SOCIALISM: Dangers (Part 7) | VCY

Welcome!

I’m Bub Kuns and today we’re talking about socialism.

Besides oppressing basic human rights and leading to mass poverty, socialism, at its core, is GODLESS.

But don’t take my word for it. Karl Marx, founder of the modern socialist movement, said, “The first requisite for the happiness of the people is the abolition of religion.” In other words, mankind can’t possibly be happy if God is in the picture.

But research consistently shows that people who are happiest in society are—drumroll, please—RELIGIOUS PEOPLE! In fact, a recent survey by Pew Research found that “[a]ctively religious people are more likely than their less-religious peers to describe themselves as “very happy.”

You see, acknowledging our Creator and living according to His design are the only ways to have a life that is both satisfying and meaningful.

As Psalm 40 says, “Blessed is that man that makes the Lord his trust.”

Now, what is another problem with socialism? We’ll discuss them another time.

SOCIALISM: Dangers (Part 6) | VCY

Welcome!

I’m Bub Kuns and today we’re talking about socialism.

Socialism promises “equal prosperity for all,” but, historically, socialist revolutions have led to political and religious oppression and POVERTY.

Take Venezuela, for example. Venezuela had a thriving economy in the 1970s, but socialist policies under dictators Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro — such as the government takeover of businesses and redistribution of wealth — have led to widespread impoverishment despite the country’s abundant natural resources.

Historian Lee Edwards said, “Venezuela’s economic catastrophe “dwarfs” any in U.S., European, or Latin American history. Ninety percent of Venezuelans live in poverty. Once Venezuela had the world’s largest proven oil reserves; today, its citizens need a wheelbarrow of bolivars to buy a loaf of bread.”

As Christian columnist Cal Thomas wrote, “Socialism’s promise of equality is mutually shared poverty.”

And what is another problem with socialism?— We’ll discuss them another time.

SOCIALISM: Dangers (Part 3) | VCY

Welcome!

I’m Bub Kuns, and we’re talking about socialism again.

One of socialism’s dangers is that it takes away workers’ incentive and punishes achievement.

Professor Ilya Somin, who immigrated from the Soviet Union in the 1970s, stated, “Even as the socialist system created opportunities for vast atrocities by the rulers, it also destroyed production incentives for ordinary people. In the absence of markets … there was little incentive for workers to either be productive or to focus on making goods that might actually be useful to consumers. Many people tried to do as little work as possible at their official jobs.”

But 2 Thessalonians 3:10 gives the principle, “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat” (ESV). It’s human nature to achieve when given incentives but to be unproductive without them.

And what are other problems with socialism? We’ll discuss them another time.

SOCIALISM: Dangers (Part 2) | VCY

Welcome!

I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about socialism again.

John Lennon’s popular 1970s song, “Imagine,” paints a dreamy picture of a utopian, socialistic world where there are “no possessions,” “greed, or hunger” with everybody “Livin’ life in peace” — a “brotherhood of man.” Very pointedly, the song also tells us to imagine there’s “no heaven,” “no hell.” and “no religion.” The song seeks to remove God from the world assuming that humans can reach this state of utopia on their own — through something like socialism. But, is socialism really all that wonderful?

Well, as historian Lee Edwards points out, young people often fail to understand the destruction — specifically, the historical death toll — that socialism has left behind wherever it’s been dominant: “When asked how many people have died under communism [the militant version of socialism], only 31 percent of Americans could provide the correct answer— ‘Over 100 million.’”

There are a number of other problems with socialism and we’ll discuss them another time.

SOCIALISM: Dangers (Part 1) | VCY

Welcome!

I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about socialism.

Socialism’s popularity is growing at an alarming rate — especially among youth. According to research by Axios, over HALF of young adults surveyed have a POSITIVE view of socialism and according to research firm YouGov, 60 percent of Millennials favor a “complete change of our economic system away from capitalism!”

So, what makes socialism so appealing to younger people?

Well, historian Lee Edwards suggests that youngsters have an idealistic view of socialism as a classless society where all people are treated equally, have all things in common, and have all their needs met. While all that SOUNDS good, historically IT HAS NEVER WORKED THAT WAY! In fact, socialism is responsible for destroying the work ethic of entire cultures, and communism — socialism’s militant version — is responsible for the deaths of millions around the world.

Just how many deaths? Well, we’ll discuss that next time.

CANCEL CULTURE: Understanding Its Danger (Part 3) | VCY

Welcome!

I’m Bub Kuns, and today we’re talking about “cancel culture” — the practice of marginalizing people who disagree with society’s secular worldview, oftentimes trying to SHAME them.

Take for instance, the Southern Poverty Law Center. Originally, an organization founded to promote racial equality, the SPLC now fixates on trying to “cancel” those who don’t share its leftist leanings — especially those with a Christian worldview. In fact, the SPLC website includes a “hate map” that unfairly targets numerous faith-based organizations — including the Family Research Council, Alliance Defending Freedom, and the Christian Action Network — simply for holding traditional Christian beliefs.

In contrast to that approach, Jesus told his disciples to be “wise as serpents and harmless as doves” when engaging society. Instead of shaming those who disagree with us, we’re to share God’s truth in love.

Of course, there are other problems with cancel culture, and we’ll discuss them another time.
