Beijing’s Military Parade and the “Axis of Upheaval” | The Gateway Pundit

On September 3, 2025, China staged its largest-ever military parade to mark the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II. Far from a simple commemoration, the event was a calculated display of power. Beijing used the occasion to showcase its expanding military capabilities and position itself as the leader of a rival order to the U.S.-led system. Just as significant as the weapons on display was the coalition-building that surrounded the parade.

The parade followed directly on the heels of the largest-ever Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, held in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, where Xi hosted more than 20 world leaders. The SCO now counts 10 member states, governing 40 percent of the world’s population, and provided the diplomatic foundation for the parade’s show of unity. Notably, India attended the summit but not the parade.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Xi for the first time in seven years, pledging to improve bilateral ties based on “mutual respect, trust and sensitivities.” His outreach came partly in response to Trump’s 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods. Images of Modi, Xi, and Putin laughing together captured a striking moment of warmth from a leader long courted by Washington as a counterweight to China.

At the parade itself, Xi Jinping stood alongside Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un as goose-stepping soldiers filled Tiananmen Square. The message was unmistakable: authoritarian regimes are openly aligned against the United States and its allies. Analysts noted that the event “served notice that China wants to be seen as a peer to the United States and Russia in strategic deterrence” and highlighted Beijing’s pursuit of “integrated, multi-domain operations” across space, cyber, and the electromagnetic spectrum.

For the first time, Xi, Putin, and Kim appeared together in public, joined by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. This lineup embodied what observers call an “Axis of Upheaval,” China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, countries united less by ideology than by their shared opposition to Washington. For Kim Jong Un, it was also a milestone: his first multilateral diplomatic event, where he introduced his teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, signaling dynastic continuity.

Beyond these headline figures, the parade drew 26 world leaders, reinforcing the sense of an emerging bloc. Attendees included Myanmar’s junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Mongolia’s President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, Uzbekistan’s Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and Belarus’s Alexander Lukashenko. Southeast Asian leaders such as Vietnam’s Luong Cuong and Malaysia’s Anwar Ibrahim joined as well, alongside figures from Nepal, the Maldives, and Zimbabwe. Their participation signaled a growing willingness among U.S.-aligned or neutral states to lean toward Beijing’s orbit.

Xi used both the SCO summit and the parade to signal an alternative global order. Speaking to the assembled leaders, he declared: “The house rules of a few countries should not be imposed on others,” a clear rebuke to Washington. He further urged members to “oppose the Cold War mentality, block confrontation and bullying practices,” long-standing code for China’s criticism of U.S. policy.

Economically, Xi called for the creation of a new SCO development bank, pledging 2 billion RMB ($280 million) in grants and another 10 billion RMB ($1.4 billion) in loans. Some members agreed to pursue the bank as part of the bloc’s broader goal of building an alternative payment system to reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar.

Militarily, the alignment is already tangible. Iran and North Korea have supplied Moscow with weapons, and in Pyongyang’s case, troops, while China has provided economic and industrial support for Russia’s war effort. This practical cooperation underlines why Western observers increasingly see these states as an emerging anti-American axis.

Symbolism reinforced substance: Xi stood flanked by Putin and Kim in a historic show of unity, the first time a North Korean leader had attended a Chinese military parade in 66 years.

Chatham House assessed that Beijing views the SCO summit and Victory Day parade as platforms to advance its vision of global relations: a world where Western leadership is diminished and non-Western countries shape a multipolar order. Jonathan Czin, a Brookings analyst and former CIA China expert, described the joint attendance of Xi, Putin, Kim, and Pezeshkian as “disconcerting,” allowing them to present “a facade of partnership.” The optics of unity, even if not backed by deep coordination, amplified their challenge to the United States.

Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, issued a stark warning:

“This week’s spectacle in Beijing, where the world’s foremost dictators are calling for a new world order in front of goose-stepping troops, must be a wake-up call for the United States. We cannot be weak in the face of authoritarian aggression any longer and allow Putin, Xi, and their enablers to plunge the world into yet another era of conflict and war.”

President Trump responded on Truth Social with characteristic bluntness: “Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against the United States of America,” though he also reaffirmed his “very good relationship” with Xi Jinping.

Western leaders largely stayed away from the parade, with only two European leaders present: Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico. Their participation underscored Europe’s divisions, even as the broader West sought to distance itself from Beijing’s show of authoritarian solidarity.

‘We Were Commanded [by Allah] to Kill You’: The Persecution of Christians, June 2025

  • The attackers, chanting “Allahu Akbar,” attempted to storm St. Joseph’s Church, where 700 mostly Christian Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) were sleeping. — Nigeria.
  • Persecution of Christians across Africa continues with brutal intensity, especially in regions plagued by Muslim militancy… In the Democratic Republic of Congo, where roughly 95% of the population is Christian, Muslim groups are responsible for horrific violence. The European Parliament has labeled ISCAP, an ISIS affiliate, “the deadliest armed group in the DRC.”
  • “The horrific killing of Kashif Masih is not just a tragedy—it is a damning indictment of the justice system in Pakistan. That a man could be tortured to death under false allegations, and that the police failed to act promptly or conduct a proper investigation, shows the systemic discrimination Christians face daily. The failure to collect crucial evidence and the reluctance to pursue justice….” — britishasianchristians.org, June 2, 2025.
  • When the Christian couple reported the rape to Saddar Police Station, officer Muhammad Sikander tried to bribe them with Rs. 150,000 (about $500 USD) to drop the case and leave the area. When they refused, Intekhab was beaten. — Pakistan.
  • “The case is a tragic but familiar reminder of the dangerous intersection of gender-based violence and religious persecution. Sexual violence against minority women is not rare – it’s a systemic human rights emergency that is often met with silence and inaction…. These [Christian and non-Muslim] women are isolated, marginalized and viewed as disposable.” — morningstarnws.org, June 24, 2024, Pakistan.
  • “There’s no law in Pakistan that criminalizes forced faith conversion.” While the constitution guarantees freedom of religion, that freedom “is routinely violated when minors are coerced into Islam through abduction and sham marriages… [E]very delay in justice sends the message that Christian girls are disposable.” — Albert Patras, rights advocate, morningstarnews.org, June 23, 2025.
  • Islamic law makes it very difficult for all victims of rape, not only Christian women, to prove rape because it demands proof by four reliable male witnesses. — Sonja Dahlmans, author of “Hidden Crimes, Public Deception: The Epidemic of the Disappearance of Coptic Girls and Women in Egypt.”
  • On June 18, the European Parliament approved a €4 billion financial aid package to Egypt — despite that country’s mounting persecution of Christians, including a recent court ruling to evict monks and seize one of Christianity’s holiest sites: the 1,500-year-old Orthodox Monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai.
  • Human Rights Watch released a damning report exposing the systematic misuse of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws to target religious minorities—especially Christians and Ahmadis—as well as the poor. Titled “A Conspiracy to Grab the Land,” it details how false blasphemy accusations are weaponized to incite mob violence, displace vulnerable communities, and seize their property with near-total impunity.
  • On June 6, International Christian Concern exposed the widespread, systemic persecution of Christians living under Islamic law (sharia) across countries like Brunei, Iran, Yemen, Pakistan, and the Maldives.

JUST IN: Trump Announces US-Mediated ‘Full and Immediate Ceasefire’ Between Warring Nuclear Powers India and Pakistan | The Gateway Pundit

Trump’s diplomacy has brought PM’s Modi (India, left) and Sharif (Pakistan, right) together to a ceasefire.

The situation between warring neighbors (and nuclear powers) India and Pakistan seemed to be devolving into an open war, as the two countries targeted military bases and exchanged missile and drone attacks.

This military conflict arose after a deadly terrorist attack on tourists in the disputed Kashmir region, raising concerns of a full-blown military confrontation between the two nations that have Historically had a tumultuous relationship, marked by multiple conflicts since their partition in 1947.

But the efforts by the US Donald J. Trump administration have made a difference: after a full night of negotiations mediated by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, a ceasefire has been achieved.

Trump announced it first on Truth Social:

After that Secretary Rubio has posted on X:

After the US is got involved in de-escalation efforts, a seemingly-coordinated messaging started to appear from India and Pakistan, followed now by this sensational breakthrough.

Pakistan confirmed the ceasefire:

Then India also confirmed it:

Reuters reported:

“U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that India and Pakistan had agreed to a ‘full and immediate ceasefire’ after a fourth day of strikes and counter-strikes against each other’s military installations.

Pakistan’s foreign minister also said both countries had agreed to a ceasefire ‘with immediate effect’.”

PMs Sharif and Modi in happier times.

“The announcement came on a day when fears that the countries’ nuclear arsenals might come into play spiked as the Pakistan military said a top military and civil body overseeing its nuclear weapons would meet.

At the same time, officials from both sides showed a willingness for now to take a step back following the day’s exchanges, while the civilian death toll on both sides of the border mounted to 66.”

Warning: Stay Away from “YogaFaith”—So-Called Christian Yoga | From the Lighthouse

YogaFaith is an organization that has been around for more than a decade that teaches and promotes what they call “Christian Yoga.” However, as Lighthouse Trails has shown for many years, there is no such thing as Christian Yoga. It’s an oxymoron because the two terms are diametrically opposed to each other.

A number of years ago, we read an article by a Hindu professor (of Hindu University of America) titled “Yoga Renamed is Still Hindu.” In the article, Professor Subhas Tiwari stated:

The simple, immutable fact is that yoga originated from the Vedic or Hindu culture. Its techniques were not adopted by Hinduism, but originated from it. . . . Efforts to separate yoga from its spiritual center reveal ignorance of the goal of yoga. . . . If this attempt to co-opt yoga into their (Christians) own tradition continues, in several decades of incessantly spinning the untruth as truth through re-labelings such as “Christian yoga,” who will know that yoga is–or was–part of Hindu culture?

After reading that article, we e-mailed Dr. Tiwari and received a response from him. He gave us permission to share some of it with our readers:

Hello and Namaste,

Namaste is a universal Hindu greeting which recognizes and bows to that Divinity within you.

Mantra and its practice is a core component in Hinduism. The language of Sanskrit which predates any and all languages known to humanity, and which hasn’t evolved and became something other than what it has been from its inception, forms the oldest mantra, the first cosmic sound of OM (aum). One of the four sacred spiritual scriptures the Vedas, the Sama Veda is written in chants. The written forms of the Veda are pegged at 3500 to 5000+ BCE. (They are recited all over the world among Hindus exactly as they have been handed down). . . .

Hinduism and its offshoot spiritual traditions, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikkhism, have never chosen the path which states that we are superior to everyone else and therefore deserve to engage in crusades and conversionism on global scale. That would be incongruent to our core belief tenets which holds all creatures are part of the Divine creation, and equal in the eyes of that divine parent. The moment we lose sight or consciously choose to believe and behave otherwise means we are acting from a place of limitation, superiority, arrogance and according to Vedanta, from a place of individual and global ignorance, avidya. Imagine any religious or spiritual tradition which defines its strength based on converting that which is already divine in nature, and the audacity to claim that they are doing the work of that Divine? There is only one Divine.

Sincere Regards, Subhas

Professor Tiwari set the record straight. There is no such thing as “Christian” Yoga, even though a fast-growing number of Christian’s, especially Christian women, are involved in “Christian Yoga” classes through organizations such as YogaFaith.

Nearly twenty years ago, we posted a portion of an article titled “There Is No Christian Yoga” written by Yogi Baba Prem, who is a Hindu Yogi, a Vedavisharada trained in the traditional gurukural system. In his article, he stated:

It was quite astonishing to see on the flyer “Christian Yoga! This Thursday night. . . .” I could feel the wheels spinning in my brain. “Christian Yoga,” I thought. Now while Christians can practice yoga, I am not aware of any Christian teachings about yoga. Yoga is not a Judeo/Christian word! It is not a part of the Roman Catholic teachings and certainly not a part of protestant teachings. It is not found within the King James Version of the Bible. It is a Hindu word, or more correctly a Sanskrit word from the Vedic civilization. So how did we get “Christian Yoga”? (source)

Yoga is like a “gateway drug” because it can lead to more intense forms of occultic New Age meditation; and tragically, a growing number of Christians (and churches) are engaging in Yoga practices. If you know someone who is practicing “Christian Yoga” or any other Yoga activity, we encourage you to ask him or her to read the material Lighthouse Trails has provided, warning about Yoga. Two of our authors, Chris Lawson and Ray Yungen, have written excellent booklets on Yoga. These may be purchased inexpensively or can be printed for free from this site:

“YOGA and Christianity – Are They Compatible?” by Chris Lawson

YOGA: Exercise or Religion—Does it Matter? by Ray Yungen

We also have a database on Yoga with over 100 articles and reports. And if you have never watched Caryl Productions documentary called Yoga Uncoiled, we encourage you to do so. Caryl Matrisciana, who was raised in India and later became deeply involved in the New Age movement (before becoming a Christian believer) leaves no room for question in her film that “Christian Yoga” is a New Age practice and a great deception. Her film can be watched on YouTube for free or purchased as a DVD.

Incidentally, it’s worth noting that YogaFaith founder and lead trainer Michelle Thielen presented an online class in 2023 called “The Enneagram for Spiritual Formation.” Both of those practices (Enneagram and Spiritual Formation) are frequently addressed at Lighthouse Trails because of their New Age/occultic roots. Thielen has also been quoted in an article in Yoga Journal that was promoting Yoga in public schools. Thielen stated: “Sometimes I just have to scratch my head. . . . I’m like, “Christians, are you not reading your Bible? Because meditation is in there.” So is chanting, mudras, and even some of the yoga postures.”

Alert! A War Between India And Pakistan Could Erupt At Any Moment | End Of The American Dream

India and Pakistan both have nuclear weapons, and now they are on the verge of war.  It is being reported that India is considering a military response to a horrifying terror attack that occurred in Kashmir earlier this week, and Pakistani forces are already being mobilized in case that happens.  If a full-blown war erupts, it will be a really big deal.  247 million people live in Pakistan, and 1.4 billion people live in India.  So we are talking about a substantial chunk of the global population, and if nuclear weapons are used the death toll in a war between India and Pakistan would be off the charts.

This latest crisis started on Tuesday when terrorists associated with “The Resistance Front” killed 26 tourists in Kashmir

Suspected rebels killed at least 26 people on Tuesday in the picturesque tourist resort of Pahalgam in the deadliest such attack in a quarter-century in Indian-administered Kashmir. A statement issued in the name of The Resistance Front (TRF), which is believed to be an offshoot of the Pakistani-based Lashkar-e-Taiba armed group, claimed responsibility for the attack.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is promising to hunt the terrorists to the “ends of the earth”, and India’s government is accusing Pakistan’s government of “funding and encouraging terrorism in Kashmir”

Armed police and soldiers searched homes and forests for militants in Indian Kashmir on Friday and India’s army chief reviewed security there after the killing of 26 men at a tourist site – the worst attack on civilians in nearly two decades.

The attack triggered outrage and grief in India, along with calls for action against neighbour Pakistan, whom New Delhi accuses of funding and encouraging terrorism in Kashmir, a region both nations claim and have fought two wars over.

We have seen tensions between these two great nations reach a boiling point before, but never anything quite like this.

Following the terror attack, India immediately suspended a very important water treaty

On Wednesday, India suspended a water treaty governing the water flows of the Indus River and revoked the visas of Pakistani nationals within its borders. It also closed one of the only land border crossings between the two countries. Pakistan has responded by closing off its airspace to Indian planes and issuing a barrage of reciprocal visa revocations.

Millions of people in Pakistan are extremely dependent on water from the Indus River.

So it would create a major humanitarian crisis if India restricted or cut off the flow of water, but apparently that is what India has decided to do

The government has decided to stop the flow of Indus River water to Pakistan following the termination of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, in response to the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam carried out by Pakistan-based terrorists, sources said.

Yesterday, the Pakistani government warned that messing with the flow of water would be an “act of war”

Pakistan warned India on Thursday that it was committing an “act of war” by suspending a landmark water-sharing treaty in response to a deadly terror attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

The threat from Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office followed a number of diplomatic measures imposed by New Dehli on Islamabad as tensions flare between the neighboring nuclear powers.

We really need a third party to step in and mediate this crisis, because it could spiral out of control very quickly.

In fact, there has already been shooting.

On Friday morning, Indian forces and Pakistani forces “briefly exchanged fire”

Indian officials have confirmed Friday that Indian and Pakistani soldiers briefly exchanged fire along their highly militarized frontier in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, according to The Associated Press.

Small arms were used by both sides in the gunfight, and no casualties have as of yet been reported, a briefing by an Indian official indicated, in the first such live-fire incident since 2021. It also violates a pledge from the same year for the two nations to observe a ceasefire along the disputed Line of Control between Indian and Pakistani controlled areas of Kashmir.

The shooting has stopped for now, but social media is full of videos that show military equipment being moved toward the border.

And it is also an ominous sign that India has moved an aircraft carrier into the Arabian Sea

In addition, Pakistan “has issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen/Mariners) for the Arabian Sea and initiated a naval live fire exercise, while putting its military on full alert in anticipation of a possible military response by India in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack,” The Print, an Indian news outlet, reported.

India, meanwhile, has the aircraft carrier Vikrant in the Arabian Sea. While the vessel deployed before the Kashmir attack, it is now doing loops in the area as a possible contingency, posited Damien Symon, a geo-intelligence researcher for The Intel Lab intelligence consultancy.

We don’t know for certain whether India will conduct airstrikes or not.

For now, we are being told that “a variety of military options” are on the table…

“There are a variety of military options, short of a full-blown war, on the table,” the Times of India (TOI) reported, citing a senior military official. “It’s for the political leadership to take the final call. If there is a go-ahead, then the retaliatory strikes will be at a time and place of our choosing.”

India and Pakistan are not equally matched.

If India really starts pummeling Pakistan, would the Pakistanis feel a need to use their nukes?

Let’s hope that we never find out.

Meanwhile, President Trump continues to warn the world about what will happen if the Iranians do not give up their nuclear enrichment program…

During an interview with Time magazine, Trump was asked whether he was “worried” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would drag the U.S. into a war.

“No,” said the president, who continued his answer after the questioner attempted to change topics.

“[H]e may go into a war. But we’re not getting dragged in.”

Did that mean the U.S. will stay out if Israel goes into Iran?

“No, I didn’t say that,” Trump said. “You asked if he’d [Netanyahu] drag me in, like I’d go in unwillingly. No, I may go in very willingly if we can’t get a deal. If we don’t make a deal, I’ll be leading the pack.”

There will be yet another round of negotiations this weekend.

Let us hope that they go well.

Lastly, I wanted to mention the fact that a top Russian general was just assassinated not too far from Moscow

Russian Major General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in an IED bomb blast in the Moscow region on Friday.

This coincided with the planned peace talks between US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin.

According to Russia Today Moskalik was the Deputy Chief of Main Operations Directorate of General Staff of Russian Armed Forces.

Every time we take a step toward peace, something like this happens.

Ultimately, I don’t think that there is going to be peace in Ukraine.

The Russians and the Ukrainians are not even in the same universe when it comes to what a suitable peace agreement would look like, and neither side seems too keen on making significant compromises at this stage.

The Bee Explains: The H-1B Visa Controversy | Babylon Bee

Article Image

The American conservative movement, usually known for being well-organized and having zero infighting, has somehow descended into civil war over something called H-1B visas. Here is what you need to know about the controversy ripping everyone apart:

What is an H-1B visa?

Not to be confused with H1N1 swine flu, an H-1B visa allows people from India to come to America to build rockets and compete in spelling bees.

Can people who are not from India receive a visa?

The H-1B visa is not exclusive to residents of India. Central and South American residents are also eligible, as long as they can show proof that they are Indian.

How does an immigrant receive an H-1B visa?

The U.S. embassy in New Delhi hosts spelling bees and math competitions throughout the year. The spelling bee winner and the champion “mathlete” each receive an H-1B visa.

Why does Elon Musk want more H-1B visas to be awarded?

Musk needs more highly skilled engineers to build rockets, and he wants to make sure the people he hires won’t steal his steak.

Why are people opposed to having more H-1B visas?

Americans are concerned that it’s already hard enough for a white kid to win a spelling bee without importing a bunch more Indians. Additionally, there is concern that people from India are pretty smart and may take away some good jobs from Americans.

What sort of jobs could Americans lose out on?

The H-1B Visa is narrowly tailored to bring in only the top 0.01 percent of India’s engineers, doctors, and minimart clerks.

Can’t Americans just beat out the Indians here on an H-1B visa to get the job?

Have you tried beating an Indian kid at a spelling bee?

Should I be worried about losing my job?

No, they will need you for at least 6 months to help train Krishna.

Report Ranks Countries Where Religion Faces Highest Government and Social Persecution | ChurchLeaders

(RNS) — A report by Pew Research Center on international religious freedom named Egypt, Syria, Pakistan and Iraq as the countries where both government restrictions and social hostility most limit the ability of religious minorities to practice their faith.

Governmental attacks and social hostility toward various religions usually “go hand in hand,” said the report, the 15th annual edition of a report that tracks the evolution of governments restrictions on religion.

The report uses two indexes created by the center in 2007, the Government Restrictions Index and the Social Hostilities Index, to rank countries’ levels of government restrictions on religion and attitudes of societal groups and organizations toward religion.

RELATED: Christian Persecution Higher Than Ever as Open Doors’ World Watch List Marks 30 Years

The GRI focuses on 20 criteria, including government efforts to ban a faith, limit conversions and preaching, and preferential treatment of one or many religious groups. The SHI’s 13 criteria take into account mob violence, hostilities in the name of religion and religious bias crimes.

The study looks at the situation in 198 countries in 2022, the latest year for which data are available from such agencies as the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, the U.S. Department of State and the FBI. The report also contains findings from independent and nongovernmental organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, the Anti-Defamation League, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International.

In total, 24 countries were given high or very high GRI scores (4.5 or higher on a scale of 10) and high or very high SHI scores (higher than 3.6 out of 10). Close behind the four countries that scored very high on both scales were India, Israel and Nigeria.

“Countries with ‘high’ or ‘very high’ GRI and SHI scores, 2018-2022” (Graphic courtesy of Pew Research Center)

Thirty-two other countries, including Turkistan, Cuba and China, scored high or very high on government restrictions, but low or moderate on social hostility. Most were rated as “undemocratic” and “authoritarian” by The Economist magazine’s Democracy Index.

“Such regimes may tightly control religion as part of broader restrictions on civil liberties,” reads the report. Many Central Asian countries and post-Soviet countries fell into that category, noted Samirah Majumdar, the report’s lead researcher.

Besides ranking countries where religions were under the most pressure, the team that put together the report, part of the Pew-Templeton Global Religious Futures Project, tried to determine “whether countries with government restrictions tend to be places where they also have social hostilities; Do countries with relatively few government restrictions also tend to be places where they have relatively few social hostilities?” explained Majumdar.

Majumdar said that the results were inconclusive. “We can’t exactly determine a causal link, but there are some patterns we were able to observe in the different groupings,” she said. “A lot of those countries have had sectarian tensions and violence reported over the years. In some cases, government actions can go hand in hand with what is happening socially in those countries.”

Countries with low or moderate scores on both indexes — a GRI no higher than 4.4 out of 10 and an SHI between 0 and 3.5 — usually had populations under 60 million inhabitants.

The index factors the same criteria over the years, and the team relies on the same sources, allowing for comparisons from one year to another. From 2021 to 2022, median GRI and SHI scores stayed the same, but in sub-Saharan Africa, the GRI rose from 2.6 to 3.0 out of 10. In Middle Eastern and North African countries, the index went from 5.9 to 6.1.

Among the 45 countries that presented high or very high SHI scores, Nigeria was the first of the seven countries with very high levels, a result linked to gang violence against religious groups and violence by militant groups Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa, which rages in the Sahel desert.

Iraq, which ranks among the countries with both high GRI and SHI, also finds itself among the countries with the highest social hostilities, and has seen its social hostility score increase. The report attributed this to violence against religious minorities imprisoned by Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces. It also cited a 2024 Amnesty International report on outbreaks of gender-based violence in Iraqi Kurdistan, with many occurrences of women being killed by male family members, sometimes for converting to another religion.

“Religious groups faced at least 1 type of physical harassment in almost three-quarters of countries around the world in 2022” (Graphic courtesy of Pew Research Center)

According to the report, physical harassment against religious groups by government or social groups peaked in 2022. This category covered acts from verbal abuse to displacements, killings or damage to an organization’s property. The study highlighted 26,000 displaced people from Tibetan communities in China and continued gang violence targeting religious leaders by Haitian gangs.

Overall, the number of countries where physical harassment took place increased to 145 in 2022, against 137 countries in 2021.
