2016 Market Meltdown: We Have Never Seen A Year Start Quite Like This…

Time Abstract - Public DomainWe are about three weeks into 2016, and we are witnessing things that we have never seen before.  There were two emergency market shutdowns in China within the first four trading days of this year, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has never lost this many points within the first three weeks, and just yesterday we learned that global stocks had officially entered bear market territory.  Overall, more than 15 trillion dollars of global stock market wealth has been wiped out since last June.  And of course the markets are simply playing catch up with global economic reality.  The Baltic Dry Index just hit another new all-time record low today, Wal-Mart has announced that they are shutting down 269 stores, and initial jobless claims in the U.S. just surged to their highest level in six months.  So if things are this bad already, what will the rest of 2016 bring? ARTICLES I LIKE FROM AROUND THE WEB:
(Click title to go to full article)

The Character of the Christian: Above Reproach – “I told you last week about a new series that looks at the character of the Christian. What I mean to do is explore how the character qualifications of elders are actually God’s calling on all Christians. While elders are meant to exemplify these traits, all Christians are to display them. I want us to consider whether we actually do display these traits and to learn together how we can pray to have them in greater measure.”

If you can beat this sin, you can beat them all – “The past few days we’ve been shuddering at three R-Rated biblical images of the tongue: A Dangerous Fire, A World of Evil, and a Savage Beast. The fourth and final image that the Apostle James horrifies us with is that of a Polluted Spring.”

Beloved Brethren – “As glorious as it is to be brothers and sisters in Christ, that metaphor alone does not exhaust the description of believers’ relationship to one another. It goes even deeper than that. It’s true that the familial bond wrapped up in the term ‘brethren’ is objective; you don’t have a choice who your brothers and sisters are. And sometimes you don’t always like them, do you? And almost as if the Apostle Paul is thinking that very thing, he adds a second term of endearment to describe his relationship with his fellow-believers in Philippi. They are beloved.”

Pastoring Dementia Patients – “I was with some local pastors recently, thinking through dementia and dementia care in our churches. The following points came out of our discussion. I hope they help.”

Three Bible passages you don’t want to admit you don’t like (but kind of do) – “It’s okay to admit it. No one’s judging… Well, maybe some dude on Twitter is judging, but I’m not. There are some passages of Scripture that we all absolutely love and adore…”

“We thought, back then, that few abortions would ever be done. It’s a grim experience, going through an abortion, and we assumed a woman would choose one only as a last resort. This Week in Calvinism – January 22, 2016

  • Isaiah 5:4 turned out to be the stumbling block that caused one forum member to turn away from Calvinism. But if you can prove to him, using Isaiah 5 alone, that this passage does indeed teach determinism, he’s willing to reconsider his position. I’m reminded of a quote from Jonathan Swift: “It is useless to attempt to reason a man out of a thing he was never reasoned into.”
  • Regarding the hardening of Israel spoken of in the book of Deuteronomy, Jay Guin writes:

In short, for Israel to be hardened, God need only let them be their natural selves. He doesn’t have to override their free will and force them to reject him.

Now, this sound suspiciously like election, except that God never forces anyone to accept him. If we don’t really choose God, then our love isn’t real. For us to truly love God, we must be free not to love God. And so some of us will inevitably make the foolish choice to reject God.

There isn’t a Calvinist I know who would say that those who have had their heart of stone replaced by a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26) don’t really choose God.

  • Why do so many evangelicals support Donald Trump? Adele M. Stan puts the blame on “Calvinism’s veneration of the rich and damnation of the poor.” Trump is a billionaire, so he is obviously one of God’s elect. Yeah, that’s exactly how Calvinists think.
  • Roger Olson has a bone to pick with John Piper (shocking, right?) regarding that whole “Christian hedonism” thing, namely, the following statement by Piper: “It is unbiblical and arrogant to try to worship God for any other reason than the pleasure that is to be had in him” Dr. Olson concludes:

I worship and service God because, in the inimitable lyrics of my colleague Terry York he is “worthy of worship, worthy of praise.” I do look forward to the joy that comes from worshiping and serving God, but that is no part of my motive.

Remember, this is the same Roger Olson who once admitted that he would not worship God if it were proven that Calvinism is true, since “[s]uch a God would be a moral monster.”

  • Tim Challies discusses eight ways to grow in the fear of God.

Evangelicals infected with ‘inclusivism’ – Robert Jeffress

More than 800 Wheaton alumni are threatening to withdraw their financial support if Professor Layricia Hawkins (right) isn’t reinstated following her controversial statement in social media that Muslims and Christians worship the same God.

Pastor Robert Jeffress, senior pastor at First Baptist Church-Dallas, points out that Hawkins isn’t alone in her unorthodox thinking. He says more than half (57%) of evangelicals today believe there is more than one way to God other than through Christianity.

This ‘n’ That

  • Lyndon Unger is talking about modesty, a subject not discussed nearly enough, in my opinion.
  • Well, this isn’t right.
  • I really enjoyed this article over at Grace to You written by my friend, Cameron Buettel. Cameron clearly explains why “asking Jesus into your heart” is not a biblical idea.
  • You will appreciate Pastor Mike Abendroth’s latest video, where he explains that your mother doesn’t deserve to go to heaven (and neither do you!).
  • Here is your weekly dose of adorable (thanks, Lori!).
  • Okay, so the Packers lost the game in overtime (don’t get me started on that coin toss), but you have to admit, this play to tie the game was absolutely phenomenal.
  • How about a little refresher on the Old Testament?
  • I loved this sermon; it is simultaneously convicting and encouraging. Why integrity matters:

Muslims Coming to Christ Through God’s Word

“Christian aid groups working among refugees in Iraq and other places are reporting how God is using unimaginable pain to bring people to Christ,” writes Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis.

BibleFrom a human perspective, it’s very easy to feel discouraged in this day and age. It seems that no matter where we look around the world, there’s pain, suffering, and war. Our world longs for peace, but from a human viewpoint it seems hard (impossible, really) to find.

It’s important to remember that death and suffering was never originally part of God’s design. Everything was originally created “very good” (Genesis 1:31). It was Adam and Eve’s sin that brought death and suffering into God’s creation. The pain and suffering we see around us is a direct result of the rebellion of Adam and the continuing rebellion of his descendants.

We also need to remember that, even in the midst of pain, God is sovereign over circumstances. I’m reminded of a verse from Genesis, “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive” (Genesis 50:20). Right now in the Middle East, the radical Muslim group ISIS is terrorizing Christians, putting many of them to death. The horrors ISIS is inflicting on men, women, and children seems unfathomable to us in the West, yet this is a daily reality for many people. Well, out of these horrors God is working.

“I was 21 years old when I sat in a high-risk pregnancy clinic with my wife after her level-two ultrasound. Doctors told us Levi had all the markers for Down syndrome. After declining an amniocentesis, we were ushered straight away into the next room where a genetic counselor told us we had ‘options.’ She explained we were too far along at 22-weeks pregnant to terminate in Minnesota, but they could connect us with someone in Chicago or Phoenix. My wife and I sat shell-shocked – first from the news about our son’s diagnosis and second from the attempts to exterminate him.”

But no matter. Why Is The Fox Network Spending Millions To Bring The Devil Into Your Home?

Fox Network offering up a variety of pro-Satanic and LGBT-friendly publishing and programming

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7 (KJV)

Since it’s inception, the Fox network has portrayed itself as the home of conservatism and family values. But a closer look shows a completely different picture. In fact, they are doubling down on pro-Satanic and horror programming.

Last week, we told you about their new marquee show called “Lucifer“, a show about a cool, “hot looking” Devil who drives a Corvette and owns a nightclub. Today we find out that they are also prepping a new series based on the Exorcist. The drama is a modern reinvention of William Peter Blatty’s bestselling 1971 book, The Exorcist. The project is described as “a propulsive, serialized psychological thriller following two very different men tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession, and confronting the face of true evil.”

If this wasn’t bad enough, the rabbit hole goes deeper, a lot deeper

Rupert Murdoch’s media conglomerate News Corp. owns the publisher HarperCollins. HarperCollins bought Christian publisher Zondervan. Zondervan says that they are the largest publisher of Bibles in the world, including the Laodicean fanboy favorite the NIV “bible”. HarperCollins then bought Thomas Nelson Publishing, the largest general publisher of Christian material in the world. Combined they represent nearly half of all Christian reading material on the face of the earth. Let that thought think in. Rupert Murdoch with the Fox Network owns and controls half of all the world’s Christian publishing.

Now for the other shoe.

Rupert Murdoch’s empire also owns a company called Avon that publishes and promotes Anton Lavey’s book The Satanic Bible. Now do you see why they are pushing all this Satanic programming on their television network? It’s a full court press to make you comfortable with the Devil. They want you to think that the Devil is a joke and that Hell is not a real place. But it is.

When viewed in total, you can clearly see an organized effort by Rupert Murdoch to to use his wealth, influence and power to constantly and push a pro-Satanic and pro-LGBT agenda. Rupert Murdoch’s HarperCollins is also the publisher of ‘The Joy of Gay Sex’ and titles by anti-Christian author Richard Dawkins.

“And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.” Luke 13:32 (KJV)

The Fox network wants you to think of them as the “family channel”, and they don’t want you to dwell on the fact that they spend millions producing books, television and movies that glorify the Devil, promote the homosexual lifestyle, and trash biblical Christianity.  That makes them by definition both anti-family and anti-Christian.

It’s time to dump the Fox.

Understand The Times

Understand The Times has just posted a video alert. The purpose is to wake up the Church and the Body of Christ.

While the Reformation has been declared over by the alliance of Latter
Rain Charismatics, Catholic Charismatics and Pope Francis, there are others including Understand The Times that are concerned and are trying to warn the sheep.

The video clip we are featuring today is not new, but it is critical to
watch. Please click on the following link to watch the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRU9BQiQIVY

In a commentary we posted in early January, a video clip embedded in the
commentary showed Pope Francis declaring that all religions worship the same God.
http://www.understandthetimes.org/inthenews/1026na_emoruwrc.shtml

So, here is the question of the hour:

Will those who say the Reformation is over
and follow the Pope’s leading become part
of the One World Religion for peace the Pope
is advocating that embraces all religions?

Evangelical Intelligentsia leadership’s soft evangelicalism

From Berean Research:

Albert MohlerJD Hall of Pulpit & Pen reminds us that Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, “is the alpha-dog of the Reformed theological world, one of the architects of the SBC’s Conservative Resurgence, and is generally speaking the smartest person in the room (literally). Mohler’s theology is impeccably sound, but decisions in recent years have left many shaking their heads.” JD chides Mohler for what he believes are his troubling personal relationships and political denominational promotions.

And then there’s ERLC Research Fellow and Liberty University professor Karen Swallow-Prior. According to JD, Swallow-Prior, a self-described feminist, “has repeatedly shown a disregard for biblical holiness in her associations.” This includes “attending a ‘gay Christian’ film festival, partnering with unbelievers to advise animal rights groups [and] joining with feminists that bash complementarianism.”

Olympics Rule Change: Transgender Males Will Be Allowed to Compete as Women Without Reassignment Surgery

Posted: 24 Jan 2016 08:04 AM PST

There’s great news for adventurous male Olympic hopefuls: if they declare themselves women and reduce their testosterone below 10 nmol/L for at least 12 months prior to competition, they can compete against ladies. There’s even better news for these men; according to transgender guidelines approved by the International Olympic Committee, genitalia does not serve as a prerequisite. The guidelines state: “To require surgical anatomical changes as a pre-condition to participation is not necessary to preserve fair competition and may be inconsistent with developing legislation and notions of human rights.”

Cyd Zeigler at OutSports.com reported on the policy change. The IOC held a “Consensus Meeting on Sex Reassignment and Hyperandrogenism” in November at which they created the new guidelines, loosening prior rules adopted in 2004 to allow transgender athletes into the Games. The previous rules required that transgender athletes must have undergone external genitalia changes and removal of gonads, as well as obtaining legal recognition of their assigned sex from appropriate official authorities. The Gospel of Me and the Curse of Trusting in Man

Posted: 24 Jan 2016 07:47 AM PST

(Bert Farias) The first order of life for every minister and saint is to put your trust in the Lord—to keep your eyes on Jesus. That’s easy to say, easy to agree with, but so many fail to see the importance of such a simple statement and the transformation it can bring in our lives. “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord” (Jer. 17:7). “Cursed is the man who trusts in man” (Jer. 17:5). Modern Christians do not understand the distance of contrast between those statements. “God helps those who help themselves” is about the only verse many can quote concerning this theme. Oh, wait a minute, that’s not a Bible verse, is it?

American Christianity is infamous for what it has been able to do without God. We know how to raise money and make money; we’re slick with our sales and know how to promote our product or service; we know how to market our churches and ministries and on and on it goes. We are experts on almost everything, or at least we think and act like we are. We boast in our accomplishments. We love to talk about things we know, experiences we’ve had, our own status, important places we’ve been to, and important people we know. CONTINUE

Why Is Pope Francis So Determined To Bring “One World Religion”?

Posted: 24 Jan 2016 07:18 AM PST

Pope Francis, like all his recent predecessors, has expressed a desire for good relations among the world’s religions, as well as the various Christian churches, from the very beginning. Rarely, however, has that drive been as visible or intense as it is right now. We’re currently in the middle of a 10-day stretch that features three high-profile events: One could be described as fairly routine, but the other two are anything but.

On Jan. 17, Francis crossed Rome to visit the city’s historic Great Synagogue, his first visit to a Jewish place of worship since his election to the papacy in March 2013. It marked the third time a pontiff has gone to the Rome synagogue, located within the boundaries of what was once a papally-imposed Jewish ghetto. On Jan. 25, as popes do every year, Francis will go to Rome’s Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls to mark the close of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which falls on the feast of the conversion of St. Paul. Generally, it’s the most important annual occasion for popes to reflect on ecumenism. FULL REPORT

Migrants with more than one wife will get EXTRA benefits under new reforms

Posted: 24 Jan 2016 07:13 AM PST

Polygamous marriages, largely confined to Muslim families, are recognised in Britain only if they took place in countries where they are legal. At present additional wives can receive reduced individual income support, meaning the husband and his first wife receive up to £114.85. Subsequent spouses living under the same roof receive a reduced allowance of about £40 each. Under the new system of universal credit, polygamous marriages are not recognised at all.

But a House of Commons library paper, published earlier this month, has highlighted a loophole that will allow additional wives to claim a full single person’s allowance while the husband and his first wife still receive theirs. This could mean some polygamous households will receive more under universal credit than under the present benefit and tax credit system, the paper said. “The Government decided that the universal credit rules will not recognise additional partners in polygamous relationships,” the paper states. “This could potentially result in some polygamous households receiving more under universal credit than under the current benefit and tax credit system. Wealthy buying up luxury doomsday bunkers as world becomes more insane

Posted: 24 Jan 2016 06:09 AM PST

Recently, Tyler Allen, an Orlando, Florida-based sports bar and nightclub owner, handed over $3 million in cash for a luxury condo near Concordia, Kansas; it wasn’t the indoor swimming pool, hydroponic vegetable garden or 17-seat movie theater that impressed and attracted him. The main selling point, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, was not the 1,820-square-foot apartment at all, in fact. It was the underground, decommissioned missile silo buried 174 feet below — a silo capable of withstanding even a nuclear attack.

Like so many who are concerned about the direction and future of the country feel obliged to do when the media comes calling, Allen insisted to the WSJ that, hey, he’s no crazy conspiracy nut or “tinfoil hat-wearing” type. Rather, he says, he is concerned about growing security threats like a global health pandemic, cataclysmic weather and terrorist attacks. “There’s a Camp David for the president,” he told the paper. “If you’re at a certain level where you can afford it, you can get that, too.” FULL REPORT

Detroit collapsing into third world status as water supply becomes too toxic to drink… America’s infrastructure imploding

Posted: 24 Jan 2016 06:03 AM PST

Already pressured by a collapsing economy and a financial state of emergency, the people of Flint, Michigan, were also deprived of clean water in 2014, when the state decided to switch the city’s water source to the notoriously mucky Flint River in a bid to save money. In the absence of proper treatment, the water eroded the lead service lines and put all residents in danger. Although the lead-poisoned locals and children are now forced to deal with the consequences of this reckless act for the rest of their lives, the city and state officials responsible have yet to pay any noteworthy price.

As another man-made disaster quietly turns into past, the nearby rundown areas of Detroit are faced with a similar threat. Alongside miserable poverty, bad pipes and neglected water treatment systems are dragging Detroit into third-world status. After almost two years of drinking toxic water, the people of Flint were finally acknowledged in October 2015. In the meantime, the high levels of lead found in drinking water translated into brain damage, learning disabilities and pregnancy issues for the residents. Children have been permanently hindered in their natural development. But it took until January 2016 for the government to mobilize the National Guard and begin distributing bottled water and filters in Flint. FULL REPORT

Our Time is Short

Read: Recommitting Your Life To God and Jesus Christ – Restoration and Forgiveness With God and Jesus Christ (Updated Version)

What is The Gospel?

God made everything out of nothing, including you and me. His main purpose in creation was to bring him pleasure.

The chief way in which we as humanity do this is through loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

Instead of this, we have sinned against our loving Creator and acted in high-handed rebellion.

God has vowed that he will righteously and lovingly judge sinners with eternal death.

But God, being merciful, loving, gracious, and just, sent his own son, Jesus Christ, in the likeness of man to live as a man; fulfilling his perfect requirements in the place of sinners; loving, obeying, and enjoying him perfectly.

And further, his son bore the eternal judgment of God upon the cross of Calvary, as he satisfied the eternal anger of God, standing in the place of sinners. God treated Jesus as a sinner, though he was perfectly sinless, that he might declare sinners as perfect.

This glorious transaction occurs as the sinner puts their faith (dependence, trust) in the Lord Jesus Christ as their substitute. God then charges Christ’s perfection to the sinner, and no longer views him as an enemy but instead an adopted son covered in the perfect righteousness of his son.

God furnished proof that this sacrifice was accepted by raising Jesus from the dead.

God will judge the world in righteousness and all of those who are not covered in the righteousness of Christ, depending on him for forgiveness, will be forced to stand on their own to bear the eternal anger of God.

Therefore, all must turn from sin and receive Christ Jesus as Lord.

What Is the Gospel?

There is no greater message to be heard than that which we call the gospel. But as important as that is, it is often given to massive distortions or over simplifications. People think they’re preaching the gospel to you when they tell you, ‘you can have a purpose to your life’, or that ‘you can have meaning to your life’, or that ‘you can have a personal relationship with Jesus.’ All of those things are true, and they’re all important, but they don’t get to the heart of the gospel.

The gospel is called the ‘good news’ because it addresses the most serious problem that you and I have as human beings, and that problem is simply this: God is holy and He is just, and I’m not. And at the end of my life, I’m going to stand before a just and holy God, and I’ll be judged. And I’ll be judged either on the basis of my own righteousness–or lack of it –or the righteousness of another. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus lived a life of perfect righteousness, of perfect obedience to God, not for His own well being but for His people. He has done for me what I couldn’t possibly do for myself. But not only has He lived that life of perfect obedience, He offered Himself as a perfect sacrifice to satisfy the justice and the righteousness of God.

The great misconception in our day is this: that God isn’t concerned to protect His own integrity. He’s a kind of wishy-washy deity, who just waves a wand of forgiveness over everybody. No. For God to forgive you is a very costly matter. It cost the sacrifice of His own Son. So valuable was that sacrifice that God pronounced it valuable by raising Him from the dead – so that Christ died for us, He was raised for our justification. So the gospel is something objective. It is the message of who Jesus is and what He did. And it also has a subjective dimension. How are the benefits of Jesus subjectively appropriated to us? How do I get it? The Bible makes it clear that we are justified not by our works, not by our efforts, not by our deeds, but by faith–and by faith alone. The only way you can receive the benefit of Christ’s life and death is by putting your trust in Him–and in Him alone. You do that, you’re declared just by God, you’re adopted into His family, you’re forgiven of all of your sins, and you have begun your pilgrimage for eternity.

The Gospel on 5 Fingers

If you picked up a hitchhiker (not that I recommend doing that) and he saw a Bible on your car seat and said, “I’ve heard about this thing called the Gospel – can you explain it to me before you drop me off in one minute up the street?” What would you say?

Can you explain the gospel in 30 seconds? In one minute? In five minutes?

Here’s one way I have found helpful. The five main components of the gospel can be remembered on 5 fingers of one hand. Here they are:

1) Jesus’ birth
2) Jesus’ life
3) Jesus’ death
4) Jesus’ resurrection
5) Jesus’ ascension

Obviously each point can be elaborated on depending on how much time you have. Here’s the short version:

1) Jesus’ birth – Jesus, God himself, the creator of the universe, the Messiah, became a human being – took on flesh, and was born of a virgin.

2) Jesus’ life – Jesus lived a life of perfect obedience to his Father. Though he was tempted in every way as we are, he never once sinned.

3) Jesus’ death – on the cross, Jesus himself took all our sins and paid for them. God the father counted all our sins to Jesus as if he himself had personally committed them. Then Jesus bore God’s wrath towards sin – the punishment we deserved – as a substitute for us.

4) Jesus’ resurrection – within 3 days, Jesus rose physically from the dead, proving that his sacrifice for sins have been accepted by God, since the punishment for sin was death. Jesus was seen by numerous people after he rose including 500 at one time (1 Corinthians 15).

5) Jesus’ ascension – Jesus ascended physically into heaven where he reigns as King of kings and Lord of lords. And someday he will return to the earth.

That’s the gospel, the good news, and if we believe in Jesus Christ and this good news and call upon him he will save us from our sins and give us eternal life.

That’s a simple way to remember the gospel – five fingers. Even a child can do it. So ask God to give you opportunities to share his good news today.

Ready to start your new life with God?

Who do you think that I am?

With that brief question Jesus Christ confronted His followers with the most important issue they would ever face. He had spent much time with them and made some bold claims about His identity and authority. Now the time had come for them either to believe or deny His teachings.

Who do you say Jesus is? Your response to Him will determine not only your values and lifestyle, but your eternal destiny as well.
