October 21 | 2 Kings 2; 2 Thessalonians 2; Daniel 6; Psalms 112–113 (Part 2)

from the account of daniel in the lions’ den (Dan. 6), we observe a man about eighty years of age as faithful at the end of his life as he was at the beginning. Some notes:

(1) Despite his advanced years, Daniel’s administrative abilities and his passion for integrity make him highly valuable to a relatively enlightened ruler such as Darius. The same virtues make him a target of envy to lesser men, who are happy to engage in a dirty-tricks campaign to bring him down. Dirty tricks were not invented by Nixon; they stretch back to the Fall. Blessed is the Christian whose life is so transparent, who is “trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent” (6:4), so that the only way he or she can be destroyed is by making Christian conduct and conviction a crime.

(2) Daniel serves as a model of how a Christian may serve in a government that is itself in no way Christian. He offers no comfort to those who withdraw not only from sin but from responsibility and godly influence.

(3) The expression “laws of the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be repealed” (6:8) was probably a badge of honor in the empire. Probably the policy was designed to discourage favoritism, corrupt exceptions, shifting pragmatism. But no legal system can ensure consistent justice. Corrupt people will always find ways of exploiting the system to oppress others and advance themselves. Hidden behind the slogan is a deeper issue. Historically there has long been a tension between positive law theory, in which the only law to be obeyed is that enacted by government, and natural law theory, in which some fundamentals are thought to be discoverable by human beings. In the name of equity and justice, British courts, until fairly recently, would sometimes set aside positive law in favor of natural law where it was pretty obvious an injustice was otherwise being committed. Both in Britain and in the United States, such considerations are now rare. In Britain, what must be obeyed is what Parliament says; in the United States, what must be obeyed is what the Supreme Court says. In both instances, positive law largely prevails, as in ancient Persia. The matter has become increasingly difficult here since Western states have come to think they have a therapeutic role in society, defining the “illnesses” that must be confronted and the “therapies” that must be imposed as they go along. The potential for injustice and inequity multiplies.

(4) In the crisis precipitated by this unjust law, Daniel remains consistent, neither flaunting his independence nor hiding his convictions and habits. The outcome he leaves with God—very much as in Jesus’ prayer (“Your will be done”) and example (Matt. 6:10; 26:39). Such maturity may well become a cherished model for us.1

it has always been easy to get things wrong about the return of Jesus. Sometimes this springs from ignorance, sometimes from a distorted emphasis. Judging from 2 Thessalonians 2:1–12, such dangers have been present since the early church.

We maintain plenty of our own skewed interpretations about these matters today. For example, because in 1 Thessalonians 4:17 Paul writes, “After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air,” many contemporary scholars hold that Paul thought the Lord’s return would take place during his own lifetime, and of course he was wrong. In reality, 1 Thessalonians 4:17 no more proves Paul believed Christ would return during his lifetime than 1 Corinthians 6:14 proves he thought Christ would not return in his lifetime. There Paul writes, “By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.” Although he uses the first person in both places, Paul is simply identifying himself with the Christians who will enjoy these experiences—whether meeting the Lord and thus escaping death, or dying and ultimately rising from the dead. Yet the contemporary misconception on this point is widespread.

The misconception behind 2 Thessalonians 2:1–12 is not entirely clear, but apparently the Thessalonians had received a letter falsely purporting to be from Paul but lacking his well-known handwriting and signature at the end (which is why Paul draws the attention of his readers to these features in 3:17). That deceptive letter somehow convinced some Thessalonians that “the day of the Lord” had already come (2:1–2); either they had in some way been abandoned, or else they were being taught some sort of “over-realized” eschatology that tried to reserve all the blessings of salvation for the present. Perhaps there is immortality beyond death, but under this vision there is no need for a personal return of Jesus Christ, or a crisis of judgment and triumphant reign.

So Paul gives some reasons for saying that the day of the Lord has not come. In this he is following the example of the Lord Jesus, who also gave some instruction about those who would falsely identify someone as the Christ (Matt. 24:23–27). Certain things must take place before the Lord Jesus returns, and then he will decisively and unambiguously destroy the opposition “with the breath of his mouth” and “by the splendor of his coming” (2:8). The lies may even be surrounded and supported by “counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders” (2:9); at heart, however, people perish because they refuse to love the truth (2:10). Sooner or later God pronounces judgment by sending the delusion they much prefer.1

October 21 | Obeying God’s Commands

“The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes” (Ps. 19:8).

Obedience to the Word is the hallmark of a true believer.

It isn’t popular these days to speak of God’s Word as a book of commandments. Commands imply law, and we’re accustomed to grace. But the fact is, both the Old and New Testaments contain many commandments that all God’s people are to obey.

The Apostle John said, “By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected” (1 John 2:3–5). John equated the commandments of God with the Word of God.

Jesus Himself said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15), and “He who has My commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me; and he who loves Me shall be loved by My Father” (v. 21). If you truly love Christ, your life will be characterized by a pattern of obedience to His Word.

Every commandment of God is “pure,” the psalmist said (Ps. 19:8). Its effect is “enlightening the eyes.” God’s Word brings spiritual truth into clear focus. Not every passage of Scripture is easy to understand, but taken as a whole, the message of the Bible is clear to the regenerate mind.

But as clear as the Bible is to believers, unredeemed people can’t understand it. To them it’s foolishness because their minds are unenlightened (1 Cor. 2:14). In their spiritual blindness they choose humanistic philosophical speculations over God’s Word. But as a believer, you are continually being enlightened by the truths of God’s Word as the Holy Spirit enables you to understand them and apply them to your life.

Your ability to understand the Word is a priceless gift. Take advantage of it daily by expanding your Bible knowledge and increasing your obedience.

October 21 | Who Receives Spiritual Resurrection?

Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.—John 5:25

Jesus begins this emphatic, unarguable declaration with the seemingly paradoxical statement “an hour is coming and now is.” The hour of the believers’ resurrection “now is” in the sense that when they “were dead in [their] trespasses and sins … [God] made [them] alive together with Christ, and raised [them] up with Him” (Eph. 2:1, 5–6). Yet the hour is still “coming” in the sense that the resurrection of their physical bodies is yet future (1 Cor. 15:35–54; Phil. 3:20–21).

This “already/not yet” sense of the phrase may be understood in another way. When Christ was present, He offered spiritual life to all who would heed His Word (6:37; Matt. 7:24–27). Yet the full expression of the new era He inaugurated would not come until the day of Pentecost (14:17). Both during Christ’s earthly ministry and in the fullness of the Spirit’s ministry after Pentecost, the spiritually dead who heard “the voice of the Son of God” would live.

Scripture frequently describes unbelievers as spiritually dead. To be spiritually dead is to be insensitive to the things of God and totally unable to respond to Him. Paul vividly described it as living “in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and [being] by nature children of wrath” (Eph. 2:3).

Rejoice in the amazing grace of God for making you alive together with Christ.

October 21 | Daily Treasures

Intro

Welcome to Daily Treasures from the Word of God. Today’s reading is First Samuel 28 through 31. Our lesson is from First Samuel 28:5–6, “When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart. He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets.” (NASU)

Lesson

We need to be careful of allowing fear to control us. This can disarm the believer. We should not be foolish if a dangerous situation arises but we should be able to put our total confidence in the Lord, who can rescue us.

First, Saul saw the Philistine army. The enmity between Israel and the Philistines went back for many years. Saul’s problem was he focused on the strength of the Philistines rather than seeing the hand of the Lord. He looked at the apparent potency of his enemy instead of seeking God’s presence.

Next, Saul was afraid. This was the result of not trusting in the Lord; instead he looked at himself. As a matter of fact, he was more than just afraid. Our text states he was terrorized. The degree of fear was great. When one is in a panic mode, it totally disarms the person because they are not able to think sensibly. When a person tends to freeze, it makes one totally subject to their emotions and prey to the enemy of our souls.

Third, Saul inquired of the Lord. It appears this was his last resort. It is good to see that King Saul did try to seek the presence of the Lord but tragically the Lord did not respond. The ways Saul sought the Lord were through dreams, Urim and the prophets. The Almighty does use different channels to communicate His will but Saul had disobeyed the Lord.

The king should have waited on the Lord but he took matters into his own hands. He contacted a medium. This was an abomination and totally prohibited by the Torah. In reality, what Saul did was to transfer his allegiance from the Lord and His revelation to the lies of the kingdom of darkness. How tragic!

Any part of the occult world whether it be horoscopes, Ouija or contacting the dead are not to be played with because the satanic powers are behind those practices. There is a great difference between magic and signs and wonders in the Bible.

In review, Saul saw the Philistine army. Saul was afraid. And Saul inquired of the Lord.

May we learn to trust wholehearted in the Lord and have the Bible as our rule of thumb. The Bible is there to use as our reference guide to life. It informs us on how to behave according to God’s desires and will. God’s Word and counsel are indispensable for daily living.

October 21st | And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.—Luke 2:13, 14.

I HAVE read that on the shores of the Adriatic sea the wives of fishermen, whose husbands have gone far out upon the deep, are in the habit of going down to the seashore at night and singing the first verse of some beautiful hymn. After they have sung it they listen until they hear brought on the wind across the sea the second verse sung by their brave husbands—and both are happy. Perhaps, if we would listen, we too might hear on this storm-tossed world of ours, some sound, some whisper, borne from afar to tell us there is a heaven which is our home; and when we sing our hymns upon the shores of the earth, perhaps we may hear their sweet echoes breaking in music upon the sands of time, and cheering the hearts of those who are pilgrims and strangers along the way.1

October 21: Visions of Grandeur

Ezekiel 41:1–42:20; Revelation 20:7–21:8; Job 38:34–41

In times of struggle, a vision of grander glory is often enough to move us beyond our current circumstances. We find encouragement in glimpsing the vastness and power of God’s plan.

When Ezekiel and God’s people are weary and desperate for hope, God gives His prophet an unusual vision: He shows Ezekiel the temple—not as it is, but as it should be. The temple symbolizes Yahweh’s presence among His people. It points them toward proper worship and life. It reminds them not only of who He is, but who they are meant to be. As we tour the temple with Ezekiel, we see that God intends to restore not only the temple, but also proper worship (Ezek 40:1–42:20).

John the apostle’s vision recorded in Revelation echoes Ezekiel’s: “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea did not exist any longer. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband” (Rev 21:1–2). This new Jerusalem, this new hope, promises restoration, revitalization, and reconciliation. It’s more than just a structure—it is a way of being.

When Yahweh casts visions of this life restored, He shows His people that He cares deeply about His relationship with them. He will make it right. He will enact His plan through Jesus, the bridge and the reason why God can proclaim, “Behold, I am making all things new!” (Rev 21:5). This is our hope, now and always.

October 21 | FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT WITH ALL THY MIGHT

John S. B. Monsell, 1811–1875

Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. (1 Timothy 6:12)

As Christians, one of our chief characteristics should be courage, especially when it involves our spiritual defense of the gospel. How easily, however, our noble intentions for this kind of fortitude are changed into attitudes of despair and defeat because of annoying circumstances, the secular media, or disappointment in others. To avoid these courage-defeating forces, we must have our “inner man” renewed daily with spiritual nourishment. We cannot be truly strong if we do not gain the inner strength that comes from God.

When John Monsell wrote this hymn text, he provided ten strong imperatives for a triumphant Christian life: 1) Fight the good fight; 2) Lay hold of life; 3) Run the straight race; 4) Lift up thine eyes; 5) Seek His face; 6) Cast care aside; 7) Lean on thy Guide; 8) Trust and prove; 9) Faint not nor fear; and 10) Only believe. Each of these is worthy of further pondering.

John Monsell was an Anglican clergyman who published a hymnal in 1863 titled Love and Praise for the Church Year. In that song book this hymn first appeared under the title “The Fight for Faith.” This respected man of the pulpit was also known as a strong advocate of vigorous congregational singing, constantly persuading his people that congregational singing should be fervent and joyous. “We are too distant and reserved in our praises,” he would say. “We sing, but not as we should sing to Him who is the chief among ten thousand, the altogether lovely.” Perhaps there is a stronger relationship between our times of joyous praise and our ability to “fight the good fight” than we generally realize.

Fight the good fight with all thy might! Christ is thy strength, and Christ thy right; lay hold on life, and it shall be thy joy and crown eternally.

Run the straight race through God’s good grace. Lift up thine eyes and seek His face; life with its way before us lies; Christ is the path and Christ the prize.

Cast care aside, lean on thy Guide; His boundless mercy will provide; trust and thy trusting soul shall prove Christ is its life and Christ its love.

Faint not nor fear; His arms are near; He changeth not, and thou art dear; only believe, and thou shalt see that Christ is all in all to thee.

21 october (1855) | Christ’s prayer for his people

“I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.” John 17:15

We never have any encouragement to ask God to let us die. Christians are always wanting to die when they have any trouble or trial. You ask them why? “Because we would be with the Lord.” O yes, they want to be with the Lord, when troubles and temptations come upon them. But it is not because they are yearning to be with the Lord, it is because they desire to get rid of their troubles. They want to get home, not so much for the Saviour’s company, as to get out of the little hard work. They did not wish to go away when they were in quiet and prosperity. Like lazy fellows, as most of us are, when we get into a little labour we beg to go home. It is quite right sometimes that you should desire to depart, because you would not prove yourself to be a true Israelite if you did not want to go to Jerusalem. You may pray to be taken home out of the world, but Christ will not take up the petition. When your prayers come to the Lord, this little one may try to get amongst them, but Christ will say, “I do not know anything about you, ‘I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world.’ ” You may wish it sincerely, and really desire it, but you will not at present get your Master to pray with you. Instead, then, of crying, or wishing to be away from the battle, brace yourself up in the name of the Lord. Every wish to escape the fight is but a desertion of your Master.

for meditation: Elijah prayed it while he was afraid for his life (1 Kings 19:3, 4)! But God had a different departure planned for him (2 Kings 2:11). Jonah prayed it twice when he was angry (Jonah 4:3, 9) soon after begging God to deliver him from drowning (Jonah 2:2, 7). What a good thing God rejects our foolish requests when we or they are outside his will. Paul had the mind of Christ on this matter.

21 OCTOBER | Working to Give

Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Ephesians 4:28

Paul proceeds one step further regarding the change that he requires of the faithful. He tells them they must not only abstain from defrauding other people and from robbing them of their goods, but they must also try to help those in need.

The way the apostle teaches us to abstain from all evil seems to be very hard. Rather than living at our ease, as we have been accustomed to do, and having many goods, we should prepare to scratch our living out of the earth, work with great pain and travail, and in all of that to fare very harshly. Though this way seems very hard, we must go further. When we have the means to make a living without using wicked practices, we must spare something of what God gives us through his blessing and give it to relieve the needy.

Therefore, let us not regard our own inclinations, considering that of our own nature we are so perverse and wedded to our own profit that each one of us will always be well stocked. Since we have so little concern for others, even if they are members of the body of our Lord Jesus Christ, we must strive to force ourselves to do them good, for that striving will bring us together.

We must bear down upon our affections, then employ ourselves earnestly and sincerely until we confess that the bread we eat comes to us from God’s hand. We are sustained by his goodness as by a father who gives a portion to his children. So let us labor to do good with the little we have and to help those who are in need.

for meditation: We need Jesus to give us eyes to see the needs of others and hearts willing to work hard, not for our own gain, but for others. Giving to others is not our natural inclination, but Paul believes that the gospel is strong enough to turn even those who were thieves into compassionate and generous people. Is this evidenced in your life?1

October 23 – “I Will Obey the Voice of the LORD” … If It Matches My Desires | VCY

TODAY’S BIBLE READING CHALLENGE:
  Jeremiah 42:1-44:23
  2 Timothy 2:1-21

Jeremiah 42:2-3 — It’s about time! Jerusalem has fallen, the military governor was assassinated, the assassin’s coup was scattered, and those who are left want to listen to God finally … or do they?

Jeremiah 43:2 — God gave them a simple command, “Stay put (Jeremiah 42:10-12)!” They claimed they would obey (Jeremiah 42:2-3), not just once but twice (Jeremiah 42:5-6), and they even called Jeremiah a liar.

Jeremiah 43:3 — Baruch is again named. According to Josephus (Ant. x. 9, § 1), Baruch was a member of a very distinguished family.

Jeremiah 43:8 — Where is Tanpanhes? Roughly along the Suez Canal in Egypt. The children of Israel are regressing. They lost their kingdom, they did what was right in their own eyes, they recrossed the Sinai, and now they’ve returned to Egypt!

Jeremiah 43:12 — So one invasion and defeat isn’t enough! There’s another one coming!

Jeremiah 44:8 — They disobeyed with a king, they disobeyed without a king, and now they’re offering incense to the gods of Egypt!

Jeremiah 44:17 — Who is the “queen of heaven?” The “queen of heaven” is a false idol similar to Baal. We know this because vs. 16 says they will not listen to the voice of the LORD but to this other one. They ascribe their blessings not to the LORD but to the “queen.” We then see that the LORD regarded it as an evil abomination (Jeremiah 44:22).

2 Timothy 2:1 — Paul wants his son Timothy to be strong. As strong as a soldier (2 Timothy 2:3), as strong as an athlete (2 Timothy 2:5), and as strong as a farmer (2 Timothy 2:6).

2 Timothy 2:11-13 — Many people believe Paul is quoting an ancient hymn. This hymn emphasized the cost of discipleship – death, suffering, refusal to deny Jesus. And yet even if we don’t believe, it doesn’t matter. God’s Word still stands!

2 Timothy 2:15 — The AWANA theme verse! AWANA stands for “Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed.” Four million kids every week are studying God’s Word because Lance Latham and Art Rorheim started a ministry to kids in Chicago.

2 Timothy 2:19 — We are told that we are under grace, and that the Old Testament Law doesn’t govern us. Yes, the 613 laws of the Old Testament are given to Israel for a previous dispensation. One-third dealt with the Temple and 1/3 were conditional, so the average Israelite didn’t have as much of a burden as we think. In contrast, we have over 1,000 imperatives given to us in the New Testament. We are commanded to depart from iniquity. We are held to a higher standard than Israel was. We are called to be a “vessel unto honor, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use (2 Timothy 2:21).”

Psalm 92:2 — Morning by morning and evening by evening, let’s praise the LORD!

Psalm 93:4 — The oceans cover 71% of the world’s surface. A hurricane produces “200 times the world-wide electrical generating capacity.” Yet the LORD is mightier!

Proverbs 26:4-5 — How do we handle contradictory statements? In our society we have dueling maxims:

  • “Haste makes waste” & “Strike while the iron is hot”
  • “A penny saved is a penny earned” & “Penny wise, pound foolish”

The challenge is to deal with the fool without being like him. Let’s avoid being a fool (Proverbs 26:12, 29:20).

Precious Things | VCY

And of Joseph he said, Blessed of the Lord be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep that coucheth beneath.Deuteronomy 33:13

We may be rich in such things as Joseph obtained, and we may have them in a higher sense. Oh, for “the precious things of heaven”!

Power with God and the manifestation of power from God are most precious. We would enjoy the peace of God, the joy of the Lord, the glory of our God. The benediction of the three divine Persons in love, and grace, and fellowship we prize beyond the most fine gold. The things of earth are as nothing in preciousness compared with the things in heaven.

“The dew.” How precious is this! How we pray and praise when we have the dew! What refreshing, what growth, what perfume, what life there is in us when the dew is about. Above all things else, as plants of the Lord’s own right hand planting, we need the dew of His Holy Spirit.

“The deep that coucheth beneath.” Surely this refers to that unseen ocean underground which supplies all the fresh springs which make glad the earth. Oh, to tap the eternal fountains!   • Obama-appointed judge interferes in 2024 election: Tanya Chutkan, the judge in the Trump-Biden election-interference case, has herself interfered in the Trump-Harris election by unsealing and releasing a mountain of court documents just 18 days before the election. At issue are nearly 1,900 pages of Trump-deranged “special counsel” Jack Smith’s case against the former president, much of it highly redacted, but still providing a window into Smith’s case. Chutkan insisted, “If the court withheld information that the public otherwise had a right to access solely because of the potential political consequences of releasing it, that withholding could itself constitute — or appear to be — election interference.” But a May 25, 2022, memo from Attorney General Merrick Garland to all DOJ employees says this: “As Department employees … we must be particularly sensitive to safeguarding the Department’s reputation for fairness, neutrality, and non-partisanship. Simply put, partisan politics must play no role in the decisions of federal investigators or prosecutors regarding any investigations or criminal charges.” So why is he allowing a federal judge — a Trump-hating, Obama-appointed judge, no less — to vomit up a trove of heretofore sealed documents regarding a major party presidential candidate?
  • Endangered Dem senators embrace Trump: In a sure sign that Democrats are increasingly worried that Donald Trump is heading to an election victory, several vulnerable Democrat lawmakers are siding with him in a desperate bid to stave off defeat. Senators Bob Casey (PA) and Tammy Baldwin (WI) have both ran ads featuring Trump, and not in a negative light. Casey’s ad states that he “bucked Biden to protect fracking, and he sided with Trump to end NAFTA and put tariffs on China to stop them from cheating.” Baldwin’s ad narrator says that she “got President Trump to sign her Made in America bill.” In Montana, Democrat Senator Jon Tester has sidled up to Trump, while in Ohio, Senator Sherrod Brown ran an ad touting that he “wrote a bill that Donald Trump signed to crack down on drugs at the border.” The blatant hypocrisy here is that all of these Democrat senators voted in favor of impeaching Trump twice.
  • Wolverine State Dems set the stage for a steal: On Sunday, in the crucial swing state of Michigan, which Donald Trump won narrowly in 2016 but “lost” narrowly in 2020 amid a cloud of election night controversy in Detroit, Democrat Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said that she expects to have election results “by end of the day Wednesday” — the day after the election. “Well, you know, in 2020, we had the results of our highest turnout election in Michigan history within 24 hours of the polls closing. The unofficial results were completed by 8 p.m. on Wednesday. So we’re tracking that again this year.” Great. We need to be patient. That gives the Democrats plenty of time to find the necessary votes. In 2020, Florida showed how a large state could tally its votes and report them on election night. Why can’t Democrat-run swing states follow the Sunshine State’s lead? The answer, sadly, is obvious: Because it would limit their options.

  • CBS objects to Trump’s accusation: CBS has again been caught interfering in an election. Just as with the Dan Rather Network’s “fake but accurate” smear of Republican President George W. Bush prior to the 2004 election, “60 Minutes” released a preview of its interview with Kamala Harris featuring an incoherent word salad about Israel, which was widely ridiculed, and which the network subsequently cut from the version it aired on TV. After more than a week of criticism, including calls to release the full transcript of the interview, CBS issued a statement: “Former President Donald Trump is accusing ‘60 Minutes’ of deceitful editing of our Oct. 7 interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. That is false,” the statement begins. “‘60 Minutes’ gave an excerpt of our interview to ‘Face the Nation’ that used a longer section of her answer than that on ‘60 Minutes.’ Same question. Same answer. But a different portion of the response. … The portion of her answer on ‘60 Minutes’ was more succinct, which allows time for other subjects in a wide-ranging 21-minute-long segment.” Uh-huh.

Policy

  • Biden expands abortion drug mandate: In a move designed to gin up support for Harris’s flagging campaign, the White House announced it will expand Joe Biden’s over-the-counter contraceptive mandate. Democrats have made abortion a central issue since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The new rule from the Department of Health and Human Services will require all health insurance providers to cover the cost of all birth control, including the use of over-the-counter abortion drugs. The obvious objection to this rule is that it infringes on religious liberty as well as states’ rights. Since this last-minute rule change will generate a legal response, its purpose is primarily aimed at the November elections.
  • Harris wants the world’s highest death tax: Trump has accused Harris of being a Marxist, generating consternation from the Leftmedia and their cohort of “fact-checkers,” who assert that Trump is lying because she has never said she’s a communist. Well, one doesn’t need to self-identify as a Marxist to be one, as Harris’s views on equity demonstrate. Her views on taxes are equally troublesome, revealing she doesn’t believe that wealth should remain in a family. Part of the Republican tax cut under Trump expanded to $13.6 million the amount of inheritance exempted from the estate tax, or death tax. This will revert to the pre-2018 level of just $5 million if lawmakers don’t make the change permanent. Even worse, Harris wants to reduce the exemption to roughly $3.5 million. She also wants to increase the estate tax rate from 40% to 55% or even 65%. Effectively, Harris wants the government to take two-thirds of someone’s property upon their death. If one is advocating for the government to own nearly everything, is that not Marxism in a nutshell?

  • Jury selection in Penny trial begins: Retired U.S. Marine and New York City subway hero Daniel Penny is on trial this week in Manhattan for having protected his fellow passengers from a deranged and dangerous subway rider who’d been threatening them. Jury selection begins today, and it will be drawn from a pool of Penny’s “peers” who voted 9-to-1 for Joe Biden four years ago. Get a load of this vile characterization of Penny by the AP: “To some New Yorkers, he’s the white vigilante who choked an innocent Black man to death on the subway. To others, he’s the U.S. Marine Corps veteran whose attempt to subdue a mentally ill man ended in tragedy.” Whoa. “An innocent Black man”? Are these people kidding? Sadly, the AP can’t even get past the headline without lying. “Man charged in NYC subway chokehold death set to stand trial,” it reads. But Penny applied a carotid restraint to the would-be assailant, 30-year-old Jordan Neely, not a chokehold. “I acted in a way that would protect the other passengers, protect myself, and protect Mr. Neely,” Penny said last year. Let’s hope and pray at least one juror believes him.

  • Israel vows retaliation over attempted Netanyahu assassination: On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s home in Caesarea was the target of an attack by a drone launched from Lebanon by Hezbollah. Netanyahu was not at his residence at the time, and no one was injured. Hezbollah is a terrorist proxy organization funded and directed by Iran. Following the attack, Netanyahu didn’t parse words, stating, “The Iranian agents who tried to assassinate me and my wife today made a bitter mistake. This will not deter me or the State of Israel from continuing the war of revival against our enemies to ensure our security for generations.” He vowed, “We will continue to eliminate your terrorists. We will return our hostages held in Gaza. We will return our residents to the North. We will achieve all the war objectives that we set. And we will change the security reality in our region for generations.”

The Donald’s McDonald’s Run

Did Kamala Harris work at McDonald’s “flipping fries” in the 1980s? It’s one of the great mysteries of life still unsolved by the “fact-checkers,” though they’ve dutifully tried to ride to her aid. We do know, however, that Donald Trump worked at McDonald’s flipping fries — at least for a couple of hours this past weekend.

Our Douglas Andrews suspects Harris is lying, as he wrote back in September. The “fact-checkers” essentially take the total lack of evidence of her employment as proof that doubters are the ones making stuff up. “Donald Trump has claimed without evidence that Ms. Harris never worked at the fast-food chain,” The New York Times huffed yesterday. “Her campaign and a friend say she did.” Without evidence, by the way — including a 1987 résumé that conspicuously left it off.

(As an aside, “without evidence” has become one of the Leftmedia’s favorite phrases to smear Trump when they don’t like what he says but can’t really prove he’s wrong.)

All in all, it’s a silly debate. A McDonald’s franchise is unlikely to have saved employee records from 1983. Harris probably didn’t save those pay stubs, either. And whether she worked there is unlikely to have any meaningful impact on pretty much anything. So what?

The real question is whether people believe Harris is telling the truth. Given her own flip-flops and egregious lies, as well as the myriad autobiographical fabrications of her boss, Joe Biden, and her running mate, Tim Walz, it’s not an unreasonable suspicion. No one trusts the Leftmedia to report the facts, either. So what would otherwise be a totally inconsequential story about a minimum-wage job instead reveals a character problem for Harris.

As for Trump, he’s a showman. The videos and pictures of him wearing an apron over the white shirt and red tie, learning to operate the fryer, and waving from the drive-thru window of a Philadelphia-area McDonald’s were classic campaign moments. He certainly grilled and fried his opponent for her “phony” story of working for the fast-food chain, joking, “I’ve now worked for 15 minutes more than Kamala at McDonald’s.”

Then again, he also magnanimously wished Harris a “happy birthday” as she turned 60 on Sunday. Asked if he would get her some fries, he responded, “I think I’ll get her some flowers. Maybe I’ll get her some fries, you’re right. … I’ll get her a McDonald’s hamburger.”

Classic Trump.

The Leftmedia almost reported with almost palpable irritation that Trump’s visit was staged, though we’ve gotten in trouble with the “fact-checkers” for using that word before to describe things that were set up to ensure newsworthy pictures. “For security reasons,” said CNN’s Brian Stelter, “Trump’s McDonalds visit was carefully staged ahead of time, with drive-through customers selected and screened by Secret Service.” Likewise, NBC News wrote in its second paragraph, “The franchise in Feasterville was closed for normal business during Sunday’s photo op. The customers who went through the drive thru were pre-selected by the franchise and the local Trump campaign team, according to a person familiar with the event. The cars were also screened and searched, and the people in them were wanded down, according to the source.”

Yeah, the guy’s been shot at twice. Of course the Secret Service protected him.

“Wait are you telling me Trump isn’t actually an employee of McDonald’s???” a clearly gobsmacked Matt Walsh teased. “Massive scandal. I’m stunned.”

Harris is desperate to connect with voters with that phony “I grew up in a middle-class family” canard. Trump, of course, did not grow up middle class, but somehow, he finds it far easier to make the connection. He’s the blue-collar billionaire, and it drives Democrats nuts. (Short drive, I know.)

In fact, Trump left his shift at McDonald’s and headed to Pittsburgh for the Steelers-Jets NFL game Sunday evening. He visited the Alabama-Georgia game three weeks ago. At both venues, friendly crowds greeted him, and he egged on a “U-S-A! U-S-A!” chant last night. Is anyone that excited about Kamala Harris?

Navigating the Political and Cultural Winds

As the 2024 election cycle concludes, evidence of “campaign fatigue” rises.  Bombastic hyperbole abounds; draconian predications multiply about “losing democracy” or “never again having real elections,” or “they’re manipulating the weather against us.”  Lots of verbiage is spewed about politics, but little is focused on the culture that brews such political folderol.

Because TxC engages in cultural apologetics, the time is ripe to take a deep breath and step back from all the political pedanticism.  The next three Dicta editions will explore – calmly – the worldview implications spawned by the interface among culture, politics, and law.  Our approach will be using humor and pop culture, combined with serious ethical, legal, and political analysis.  Let’s get to the gist; but first a “word from our sponsors,” as the voice-over quips.

Understanding Culture: Hold My Beer?

Many of our “more experienced” aka, older, Dicta readers will recall this successful marketing campaign:

“Tastes great!!”  “Less filling!”

“TASTES GREAT!!”  “LESS FILLING!!”

TASTES GREAT!!!”  “LESS FILLING!!!”    

This “lite beer” ad campaign[1] captured the attention of the world, while pitching a new brewed product:  beer that contained less calories without sacrificing “real beer taste.”  As the tagline chimed: “All you want from a beer . . . and less.”  Here’s the marketing proposition:  Can beer actually taste good and yet lessen the advent of a beer belly?

Law (and politics) and culture can be viewed similarly: does law follow culture, or does law catalyze culture?  Or, can both propositions be true?  It just figures:  another beer commercial illustrates – and answers – this question.

A Man Walked into a Bar . . . “How ya Doin??!!”

The scene opens in a cozy, dark, not-so-new neighborhood pub that feels like Brooklyn or Queens; local characters press themselves to the bar and exchange greetings:  “How ya doin?”– to which they respond in kind, “How you doin?” And, so it goes.

Another guest arrives, dressed unlike the locals, wearing not a ballcap or watch cap, but a straw hat with an upturned brim, marking him without doubt as a hayseed coming from a flyover state.  He’s also greeted: “How ya doin?”  He smiles, looks up and gushes in a decidedly non-New York accent:

“Well, thanks for asking; I’m doing fine.  Just got in today. My brother-in-law picked me up at the airport, mighty big airport y’all got here, and the people here are so nice.”

The locals are aghast.  And as each new local greets the “new guy,” Mr. Hayseed responds similarly, to the point where the bar keeper with urgency hand signals that folks shouldn’t greet this strange fellow.[2]

The humor flows from the stark clash between two competing cultures which shape the operative social expectations and conventions.  To the neighborhood folks, “How ya doin” is an expected courteous acknowledgment of presence—and nothing more; the stranger, however, interprets the language literally as a seriously interested question and proceeds to answer it fully. In his view, courtesy requires providing a fulsome answer each time to each “inquirer.”  Hence the cognitive dissonance.  The cultures clash socially, but achieve detente as everyone orders the same American beer:  A Budweiser.[3]

“The Culture” or Cultures??

These episodes comedically illustrate a crucial point: though we often speak about “culture” and “the culture,” the reality is that society percolates with many cultures, dynamically interfacing, interacting, and impacting in a sort of stew.  What we label “the culture” actually consists of a multiplexity of cultures and cultural dynamics.  This stands to reason since the idolatry resulting from the truth being exchanged for the lie expresses itself in many forms.  And, this multiplexity influences, shapes, conveys, and cross-pollinates – all pre-politically, that is, before there’s legislation or formal law – our:

  • Expectations
    • Plausibility Narratives/Structures
    • Moral Imagination
    • Paradigms
    • Permissions and Boundaries

In other words, our law and politics do not write on a tabla rasa, a blank slate.[4]  Rather, these pre-political cultural currentsimpact how we think about, craft – and enact – law and politics.  Or, as the saying goes, “politics is downstream from culture.”  Why?

All these cultural currents feed into and shape “what counts” as facts, what frames what’s possible, and what’s conceptually permissive on multiple levels, including the positive law as we will see.  First, let’s consider a few non-legal cultural examples that illustrate this dynamic.

“Inconceivable!” – The Sicilian Philosopher Vizzini quipped[5]

Until 1954, running a sub-four-minute mile was conceptually impossible – “Inconceivable!”; it was a fantasy reserved for dreamers and science fiction.  Today, every world class male runner shatters that barrier as do most elite high school male competitors.[6]

Or consider free soloing, that is, climbing cliffs and rocks without the aid of ropes or other gear.  The Holy Grail of free soloing consists of the 3000+ foot sheer granite wall known as El Capitan, located in Yosemite National Park – No one had ever free soloed that wall and several had died trying; it was “Inconceivable!” – until June 3, 2017.[7]

Both of these feats were abstractly possible as in the inane shibboleth “anything’s possible,”[8] but certainly not in any realistic or plausible sense; the collective cultural imagination simply could not conceive of performing either feat; these feats were inconceivable.  Not today.  Why?

The cultural paradigm – not the track, nor the granite wall — had shifted.[9]  A similar dynamic occurs regarding law and society today, and we need to grasp this to fully appreciate – yet not over-appreciate – politics.  And, as the truth is exchanged for the lie, one consequence is that things done in secret that are “shameful even to speak about”[10] now become celebrated and become the centerpieces to our entertainment and politics – nudging things to now be not only conceivable but approved:  Will & Grace, Transsexualism, taxpayer funded abortion on demand,[11] same-sex “marriage,” and punishment for hiring and promoting the most qualified candidates instead of preferring “diverse” less qualified applicants based on their “gender identity”.[12]

Beyond the Letter of the Law!

“Law”[13] operating in culture is about, reflects, and implicates far more than the “black letter” of what’s been legislated or declared by courts or other political authorities.  Society includes mini-platoons, as Edmund Burke noted, that also define permissions, set expectations, and inform and enforce the “law” of Civil Society outside the “black letter” legal regime.  Civil Society “legislates and enforces” without recourse to law enforcement officers or agencies or other traditional “legal” mechanisms like prosecuting attorneys.  How so?

Martial Arts Culture & Law: Breaking Boards (or Bones)?

I competed in traditional Tae kwon-do for years, achieving the rank of second dan, Black Belt.  Part of every student’s training consisted of sparring practice, rotating among all the ranks, white belts (new beginners) to advanced Black Belts.  The positive “black letter” law governing sparring was clear: “No excessive physical contact.”

Sparring instead focused on and developed technique and control; power, however was developed punching bags and breaking boards, not persons.   But there was always “that guy,” the aggressive Brown Belt itching to be “considered worthy” to test for Black Belt. “That guy” would often thump lesser skilled students and sometimes hurt them, transgressing the dojang’s[14] “black letter” law.

The Black letter law’s existence, and then even the Master’s stern vocal republication, “Watch the excessive contact!” didn’t do the trick; that is, it didn’t retrain Mr. Aggressive.  Weaker students continued to get thumped.

The Master, however understood the cultural relationship between black letter law and the school’s civil society:  with subtle eye contact and a head nod, he alerted the sparring Black Belts of “that guy’s” misbehavior and noncompliance with the black letter law.  This wordless societal act – not the published black letter law – granted permission for the Black Belts to “enforce” the operative rule being repeatedly violated by “that guy.”  How?  By “permitting” the Black belts to drop Mr. Aggressive with a well-timed, penetrating powerful technique – in this case a full-power spinning back kick to the liver and his short ribs.   With Mr. Aggressive gasping for air while writhing and now sprawled on the mat, the Master intoned with a slight smile, “Watch the excessive contact” – this time sardonically directed to the Black belt enforcer.  Mr. Aggressive finally understood – and felt – the import of the positive law.

This story illustrates another key worldview and cultural point: it was not the black letter law itself, nor the Master’s authoritative verbal warning that achieved this result. Rather, it was the school’s culture that instantiated and enforced it – making it real via particular conduits and transmitters:  Black belt students.

The same dynamics apply to what is normally considered law: legislative actions and judicial declarations.  Accordingly, we dare not “do law” or politics without understanding and taking into account these dynamic and catalytic facets of society and culture – and the Fall.

Things get morally complex because after the Fall the truth is exchanged for the lie.[15]  Idolatrous practices now lurk in the culture and they push to be approved or affirmed[16] – by civil society as well as formal legal and political institutions.  Why?

Culture and Politics Cook the Legal Books

We often think law consists of the rules and statutes “on the books.”  In a sense, that is correct.  However, how culture “does” law and politics reveals that the political sausage contains many additional ingredients.  Put differently, law operating in culture consists of more than the “flat text.”[17]  Jurists, despite what they may contrarily assert, function this way as well. They too invoke more than the text of the law when making decisions.[18]   They often take cues from the pre-legal (and often idolatrous) cultural narratives that swirl around, under, and above the particular legal issue.

Consider how this looks.  The well-regarded and elegant pen of Justice Oliver Wendall Holmes illustrates the contours of culture and its plausibility narratives impacting the operation and application of law.  Here, Holmes, writing for the US Supreme Court, sets forth his analysis for determining whether involuntary sterilization – an overt eugenics initiative – passes constitutional muster.  His reliance on cultural matters in crafting the Court’s ruling is explicit:

We have seen more than once that the public welfare may call upon the best citizens for their lives. It would be strange if it could not call upon those who already sap the strength of the State for these lesser sacrifices, often not felt to be such by those concerned, in order to prevent our being swamped with incompetence. It is better for all the world if, instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime or to let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind. The principle that sustains compulsory vaccination is broad enough to cover cutting the Fallopian tubes. Jacobson v. Massachusetts, 197 U.S. ii. Three generations of imbeciles are enough.[19]

Notice how culture and cultural assumptions generate and inform his legal logic here—beyond the flat or bare statutory text at issue:  First, understand the writer’s context:  Holmes fought in the Civil War and was writing less than a decade after the gruesome Great War had ended – both were times of sacrifice, suffering, and bloodshed – times of great societal strain, drain, and pain.

Second, the Court, via Holmes, takes notice that factors of the common good – utilitarian outcomes[20] – should matter.  Society in general, and the State in particular should, where possible, work to minimize societal strain, drain, and pain.  The ideology of Social Darwinism underlies this sort of thinking.

Third, the Court asserts that some citizens “sap the strength of the State” causing new societal strain, drain, and pain, which in Holmes’s mind, signals the gist of the matter.  The question becomes how to remedy this harm.  And, in his mind, this means how the State – given his social Darwinian commitments – should remedy this harm.

Fourth, he predicts – speculates actually – using a utilitarian lens, that draconian harm will be caused by those who “sap the [State’s] strength”:  drastic crime deserving capital punishment and starvation due to their own alleged imbecility.[21]  Not a pretty or desired social portrait.  And not an iota of real evidence supporting his speculation.

Note: these first four factors stem not from statutory positive law, nor the constitution, but from other pre-political cultural cues.  With this context, Justice Holmes now brings a legal principle to work:

The principle that sustains compulsory vaccination is broad enough to cover cutting the Fallopian tubes.[22]

The Court, given this purported legal cover, thereby affirmed Virginia’s involuntary sterilization statute[23] because “Three generations of imbeciles are enough.”[24]  Case closed: law (and culture) have spoken decisively.

How was such a thing even conceivable in a free society??!! – no pun intended.  How?  Because culturally derived pre-legal and pre-political plausibility narratives set and thereby shaped the Court’s – and the extant culture’s – moral imagination.  That culturally brewed moral imagination countenanced Social Darwinism in general and eugenics in particular as being good and proper things for the State to promote and coercively impose.

The Court used the same methodology – this time for sustaining an actual good – when considering school desegregation in the 1950’s.  Justice Scalia describes how cultural matters impacted how the Court got “civil rights” right:

Most of the constitutionalizing of civil rightsthat the courts have effected in recent years has been at the margins of well-established and deeply held social beliefs.  Even Brown v. Board of Education [which ended school segregation] as significant a step as it might have seemed, was only an elaboration of the consequences of the nation’s deep belief in the equality of all persons before the law.[25]

These ethical moves – positive and negative – are thus not merely or solely legal.  The ambient culture informs and shapes them.  But there’s more.  It’s also not merely or solely legal and cultural.  From a worldview perspective, what’s actually happening is not simply cultural and legal, but rather reflects something theological:  some religion – whether faithful or idolatrous – is ultimately shaping the legal and political landscape and the culture’s moral imagination.  By what means or mechanism?  By those who proclaim or preach culturalhomilies.

The Preachers of Cultural Homilies

If Culture is “religion externalized,”[26] it matters WHO preaches the “Culture’s Homilies.” Cultural Icons – who’s the predominant Preacher – matters:

  • Dear Leader – North Korea
  • The Central Party – China
  • Fox News or CNN
  • The Nation or National Review
  • Or, legal institutions like SCOTUS . . .

In the West the predominant and enduring cultural and institutional icons – the Preachers – consist of the Robes of Culture – These robes consist of those institutions that traditionally and literally wear robes connoting authority[27]:

  • Jurists – The Legal Realm: Enforces norms
  • Clergy – The Religious Realm:  Absolves or Condemns actors
  • Professors – The Education Realm:  Defines norms[28]

These “Preachers” largely and predominantly shape and deliver cultural homilies, which then shape and structure culture’s plausibility narratives and moral imagination.  To the extent that these icons/Preachers listen to or imbibe the Lie’s idolatries, their cultural homilies will reinforce idolatrous ethics, law, and politics.

Robes inform within their disciplines, but because they are also attached at an iconic level to broader culture, they spawn impact beyond their disciplines. These icons mutually accelerate and catalyze the other icons circulating within the Culture – that is, they shape and deliver Cultural Homilies, which all the while press to approve cultural practices tethered to the ascendant cultural worship/religion.[29]  Accordingly, we ought to understand culture in order to better assess its preachers and their preaching.  Only then can we possess a full-orbed and informed view of law and politics.

What then is Culture?

We often speak of “low” culture or “high” culture:  Warhol or Rembrandt; Taylor Swift or Beverly Sills; James Patterson or Tom Wolfe.  Yet, what IS culture?

The question is actually a fairly recent one and the answer gets murky quickly.  There’s a lot of recent scholarship and the topic is nuanced and complicated.[30]  For present purposes, however, there is no need to probe the depths of these recent studies.  Rather it suffices to note that “creation” is what God does and “culture” is what mankind does.[31]

And, since mankind is created by God, mankind is inherently religious.  This means in part that the culture mankind produces is likewise inherently religious and cannot at bottom be neutral as to morality or religion.  In fact, at some level every cultural manifestation reflects either the worship of the Creator or the worship of the creation; either the truth is echoed – or the lie is etched – culturally.

Culture also includes the ideas produced by mankind.  While ideas do have consequences, bad ideas have victims.[32]  Yet, ideas, while cultural, require conduits, champions, and translators; they do not act alone, as Kevin Vanhoozer notes:

“Ideas do not make their way in history except they be carried by persons and institutions.”[33]

Consequently, we also need to probe and understand the mechanisms and impact of their popularizing transmitters – a task for the next Dicta edition, replete with pictures for you visual learners.  We will consider Alfred Kinsey, Hugh Hefner, John Graham Chambers, Muhammad Ali, James Naismith, LeBron James, Doritos, Target, The Gap, Burger King, Walmart, et al. Stay tuned, but better yet, stay attuned.
