NOVEMBER 1 | GOD HAS FEW ADMIRERS AMONG CHRISTIANS TODAY

…He that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

1 JOHN 4:16

To love God because He has been good to us is one of the most reasonable things possible but the quality of our worship is stepped up as we move away from the thought of what God has done for us and nearer the thought of the excellence of His holy nature.

This leads us to admiration!

The dictionary says that to admire is “to regard with wondering esteem accompanied by pleasure and delight; to look at or upon with an elevated feeling of pleasure.”

According to this definition, God has few admirers among Christians today.

Many are they who are grateful for His goodness in providing salvation. Testimony meetings are mostly devoted to recitations of incidents where someone got into trouble and got out again in answer to prayer. It is good and right to render unto God thanksgiving for all His mercies to us. But God’s admirers—where are they?

The simple truth is that worship is elementary until it begins to take on the quality of admiration!

Just as long as the worshiper is engrossed with himself and his good fortune, he is a babe. We begin to grow up when our worship passes from thanksgiving to admiration. As our hearts rise to God in lofty esteem for that which He is, we begin to share a little of the selfless pleasure which is a portion of the blessed in heaven!1

Evening, November 1 | “And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away: so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”—Matthew 24:39

Universal was the doom, neither rich nor poor escaped: the learned and the illiterate, the admired and the abhorred, the religious and the profane, the old and the young, all sank in one common ruin. Some had doubtless ridiculed the patriarch—where now their merry jests? Others had threatened him for his zeal which they counted madness—where now their boastings and hard speeches? The critic who judged the old man’s work is drowned in the same sea which covers his sneering companions. Those who spoke patronizingly of the good man’s fidelity to his convictions, but shared not in them, have sunk to rise no more, and the workers who for pay helped to build the wondrous ark, are all lost also. The flood swept them all away, and made no single exception. Even so, out of Christ, final destruction is sure to every man of woman born; no rank, possession, or character, shall suffice to save a single soul who has not believed in the Lord Jesus. My soul, behold this wide-spread judgment and tremble at it.

How marvellous the general apathy! they were all eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, till the awful morning dawned. There was not one wise man upon earth out of the ark. Folly duped the whole race, folly as to self-preservation—the most foolish of all follies. Folly in doubting the most true God—the most malignant of fooleries. Strange, my soul, is it not? All men are negligent of their souls till grace gives them reason, then they leave their madness and act like rational beings, but not till then.

All, blessed be God, were safe in the ark, no ruin entered there. From the huge elephant down to the tiny mouse all were safe. The timid hare was equally secure with the courageous lion, the helpless cony as safe as the laborious ox. All are safe in Jesus. My soul, art thou in him?1

November 1.—Evening. [Or September 1.] | “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

Acts 12:1–19

NOW about that time Herod the king (the grandson of Herod the Great) stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. (Troubles seldom come alone; first the famine, then persecution; the church can endure all things.)

And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter (or rather after the Passover) to bring him forth to the people.

Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. (What a blessed “but”! Constant guards were baffled by constant prayer. Some would have said, “what can prayer do?” but the early church was not afflicted with such scepticism; they prayed on, and Herod was foiled.)

6, 7 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. (The Lord’s deliverances are complete ones; Peter must not leave a shoe or a garment in prison, he is to come out with all that he took in.)

And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.

10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying. (He knew where the brethren prayed, and expected to find them there, and so he did. If he were to come now would he find church members at prayer-meetings? Alas, many of them never go to what they wickedly call “only a prayer-meeting.”)

13, 14 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda (or Rose). And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.

15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel. (If God wishes to surprise his people he has only to answer their prayers, such is their unbelief.)

16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James (the Lord’s brother), and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place. (This is a notable instance of the power of supplication, and those who will but try it will find prayer to be as mighty as ever.)

18, 19 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter. And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death.

Wrestling prayer can wonders do,

Bring relief in deepest straits,

Prayer can force a passage through

Iron bars and brazen gates.

For the wonders God has wrought,

Let us now our praises give:

And, by sweet experience taught,

Call upon him while we live.1

November 1 Evening Verse of the Day

17:17. Some see the two lines of this proverb as antithetical; that is, it is better to have a brother than a friend in times of real adversity. But the two hardly need compete. Anyone who truly loves us—friend or family—does so at all times, including the hard times. “The saying does not identify true love with family relationships as such but, more generally, with constancy in difficult times” (Clifford, Proverbs, 166).1

17:17. Some Bible translations make a contrast in this verse between a friend and a brother by beginning the second line with “but.” The NIV‘s and seems preferable; it conveys the idea that both the friend and the brother are valued. However, in 18:24 a friend is extolled above a brother (relative). True friends-and relatives-are faithful in times of adversity as well as prosperity.2

17:17 A true friend loves in adversity as well as in prosperity. Often it takes hard times to show which friends are genuinely loyal. A quaint note from D. L. Moody’s Bible says, “A true friend is like ivy—the greater the ruin, the closer he clings.”

A brother is born for adversity, that is, one of the great privileges of brotherhood is to be at your side when you need him most.

It is not hard to find the Lord Jesus in this verse.

There’s not an hour that He is not near us,

No, not one! No, not one!

No night so dark but His love can cheer us,

No, not one! No, not one!

—Johnson Oatman3

17:17 The difference between a friend and brother is noted here. A true friend is a constant source of love, while a brother in one’s family may not be close, but is drawn near to help in trouble. Friends are closer than brothers because they are available all the time, not just in the crisis. Cf. 18:24.4

November 3 – The Cult of Tammuz | VCY

TODAY’S BIBLE READING CHALLENGE:
  Ezekiel 7:1-9:11
  Hebrews 5:1-14
  Psalm 105:1-15
  Proverbs 26:28

Ezekiel 7:19 — ”Their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD.” Money can buy many things, but it can’t buy protection from God’s wrath!

Ezekiel 7:24 — I talked to someone who said “I’m okay with God judging me. He’s God after all. But Him using others to judge me, that’s harder to swallow.” But as we see in Ezekiel, that’s exactly what God uses: “the worst of the heathen” to judge us!

Ezekiel 8:14 — Tammuz wasn’t a suffering sister but an ancient Mesopotamian god of shepherds. Responsible for fertility and crops growing, Tammuz death was mourned every year, marking the rotation of seasons. On the Arabic calendar, Tammuz is the name of the month of July. During the month his death and resurrection were celebrated. His consort was the “Queen of Heaven,” Ishtar (Jeremiah 7:18, Jeremiah 44:17-25), who was worshiped with cake offerings. The cult of Tammuz survived until the 1700’s AD.

Ezekiel 8:16 — Inside the house of the LORD, at the very altar of the LORD, twenty-five men have turned their backs on the Temple and are worshiping the sunrise and not the creator of the sun.

Ezekiel 9:4 — God marks His people throughout different times:

  • Past – Exodus 12:13
  • Present – 2 Corinthians 1:22
  • Future – Revelation 7:3

Ezekiel 9:10 — This is the 5th time we see the expression, “no pity.” Judgment time is coming and fake repentance will not get you out of Judgement Day.

Hebrews 5:6 — The mystery of Psalm 110:4 is solved! Who was the LORD talking to that is a “priest forever?” Who is the coming King (Psalm 110:1)? This is the Son of God, Jesus the Messiah!

Hebrews 5:8 — God learned from suffering. The omnipotent Creator of the World learned obedience from suffering. My mind struggles to grasp that. And before we can go on to more incredible truths, we are reminded that we should be further down the road (Hebrews 5:12).

Psalm 105:5 — In this psalm we see not an emphasis on the Word of God (Psalm 119), but on the works of God. The works are proof that He remembered His covenant (Psalm 105:8).

Psalm 105:8 — How long is a thousand generations? By some estimates we’re only 150 generations from Adam and Eve. God’s faithfulness extends farther and wider than we can imagine!

Proverbs 26:28 — Be careful with your tongue!

Rest on a Promise | VCY

The land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it.Genesis 28:13

No promise is of private interpretation: it belongs not to one saint but to all believers. If, my brother, thou canst in faith lie down upon a promise and take thy rest thereon, it is thine. Where Jacob “lighted” and tarried and rested, there he took possession. Stretching his weary length upon the ground, with the stones of that place for his pillows, he little fancied that he was thus entering into ownership of the land; yet so it was. He saw in his dream that wondrous ladder which for all true believers unites earth and heaven, and surely where the foot of the ladder stood he must have a right to the soil, for otherwise he could not reach the divine stairway. All the promises of God are “Yea” and “Amen” in Christ Jesus, and as He is ours, every promise is ours if we will but lie down upon it in restful faith.

Come, weary one, use thy Lord’s words as thy pillows, Lie down in peace. Dream only of Him. Jesus is thy ladder of light. See the angels coming and going upon Him between thy soul and thy God, and be sure that the promise is thine own God-given portion and that it will not be robbery for thee to take it to thyself, as spoken specially to thee.

How to Make a Moral Decision

WRETCHED TV episode 2474

In this episode of “Wretched,” Todd Friel discusses the importance of making moral decisions in life, emphasizing that every choice we make has ethical implications. He outlines six steps for decision-making: pray for wisdom, read the Bible, seek counsel from godly individuals, consider personal preferences, interrogate oneself about motives, and finally, make a decision. He encourages viewers to trust that God can handle any situation and to remember that moral considerations should guide every choice, regardless of its apparent significance.

Ignorance; Prejudice and Fog in the Mind | From the MLJ Archive on Oneplace.com

download(size: 0 MB )
1 Timothy 1:12-13 — Why do some people reject Christ? The truth of the gospel seems so sure, and yet many still turn from it. Why? In this sermon on 1 Timothy 1:12–13 titled “Ignorance: Prejudice and Fog in the Mind,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones takes to Scripture to explain why people reject the gospel. One of the greatest missionaries of all time was the apostle Paul. Yet in 1 Timothy 1:12–13, he makes a startling admission—he had at one point been a great blasphemer of God and persecutor of Christians. And yet, God eventually saved him. People today say that they are not Christians because of their high intellect— they say that Christianity is for the weak-minded, and that they do not need it since they have a high intellectual understanding. Yet, many great Christians throughout history have shown this to be false simply because they were of towering intellect themselves. Augustine and Paul himself are just two out of a vast number of those who were brilliant and yet followed Jesus. Paul writes that the real reason for rejection is unbelief and ignorance that bring prejudice against the gospel and blind people to its truths. What exactly is this unbelief and ignorance about? Listen as Dr. Lloyd-Jones explains the real reason for unbelief and how Christians can effectively engage it today.

Liberal Media Turns On David Platt

“Our character ultimately defines us, and the evidence presented suggests a troubling disconnect between public persona and private conduct.”

(Ray Fava – Evangelical Dark Web) The Real David Platt has made a much larger impact than it would appear. Despite obscure distribution, the documentary is reaching a wide reach. Evidently, David Platt’s Radical rehash was part of a broader media campaign to deflect bad publicity with good. And a liberal media outlet would expose that David Platt and company were working to undercut the documentary.

Baptist News Global is a liberal with pro-abortion and pro-gay sex drug funding proponents writing articles, so naturally, David Platt thought they would be a safe outlet for a softball interview. But instead, a stunning act of journalism occurred. Maina Mwaura wrote an article titled, “Understanding the David Platt story.” View article →

Nation Anxiously Waits To See Which Side Will Be Denying Election Results | Babylon Bee

Article Image

U.S. — With Americans participating in early voting in record numbers and millions more preparing to head to the polls on Tuesday, the nation anxiously waited to see which side would be denying election results.

Though the country remained deeply divided on a wide range of issues, Americans from across the political spectrum were eager to see which party would be left refusing to accept the outcome of the hotly contested presidential race.

“It’s so suspenseful not to know which side will reject the new president,” said Fox News political commentator Brit Hume. “It’s the most exciting part of every presidential election now, waiting to see which side will say the election was rigged and stolen. Will it be Russia’s fault? The Dominion voting machines? Republicans suppressing urban voters? Democrats illegally stuffing ballot drop boxes? We’re all waiting with bated breath to find out next week.”

In what has become one of the nation’s most beloved traditions, families made plans to gather around the television on Tuesday night to learn which party would launch a crusade to accuse the other side of cheating. “It’s part of the fabric of America,” said voter David Megli. “I can’t wait to wake up early Wednesday morning, run downstairs with my kids, and see what fresh political chaos was left for us overnight. It’s as American as baseball, apple pie, and hating Canada.”

At publishing time, crowds of election denial enthusiasts had already begun gathering outside the Supreme Court for the inevitable election challenges.
