You know a Democrat is in serious trouble when they get negative coverage by a reliably left wing outlet like the Washington Post.

In the case of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, it wasn’t just a reporter or columnist calling out his budget proposal, it was the Editorial Board.

It seems they are concerned about the unfunded liabilities in the city’s pension programs. Johnson wants to create new taxes and raise some existing ones. The Washington Post sees this for what it is – a financial band-aid that won’t stop the bleeding.

From the Washington Post:

Chicago has lost its mind

Chicago has long-term structural problems with its finances, thanks in large part to wildly underfunded pensions. The country’s third-largest city has a history of using short-term gimmicks to paper over its problems, such as a notorious 2008 deal that sold off 75 years of future parking meter revenue for $1.15 billion, which was quickly spent. That deal is still hurting finances today, which should have taught local politicians that there is no substitute for serious fiscal reform. Alas, apparently not.

The city’s net operating budget increased almost 40 percent between 2019 and 2025, “subsidized in large part by temporary federal pandemic funding that kept the City financially afloat,” according to Grant McClintock of the Civic Federation. “The pandemic is over, but many of the programs and personnel positions established during that time remain, and without the benefit of the federal funding that previously supported them.”

Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) proposes to offset a $1.15 billion shortfall by taxing the businesses that anchor Chicago’s economy, borrowing and more gimmicks.

The mayor proposes to increase the tax on the lease of “personal property” like computers, vehicles and software from 11 percent to 14 percent, and to bring back the city’s “head tax,” which would result in large employers paying $33 per worker, per month.

By making it more expensive to do business or hire workers in the city, these measures threaten Chicago’s future economic growth and tax collections. These moves are especially reckless given that the Chicago Fed’s 12-month hiring outlook is the weakest it’s been since the pandemic. Gov. JB Pritzker (D) says the head tax would penalize employment.

Johnson was asked about this during a press event and rejected it, naturally. Watch:

Lori Lightfoot was a horrible mayor for Chicago, but Brandon Johnson somehow makes her look like a genius. How is that even possible?

Earlier this week, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker vowed to prosecute Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in a post-Trump era.

Pritzker made the comments during an interview with FOX 32 Chicago as ICE agents stepped up their efforts across the city of Chicago. The ICE agents are upholding the law by capturing illegal aliens and returning them to their home countries. Pritzker does not seem to understand this.

“The tables will turn one day,” Prtizker explained.

”These people should recognize that maybe they’re not gonna get prosecuted today, although we’re looking at doing that, but they may get prosecuted after the Trump administration because the statute of limitations would not have run out.”

On Wednesday night Stephen Miller joined Hannity to comment on Governor Pritzker’s outlandish remarks.

Stephen Miller, Deputy Chief for Policy under the Trump administration, did not hold back.

Stephen Miller: “He’s a fool and a moron—but more importantly, he hates America. You can’t love your country and then fight President Trump as he tries to keep murderers murdering.

President Trump is saying, ‘Let us work with you— with the FBI, with ICE, with the DEA, with the National Guard—to stop the killings in your city.’ And Pritzker is saying he wants to protect the murderers. The people that are shooting dozens and dozens of people every single week.

Chicago is more dangerous than Baghdad; it’s more dangerous than Mexico City.

So shame on Pritzker, and God bless President Trump for fighting for the American citizens of this country, Sean.”

Stephen Miller is correct.

Chicago Mayor Who Refused Trump’s Help on Crime Records Just 6.6% Approval | The Gateway Pundit

Chicago is witnessing one of the sharpest political collapses in recent memory.

A February survey by M3 Strategies placed Mayor Brandon Johnson’s approval rating at just 6.6%. Nearly 80% of voters said they viewed him unfavorably.

No modern mayor of Chicago has ever recorded such a low number, and few elected officials in U.S. history have polled worse.

The city’s problems are not abstract. Residents have grown frustrated with rising property taxes, a shrinking police force, and an ongoing illegal immigrant crisis that has overwhelmed public services.

More than 25,000 illegals have arrived since 2022, straining shelters and schools already stretched thin.

While Johnson created a unified shelter system with more than 7,000 beds, Chicagoans continue to see neighborhood facilities converted into makeshift housing.

Many view it as a sign that their own needs are secondary to city hall’s political agenda.

Public safety remains the defining issue. Johnson can point to official statistics showing progress: homicides are down nearly 30% compared with the previous year, and shootings citywide have trended downward in 2025.

But Chicagoans remain skeptical. Carjackings, robberies, and retail theft have become everyday concerns.

Headlines about brazen downtown crime reinforce the perception that the city is unsafe, regardless of improvements on paper.

In politics, perception often outweighs numbers—and Johnson has failed to convince voters that conditions are improving in their daily lives.

His refusal to accept assistance from the Trump administration, which offered to deploy the National Guard to help restore order, has only deepened frustration.

Economic concerns add to the discontent. Chicago has raised a series of new taxes and fees to plug budget gaps while struggling to maintain core services.

Businesses have left for neighboring states, citing both higher costs and crime.

Families that once saw Chicago as a city of opportunity now speak of leaving, adding to the sense of decline.

A mayor who promised a progressive revival is instead presiding over an exodus of confidence.

The depth of Johnson’s unpopularity makes governing difficult. With only 6.6% approval, he has lost the trust needed to rally the public behind new initiatives.

City council members, eyeing their own political futures, are less willing to align with him.

For a city facing structural challenges in crime, finances, and immigration, the absence of credible leadership compounds the crisis.

Chicago’s voters may not agree on solutions, but they have delivered a clear verdict on Brandon Johnson’s leadership.

The city’s next chapter will depend on whether change comes from within his administration—or from voters who decide that 6.6% is too low to ignore.
