Blessed be the God of grace that it is so! He has a people whom He has chosen from of old to be His peculiar portion. These by nature have wills as stubborn as the rest of the froward sons of Adam; but when the day of His power comes and grace displays its omnipotence, they become willing to repent and to believe in Jesus. None are saved unwillingly, but the will is made sweetly to yield itself. What a wondrous power is this, which never violates the will and yet rules it! God does not break the lock, but He opens it by a master key which He alone can handle. Now are we willing to be, to do, or to suffer as the LORD wills. If at any time we grow rebellious, He has but to come to us with power, and straightway we run in the way of His commands with all our hearts. May this be a day of power with me as to some noble effort for the glory of God and the good of my fellowmen! LORD, I am willing; may I not hope that this is a day of Thy power? How God Treats His Friends | Ligonier Ministries

When we suffer, it can be hard to look around at the blessings that some Christians enjoy and wonder what happened with our lives. Social media does not help, as it gives us front-row seats to the blessings of hundreds of people we know (and millions of people we don’t know). While even the average person in relatively pleasant circumstances can struggle in this way, the experience is greatly compounded for those enduring comprehensive and/or chronic suffering.

It’s one thing to envy the prosperity of the wicked. Asaph describes his own experience of that in Psalm 73, and the psalm is instructive for believers who envy the blessings of unbelievers. But how are Christians who experience comprehensive and chronic suffering to understand their lives in contrast to the more prosperous believers around them who seem to suffer much less? Why does God treat His children so differently? Does He play favorites? Why is there so much apparent inequity of circumstances among believers, and how are we to understand that disparity?

These questions can plague those experiencing comprehensive and chronic suffering. Not only can these disparities tempt us to disbelieve God’s goodness, but they can also lead us to doubt our standing before God. We might conclude that if God is taking His other children on a field trip and we’re left behind at school to stand in the corner all day—or even worse, thrown under the school bus—we must have done something to anger Him. Hard thoughts about God, other Christians, and ourselves can overwhelm us as we get pulled into the undertow of our observations and conclusions.

The question we must answer is this: How does God treat His friends?

One of These Things Is Not Like the Other

For many of us who live in the West, it can be hard to gain an accurate perspective of the Christian life. Our moment is quite abnormal compared to other parts of the world and other eras in history. And when the abnormal becomes normal to us, any deviation from that norm makes us feel as though something has gone awry.

In this milieu, it can be easy for us to look at the comfortable lives of the average Christians around us and conclude that something has gone horribly wrong for us. This is especially the case when our suffering is comprehensive and chronic, touching many areas of our lives at the same time, perhaps permanently: our physical health, our finances, our church involvement, our friendships, our careers, our families, and our homes and belongings. When this occurs, our daily lives and rhythms become so different from those of most of the people we know that we can feel as though we don’t belong. When it seems as though others are prospering in these various areas of life while we are experiencing deep loss and affliction in most (or all) of those areas, we may wonder, Why does God seem to be treating me so differently from His other children? Is this a sign that I don’t belong to Him?

That’s what’s so hard about comprehensive and chronic suffering: Because it invades more parts of life than it leaves alone, it places you in a strange new world in which you may struggle to relate to the average Christian in your church. You may become very aware of the fact that what is “normal life” for many of the Christians around you is nothing like your life. It might even become difficult to have casual conversations with other believers. Maybe you feel like a deer caught in the headlights when you’re asked about “normal” things that don’t apply to you at all and can’t give the answers that people expect.

When that happens, the place where we should feel like we belong the most—in the church and among fellow believers—can become the place where we feel most different, most “other,” most out of place. It’s hard to put into words how draining and discouraging these experiences in the house of God are. How do we answer people’s questions or contribute to the group conversation when everyone else’s lives and concerns are so different from ours and we cannot relate to them in these ways?

It’s not surprising, therefore, that those experiencing comprehensive and chronic suffering can be tempted to conclude that God is cruel or unkind in how He dispenses temporal blessings to His children. It’s not surprising if sufferers fear that they must be guilty of some sin, that if they could only figure it out, God would take them out of the corner and let them go on the field trip too. It’s also easy to see how sufferers can feel that they simply don’t belong at church, when conversations always seem to revolve around the differences between their lives and others’ lives rather than around that which they hold in common.

All this is why we must turn to Scripture to try to make sense of the painful question of inequity among believers in this life, allowing God’s Word to shape our interpretations of our experiences rather than the other way around.

What Scripture Says

What does Scripture say about how God treats His friends? More than we might expect. In fact, when we look closely at redemptive history, we see that it was often the people used by God in mighty ways who led what we would consider the “worst” lives. That fact in itself can encourage us if we’re tempted to believe that we must not be friends of God if we’re experiencing comprehensive and chronic suffering. After all, many whom we might consider to be God’s “closest friends” suffered in profound ways during their earthly lives.

For example, Hebrews 11 contains a jarring and—given the flow of the text—unexpected verse. In this famous chapter, we read about the marvelous acts of faith of various biblical figures throughout redemptive history, including Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and more. In verses 33–35, we read that these men and women of faith

conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received back their dead by resurrection.

This sounds like something we can all get behind. Who wouldn’t want a life of faith that conquers kingdoms, obtains promises, performs mighty deeds, and experiences the resurrection power of God in bringing the dead back to life?

That’s precisely why verse 35 is so disturbing. In the first half of the verse, we read, “Women received back their dead by resurrection.” But then the chapter takes a very unexpected turn.

Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated—of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. (vv. 35–38)

It’s stunning how quickly the script flips in verse 35. No new paragraph. Not even a transition word to signal that we’re going from “good” to “bad.” Just one continuous narrative of the people of God that moves from miraculous to macabre. Yet this passage is actually very good news for those experiencing comprehensive and chronic suffering.

Despite how we may feel, the truth is that we are not outside the circle of God’s favor, care, and concern any more than the people described in Hebrews 11:35–38. Yes, from an earthly perspective, it may be that many of God’s children are on the field trip while others are left in the classroom standing in the corner. But, just as we see in Hebrews 11, this does not mean that God plays favorites.

It can be easy to feel that way, but when we widen our perspective to others in Scripture and in history, we realize that God is not targeting us individually because of any cruelty or favoritism in Him or because of any deficiency in us. He simply has different purposes for different people while showing perfect love toward every single son or daughter who belongs to Him in Christ.

It’s also true that sometimes we can’t see and don’t know the sufferings that people around us are facing. From the outside, it may look like they have “perfect” lives, and we may be tempted to envy them. Yet they, too, may be experiencing deep affliction that, for various reasons, they are not able to candidly share with others. Things are not always what they seem.

You Follow Me

I’ve always been jostled by Jesus’s response to Peter at the end of John’s gospel. Jesus had just predicted that Peter would die a martyr’s death, saying to him:

Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go. (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God). (John 21:18–19)

Peter responds by asking Jesus what would happen to the Apostle John: “Lord, what about this man?” (John 21:21). Jesus answers, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that you? You follow me!” (John 21:22). Jesus says the same to each one of us as we look at what’s happening in our lives and compare it to others’ lives. His response to Peter, and to us, is that it really shouldn’t matter how God chooses to work in others’ lives for His glory. No matter where the road He lays out for us may lead, the important thing is that we continue to follow Him on it.

Judgment in a Context of God’s Care for His Own (1:7)

7 Good is Yahweh,
a refuge in the day of adversity.
And he knows those who seek shelter in him.

The message of Nahum up to this point appears purely in negative terms. Almost nothing but judgment has been discussed. But now it becomes apparent that those who turn to the Lord have nothing to fear. He is good, and his people shall enjoy an abundant salvation. Actually the judgment on Nineveh must be viewed from the perspective of God’s intent to show mercy to his people. He responds to their cry for relief from oppression by sending judgment on their enemies.
Indeed, it must be recognized that God’s “own,” his favored ones who find him to be merciful, cannot be identified merely as “Israel” after the flesh. As a matter of fact, precisely the historical context of Nahum’s declaration of the goodness of God to those whom he knows indicates that a simplistic or purely ethnic definition of “Israel” cannot apply. Earlier in God’s dealing with the inhabitants of Nineveh through the ministry of the prophet Jonah, God indicated that he could be just as merciful to the heathen Ninevites as he had been to his own people. The fact that Nineveh in Nahum’s day was targeted for devastation could not blot out the reality of the earlier mercy shown to the inhabitants of Nineveh in response to their faith and repentance. For Israel too would bear the brunt of devastations by the same Babylon that was to bring judgment on Assyria. The Lord is good—but only to those who seek shelter in him. This phrase suggests not merely faith, entrustment to the Lord. It recognizes an imminent danger from which the person who trusts must seek deliverance. The ultimate source of this danger is in the Lord himself as he manifests his righteous judgments. But the repentant sinner seeks for help in none other than him.
According to the prophet, God knows those who seek shelter in him. This “knowing” of the Lord must be understood in the full biblical sense of “loving” with the most intense care. When the prophet Amos declares that God has “known” Israel alone among all the nations of the earth, he cannot mean that God possesses cognitive information about only one nation in the world (cf. Amos 3:2). Instead, he means that this people alone as a nation has received the special love of God.
The Lord knows those who seek shelter in him, meaning that he loves them, cares for them, cherishes their well-being. This concept belongs precisely in this context because it provides a proper framework for understanding God’s coming judgment that will devastate the earth. For the sake of his people, as a step toward the full realization of their salvation, God shall judge Nineveh and the Assyrians.“Goodness” in God is most frequently associated with covenant fidelity (ṭeseḏ; cf. 2 Chr. 5:13; 7:3; Ezra 3:11; Ps. 106:1; 136:1; etc.). Particularly in association with the glory of God manifested in his dwelling among his people it is declared that the Lord is good. Those who seek shelter in the temple of God will find out just how good and merciful he is.

Ver. 7. The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble.—Goodness a stronghold:—
The great design of religion is to bring us to God and true blessedness. In order to this, there must be full and practical confidence in God,—submission to His providence and law,—unquestioning repose in Himself. The text, though not possessing the form of a promise, is a declaration concerning God Himself, which includes the whole system of promise. Such is God. If such is God, then happy the people that is in such a case; yea, blessed they whose God is the Lord.
I. “THE LORD IS GOOD.”

  1. The expression reminds us of the absolute goodness of the Divine nature, and especially of the Divine benevolence. Whatever goodness there is in the creature is derived—God is its source; it is limited—in God it is unbounded; dependent—in God it is essential and independent; mutable—in God it is changeless.
  2. The active character of the Divine goodness. He “doeth” good. In inanimate creation are displayed His perfections. All living beings look up to God. He universally provides. But we are of more value than many sparrows. And He cares for us.
  3. God’s goodness in its suitableness to man’s present condition. He is a sinner. Providential blessings continued. Evil tendencies of sin checked. A wisely ordered scheme of redemption; and hence, forbearance, salvation.
    II. “A STRONGHOLD IN THE DAY OF TROUBLE.” Figure forcible in the East, where predatory expeditions are usual. God a “stronghold for defence of His people.” Recollect what He is in Himself. All His attributes are employed for the benefit of His people. In the day of trouble they are shut up with God.
    III. “HE KNOWETH THEM THAT TRUST IN HIM.” To trust in God implies satisfied persuasion He will be and do as He has said. Two results—we shall seek all good in Him. We shall abide with Him. Trust in God and doing good are ever conjoined—in nature as well as duty. (G. Cubitt.)
    The goodness of God in seasons of calamity:—
    This book is “The Burden of Nineveh.” Nahum was contemporary with Hezekiah. The immediate design of the prophecy was to minister comfort to the afflicted and alarmed Jews; for the defeat of the enemies of the Church involves its deliverance. The name of the prophet indicates this design;—it signifies comfort or comforter. The text teaches that the Lord is good, even in seasons of calamity.
  4. Such seasons are not only not inconsistent with the Divine goodness, but in various ways manifest it. There is always much affliction in the world. When we suffer under calamities, unworthy thoughts of God are apt to rise within us, and especially suspicions of His goodness. If we indulge these suspicions, they will alienate our hearts from God and His service, and prompt us to impatience, murmuring, and impiety. But they are not inconsistent with God’s goodness. The punishment of transgression is not inconsistent with goodness. Days of judgment on us may be merciful warnings to others. They are often means of delivering and purifying the Church. They are instructors and monitors to future ages.
  5. In seasons of calamity the Lord is good, for He reveals Himself to us as a stronghold, and invites us to flee to Him for safety and comfort.
  6. In days of trouble the Lord is good, for He affectionately watches over all who honour Him with their trust. (James Stark, D.D.)
    The Divine goodness a refuge in trouble:—
    These words have been well compared to a burst of sunshine on a cloudy tempestuous day. The prophet opens his commission with setting forth the terrors of the Lord. But on a sudden this appalling strain ceases. As though impelled by an inward feeling which had obliged him to look around for something to uphold him amid these terrors, he thinks and speaks of the goodness of the Lord.
    I. WHAT THIS GOODNESS IS. We are not to understand here the Divine purity, or holiness, but the benevolence, the kindness, the graciousness of the Lord. The goodness of God, taken in this sense, is that perfection of His nature which inclines Him to deal graciously with His creatures; rich and happy in Himself, to give out of His riches and happiness, and make His creatures partakers of them, as far as their different capacities will admit. This goodness of God is, like every other perfection of His nature, infinite. By this I mean, it cannot be added to, it could not be greater. And His is holy goodness. It always moves and acts in conformity with His just and holy nature. Here it is that we make such mistakes in thinking of God. We take one of His attributes, and we look on it alone, as though God had no other attribute but that; and then a mystery comes over His nature and doings. This goodness is also self-moved, spontaneous, free. It requires nothing in us to call it into exercise towards us; it requires nothing whatever out of God to bring it into operation. It is not the Cross and work of the Lord Jesus that makes God good and gracious to us sinners. He was good and gracious to us before. It was God’s love to us that found for us a Saviour. The Cross and mediation of Christ is the way the Divine goodness has opened for itself into our world. It is the channel through which it flows to us, not the fountain whence it takes its rise.
    II. WHAT THIS GOD OF GOODNESS IS TO HIS PEOPLE IN THE DAY OF THEIR TROUBLE. “A stronghold.” This language conveys the idea of protection and defence. The countries in which the Old Scriptures were written were scenes of almost incessant warfare. Men were continually exposed to hostile inroads and invasions, and were obliged to have fortresses or holds to flee to for security. God is this refuge to the troubled soul in various ways. Sometimes keeping impending trouble off. At other times removing His people out of reach of trouble. More frequently giving them strength to bear their trouble. The prophet here intimates, that the Lord’s goodness shall be the stronghold, the strength and the support. The mere thought of His goodness is to be a consolation and a stay.
    III. WHAT ASSURANCE THEY WHO TRUST HIM HAVE THAT HE WILL BE THIS TO THEM. “He knoweth them that trust in Him.” This brings the infinite knowledge of God to bear upon their case. When I make a living Being my refuge, when I fly to Him to protect me, it is clear that He must know I am come to Him for protection, and know too what my dangers are that He may shield me against them. He knows both us and our troubles. It is impossible for words to exaggerate the attention God pays to His suffering people. The mere act of trusting in God seems to be something spoken of here as something like a claim on His attention and care. Then if you are in affliction, encourage yourselves in the Lord your God. He is all-sufficient in Himself. Make Him the centre of your affections, desires, and consolations. Flee to Him to hide you. (C. Bradley.)
    God a refuge:—
    At Holyhead there is a splendid breakwater which cost a million and a half of money. Rising thirty feet above the waves it defies their utmost fury. We are not surprised that it should be built on so massive a scale, for in a great storm each wave strikes with the sledge hammer force of three tons to the square foot. Though a hurricane blow, and the sea be mountains high, shipping sheltered behind it ride in perfect safety. This is a type of the security God is to those who trust Him.
    God is our refuge:—
    A heathen could say, when a bird, scared by a hawk, flew into his bosom for refuge, “I will not kill thee, nor betray thee to thine enemy, seeing thou fliest to me for sanctuary”: much less will God either slay or give up the soul that takes sanctuary in His name. (W. Gurnall.)
    Secure in God:—
    Readers of Darwin will recall the description he gives of a marine plant which rises from a depth of one hundred and fifty to two hundred feet, and floats on the great breakers of the western ocean. The stem of this plant is less than an inch through; yet it grows and thrives and holds its own against the fierce smitings and pressures of breakers which no masses of rock, however hard, could long withstand. What is the secret of this marvellous resistance and endurance? How can this slender plant face the fury of the elements so successfully, and, in spite of storm and tempests, keep its hold, and perpetuate itself from century to century? The answer has leaped to every lip: It reaches down into the still depths, where it fixes its grasp after the fashion of the instinct that has been put into it, to the naked rocks; and no commotion of the waters can shake it from its fastenings. When a man has deep and inner clingings to God, when the roots of his life go down and take hold on God, mere surface agitation and pressures will not overcome him. He may be floated here and there within a given sweep like a plant bosomed on the sea, and there may be times when it is very rough and the strain is great, but he will survive it all and preserve his integrity.     God’s shielding love:—
    Astronomers tell us that every year millions of meteoric bodies make their way towards our earth with a speed many times greater than that of the swiftest cannon-ball. These, beyond doubt, would strike the earth and destroy its inhabitants but for the air which surrounds it. That air, soft and yielding as it seems, offers so powerful a resistance to the swift motion of the falling meteors that they become vaporised through increased heat, and if they reach the earth at all, it is only in the form of minute meteoric dust. This physical fact has its counterpart in the spiritual realm. The influences of evil which assail the Christian as he goes through the world are often enough to crush and kill in him all spiritual life and joy and beauty, but round about him there is the atmosphere of the Divine love, and that love resists all evil, being as a consuming fire, keeping back from contact with the trusting soul everything that would destroy its purity and blast its blessedness. The love of God is a perfect protection to every Christian believer; with it around us we can walk with untrembling tread, knowing that no “weapon formed against us can prosper.” (Great Thoughts.)
    God a refuge:—
    I once heard of a lonely traveller who sought to cross one of the western prairies. The only thing he had to guide him was a path that had been made by other travellers in the rank grass. But he had not gone very far before the snow began to fall, at first in scattered flakes, like large white feathers, but by and by with thick and blinding fierceness. He soon lost every trace of the path along which he travelled. He was lost, bewildered, and as the darkness began to gather around him he was greatly alarmed. He cried out for help, but the wild winds only laughed at him as hey swept by. He was almost in despair when he saw through the blinding flakes a flickering light. Toward it he bent his exhausted energies. Stumbling and falling over the drifts that had accumulated here and there, he at length came to a settler’s cottage. Can you imagine his thankfulness and joy when he found the storm behind him, in that friendly hut? He was safe. He was happy. In the moment of greatest peril he had found a refuge. Now that is just what God is to every traveller caught in the storm of life. If you but see the light that streams out from the windows of His palace, of His heart, and follow it, you will be safe from harm. The door of mercy is always open; the fires of His love and forgiveness are always glowing; the welcome which He gives is always abundant.
    God’s ways with friends and enemies:—
    The sentiment of the passage is, that the same power which the Almighty displays for the destruction of His enemies, He employs for the protection of His friends.
    I. THE BENIGNITY OF THE EVER-BLESSED GOD. “The Lord is good.” Goodness is associated with every idea it is possible to form of the Most High. Goodness is the perfection of His nature, the foundation of His actions, and comprehends all His other attributes. When His goodness supplies the needy, it is bounty; when it visits the miserable, it is pity; when it pardons the guilty, it is mercy; when it performs His promises, it is faithfulness; when it protects our persons, it is His power; when it orders events to our advantage, it is His wisdom; and when it converts and saves the soul, it is His grace. But where shall we look for its especial display? Not in providence but in redemption. His goodness here is love. This love is—
  7. Comprehensive in its objects.
  8. Satisfying in its nature.
  9. Exalting in its influence.
  10. Perpetual in its existence.
    II. THE REFUGE HE AFFORDS HIS AFFLICTED PEOPLE. “He is a stronghold.”
  11. The distressing period to which the text refers. Such as national calamities; family trouble; soul trouble.
  12. The refuge unfolded to our view. A stronghold, i.e., a fortification, a place of strength and defence.
    III. THE APPROBATION HE EXPRESSES IN THEIR CONFIDENCE. “He knoweth them that trust in Him.” It is supposed that we betake ourselves to the shelter which Divine goodness provides for our safety. A refuge, unless it be embraced, is no refuge at all.
  13. What is the trust of which the text speaks? It is the fruit of faith.
  14. What is the import of the term, “He knoweth them”? It is designed to express a distinguishing and an approving knowledge. He regards their confidence in Him with peculiar favour. (J. E. Good.)
    How good God is!—
    Two kinds of persons are spoken of here.
    I. THOSE WHO ARE IN TROUBLE.
  15. Trouble may be the result of our own imprudence. Or perhaps worse, of our sinfulness.
  16. It may arise from family or business perplexities. Sometimes trouble is allowed to come and go unheeded. The rod is felt, but not the hand that brought it down. Sometimes trouble is received angrily or peevishly. It is very hard to contend against these feelings.
    II. THE CHARACTERS THAT CALMLY WAIT FOR GOD; expecting some further development of His mind, and not venturing to judge according to present appearances. Trusting in God supposes there is some occasion for trust. The work of faith is to trust in God when all outward things go wrong, and there is nothing but the Word of God to rely on.

    The Lord’s favour to those who trust in Him:—
    The Bible abounds with the most sublime descriptions of God, and represents, in a variety of passages, His awful character and glorious perfections. On reading the description in the passage connected with the text it may appear to contain a contradiction. It may seem to represent the Almighty under two different characters. We may be ready to think that He cannot be at once “a jealous God” and “good, slow to anger.” There is no real difficulty. God is in Himself the same, infinitely glorious in all perfections. The seeming differences in His character arise from the different characters of those with whom He has to deal. In this respect His character, like the cloud which accompanied Israel, has a dark side and a bright side. To His adversaries He is a “jealous God.” To His people He is “rich in mercy.” The description here given—
  19. OF THE PEOPLE OF GOD. “They that trust in Him.” Trust is often used for the whole of religion. It signifies a confidence in His power and faithfulness for protection and support, and for a supply of all things necessary to life and godliness. Things which characterise this confidence are—

  22. It is a patient and persevering trust.
  23. It is a solid and well-grounded confidence. Trust in God must be founded on His promise.
    II. OF THE FAVOUR OF GOD TO HIS PEOPLE.
  24. “The Lord is good.” God is goodness. Even His severity against sin is the effect of His goodness.
  25. He is “a stronghold in the day of trouble.” The Lord’s people are not exempt from trouble. But if they have peculiar trials they have peculiar support under them.
  26. The Lord “knoweth them that are His.” He sees, distinguishes, approves. Especially has He respect to them as putting their trust in Him. Many are celebrating our Lord’s first coming this day; let us turn our thoughts to the promise of His second coming. This is as sure as the first advent and derives a great measure of its certainty from it. He who came as a lowly man to serve will assuredly come to take the reward of His service. He who came to suffer will not be slow in coming to reign.

This is our glorious hope, for we shall share His joy. Today we are in our concealment and humiliation, even as He was while here below; but when He cometh it will be our manifestation, even as it will be His revelation. Dead saints shall live at His appearing. The slandered and despised shall shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Then shall the saints appear as kings and priests, and the days of their mourning shall be ended. The long rest and inconceivable splendor of the millennial reign will be an abundant recompense for the ages of witnessing and warring.

Oh, that the Lord would come! He is coming! He is on the road and traveling quickly. The sound of His approach should be as music to our hearts! Ring out, ye bells of hope!

FALSE TEACHING BRINGS SHAME ON THE TEACHERS

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, handling accurately the word of truth. (2:15)

Paul’s second warning about false teaching is by means of contrast. Contrary to such perverters of God’s truth as those mentioned by Peter, Timothy was to be diligent to present [himself] approved to God.
Spoudazō (to be diligent) carries the idea of having zealous persistence to accomplish a particular objective. The diligent believer—in this context, the diligent teacher—gives maximum effort to impart God’s truth as completely, as clearly, and as unambiguously as possible. He gives unreserved commitment to excellence in examining, interpreting, explaining, and applying God’s Word. It is for that reason that “elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching” (1 Tim. 5:17).
The purpose of that diligence is not to please others, and certainly not to please oneself, but to present yourself approved to God. Paristēmi (to present yourself) literally means to stand alongside of. The idea in this passage is that of standing alongside of or before God, of presenting oneself for inspection, as it were, in order to be approved by Him. Dokimos (approved) refers to favorably passing careful scrutiny and thereby being counted worthy.
The supreme purpose of the diligent and selfless teacher is to please God. “For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God?” Paul asked Galatian believers. “Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ” (Gal. 1:10). Every Christian teacher and preacher should be able to say, “Just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not as pleasing men but God, who examines our hearts” (1 Thess. 2:4). His greatest desire is to hear his Master say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matt. 25:21). Such a teacher or preacher is a workman who does not need to be ashamed.
The clear implication, especially in light of the following three verses, is that false teachers, on the other hand, have great reason to be ashamed. One dictionary defines shame as “a painful emotion caused by consciousness of guilt, shortcoming, or impropriety.” Another states that it is “the painful feeling arising from the consciousness of having done something dishonorable.” Therefore, unlike a teacher who stands as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, a teacher who propagates falsehood, especially in the name of God and under the guise of Christianity, ought to be ashamed (cf. 1 John 2:28).
It is obvious, though, that those who have the most reason to be ashamed are the most shameless. They are among those Paul speaks of in his letter to the Philippian church: “For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things” (Phil. 3:18–19, emphasis added). Those who persist in perverting the gospel are no less than “enemies of Christ.” The most damning indictment of them is from the pen of Jude, who calls them “hidden reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you without fear, caring for themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, doubly dead, uprooted; wild waves of the sea, casting up their own shame like foam; wandering stars, for whom the black darkness has been reserved forever” (Jude 12–13).
It is clear from both the Old and New Testaments, as well as from church history and our own time, that many of the worst false teachers claim to be servants of God. The majority of scribes, Pharisees, and other Jewish leaders of Jesus’ day considered themselves to be the godliest of the godly, as well as the only reliable interpreters of Scripture. Yet Jesus said of them, “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature; for he is a liar, and the father of lies” (John 8:44).
Even apart from those extremes, anyone who ignores, misrepresents, misinterprets, or detracts from God’s truth by adding to it or taking away from it (Rev. 22:18–19) has reason to be ashamed as well as fearful. Whether consciously or not, those who corrupt and denigrate God’s truth are the spiritual children of Satan. They are purveyors of his abominable lies and are under God’s sovereign and certain judgment.
The mark of a faithful teacher or preacher is his handling accurately the word of truth. Handling accurately translates a participle of orthotomeō, which means literally to cut straight. It was used of a craftsman cutting a straight line, of a farmer plowing a straight furrow, of a mason setting a straight line of bricks, or of workmen building a straight road. Metaphorically, it was used of carefully performing any task. Because Paul was a tentmaker by trade (Acts 18:3), he may have had in mind the careful, straight cutting and sewing of the many pieces of leather or cloth necessary to make a tent.
Sometimes in the New Testament, the phrase word of truth, or message of truth, refers specifically to the gospel. Paul reminded believers in Ephesus, “In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise” (Eph. 1:13; Col. 1:5). James speaks of the Father’s exercising His will in bringing “us forth by the word of truth, so that we might be, as it were, the first fruits among His creatures” (James 1:18). Many other references to God’s truth refer to the full revelation of His Word in Scripture. Jesus doubtless had this broad meaning in mind when He prayed to His Father on our behalf, “Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth” (John 17:17). In any case, Paul’s point here is the same. Every aspect of God’s truth is to be handled accurately, as a sacred trust by those who teach it and by those who hear it.
The careful exegete and expositor of God’s word of truth must be meticulous in the way he interprets and pieces together the many individual truths found in Scripture. The first and most important principle is that of basing doctrine and standards of living on Scripture alone (sola scriptura), a key watchword of the Protestant Reformation.
Because the Bible is God’s inerrant, authoritative, sufficient, and sole source of His divine word of truth, every other truth rests on that truth. It is not that the inerrancy of Scripture is a more important truth than, say, the deity of Christ or the Trinity. But it is only from the truth of Scripture that we can know all other truths. God’s word of truth in Scripture is the source and measure not only of all spiritual and moral truth but of all truth of any sort on which it speaks.
In explaining, and evidently trying to justify, the conception of his first child out of wedlock, a prominent evangelical leader maintained that true marriage with his wife began at that time, rather than at the time of their wedding. That claim, of course, utterly contradicts what Scripture teaches about the unconditional sinfulness of fornication. When the man’s wife was asked how she felt about that “indiscretion” being made public, she added to her husband’s twisting of Scripture by responding, “Well, now I understand the meaning of John 8:32, ‘the truth shall make you free.’ ” The most cursory look at that passage reveals that Jesus was not speaking about the feeling of relief that often comes with having a sin justified. He was speaking about the truth of His divinity and messiahship. He was speaking “to those Jews who had believed Him,” explaining that their knowing and being made free by that truth was conditioned on their abiding in His Word, which would mark them as “truly [His] disciples” (v. 31).
Equally blasphemous was a young woman who posed nude for a pornographic magazine and said the experience had drawn her closer to God. She even claimed the scriptural promise “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8). The arrogant folly of her statement is made clear in the next half of that verse, which commands: “Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
It is one thing to genuinely repent of a sin and to have the assurance of God’s forgiveness. It is a different thing entirely to twist God’s Word in an effort to justify the sin. It is one thing for an unbeliever, who makes no claim of godliness, to be unashamed of a sin. It is quite another thing, and immeasurably worse, for a person who claims salvation to be unashamed of a sin, especially when God’s Word is used to defend it.

  1. Timothy’s personal example must serve as a powerful weapon against error: Do your utmost to present yourself to God approved. Timothy must exert every effort so to conduct himself that even now before the bar of God’s judgment he stands approved, that is, as one who, after thorough examination by no one less than the Supreme Judge, has the satisfaction of knowing that the latter is well-pleased with him and commends him (note synonyms in Rom. 14:18 and 2 Cor. 10:18). Now this happy result will be achieved if Timothy is found to be:

a. a workman who has nothing to be ashamed of,
accordingly also:
b. rightly handling the word of the truth.

Timothy, then, must be a workman, not a quibbler. His work, moreover, must be such that it does not reflect shame on him and that he does not need to fear that shame will cover him when he hears the divine verdict with respect to it.
This means, of course, that he is the kind of leader who is engaged in “rightly handling the word of the truth.” This word of the truth is “the testimony concerning our Lord” (2 Tim. 1:8), “the gospel” (same reference and see Eph. 1:13), “the word of God” (2 Tim. 2:9). It is God’s redemptive truth. The modifier “of the truth” emphasizes the contrast between God’s unshakeable special revelation, on the one hand, and the Ephesian errorists’ worthless chatter on the other.
The expression “rightly handling” has caused much controversy. It is true that “to cut” is the primary meaning of the main element (the base) of the composite verb from which this present masculine participle (ὀρθοτομοῦντα) is derived. Nevertheless, the view that the composite verb retains either this literal sense or the near-literal sense “divide” (A.V.) is debatable. In a composite verb the meaning-emphasis may shift to the prefix, until in the semantic process the literal sense of the base is lost. Thus straight-cutting begins to mean straight-handling, handling aright. It is not so strange that, by an easy transition from the physical to the moral sphere, some such notion as “cutting a straight road or path” led in the course of time to the exclusively moral use of the term. Thus Prov. 11:5 (LXX) informs us that “the righteousness of the perfect cuts his way straight,” meaning: “keeps his way straight,” causes him to do what is right. Cf. Prov. 3:6 (LXX). Thus it is understandable that here in 2 Tim. 2:15 the meaning is, “handling aright.”
That the base (“to cut”) should lose its original, literal meaning when a prefix (“straight”) is added is not strange. Even without any affix the word “to cut” is frequently used in a non-literal sense. Thus, the Greek speaks of “cutting (taking) an oath,” “cutting (diluting) a liquid,” “cutting (working) a mine,” etc. He also uses the expression “cutting short” (bringing to a crisis), and “cutting the waves,” just as we do today. And compare our idioms “cutting a strange figure,” “cutting droll capers,” “cutting a pack of cards,” etc.
Returning to the composite verb, I would emphasize that the context confirms the meaning which nearly all authorities ascribe to it. In the light of verses 14 and 16 the idea which Paul wishes to convey is clearly this, “Handle the word of the truth rightly instead of waging thoroughly useless word-battles which upset the listeners, and instead of paying any attention to profane, empty-chatter.”
The man who handles the word of the truth properly does not change, pervert, mutilate, or distort it, neither does he use it with a wrong purpose in mind. On the contrary, he prayerfully interprets Scripture in the light of Scripture. He courageously, yet lovingly, applies its glorious meaning to concrete conditions and circumstances, doing this for the glory of God, the conversion of sinners, and the edification of believers.

CDC Advisers Recommend Against MMRV Combo Vaccine For Young Kids, Table Vote On Hep B Shot

The CDC should recommend only the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine, and not the measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (MMRV) vaccine—which also prevents chicken pox—for children ages younger than 4, ACIP said.

The vote was 8 to 3. Dr. Robert Malone recused himself because he was in the past a paid expert for plaintiffs suing Merck, which manufactures MMR and MMRV vaccines.

If Jim O’Neill, the deputy health secretary and acting CDC director, accepts the recommendation, the CDC would change its vaccine schedule.

The CDC currently recommends either the MMRV vaccine, or the MMR vaccine along with a separate varicella shot, for the first dose against measles. It says the MMR vaccine is the preferred option for children ages 12 to 47 months, because the MMRV vaccine “is associated with a higher risk for fever and febrile seizures.”

About 85 percent of children receive the MMR and varicella vaccines, compared with 15 percent who receive an MMRV vaccine, for the first dose.

After MMR vaccination, there is about one additional febrile seizure per 3,000 to 4,000 of those vaccinated, compared with unvaccinated children. MMRV vaccination increases that risk twofold among young children, Dr. John Su, a CDC immunization official, said in a presentation. There’s no evidence of an increased risk following dose two of the MMRV vaccine among children ages 4 to 6, he said.

The second dose of a measles vaccine is recommended on the CDC schedule for children ages 4 to 6.

GlaxoSmithKline and Merck produce MMR vaccines cleared in the United States, but Merck also makes the only available MMRV vaccine. The companies did not respond to requests for comment by publication time.

“Any policy decision that compromises the clarity or consistency of vaccination guidance for MMRV has the potential to further diminish public confidence,” a Merck official told the panel before the vote, after referencing falling vaccination rates among kindergartners.

Trump Admin Restores Tougher Citizenship Test Scrapped By Biden

The changes, announced on Sept. 17, largely restore the Naturalization Civics Test to a longer, tougher format implemented in late 2020, near the end of President Donald Trump’s first term. That version was discarded in 2021, shortly after President Joe Biden took office.

Under the revised test, applicants will need to answer 12 out of 20 questions correctly, rather than six out of 10, according to a notice from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The pool of potential questions has also been expanded from 100 to 128, with fewer that have simple, sometimes one-word answers. Officials say that about 75 percent of the questions remain the same or similar, and the other 25 percent covers new material.

The new questions include ones on the 10th Amendment, the significance of the Federalist Papers, the achievements of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the nature of Veterans Day and Memorial Day, the meaning of the national motto “E pluribus unum,” and examples of American innovation, such as the light bulb and the moon landing.

Some existing questions have altered acceptable answers. For instance, the current model answer to “Who does a U.S. Senator represent?” is “all people of the state.” On the revised test, the correct answer is limited to “citizens” of the state.

As before, the test will be given orally during an applicant’s citizenship interview. A key difference, however, is that immigration officers will be required to ask only as many questions as needed to determine whether an applicant has passed or failed.

The current rule requires them to ask all 20 questions, even if the outcome might already be clear.

The new test will apply to applicants who file on or after Oct. 20.

“American citizenship is the most sacred citizenship in the world and should only be reserved for aliens who will fully embrace our values and principles as a nation,” USCIS spokesman Matthew Tragesser said in the Sept. 17 statement announcing the changes.

He added that the revisions are necessary so that “the American people can be assured that those joining us as fellow citizens are fully assimilated and will contribute to America’s greatness.”

“These critical changes are the first of many,” Tragesser said.

He claims that over the past decade, “too many” mass shooters have identified as transgender, extending the pattern to other crimes like stabbings, ax attacks, and bank robberies. “It’s a mental illness,” Kelly asserts, emphasizing that transgender issues go beyond mass shootings to encompass a range of criminal activities.

Expanding on this, Kelly connects these concerns to movements like Black Lives Matter (BLM), which he labels “a trans movement.” He describes BLM protests as having a “whole undercurrent of transgenderism,” calling it “totally bizarre” and not solely about figures like George Floyd.

Kelly points to protests outside Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home following the leak of the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, deeming them “crazy” and illegal under federal law.

“You are not allowed to do it. There is a federal law that says you cannot parade in front of a judge’s home,” he explains, citing 18 US Code 1507, which prohibits picketing or parading near a judge’s residence with intent to influence judicial proceedings.

Kelly criticizes Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for inflammatory rhetoric: “I want to tell you, Gorsuch, I want to tell you, Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you.” He contrasts this with conservative rhetoric, noting, “For all their complaints about MAGA and how intense sometimes the rhetoric can get, no one on our side says this kind of stuff. Nobody.”

High-Profile Cases: From Assassination Attempts to Commutations

A key example Kelly highlights is Nicholas Roske (referred to as Nicholas Ros in the segment), who allegedly arrived at Kavanaugh’s home in 2022 armed with weapons, intent on assassinating the justice and his family. Kelly notes that Roske got alarmingly close: “He almost pulled it off.”

He reveals an update that Roske now identifies as transgender under the name Sophie, questioning if this confers “special status” in the legal system, such as placement in a women’s prison. Kelly blames authorities for failing to prevent the incident, accusing them of “playing dumb” despite knowing the risks.

Kelly also critiques the Biden administration’s response to such protests, quoting a spokesperson who defended “peaceful protest” while stumbling over words: “We have been pretty clear on this. The president has been very clear that we condemn uh any intimidation uh of uh of judges… Peaceful protest. Uh people should be able to be to be able to do that.” He mocks the articulation, reinforcing his view that the protests violated the law and bordered on a “riot.”

Shifting to another case, Kelly discusses Bradley Manning, who leaked classified documents and later transitioned to Chelsea Manning. Sentenced to 35 years, Manning’s term was commuted by President Barack Obama in 2017. Kelly questions the motive: “Why did they do that? Did it have to do with transgender?” He suggests Obama and Biden share a “soft spot for transgender,” quoting Biden’s message on Transgender Day of Visibility: “To everyone celebrating Transgender Day of Visibility, I want you to know that your president sees you… You’re so brave. You belong. And we have your back.” Kelly extends this to children, warning, “Children, we see you. Joe, you shouldn’t even be looking at kids.”

He speculates on the founding fathers’ reaction to transgender visibility events at the White House, including what he calls “lewd conduct right there on the White House lawn.” Kelly ties this back to violence, claiming transgender issues involving children were central to motives in attacks, referencing conservative commentator Charlie Kirk: “If you’re an adult, fine, but hands off the kids.”

The Furry Subculture and Its Ties to Recent Events

In the latter half of the segment, Kelly delves into the “furries” subculture, linking it to a recent shooter’s background. “What’s up with the furries?” he asks, explaining them as people interested in anthropomorphic animals—creatures with human traits, like speaking or walking on two legs, akin to “Bugs Bunny.” Many furries wear “fursuits” and support LGBTQ+ rights, with the community attracting transgender, shy, socially anxious, or neurodivergent individuals (e.g., those with autism, ADHD, or Tourette syndrome).

During his show yesterday, prominent conservative radio host Glenn Beck, who is a member of the Mormon Christian cult, explained to Dream City Church pastor Josh McPherson that evangelical Charlie Kirk and the LDS prophet Joseph Smith were the only people he considered “Christian martyrs” in American history:

McPherson: “Charlie’s political theory was anchored in biblical theology, and he, like, no one I’ve ever met had the ability to connect those dots in all of life. And so, as I’ve been talking with those guys all this long, they didn’t kill Charlie because he was a big personality. They didn’t kill Charlie because he was merely a big conservative voice. They killed Charlie Kirk because he was talking and the next generation was listening. He was pointing them to the glory of Jesus, the good news of the gospel, anchored in the truth of God’s Word. and that’s why they had to kill him.

Kirk and Smith’s death are not the same at all however. Let’s review Smith’s death, as summarized by Wiki and redditor negative_60, which we’ve amalgamated in this explainer:

William Law, a former member of the 1st Presidency, became disaffected when Joseph Smith attempted to make his wife, Jane Law, one of his polygamous brides.

William had disagreed with polygamy from the beginning, but had kept it confidential in order to protect Joseph. That all went out the window when Joseph approached Jane for a polygamous marriage behind Williams back. He decided to go public, and did so in a big way.

He purchased a printing press and started plans for a new newspaper, the Nauvoo Expositor. The newspaper’s first (and only) issue criticized Smith and other church leaders, correctly reporting that Smith was practicing polygamy, marrying the wives of other men, teaching a “plurality of Gods”, and alleging that he intended to set himself up to be crowned King by the Council of Fifty (an act seen as treasonous in America at the time)

In fact, based on sworn statements, the Expositor alleged that Smith married at least eight other men’s wives, and he had tried to marry the wives of some of the Expositor’s publishers.

Joseph was livid. He testified before the Nauvoo City Council that the Expositor was evil and warranted destruction. The council approved his use of force, and he called out the Nauvoo Legion to enact the smashing of the press.

This was seen as an attack on ‘freedom of the press’ by the Illinois state government. Governor Ford called for Joseph’s arrest, and after a bit of cat and mouse, Joseph surrendered. Joseph went to Carthage Jail.

He seems to have been under the impression that he could escape: at the time of his arrest he had over $30,000 (adjusted for inflation) in cash and promissory notes on his person.

Before he could go to trial, a mob of around 150 men surrounded the jail. The morning of the attack, Smith acquired a pistol that was smuggled in, as did his brother, Hyrum, who was in prison with him. The mob attacked the jail. Hyrum was killed almost instantly and after a brief shootout, which saw Smith wound multiple members of the mob, he was also riddled with bullets and killed.

Not quite like Charlie Kirk.

More Tolerance
Last week we saw the tolerance of the left in the shooting of Charlie Kirk. The FBI arrested two men after an incendiary device was left under a Fox News vehicle in Salt lake City. It’s unnerving that Utah looks like the “go to” place for leftist killers these days. I guess it’s a “target rich environment”?

Modern Parenting
Milwaukee police discovered six children, including a 2-month-old infant, locked in a storage unit. A 26-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man were taken into custody. One crazy commenter said, “This sounds like a cry for help, maybe they just needed help.” Um … no. There is no sense in which “locking children in a storage unit” can be construed as “We just need help.”

Another Celebrity Goes Down
ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel’s show off the air indefinitely after he said, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” In some sort of insane world, the left has been arguing that a conservative crazy shot what they deemed a conservative crazy … as if that make sense in some universe. Let’s be clear. He was not a conservative. His leanings were documented Left. The voices that have celebrated Kirk’s assassination and those who try to ascribe it to the Right are really baffling. But … I’m surprised ABC actually pulled him.

And Unicorns, Too
The story says, “The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Friday to let it limit passport sex markers for transgender and nonbinary individuals.” I’m not at all sure how the Supreme Court would determine that this is a constitutional question, since “transgender and nonbinary individuals” aren’t part of the document. Because, of course, “transgender and nonbinary individuals” didn’t exist in those days … and don’t actually exist today, except as “self-identified.”

Your Best Source for Fake News
Trump called antifa a “terrorist group” (actual story) and ordered a drone strike on Portland. The Southern Baptist Convention met this week and has made a radical swing toward liberalism when they lifted the ban on sex after marriage. Finally, the FBI is still debating whether or not they should investigate the “Trans Terrorist Murder Planning Committee” channel on Discord.

Must be true; I read it on the internet.
