Martin Luther on Preparing to Die | The Log College

SEPTEMBER 2025; TABLETALK MAGAZINE by Stéphane Simonnin

;A few years ago, I received this unexpected request from one of my church members with multiple sclerosis: “When you have time, could you please do a Bible study on how to prepare for death?” This person knew that her condition was incurable and, although death still seemed a fairly long way off, she was anxious to receive advice on how to face it. I was taken aback by that request, but I should not have been. This was a very sensible idea. Why wouldn’t every church member be interested in such a Bible study? Yet, I could not remember the last time I preached or heard a sermon on that topic. The Bible is very upfront about the reality of death but also very clear that it is possible to die well. It is perhaps significant that one of the best-known Hebrew words in the Old Testament, the word shalom, which we associate with peace and well-being, first appears in the context of death (Gen. 15:15). Knowing how we may die “in peace” should be an important concern for us all.

As I reflected on this, I was struck again about how common that theme was in Christian sermons and devotional literature until about two hundred years ago. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, decisive breakthroughs in medical research, such as the discovery of germs and anesthetics, made death and pain feel more distant. For the first time in history, being healthy became the norm and being ill the exception. For most people in history, death was an ever-present companion. John Calvin, for example, gives a vivid description of how precarious life felt in his time:

Innumerable are the ills which beset human life, and present death in as many different forms. Not to go beyond ourselves, since the body is a receptacle, even the nurse, of a thousand diseases, a man cannot move without carrying along with him many forms of destruction. . . . Then, in what direction soever you turn, all surrounding objects not only may do harm, but almost openly threaten and seem to present immediate death. Go on board a ship, you are but a plank’s breadth from death. Mount a horse, the stumbling of a foot endangers your life. Walk along the streets, every tile upon the roofs is a source of danger . . . I say nothing of poison, treachery, robbery, some of which beset us at home, others follow us abroad.1

It is therefore not surprising that Christians felt the need to be trained in the ars moriendi (art of dying). In fact, the idea that the whole of life is a preparation to die was commonplace. As events in the world sometimes bring death considerably closer to us, I believe it is urgent for the church to recover the Christian ars moriendi. What we need in particular is not so much rehearsing general theological truths about death but precisely what that church member asked me: some practical advice on how to prepare ourselves for it. The Protestant Reformers and seventeenth-century Puritans can help us with this because they knew how to face death and how to think about it in concrete terms. They wrote a great deal on the topic but, for the sake of brevity, I will focus on Martin Luther, whose teaching on the matter sums up the Protestant ars moriendi.2

First, Luther recognizes that death is frightening even for Christians.

SHARE

Luther’s view of the Christian life is attractive because of its concrete character. Luther was not simply a theologian of more abstract concepts such as justification but a pastor who preached and wrote to human beings of flesh and blood facing much hardship and who were never far away from death. Luther himself, like his contemporaries, did not expect to live for very long, and he thought he would soon die from illness or martyrdom. It is therefore not surprising that he preached and wrote about death throughout his life. As early as 1519, when he was only thirty-six, he wrote a series of exhortations for his sovereign, Elector Frederick the Wise, who was seriously ill.3 In that same year, he preached a famous sermon on preparing to die, and he no doubt preached many times on the subject. Practical considerations about dying are spread through his writings. We also have fairly precise information about Luther’s last days and his own death that allows us to know that he put into practice what he preached.

Luther can help us because he teaches us how to think properly about death both throughout our lives and when it is near. His insights can be summed up under four headings.

BE CONFIDENT BUT REALISTIC

First, Luther recognizes that death is frightening even for Christians. He is not so foolish as to believe that the fear of death can be neutralized by stoic fortitude, as certain atheists try to convince themselves. This is a conviction that is often found in his writings. For example, in a sermon on 1 Corinthians 15 preached on October 6, 1532, he says: “The heathens have wisely said ‘he is a fool who is afraid of death, for through such fear he loses his own life.’ This would be true if only a man could act on the advice. . . . They advise that nothing is better than simply cast all such fear aside, to rid the mind of it and to think: why worry about it? When we are dead, we are dead. That is certainly disposing of the matter in short order and completely extinguishing God’s wrath, hell and damnation!”4

Or again, in one of his table talks: “I do not like to see people glad to die. . . . Great saints do not like to die. The fear of death is natural, for death is a penalty; therefore, it is something sad. According to the spirit one gladly dies; but according to the flesh, it is said ‘another shall carry you where you would not.’ ”5

Yet, because Christ defeated death, Luther also knows that the death of a Christian is fundamentally different. As he says to Frederick the Wise in one of his fourteen consolations: “The death of a Christian is to be looked upon as the brazen serpent of Moses. It does have the appearance of a serpent; but it is entirely without life, without motion, without poison, without sting. . . . We do resemble those who die, and the outward appearance of our death is not different from that of others. But the thing itself is different nevertheless because for us death is dead.”6

This is why the Christian is able to prepare for death in a meaningful way. However, this preparation should take place throughout the whole of life, and this leads to Luther’s next insight.

THINK OF DEATH AT THE RIGHT TIME

This is perhaps the most insightful piece of advice and the most challenging for us today. The issue is not simply how to think about death but when. Luther’s oft-repeated advice is that we should familiarize ourselves with death while we are still healthy, while death itself still seems far away. Conversely, we should not stare at death when it is near us but rather focus on Christ. Now it is clear that most people today—sadly, including many Christians—do precisely the opposite. They studiously ignore death while healthy and are caught unprepared when it comes.

Because Christ defeated death, Luther also knows that the death of a Christian is fundamentally different.

SHARE

On the contrary, Luther understood that spiritual growth is a slow process that takes a lifetime and that facing death is something that has to be learned. This is why he encourages us to think often of our own mortality, to reflect on its cause and consequences and on its ultimate outcome for the Christian—the resurrection of the body. One interesting suggestion on how to do that is to meditate on our own death and when we pass cemeteries. In another sermon on 1 Corinthians 15—a fruitful chapter for reflections on death—Luther expands on the subject:

We must henceforth learn a new language and speech in talking of death and the grave when we die. It should not be called dying but being sown for the coming summer and that the churchyard or burial mound is not a mound of dead bodies but an acre full of grain, called God’s grain, which is to sprout again. . . . So then, when I see my father, mother, child or friend buried and lie under the ground, I, as a Christian, should not say ‘there lies a foul, decayed carcass or corpse, but: there lies my dear father, mother, child or friend; and today or tomorrow I shall lie there with them. What are they? Pure kernels of grain which will grow immortal and imperishable.7

This is a wise piece of advice but one that is hard to follow nowadays since everything has been done to hide death away. Once upon a time, graveyards would be located around churches so that everybody would pass them every Sunday. One can imagine that worshiping the Lord in a building surrounded by the graves of family members and friends would have helped people focus their minds on what they were doing and would have provided a concrete symbol of the union between the church militant here below and the church triumphant. Now, however, cemeteries and crematoria are hidden away, and this deprives us of an important opportunity for spiritual reflections. Nonetheless, we should make a point of thinking about death regularly and remind ourselves of the reasons that its sting has been taken away.

On the other hand, we should not focus on death when it is close but rather should focus on Christ. This is because a large part of the terror of death comes from the awareness of our sins and our guilt before God. The unbeliever has no alternative but to hope that there is no God on the other side to judge him. The Christian, though, has a different kind of certainty, and he can focus on Christ rather than on his sin. Luther explains in his famous 1519 sermon on preparing to die:

On our deathbed, it is neither fitting nor timely to brood over our sins; this we should do while we are living. But thus, the Evil Spirit turns everything upside down for us. While we are living and ought to have the picture of death, sin and hell constantly before our eyes he closes our eyes for us and hides these pictures. At death, when we should have only life, grace and salvation before our eyes, he opens our eyes for us first of all and then frightens us with untimely pictures to keep us from seeing the proper ones.8

This focus on “life, grace, and salvation” in Christ at death takes several forms. A practical and spiritual preparation and a focus on the means of grace.

PREPARE TO TAKE LEAVE MATERIALLY AND SPIRITUALLY

Luther, like all Christian authors at that time, teaches that one important task Christians face at death is to put their own affairs in order, as far as possible, to make things easier for their loved ones: “First, since death marks a farewell from this world and all its activities, it is necessary that a man regulate his temporal goods properly or as he wishes to have them ordered, lest after his death there be occasion for squabbles, quarrels, or other misunderstanding among his surviving friends. This pertains to the physical or external departure from this world and to the surrender of our possessions.”9

Luther understood that spiritual growth is a slow process that takes a lifetime and that facing death is something that has to be learned.

SHARE

Again, this is a challenging thought. Many people fail to do this and leave their family in a predicament simply because they cannot face the prospect of their own death. Therefore, putting our affairs in order is both a sign of faith (we can face death because we know where we are going) and of submission to Christ (we want to care not just about our own interests but also about the interests of others; Phil. 2:4).

Second, we must put our spiritual affairs in order, and an essential part of that is forgiving and asking forgiveness as far as possible: “Second, we must also take leave spiritually. That is, we must cheerfully and sincerely forgive, for God’s sake, all men who have offended us. At the same time, we must also, for God’s sake, earnestly seek the forgiveness of all the people whom we undoubtedly have greatly offended by setting them a bad example or by bestowing too few of the kindnesses demanded by the law of Christian brotherly love. This is necessary lest the soul remain burdened by its actions here on earth.”10

Luther takes Paul’s teaching seriously: “The sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law.” (1 Cor. 15:56). If, as Luther says, nothing is more important than focusing our minds on Christ when death is near, it is essential to seek forgiveness and forgive others because guilt is a powerful obstacle to a good death.

Then, the most important thing to do is focus our attention on the perfect sacrifice and righteousness of Christ and grasp the certainty of salvation that we have in Him. This can be done through prayerfully using the ordinary means of grace that the Lord has given His people to help them live and therefore to help them die as well. This includes appropriating the truths and promises we find in God’s Word: “Gaze at the heavenly picture of Christ, who descended into hell for your sake and was forsaken by God as one eternally damned when he spoke the words on the cross, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ In that picture your hell is defeated and your uncertain election is made sure. . . . Seek yourself only in Christ, and not in yourself, and you will find yourself in him eternally.”11

HANG ON TO THE SACRAMENTS

For Luther, the sacraments always were of fundamental importance in sustaining his faith, and he encourages Christians to draw comfort from them in the face of death. This is perhaps the piece of advice that sounds most alien to our ears because contemporary evangelicals, whatever their denomination, do not share Luther’s view of the sacraments. Yet, despite the theological gap between us and Luther on this point, we can learn something from him. Thus, Luther memorably defines the meaning of the sacraments at the end of his sermon on preparing to die, “God wants the sacraments to be a sign and testimony that Christ’s life has taken your death, his obedience your sin, his love your hell and overcome them.”12

The sacraments teach us the absolutely objective value of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, a value that does not depend in the least on our own worthiness or even our own understanding but which can be appropriated by faith:

It [the sign] points to Christ and his image, enabling you to say when faced by the image of death, sin, and hell, “God promised and, in his sacraments, he gave me a sure sign of his grace that Christ’s life overcame my death in his death, that his obedience blotted out my sin in his suffering, that his love destroyed my hell in his forsakenness. This sign and promise of my salvation will not lie to me or deceive me. It is God who has promised it, and he cannot lie either in words or in deeds.” He who thus insists and relies on the sacraments will find that his election and predestination will turn out well without his worry and effort.13

This is surely one of the main accomplishments of the Protestant Reformation: the realization that those signs—be it the waters of baptism or the bread and wine of the Lord’s Supper—are not so much a sacramental mechanism to make salvation possible but the concrete representation of what Christ has accomplished for us to give us the certainty of our salvation throughout our lives and, most importantly, at the point of death.

Putting our affairs in order is both a sign of faith and of submission to Christ.

Luther concludes his sermon: “We ought to thank him with a joyful heart for showing us such wonderful, rich, and immeasurable grace and mercy against death, hell, and sin, and to laud and love his grace rather than fearing death so greatly. Love and praise make dying very much easier, as God tells us through Isaiah, ‘For the sake of my praise I restrain my wrath for you, that I may not cut you off.’ To that end may God help us. Amen.”14

LUTHER’S OWN DEATH

As I said at the beginning, we know enough about Luther’s death to know that he was able to get that peace and certainty that he preached about. There are numerous reports and accounts of Luther’s death, but the most important eyewitness accounts historically are those left by Luther’s friend Justus Jonas and Michael Coelius, a preacher from Mansfeld. Jonas and Coelius left detailed accounts of Luther’s last moments because they realized that the way Luther died had enormous significance for the future of the Reformation. Many people at the time, especially his enemies, were convinced that the way he faced death would reveal whether he was sent by God or the devil. The honesty of Jonas and Coelius’ account of Luther’s pain and fear is all the more remarkable. I will not retell the story in detail, as it has been told many times before, and readers who want to know more about it may start with Stephen Nichols’ article “Martin Luther’s Death and Legacy.”15 However, a few details are worth mentioning in relation to what Luther taught about preparing to die.

He died on February 18, 1546, age sixty-two, in difficult circumstances. Sadly, he was away on pastoral business, far from his beloved wife and family. From what can be ascertained, he died from an attack of angina pectoris. He had been plagued with numerous health problems throughout his life and, more than once in the previous years, he thought he was about to die from a heart attack or kidney stones. He suffered from an attack of severe chest pain from late evening until the middle of the night, and Jonas and Coelius do not hide in their account that, as Luther was lying sweating he was seized with the fear of death. However, he managed to control himself and commend his “little soul” to Christ, affirming his conviction that death could not snatch him away from God’s hand. Echoing the words of Simeon, he said, “Lord, now let your servant depart in peace.” Finally, he repeated three times Psalm 31:5 (“Lord to you I commit my spirit”), a commonly used verse for funerals, and he became silent. Then he lost consciousness and his friends were unable to revive him. Jonas and Coelius shouted, “Reverend father, are you ready to die trusting in your Lord Jesus Christ and to confess the doctrine you have taught in His name?” Luther uttered a distinct “Yes!” After this, he responded no more.

Luther’s death was a vindication of his teaching. He showed that, as he had always taught, death was a painful and frightening process, but it could be overcome in Christ. May the Lord help us to prepare ourselves so that we may be ready to answer a distinct “Yes!” to that same question when the time comes.

Acknowledge the Great Evil of Sin, its Unprofitableness and Deceitfulness

Matthew Henry’s “Method For Prayer”

Confession 2.13 | ESV

The unprofitableness of sin.

I have sinned and perverted what was right, and it did not profit me. Job 33:27(KJV)

What fruit am I getting from the things of which I am now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. Romans 6:21(ESV) And what am I profited if I should gain the whole world and forfeit my own soul? Matthew 16:26(ESV)

The deceitfulness of sin.

Sin has deceived me, and through the commandment killed me; Romans 7:11(ESV) for my heart has been hardened by the deceitfulness of sin, Hebrews 3:13(ESV) and I have been lured and enticed by my own desire. James 1:14(ESV)

It has promised me freedom, but has made me the slave of corruption; 2 Peter 2:19(ESV) has promised me that I shall not surely die and that I shall be like God, Genesis 3:4-5(ESV) but it has flattered me and spread a net for my feet. Proverbs 29:5(ESV)

The pride of my heart, particularly, has deceived me. Obadiah 1:3(ESV)

Devotional for September 19, 2025 | Friday: Providing for the Temple

Completion of the Wall

Nehemiah 6:15-7:73 In this week’s studies, we see how Nehemiah responded when the wall was finally completed.

Theme

Providing for the Temple

The final action taken by Nehemiah in his attempt to consolidate his earlier work and prepare for the tasks to come was to provide for those who would now be working in the temple. We find this in the last verses of the chapter. “Some of the heads of the families contributed to the work. The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 drachmas of gold, 50 bowls and 530 garments for priests. Some of the heads of the families gave to the treasury for the work 20,000 drachmas of gold and 2,200 minas of silver. The total given by the rest of the people was 20,000 drachmas of gold, 2,000 minas of silver and 67 garments for priests” (vv. 70-72).

The chapter ends by noting, “The priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers and the temple servants, along with certain of the people and the rest of the Israelites, settled in their own towns” (v. 73). We know that a number of the wealthier Jewish families were teamed up with Tobiah, since Nehemiah says so. They would be hostile to Nehemiah’s plans and reforms. But in fairness to the rich, it needs to be noted that not all were opposed to Nehemiah. Otherwise, where would the considerable wealth mentioned in verses 70-72 have come from? It is hard to evaluate the true purchasing power of sums of ancient money. But if the notes in the New International Version are correct—they represent only the best judgment of scholars—the families of Israel gave gold and silver worth, in today’s currency, more than five million dollars. That made a considerable endowment for the temple service.

And Nehemiah’s care to provide it shows that, although he was a layman, he cared not only for secular matters but for the spiritual well-being of the people too. In fact, this is what follows in the second half of his memoir. What do we see about Nehemiah at this point? We have already seen many great traits of leadership. Here we see four more. First, he realized the need for new leaders and worked to seek out and appoint them. Second, he knew that these new leaders nevertheless needed clear and proper guidelines to be effective. Although he was delegating the work, he was still in charge. Third, he knew that God’s work must be supported financially. Finally, he also knew that:

Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain.

Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain (Psalm 127:1).

It is a lesson every true leader needs to learn, for his personal life and for what he seeks to accomplish.

Study Questions

  1. What was the final action Nehemiah performed?
  2. What are the other leadership traits we see?

Bunyan’s Thoughts on the Joys of Heaven | The Reformed Reader Blog

Here are some of John Bunyan’s dying sayings about the joys of heaven. It is good for us to think about heaven, where we’ll be with Christ. It’s good for us to set our minds on him above. Let Bunyan’s words help you think about your home in heaven with your Savior.

There is no good in this life but what is mingled with some evil; honors perplex, riches disquiet, and pleasures ruin health. But in heaven we shall find blessings in their purity, without any ingredient to embitter, with everything to sweeten them.

Oh, who is able to conceive the inexpressible, inconceivable joys that are there? None but they who have tasted of them. Lord, help us to put such a value upon them here, that in order to prepare ourselves for them, we may be willing to forego the loss of all those deceiving pleasures here.

How will the heavens echo of joy, when the Bride, the Lamb’s wife, shall come to dwell with her husband forever?

Christ is the desire of nations, the joy of angels, the delight of the Father; what solace then must that soul be filled with, that hath the possession of him to all eternity?

Is there not a time coming when the godly may ask the wicked what profit they have in their pleasure? What comfort in their greatness? And what fruits in all their labour?

If you would be better satisfied what the beatifical vision means, my request is that you would live holily, and go and see.

Friday’s Psalm: ‘O Lord my God, in thee do I put my trust’ | Morning Studies

O Lord my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me:

Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver.

O Lord my God, If I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands;

If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause is mine enemy:)

Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust. Selah.

Arise, O Lord, in thine anger, lift up thyself because of the rage of mine enemies: and awake for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded.

So shall the congregation of the people compass thee about: for their sakes therefore return thou on high.

The Lord shall judge the people: judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me.

Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.

My defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart.

God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.

If he turn not, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it ready.

He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; he ordaineth his arrows against the persecutors.

Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.

He made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made.

His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate.

I will praise the Lord according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the Lord most high.

September 19 Evening Verse of the Day

3:14 “I AM WHO I AM” is a very literal rendering of the Hebrew text, expressing God’s real, perfect, unconditional, independent existence. God exists in a way that no one and nothing else does. He is without beginning or end. He is the only Being who is self-existent. All other existence is dependent upon His uncaused existence. Jesus is this same God (cf. John 8:58; Col. 1:15–17; Heb. 13:8; Rev. 1:8). God is not the abstract being of Greek philosophy; rather He is the active, infinite, personal Being who reveals Himself as Redeemer and covenant-making Lord. He can only be defined in terms of Himself, but He is revealed by what He says and what He does (cf. Is. 45:5–7, 18–25). God’s name surely includes the idea of His continuing presence (cf. v. 12). The whole content of biblical history is a commentary on the meaning of this name (cf. Gen. 2:4, note).

3:14 I AM WHO I AM. The Lord is not defined or determined by any other than Himself. As the self-existent One, His promise is sure; He will reveal Himself in His saving deeds.

3:14 I am that I am The revelation of the personal name of God—Israel’s Creator (Exod 3:15). In Hebrew, the phrase “I am” is ehyeh—a different spelling from yhwh (“Yahweh”). The relationship between ehyeh and yhwh (called the Tetragrammaton) is not entirely clear, but both involve the consonants y and h in the same order and yhwh is used throughout this passage, indicating that both are names for the God of Israel (e.g., vv. 4, 7, 15, 16). It seems that the spelling of yhwh recalls the revelation here.

3:14 I am who I am. In response to Moses’ question (“What is [your] name?” v. 13), God reveals his name to be “Yahweh” (corresponding to the four Hebrew consonants YHWH). The three occurrences of “I AM” in v. 14 all represent forms of the Hebrew verb that means “to be” (Hb. hayah), and in each case are related to the divine name Yahweh (i.e., “the LORD”; see note on v. 15). The divine name Yahweh has suggested to scholars a range of likely nuances of meaning: (1) that God is self-existent and therefore not dependent on anything else for his own existence; (2) that God is the creator and sustainer of all that exists; (3) that God is immutable in his being and character and thus is not in the process of becoming something different from what he is (e.g., “the same yesterday and today and forever,” Heb. 13:8); and (4) that God is eternal in his existence. While each of these points is true of God, the main focus in this passage is on the Lord’s promise to be with Moses and his people. The word translated “I am” (Hb. ’ehyeh) can also be understood and translated as “I will be” (cf. ESV footnote). Given the context of Ex. 3:12 (“I will be with you”), the name of Yahweh (“the LORD”) is also a clear reminder of God’s promises to his people and of his help for them to fulfill their calling. In each of these cases, the personal name of God as revealed to Moses expresses something essential about the attributes and character of God.

3:14 The name “I AM” anticipates the “I am” sayings of Jesus (see John 8:58), which show his deity.

This name for God points to His self-existence and eternality; it denotes “I am the One who is/will be,” which is decidedly the best and most contextually suitable option from a number of theories about its meaning and etymological source. The significance in relation to “God of your fathers” is immediately discernible: He’s the same God throughout the ages! The consonants from the Heb. word Yhwh, combined with the vowels from the divine name Adonai (Master or Lord), gave rise to the name “Jehovah” in English. Since the name Yahweh was considered so sacred that it should not be pronounced, the Massoretes inserted the vowels from Adonai to remind themselves to pronounce it when reading instead of saying Yahweh. Technically, this combination of consonants is known as the “tetragrammaton.”

† 3:14 — And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
We serve the God who is alive, who is present, who is here right now and who gives life and breath to everything that lives (Acts 17:25). He IS, whether anything else remains or not.

3:14 I AM WHO I AM: The One who spoke to Moses declared Himself to be the Eternal One—uncaused and independent. Only the Creator of all things can call Himself the I AM in the absolute sense; all other creatures are in debt to Him for their existence. But in addition, God the Creator declares His relationship with the people of Israel. The future tense of the Hebrew verb related to God’s name is used in v. 12: The I Am will be with His people. Thus God declares His covenantal relationship with Israel with His name. Many refer to the “I Am” as the covenantal name of God.

Over Jordan with Singing | VCY

Thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee.Deuteronomy 33:29

That archenemy, the devil, is a liar from the beginning; but he is so very plausible that, like mother Eve, we are led to believe him. Yet in our experience we shall prove him a liar.

He says that we shall fall from grace, dishonor our profession, and perish with the doom of apostates; but, trusting in the Lord Jesus, we shall hold on our way and prove that Jesus loses none whom His Father gave Him. He tells us that our bread will fail, and we shall starve with our children; yet the Feeder of the ravens has not forgotten us yet, and He will never do so, but will prepare us a table in the presence of our enemies.

He whispers that the Lord will not deliver us Out of the trial which is looming in the distance, and he threatens that the last ounce will break the camel’s back. What a liar he is! For the Lord will never leave us or forsake us. “Let him deliver him now!” cries the false fiend: but the Lord will silence him by coming to our rescue.

He takes great delight in telling us that death will prove too much for us. “How wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?” But there also he shall prove a liar unto us, and we shall pass through the river singing psalms of glory.

September 19 Afternoon Verse of the Day

PERFECT LOVE AND THE CHARACTER OF GOD

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (4:7–8)

John addressed his audience as beloved (agapētoi, “[divinely] loved ones”) (cf. 2:7; 3:2, 21; 4:1, 11) whom he urged to love one another. Again, unlike emotional, physical, or friendship love, agapē (love) is the love of self-sacrificing service (Phil. 2:2–5; Col. 3:12–14; cf. Rom. 14:19; 1 Cor. 10:23–24; 13:4–7), the love granted to someone who needs to be loved (Heb. 6:10; 1 Peter 2:17; cf. Rom. 12:15), not necessarily to someone who is attractive or lovable.
The first reason believers are to extend such sacrificial love to one another is that love is from God. Just as God is life (Ps. 36:9) and the source of eternal life (1:1–2; 3:1–2, 9; 5:12; 2 Tim. 1:1; Titus 1:2), and just as He is light (1:5–7; 2:8–11; cf. Isa. 60:19), He is also love (cf. 4:16). Therefore, if believers possess His life and walk in His light (righteousness and truth), they will also both possess and manifest His love, since everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Because they are God’s children, manifesting His nature, they will reflect His love to others.
As alluded to earlier, the love John refers to is the divine, perfect love that God gives only to His own. The verb rendered is born is a perfect passive form of gennaō and could be literally translated “has been begotten.” Everyone God has saved in the past continues to give evidence of that fact in the present. Those who possess the life of God have the capacity and the experience of loving. In contrast, the one who does not love does not know God. Those whose lives are not characterized by love for others are not Christians, no matter what they claim. The Jewish religionists (scribes, Pharisees, and other leaders) of Jesus’ day, as well as the false teachers in the church of John’s day, knew a lot about God, but they did not really know Him (cf. 1 Tim. 6:20; 2 Tim. 3:7). The absence of God’s love in their lives revealed their unregenerate condition as conclusively as did their aberrant theology.
God by nature is love, and therefore He defines love; it does not define Him. People constantly impose on God a human view of love, but He transcends any such human limitations. That God is love explains a number of things in the biblical worldview. First, it explains the reason He created. In eternity past, within the perfect fellowship of the Trinity, God the Father purposed, as a love gift to His Son, to redeem a people who would honor and glorify the Son (cf. John 6:39; 17:9–15). Thus, though God existed in perfect Trinitarian solitude, He created a race of beings out of which He would love and redeem those who would in turn love Him forever.
Second, the truth that God is love explains human choice. He designed sinners to know and love Him by an act of their wills (cf. John 7:17–18), though not apart from the work of His Spirit (cf. John 1:12–13; Eph. 2:5; Titus 3:5). God’s greatest commandment is that people love Him with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:29–30).
Third, the reality that God is love also explains His providence. He orchestrates all the circumstances of life, in all their wonder, beauty, and even difficulty, to reveal many evidences of His love (Pss. 36:6; 145:9; Rom. 8:28).
Fourth, that He is love explains the divine plan of redemption. If God operated only on the basis of His law, He would convict people of their sin, and justly consign everyone to spend forever in hell (cf. Ps. 130:3). But His love provided a remedy for sin through the atoning work of Jesus Christ (Matt. 1:21; Gal. 4:4–5) on behalf of all who repent of their sin and trust in His mercy (John 3:14–15). In the most well-known statement of His earthly ministry, Jesus said, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16; cf. 2 Cor. 5:19–20; 1 Tim. 4:10; Titus 3:4–5).
God’s general love for mankind manifests itself in several ways. First, He expresses His love and goodness to all through common grace. The psalmist wrote, “The Lord is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works” (Ps. 145:9; cf. Matt. 5:45). As part of this, God reveals His love through His compassion, primarily in that He delays His final judgment against unrepentant sinners (Gen. 15:16; Acts 17:30–31; Rom. 3:25; cf. Gen. 18:20–33). That compassion is further expressed in His myriad of warnings to sinners (Jer. 7:13–15, 23–25; 25:4–6; Ezek. 33:7–8; Zeph. 2:1–3; Luke 3:7–9; 1 Cor. 10:6–11; Rev. 3:1–3). He finds no pleasure in the damnation of anyone (Ezek. 18:23, 32; 2 Peter 3:9). Accompanied with His warnings, God extends His love to every part of the world through His general offer of the gospel (Matt. 11:28; John 7:37; 1 Tim. 2:4; Titus 2:11). As Jesus told the apostles, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15; cf. Matt. 28:19).
That general love, however, is limited to this life. After death, unrepentant sinners will experience God’s final wrath and judgment for all eternity (Dan. 12:2; Matt. 25:41; 2 Thess. 1:9; Rev. 20:12–15). But God has a special, perfect, eternal love that He lavishes on everyone who believes. The apostle John aptly characterized that love Jesus displayed to the apostles when he wrote at the beginning of the upper room narrative: “Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love” (John 13:1b, NIV). Paul later celebrated that special love in his letter to the Ephesians:

God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. (Eph. 2:4–7)

8. Whoever does not love does not know God,
  because God is love.

These two verses and the following two are among the treasured passages of the entire epistle. They speak of love that originates in God and describe the believer as a person who loves and knows God. By contrast, the unbeliever does not love because he does not know God.
a. “Dear friends, let us love one another.” John addresses the readers with the familiar term dear friends (2:7; 3:2, 21; 4:1, 7, 11) which literally means “beloved.” He includes in the sentence an exhortation to love one another. He is not discussing the affection that family members have for each other. Rather, he writes the verb love, which means “divine love.” John indicates that God initiates love, showers it upon his people, and expects that in turn they express this same love to each other.
b. “Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” This, then, is the distinctive mark of the believer. The person who is born of God (2:29; 3:9; 5:1) is a window through which the love of God shines into the world. The believer expresses his love to his fellow man by doing for his neighbor what he himself wishes that others do for him. In short, he shows his love by obeying the Golden Rule (Luke 6:31). His love is genuinely unselfish.
The believer loves his neighbor as himself because, as John writes, the believer knows God. That is, he has fellowship with God the Father and his Son (1:3) and thus reflects the virtue of love.
Incidentally, when John says, “[he] knows God,” he may have intended to refute the Gnostic heretics of his day who prided themselves on having knowledge of God.
c. “Whoever does not love does not know God.” John compares the believer with the unbeliever and observes that when love is absent, knowledge of God is nonexistent. The person who fails to commune with God in prayer and neglects to read the Bible cannot be the instrument through which God demonstrates his divine love. The unbeliever has not even begun to know God. Without knowledge of God, there is no love. Love and knowledge of God are two sides of the same coin.
d. “God is love.” Children learn the words at home and in church. Adults treasure these three words, for in them John has stated one of God’s characteristics: love. This means not only that God loves his creation and his people, or that God is full of love. It means that in his very being God is love. And this is the message John conveys in his epistle.
Augustine observes, “If nothing were said in praise of love throughout the pages of this Epistle, if nothing whatever throughout the pages of the Scriptures, and this one thing only were all we were told by the voice of the Spirit of God, For God is love; nothing more ought we require.”

What we thought we knew A year ago, we were surprised to hear that the place we thought was the Pool of Siloam for the past ten years is not exactly what we assumed, because excavations carried out there overturned previous understandings. We wrote about that discovery in a previous article. we thought that the Pool of Siloam was first built by Hezekiah, when he redirected the Gihon Spring through the Siloam Tunnel and constructed a new pool to collect the spring water. But now we know that a pool already existed at least a century before Hezekiah, and it is a massive pool much larger than we expected to find.

US immigration judge rules Palestinian student activist Mahmoud Khalil be deported due to green card application omissions
A Louisiana immigration judge has ordered pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil to be deported to Syria or Algeria after finding omissions on Khalil’s green card application. Khalil, a former Columbia University graduate student, was at the center of efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to crack down on antisemitic campus protests, often led by international students. Judge Jamee Comans found that Khalil was not eligible for a waiver granting special relief, saying it would amount to rewarding his fraud for failing to disclose his membership in pro-Palestinian groups.

Sanhedrin Issues Statement Mourning Charlie Kirk’s Death
The nascent Sanhedrin issued a declaration mourning Charlie Kirk’s death, directly connecting the Christian conservative pro-Israel activist’s September 10 killing to broader religious themes related to Israel and global redemption. The Sanhedrin’s statement, dated “22nd Elul, 5785” in the Jewish calendar, opens with explicit grief: “The Court grieves over the murder of Charles Kirk, who was an extraordinary and exceptional great supporter of the people of Israel.” The declaration immediately connects Kirk’s death to messianic prophecy, quoting extensively from Isaiah: The Sanhedrin elevated Kirk to quasi-prophetic status, declaring: “Charles Kirk was among the wise of the nations of the world, who understood reality clearly, who understood the divine election of the people of Israel. The Sanhedrin presented a direct theological interpretation of the killing: ………

War Is One Of The Most Important Major Trends To Watch During The Next Several Months
Because the catastrophic wars that are raging on the other side of the globe are not directly affecting our day to day lives, most people in the western world are not paying too much attention to them. But they should be, because they are extremely important. In fact, I believe that war is one of the most important major trends to watch during the next several months. I am particularly concerned about the Middle East, because I have a feeling that we will be seeing some very interesting “surprises” in the region before 2025 is over.

America Is Reaching A Boiling Point
The “left” deeply hates the “right”, and the “right” deeply hates the “left”. But how is a bitterly divided nation supposed to thrive? How is it even supposed to survive? In fact, in so many ways America is now the complete opposite of what our founders intended.

Mass Carnage: The Tech Industry Has Laid Off More Than 166,000 Workers So Far In 2025
“Efficiency” has become one of the hottest trends in the tech industry, and that is really bad news for American workers, because one of the best ways to become “more efficient” is to get rid of low-performing employees. Just about every time a big tech company fires a bunch of workers, the stock price of that particular company makes a significant jump. Needless to say, many executives have taken note of this, and that could help to explain why even highly successful tech companies have been conducting multiple rounds of mass layoffs in 2025.”

IN TODAY’S DIGEST

EXECUTIVE NEWS SUMMARY

The Editors

  • Democrats love socialism, hate capitalism: A recent Gallup poll provided a piece of not-news for those who follow politics: Democrats support socialism and hate capitalism. Some 66% of Democrats have a positive view of socialism compared to 38% of Independents and 14% of Republicans (which might be the real headline). CNN’s Harry Enten had even more striking numbers with Democrats favoring socialism by 36 percentage points, up from just seven points in 2010. A minority of Democrats, conversely, have a positive view of capitalism, just 42%. Independents and conservatives are both favorable at 51% and 74%. These numbers are the least favorable for capitalism that Gallup has ever recorded. However, Enten’s numbers say that socialism still loses by 18 points while capitalism is favored by 12 points nationally.

  • Walz over Buttigieg: Kamala Harris’s new book alleges that she chose Tim Walz, the “manly” Minnesota governor, over Pete Buttigieg as her vice presidential pick because a black woman and a gay man on the same ticket would have been dead in the water. It’s not a surprising admission that a Democrat would judge candidates based on their “immutable” characteristics. Harris claims that Buttigieg knew in his heart that she couldn’t pick him, but Mayor Pete says the opposite: “I just believe in giving Americans more credit than that.” It seems unlikely that Buttigieg would’ve brought Harris’s campaign victory, but it’s hilarious that the Democrats avoided a gay man and then picked Tim “Jazz Hands” Walz in an effort to bring the testosterone. Maybe one day Democrats will embrace MLK’s dream and judge people on the content of their character, but that day does not appear imminent.
  • Measles, mumps vax update: On Thursday, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted to change the recommended age for administration of the measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella vaccine (MMRV) to no younger than a four-year-old. The ACIP’s previous recommendation for the MMRV vaccine was for children beginning at 12 months of age. Criticism has arisen against HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over his efforts to fire several ACIP members and replace them with his own appointees. The result of this 8-3 vote serves to fuel the narrative that Kennedy is promoting his own controversial views on vaccines, rather than adhering to the broad scientific consensus. While this serves only to provide official ACIP-recommended guidelines to parents on the MMRV vaccine, concerns have been raised about how this may negatively impact health insurance coverage for the vaccine and, in turn, yield lower vaccination rates.
  • Biden’s missing border crossing kids found: Joe Biden’s administration allowed more than 500,000 children to cross the U.S. southern border without a parent. By 2023, the New York Times was reporting that the government had lost track of 88,000 of those kids. His administration left unaddressed the more than 65,000 kids who were flagged at the southern border for safety concerns. The Trump administration had tracked down 10,000 of the missing children by July. Now that number has risen to 22,000 children found and more than 400 criminal sponsors arrested. Assuming every child that has been located was one of those flagged for safety concerns, that leaves 43,000 children that the Trump administration still needs to track down.
  • 48 Trump nominees confirmed in a single vote: Senate Republicans just went nuclear. That’s the description they’ve given of the rule change Republicans have been forced to enact in the face of obstructionist Democrats. The “nuclear option” allows for lower-level nominees to be confirmed in groups; higher-level nominees, like cabinet positions, still require individual votes. The 48 nominees had already been advanced out of committees, but were held up by individual floor votes that Democrats were dragging out to the maximum extent. The 51-47 party line vote is the first of its kind, and if those votes hold, it should allow Republicans to quickly work through the backlog of Trump’s nominees that Democrats have held up with blanket holds.

  • Kids’ gaming site under scrutiny over Kirk “assassination simulator”: The online gaming site, Roblox, which is popular with children and boasts 380 million monthly active users, has pulled an “assassination simulator” from its platform that appeared not long after Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Roblox also noted that it had pulled over 100 other user-created games that offered similar “experiences” to the Kirk assassination simulator. Roblox CEO David Baszucki stated that he was “saddened” by Kirk’s assassination and that his company’s “Community Standards prohibit content and behavior that re-enacts specific real world violent or sensitive events or promotes terrorism or hatred against individuals or groups.” His “moderation team is taking swift action” to deal with any content that is flagged for policy violations. Meanwhile, Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has launched an investigation into Roblox, stating that it “lacks adequate safety measures and is overrun with harmful content and child predators.”
  • Federal judges express anti-gun views from the bench: The Second Amendment defense group Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms has raised alarms over the growing number of federal judges expressing anti-gun views from the bench. The group’s chairman, Alan Gottlieb, noted a recent example: Judge James Robart, in sentencing a repeat felon for possessing a firearm, said, “In my experience, a gun is an invitation to get into trouble.” Gottlieb noted other examples, including DC Judge Ana Reyes, who told federal agents during Donald Trump’s recent DC crime crackdown that “I freak out around guns.” Last year, New York Judge Abena Darkeh objected to a defendant referencing the Constitution, stating, “Do not bring the Second Amendment into this courtroom. It doesn’t exist here. So, you can’t argue Second Amendment. This is New York.”
  • Trump looking to return troops to Bagram: Leaving Afghanistan was a disastrous mistake. Donald Trump recently announced that the U.S. is working to reestablish a troop presence at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. “We were going to leave Afghanistan, but we were going to leave it with strength and dignity, and we were going to keep Bagram, the big air base — one of the biggest air bases in the world,” Trump recently stated. “We’re trying to get it back, by the way.” He then explained, “One of the reasons we want the base is, as you know, it’s an hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons.” While the U.S. and Taliban have no formal diplomatic relationship currently, Trump stated that there exist economic means that could be leveraged in order to regain Bagram: “We’re trying to get it back because they need things from us.”

FEATURED ANALYSIS

Who ‘Censored’ Jimmy Kimmel?

Nate Jackson

Left-wingers are angrier about Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension than they were about Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

Maybe that’s understandable. Charlie was a young, dynamic, fun conservative who loved free speech and respectful dialogue with his opponents. He was a decent human being.

The late-night comics who are most outraged about Kimmel are old, stale, angry leftists who are anything but decent or even funny. Jimmy might be the worst of the bunch.

On Wednesday, ABC suspended Kimmel indefinitely after the host’s egregious lie about the ideology of Kirk’s assassin. “We hit some new lows over the weekend,” Kimmel said on Monday’s show, “with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them.”

The Federal Communications Commission’s website is clear: Recipients of broadcast licenses, of which ABC is one, are prohibited “from broadcasting false information concerning a crime or a catastrophe if:”

  1. the licensee knows this information is false;
  2. it is foreseeable that broadcast of the information will cause substantial public harm; and
  3. broadcast of the information does in fact directly cause substantial public harm.

At least the first two are arguably in play. God forbid the third one comes to pass.

The assassin was clearly a radicalized left-winger, as was stated by law enforcement very early on. It was entirely foreseeable, given that hateful rhetoric about Kirk and other conservatives had already incited the assassin, that lying about his motivation by attributing it to the already-lied-about Right could incite further left-wing violence. That’s especially true when Leftmedia talkingheads refuse to correct Kimmel, instead insinuating that he was censored for speaking the truth, and reporting today that the motive is still unknown.

That said, those FCC regulations are arguably unconstitutional. The First Amendment makes no exceptions for the freedom of speech, though it’s also true that broadcast networks don’t have a constitutional right to serve as propagandists for one political party.

Let’s just get rid of the FCC.

Either way, Kimmel may be a crude jerk and a hypocrite who once hosted the misogynist “Man Show” and wore blackface, but he’s no dummy. He knew this was a bald-faced lie, but because he’s made a career out of such mockery, he thought he could get away with it. He reportedly even planned on doubling down the following night.

Instead, he beat Stephen Colbert to the exit, and he may never return.

Speaking of Colbert, it’s no surprise that he was among the angriest over Kimmel’s suspension and is planning to have his pal as a guest soon. Last night, he primarily directed his ire at the Trump administration. “That is blatant censorship, and it always starts small,” Colbert said. “And if ABC thinks this is going to satisfy the regime, they are woefully naive.”

Jon Stewart offered outlandish praise for “Our Great Father” and “Dear Leader” Donald Trump, while Jimmy Fallon had a voiceover give an administration-approved message about Trump’s trip to the United Kingdom.

These bits are hilarious only in their utter lack of self-awareness. These unfunny clowns have been shamelessly parroting Democrat talking points while hating on Trump for years.

Indeed, Chuck Schumer sounded exactly the same: “It is outrageous, it’s a page right out of Xi’s playbook. This is just despicable and disgusting, and against democratic values. Trump and his allies [are doing what] autocracies do. I am just outraged by it. This is what dictators do. This is what Xi would do. This is what Putin would do.”

Regarding the FCC and the allegation of government censorship, both Left and Right media outlets are expressing consternation over Chair Brendan Carr’s comments, questioning whether the government’s heavy hand has silenced Kimmel’s voice.

“We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr said Wednesday before Kimmel’s suspension. “These companies can find ways to change conduct and take actions on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

At the risk of talking out of both sides of my mouth, I’ll say two things. First, if Joe Biden’s FCC had said, Nice broadcast license you have there; shame if anything happened to it, every conservative and Trump supporter would rightly be in an uproar. At best, Carr muddied the waters. Second, Trump’s FCC didn’t actually do anything — all Carr did was tell a podcaster that this was worth looking into.

That second part is an important distinction. ABC has every right to yank one of its overpaid stars from any time slot. The First Amendment does not guarantee Jimmy Kimmel a highly paid gig falsely trashing Republicans — a gig that he’s had uninterrupted for 23 seasons until now.

Moreover, it’s an open question whether Carr’s comments provoked ABC’s decision. Conservatives were quickly marshaling a boycott effort against ABC, and there was a rebellion among executives at Nexstar and Sinclair, who said their affiliates that broadcast ABC’s content would cut Kimmel’s show indefinitely. Notably, both Nexstar and Sinclair are seeking merger approvals from the FCC.

The C Suite at Disney clearly panicked at the idea of producing a high-priced show that millions of people wouldn’t even be able to see, especially when Kimmel’s ratings were already circling the drain.

In other words, yes, government censorship is wrong, but this wasn’t necessarily government censorship.

Government censorship is what Joe Biden’s administration did by coordinating with Facebook to suppress certain speech about COVID. Government censorship is what Democrat after Democrat after Democrat routinely calls for when they hear anything they don’t like (i.e., “misinformation” and “disinformation”). Democrats perfected speech suppression over the last five years.

Now they’re upset? Now they’re decrying “authoritarianism”?

Trump is once again pondering beating them at their own game. “If they’re 97% against, they give me only bad publicity, or press — I mean, they’re getting a license. I would think maybe their license should be taken away,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One. “It will be up to Brendan Carr.” He made a similar threat in August.

Let’s say Trump’s FCC does follow through on his threats. Democrats would only be suffering under the system they created.

Indeed, this is the peril of creating such a system of politicized punishments. “One day,” Ben Shapiro rightly notes, “the shoe will be on the other foot.” Maybe the better analogy is that the club will be in the other hand.

A final point about censorship: The only person who has been permanently silenced is Charlie Kirk, who died of a bullet through his throat.

But the whole point is that they didn’t have to say the quiet part out loud. All they had to do is construct a society thick with brainwashed young men and women who hate themselves, hate the bodies they were born into, hate their nation and their faith and their families, and take directions from a top-down political infrastructure that instructs them what to think and when. “Mr. Kimmel’s comments about the death of Mr. Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, and we do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views or values of the local communities in which we are located. Continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform in the communities we serve is simply not in the public interest at the current time, and we have made the difficult decision to preempt his show in an effort to let cooler heads prevail as we move toward the resumption of respectful, constructive dialogue.” —Nexstar’s broadcasting chief, Andrew Alford

Teaching The Three Rs: Clinton & Weingarten Return To Republicans, Rage, & Recrimination As Schools Continue To Decline | ZeroHedge

Authored by Jonathan Turley,

Many people are calling out former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for a posting supporting American Federation of Teachers (AFT) chief Randi Weingarten’s new book in which she paints her political opponents as “fascists.”

The timing was flagged as, at best, tone deaf in the wake of the assassination of Charlie Kirk by a shooter who wrote fascist references on his bullets and was clearly radicalized by such rage rhetoric.

For me, the timing was most notable in how Weingarten and Clinton are again pushing their extreme rhetoric as a new report emerged showing the utter failure of our schools to actually educate our children. Weingarten and Clinton cannot be bothered by the long-standing declines in education. They are returning to the three Rs: Republicans, Rage, and Recrimination.

Weingarten is “credited” with turning the teacher’s union into an extension of the Democratic Party, often appearing at political rallies with her signature high-volume screeds:

Clinton pushed the use of education to paint opponents as fascists: “Congratulations to my friend [Weingarten] on ‘Why Fascists Fear Teachers.’ From banning books to controlling curriculum, authoritarians go after public education because it’s a cornerstone of democracy.”

Schools have become the cornerstone of a political strategy as opposed to actual education. As Weingarten and Clinton were pushing the fascism attacks, a new study showed just how badly teacher’s unions and administrators have failed our students.

While Weingarten and other unions have poured millions into democratic  and liberal campaigns, they have done little to improve education for millions of students.

High school students, especially 12th graders, hit record lows this year, according to a new report from the National Assessment of Education Progress.

The new report, known as the Nation’s Report Card, shows almost half of high school seniors are now testing below basic levels in math and reading, and approximately 35% are at or above a proficient reading level, while 32% of them had a below “basic” reading proficiency.

In math, only about 22% of 12th graders are performing at or above proficiency standards.

A review of eighth graders and their science ability found 31% of them were performing at proficient or above proficient standards.

However, it is time to again attack your opponents as fascists in the name of education.

Teachers and school boards are killing the institution of public education by treating children and parents more like captives than consumers. They are force-feeding social and political priorities, including passes for engaging in approved protests.

Faced with abysmal scores, particularly for minority students, school boards and union officials have called for lowering or suspending proficiency standards or declared meritocracy to be a form of “white supremacy.” Gifted and talented programs are being eliminated in the name of “equity.”

At the same time, we have previously discussed how schools have been dropping the use of standardized tests to achieve diversity goals in admissions. Cal State dropped standardized testing “to level the playing field” for minority students.

The result is that colleges and universities are dealing with students who lack proficiency in basic subjects. This year, Harvard University was forced to introduce remedial, high-school-level math courses for its students due to falling scholastic standards.

The problem with a new diatribe about fascists is that many of your students may have little understanding of that term. Social studies proficiency has also been failing for years.
