Your Primary Calling: Faithfulness

“They have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.”

3 John 1:7-8

About 10 to 15 miles off the coast of France lies a cluster of landmasses called the Channel Islands. In 1940, Germany invaded and occupied them. Among the tunnels the Germans built on one of them, Jersey, there is a plaque that details the generous labor of a few women from the occupied island who bravely sent mittens, socks, flying helmets, sweaters, and more to the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force. Because of their generosity, as some brave airmen flew against the German airplanes to resist Nazi Germany’s attempt to take over Europe, they were warmed by the products of those women’s compassion.

You might ask, What’s the big deal? These women were just knitting. But try telling that to an airman who had to brave freezing temperatures in the heat of battle! For him, there was nothing insignificant about socks and mittens. Those women from Jersey made a significant contribution to the Allied war effort by meeting a serious need. In this sense, without ever flying a plane, they were “fellow workers” with the RAF airmen.

The New Testament speaks over and over again of believers laboring alongside each other as “fellow workers.” In Philippians 2:25, Paul even speaks of Epaphroditus as his “fellow soldier.” The apostle Paul was arguably the most capable missionary and church planter who ever lived—and yet he could not have successfully completed anything without such “fellow workers for the truth,” as John calls them.

Every single one of us in the body of Christ has an important function. In wartime terms, some of us are pilots, others of us are mechanics, and some are knitters—and still others of us may be the sheep farmers who provide the wool! Perhaps society would have us grade these contributions, creating a hierarchy of sorts. Perhaps you are tempted to think that your contributions are insignificant. But this is not how things work in the economy of God. As Paul wrote, “The parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor” (1 Corinthians 12:22-23).

God chooses whom He will to fulfill each function in His body—and what matters to Him most is that we are faithful wherever He has placed us. Stay faithful, and the Lord will strengthen you for whatever role He’s calling you to—whether knitting or flying—for the glory of Christ. Do what you can, for what you can do He will use.

GTY Blog Post – Humility and Active Love

The contrast between Jesus and Judas is striking. Set against the backdrop of Judas’s hatred, Jesus’ love shines even brighter. We can have a better sense of the magnitude of Christ’s love when we understand that in the heart of Judas was the blackest kind of hatred and rejection. The very same words of love by which Jesus gradually drew the hearts of the other disciples to Himself only pushed Judas further and further away.

Always Growing | VCY

Thou shalt see greater than these.John 1:50

This is spoken to a childlike believer, who was ready to accept Jesus as the Son of God, the King of Israel, upon one convincing piece of argument. Those who are willing to see shall see; it is because we shut our eyes that we become so sadly blind.

We have seen much already. Great things and unsearchable has the Lord showed unto us, for which we praise His name; but there are greater truths in His Word, greater depths of experience, greater heights of fellowship, greater works of usefulness, greater discoveries of power, and love, and wisdom. These we are yet to see if we are willing to believe our Lord. The faculty of inventing false doctrine is ruinous, but power to see the truth is a blessing. Heaven shall be opened to us, the way thither shall be made clear to us in the Son of Man, and the angelic commerce which goes on between the upper and the lower kingdoms shall be made more manifest to us. Let us keep our eyes open toward spiritual objects and expect to see more and more. Let us believe that our lives will not drivel down into nothing but that we shall be always on the growing hand, seeing greater and still greater things, till we behold the great God Himself and never again lose the sight of Him.

Christ’s Attitude Toward Ex-Christians – Pastor Patrick Hines Podcast

Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27 Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, to see if he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who are watching it will begin to ridicule him, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build, and was not able to finish!’ 31 Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to face the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 Otherwise, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and requests terms of peace. 33 So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.

34 “Therefore, salt is good; but if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned? 35 It is useless either for the soil or the manure pile, so it is thrown out. The one who has ears to hear, let him hear.” NASB

From church website:

We subscribe to the Westminster Standards as our doctrinal statement. It consists of the following documents:

The Westminster Confession of Faith
The Westminster Larger Catechism
The Westminster Shorter Catechism

We also believe that Christian Worship is to be regulated and defined by God’s Word, the Bible.

Our worship services are designed to please and honor the Triune God of the Bible. We place Scripture reading and the preaching of the word of God at the center of worship along with Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. These are God’s gifts to His church and ought to always be at the center of Christian worship. We are a congregation that loves to sing God’s praises, recite His Word back to Him, and actively engage in hearing and learning from God’s Word.

We embrace and promote a comprehensive Christian world and life view.

There is no area of life which is not under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It is to God and His law which all people, including governments and civil rulers, will answer. The Word of God embraces and informs the way we view marriage, the family, children, education, politics, worship, law, government, war, the church, missions, evangelism, and worship. In the world today there is a battle of opposing worldviews. There are basically only two positions: God’s Word and man’s ideas. We stand positively for Biblical truth and negatively against man’s ideas which are opposed to Biblical truth.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only hope for mankind.

Because all men fall short of obeying God’s law, all men everywhere are in need of divine grace and salvation from God. This salvation is found only in the Lord Jesus Christ who died for sinners, was buried, rose again, and is alive today seated at God the Father’s right hand.

We Worship God Together as Families.

We offer nursery during morning worship service for newborns and infants but encourage people to keep as many of their children as they can with them for morning worship. The audio of the service is in the nursery via speakers. There is also a crying room with a video screen and audio of the sermon. We offer Sunday school classes for all ages but worship together as families. We do not offer “children’s” church. Children need to be in morning worship as soon as possible so they can learn how to participate as active worshipers of God which includes the singing of His praises and listening actively to sermons.

What is Fear of the Lord…? | Daily Thoughts about God.

I read the daily scripture this morning and I came across this:

Psalm 103:13 (ESV)  “As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear Him.

Immediately my eyes and thoughts were drawn to the words “those who fear Him”. My mind raced around this concept as I thought about how I don’t so much fear my God as I revere Him. Our relationship is one of intimate love, one of a Father and a son. Can there be true fear in such an intimate relationship?

So I opened up the textbooks and began to study, and this is what I found. According to the Strong’s Concordance and Dictionary the Hebrew word for fear…does not just mean fear. In fact it is more commonly used to mean reverence. We see the Hebrew word is pronounced yaw-ray’ used in many scriptures of the Old Testament. In a perfect example of where yaw-ray’ does not mean actual fear, yet reverence; we see a scripture quoted by Jesus from the Old Testament. In quoting this scripture, Jesus does not use the same words as we have translated it to mean; in fact, He brings a whole different light to it. This scripture is:

Deuteronomy 6:13 (ESV)  “It is the LORD your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear.”

And we see Jesus quoting it in:   Luke 4:8 (ESV)

“And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’ ”

We should worship, and reverently love our Lord our God, for only Him should we serve. If we fear our Lord our God, how can we reverently love on Him? How can we surrender completely to be in Christ and let Him abide in us if we have some form of fear? Yes I know, there is such a thing as healthy fear…and its called reverence, respect, love…not fear. When we talk about or put in our minds the word fear, we open a door or a footstool for the enemy. We then allow him to twist Fathers Words around; something he is very good at doing, and has been doing since the beginning of time.

There are other places in the Old Testament where this translation error stands true as well. The King James translators chose to translate the Hebrew Word mowra as fear, although it also means reverence, object of reverence, or an awe inspiring spectacle or deed. Another Hebrew word guwr, which can mean fear, but which also, means to stir up, sojourn, dwell with, remain, and dwell in or to stand in awe.

Father, let us worship you in our lives today, not fear you…

let us come to you my God, my Savior, and seek a deep and intimate loving relationship with you; not one of where I am afraid and see you as one who cannot be reached or one who is unobtainable. Father, let us remember your word, and plant it deep in our hearts…

Revelation 3:20 (ESV) “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”

1 John 4:18-19 (ESV) “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us.

Ephesians 3:17-19 (ESV) “so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

The cancel culture has been around for many years. John Stossel gives a new perspective to it in his interview with 23-year-old Rikki Schlott. She is the co-author of the new book, The Cancelling of the American Mind. If the title sounds familiar, it should. Her co-author was the co-author of the earlier book, The Coddling of the American Mind.

As a college student, she felt she had to hide her conservative views. She says she was even “afraid to have Thomas Sowell and Jordan Peterson books on my bookshelf.” She rightly feared that if her classmates saw the books she might be “verbally attacked on social media.”

John Stossel reminds us of the long list of people who have been canceled. “A teacher in Virginia lost his job for calling a transgender student she. An art history lecturer lost her job simply for showing a painting of Muhammad. A University of Virginia med student was banished from campus for merely questioning the importance of microaggressions.”

Generally, the younger you are the more likely you are to have a positive view towards cancel culture. But there is an interesting exception. Generation Z reverses that trend. Rikki Schlott has an explanation. “That’s because if you’re a young person who grows up in a graceless society, you’re always looking behind your back. You see friends torn down on social media.”

Also, many universities encourage students to report other students. She says that when she went to college to pick up her ID card, she found emergency numbers on the back. One number was for the bias response hotline in case you were offended. The university sanctioned the idea of reporting other students.

It’s time to speak up and end the assault on free speech achieved through the cancel culture.

VIDEO: The Time Clock: Jesus, the Jews, Jerusalem

Jan Markell hosts Pastor Mark Henry and Mondo Gonzales. The Jews and Jerusalem are ground zero for understanding our times and God’s plan for the end of the Church Age.  Yet many hold to theologies that do not allow them to comprehend this. The three sort through some false theologies that twist scripture.

Jesus Is the Only Way to Heaven Because God Is the Only Way to God | Cold Case Christianity

This Easter I had a wonderful experience at New Life Church near Toronto, Ontario. Pastor Elio and Micki Marrocco allowed me to teach their Good Friday and Easter services (in addition to training sessions with their core leaders). I tried to encourage the members of New Life and help them grow in their confidence related to the controversially exclusive, central claim of Christianity: Jesus alone is God. While there may be other important, historic religious leaders, none of them rose from the dead. Jesus is unique. He alone is God and He alone has the power to forgive sins and grant us eternal life. In our pluralistic, relativistic culture, an exclusive claim such as this is likely to start an argument. But Jesus didn’t shrink from controversy. Read the Gospel of John to see what I mean. Jesus repeatedly made outrageous claims of Deity, and he made these claims with singular exclusivity:

John 14:1-6
“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.”

Some people find this claim of exclusivity offensive. In many ways, it seems outrageous and arrogant, and it was no less controversial in Jesus’ day. Why should anyone accept such a claim? How could Jesus even make such a statement? It’s simple: Jesus is the only way to Heaven because God is the only way to God.

Think about it for a minute. If you want to visit me at my house, you’ll need to know me so I can tell you where I live. There are lots of Jim Wallace’s in California, there may even be a few J. Warner Wallace’s. If you want to visit my house, you’re going to need to know the right J. Warner Wallace. I am uniquely qualified to invite you to my house for dinner. I know where I live and I’m the one who can give you permission to join me. If a stranger tried to invite you to my house (even a well-intended, morally virtuous, incredibly wise stranger), I’m afraid you’re not getting in. You’ll need to know me personally if you want an invitation.

You’ll need to know God personally if you want to sit at His table. And that’s the important difference about Jesus of Nazareth.

In a similar way, well-intended, morally virtuous, incredibly wise religious leaders may try to invite you into God’s presence. But don’t be surprised to find their invitation insufficient. You’ll need to know God personally if you want to sit at His table. And that’s the important difference about Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus didn’t claim to be a prophet or religious leader. His claim was much grander and more controversial. Jesus said He was inviting us to His house; Jesus claimed to be God. His claims weren’t empty or unsupported. The New Testament Gospels repeatedly describe Jesus as God (and they provide evidence of His Deity):

Jesus Was Conceived of a Virgin:

The Virgin Conception Was Described as Evidence of Jesus’ Deity
The “virgin conception” is an essential belief of the authors of Scripture and the early Church.

The Virgin Conception Was Not Borrowed from Prior Mythologies
There are several problems with the claim the virgin conception was borrowed from prior pagan mythologies.

Even Mark’s Short Gospel Alludes to the Virgin Conception
The absence of a birth narrative in Mark does not demonstrate the account (including the virgin conception) is a work of fiction.

Jesus Repeatedly Demonstrated His Deity:

The Deity of Jesus Is A Central Claim of Christianity
The Deity of Christ is a Christian essential. It has been affirmed by believers based on the eyewitness testimony of those who saw Jesus rise from the dead.

Jesus Fulfilled Prophecy and Spoke Prophetically
While most of us are familiar with the prophecies Jesus fulfilled, it’s important for us to acknowledge the prophecies Jesus uttered.

Jesus Didn’t Need to Reveal Scientific Facts to Demonstrate His Deity
Why didn’t Jesus describe something beyond the knowledge of His contemporaries (i.e. the role of DNA or the nature of the Solar System) as a prophetic proof?

Jesus Made Statements Demonstrating His Deity:

Jesus’ Circumstantial Statements Demonstrated His Deity
Even if you’re inclined to deny Jesus ever directly said He was God, it’s unreasonable to argue against this indirect, circumstantial case.

Jesus’ Words Gave Him Away
The prophets spoke for God, But Jesus clearly spoke as God.

Jesus Specifically Said, “I am God”
When Jesus took on God’s holy title as his own, He was stating the modern equivalent of “I am God”.

Jesus Possessed the Authority of God:

Jesus’ Authority Was Based in His Deity
Jesus’ authority is grounded in His power; a Divine power separating Him from other wise rabbis. Jesus’ authority was based on His Deity.

The Obvious Deity of Jesus Elicited Worship
From His first days on earth to His last, Jesus was worshiped as God.

The Earliest Writers of Scripture Affirmed Jesus’ Deity
The earliest document evidence we have related to Jesus describes Him as a miracle worker who claimed to be God and rose from the dead.

Jesus Demonstrated His Deity At the Resurrection:

The Resurrection of Jesus is the Most Reasonable Inference
What are the possible explanations offered for Jesus’ Resurrection? Which is most reasonable?

Jesus Really Died Before He Rose from the Grave
The experience the disciples had with Jesus was very different than the experience the disciples had with Paul at the point of his stoning.

The Resurrection Appearances of Jesus Were Evidentially Diverse
The diversity of the Resurrection appearances ought to give us confidence in their reliability.

The Deity of Jesus is Historically Reliable:

The Historicity and Deity of Jesus is Supported by the Evidence
A helpful brief summary of the cumulative case for the historicity and deity of Jesus (also available as a free downloadable Bible Insert).

The Story of Jesus Wasn’t Changed Over Time
How do we know the story of Jesus wasn’t corrupted over time? What is the New Testament “Chain of Custody”?

The Deity of Jesus is Not a Late Legend
The earliest believers, in the earliest chapters of Christian history, proclaimed Jesus was God.

Jesus is unlike Buddha, Mohammed, Krishna, Baihau Lau, Joseph Smith or any other historic religious figure. Only Jesus rose from the grave. Resurrection Sunday was a unique event in history. It demonstrated the Deity of Jesus, and established His singular ability to invite us into the house of God. Jesus is God, and God Himself is inviting us home. He’s already prepared our rooms. Jesus is the only way to Heaven because God is the only way to God.

8 Ways Money Might Be Your Idol — Beautiful Christian Life

The room was tense.

I was meeting with a couple in my office. I was twenty-one, a freshly minted financial planner, and this was one of my first solo client meetings. This couple had plenty of income and resources, and now just needed to create a budget for their retirement plan. Each line item, however, only created more friction and anger between them.

“Do we really need to spend so much on wine?”

“What do you mean? It’s for your friends, too. It wouldn’t be a problem if you didn’t spend so much on your golf.”

“Oh, so my hobby is the problem? Not your club dues? You don’t even use half of these!”

What about finances would cause this couple, and so many others like them, to become so angry and frustrated? Often, at the heart of a frustrating situation is a stubborn love of money, which has become an idol. How can we detect a money idol in our hearts, and what can be done about it?

First, what are idols?

Before we discuss money as an idol, we need to understand what an idol is. It’s not just a favorite drummer or baseball pitcher. In biblical terms, an idol is anything we trust in, depend on, give ourselves to, love, esteem, or treasure more than God. Idols are usually good things, such as family, happiness, or safety, that our sinful and greedy hearts twist and abuse.

We are all susceptible to idols. As sinners, we are constantly finding empty “replacement gods” to worship and adore. The Protestant theologian John Calvin famously wrote, “the human mind is…a perpetual forge of idols” (Institutes of the Christian Religion, I.11.8).

Although common, idolatry is a serious problem. If the Greatest Commandment is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matt. 22:37), idols can become our “greatest sin.” Idolatry clouds our thinking, distracts our focus, and ultimately keeps us from glorifying God.

For believers, idolatry is a direct attack on God’s rights. The first question of the Heidelberg Catechism reminds us that we are no longer “[our] own but belong with body and soul, both in life and death, to [our] faithful Saviour Jesus Christ.” We wrongly give idols the worship due only to God.

Second, how can money be an idol?

The Bible warns us countless times against loving anything more than God. The love of money tops this list. Often it can be a consuming harmful pursuit. Wealth is a cruel master that will never satisfy those who pursue it (Eccles. 5:10-12). For those who run after riches, it “sprouts wings” and flies away (Prov. 23:4-5) leaving only poverty (Prov. 28:22).

More importantly, a money idol is spiritually dangerous. Paul describes loving money as “a root of all kinds of evils” that has led many away from the faith (1 Tim. 6:10) and to “ruin and destruction” (6:9). Ultimately, a heart that worships money shows a deeper problem: not worshipping God. It is impossible to serve God and money at the same time (Matt. 6:24).

Is money your idol?

While most believers know that loving money is wrong, many are unaware they may be committing this very sin. Has money become a secret idol in your heart? Here are a few signs that you may love money too much:

  1. Boasting about your wealth: Are you proud of the nest egg you’ve built up? Do you delight in what your income can buy? Be careful to avoid boasting in your bank account. Everything is a gift from God (James 1:17), including our wealth. And just as we receive, we can also lose. The same God “makes poor and makes rich” (1 Sam. 2:7) and gives and takes away (Job 1:21).
  2. Trusting in money: What gives you confidence and security, especially as the uncertainties of life begin crowding in? Do you find yourself mentally cataloging your financial resources in a crisis? Does your “back-up plan” involve only your emergency savings? As a financial planner I know the wisdom of careful savings; yet, don’t let money become your hope: “Whoever trusts in his riches will fall” (Prov. 11:28).
  3. Sinning for more: Sinning for money doesn’t only include robbing a bank or theft. We can sin in many smaller, everyday ways, such as cheating on taxes, dipping into resources at work, or not paying for all goods and services received. These smaller acts of dishonesty show that we value monetary gain over a purity before God. Proverbs warns that such unjust gain “takes away the life of its possessors” (Prov. 1:19).
  4. Unwillingness to help those in need: How generous are you with your wealth? Are you the first to help, or dragging your feet, the last? While we are to be wise with our giving, especially during seasons of tight finances, consistent stinginess may point to a heart valuing a healthy portfolio more than the lives of fellow believers. Even as Christ gave himself for us, we are called to give ourselves to others in need (1 John 3:16-17).
  5. Giving for your image: While being stingy can show a lack of concern for others, even giving can be done for the wrong motives. When giving, are you concerned with others noticing you? Do you donate more generously when others are watching? Watch out for the prideful heart of the Pharisees who gave for the praise of man and so earned “no reward from [our] Father who is in heaven” (Matt. 6:1).
  6. Insecurity about money: Are you constantly worried about losing money? Do unexpected purchases make you nervous? While caution in regard to your finances is wise, too much anxiety may point to a heart not resting in God’s providence. King David wrote that the little of the righteous is better than the abundance of the wicked, because “the Lord upholds the righteous” (Ps. 37:16-17). The same Lord who feeds the birds and clothes the flowers knows our needs (Matt. 6:25-33).
  7. Over-focusing on monetary gain: Do the ups and downs in the stock market drive the ups and downs in your heart? Are you always looking for the next hot investment idea? Have your friends and family members tired of hearing about your latest money-saving schemes? While we should be wise with our investments and resources, be careful not to focus on worldly gain at the expense of what truly matters (Matt. 16:26).
  8. Jealousy of richer people: What is your attitude toward those wealthier than you? Do you ever find yourself wishing you could have some of their money or secretly hoping they suffer financial loss? Jesus warned us to be on guard against covetousness, remembering that “one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15).  Paul also equates covetousness with idolatry (Col. 3:5). A jealous heart loves what it doesn’t have instead of loving our kind Lord who gives us all things.

How can we stop worshipping money?

If any of the signs above resonate with you, what can be done? How can we cure ourselves from a love of money?

Importantly, we can’t cure ourselves. We can never fix a money-crazed heart by giving away everything we own, following the strictest budget, never buying luxury goods, or forever forsaking vacations. Although budgeting is a great way to steward your resources wisely, it can never cure an idol-sick heart. As Paul wrote to the Colossians, these external rules—“do not handle, do not taste, do not touch”—appear wise but “are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh” (Col. 2:20-23).

We need a deeper healing, and that healing is found in Christ. To be rid of slavery to sin, including idolatry, we must first be set free in Christ by “the Spirit of life” (Rom. 8:2). As long as we remain outside of Christ, we are powerless (John 15:5-6; Rom. 8:8). When we belong to Christ, however, the Holy Spirit puts to death our sinful flesh and brings to fruition righteousness that glorifies God (Gal. 5:22-23). He enables us to live righteously.

For believers, freedom from the love of money starts by fixing our hearts and minds firmly on Christ (Col. 3:1-4). When our hearts are in the right place of loving, trusting, and worshipping God, we can then think rightly about money.

If you struggle with an idol of money, here are a few of the many precious promises in Scripture to encourage you to love and worship God instead:

  • “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you’” (Heb. 13:5). With the Lord on our side, we have nothing to fear. No bear market, no lost income, no unexpected financial hardship can keep us from God’s love and protection. We can rest contentedly in what we have since our all-knowing Great Shepherd watches over us.
  • “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matt. 6:33). It is easy to feel overwhelmed with the “unknowns” of money and all the scary things that can derail a well-prepared financial plan. A premature death or disability can leave a young family struggling to make ends meet. Identity theft can erase years of hard-earned savings. A shock to the market can cause a portfolio to tumble. Yet, these fears shouldn’t consume our thoughts. Our sovereign Lord is in charge and promises to take care of us. We are called to trust him and his plan, even when it is very different from our own.
  • “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). There are two applications in this verse. First, in Christ we are wealthier than the wealthiest people. We have an eternal inheritance that can never be taken from us (1 Pet. 1:4). Secondly, since we have received such a generous gift from God, we can give generously to others. Charity is no longer a painful duty but rather a glorious privilege.
  • As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy” (1 Tim. 6:17). Riches are uncertain: jobs can be lost, stocks can turn south, and savings can be emptied, but our God will stay faithful. He graciously gives us “all things that pertain to life and godliness” (2 Pet. 1:3). We have God the Father providing for us, Jesus Christ advocating for us, and the Holy Spirit guiding us. And we have the hope of heaven secured by the precious blood of Christ. No matter what happens in life, this will not be taken from us. We can then confidently say along with King David, “I shall not want” (Ps. 23:1).

Forsaking money as an idol isn’t a force of will but rather an act of adoration. When we know the blessings that are ours in Christ, we are then free to love, trust, and worship our God. We loosen our grip on money so that we may more firmly grasp the promises of our awe-inspiring Savior.

A Lament over Pharaoh and Egypt

32 In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me: “Son of man, raise a lamentation over Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him:

“You consider yourself a lion of the nations,
    but you are like a dragon in the seas;
you burst forth in your rivers,
trouble the waters with your feet,
    and foul their rivers.
  Thus says the Lord GOD:
I will throw my net over you
with a host of many peoples,
and they will haul you up in my dragnet.
  And I will cast you on the ground;
on the open field I will fling you,
and will cause all the birds of the heavens to settle on you,
and I will gorge the beasts of the whole earth with you.
I will strew your flesh upon the mountains
and fill the valleys with your carcass.1
I will drench the land even to the mountains
    with your flowing blood,
and the ravines will be full of you.
When I blot you out, I will cover the heavens
    and make their stars dark;
I will cover the sun with a cloud,
and the moon shall not give its light.
All the bright lights of heaven
will I make dark over you,
and put darkness on your land,
      declares the Lord GOD.

“I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring your destruction among the nations, into the countries that you have not known. 10 I will make many peoples appalled at you, and the hair of their kings shall bristle with horror because of you, when I brandish my sword before them. They shall tremble every moment, every one for his own life, on the day of your downfall.

11 “For thus says the Lord GOD: The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you. 12 I will cause your multitude to fall by the swords of mighty ones, all of them most ruthless of nations.

“They shall bring to ruin the pride of Egypt,
and all its multitude2 shall perish.
13   I will destroy all its beasts
    from beside many waters;
and no foot of man shall trouble them anymore,
nor shall the hoofs of beasts trouble them.
14   Then I will make their waters clear,
and cause their rivers to run like oil,
      declares the Lord GOD.
15   When I make the land of Egypt desolate,
and when the land is desolate of all that fills it,
when I strike down all who dwell in it,
then they will know that I am the LORD.

16 This is a lamentation that shall be chanted; the daughters of the nations shall chant it; over Egypt, and over all her multitude, shall they chant it, declares the Lord GOD.”

17 In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month,3 on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me: 18 “Son of man, wail over the multitude of Egypt, and send them down, her and the daughters of majestic nations, to the world below, to those who have gone down to the pit:

19   ‘Whom do you surpass in beauty?
Go down and be laid to rest with the uncircumcised.’

20 They shall fall amid those who are slain by the sword. Egypt4 is delivered to the sword; drag her away, and all her multitudes. 21 The mighty chiefs shall speak of them, with their helpers, out of the midst of Sheol: ‘They have come down, they lie still, the uncircumcised, slain by the sword.’

22 “Assyria is there, and all her company, its graves all around it, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, 23 whose graves are set in the uttermost parts of the pit; and her company is all around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who spread terror in the land of the living.

24 “Elam is there, and all her multitude around her grave; all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised into the world below, who spread their terror in the land of the living; and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit. 25 They have made her a bed among the slain with all her multitude, her graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for terror of them was spread in the land of the living, and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit; they are placed among the slain.

26 “Meshech-Tubal is there, and all her multitude, her graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for they spread their terror in the land of the living. 27 And they do not lie with the mighty, the fallen from among the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were laid under their heads, and whose iniquities are upon their bones; for the terror of the mighty men was in the land of the living. 28 But as for you, you shall be broken and lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword.

29 “Edom is there, her kings and all her princes, who for all their might are laid with those who are killed by the sword; they lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.

30 “The princes of the north are there, all of them, and all the Sidonians, who have gone down in shame with the slain, for all the terror that they caused by their might; they lie uncircumcised with those who are slain by the sword, and bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.

31 “When Pharaoh sees them, he will be comforted for all his multitude, Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, declares the Lord GOD. 32 For I spread terror in the land of the living; and he shall be laid to rest among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord GOD.”

Ezekiel Is Israel’s Watchman

33 The word of the LORD came to me: “Son of man, speak to your people and say to them, If I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their watchman, and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people, then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life. But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.

“So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, that person shall die in his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul.

Why Will You Die, Israel?

10 “And you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: ‘Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we rot away because of them. How then can we live?’ 11 Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?

12 “And you, son of man, say to your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses, and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness, and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness5 when he sins. 13 Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet if he trusts in his righteousness and does injustice, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered, but in his injustice that he has done he shall die. 14 Again, though I say to the wicked, ‘You shall surely die,’ yet if he turns from his sin and does what is just and right, 15 if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks in the statutes of life, not doing injustice, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16 None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he shall surely live.

17 “Yet your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just,’ when it is their own way that is not just. 18 When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it. 19 And when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he shall live by this. 20 Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, I will judge each of you according to his ways.”

Jerusalem Struck Down

21 In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, a fugitive from Jerusalem came to me and said, “The city has been struck down.” 22 Now the hand of the LORD had been upon me the evening before the fugitive came; and he had opened my mouth by the time the man came to me in the morning, so my mouth was opened, and I was no longer mute.

23 The word of the LORD came to me: 24 “Son of man, the inhabitants of these waste places in the land of Israel keep saying, ‘Abraham was only one man, yet he got possession of the land; but we are many; the land is surely given us to possess.’ 25 Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: You eat flesh with the blood and lift up your eyes to your idols and shed blood; shall you then possess the land? 26 You rely on the sword, you commit abominations, and each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife; shall you then possess the land? 27 Say this to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: As I live, surely those who are in the waste places shall fall by the sword, and whoever is in the open field I will give to the beasts to be devoured, and those who are in strongholds and in caves shall die by pestilence. 28 And I will make the land a desolation and a waste, and her proud might shall come to an end, and the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that none will pass through. 29 Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have made the land a desolation and a waste because of all their abominations that they have committed.

30 “As for you, son of man, your people who talk together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, say to one another, each to his brother, ‘Come, and hear what the word is that comes from the LORD.’ 31 And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain. 32 And behold, you are to them like one who sings lustful songs with a beautiful voice and plays6 well on an instrument, for they hear what you say, but they will not do it. 33 When this comes—and come it will!—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”

Evening: 1 Peter 1

1 Peter 1 (Listen)

Greeting

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood:

May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

Born Again to a Living Hope

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time1 the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.

Called to Be Holy

13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action,2 and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for

  “All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
  The grass withers,
    and the flower falls,
25   but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And this word is the good news that was preached to you.

November 24 Morning Verse of The Day

His Perfect Person

For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. (4:15)

At the end of verse 14 our great High Priest is again identified as Jesus the Son of God, blending His human name, Jesus, and His divine title, Son of God. Both natures—the divine and the human—are reflected in verse 15.

Jesus’ Humanity

Most people seem to think of God as being far removed from human life and concerns. Jesus was the very Son of God, yet His divinity did not prevent Him from experiencing our feelings, our emotions, our temptations, our pain. God became man, He became Jesus, to share triumphantly the temptation and the testing and the suffering of men, in order that He might be a sympathetic and understanding High Priest.

When we are troubled or hurt or despondent or strongly tempted, we want to share our feelings and needs with someone who understands. Jesus can sympathize with our weaknesses. The phrase “No one understands like Jesus” in the well-known hymn is not only beautiful and encouraging but absolutely true. Our great High Priest not only is perfectly merciful and faithful but also perfectly understanding. He has an unequaled capacity for sympathizing with us in every danger, in every trial, in every situation that comes our way, because He has been through it all Himself. At the tomb of Lazarus Jesus’ body shook in grief. In the Garden of Gethsemane, just before His arrest, He sweat drops of blood. He experienced every kind of temptation and testing, every kind of vicissitude, every kind of circumstance that any person will ever face. And He is at the right hand of the Father right now interceding for us.

Jesus not only had all the feelings of love, concern, disappointment, grief, and frustration that we have, but He had much greater love, infinitely more sensitive concerns, infinitely higher standards of righteousness, and perfect awareness of the evil and dangers of sin. Contrary, therefore, to what we are inclined to think, His divinity made His temptations and trials immeasurably harder for Him to endure than ours are for us.

Let me give an illustration to help explain how this can be true. We experience pain when we are injured, sometimes extreme pain. But if it becomes too severe, we will develop a temporary numbness, or we may even faint or go into shock. I remember that when I was thrown out of the car and skidded on my back on the highway, I felt pain for awhile and then felt nothing. Our bodies have ways of turning off pain when it becomes too much to endure. People vary a great deal in their pain thresholds, but we all have a breaking point. In other words, the amount of pain we can endure is not limitless. We can conclude, therefore, that there is a degree of pain we will never experience, because our bodies will turn off our sensitivity in one way or another—perhaps even by death—before we reach that point.

A similar principle operates in temptation. There is a degree of temptation that we may never experience simply because, no matter what our spirituality, we will succumb before we reach it. But Jesus Christ had no such limitation. Since He was sinless, He took the full extent of all that Satan could throw at Him. He had no shock system, no weakness limit, to turn off temptation at a certain point. Since He never succumbed, He experienced every temptation to the maximum. And He experienced it as a man, as a human being. In every way He was tempted as we are, and more. The only difference was that He never sinned. Therefore, when we come to Jesus Christ we can remember that He knows everything we know, and a great deal that we do not know, about temptation, and testing, and pain. We do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses.

This truth was especially amazing and unbelievable to Jews. They knew that God was holy, righteous, sinless, perfect, omnipotent. They knew His divine attributes and nature and could not comprehend His experiencing pain, much less temptation. Not only this, but under the Old Covenant God’s dealings with His people were more indirect, more distant. Except for special and rare instances, even faithful believers did not experience His closeness and intimacy in the way that all believers now can. Jews believed that God was incapable of sharing the feelings of men. He was too distant, too far removed in nature from man, to be able to identify with our feelings and temptations and problems.

If comprehending God’s sympathy was hard for Jews, it was even harder for most Gentiles of that day. The Stoics, whose philosophy dominated much Greek and Roman culture in New Testament times, believed that God’s primary attribute was apathy. Some believed that He was without feeling or emotions of any sort. The Epicureans claimed that the gods live intermundia, between the physical and spiritual worlds. They did not participate in either world, and so could hardly be expected to understand the feelings, problems, and needs of mortals. They were completely detached from mankind.

The idea that God could and would identify with men in their trials and temptations was revolutionary to Jew and Gentile alike. But the writer of Hebrews is saying that we have a God not only “who is there” but one “who has been here.”

Weaknesses does not refer directly to sin, but to feebleness or infirmity. It refers to all the natural limitations of humanity, which, however, include liability to sin. Jesus knew firsthand the drive of human nature toward sin. His humanity was His battleground. It is here that Jesus faced and fought sin. He was victorious, but not without the most intense temptation, grief, and anguish.

In all of this struggle, however, Jesus was without sin (chōris hamartia). He was completely apart from, separated from, sin. These two Greek words express the absolute absence of sin. Though He was mercilessly tempted to sin, not the slightest taint of it ever entered His mind or was expressed in His words or actions.

Some may wonder how Jesus can completely identify with us if He did not actually sin as we do. It was Jesus’ facing sin with His perfect righteousness and truth, however, that qualifies Him. Merely experiencing something does not give us understanding of it. A person can have many successful operations without understanding the least bit about surgery. On the other hand, a doctor may perform thousands of complicated and successful operations without ever having had the surgery himself. It is his knowledge of the disease or disorder and his surgical skill in treating it that qualifies him, not his having had the disease. He has great experience with the disease—much greater experience with it than any of his patients—having confronted it in all of its manifestations. Jesus never sinned, but He understands sin better than any man. He has seen it more clearly and fought it more diligently than any of us could ever be able to do.

Sinlessness alone can properly estimate sin. Jesus Christ did not sin, could not sin, had no capacity to sin. Yet His temptations were all the more terrible because He never sought relief from the duress by giving in. His sinlessness increased His sensitivity to sin. “For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lose heart. You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin” (Heb. 12:3–4). If you want to talk to someone who knows what sin is about, talk to Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ knows sin, and He knows and understands our weakness. Whatever Satan brings our way, there is victory in Jesus Christ. He understands; He has been here.

Dr. John Wilson often told the following story. Booth Tucker was conducting evangelistic meetings in the great Salvation Army Citadel in Chicago. One night, after he had preached on the sympathy of Jesus, a man came forward and asked Mr. Tucker how he could talk about a loving, understanding, sympathetic God. “If your wife had just died, like mine has,” the man said, “and your babies were crying for their mother who would never come back, you wouldn’t be saying what you’re saying.”

A few days later Mr. Tucker’s wife was killed in a train wreck. Her body was brought to Chicago and carried to the Citadel for the funeral. After the service the bereaved preacher looked down into the silent face of his wife and then turned to those who were attending. “The other day when I was here,” he said, “a man told me that, if my wife had just died and my children were crying for their mother, I would not be able to say that Christ was understanding and sympathetic, or that He was sufficient for every need. If that man is here, I want to tell him that Christ is sufficient. My heart is broken, it is crushed, but it has a song, and Christ put it there. I want to tell that man that Jesus Christ speaks comfort to me today.” The man was there, and he came and knelt beside the casket while Booth Tucker introduced him to Jesus Christ.

We have a sympathetic High Priest, whose priesthood is perfect and whose Person is perfect.[1]

15. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.

The recipients of the epistle might have raised an objection to the author’s teaching: Because Jesus is the Son of God and is exalted in heaven, far removed from man’s daily toils and struggles, his priesthood is of little consequence. The author, however, anticipates objections and in Hebrews 4:15 counters them. Not so, he says, for when I introduced the teaching I stated that we, the brothers of Jesus, have a high priest who is merciful and faithful. And “because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted” (Heb. 2:18).

The writer makes his point by stating this truth negatively and positively.

a. Negatively

The double negative—we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize—expresses a positive idea: yes, we have a highly exalted high priest who can descend to our level.

The original recipients of Hebrews knew that the teaching about Jesus’ high priesthood was articulated for the first time in this epistle. Perhaps they had to endure hardship, persecution, and isolation from the Jews if they professed the high priesthood of Jesus. They may have wondered: Would the exalted high priest understand their weaknesses if they failed to profess him publicly? Would he understand their situation? Yes, the author assured them, the heavenly high priest is able to sympathize. If we confess his name publicly, he suffers with us when others reproach, scorn, and insult us.

b. Positively

Jesus is not only fully divine; he is also fully human and thus understands our weaknesses and our temptations. Furthermore, Jesus himself experienced weaknesses and temptations. At the onset of his ministry, he was tempted by Satan; he coped with thirst, weariness, desertion, and disappointments throughout his earthly ministry.

Jesus, fully acquainted with human nature, is “touched with the feeling of our weaknesses,” as B. F. Westcott puts it. He has been tempted—in extent and range—in every way. Nothing in human experience is foreign to him, for he himself has endured it. And he has been tempted just as intensely as we are. The author adds the qualifying phrase yet was without sin.

When he was in the wilderness, Jesus experienced hunger, and the devil tempted him by asking him to make bread out of stones (Matt. 4:2–3). While hanging on the cross, he was mocked by chief priests, teachers of the law, and elders, who said, “Let him come down now from the cross … for he said, ‘I am the Son of God’ ” (Matt. 27:42, 43). He endured the full range of temptations, although, as the writer notes, without sinning. Sin is the only human experience in which Christ has no part.

The temptations we endure are given to us in accordance with what we are able to bear. God’s watchful eye is always upon us, so that we do not succumb. Says Paul:

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.

But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. [1 Cor. 10:13]

We, however, will never be able to fathom the depth of the temptations Jesus endured. Yet he withstood the depth, as well as the force, of these temptations. He overcame them as the sinless One.

Is Jesus (the sinless One) able to sympathize with us (weakened by sin) in our temptations? Because of his sinless nature, says John Albert Bengel, “the mind of the Savior much more acutely perceived the forms of temptation than we who are weak,” not only during his earthly ministry but also during his service as the exalted high priest. He anticipates temptations we are going to face, sympathizes fully with us, and “is able to help [us] who are being tempted” (Heb. 2:18).[2]

4:15. How can we hold fast to our faith? Has God done anything to make this possible? This verse answers these questions. The writer of Hebrews had already declared the ability of Jesus to help the tempted (2:18). He now states negatively what he had earlier stated positively. Why would he change from a positive statement to a negative statement?

He may have tried to deal with some people who felt that Jesus Christ was too remote from human need. He stated three facts about Christ which would help readers know that Christ was no stranger in helping struggling human beings.

First, Jesus is able to sympathize with our weaknesses. Weaknesses is broad enough to include any form of human stumbling, bumbling, or failure. Christ has sympathy for the needy.

Second, Christ has been tempted in every way, just as we are. This statement may mean that he faced the full range of temptations we face. It need not mean that he met each specific type of temptation which we face. A sample of the entire range of options for sinning fell on Jesus. Because Jesus never yielded to sin, we know that he faced more intense temptation. Most of us say “yes” to sin before Satan has thrown all his weapons of temptation at us. Jesus said “no” as Satan hurled every arrow in his quiver. He resisted until he broke the power of Satan (Heb. 2:14).

Third, Christ was without sin. Jesus was completely a human being (Heb. 2:17), for he became like his brothers in every way. Must a person experience sin in order to be human? No! Jesus had no sin or deceit in his life (1 Pet. 2:22).

Jesus could have chosen to sin by giving in to hunger, desire for acclaim, or lust for power (Matt. 4:1–11). The fact that he chose not to do this shows that he lived out the condition of sinlessness. He battled constantly with Satan’s temptations and claimed victory in the struggle with temptation.

If Jesus had sinned by surrendering to temptation, he would have needed an atonement. He would have been no better than the old priests who first had to offer sacrifice for their own sins (Heb. 7:27). He would have lacked the qualifications to secure redemption for us. Any sin in Jesus’ life would have made his sacrifice unacceptable (1 Pet. 1:19).

Our sinless Savior provided for us a perfect redemption. His victorious experience with temptation provides sympathy, encouragement, and victory for us in our temptation.[3]

November 24 – Waiting On a New River in Jerusalem! | VCY

TODAY’S BIBLE READING CHALLENGE:
  Ezekiel 47:1-48:35
  1 Peter 2:11-3:7
  Psalm 119:49-64
  Proverbs 28:12-13

Ezekiel 47:1 — Jimmy DeYoung notes the similarities between this and “when water flows from the throne of God” in Revelation 22:1. Right now, the east side of the Temple Mount is fairly dry. Here’s some photo’s I took when I was in Israel: As you can see, it’s not quite “a river that could not be passed over” (Ezekiel 47:5). Nor has the Dead Sea been healed yet (Ezekiel 47:8). There’s no fishers at En Gedi yet (Ezekiel 47:10), but the LORD God is saying that it will happen!

Ezekiel 47:16 — Hamath is 240 kilometers north of the current northern Israelite border in Mount Hermon. This prophecy is still yet to be fulfilled.

Ezekiel 47:23 — The LORD God is allowing for immigration into the land of Israel, but this is not just immigration – He’s calling for adoption. The stranger will have an inheritance of the tribes of Israel? That’s what Paul talked about in Romans 9:4; adoption of non-Jews into the Israelites.

We read earlier about God’s Old Testament immigration policy in Ezekiel 44:9 – they must be circumcised in heart and flesh. But as Paul declared, we are circumcised by Jesus Christ in the flesh when He took away our sinful flesh (Colossians 2:11) and circumcised our heart (Romans 2:29). We are risen with Him (Colossians 2:12).

Ezekiel 48 — Here’s a map from 1729 depicting what they thought it would look like:

Ezekiel 48:35 — Ezekiel’s vision closes out similar to Revelation 21:2-3, noting that the LORD God is there. We have a different arrangement of the twelve tribes from Numbers 2, though. Also notice that the twelve gates match up to the twelve gates of the New Jerusalem in Revelation 21:12.

When we get to Revelation, we’ll read about the New Jerusalem. Both the New Jerusalem and Ezekiel’s city are perfect squares. Some compare the “camp of the saints and the beloved city” in Revelation 20:9 to the City of Ezekiel, but the New Jerusalem, measured like Ezekiel’s city was, is 1,000 times bigger, with walls 1,380 miles high (or almost 6x the height of the International Space Station). God is preparing a place for us (John 14:3)!

I Peter 2:13-14 — Peter echoes Paul’s message in Romans 13 – submission to human government. God ordained human government back in Genesis 9:6, authorizing mankind for the first time to execute capital punishment.

1 Peter 2:18 — Why does the Bible justify slavery? The Roman “servants” were not there of their own freewill. In spite of this, though, Peter tells the servants to submit to their masters, even the froward ones (those difficult to deal with) who may even punish those who are doing well (1 Peter 2:20). He calls for wives to submit to their husbands (1 Peter 3:1). Why?

Jesus had more rights than anyone. He had less sin than anyone. To be accurate, He had no sin (1 Peter 2:22). Yet He suffered (1 Peter 2:21), submitted himself to unjust human government, to cruel Roman masters, to Jewish taunts without retort (1 Peter 2:22), in order to bring us life through His death.

1 Peter 2:24 — Peter declares the fulfillment of Isaiah 53:5 – “… with his stripes we are healed!”

1 Peter 3:7 — Husbands, want God to listen to your prayers? Dwell with your wife according to knowledge! Honor her!

Psalm 119:49 — Are you discouraged? Hope in God’s Word! Need comfort in affliction? Go to the Word (Psalm 119:50). Need a song? Go to the statutes (Psalm 119:54). Can’t sleep in the night? Remember the LORD (Psalm 119:55). Be not discouraged!

Proverbs 28:13 — God already knows what sins you’ve committed. Just admit to Him what He already knows!

November 24 – Spiritual watchfulness | Reformed Perspective

“So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:6

Scripture reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:6-10

Paul has taught the Thessalonians that they and all other Christians are sons of light and not of darkness. They belong to the day, not to the night and therefore Paul exhorts them not to sleep, but to remain watchful and sober. To sleep, in this context means to live as if there will be no tomorrow or never be a day of judgment. Paul is warning against spiritual and moral lethargy. To be watchful is to live a sanctified life, conscious of the coming Judgment Day. The watchful individual has his lamp burning and his loins girded and in that spirit, he looks forward to the return of the Bridegroom. Christians need to be awake and sober.

Paul contrasts the soberness of the Christian with the drunkenness of the worldling. The world stumbles around in drunkenness and darkness, but the Christian walks soberly and expectantly in the light.

But for the Christian, watchfulness does not mean simply being passive while waiting. That was Paul’s point to the Thessalonians. They had become passive in their waiting and watching and now Paul stirs them up to intense activity. Paul tells them that their calling as children of the light is to carry the light into the world. They were to fight the good fight of faith and conquer the darkness with the light of the gospel.

The question Paul presses upon us today is this: to which kingdom do you belong, light or darkness? Are you still asleep or awake? Has the light of Jesus Christ shone upon you?

Suggestions for prayer

Ask the Lord to strengthen your faith so that the light of Christ may shine ever more bright in you.
