceed in a productive way: “I understand that you disagree with what I’m saying. However, I’ve been respectful to you. Can you tell me why you disagree with what I’ve said?” If they aren’t able to do that, it may be time to at least temporarily disengage: “I think at this point the best thing to do is take a break. Can we talk about this again at a future time?”

The above may seem like we’re tiptoeing around people’s emotions, but that can be appropriate at times. Getting people ready to hear things that are challenging for them can be a good first step if they are overly emotional or it seems like they are not used to being intellectually challenged (a sad indictment of our educational institutions!).

Do Not Compromise Biblical Truth

As much as we can try to take into account people’s discomfort with biblical ideas that run counter to their thinking or lifestyles, we cannot compromise or change what God’s Word says. For instance, we can be sensitive while communicating the Bible’s teaching about marriage to an unmarried couple who are living together or to a homosexual couple that the state has declared to be married, but we cannot shrink away from the reality that both situations are unbiblical.

But in reality, the sin that they love is killing them.

It can seem unkind to tell someone something that we know is going to be uncomfortable to them. It seems like slapping someone in the face to tell them that something they love is unacceptable to God. But in reality, the sin that they love is killing them. Not only do many sinful behaviors have negative consequences in this life, but if the person does not repent and dies in their sin, they will spend an eternity separated from God in hell. The ultimate unkindness is to value our own comfort too much to share the truth with others. Ezekiel 33 even indicates that believers are held accountable if we fail to warn others about God’s judgment of sin. But we can’t stop there. The whole reason for showing people their sinful state is to point them to the Man who lived without sin that is able to forgive and save us from our own sin, offering us, instead, blessed eternal life with God.

We also have to be able to defend biblical truth. It is common for unbelievers to have a stock list of reasons why they don’t believe the Bible, and not coincidentally many of these objections are answered in articles on the Answers in Genesis website. If someone responds to your gospel message with, “Well, how did Noah fit the animals on the ark,” it’s best to give a sufficient answer to show the Bible is true, but then continue to share the gospel. It’s no good for a gospel presentation to be completely derailed into a discussion of how there could be day or night before the sun and whether the similarity of mammalian forearms means we evolved from a similar ancestor.

People Still Need the Gospel!

It can be tempting to say that it is not worth the challenge of sharing the gospel with people who will probably ridicule us and may even attack us. But the gospel answers some of the fundamental struggles in today’s society regarding identity, meaning, and truth. There is nothing more amazing than seeing people go from hostility to trusting Jesus as the Holy Spirit works in their hearts. And of course, we must obey the Great Commission: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19–20).

November 13 – Hidden reefs | Reformed Perspective

“These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves…” – Jude 12a

Scripture reading: 1 Corinthians 11:17-22Jude 1:12-13

A hidden reef is one of the greatest dangers for ships because if a ship runs aground, the waves will mercilessly slam into it until the ship breaks apart. But what does that have to do with our “love feasts”? Using the Greek word agape, “love feasts” was a nickname Christians used in the early church to describe the fellowship they had with each other during and surrounding the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.

Jude is warning about ungodly influences creeping into the church and destroying that fellowship, like hidden reefs can destroy a ship. Thinking that grace means we can live as we want, presuming that God doesn’t really care about our sinful choices, and boasting that we can control temptation on our own – those are all shipwrecks waiting to happen. That’s why “the Christian church is duty-bound to exclude such people by the official use of the keys of the kingdom until they reform their lives” (Lord’s Day 30).

Whether or not you are having the Lord’s Supper today, treasure the fellowship you have in Christ’s church. Pray for your elders to be faithful in protecting the church. Because if we are not vigilant, we will run aground and break apart.

Suggestions for prayer

Give thanks for the fellowship we have together in Christ and for faithful elders and pastors who stand as watchmen over the church. Pray for a selfless heart that will gladly receive the guidance of the under-shepherds Christ has appointed in your congregation.

You Never Let Go . . — Daily Devotionals by Thoughts about God

Then I realized that my heart was bitter, and I was all torn up inside.” Psalm 73:21 (NLT)

Has your heart ever been bitter?

It is so easy to allow bitterness to hold a death grip on our life; when our life doesn’t turn out like we think it should, when we see other people receiving accolades that we feel are due to us and not them, when we God seems distant in our greatest time of need, when friends let us down, when evil people are seemingly blessed and those whole heartedly following God are punished.

I confess I have struggled with bitterness at various times in my life.  I can recall one of those times very clearly . . .

We had a friendship but it wasn’t always easy.  She always seemed to hold something back.  We would be traveling along pretty smoothly in our relationship and then all of a sudden it was as if I ran smack into a wall – to high to climb to wide to go around.  It was disheartening and I found myself often questioning why we were friends.  Then time and differences took us a part . . .

A couple of years later God brought us back together and I wondered if the relationship would be the same.  For a while it seemed different, she was openly sharing some really difficult struggles.  These struggles were pretty huge and I began fasting and praying weekly for her.  Then slowly our relationship began to erode and we went our separate ways.

A few of years later the tables were turned and I now found myself in a series of difficult situations but she was nowhere to be seen.  I was hurt.  I had been there for her why wasn’t she there for me?  And if that weren’t enough I began to see God’s blessing poured out in her life and the hurt burrowed deep into my heart.

I drank the poison, allowing bitterness to do its insidious work in my life.  It colored everything; my circumstances, my relationship with God, my relationship with my family and other friends.  I could feel myself pulling inward in self-protection mode.  I knew it wasn’t healthy but had no power within me to stop.  I became judgmental and jaded.

But God never let go of me during this time.  He never gave up on me.

Look at what the writer of Psalm 73 says as he continues his conversation with God. . .

I was so foolish and ignorant – I must have seemed like a senseless animal to you.  Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand.  You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.  Whom have I in heaven but you?  I desire you more than anything on earth.  My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.  (Psalm 73:22-26 NLT)

Yet I still belong to You . . . even in the midst of my bitterness I still belonged to God.  He didn’t give up on me or let me go!  And He doesn’t give up on you or let you go either!  He is ours forever!

That difficult time allowed me to see God in a way I had never seen Him before and it showed me how easily I can lose my way and turn my heart away from the One who loves me the most.

That friendship has never been restored but God has taught me to pray for blessing in her life and through that He has set me free from the bitterness that so long ensnared me and kept me from truly growing in my walk with Him.  I whole heartedly echo the words of the Psalmist. . .

Whom have I in heaven but YOU?  I desire YOU more than anything on earth!  My spirit may grow weak but God remains the STRENGTH of my heart; He is mine FOREVER!  (Psalm 73:25-26 NLT)

Thank you Lord, for never letting go and never giving up on me!

Resist the Enemy — Daily Devotionals by Thoughts about God

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” 1 Peter 5:8-9

Thoughts on today’s verse

Satan is real. He and his power are intended to harm. But rather than spending our time worrying about him, let’s resist him when we are tempted and focus on Jesus. He’s the one who won the big showdown at Calvary, triumphing over Satan. He took Satan’s greatest tool and disarmed it. Now we can resist and Satan will flee.

Prayer:

Thank you, Almighty God, for sending Jesus to break Satan’s stranglehold over us. Through the Savior’s death you have assured me that mine won’t be the end of our relationship, but the beginning of life with you. Today, however, I ask that you help me especially resist Satan’s power over my life in the following ways… Through Jesus I pray. Amen.

As Canada expands its euthanasia program, what does biblical tradition say about it?
Whoever sheds the blood of man, By man shall his blood be shed; For in His image Did Hashem make man. Canada is expanding its government-funded euthanasia program to include the mentally ill. At the same time, parliamentarians in Scotland are being petitioned to incorporate a “suicide pod” that would allow people to autonomously end their lives. Eerie Similarities Between Democratic Party And Chinese Communist Party Lingo
Both the Chinese Communist Party and the U.S. Democratic Party are masters at obfuscating language to achieve their political objectives. There are even some interesting similarities in certain aspects of messaging by both parties. … the CCP included a new slogan that embellishes “whole people’s democracy”: acting for people, relying on people. This is simply more twisted gobbledygook, as the CCP has been “acting for the people” without regard to any democratically-obtained input from the Chinese people since the communist regime took power in 1949. The Democratic Party, too, has an odd definition of democracy. Throughout the 2022 election campaign, one of the key pillars of the Democrats’ election narrative has been the imperative to “save our democracy.” … “saving our democracy” is a thinly veiled slogan whose real meaning is to save the Democrats, not the democratic actions of Americans who are poised to sweep the Democratic Party out of political power,

WAYNE ROOT: You’ve Been Gaslighted – Democrats Just Stole Another Election. — The Gateway Pundit

By Wayne Allyn Root

When something is so obvious, if the outcome makes no sense, if the outcome is literally impossible, then it is what it is. Forget “proof.” You know it. You saw it. You felt it. You experienced it. It happened. It’s real.

The 2022 midterm was just stolen. Just like 2020.

If you disagree, you’re either delusional, or terribly naïve, or brain dead. Or you’re in on the fix.

It’s time to admit we’re all part of a massive experiment in fraud, theft, brainwashing, and gaslighting to a degree never seen in world history.

Think of all the times in just the past few years you’ve been gaslighted. They lied to you about open borders…they lied about Hillary’s 30,000 deleted emails…they lied about spying on Trump…they lied about Russian Collusion…they lied about a perfectly fine Ukrainian phone call…they lied about massive Biden corruption in Ukraine and China… they lied about the Hunter Biden laptop they lied about the origins of Covid…they lied about the need for lockdowns and masks…they lied about the need for Covid vaccines…they lied about the vaccines being “safe and effective”…they lied and covered up all the deaths and injuries from the vaccine…they lied about the success of miracle drugs Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin…they lied about the stolen 2020 election…

You’ve been the victims of nonstop severe gaslighting for a decade now. You’re all part of a human psychology experiment in the limits that government and media can go in propaganda and brainwashing…while you can see they’re lying right in front of your eyes.

And these are the exact same people now telling you Democrats just over-performed, and stopped a GOP red landslide, against all odds, without cheating and stealing the midterm election.

Historically, every president in history facing his first midterm experiences a tough day with automatically 20 to 30 House seats lost…and 4 or more Senate seats lost…but this terribly unpopular President Biden is brain dead with severe dementia, and can’t put 3 coherent sentences together…Yet Biden defied history?

While also facing the worst economy in modern history…and the worst inflation in America’s history…and out of control crime…and open borders…and failing schools…and polls showing 75% of Americans believe the country is going in the wrong direction…Yet Biden beat all of that?

If you believe Democrats made a miracle happen, without cheating, rigging and stealing…I have a bridge to sell you, over the Atlantic Ocean, in the Vegas desert.

First, every poll in the country showed a gigantic GOP landslide victory- ranging from red wave, to red tsunami. Polls even showed women moved 32 points from September to October in favor of the GOP.

But in the end they all moved back to Biden and Democrats? Does that make sense to you?

Second, every poll in the country showed the top two issues, by a mile, were inflation and the economy. And crime was in second place, along with open borders.

And they all voted for Biden and the Democrats? Does that make sense to you?

CNN’s own exit polls showed the GOP made massive gains among almost every voting group- men, women, white men, white women, blacks, Hispanics, young people. Everyone.

And they all voted for Biden and the Democrats? Does that make sense to you?

In this environment where Americans can’t afford gas…or groceries…or rent…with the economy failing…inflation raging…scared to death of losing their jobs…living in cities plagued by violent crime, mass shoplifting, homeless everywhere, streets lined with poop, pee, drug needles…and failing schools intent on teaching your children to become masked transgenders…

In this environment, they all voted for Biden and the Democrats? Does that make sense to you?

That they looked around at the disaster one man has created in only two years, and they defied a century of historic midterm defeats for the party in power…and voted for Democrats? Folks, you’ve been gaslighted.

But the real proof the midterm was rigged and stolen is…FLORIDA.

In Florida the GOP won a landslide. DeSantis and Rubio and everyone else in the Florida GOP won in a red tsunami. The same one the polls showed was happening in the entire country.

Guess what Florida has? Florida has strict Voter ID, strict laws against voter fraud, severe prison terms for anyone caught trying to commit voter fraud, no mail-in ballots sent to every voter, no ballot drop boxes, no ballot harvesting, no ballots accepted for days after Election Day, no counting for days until the desired result is achieved by the Democrat Party.

Isn’t it a funny and strange coincidence that in that state, with all of those strict rules against cheating, the GOP red tsunami happened as predicted? But everywhere else, where there are no strict laws against voter fraud, and they allow all that cheating, the red tsunami fizzled.

And that under-performance is being blamed on Trump? And on conservative MAGA candidates?

Yet in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis is the most Trump-like, MAGA, America First, anti-woke, anti-trannie, in-your-face, ultra conservative politician in all of America. And with that ultra MAGA message, plus strict voting fraud laws…the GOP swept to a landslide victory.

And in most other places, they didn’t. Coincidence?

Folks, we’ve been robbed. Again. This was a repeat of 2020. They’ve fixed, rigged and stolen the election. First, they robbed us of the Presidency. Now they’ve robbed us of a red Republican landslide. And now they’re trying to blame it on Trump.

This is gaslighting. And we’ve had our election stolen- again.

Woke Fail: Disney Begins Layoffs, Hiring Freeze, and Limiting Employee Travel as Stock Crashes

“Disney picked a political fight with Gov. DeSantis earlier this year over the state’s Parental Rights in Education Law, which prohibits the teaching of sexuality and gender ideology — including transgenderism — to children in kindergarten through third grade.”

(David Ng – Breitbart) It’s been a bad week for the Walt Disney Co.

First, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) won re-election in a landslide victory on Tuesday. Then Disney’s corporate earnings disappointed Wall Street, sending its stock crashing to new lows. Now the entertainment giant is reportedly planning layoffs, a targeted hiring freeze, and travel limitation on its employees.

In a letter to top company executives obtained by multiple news outlets, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said the austerity measures will be “difficult” but necessary.

“I am fully aware this will be a difficult process for many of you and your teams. We are going to have to make tough and uncomfortable decisions. But that is just what leadership requires, and I thank you in advance for stepping up during this important time,” he wrote. View article →

8 Big Biden-Related Investigations Likely From House’s New GOP Majority | The Stream

When Republicans secure a narrow House majority, which appears likely as vote counting continues, it will mean an aggressive oversight agenda in the new year, something the Biden administration largely has avoided from Congress in its first two years.

As of Friday morning, Republicans appeared to control 211 House seats after midterm elections Tuesday — only seven short of the 218 needed for a majority in the 435-member chamber. Democrats apparently had won 196 House seats, according to RealClearPolitics, with 28 races yet to be decided.

Meanwhile, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy of California announced his bid Wednesday for speaker of the House. Although a predicted “red wave” didn’t materialize as voting concluded Tuesday, Republicans will control House committees whether they have a one-seat or a 20-seat majority.

Although other topics could arise, congressional Republicans already have stated plans to look into controversies surrounding the business dealings of Hunter Biden and other members of the president’s family, the crisis on the southern border, the politicization of the Justice Department, and even talk of impeachments.

Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., likely will go from ranking member to incoming chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee.

Here are eight investigations to expect under GOP leadership of the House in the coming year.

1. Hunter Biden and Beyond

The FBI presented enough evidence to Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss to charge Hunter Biden with tax crimes and lying on a gun purchase form, The Washington Post reported in early October.

Republicans in Congress, noting the Chinese business interests of President Joe Biden’s son, say the problem is significantly larger.

In a written statement last week to The Daily Signal, Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., who will take over as chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, said:

Oversight Republicans are investigating the domestic and international business dealings of President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and other Biden associates and family members to determine whether these activities compromise U.S. national security and President Biden’s ability to lead with impartiality.

Hunter and other members of the Biden family have a pattern of peddling access to the highest levels of government to enrich themselves. The American people deserve to know whether the president’s connections to his family’s business deals occurred at the expense of American interests and whether they represent a national security threat.

Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, wrote a letter to top Justice Department officials arguing that the foreign business dealings could be much broader and could include other members of the Biden family, including the president.

“These documents also indicate that Joe Biden was aware of Hunter Biden’s business arrangements and may have been involved in some of them,” Grassley says in his Oct. 13 letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and Weiss, the U.S. attorney in Delaware.

“Based on recent protected disclosures to my office,” Grassley wrote, “the FBI has within its possession significant, impactful and voluminous evidence with respect to potential criminal conduct by Hunter Biden and [the president’s brother] James Biden.”

Grassley provided 30 pages of documents collected by the committee — some from whistleblowers within the FBI who allege that the bureau has been holding back.

The documents include details of a contract designed to funnel $5 million from a Chinese government-connected firm, CEFC, to Hunter Biden and James Biden to compensate them for work done while Joe Biden was vice president in the Obama administration.

2. Border Crisis

Republicans say they also plan to hold the Biden administration accountable for the crisis of rampant illegal immigration across the southern border.

“We will also continue our oversight of President Biden’s border crisis that has led to historic illegal immigration, a surge of deadly drugs pouring across the border, and mismanagement of taxpayer dollars,” Comer said in his written statement. “We will hold the Biden administration accountable for this self-inflicted crisis.”

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Mexican cartels’ income from smuggling illegal immigrants across the border into the United States soared from $500 million in 2018 to $13 billion in 2022–a 2,500% jump.

Border Patrol agents apprehended 951,568 illegal immigrants during President Donald Trump’s final 19 months in office, but  caught 3.5 million in Biden’s first 19 months as president — a 377% increase.

As of early October, the Border Patrol had encountered at least 266,000 unaccompanied migrant children at the southern border since Biden took office, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

In September, 14 House Republicans wrote Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to say that “between October 2021 and July 2022, more than 130,000 Venezuelan nationals were encountered after entering the United States illegally.”

The GOP lawmakers argued that the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro “is deliberately releasing violent prisoners early, including inmates convicted of ‘murder, rape, and extortion,’ and pushing them to join caravans heading to the United States.”

In August, 12 GOP senators wrote to Ronald Davis, director of the U.S. Marshals Service to say: “So far in FY22, [Customs and Border Protection] has apprehended over 9,000 criminal aliens, including 53 for homicide or manslaughter, 283 for sex crimes, and almost 900 for assault, battery, and domestic violence.”

For the federal government, fiscal year 2022 ended Sept. 30.

3. Probing Big Tech

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., likely the incoming chairwoman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has said that House Republicans’ “Big Tech Accountability Platform” would focus on China.

Specifically, GOP lawmakers would focus on how tech companies such as Facebook, Apple, Amazon, and Google allow data to go to China.

“Companies with deep ties to China raise significant concerns about China’s access to American information,” the memo from McMorris Rodgers to fellow GOP members says, adding:

To address this concern, we will consider new transparency obligations, such as

Requiring companies to notify American users if those companies send, maintain, or store their personal information in China.

Requiring companies to notify American users if those companies are owned by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), a Chinese state-owned entity, or a non-state-owned entity located in China.

In August, Republicans on the House Oversight Committee sought information from White House national climate adviser Gina McCarthy about possible collusion with Big Tech firms to censor criticism of the Biden administration’s environmental policies.

GOP members also raised concerns about former Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s involvement with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

4. COVID-19 Origins

Comer, the likely incoming chairman, told The Daily Signal last week that the House Oversight and Reform Committee also would investigate the origins of COVID-19.

The probe would focus on three key facts, the Kentucky Republican said.

First, the panel would examine growing evidence that the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 likely originated in a research lab in Wuhan, China, and that the Communist Party of China covered it up.

Secondly, Comer said, oversight Republicans would focus on whether U.S. taxpayer dollars were funneled to the Wuhan Institute of Virology to conduct risky experimental research on bat coronaviruses. This also is known as “gain-of-function research.”

Third, Comer said the committee would explore whether Dr. Anthony Fauci, the retiring director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was aware of this information at the start of the pandemic. And, he said, the panel would investigate whether Fauci or other federal officials acted to conceal facts and intentionally downplay the “lab leak” theory.

“We will continue this oversight to hold U.S. government officials accountable for any wrongdoing and ensure Americans’ tax dollars aren’t being used on risky research at unsecure labs,” Comer said.

Please Support The Stream: Equipping Christians to Think Clearly About the Political, Economic, and Moral Issues of Our Day.

In August, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., sent a letter to the National Institutes of Health, telling the agency to maintain its records on COVID-19 and specifying the NIH subagency headed by Fauci.

“Specifically, I request you preserve all records, email, electronic documents, and data created by or shared with Dr. Fauci during his tenure at NIH that relate to COVID-19 including, but not limited to, NIAID-funded coronavirus research,” the Paul letter says. It continues:

This preservation request also includes all records of official business conducted on non-official accounts. For purposes of this request, ‘preserve’ shall be construed to mean taking reasonable steps to prevent the partial or full destruction, alteration, testing, deletion, shredding, incineration, wiping, relocation, migration, theft, mutation, or negligent or reckless handling that could render the information incomplete or inaccessible.

5. Botched Afghanistan Withdrawal

Republicans say they also intend to investigate the Biden administration’s hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021.

In late October, Republicans on the House Oversight Committee raised concerns about the Biden administration’s being uncooperative with an official known as the special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction. Congress created the post, as well as the office of the same name.

Comer and Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Wis., ranking member of the committee’s subcommittee on national security, wrote to Special Inspector General John Sopko to inquire about his access.

“On two separate occasions, you have informed the committee that the Biden administration is obstructing your work by failing to produce required information. This is unacceptable,” says the letter to Sopko, who was appointed in 2012 by President Barack Obama.

“Therefore, we request a briefing on your continuing oversight efforts and any obstacles put in place by the Biden administration. Historically, [the] State [Department] and USAID [the U.S. Agency for International Development] have honored SIGAR’s mission,” the letter continues, referring to Sopko’s office. It adds:

But since the Biden administration’s botched Afghanistan withdrawal — which is in desperate need of oversight — State and USAID have denied travel, delayed, obstructed, and even questioned SIGAR’s jurisdictional authority. The Biden administration’s obstruction directly violates the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2008 and the Inspector General Act of 1978, as amended, which both require agencies to provide inspectors general [with] information or assistance.

The chaotic U.S. exit from Afghanistan left 13 American servicemembers dead and left behind at least $7 billion worth of  U.S. military equipment for the Taliban, the Islamic fundamentalist group that regained control of Afghanistan.

House Republicans included addressing the “catastrophic Afghanistan withdrawal” in their “Commitment to America” plan.

6. IRS Management

Grassley led a letter from Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee requesting that the Government Accountability Office investigate financial management at the Internal Revenue Service after Democrats’ so-called Inflation Reduction Act bestowed $80 billion on the tax collection agency.

“If the near-$80 billion is spent out evenly over time, for FY 2023 the IRS will be receiving a supersized 57% boost relative to FY 2022,” the committee senators wrote. “Such an outsized boost to agency funding, derived from legislation developed and passed in partisan fashion, in our view represents a high risk for waste, fraud, abuse, and improper politicized utilization of taxpayer resources.”

The Republican senators seek information on what high-risk IRS issues identified previously by the Government Accountability Office remain outstanding, and what “significant deficiencies in internal controls” continue after IRS financial statements for fiscal year 2021 and fiscal year 2020. They also ask for details of “unresolved information system security control deficiencies” identified in the GAO audit.

7. Possible Impeachments

Some House Republicans have called for the impeachment of Biden. That seems far-fetched now, especially since McCarthy, the likely incoming speaker of the House, hadn’t shown any interest while he was House minority leader.

As speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., repeatedly pushed away calls for impeaching then-President Donald Trump  from multiple members of the Democratic caucus. But after gaining a House majority in 2019, Pelosi gave into pressure from the more adamant lawmakers in her caucus.

In the House minority, Republicans have introduced 14 impeachment resolutions against either Biden or his Cabinet officials.

If an impeachment happens, some observers say, it’s more likely to happen with Cabinet members — chiefly Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas or Attorney General Merrick Garland.

“I think it’s pretty much guaranteed that Mayorkas is going to be impeached by the House next year. Now, whether he’d be removed by the Senate, because it’s the same process as any other impeachment, that’s unclear,” Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, told The Daily Signal earlier this year.

“He took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the laws of the United States, and that ain’t what he’s doing,” Krikorian said of Mayorkas, who Biden appointed. He added:

There’s all kinds of hotheads among Republicans who will say, ‘Well, we got to impeach Biden’ and all this. Impeachment is a political process. It’d be a political error, I think, to go after Biden and even impeach him. Then Kamala Harris is president? I mean, that’s even worse.

But Mayorkas is an appropriate target for impeachment because even though the administration has a policy and he’s following it, it’s precisely because the president is so weak and unable to exercise authority — and there are differing currents of opinion in the administration. Mayorkas could be a lot tougher than he is. He could be actually following the law in a way that he’s not doing.

8. Investigating a Politicized Justice Department

After the FBI raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Aug. 8, McCarthy issued a warning to Garland, Biden’s attorney general.

“When Republicans take back the House, we will conduct immediate oversight of this department, follow the facts, and leave no stone unturned,” the House Republican leader said. “Attorney General Garland, preserve your documents and clear your calendar.”

After revelations that the Justice Department was targeting parents for objecting to local school board policies, some Republican lawmakers said Garland should be forced out.

“We have problems at the border, we have problems with drug cartels, we have problems with human traffickers,” Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., told The Daily Signal last year.

“And Merrick Garland wants the FBI and the U.S. attorney’s offices to focus on parents that go to a school board meeting to ask questions about mandates on their children, curriculums affecting their children, and the safety of their children during the academic day,” Blackburn said. “I think that Merrick Garland should be removed from his position.”

Blackburn said Garland should resign, Biden should fire him, or the House should impeach him and the Senate convict and remove him.

Stocks will plunge, inflation will persist, and the US economy will feel more pain, Carl Icahn says. Here are his 14 best quotes from a new interview. | Business Insider

Carl Icahn.REUTERS/Chip East

  • Carl Icahn expects stocks to tumble, inflation to linger, and the US economy to suffer more pain.
  • He built a Twitter stake before Elon Musk’s bid, and might have put $1 billion behind it if asked.
  • Icahn teased past bets against crypto, and said he wasn’t surprised by FTX’s collapse.

Carl Icahn warned the stock market’s epic rally won’t last, called on the Federal Reserve to keep hiking interest rates until it breaks the back of inflation, and issued a grim outlook for the US economy in a recent CNBC interview.

The billionaire investor and Icahn Enterprises chairman also revealed he’s betting against the S&P 500, may have shorted cryptocurrencies in the past, and might have put $1 billion behind Elon Musk’s Twitter bid if the Tesla CEO had asked him.

Here are Icahn’s 14 best quotes, lightly edited for length and clarity:

1. “I am still quite bearish on what is going to happen. A rally like this is of course very dramatic to say the least, but you have them all the time in a bear market, and I still think we’re in a bear market.”

2. “Whenever you have higher interest rates that have moved as they have here, you have an inverted yield curve, Treasuries at close to a 5% yield — you are going to have a recession. And I think we do have a recession already.”

3. “There’s a way to go down because inflation is not going away for the near term, and you’re going to have more of a recession, more of an earnings decrease.” (Icahn was discussing the outlook for stocks.)

4. “I don’t think the inflation is over. If I look through the ’70s, it took years and years and years — you can’t wave a magic wand and get the inflation over with.”

5. “The Fed has to keep raising. If it doesn’t, then it’s going to be worse for the future. They have to cure this inflation. It’s not something where you just take a magic pill and get rid of it.”

6. “There’s a lot of things that have to happen to turn this economy around, to get us out of a recession.” (Icahn flagged several headwinds including continued wage inflation, and the blow to household wealth from stocks and home prices dropping.)

7. “I’m short the S&P 500. The S&P has got a lot of tech stocks that are too high for the most part. I think that with high interest rates, they’re not worth what they’re selling for.”

8. “A lot of people called me about it and wanted me to do something about it as an activist. I was gearing up and looking at it. The stock went down a little bit, so I was starting to buy stock. I thought I would try to get on the board of it.” (Icahn was referring to Twitter.)

9. “I was really happy that Musk came along. He stood for the same damn thing, and he’s a lot richer than I am. I felt that he was the perfect guy for doing it. And he didn’t need the money.” (Icahn shared Musk’s concerns that Twitter was restricting users’ freedom of speech on its platform.)

10. “Nobody ever called me to go in. I might have done it if he called me. I might have put $1 billion in it, at the right price.” (Icahn was asked whether he was invited to join Musk’s $44 billion bid for Twitter.)

11. “I think it could spill over.  This is only one of the dangers you have in our economy.” (Icahn was discussing the implosion of Sam Bankman-Fried’s digital-asset exchange, FTX, and the crypto selloff it sparked.)

12. “I’m a smart guy. I tried to figure out the crypto and why it was valuable, but I could not understand what it really had to offer. So I never bought any crypto. In fact, I might have shorted it once or twice.”

13. “If you look at crypto, you look at ethereum, you look at these companies. What do you do if you don’t like the way it’s being managed? It’s a lawless area. There was no accountability that I could see, and I still don’t see it.”

14. “I’m not surprised that this happened because there really are no rules, no laws. It’s like the Wild West.” (Icahn was referring to FTX.)
