Needs to Open Our Mouths | VCY

Open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. (Psalm 81:10)

What an encouragement to pray! Our human notions would lead us to ask small things because our deservings are so small; but the Lord would have us request great blessings. Prayer should be as simple a matter as the opening of the mouth; it should be a natural, unconstrained utterance. When a man is earnest he opens his mouth wide, and our text urges us to be fervent in our supplications.

Yet it also means that we may make bold with God and ask many and large blessings at His hands, Read the whole verse, and see the argument: “I am Jehovah, thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.” Because the Lord has given us so much He invites us to ask for more, yea, to expect more.

See how the little birds in their nests seem to be all mouth when the mother comes to feed them. Let it be the same with us. Let us take in grace at every door. Let us drink it in as a sponge sucks up the water in which it lies. God is ready to fill us if we are only ready to be filled. Let our needs make us open our mouths; let our faintness cause us to open our mouths and pant; yea, let our alarm make us open our mouths with a child’s cry. The opened mouth shall be filled by the Lord Himself. So be it unto us, O Lord, this day.

“Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom.”  Song of Solomon 2:15

A little thorn may cause much suffering. A little cloud may hide the sun. Little foxes spoil the vines; and little sins do mischief to the tender heart. These little sins burrow in the soul, and make it so full of that which is hateful to Christ, that He will hold no comfortable fellowship and communion with us. A great sin cannot destroy a Christian, but a little sin can make him or her miserable. Jesus will not walk with His people unless they turn away from every known sin. He says, “If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.” (John 15:10)

Some Christians very seldom enjoy their Savior’s presence. How can this be? Surely it must be deeply hurtful for a tender child to be separated from their father. Aren’t you a child of God, and yet satisfied to go on without seeing your Father’s face? Aren’t you the spouse of Christ, and yet you’re content without His company? If so, you’ve fallen into a sad state, for when He has left her the pure spouse of Christ mourns like a dove without her mate.

Ask the question, what has driven Christ from you? He hides His face behind the wall of your sins. That wall may be built up of little pebbles as easily as it may be built up of great stones. The sea is made of drops; the rocks are made of grains: and the sea which divides you from Christ may be filled with the drops of your little sins; and the rock which has nearly wrecked your boat, may have been made by the daily working of the coral insects of your little sins. If you want to live with Christ, and walk with Christ, and see Christ, and have fellowship with Christ, take heed of “the little foxes that ruin the vineyards.” Jesus invites you to go with Him and take them. Jesus will surely be with you and help you eliminate foxes by His mighty power. Go with Him to the hunting!

She understood God loved her. She believed He had her best interest at heart. Connie never doubted His goodness. But she never knew there was an enemy of her soul. She never understood she could be armed and ready in her faith to resist him and stand firm. She didn’t understand how to be proactive in her faith, rather than just reactive in her circumstances.

Could this wall she was feeling in her marriage be more than just the seven year itch that people told her was normal? She didn’t like the irritating edges that ran between her and her husband like sandpaper these days. The arguments were so silly yet they seemed to blow out of proportion so fast. It simply wasn’t like them. She asked God for patience every day. Yet the wall seemed to grow.

Then she read it in God’s Word, the Bible. It jumped off the page.

Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:10 & 11

There was a battle going on alright and it was clear that it was not simply between her and her husband. Spiritual forces were at work. God sounded the alarm. He gave His assurance that His mighty power was enough to handle the struggle. He would equip His people.

Connie saw the unusual edginess in her marriage in a new light. When the irritation began to rise within her she breathed a prayer asking God for His mighty power to overcome the powers at work to divide her household. She saw her husband in a different light now, not as her opponent. She silently asked God to pour love for him into her heart. Connie took a stand against the devil’s schemes.

Look around your life. Is there a situation where you find yourself repeatedly struggling with another person? Do you find yourself constantly in a wrestling match which leaves you defeated and deflated? Is the reaction between you out of proportion to the grievance? Know that your enemy is not the other person. Know that the Lord’s mighty power can equip you to rise above the conflict.

Not every argument is a scheme to divide your household… but be aware when you are struggling with another person and ask God to make you strong in His mighty power.

Snares of the Modern Church: Part I

This is the first in a series of articles I intend to publish involving the snares, or the enticing traps, that modern Christians face. In this first article, I will be covering three of them. But the driving focus of all of them will be that we must rely solely on the Word of God as our authority and make sure our desires and our daily lives are aligned with it.

Scripture is more than an ancient anthology—it is a lighthouse shining its timeless wisdom across the churning seas of human history. In its words, we discern echoes of yesterday’s trials and today’s challenges. The Scriptures offer unparalleled insights into enduring snares, many of which resonate with facets of the modern church experience. By exploring these passages, we’ll unveil and juxtapose these biblical warnings with modern-day manifestations, particularly the allure of entertainment, fixation on signs and wonders, and the love of money.

Snares of the Modern Church – Part II: Cultural Accommodation and Moral Relativism

In Part I of our Snares of the Modern Church series, we dissected the issues of the modern church aligning with the prosperity gospel and an overemphasis on speculative interpretations about the unknown, drawing upon the wisdom of Colossians 2:82 Corinthians 11:3, and 1 Timothy 6:9-10. We discovered how these challenges, much like the snares of Paul’s time, risk diverting the focus from the core tenets of the Christian faith.

Now, transitioning into Part II, we extend our exploration to two additional snares facing today’s church—cultural accommodation and moral relativism. Anchoring ourselves in the timeless truths of Romans 12:2 and 1 Peter 1:14-16, we’ll discern how these challenges might be subtly affecting the professing Church and unveil the enduring wisdom of Scripture in navigating these issues.

Snares of the Modern Church, Part III: Consumer Christianity

As we continue our exploration of the snares of the modern church, a challenging, yet important, topic comes to the fore: Consumer Christianity. This term, while perhaps unfamiliar to some, paints a vivid picture of a troubling trend. It points to the conversion of the church and worship into a commodity, the reduction of faith into a product to be marketed, purchased, and consumed, rather than interacted with and being edified. This transactional perspective is a far cry from the vibrant, selfless, and sacrificial faith that Scripture commends.

Snares of the Modern Church – Part IV: Clericalism

Continuing our series on the snares confronting the modern church, we now delve into the subtle yet pernicious snare of clericalism. This term, perhaps unfamiliar to some, captures a dynamic that, unfortunately, is far too familiar within the walls of many congregations. Clericalism refers to an undue emphasis on the authority and influence of clergy, often at the expense of the laity’s role and contribution. When left unchecked, it can lead to a form of spiritual dictatorship, stifling the vibrancy and diversity of the body of Christ.

At its core, clericalism deviates from the biblical model of church leadership. The New Testament depicts the church as a body with many parts, each equally valuable, and each playing a crucial role (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). It also outlines a plurality of elders leading the church (Acts 14:23Titus 1:5). But clericalism disrupts this balance. It consolidates power in the hands of a select few, often reducing the rest of the congregation to passive participants in the pastor’s vision.

Snares of the Modern Church – Part V: The Gospel Coalition and Worldly Wisdom

A dark and disquieting influence has infiltrated the modern church, casting long shadows across the pulpit and pews alike. Though this enemy began in a far subtler way—cloaked in the guise of social enlightenment, a pied piper playing the seductive melody of “woke” culture—it’s become a brazen foe, clad in pitch and spewing forth blasphemy. It calls itself “progress,” a higher consciousness, a deeper understanding of justice, but it is, in truth, a sophisticated seduction by worldly wisdom. It’s a cultural chimera, bearing the promise of societal redemption but ultimately leading to division, dissension, and a devastating drift from Scripture’s divine clarity. The church, to our dismay, is ensnared in this snare, her lampstand dimmed by this beguiling fog of false wisdom.

Snares of the Modern Church – Part VI: False Love

The pages of Scripture are permeated with a resplendent theme: the inestimable and unspeakable love of God. This love cascades through time and eternity, an everlasting torrent of grace and mercy. We are taught even as little children the profound simplicity of love, expressed in Christ’s commandment to love one another (John 13:34), drawing from the well of God’s love for His creation.

According to Christ Himself in Matthew 22:37-39, the greatest of all commandments given is a call to love: to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. This love is a hallmark of Christ and authenticates us as His disciples.

Snares of the Modern Church – Part VII: Cultural Relevance

Every Sunday, across the globe, congregations gather in church buildings, expecting not only to hear the Word of God but often to be entertained. We see the theatrical spectacle of contemporary churches engaging in “culturally relevant” productions, sermon series based on popular movies, and over-the-top gimmicks increasingly becoming the norm.

That’s the problem.

We hear about these pastors and production teams, what these artists are doing, how many attendees they’re attracting, and what kind of trendy show they’re putting on this week. But rarely, is the driving force behind these modern church movements the pure, undiluted Word of God. It is a snare to be reckoned with, for sure.

Snares of the Modern Church – Part VIII: Cultural Appeasement

In Part VII of our series on the Snares of the Modern Church, we delved into the pitfalls of “Cultural Relevance,” where the church, in its quest to be relatable, risks compromising core beliefs. Now, in Part VIII, we navigate the treacherous waters of “Cultural Appeasement.” While both snares have their roots in a desire to engage with contemporary secular society, the latter ventures further, pushing the church not just to adapt, but to placate and satisfy worldly demands, often at the expense of biblical integrity. The line between relevance and appeasement might be thin, but the implications of crossing it are profound and far-reaching.

Throughout Christian history, the church has served not merely as a gathering of believers but as the defender and proclaimer of God’s truth on earth and the voice that speaks to the conscience of society in a lost and fallen world. Yet, in our current age, a troubling trend has emerged—many within the church have succumbed to the temptation to appease the world, forsaking biblical convictions for transient societal acclaim and instead, allowing the culture to become the voice of conscience to the church.

Snares of the Modern Church – Part IX: Superficial Unity

In the fascinating journey through the snares that entangle the modern church, the lure of “Cultural Appeasement” in Part VIII highlighted the ways in which church leaders and congregations can be ensnared by the desire to satisfy worldly desires. Now, we turn our attention to another deceptive snare: “Superficial Unity.” Unlike genuine spiritual unity, which unites believers around the unchanging truth of God’s Word, superficial unity seeks to present an image of harmony at the cost of diluting or even forsaking sound doctrine.

At first glance, unity seems a noble goal, and indeed it is one that Christ Himself prayed for (John 17:21). The apostles repeatedly stressed the importance of being of one mind and one accord (Philippians 2:2). However, it is vital to recognize that the unity Christ and His apostles spoke of was never meant to be achieved by compromising the truth or avoiding controversial topics.

Snares of the Modern Church – Part X: Self-Importance (God Needs Us)

In our continuing examination of the snares afflicting the modern church, we have delved into various traps such as superficial unity, cultural appeasement, and the distortion of biblical convictions. As we arrive at Part X of this critical series, we uncover yet another snare that subtly undermines sound doctrine: the snare of self-importance. It manifests in the belief that God created us out of a longing or necessity to fulfill some relational need within Himself, a view that erroneously suggests a co-dependency between the Creator and His creation.

This co-dependency perspective represents a serious departure from the impregnable truth revealed in Scripture and the notion of such self-importance isn’t far detached from the insidious false property gospel itself. This view not only diminishes God’s self-sufficiency but cunningly elevates humanity to an unwarranted level of significance. Such a belief, woven into the fabric of church teaching, can cause us to lose sight of God’s grand purpose in creation, leading them instead to focus on their presumed importance in fulfilling God’s supposed needs.

FEATURED ANALYSIS

Is Biden Incapable of Not Lying?

The president toured Maui’s wildfire devastation, telling residents a false tale of his own home fire.

Nate Jackson

At some point in our nation’s history, the president became our national grief counselor. When a natural disaster gains widespread attention, it is simply expected that the president go and meet victims, survey the damage, and so on.

One of those places is Maui, Hawaii, where at least 114 people were killed and another 850 remain missing after the deadliest wildfire in a century consumed Lahaina.

A presidential visit is rarely actually helpful to anyone, though. It’s just a political photo op that diverts resources to his security instead of helping the suffering. And it often devolves into bickering over what the president said or the facial expression he made or whatever other inane tripe is typical of the never-ending red vs. blue feud.

Ask George W. Bush. He knew that surveying the ground in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina wouldn’t actually help anyone, so he flew over. He was summarily subjected to Leftmedia condemnation for supposed callousness, culminating with that infamously race-baiting line from Kanye West, who declared during a television fundraiser that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

We know that disgraceful episode is more complicated than our distillation here, but it cemented the absolute necessity of a president putting his own boots on the ground after a disaster.

At the risk of getting muddy wrestling with the pig, we simply can’t let it pass that Joe Biden showed up in Hawaii and lied about his autobiography again. There are presidents who’ve made mistakes after disasters (Bush), and then there’s Biden.

“I don’t want to compare difficulties,” he told a small crowd in Maui, “but we have a little sense, Jill and I, what it’s like to lose a home.” He then recounted the “sunny Sunday” 15 years ago when lightning struck near his home, igniting a fire. “To make a long story short,” he said, “I almost lost my wife, my ‘67 Corvette, and my cat.” He has told that lie multiple times, previously claiming he “had a house burn down with my wife in it.”

The truth? The supposed raging inferno in his Delaware home was what the local fire department called “an insignificant fire” that was confined to the kitchen and quickly extinguished. Biden told the Maui audience that first responders “ran into flames to save my wife and save my family — not a joke.”

No, it’s not a joke, Mr. Biden. It’s sickening that you continue to tell lies in a transparently phony effort to connect with people. Instead, it ends up alienating them.

“There are no words in response to something like that,” marveled a teacher, who added, “I’m not voting for him again — that’s for sure.”

Not everyone was so composed. “This is the most despicable thing this president has ever said,” fumed one restaurant owner. “How do you compare almost losing your f***\ing Corvette to the children burned in their f***\ing homes, man?”

Biden would have been better off sticking with “no comment” than to lie like this, or to bizarrely joke about the “hot ground” while touring wildfire damage. It’s no wonder, after his visit, he responded to reporters asking if he could talk about his trip, “No, not now.” Sheesh.

Those are the mistakes of a cognitively disabled man. The lies? That’s a deeper matter.

His autobiographical lies are the stuff of legend. He recently insulted Gold Star families — families who have that star because his disgraceful surrender of Afghanistan led to the deaths of 13 American military personnel — when he told them his son Beau also came home “in a flag-draped coffin.” We’d certainly extend compassion to a man who lost his son to brain cancer, but don’t lie about it.

Biden also told Maui residents how his first wife and daughter and nearly two sons were killed in a tragic car accident just after he first won his Senate seat in 1972. He was sworn in from his sons’ hospital room. At least he didn’t repeat the awful lie he’s told about that before, that the truck driver “drank his lunch” when, in fact, the accident was his wife’s fault.

We’ve previously expressed compassion for him for those deaths, too. But you might wonder what normal, decent person would take his Senate seat in the wake of that kind of tragedy when his young boys needed him most. You might think it’d be a man who simply needed to keep working in order not to break down.

Perhaps it’s that, at least in part. For our part, the real concern is that Biden so desperately craves attention and power that he has made a long career out of pathological lies about himself — extending even to his hardships and tragedies. That’s a deeply distressing truth about the leader of the free world.

Biden’s Pattern of Behavior Lacks the Empathy He Promised

When it comes to the people he serves, in particular the working class, he has failed miserably in conveying he feels their pain.

Salena Zito

On Sunday, after spending several hours on Rehoboth Beach in Delaware, President Joe Biden was asked by a member of the press pool about the rising death toll in Hawaii.

Bloomberg reporter Justin Sink tweeted Biden’s “no comment” response as the president left for his home in Delaware.

With over 100 people dead and 10 times that number still unaccounted for, how hard would it have been for Biden to say something evoking the empathy the people of Hawaii need, the country needs, in those brief moments as he walked in the sand from his day at the beach?

But he didn’t. And we’ve seen this craven indifference before.

Almost to the day two years ago, a chaotic two-week evacuation of 125,000 people from Kabul resulted in the horrific deaths of 13 American service members; it took Biden over a week for him to address the deaths to the public, and when he did in a speech to the nation, he spent the entire 23 minutes forcefully rejecting any criticism of his decision and hailed the effort as an “extraordinary success.”

In fact, despite the terrorist bombing killing 13 service members at the Kabul airport during a tumultuous rush to leave the country, Biden said he believed with “all of my heart” that he had made a wise decision and stubbornly dismissed any assessment that he should have conducted that final moment evacuating people in a “more orderly manner.”

He projected to the American public, and to the families by proxy, a sordid lack of empathy, compassion and indifference.

Eighteen months later, the White House continued that chilling tone when spokesman John Kirby shrugged and smiled in reaction to the publication of the Biden administration’s report on the Afghanistan withdrawal and said he didn’t notice any mayhem. “For all this talk of chaos, I just didn’t see it, not from my perch,” Kirby, the National Security Council’s coordinator for strategic communications, said.

In February when a Norfolk-Southern train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, causing the spillage of thousands and thousands of gallons of hazardous chemicals in the air, soil and water in Columbiana County, Ohio, arguably changing their lives for at least a generation, it took Biden a whopping 18 days to make any kind of public statement about the situation.

Newsweek searched through the 380 messages released from the White House press pool from the date of the crash (Feb. 3, 2023) to Feb. 22, 2023, a deep dive that revealed no direct statements from Biden.

It wasn’t until Feb. 21 that Biden said anything, finally tweeting about the derailment. Biden once again stubbornly refused to concede any morsel of compassion. Even when pressed about when he would visit the site of the derailment and subsequent controlled burn, he said on Feb. 27 he had no plans to go there.

Five days later, he said he now would go to East Palestine in the future, but that was the last he mentioned the massive disaster.

In February 2020, Biden tweeted a clip of him in a moody ad filled with warm and fuzzy scenes of him interacting with voters as music crescendoed when he bragged that his promise as Empathizer-in-Chief would be fulfilled if voters elected him.

“Empathy matters,” he said. “Compassion matters. We have to reach out to one another and heal this country, and that’s what I’ll do as president.”

By noon on Aug. 14, many days after the Hawaii fires broke, Biden (or an aide) tweeted, “As residents of Hawai’i mourn the loss of life and devastation taking place across their beautiful home, we mourn with them. Like I said, not only our prayers are with those impacted-but every asset we have will be available to them.”

Less than an hour later, the White House said Biden would be traveling to Lake Tahoe for a week, leaving Friday and returning Thursday — not all that different than when he chose to go to Ukraine rather than going to East Palestine.

When Biden was running, the narrative coming from the Democrats, Republicans weary of Trump, and the media looking for signs of grace during the pandemic was that Biden was the standard-bearer of empathy because he had lost his first wife and daughter early in his career in a car crash and lost his son Beau to glioblastoma while he was vice president.

And yet despite all of the empathy hype, when it comes to the people he serves, in particular the working class, he has failed miserably in conveying he feels their pain. The nation has noticed, and his job approval ratings have never recovered from September 2021 when voters saw him as he really was, not as he wanted you to believe he was.

Heck, he even pretended his own granddaughter did not exist until New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd scolded him for his callousness, and he changed course in a Friday afternoon news dump.

By Monday afternoon, the White House defended Biden’s response and said the president is “deeply concerned” and sending federal aid as the nation looks on to a president who gave the impression of being emotionally detached about the fires, mounting deaths and overall emotional and economic devastation.

For Biden, the chance at redemption has vanished. At least when it comes to showing empathy, his misreading of what the country needs when a crisis affects fellow Americans has gone from a one-off to a pattern of behavior that chills even some of his most ardent supporters.

Sweetheart Special Counsel Weiss Has to Go

The more we learn about David Weiss, the more rotten his appointment by Merrick Garland appears to be.

Douglas Andrews

We thought Eric “Wingman” Holder was bad. And Loretta “Meet Me on the Tarmac” Lynch. But those two Obama-era attorneys general are mere pikers compared to Biden buddy Merrick Garland.

AG Garland, whose provable perjury and whose anti-parentanti-Catholicpro-abortion biases have been well documented in these pages, has been a reliable hatchet man for Joe Biden and his anti-constitutional depredations.

And to think: Garland was a whisker away from a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. Only Mitch McConnell, for all his faults, kept it from being so. And instead, Garland will go down in history as our nation’s most corrupt attorney general.

True to form, Garland last week appointed Delaware-based David Weiss as special counsel to “investigate” Hunter Biden. And the stench was overwhelming. Weiss, after all, was the architect of both the Great Slow Walk and the Sweetheart Deal: the nearly five-year-long foot-dragging investigation into Hunter Biden on relatively straightforward felony charges of evading taxes and lying on a federal gun form, and the subsequent effort, ultimately blown up by an honest judge, to get Hunter off on two misdemeanor tax charges and a diverted (read: thrown out) gun charge.

Nice “justice” if you can get it. And were it not for a couple of intrepid whistleblowers, Hunter Biden would’ve gotten it. This weekend, even The New York Times admitted it: “Earlier this year, The Times found, Mr. Weiss appeared willing to forgo any prosecution of Mr. Biden at all, and his office came close to agreeing to end the investigation without requiring a guilty plea on any charges.”

Wha happ-uh-nuh? wondered Hunter.

What happened is that Weiss’s position on letting Hunter off scot-free “changed in the spring, around the time a pair of I.R.S. officials on the case accused the Justice Department of hamstringing the investigation,” the Times continues. “Mr. Weiss suddenly demanded that Mr. Biden plead guilty to committing tax offenses.”

Integrity, it’s said, is doing the right thing when no one’s watching. And it’s clearly a concept that’s foreign to David Weiss. Again, were it not for two upstanding IRS whistleblowers — supervisory special agent Gary Shapley, a highly decorated 14-year veteran, and criminal investigator Joseph Ziegler, a 13-year IRS veteran and a self-described gay Democrat — Hunter Biden would’ve walked.

As for Weiss, he’s woven a tangled web. According to agent Shapley, he “told at least six witnesses last year that he lacked authority to charge the first son outside Delaware and was denied special counsel status.” Shapley then named names — six of them, in fact, who were witnesses to Weiss’s claim that he couldn’t press charges against Hunter Biden in Washington, DC, without the approval of the U.S. attorney in that jurisdiction.

And yet Garland insists that Weiss “was given complete authority to make decisions on his own.”

Furthermore, Weiss foiled the efforts of Shapley and his fellow IRS investigators to execute search warrants against Hunter Biden in several locations in mid-2020, most egregiously by tipping off Biden’s lawyers.

We’re not done with Weiss yet. In addition to slow-walking and sabotaging his own investigation of Hunter, he also caved to a sophomoric threat by defense attorney Chris Clark. “President Biden now unquestionably would be a fact witness for the defense in any criminal trial,” Clark wrote to Weiss. “This of all cases justifies neither the spectacle of a sitting President testifying at a criminal trial nor the potential for a resulting constitutional crisis.”

Ooooh, a constitutional crisis? Please. President Bill Clinton testified from the White House in the Whitewater investigation, and the nation managed to survive. So it’s not like Joe Biden’s testimony in his son’s case would’ve upset some delicate precedent.

Finally, word has filtered out that Weiss and Hunter’s late brother, Beau, used to work together. As The Washington Post reports, “When Delaware’s acting U.S. attorney David C. Weiss celebrated the settlement of a fraud case in 2010, he was joined by a key partner in the case: Beau Biden, the state’s attorney general.”

Imagine that. The Post continues: “Weiss worked with Joe Biden’s eldest son to hash out prosecution strategies. ‘We will continue to aggressively pursue all types of fraud in order to protect the public,’ Weiss said in his part of a statement with Beau Biden on the fraud case.”

Given all these conflicts and all this malfeasance, does anyone think David Weiss is even remotely fit to duly prosecute the case against Hunter Biden? And does anyone think he’ll legitimately explore the many well-documented connections between the first son and his then-VP dad, the “Big Guy”?

Of course not.

The question is: What are House and Senate Republicans going to do about it?

Chicago Dem Sets a Low Bar for Shootouts

By calling for a daytime cease-fire, a sorry city alderman pushes the envelope of ridiculousness.

Michael Swartz

The headlines are depressingly familiar: Crime is up in the big cities, even as their leaders insist, “There is no crime crisis.”

Sadly, though, the numbers say otherwise in one Democrat stronghold after another.

Chicago is one such example — as our Emmy Griffin described this past spring — but at least someone there is trying to think outside the box for solutions. Perhaps, in the spirit of trying to stem the flow of businesses leaving and young black men (along with innocent bystanders) dying in one gang-related shooting after another, a Chicago group has made the following request of the city’s thugs: “protect the youth … no sliding when the sun is out.”

For those not hip to the slang: Don’t go looking for a fight or to settle a score during daylight hours. Wait for the dark of night.

The moronic idea, from an advocacy group called Native Sons, spread quickly once it was shared by Chicago City Alderman Maria Hadden, making people think it was an actual legal proposal with her imprimatur. However, Hadden was just broadcasting the idea in her constituent newsletter.

Native Sons cofounder Tatiana Atkins described it this way: “We have to start somewhere. Our goal is to approach our city’s gun violence problem strategically and not all at once. Things didn’t become this way overnight, and change won’t happen overnight.”

But, according to the plan, a lot of shootings will happen overnight. “If people know that after a certain hour,” Atkins added, “the likelihood of them being shot by an unknown and unprovoked assailant are at a higher risk, they will be less likely to be out and about, and they may become more proactive with the supervision of their children.”

And while she describes the inverse curfew idea as one that has had “more positive feedback than negative” from the gang members she knows, it seems there’s already a program in place to approach the city’s violence problem — one that works 24 hours a day: the police. Unfortunately, the Chicago Police Department has nowhere near enough manpower to do the job, and the city’s law-abiding citizens are discouraged from protecting themselves thanks to the city’s draconian gun laws. (Given the city’s rampant corruption, though, it’s a sure bet that certain connected people have made arrangements for their own protection.)

However, it’s worth pointing out that Atkins has some solid analysis (note: sarcasm alert) of the problem. “Not everyone is willing to drop their beef,” she said. “If you aren’t mentally and emotionally equipped to solve disputes in a healthy manner, if you can’t help but harm each other, do so in a capacity in which children, elderly, and those not involved in high-risk activities are less likely to be affected.”

Of course, many young Chicagoans lack that mental and emotional equipment because they come from broken families, with parents often lost to violence, prison, or addiction. Thus, the kids are left to fend for themselves. Sadly, gangs have become the perverted family unit for many who are involved in the shootings, whether perpetrator or victim.

Rather than try to enforce an artificial curfew, perhaps the change Chicago — and our country at large — needs is a cultural one, stressing that the present father is cool, and the girl who waits until she’s married to have children is the role model.

Such a change, it seems, would go a long way toward protecting Chicago’s kids.

Women’s World Cup Wrap-Up

The USA giants fell early, and two underdogs met in the championship.

Emmy Griffin

The 2023 Women’s World Cup was one to watch. The biggest thing to process is that, for the first time in the team’s history, the U.S. Women’s National Team was nowhere near the spotlight of the final game. Going into this tournament, the U.S. team was the clear favorite, but it was knocked out in the Round of 16 against Sweden.

Heading to the championship final this weekend were two teams that have never made it this far. England’s national team, fondly known as the Lionesses, has made it to the knockout stage for the past five World Cups. But Spain? Well, its national team has only qualified for the World Cup three times. Neither team was really on the radar for being World Cup finalists.

In a stunning championship game, Spain’s Olga Carmona scored the only goal in the 29th minute. (Regrettably, Carmona found out after the final that her father had died.)

The Spanish women, referred to as La Roja, then held off the Lionesses for another 61 minutes plus 13 minutes of stoppage time. What a phenomenal ending to an unpredictable World Cup.

A lot of the coverage of the fantastic win by Spain has focused heavily on several controversies. One, the fraught relationship between several of Spain’s elite women players and the national team’s coach, Jorge Vilda. He apparently made working conditions untenable, and 15 players declared that they wouldn’t play for the national team as a result.

Another was the infamous unsolicited kiss from the Spain federation president, Luis Rubiales. He had shown exuberant affection to all the players — some were hugged and lifted into the air; the rest were kissed on the cheek. But when it came to Jenni Hermoso, the Spanish team’s lead scorer, he planted one right on her lips. Unprofessionalism has been a huge complaint by the women’s side in their battles with the federation, and this seems to be a more egregious example, though he later apologized.

Other publications covering the World Cup victory blamed the second-class-citizen status of women, or they declared that these women should use their newfound platform to champion causes.

If there is anything that this old women’s soccer fan would advise, it would be to ignore the noise. Enjoy your World Cup win. There are going to be thousands of young girls inspired by your courage and great skill. Be their role model, but don’t make the same mistake the U.S. women’s team and other Western teams have made in tournaments past. Don’t allow the faddish social justice agenda to dictate your platform, and certainly don’t denigrate your country.

Congratulations to Spain on a game well played.

Executive News Summary

Bad news for gun dealers, filling deflated police departments with illegals, RNC debate participants, and more.

Thomas Gallatin & Jordan Candler

Cross-Examination

  • Biden crackdown is bad news for gun dealers: Joe Biden’s attack on Americans’ Second Amendment rights in the name of “commonsense gun control” is resulting in an increase in the number of gun dealers losing their licenses. The number licenses revoked by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) last fiscal year topped out at 122. That number was up from 90 the previous year and 27 in fiscal year 2021. During both the Obama and Trump eras, the annual number of dealers who lost their licenses never exceeded 81. It’s apparent that Biden’s ATF has been ratcheting up its dubious paperwork demands on gun dealers in an effort to shut them down. One gun dealer who fell victim to Biden’s ATF contends, “This policy is designed to be a backdoor violation of the Second Amendment.” Ironically, Biden’s ATF is making an enemy out of gun dealers, who have acted as the first line of defense against illegal gun trafficking. As former ATF Deputy Assistant Director Peter Forcelli observes, “Why are we now beating an ally into submission?”
  • Pandemic windfall dries up: According to a recent study conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the “unprecedented” levels of “excess” savings American households accumulated during the pandemic are drying up. In August 2021, Americans’ cumulative savings peaked at $2.1 trillion. However, thanks to Bidenflation, those savings have quickly diminished. As of June of this year, the study estimated cumulative savings have fallen below $190 billion. What was it Biden said about not taxing the middle class?
  • Filling deflated police departments with illegal aliens: Thanks to leftist officials lending their voices to the nonsensical demands of the radical Left and their messages demonizing cops, several Democrat-run states from California to Illinois are finding their police forces depleted. Indeed, who would want to take the risk of being a law enforcement officer in these anti-cop states? To address this issue, some Democrat lawmakers in these states are seeking to solve the problem of deflated police departments by filling them with noncitizens, including illegal aliens. This should be a joke, but this nonsense is real. How does one make the argument that an individual whose very presence in the country is a willful violation of law be empowered and trusted to fairly and honestly enforce the law over legal citizens? There is obviously no respect for the rule of law if such a scenario is actually employed.
  • The Squad’s private security spending spree: The cadre of socialist lawmakers in the House known as The Squad infamously espouse anti-police policies, yet they have collectively spent over $1.2 million of their campaign cash on private security. The biggest spender of the group is Cori Bush (D-MO), who has shelled out more than $730,000 on private security, $75,000 of which has gone directly to her husband. The next of the big spenders is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), whose security spending comes in at $272,914. Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar is third on the list at $125,683. This spending is the height of hypocrisy given their anti-police stance. However, Squad members have also used security spending to spin their racist victimhood narrative, claiming that the threat from white racists demands it.
  • RNC debate participants: On Monday, the Republican National Committee released the list of presidential primary candidates who have met the criteria and will be engaging in the first debate on Wednesday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. The candidates in alphabetical order are as follows: Doug Burgum, Chris Christie, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Asa Hutchinson, Mike Pence, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Tim Scott. Notably, Donald Trump has enjoyed a significant lead in the polls and announced earlier this week that he will not attend. Meanwhile, there has been some criticism over the criteria standards set by the RNC for debate eligibility, keeping such individuals as Larry Elder from making the stage. However, the RNC’s eligibility bar is set very low. If a candidate can’t manage to meet the threshold of polling at 1% or higher in at least three national polls and have a minimum of 40,000 unique donors, do they really have any business being on the stage or in the race?

SHORT CUTS

The BIG Lies

“[Donald Trump’s] America First policy, walking away from the rest of the world, has made us weaker, not stronger.” —Joe Biden

“These [Biden] investigations, they don’t matter to the average American people. This is the right-wing, the hard right-wing talking to each other.” —Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY)

“People seem to forget that this is not the person who’s simply out there having people write checks for no reason. He’s a capable, educated, experienced person.” —Hunter Biden attorney Abbe Lowell

“Yes, we have problems at the border, but the statement that it’s open is simply silly.” —former Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA)

“If any party, a political party, is trying to make it harder and more difficult to vote, which is something we’ve seen the Republican Party do in a number of states across the country over the last couple of years, it’s because they don’t want more people to go out there and voice their view and voice who they want to support.” —MSNBC’s Jen Psaki

“The positions that the core candidates and leaders of the Republican Party have on … these crazy wackadoo cultural debates … [are] out of touch with the public.” —Jen Psaki

Pot Calling the Kettle Black

“I think Donald Trump and the Republican Party have poisoned [the system] to people. No one trusts our institutions, no one trusts Congress, no one trusts any of us, because all they do is attack our families, do those types of things.” —Minnesota Governor Tim Walz

Theater of the Absurd

“[Joe Biden has] been one of the most highly effective presidents we’ve ever seen.” —Tim Walz

“The Biden agenda has actually done more to tame inflation, to start to bring back manufacturing, to focus on high-tech chip industry, and to focus on climate change and infrastructure than any other country in the world.” —Tim Walz

“Democrats understand if you want to have reproductive freedoms, if you want to move towards a climate agenda that actually works, if you want decency in the White House, you’ve got one choice, and that’s to vote for Joe Biden.” —Tim Walz

“I think folks are just tired of it all. But the fact of the matter is, this isn’t about Joe Biden’s age. This is about the democracy. And … as we get closer to the election, they’ll see that.” —Tim Walz

Belly Laugh of the Day

“The Democrats are lucky, frankly, to have a candidate in Biden who has presided over an incredibly strong economic recovery, who has presided over pretty good international peacemaking efforts … and who I believe whose numbers will go up as inflation recedes, as it is. And the strong job numbers are there. And they’re extremely lucky to have a candidate, frankly, who’s not a member of what you would call the coastal elite. … Democrats are not grateful enough for what they have, in my view.” —New York Times columnist David Brooks

Hot Air

“Every day around the world, the impact of the climate crisis is stark and it is vivid. We are seeing it in real time.” —Kamala Harris

“I think [climate change] is one of the most prominent threats that we face.” —DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

“Yes. It did.” —Hawaii Governor Josh Green when asked, “Are you saying climate change amplified the cost of human error?”

“Severe weather events are going to get more frequent and more severe. … We’ve had a few wildfires but nothing that threatened a whole city — nothing that flattened a whole city. And I just think this is the new normal for not just the state of Hawaii but for the whole planet — for the whole country.” —Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI)

“We need to decarbonize our economy so these fires don’t ravage us. There’s not enough firetrucks in the world to protect us if we don’t stop climate change.” —Washington Governor Jay Inslee

Upright

“Ultimately, a movement can’t be about the personality of one individual. The movement has got to be about what are you trying to achieve on behalf of the American people, and that’s got to be based in principle. Because if you’re not rooted in principle — if all we are is listless vessels that [are] just supposed to follow, you know, whatever happens to come down the pike on Truth Social every morning — that’s not going to be a durable movement.” —Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

Victor Davis Hanson: California’s Headed for ‘Oblivion’ | Christian Research Network

“This is what the Progressives want for all of us. It is what they are doing in every city and now suburban and rural areas.”

(Mary Dowling – Independent Sentinel) During an interview with California Insider, Victor Davis Hanson was asked where California was headed. Without hesitation, he said, it is “headed to oblivion.” He explained that people are leaving California to go to hell-hot Texas or desert Nevada, that have become paradises in their minds. We took paradise and turned it into hell, so they’re leaving.

He said it was hard to destroy California given its huge amounts of timber minerals, oil, natural gas, and its four of the top-rated universities in the world. “It’s hard to destroy that inheritance, but we did,” he said. View article →

Trump to release taped interview with Tucker Carlson, skipping GOP debate

Trump advisers said the interview had already been recorded. It is not yet clear where the interview will appear. Carlson has started a show on X, formerly called Twitter, but Trump sees the platform as a rival to Truth Social, which he helped create.

Trump’s plans were first reported by the New York Times. “We cannot confirm or deny — stay tuned.” his campaign spokesman, Steven Cheung, told The Washington Post on Saturday.

A person close to Carlson said that an online airing of a taped interview with Trump is the likely plan.
