October 20 Evening Verse of The Day

7:27 The Son of Man will take his throne and rule over his everlasting kingdom. Then the people—the believing remnant of Israel, also called holy ones—will receive this kingdom under the authority of their Messiah, the Son of Man.[1]

7:27 an everlasting kingdom Daniel does not elaborate on the details of this kingdom. His focus is not on the kingdom itself; it is on the fact that the Gentile kingdoms and the persecution associated with them will come to an end.[2]

7:27 the kingdoms … given to … the saints. God’s kingdom in both earthly (Rev 20:4) and heavenly phases (Rev 21:27; 22:3, 4, 14).[3]

Ver. 27. And the kingdom and dominion shall be given to the people of the saints.—

The Reign of the Saints:

Attend to some preliminary remarks.

1. The doctrine of the text does not require us to believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is, at some future time; to return in person to our world and set up a visible and theocratic empire upon all these continents. His kingdom is, and is to be, a spiritual kingdom: an empire that asks and needs no visible manifestation of its Lord, no earthly metropolis, or sceptre, or throne.

2. The Scriptures do not require us to teach or to believe this doctrine even in any absolute, extreme, and unexceptionable sense. The saints as persons, and their great Christian maxims as principles, shall ultimately win such an ascendency over all nations, interests, institutions, and affairs, that this whole world shall become an orderly and well-governed Christian empire.

3. As to the way in which this great conquest is to be achieved. Are the saints of the Most High, after a series of moral victories, wrought with peaceful weapons, and by the aid of the all-conquering Spirit of God, to change their tactics and go forth, in coming times, with their armies, to dislodge the wicked, and settle as victors on all the continents? The Scriptures everywhere discourage such conclusions. We have read history to little purpose if we have not seen that the only revolutions which are permanent and deep are those which take place underneath the surface—penetrating and reconstructing a nation’s thoughts. Accordingly, there are, in every community, natural processes and lawful methods by which to effect, first a moral, and then a civil revolution. It is a great law of nature, a law operating among all the orders of the animate creation, that the superior race shall win ultimate ascendency over the inferior. The earth is covered with a vast framework of social institutions, whose present and special office it is to guard, and administer, and conserve the temporal interests of nations. Will the saints of the Most High, as they advance and take possession of the world, overturn this great edifice of social order? Will they set up in their place the one great institution, the Church, making all offices spiritual? The Papist answers “Yes.” But the Scriptures hold no such language. Since civil order is as indispensable to social well-being as spiritual thrift, the State is an institution as truly Divine as the Church. The one is Christ’s authoritative organisation, for the control and government of things spiritual; the other is His twin organisation, for the management and direction of things temporal.

4. According to all Scriptural intimations, the conquest of the nations for Christ will be a very gradual conquest. Looking into the future, through the prophetic symbols, is like looking over the tops of the mountains to the distant sky. As we gaze we behold one summit behind another, and beyond the farthest the blue heavens. But how far it may be from the first peak to the second, and how far from the last to the firmament beyond, we cannot determine or tell.

5. We may say that the predicted conquest and reign of the saints is to be, and in a two-fold sense, complete and universal. It will include all races, it will embrace all arts, sciences, trades, interests, governments, usages, compacts, relations. That the people of God will one day possess and govern the world might be conclusively argued:

(1) From the known nature of their religion. Who are the ultimate heirs of the world’s wealth? They who have, and shall continue to have, the qualities that acquire and preserve wealth. And who are these? Not the heathen. For their life is ever a life of idleness, and unthrift, and loss. Not the wicked or worldly; in Christian lands-for though a single generation of these may practice the industries, and observe the moderation, which insure an estate, they can never perpetuate these property-preserving habits. But the religion of the New Testament not only implants the qualitied which acquire and retain wealth, it preserves them.

(2) From the actual history of the Church, since it has had its place among the nations. When the Saviour left the world, His disciples were indigent and helpless and weak.

(3) All the indications of Providence point, as with a prophetic finger, to the same grand consummation, the delivery of the world into the hands of tile saints. The old religions of the heathen have become confessedly effete and decrepit. Not one of them can ever spread. What is to come when the various tottering systems reel in the tempest, and go down never again to rise? When Antichrist falls, then comes the reign of the saints. Application.

1. In this great work of possessing and governing the world, the people of God must never allow themselves to confine their endeavours to any single achievement, but must preserve a breadth and amplitude of purpose equal to their universal mission.

2. Neglect or debility in any one department of this great work of saintly conquest and control, enfeebles and endangers the whole enterprise. (W. Clark, D.D.)

The Church of the Future:

Around the grand mosque of Damascus there clusters a vast accumulation of history. On the spot where it stands to-day, after a lapse of nearly 1,400 years, there was originally erected, in the first century of our era, a heathen temple. In the middle of the fourth century this temple was destroyed by the Roman general Theodosius the Great, and on its ruins, in the beginning of the fifth century, Arcadius, the elder son of Theodosius, built a Christian house of worship. This latter house, though for 300 years the Cathedral of Damascus, became in the eighth century a Moslem possession, and for some thousand years it has been used as a Mohammedan mosque. No visit to Damascus is quite complete without a sight of this historic structure. The most interesting feature, however, of this curious building is not its age, nor its history, nor its present prominence, but rather a single sentence engraved upon the vestibule. The inscription is in Greek characters and reads thus: “Thy kingdom, O Christ, is an everlasting kingdom, and Thy dominion endureth throughout all generations.” There, on this Mohammedan mosque, and after ten centuries of Moslem occupation, cut deep in the enduring stone, the Christian record remains—a record of faith, of hope and of confidence on the part of the Damascus Christians in the ultimate triumph of the Kingdom of God. Almost 2,000 years have rolled away since Jesus Christ opened in Bethlehem the marvellous scene of Divinity in humanity, and still the Church of His grace abides. Other kingdoms have perished, mowed down by the resistless scythe of time—Babylon, Media, Macedonia, Persia, Syria, Egypt, Greece, Rome—each swept away almost as though it had never flourished, while the Church founded on the rock by the humble Nazarene lives and grows. And the Church of the future will be more glorious than the Church of the past. “Let us believe and know that Christianity is advancing all the time; that, though men’s hearts may fail them through fear, the Church goes on in God-guided and irresistible movements.” To this happy conclusion of Mr. Gladstone’s must come every intelligent student of history. The world grows better from century to century, because God reigns supreme from generation to generation. The golden age of the Church is not in the yesterday of the past, nor in the to-day of the present, but in the to-morrow of the future.

I. In the first place, what will be the attitude of the Church of the future in relation to the public worship? With all confidence may we not say that the Church, come what may, will never cease to worship? The worshipful impulse is as deep as it is universal, as pervasive as it is prevalent. Worshipfulness is a differentiating characteristic of the rightly-constituted soul. And this instinctive worshipful impulse will be more intelligently educated and more reverently developed in the future days of Christianity’s evolution. With the developing years shall come to the Church of God clearer visions and broader outlooks, and a deepened sense of righteousness, with profounder awe in the presence of spiritual realities; and along with this there cannot fail to be developed a more noble, God-pleasing, eternity-piercing worship in the hearts of God’s children.

II. In the second place, what will be the attitude of the Church of the future in relation to the Bible as the final and authoritative revelation of God’s will and way to men? Of all the books that fill our libraries and thrill our hearts this is the most wonderful. It is the fullest and richest thesaurus of Divine wisdom and human knowledge. All books, it has been said, are of two classes—books made from other books, and books from which other books are made—and to the latter class, in a pre-eminent degree, belongs this Word of God. And it seems to the truest and most intelligent supporters of the old Book that things are shaping themselves to-day, as never before, for unlimited victories for the Word of God. Certain facts and conditions there are which appear a sure prelude to a superb Biblical renaissance; the publication and distribution of the revised Scriptures, the profound delving and exhaustive research of historical critics, the patient investigation of modern science; the recent discovery and explorations of ancient cities by faithful archæologists, and, along with all this, the growing intelligence of the modern Christian Church, which is rejecting, as never before, man-made creeds and formulas. Fear not the controversies now raging about the Bible. The ages of theological agitation and discussion have always been the ages of progress and promise. Better the agitations of the days of Augustine and Athanasius and Luther than the tranquility of the Middle Ages.

III. In the third place, what will be the attitude of the Church of the future in relation to Jesus Christ, as God’s Son and man’s Saviour? Here we confront the great problem of Christianity to-day, than which no greater can ever arise—the Lord of Glory; His Miraculous Incarnation, His Spotless Character, His Transcendent Teaching, His Majestic Deeds, His Sacrificial Death, His Glorious Resurrection, His Radiant Ascension, His Position at the Right Hand of the Majesty on High, and His Abiding Presence in human life and history. A truer and more pregnant sentence the great Christlieb never uttered than when he wrote that Christ is Christianity, as Plato was never Platonism, and Mohammed never Mohammedanism, and Buddha never Buddhism. We often speak of Christianity’s unparalleled power, and yet let us remember that, since the stream cannot rise higher than its source, Jesus Christ is the Living Personal Force because of whom all ages and races have been agitated and convulsed. Recall the splendid words of Dr. Wace, in his notable controversy with Huxley: “The strength of the Christian Church is not in its creed, but in its Christ. They see Him there; they hear His voice; they listen and they believe in Him. It is not so much that they accept certain doctrines taught by Him as that they accept Himself, their Lord and their God. It is with this living personal force that Agnosticism has to deal; and as long as the Gospels present Him to human hearts, so long will the Christian faith and the Christian Church, in their main characteristics, be vital and permanent forces in the Christian world.” Here is and ever shall be Christianity’s glory, the Son of God and the Son of Mary—the Christ who on earth matched every sermon with a service and every doctrine with a doing; the Christ who in Heaven is enthroned amid native scenes and clothed with Divine anthority, recognised more and more in the Church and world as the King of kings and the Lord of lords. And this Exalted Christ, let us never forget, is the once Crucified Christ. More in the Church of the future, if possible, than in the Church of the past will the Cross be emphasised and glorified. The richest theme of the Church’s future will be God in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself. Much of the preaching in our day, even in Evangelical pulpits, is struck to a lower key.

IV. In the fourth place, what will be the attitude of the Church of the future to the problem Sociological? A most practical and important question this, also peculiarly suited to our day and generation. Ours is pre-eminently an age of practical benevolence and utilitarian tendencies. We are unlike all of our predecessors. The Roman craved the display of wondrous power and imperial sway. The Greek delighted to lose himself in the abstruse labyrinth of metaphysics. The Hebrew made it part of his religion to bow down before hoary rites and flaming sacrifice. We live in a stern age of fact; an age in which, as a scholarly master of Sociology has well said, Society is coming to itself and emphasising Sociology, Social ethics, Social politics; an age in which religion means the salvation of the soul, but also, as it meant with Jesus, the feeding of the hungry, the clothing of the naked, the healing of the sick, and relief, comfort, and help for the whole being. With the deeper life and broader outlook which the coming century will bring to the children of God there will be felt, with a new power, the truth that there is nothing secular which religion cannot both touch and glorify; that God never meant His saints to have one Gospel for Sunday and another for Monday, one religion for the Church and another for the world, one conscience for Caesar and another for Jehovah, that goodness is not a little island here and there in the great ocean of life, but rather the all-permeating salt that fills every part of the bright, broad sea.

V. In the fifth place, what will be the attitude of the Church of the future in relation to Christian unity? To this interesting question it may be answered that there never was among God’s people, as to-day, such an unity of spirit in the bonds of peace. But the Church may never, should never, become organically one. Men differ too widely in birth and education for this ever to be accomplished. The universal law of God in grace, as in Nature, is unity in diversity. And yet, with absolute fidelity to the great fundamental truths of the Gospel, we shall more and more realise the prayer of the Master, “that they all may be one, as Thou, Father, art in Me and I in Thee”; not one in organic union, but one in heart and purpose, in will and work.

VI. In the sixth place, what will be the attitude of the Church of the future in relation to world-wide-evangelisation? The spirit of missions, which is the Spirit of Christ, is recognised and actualised to-day as perhaps never before. The history of the sacred, self-sacrificing anointing of nineteen hundred years ago repeats itself from time to time. One hundred years ago the Church drew out of its hiding-place, where for centuries it had lain in almost absolute inutility, the glorious commission of its Lord. And to-day everywhere in Christian lands the orders of our Lord are being obeyed and appreciated with something of their far-reaching meaning and transcendent glory. To-day the Bible is within reach of 500,000,000 of the human race, and many things in connection with the missionary cause—the Word of God, the history of the past, the condition of the present, the promises of the future—appear to be hastening “that one Divine, far-off event to which the whole creation moves,” the conquest of the world by the King of Glory and the Prince of Peace! (K. B. Tupper, D.D.)[4]

This verse assures us how these predictions concerning the destruction of the beast regard the Church’s safety. Thus the faithful might know themselves noticed by God, and how the changes which successively happened tended to the same end—the acknowledgment on the part of the pious of their continuance under the care and guardianship of God. For any discussion of the four monarchies would have been cold and useless, unless there had been added God’s peculiar care of his own Church, and his conducting the affairs of the world for the safety of his people. As we have said in other places, God’s elect people are of more consequence than all the kingdoms which are conspicuous in the world. (Isa. 43:3.) This, then, is the sense of the words. If we separate this verse from its context, the prophecy will still have its use. We may elicit from it how all things which seem stable in the world are yet perishable, and nothing is so firm as not to be subject every moment to constant variation. But the chief intention of this prediction is, as I have said, to shew the relation of all events to the safety of the pious. When, therefore, all things seem carried away by the blind impulse of chance, we ought always to contemplate God as watching for his Church, and tempering all storms and all commotions to the service and safety of the pious, who rest upon his Providence. These two things, then, are mutually in accordance, namely, the slaying of the fourth beast, and the giving of the kingdom and authority to the people of the saints. This does not seem to have been accomplished yet; and hence many, nay, almost all, except the Jews, have treated this prophecy as relating to the final day of Christ’s advent. All Christian interpreters agree in this; but, as I have shewn before, they pervert the Prophet’s intention. As to the Jews, theirs is no explanation at all, for they are not only foolish and stupid, but even crazy. And since their object is the adulteration of sound doctrine, God also blinds them till they become utterly in the dark, and both trifling and childish; and if I were to stop to refute their crudities, I should never come to an end.

This prophecy does not seem to be accomplished at the destruction of the beast; but this is easily explained. We know how magnificently the prophets speak of Christ’s kingdom, and adore his dignity and glory with splendid eulogies; and although these are not exaggerated, yet if judged of by human perceptions, you would surely think them exceedingly extravagant, and find neither solidity nor firmness in their words. And no wonder: for Christ’s kingdom and his dignity cannot be perceived by carnal eyes, nor even comprehended by the human intellect. Let those who appear the most sagacious of men combine together all their clear sightedness, yet they can never ascend to the height of Christ’s kingdom, which surpasses the very heavens. Nothing is more contrary to our natural judgment than to seek life in death, riches in poverty and want, glory in shame and disgrace—to be wanderers in this world, and at the same time its heirs! Our minds cannot naturally comprehend these things. No wonder, then, if mortals judge erroneously of Christ’s kingdom, and are blind in the midst of light. Still there is no defect in the Prophet’s expressions, for they depict for us the visible image of Christ’s kingdom, and accommodate themselves to our dulness. They enable us to perceive the analogy between things earthly and visible, and that spiritual blessedness which Christ has afforded to us, and which we now possess through hope in him. For while we only hope, our happiness is concealed from us; it is not perceptible by our eyes or by any of our senses.

Let us now return to the passage. Daniel first of all says, A kingdom, and power, and extensive dominion, shall be given to the people of the holy ones. This was partially fulfilled when the Gospel emerged from persecution: then the name of Christ was everywhere celebrated and held in honour and esteem, while previously it had been the subject of the greatest envy and hatred. For nothing had been more hated and detested for many years than the name of Christ. God, therefore, then gave the kingdom to his people, when he was acknowledged as the Redeemer of the world throughout its many changes, after having been formerly despised and utterly rejected. I may here remark again, and impress upon the memory what I have frequently touched upon, namely, the custom of the Prophets, in treating of Christ’s kingdom, to extend their meaning further than its first beginnings; and they do this while they dwell upon its commencement. Thus Daniel or the angel does not predict here occurrences connected with the advent of Christ as Judge of the world, but with the first preaching and promulgation of the Gospel, and the celebration of the name of Christ. But this does not prevent him from drawing a magnificent picture of Christ’s reign, and embracing its final completion. It is sufficient for us to perceive how God begins to give the kingdom to his elect people, when, by the power of his Spirit, the doctrine of the holy Gospel was everywhere received in the world. The sudden change which it occasioned was incredible, but this is a customary result; for, when anything is predicted, we think it a fable and a dream, and when God performs what we never would have thought of, the event appears to us trifling, and we treat it as of no moment. For example, when the preaching of the Gospel commenced, no one would have thought its success could have been so great and so prosperous; nay, two hundred years before Christ was manifest, when religion was almost blotted out, and the Jews were execrated by the whole world, who would have thought the Law would spring from Zion? Yet God erected his sceptre there. The dignity of the kingdom had vanished, the offspring of David was extinct. For the family of Jesse was but a trunk, after the simile used by the prophet Isaiah. (Chap. 11:1.) If any one had asked all the Jews one after another, no one would have believed the possibility of those events which accompanied the preaching of the Gospel; but at length the dignity and virtue of the kingdom of David shone forth in Christ. Yet it vanishes before our eyes, and we seek new miracles, as if God had not sufficiently proved himself to have spoken by his prophets! Thus we observe how the Prophet keeps within bounds when he says, A kingdom, and a power, and a magnitude of empire was given to the people of the saints.

He adds, An empire under the whole heavens. Here the Rabbi Abarbinel, who thinks himself superior to all others, rejects our idea of the spiritual reign of Christ as a foolish imagination. For the kingdom of God, he says, is established under the whole heavens, and is given to the people of the saints. If it is established under heaven, says he, it is earthly, and if earthly, therefore not spiritual. This seems in truth a very subtle argument, as if God could not reign in the world except as an ordinary mortal. As often as Scripture says “God reigns,” according to this argument God must be transfigured into human nature, otherwise there will be no kingdom of God except it is earthly, and if earthly it is temporal, and therefore perishable. Hence we must infer that God changes his nature. His kingdom, then, will consist in opulence, and military power and parade, and the common luxuries of life, so that God will become unlike himself. We perceive the puerile trifling of those Rabbis who pretend to glory in their ingenuity, to the total destruction of the whole teaching of piety. They intend nothing else than to adulterate the purity of Scripture by their foul and senseless comments. But we know the reign of God and of Christ, although existing in the world, not to be of it, (John 18:36;) the meaning of the two expressions is exactly the opposite. God, therefore, still exercises his heavenly reign in the world, because he dwells in the hearts of his people by his Spirit. While God held his seat at Jerusalem, was his kingdom merely an earthly and corruptible one? By no means, for by the possession of an earthly habitation he did not cease to be in heaven also. Thus the angel instructed the Prophet concerning the saints who are pilgrims in the world, and yet shall enjoy the kingdom and possess the greatest power under heaven. Hence also we correctly conclude, that this vision ought not to be explained of the final advent of Christ, but of the intermediate state of the Church. The saints began to reign under heaven, when Christ ushered in his kingdom by the promulgation of his Gospel.

Another point must be noticed,—what belongs to the head is transferred to the body. There is nothing new in this, as the supreme power is constantly promised by the Prophets to the Church, especially by Isaiah, who often predicts its complete supremacy. The Papists seize upon such testimonies to clothe themselves in the spoils of God, as if God had resigned his right to them! But they are immersed in the same error with the Jews, who swell with pride whenever such dignity is promised to the elect people, as if they could remain separate from God and yet obtain the right of treading the whole world under foot. The Papists also do exactly the same. We, however, must be guided by a very different rule, namely, in consequence of the intimate union between Christ and his Church, the peculiar attribute of Christ himself is often transferred to his body. Not that the Church reigns by itself; but Christ, as its only supreme head, obtains dominion therein, and not for his own private advantage—for what need has he of this dominion? but for the common safety of all its members. Wherefore Christ is our King, and he designs to erect his throne in the midst of us; he uses nothing for his own advantage, but communicates all things to us, and renders them useful to us; hence, we are deservedly called kings, because he reigns, and as I have already said, language which is exclusively appropriate to him, is transferred to us in consequence of the intimate communion existing between the head and the members.

This is also the sense of the phrase here added by the Prophet, All powers shall serve and obey it. I have no doubt the angel here confirmed Isaiah’s prophecy, as the Holy Spirit, the better to confirm and strengthen the faith of the pious, often reconciles one Prophet with another, and thus their mutual agreement becomes the seal of their truth. It is said in Isaiah, The kingdom and the land which will not serve thee, shall be destroyed: kings shall come and adore thee, the people shall offer thee gifts. (Chap. 60:12.) In the Psalms it is said, “Kings shall assemble together, to serve God.” (Ps. 102:22.) And Isaiah treats very fully on the empire of the Church. The angel now repeats the same thing, to add, as I have said, greater confidence and authority to the prophecy of Isaiah. Meanwhile, we observe how completely all the Prophets agree, and at the same time we interpret these words of the kingdom of Christ, from the period at which the teaching of the gospel was rendered remarkably conspicuous; for then God’s royal sceptre went forth from Jerusalem, and shone far and wide, while the Lord was extending his hand and his authority over all the regions of the world. As all these important events tended to the common salvation of the Church, it is said, The kingdom shall belong to the holy people. As to the phrase, The saints of the high ones, I have already explained why the Prophet applies this phrase to the faithful, and why the angel also does the same; namely, because God separated them from the world, and they were always looking upwards and drawing all their hopes from above. Then, as to the Rabbi whom I cited, he twists this passage, and tries to shew that the Prophet did not speak of Christ, when he says he saw the figure of the Son of man. But this is complete trifling, for he asserts the Son of man to mean “the people of the saints,” and thus the phrase would have no reference to Christ, but to the whole offspring of Abraham. We must not be surprised at the shameful ignorance of these Rabbis, and at their blundering at the very rudiments, since they do not acknowledge the necessity for a Mediator, through whom alone the Church can obtain any favour before God. They boast in what we also allow—in the sons of Abraham being the elect, and in this title as availing to render them a holy people, and heirs of God, and a kingdom of priests. This is true, but on what was their covenant of adoption founded but on Christ? Hence their separating the Church from the Mediator, is like leaving a mutilated body apart from its disjoined head. Besides, from what the Prophet stated before about the Son of man, his subject is evidently changed in this verse. He stated there, power was given to the Son of man after he had arrived at the Ancient of days, and the Son of man, or at least his likeness, appeared in the clouds. First of all, we must notice this likeness, as it were the Son of man, as we have already explained the vision. Surely Abraham’s posterity were really men, but the vision offered to the Prophet was but a similitude; as Christ had not yet put on our flesh, this was only a prelude to his future manifestation in the flesh. Here he speaks openly and without a figure of the people of the saints, and this prophecy depends upon the former one. For unless Christ were seated at his Father’s right hand, and had obtained supreme dominion, causing every knee to bend before him, the Church could never exercise its power. Thus we observe how all things mutually agree among each other.

As, however, it is certain that many have perseveringly rebelled against God and the teaching of his gospel, it may seem absurd for the angel to pronounce all the powers of the world obedient and submissive. But it is worth while to study the customary methods of scriptural expression. For instance, by the phrase “all people,” the Spirit does not mean every single person, but simply some out of every nation who should submit to Christ’s yoke, acknowledge him to be king, and obediently obey his Church. How often do these sentiments occur in the prophets? All nations shall come—all kings shall serve. At that time no king existed who was not professedly an enemy of true piety, and who did not desire the abolition of the very name of his law. The prophets enlarge thus magnificently on the future restoration of this kingdom, as we have stated before, in consequence of the event being so utterly incredible. So, also, in this place all powers, says he, shall serve and obey him; that is, no power shall so boast in its loftiness, as not willingly to become subject to the Church, although at present all so fully despise it; nay, while they rage with all their might against the most wretched Church, and while they tread it most ignominiously under foot, even then they shall be subject to it. This we know to have been amply fulfilled. Some persons foolishly press beyond their meaning words of universal import, as when Paul says, God wishes all to be saved. Hence, they say, no one is predetermined for destruction, but all are elect, that is, God is not God. (1 Tim. 2:4.) But we are not surprised at such madness as this, corrupting the impious and profane, who desire by their cavils to promote disbelief in all the oracles of the Spirit. Let us clearly comprehend the frequency of this figure of speech; when the Holy Spirit names “all,” he means some out of all nations, and not every one universally.[5]

God Is in the Front Line | VCY

The Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.Deuteronomy 31:8

In the presence of a great work or a great warfare, here is a text which should help us to buckle on our harness. If Jehovah Himself goes before us, it must be safe to follow. Who can obstruct our progress if the Lord Himself is in the van? Come, brother soldiers, let us make a prompt advance! Why do we hesitate to pass on to victory?

Nor is the Lord before us only; He is with us. Above, beneath, around, within is the omnipotent, omnipresent One. In all time, even to eternity, He will be with us even as He has been. How this should nerve our arm! Dash at it boldly, ye soldiers of the cross, for the Lord of hosts is with us!

Being before us and with us, He will never withdraw His help. He cannot fail in Himself, and He will not fail toward us. He will continue to help us according to our need, even to the end. As He cannot fail us, so He will not forsake us. He will always be both able and willing to grant us strength and succor till fighting days are gone.

Let us not fear nor be dismayed; for the Lord of hosts will go down to the battle with us, will bear the brunt of the fight, and give us the victory.

Our Incomparable Companion | Daily Devotionals by Thoughts about God.

Having a faithful friend is one of God’s greatest blessings. No matter what’s going on in your life, you can count on that person to stick with you. However, there is no guarantee that you won’t lose that friend. Unavoidable circumstances like relocation, illness, or death may take your companion away, but if you are a Christian, you have a friend who will never leave you.

He’s the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus called the Helper. He’s no fair-weather friend, slipping in and out of our lives when it’s to His advantage. When He takes up residence within us, He comes to stay forever(John 14:16).

In most human relationships, we try to avoid the use of sweeping negative or positive statements such as, “You are always late,” or “You are always there for me.” However, such superlative declarations are completely fitting when applied to the Holy Spirit. Listen to how the Lord Jesus described Him:

  • “He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you” (John 14:26).
  •  “He will testify about Me” (John 15:26).
  •  “He will guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13).
  •  “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you” (John 16:15).

Throughout the New Testament epistles, we find even more descriptions of this marvelous companion. His ministry in our lives is varied, and His accomplishments in and through us are many. How wealthy we are to have the Holy Spirit. He is a friend who truly sticks closer than a brother!

“The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” 1 Samuel 17:37

Confidence can be dangerous.

During the challenging and overwhelming circumstances we encounter, confidence can lead to arrogance and pride. It can also deaden our intrinsic need to rely on and trust in God. That can thrust us into a scenario we are completely unprepared to face. Such was not the case with David.

While tending sheep, David had been experiencing the sovereign power of the Lord and an intimate relationship him. This season of encountering God’s faithfulness and protection fortified David’s faith and prepared him for what lay ahead — facing the mammoth Philistine named Goliath.

David was so confident of his God’s providential prowess. He declared it out loud in the verse above, believing he would be successful over the towering giant who challenged the Israelite camp. David’s faith in action enabled him to kill Goliath with a single stone to the forehead. He acknowledged that it was God who deserved the glory.

I never had the confidence to take on things that scared me until I came into a relationship with God. It was only then that, through my experience of God and encouragement from him, I was able to take on whatever life threw at me. Time and again, those victories have brought me to a place of humility. Because I recognize my need for God’s help, I can live out a faith that’s evident to others.

You can have this right kind of confidence, too. Draw near, rely on his power, and dispel your fears.

Heavenly Father, I can’t begin to count the times when I was afraid to try something, but it was you who gave me the credence to go forward in faith and tackle the scariest of things. May my faith continue to be active, no matter what I encounter, and my confidence be firmly rooted in you. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Have you ever taken glory for your own confidence in a situation when it was God who was central in the victory? Take to heart and meditate on the words of David, making them your own as you continue to live a life of active faith.

Hamas Is a Jihadist Organization Committed to Israel’s Total Destruction
While Israel employs a Western military concept that avoids war and sanctifies the value of life, the jihadist concept aspires to self-sacrifice, death, and a cosmic religious struggle against “Jewish infidels.” Hamas has no concern whatsoever for the welfare of the local Gazan population, which means it does not have the Achilles’ heel of the Israeli side: the commitment to uphold the sanctity of life for both its citizens and its soldiers.

It’s Islam, Stupid
It’s not about Israel, colonialism, globalism or capitalism; it’s about Islam. Instead of “regional dispute”, say Islam. Instead of “cycle of violence”, say Islam. Instead of militants, say Islam. Instead of terrorists, say Islam. Instead of war, say Islam. One little word explains all of this. One little world has led to an endless world of horror.

U.S. Military Could Be Used Against Hezbollah If It Joins The War Against Israel
We are witnessing an old-fashioned standoff in the Middle East right now. After everything that has happened, there is no way that Israel can allow Hamas to survive.

America begins to seize Chinese business and land in America
Arkansas has become the first state to order that a Chinese company give up ownership of local land, amid fears of attempts by Beijing to malignly infiltrate and influence the U.S. through various means. Microchip breakthrough may reshape the future of AI
A prototype microchip design revealed today by IBM could pave the way for a world of much smarter devices … Unlike traditional chips that separate memory from processing circuits, the NorthPole chip combines the two—like synapses in the brain that hold and process information based on their connection to other neurons. Why is that important and what does it have to do with the future?

Amb. Friedman to Arutz Sheva: I’ve never seen the Jewish people this united
I was very proud of the President yesterday, who traveled 6,000 miles to really just, I think, give a hug to the Jewish people. I thought it was sincere, heartfelt. Israel’s position that Hamas must be ousted from Gaza is appropriate, US State Department Matthew Miller said on Thursday

Dear Jew Haters: Thank You for Uniting the Jews
Clearly, they were not marching to show empathy for the 1300 Jewish victims. Jew haters are so hypnotized by their hatred they’re incapable of seeing Jews as victims, even when Jewish babies are slaughtered in front of their parents, or Jewish families are burned alive, or Jewish partygoers are murdered, raped and mutilated. The upside is that I’ve never seen such a show of Jewish unity. The great majority of Jews have said “enough is enough.”

“Crush and conquer:” that’s the stated goal for a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip, and one Israeli minister says the I.D.F. (Israeli Defense Forces) has the green light to move ahead, with the timing reportedly in the hands of the military. On Thursday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Israeli troops on the Golan Heights. “I am here with Golani’s fighters, they come from all parts of the country. They fought like lions, they will fight like lions,” Netanyahu declared. “We are going to win with all our might. FEATURED ANALYSIS

Biden’s Bid for More Ukraine Money Falls Flat

In a prime-time address that conflated two very different wars, Joe Biden failed to make the case for another $60 billion for Ukraine.

Douglas Andrews

Fresh off his trip to Israel, during which he mixed up the dates for the Six Day War and the Yom Kippur War, and during which he suggested that Israel’s mortal enemy, Hamas, needed to learn “how to shoot straight,” Joe Biden took to the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office and proceeded to be … irresolute.

This was just the second such address from this president, which strikes us as a scathing indictment not only of his cognitive abilities but also his persuasive powers. In a speech that lasted just under 15 minutes, Joe Biden tried to make the case to the American people and to our elected representatives that we need to send yet another massive sum of money to Ukraine, with a couple of lesser sums thrown in for Israel and for securing our own border.

But, as the Washington Examiner reports, “Biden’s use of his bully pulpit may not make much of a difference as the House remains without a speaker and cannot pass the president’s $100 billion supplemental funding request.”

To be fair to the president, he exceeded our expectations — at least from a delivery standpoint. We don’t know what pharmaceuticals are being administered to Joe Biden to make him appear more lucid and more energetic during these rare occasions, but it’s clearly working. He didn’t mumble, and he didn’t stumble too much, and he invoked former Clinton Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s assessment of the United States as “the indispensable nation.” He also made a boilerplate claim that this moment was one “where the decisions we make today are going to determine the future for decades to come.”

But his speech largely fell flat because his handlers set an unrealistic expectation: that of commingling the increasingly unpopular Ukraine war with a new and far more visceral war between Israel and the murderous baby-killing cutthroats of Hamas. “Hamas and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin represent different threats,” Biden intoned, “but they share this in common: They both want to completely annihilate a neighboring democracy.” The president added: “American leadership is what holds the world together. … To put all that at risk if we walk away from Ukraine, if we turn our backs on Israel, is just not worth it.”

He also tried to make it sound like we’re only supporting Ukraine with weaponry. That’s a lie. As we noted recently, we’re also propping up Ukraine’s civil servants and its Department of Education.

He also weirdly attempted to cover himself in valor by humble-bragging about his trip to Ukraine last year and his trip to Israel earlier this week — something about his very brief presence in these two war zones apparently being worthy of our admiration.

Aside from the mistake of trying to conflate the two wars, Biden once again refused to take a strong stance against Iran. Indeed, he only mentioned the rogue regime twice during his speech. As former Trump CIA Director and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo noted: “His remarks struck the right tone … but sitting behind the Resolute Desk, you have to be resolute. And he was none of that. … He has done nothing to hold the Iranian regime accountable — literally nothing. Indeed, he’s done just the reverse of that.”

Referring to Biden’s failure to enforce sanctions on Iran and restrict that regime’s ability to profit from oil revenues, he said: “Iran now has $70 billion. When he took office, they had $6 billion.” Pompeo also rightly noted that the Iranians today are holding more American hostages than they did when Joe Biden gave them $6 billion in ransom on 9/11.

As to the Iranian proxy of Hamas, they murdered at least 30 Americans, and they still hold an unknown number of other Americans hostage. Biden’s specific outrage about these two facts was, frankly, missing in action.

Biden’s massive aid package calls for $105 billion altogether, with $60 billion for Ukraine and $14 billion for Israel. This shows us where his priorities are.

Biden also promised $100 million in aid to Hamas-controlled Gaza, about which Republican Senator Tom Cotton said, “Hamas is effectively the government of Gaza, and we’re not going to grant billions of dollars in aid that’s just going to be, in effect, resupply for terrorist groups.”

Cotton also posted this admonition: “There’ve been multiple attacks against Americans by Iran’s proxies in the last few days alone. Biden must immediately warn Iran that any attack by its proxies against Americans will be treated as a direct attack by Iran against the U.S. and will be met with massive retaliation.”

As Congressman Dan Crenshaw rightly noted on Fox News this morning:

If you want to prevent war, you have to be able to threaten it and threaten it credibly. And that takes statements that make people uncomfortable. President Trump did this all the time. He had an intuition for what deterrence actually was. President Biden whispering ‘Don’t do it, don’t do it’ into the microphone is not as effective. … Iran and Hezbollah are actively in the decision-making process about whether they will open up that multifront war [against Israel] … and that decision will be dependent on what they think will happen to them in return. If you want to prevent war, you have to make it very clear that you’re willing to beat the crap out of your enemies if they try something.“

Ohio Senator J.D. Vance wasn’t impressed by Biden’s speech either. As he noted last night: “Why is Joe Biden going on national television and selling people on a Ukrainian escalation, when Joe Biden is talking about the terrible tragedy in Israel? Whatever your views on Ukraine, it is a separate country and a separate problem. … I think what the president did is completely disgraceful. If he wants to sell the American people on $60 billion more to Ukraine, he shouldn’t use dead Israeli children to do it. It was disgusting.”

In his speech, Joe Biden encouraged us to “remember who we are.” But as our Mark Alexander quipped, “Biden has a hard enough time remembering who he is.”

Sidney Powell Cops a Plea

One of Donald Trump’s election lawyers took a plea deal that reveals a lot about the Georgia case.

Nate Jackson

We knew Sidney Powell was in trouble when Tucker Carlson demanded proof of the election fraud she alleged and she wouldn’t offer it.

That was on November 19, 2020. “We asked the Trump campaign attorney for proof of her bombshell claims,” Carlson said. “She gave us nothing.” A few days earlier, he had said in later-revealed text messages, “Sidney Powell is lying.”

Powell had made numerous appearances on Fox and elsewhere after the 2020 election, promising to “release the kraken” of evidence that the presidential election had been stolen — that Donald Trump had actually prevailed over Joe Biden.

Among other things, in Carlson’s words in 2020, “Powell has been all over conservative media with the following story: This election was stolen by a collection of international leftists who manipulated vote tabulating software in order to flip millions of votes from Donald Trump to Joe Biden.” According to Powell, the software “was designed to rig elections.”

Tucker wanted evidence because he, like millions more of us, was on Trump’s side and really didn’t want Biden to be president.

“I never say anything I can’t prove,” Powell insisted. But Carlson said, “She never sent us any evidence, despite a lot of polite requests.” In fact, “She got angry and told us to stop contacting her.”

A few days later, Team Trump separated from Powell. Carlson is also now gone from Fox, which also settled a massive defamation suit with Dominion Voting Systems over claims like Powell’s.

Powell still faces a defamation suit from Dominion. But she took a plea deal in Georgia yesterday, pleading guilty to six misdemeanor counts in exchange for six years of probation, $10,000 in restitution and fines, a public letter of apology to the citizens of Georgia, and truthful testimony in the trials of her co-defendants. She was one of 19 people, including Trump, indicted in the Peach State by overzealous partisan hack and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in August. Willis says Team Trump tried to overturn election results in Georgia, which Trump lost by fewer than 12,000 votes.

So, why did Powell cop a plea? Perhaps because she didn’t have much of a choice. Faced with seven felonies, Powell could have lost her law license and spent years behind bars for even one guilty verdict. She couldn’t risk that, even if it was unlikely Willis would be able to prove her case in court. Other than a charge for illegally accessing voting equipment in Coffee County, Powell’s guilty pleas weren’t for Willis’s charges — and notably not the RICO charge on which the whole thing hinges.

Legal analyst Margot Cleveland argues that “Willis basically extorted a guilty plea from Powell.” She explains, “That the Fulton County prosecutor settled for these misdemeanor charges when Powell faced seven major felony counts — including an expansive RICO conspiracy count — confirms the criminal justice system was weaponized to get Trump.”

The Wall Street Journal says Willis’s effort “to pit defendants against each other” is “a hallmark of racketeering, or RICO, cases.” Of course, it is preposterous that Willis is using RICO to criminalize a political campaign’s efforts through every legal avenue to win an election.

It’s so preposterous that the plea deal signals that Willis’s case “is a dud,” says former prosecutor Andrew McCarthy. “If these were serious prosecutions, we would not be seeing probation sentences,” he explains. “If Willis truly believed in her ballyhooed RICO charge … she’d induce her cooperators to plead guilty to the RICO charge and explain, in the plea allocution, what they did, particularly in conjunction with Donald Trump, that makes them guilty. Willis is not doing that.”

We’ve argued basically two things all along:

First, Trump and his team made outlandish claims they could never prove, thus missing the real threat to election integrity — bulk-mail ballots. Worse, they have undermined the credibility of any conservative who legitimately questions election processes, as the Leftmedia convinces Americans to lump all of it together under “election denial.”

Second, Trump’s election challenges were all via legal avenues, and Democrats have grossly overreached in their persecution of Trump and his cohorts. They’ve done so out of both Trump Derangement Syndrome and a desire to elevate him to become the GOP nominee again in 2024, believing they can beat him yet again. With four indictments on 91 counts so far, they are making a mockery of justice in the name of “saving democracy.”

Unfortunately, the Democrats’ clown show still presents a real problem for Republicans in future election cycles.

Executive News Summary

The House GOP future, White House doxxes U.S. troops, El Paso the illegal immigration buck, and more.

Nate Jackson & Jordan Candler

Cross-Examination

  • Jordan’s third try and the House GOP future: House Republicans continue to fight over their next speaker after Kevin McCarthy’s unceremonious ouster three weeks ago. Ohio’s Jim Jordan is getting a third vote today after at one point saying he’d simply back off and throw his support behind expanding the powers of Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry through January. Republicans failed to agree to that, however, and McHenry threatened to resign a job he never wanted. Just before we went to press, McCarthy officially nominated Jordan for this third vote. It remains to be seen whether Republicans can set aside their differences and move on, but observers expect Jordan to fall short yet again, perhaps even losing more GOP votes.
  • Idiotic White House doxxes U.S. troops: “The White House took serious heat on social media Thursday for posting an image of President Biden meeting with U.S. troops in Israel without obscuring their identities,” reports Fox News. Whatever intern runs that account deleted the photo later, and the White House put out a statement saying, “We regret the error and any issues this may have caused.” Those issues include potentially compromising the identities of soldiers in harm’s way. It was clearly part of the full-court press to make Biden appear like a strong leader, but as with most of those efforts it only backfires.
  • Disinformation reporter’s disinformation: The American Leftmedia took Hamas propaganda about that hospital explosion hook, line, and sinker. That included reporters who are supposed to specialize in coverage of disinformation. NBC News reporter Ben Collins is part of that leftist Praetorian Guard known as the “fact-checkers.” But the 2023 Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism winner didn’t correct that disinformation; he propagated it. As Reason’s Robby Soave put it, “There’s something extra galling about journalistic errors when they are perpetrated by someone who holds himself out as especially talented at identifying lies.”
  • Americans trust the media less than ever: In a story totally unrelated to the one above, the latest Gallup poll reveals that Americans’ trust in the media has matched the record low recorded in 2016. “In general, how much trust and confidence do you have in the mass media?” Gallup asked. A record high 39% responded, “None at all.” That number should be far higher, given the obvious Democrat propaganda peddled by most of the mainstream media. Just 11% of Republicans trust the media, but even Democrat trust fell 12 points to 58% over the last year. On the other hand, we suppose the real news here is that 32% of Americans still trust the media “a great deal” or “a fair amount.” Someone reach over and slap those people.
  • El Paso the illegal immigration buck: El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser is in the thick of Joe Biden’s intentional invasion at the southern border. His city sits right across the border from Juarez, Mexico, one of the most violent cities in the world. And Leeser is fed up. So much so that in the last month he’s sent 178 busloads of more than 7,700 illegal aliens to sanctuary cities like Chicago, Denver, and New York. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has bused more than 58,000 illegals to sanctuary cities in recent months. Democrats caterwaul about Abbott’s move, but they’re strangely silent about Leeser’s. The reason is obvious: Abbott is a Republican and Leeser is a Democrat. Regardless, we say keep it up. The best way to bring a solution to this crisis is to make sanctimonious leftists in non-border enclaves have to deal with the consequences of their own terrible policies.

Moratorium on Hiring Hamas-Supporting Law Students

Is this another example of cancel culture, just in reverse, or is it something different?

Emmy Griffin

In the wake of the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks against innocent Israeli civilians, several student groups including at Ivy League schools protested or signed letters of support for the jihadi murderers. At Harvard, 31 student groups demonstrated solidarity with Hamas and refused to make a distinction between the terrorists and the residents of the Gaza Strip, further fanning the conversation on moral equivalence.

Though there were students who masked up or otherwise hid their identities and pro-terrorism sentiments, there were those who happily bared their ideological allegiance. Among these were three recent Ivy League grads from Harvard and Columbia. The price for their outright Jew hatred was losing valuable job offers at an elite law firm, Davis Polk.

Moral Equivalence vs. Actual Morality

In the case of law firms, it is important to a future employer that law students have some sort of moral grounding in order to correctly and efficiently uphold the law. The moral equivalence that these student groups at universities are citing is that Israel is an “apartheid state” that condemns non-Jewish citizens to second-class status. They are merely reciting propaganda that their woke professors have told them or that their Middle Eastern friends have pushed. And it’s false.

They have been told that the Palestinians are oppressed and that groups like Hamas are decolonizers, or “freedom fighters,” ergo they have every right to go in and kill Israelis for the freedom they seek. Hamas, Hezbollah, and their backers like Iran use this feeble-minded reasoning to justify what their actual goal is: Jewish genocide and ultimately the destruction of the West. The latter is also the goal of many of these students’ “enlightened” professors, so it’s no surprise that these students’ brains are filled with moral equivalency garbage to justify mass murder. In their minds, Israel shouldn’t be there; it took over already occupied land, therefore the Arabs in the vicinity should push them out.

These students mostly have no clue what the actual history of the region is — that, or they are believing lies. Sadly, they have to believe the lies in order to justify the violence or swallow the morally dubious idea that the violence is cyclical — an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth…

Cancel Culture or Freedom of Association?

All of this leads to the pertinent question: Are the actions of law firms like Davis Polk cancel culture and therefore something we shouldn’t support?

No.

Cancel culture is a largely left-wing phenomenon that advocates for the bullying and silencing of people who disagree with their worldview. Thanks to emotionally incontinent tirades, the cancel culture mob has gotten people fired and kicked off of social media. They force their victims to recant and apologize, and until they do, the victims are hounded by harpy-like activists who range in bullying tactics from scolds to threateners. Cancel culture advocates’ main purview is to silence and intimidate.

Choosing not to hire someone because their values are diametrically opposed to the values of the company is entirely different. A company doesn’t violate the free speech rights of job applicants like cancel culture does. On the contrary, a company wants to know what prospects think and how they conduct themselves in order to see if their values and morality are a good match for the company.

These students signed letters that said the genocidal attack on Israel was justified and that Hamas should be applauded. In a very real sense, they endorsed the same ideology that Hitler and the Nazis embraced — and at least for now, people can still clearly call that ideology unequivocally evil.

These students might be under the illusion that there is a difference between iradicating the so-called Zionist oppressors in Israel and the Jew hatred of the Nazis. But there’s not. As The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro correctly states, “Anti-Zionism is an incredibly shallow cover story for Jew-hatred — and because it is a cover story, it’s easier to proclaim your support publicly.” Davis Polk, by rescinding the job offers, is saying it doesn’t want anti-Semitic employees.

The law firm has the freedom to choose whom it wants to associate with, just as these students have every right to say what they think. That doesn’t mean these students’ words, ideas, and actions won’t have consequences.

Steven Davidoff Solomon, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, discussed in The Wall Street Journal another firm that took similar actions as Davis Polk. Solomon implored: “Legal employers in the recruiting process should do what Winston & Strawn did: treat these law students like the adults they are. If a student endorses hate, dehumanization or anti-Semitism, don’t hire him. When students face consequences for their actions, they straighten up. … If a student endorses hatred, it isn’t only your right but your duty not to hire him. Do you want your clients represented by someone who condones these monstrous crimes?”

At the end of the day, discriminatory hiring (in the best sense of the word here) allows for freedom of speech and association to flourish, as both maintain their integrity in public life.

It is excellent to see law firms choosing employees who are going to be advocates for their clients and not be blinded by university-induced prejudice. Perhaps these woke baby college activists will wake up as a result.

There Are No Sidelines Between Good and Evil

The Left, because of their views on power, cannot recognize evil when they view it.

Erick Erickson

The world is witnessing horror in the Middle East. For many, truth is far less important than narrative. That narrative, too often, is that the Israelis are white European colonizers, and they are bad. Critical theory has rotted the minds of many and postmodern Marxist ideas, embraced by left-wing groups globally, have led many to evil’s side.

Over a week ago, Hamas terrorists sneaked into Israel, some on paragliders. They killed infants, toddlers, teens, men, women, the elderly and Holocaust survivors. Hamas livestreamed their terror. Israel showed the world the pictures and videos of the terror. But many people simply denied the terror happened. It was remarkable watching progressive members of Congress refuse to acknowledge the terror. It was more remarkable to see how many antisemites came out of the shadows to cheer on the murders of Israelis while denying the murders even happened.

One got the sense that many of Hamas’ cheerleaders who openly questioned if babies had actually been decapitated would be totally fine with 40 dead babies so long as they still had heads. Many antisemites have taken to denying the babies were decapitated, claiming the story was debunked. The story was not debunked. In fact, reporters and military officials have all come forward as eyewitnesses to say they saw it for themselves. But, even if the babies had their heads, they were still murdered.

The same people who refused to believe Hamas engaged in such ghoulish behavior, despite photographs, immediately believed Israel blew up the Baptist Hospital in Gaza. A Los Angeles Times investigative reporter who claimed the babies were not decapitated unless Israel could prove it to be true actually insisted Israel had to have blown up the hospital and would have to prove it was not true.

It turns out Israel did not blow up the hospital. Reporters who waited days to accept Israel’s claims of Hamas horror rushed out to claim immediately that Israel had bombed the hospital because Hamas said so. Remarkably, Israel still is unsure how many of its citizens have been taken as hostages, but Hamas insisted within minutes of the hospital explosion that 500 were dead and the Jews were to blame.

Five hundred did not die. Israel did not launch the missile at the hospital. But the Arab world rioted because the press believed the terrorists. Those who lectured Republicans about disinformation and misinformation were happy to spread it. The lesson is that for the media to believe your lies, you must not be former President Donald Trump or a COVID-19 skeptic. Instead, kill a few Jews and the press will regurgitate your lies for you.

The people who embraced Hamas’s lies and could not bring themselves to believe the truth of Hamas’s monstrosity in Israel are also the same people who immediately wanted a ceasefire. Their rules, like Calvinball, change to suit them. Hamas kills Israelis. Israel prepares a response. The accomplices of evil demand a time out on the field.

Hamas and its cheerleaders are on the side of killing babies and burning Israelis alive. Those who deny the atrocities or claim no evidence of what Hamas livestreamed for the world to see are neither dumb nor ignorant. They are evil. Monsters are rearing their heads, marching in streets, and living by lies and denials.

Postmodern Marxist theorists view the whole world through power dynamics. There are two classes: the oppressor and the oppressed. Because most Israelis are lighter-skinned and many Israeli families once lived in Europe, the postmodernists view them as colonizers and, therefore, oppressors. The Palestinians are viewed as oppressed people who have been colonized. Therefore, much of the progressive West gives moral credibility to Palestinians, including Hamas, while imputing moral culpability to the Israelis.

The Left, because of their views on power, cannot recognize evil when they view it. An evil that challenges their narratives must be ignored. The rest of us should see the evil for what it is and see those who deny it or are silent against it as the accomplices of that evil. There are no sidelines in a fight between good and evil, and no amount of rationalizing will change that.

This Just In: Animals Are Not Models for Humans

New research finds homosexual behavior in nature, which is supposed to be proof that it’s okay for people to do it.

Samantha Koch

The pride movement endlessly attempts to convince the public that same-sex behavior and relationships are just as much a part of our nature as heterosexual attractions and behaviors. One of those arguments is to point to the interactions between various species in the animal kingdom and insist that if it’s happening in the wild, then it must be productive and beneficial to accept it everywhere.

A recent New York Times article examined a research paper published in the journal Nature. That paper was written by Jose Maria Gomez, a member of the research unit in the Department of Functional and Evolutionary Ecology at the University of Granada, and its title says a lot: “The Evolution of Same-Sex Sexual Behavior in Mammals.” Basically, researchers asserted that behaviors of a more intimate nature are not uncommon between male and male or female and female in several different species, particularly in mammals, but also in reptiles and amphibians.

Despite the insistence from the current crop of LGBTQ activists — as they’ve taken the existence of alternative sexual identities to a new level through their obsession with gender labels and nonsensical pronouns — this paper only seems to further solidify the fact that sexual behaviors outside of the male-female tradition still only manifest in a very small minority, whether humans or animals. According to the Times, “The researchers ended up with a list of 261 species, or about 4 percent of all mammalian species, that exhibited these same-sex behaviors.”

It’s also necessary to take into consideration the reasons for these type of interactions in the context of a pride of lions or den of snakes.

In this study, there were very clear factors that suggest why two male animals might snuggle up to each other, or why female animals might spend more time with each other than their male counterparts.

Survival.

As The Washington Post’s coverage notes, the paper includes a bit about “male garter snakes using pheromones to attract other males when it’s cold, causing other males in the area to come form a ‘mating ball’ — which can help them all survive through the night.”

Reducing conflict.

Christine Wilkinson of the University of California at Berkeley pointed to this paper to explain some of the interactions we might witness between male lions: “You have African lion males that travel together and help each other to survive,” she said. “They’re also mounting each other and sort of bonding in more physical ways because they need each other.”

Social connections.

“We found that the prevalence of same-sex sexual behavior in mammals is associated with sociality,” the paper says. “And the directional test of trait evolution suggests that this covariance probably occurs because the evolution of same-sex sexual behavior in both males and females has been contingent on shifts from solitary living to sociality.”

Essentially, it’s how they make friends and establish trust.

If anything, papers such as this offer a strong case as to why we should not be looking to the practices of undomesticated creatures for our rationale to promote certain behaviors as human beings.

We tend to discourage resorting to sexual advances in order to work through challenges with friends or colleagues or to resolve disputes in the office, as doing so would likely result in legal repercussions.

Outside of a bar on a Friday night, we do not rely on provocative behavior to strike up a conversation with another person or as a method of inviting new friends into our social circles. And it is generally frowned upon to use “survival” as an excuse to enter someone’s personal space uninvited, same sex or otherwise.

There are countless acts that occur in the wild that can be easily equated to the need to keep other animal friends warm in the cold months, to mark territory, or to ensure the greatest likelihood of survival for the whole tribe — none of which makes a strong case to suggest that the relentless demands of today’s LGBTQ activist movement are necessary.

There are no daily lion pride meetings about inclusivity or convincing the lionesses to hold off on their development, in case they were truly meant to lead instead of breed. There are no lions forcing their cubs to celebrate the connection between their male members. In fact, a male lion that takes over a pride will often kill the young that are not his. Clearly, humans shouldn’t emulate that behavior.

In a pride of lions, there is no confusion about each member’s responsibilities, and their roles within the group almost exclusively rely on their biological sex.

If we were to look at the bigger picture — and not just cherry-pick the behaviors that work to affirm a particular viewpoint of the minority — we would largely agree that most of the practices that make sense in a herd or pack of wild animals are clearly not fit to maintain a civilized society of human beings.

Dangerous Cities: Size Doesn’t Matter

Thanks to soft-on-crime Democrat policies, not even smaller towns are immune from the scourge of crime.

Brian Mark Weber

From Los Angeles to Chicago to New York, crime is out of control across America. Large groups of teens loot stores, gunfire erupts in neighborhoods, and innocent people fear going outside after dark.

But it’s not only big cities that are plagued by crime. A study released by WalletHub found that three of the five least-safe cities in the U.S. were Baton Rouge, Fort Lauderdale, and San Bernardino.

Not long ago, we could count on local governments and their police to tackle this problem. But these days, it’s the police who are under fire — not only by criminals but also by leftist politicians who demonize them. It’s hard to believe there are people in power who want more crime, but that’s how power corrupts certain public servants.

While some portray the issue of crime as complex, it’s really quite simple: Democrats enable crime and demoralize police, which results in more crime, which in turn demoralizes police. It’s no wonder cities struggle to recruit cops.

One city finding it hard to bring in new police recruits is Washington, DC. As the Washington Examiner reports, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser admitted that the city had lost hundreds of officers in recent years and is finding it hard to get new applicants, even though the city is promising “a $20,000 signing bonus, a housing stipend, and tuition reimbursement.”

As for why crime is rampant, there are plenty of excuses to go around. Shannon Dicus, San Bernardino’s Sheriff-coroner, doesn’t mince words explaining why criminals in the city have the upper hand. As he writes in an op-ed, it’s difficult to make arrests because Proposition 57 “reclassified several violent crimes as nonviolent.” Dicus explains that “heinous acts such as human trafficking, domestic violence, and rape of the unconscious person … are no longer considered violent crimes under California statutes.” When cops can’t get criminals off the streets for those things, he adds, “it’s no wonder we see the issues of violent crime spiking and increased homelessness in our communities.”

These are very real consequences. As columnist Michael Letts appropriately reminds us: “With funding dried out, several thousand police officers either retired from duty or simply decided to leave while the getting was good. A few in Chicago even committed suicide, tired of the combination of long-running hours and the lack of true support from its own government. And this year, it’s reached even more critical levels, resulting in crime rising to all-new heights across several states — including high-profile areas like Portland, Seattle, San Francisco and New York.”

Letts adds, “The idea of being a police officer has reached such a critical level that no one wants to do it — not with the combination of harassment, low morale, disrespect from local government officials, and not having the proper funding to even make a proper living.”

Of course, we need only to look back to George Floyd to see where all the anti-cop rhetoric really heated up. Democrats decided that the police, not the criminals, were the problem, and that the best way to prevent another Floyd incident was to defund the police.

There have been countless riots, thefts, violent attacks, and murders since Floyd’s death. And many of them could have been prevented had there been enough cops on the streets. None of the dead will be remembered or honored for giving up their lives as a result of Joe Biden’s anti-police executive orders, yet last weekend Biden honored Floyd’s 50th birthday in a statement while calling for even more police “reform.”

As our Nate Jackson writes: “What did the Democrats’ version of police ‘reform’ often look like? It meant defunding police departments around the country. It meant vilifying police and suppressing morale to the point that officers left departments in droves while recruiting plummeted.”

We all know why Democrats want fewer police and more crime. Under those conditions, they can make promises to fix the very problem they created, knowing that low-information voters will likely return them to office.

Meanwhile, the rest of us can only hope that high crime doesn’t visit our own neighborhoods — and that the citizenry will finally wake up and vote for a restoration of law and order.

“You’re been targeted, you’re being gaslit, some people are losing their jobs, folks are getting events canceled — literally their First Amendment right wiped away for standing up and saying that children deserve to live. It is … literally inhumane for my colleagues to allow that to continue and say nothing.” —Rashida Tlaib

Theater of the Absurd

“You can’t have the attack that happened to Israel by a terrorist group like Hamas. At the same time, you can’t have the over-response, the collective punishment that’s coming out of Israel back to the citizenry, the Palestinians in Gaza, who are clearly not Hamas.” —Congressman Mark Pocan (D-WI)

For the Record

“Hitler may not have represented all the German people. Mao Zedong may not have represented all the Chinese people. Josef Stalin may not have represented all the Russian people. Idi Amin may not have represented all the Ugandan people. And so on. Evil doesn’t need a majority to inflict death and mayhem, though a majority can oppose and defeat it if they have the will.” —Cal Thomas

“If anyone wants to see a preview of what a Palestinian state would look like, they should consider Gaza. Only the self-deluded believe such a state would not be used by terrorists to complete the ‘final solution’ of wiping Israel off the map. … As long as U.S. policy includes support for a Palestinian state there will likely be additional cycles of violence. The Palestinian National Authority should be told that given what Hamas has done, that scenario is no longer possible.” —Cal Thomas

Sad, but True

“If Republicans … spent as much time fighting Democrats as they did stabbing their own voters in the back, the battle for America’s soul would look more like a fight between two rivals than the one-sided shellacking Democrats are dolling out on a weekly basis.” —Shawn Fleetwood

Biden Ripped for Trying to Sell ‘Disastrous Ukraine Policy to Skeptical Americans’

US President Joe Biden’s speech to the nation on Thursday night, vowing to send an emergency budget request to Congress to secure funding for Israel and Ukraine and dubbing assistance funneled to Kiev as a “smart investment,” rankled with those US lawmakers who have long opposed using taxpayers’ cash to bankroll the proxy war against Russia.

The US debt mountain is growing so fast the government could soon be spending more on interest payments than on defense | Business Insider

  • The US’s mountain of debt has become a cause of concern for investors this year.
  • The government is likely to spend more on interest payments than on defense over the next five years, per Capital Group.
  • The ballooning debt burden could eventually chip away at the demand for Treasury bonds, according to the investment manager.

The US’s mountain of debt is growing every day – and the government could soon be spending more on interest payments than on defense, according to Capital Group.

“US debt dynamics are evolving in a way that requires attention,” Darrell Spence, an economist for the US asset manager, said in a research note last week. “Over the next five years, net interest payments on the debt are expected to surpass defense spending.”

Spence added that if the world’s largest economy’s debt pile rises at the rate expected by the Congressional Budget Office, the government’s spending on net interest payments could rise from under $500 billion to a staggering $1.4 trillion by 2033.

The idea that interest payments could soon surpass defense spending could be a source of concern for policymakers, with President Joe Biden pledging Monday to ask Congress for over $100 billion worth of funding to support both Israel and Ukraine.

Debt has emerged as a major concern for Wall Street this year, with lawmakers reaching an 11th-hour deal to raise the government borrowing limit back in May and Treasury bonds currently suffering a rout that ranks amongst the worst sell-offs in market history.

The US government’s liabilities breached an eye-watering $33 trillion on September 18 — a month later, the figure had jumped $33.64 trillion, implying an average daily increase of $20 billion.

America‘s borrowings be approaching levels that could cause economic distress, according to Spence.

Typically, a country’s debt levels become a problem if it “had interest rates that were higher than its economic growth rate, the incremental revenue generated by the economy each year became smaller than the interest payments on the debt, and the debt began to grow all by itself,” he wrote.

“The US had been far from reaching that threshold. Until now,” he added.

Spence warned that the ballooning debt pile could force the government to raise taxes, fuel further bond sell-offs, and force the Federal Reserve to lock in higher interest rates.

“Slower economic growth also could be expected, given that government spending would need to be re-routed to debt service,” he added. “For investors, this could lead to lower stock market returns over time, given the strong long-term correlation between GDP growth and market returns.”

WORLDVIEW: Postmodernism (Part 3) | VCY

Welcome to Apologetics with Carl Kerby.

Today, we’re talking about worldviews. Postmodernism is the dominant worldview in our secular culture, and there’s great danger in that. After all, if there’s no basis for right and wrong, as postmodernism claims, then whose ideas will dominate?

Well, as apologist Charles Colson said:

In our postmodernist age … if there is no truth, then we cannot persuade one another by rational arguments. All that’s left is sheer power.

That’s right – if the culture is hostile to truth, there’s nothing left but one group forcing its views on another, and that’s exactly what we’ve seen with recent violent rioting in American cities. It is the result of “people doing what is right in their own eyes,” as in the book of Judges.

In contrast, the Christian worldview proclaims truth through divine revelation (i.e. the Bible), as well as through evidence and reason. But if a postmodern society rejects these, chaos ensues.

Postmodernism inevitably results in pluralism, but we’ll discuss that another time. For more information, go to http://www.hopetools.net.  Stay bold!

Is the conflict in Israel a sign of the end times? | Denison Forum.

As the war in Israel continues and more of the surrounding Muslim-majority nations indicate they might escalate the situation further, one of the questions we have been asked most frequently at Denison Forum is if the fighting there is a sign of the end times.

It’s an understandable question and, from an eschatological perspective, “wars and rumors of wars” in Israel do feel different than the ongoing struggle in Ukraine or conflicts elsewhere in the world (Matthew 24:6).

But why is that the case? And why do so many Christians in particular seem to jump so quickly to the end times when conflicts in Israel arise?

While answers vary, one of the most prominent factors among evangelical Christians is the belief that the nation of Israel will play a central role in the apocalyptic conflicts that will ultimately result in Christ’s return.

Now, it must be said from the start that not all Christians agree with that assessment. As Dr. Jim Denison describes, there are seven primary approaches that people have taken to understanding the book of Revelation and, by extension, how the end times will play out. And people continue to argue about it because no approach is inarguably more biblical than the rest—though strong adherents to any one of them might disagree.

For our purposes today, however, one approach in particular stands out.

Today’s most popular end-times theology

Of the seven ways that Christians have historically viewed end-times theology, the most popular in evangelical circles today is premillennialism.

While a variety of perspectives are housed within that term, they share the basic belief that the world will never be made right until Christ returns. And a quick look at the news on any given day offers a helpful reminder of why that perspective makes sense to so many.

However, that wasn’t always the case.

In the wake of the Second Great Awakening, many Christians in the West believed that the church was on the path to ushering in the kingdom that Christ would one day return to rule. However, for many believers, the Civil War put cracks in that belief before the first World War ultimately shattered it.

In its wake, more and more Christians began to believe that Jesus was the only one who could fix this world, and the premillennial approach became more common as a result.

In typical Christian fashion, though, even when people agreed on the basics, the details proved divisive. And of the factions within that faction of belief, dispensationalism is the most important for understanding why Israel is so important to many Christians today.

God’s two plans?

Dispensationalism came to America through the writings and sermons of British pastor John Nelson Darby during the late 1800s, but it rose to prominence through the preaching of St. Louis pastor James Brookes and—to an extent—famed evangelist D. L. Moody. Then, in 1909, Cyrus Scofield published one of the first study Bibles and included notes throughout explaining how the various parts of Scripture fit within a dispensationalist model.

A host of Bible colleges, institutes, and seminaries—with Dallas Theological Seminary perhaps the most important—then trained generations of pastors to see Scripture through that lens as well. And while other forms of evangelicalism grew to prominence across the same period of time, some of the most influential leaders within the evangelical church have approached Scripture from the dispensationalist perspective.

I bring all of this up today because one of the most distinctive convictions within dispensationalism is the belief that, as Timothy Weber describes, “God had two completely different plans operating in history: one for an earthly people, Israel, and the other for a heavenly people, the church.”

And that plan would eventually culminate with a reestablished Israel at the center of the Lord’s work as he began to usher in his kingdom. Given that Darby began preaching about that eventuality nearly a century before the nation of Israel was rebirthed in 1949, it’s understandable that the latter event was seen by many to confirm the dispensationalist perspective on Israel’s role in the end times.

As Israel has continued to court evangelical support in the decades since, that relationship has only grown stronger, and a view that found its modern origins within the dispensationalist perspective has been adopted by many who hold to a different approach to the faith as well.

As a result, now when Israel goes to war, Christians pay attention and openly wonder if this conflict will kick off Scripture’s final conflict.

So how can we know?

Will you be ready?

Ultimately, the answer to that question is that we won’t know which conflict is the final conflict until Jesus comes back. We’ve been in the “last times” since Christ’s incarnation. For the better part of two millennia, there have been Christians who were convinced that his return was imminent.

I’m thirty-seven years old and, not to brag, but the latest conflict in Israel is about the fifth end of the world I’ve experienced so far. Yet, whether it’s the other wars in the Middle East, 9/11, Covid, or the host of other global conflicts and persecutions that meet many of the criteria described in Scripture, Christ still hasn’t returned.

But one day he will, and while we can continue to debate the degree to which present events should be seen as a sign of the end times, what Jesus was absolutely clear about is that the best way to live now is to be ready for his return.

So how can we do that?

Think back for a moment to your initial response when you thought about the question of if we are now living in the end times. Did it make you frightened? Excited? Skeptical? Did someone come to mind who doesn’t know Christ? If Christ did return today, would there be something you feel like you’d left unfinished?

Ultimately, Christ’s call is to live every day with the expectation that it might be your last, coupled with the reality that we often won’t know if it is until it’s too late to do much about it.

So what would such a life look like for you today? And is your answer to that question primarily the product of your own guesses and expectations or as a result of guidance from God?

Only the Lord knows when your last day will be, so he is the only one capable of helping you live well every day until that time comes.

Have you asked for his help yet today?
