The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose above 18,000 for the first time as faster-than-forecast growth in gross domestic product boosted confidence in the economy as the Federal Reserve pledges patience with interest rate increases.

An ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 64 percent of those surveyed support the decision to establish diplomatic relations with Havana, and a slightly larger number-68 percent-would like to end the decades-old trade embargo. In a CBS News poll, 54 percent of those surveyed said they approve of the decision to normalize relations with the island nation, while 28 percent said they disapproved.

The tumbling oil prices that have slashed Nigeria’s revenue and roiled currency and stock markets in Africa’s biggest economy may have a silver lining: an excuse for the government to scrap fuel subsidies that cost as much as $7 billion a year.

Oil is in a bear-market freefall that began in June, spearheading the longest commodity slump in at least a generation. The collapse means that instead of the surge in consumer prices that gold buyers have been expecting for much of the past decade, the U.S. is “dis-inflating,” according to Bill Gross, who used to run the world’s biggest bond fund.

U.S. home prices rose more than economists estimated in October as rising employment and falling interest rates boosted buyer demand. Prices climbed 0.6 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis from September.

NYC Mayor Makes Temporary Peace With Police

After the murder of two cops in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio offered a temporary olive branch to the police unions battling him over his disrespect for their profession, and he encouraged protesters to take a break. “We are in a very difficult moment. Our focus has to be on these families,” de Blasio said. “I think it’s a time for everyone to put aside political debates, put aside protests, put aside all of the things that we will talk about in all due time.” The two police officers, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, were executed by a man who was seeking revenge in the death of Eric Garner. Earlier in the month, the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association circulated a petition among its officers to ban de Blasio from their funerals if one of them fell in the line of duty. But a spokesman for the association said it would not argue with de Blasio “out of respect for the families of the fallen officers until after the funerals.” The protesters, however, declined to honor de Blasio’s request, although some have softened their rhetoric. Meanwhile, cops around the country fear another copycat attack. More…

Charlie Rangel: Blame the Tool

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) echoed a statement from the NAACP Legal Defense Fund after the murder of two NYPD police officers by advising leaders to focus their attention on the tool — guns — instead of the problem — racial discord fomented by Democrat elitists. According to the NAACP, “These two killings … like so many other unfortunate incidences of gun violence, provide a stark example of the need for sensible gun control measures. While some may suggest a causal link between these killings and the recent protests and activism focused on the serious issue of police violence against unarmed African Americans, we caution against escalating an already tense national state through rumor and conjecture.” Meanwhile, coming to the defense of NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, Rangel asserted, “[Police union leaders] should be … talking about how do insane people get firearms and not criticizing but seeing how we can stop insane people from getting an opportunity to get firearms to kill anybody. Two human beings were shot dead; we should not be pointing fingers at the mayor of the City of New York.” As Mark Alexander noted, however, “Officers Liu and Ramos were not murdered by ‘gun violence.’ Their murders were inspired by racist rhetoric.” Indeed, they likely would still be alive today if not for the racist enablers on the Left. The Al Sharpton Show Above All

Al Sharpton bears his fair share of responsibility for heating up racist rhetoric and causing discord that led to the murder of two NYPD officers over the weekend. In the wake of those murders, Sharpton made himself the issue, complaining that he received death threats, playing one such voicemail threat at a press conference. Then he lectured, “To blame the mayor and others is not what we need. The blame game will only lead to further kinds of venom and further division.” We wish we could say he’s learned his lesson — that his own blame game led to all kinds of division and violence — but such is not the case. In fact, he lamented that the two police deaths could distract from his mission: “We are now under intense threat from those who are misguided — from those who are trying to blame everyone from civil rights leaders to the mayor rather than deal with an ugly spirit that all of us need to fight.” Such appalling nonsense is utterly inappropriate for the moment. He continued, “There are those of us committed to nonviolence and making the system work. And there are those committed to anarchy and recklessness who could care less about the families of police or the families who have raised questions about police accountability.” Of primary importance is putting Sharpton and his ilk permanently out of business. No respectable politician of any stripe should be dealing with this clown.

Almost Anyone Could Have Stalled North Korean Internet

And then, the North Korean Internet went dark. On Monday, the minuscule Internet connection North Korea has with the rest of the world went blacker than the North Korean skyline at night, leaving some to wonder if the United States retaliated against the country it blames for hacking Sony Pictures over the political satire film, “The Interview.” Barack Obama told reporters Dec. 19, “They caused a lot of damage, and we will respond. We will respond proportionally, and we’ll respond in a place and time and manner that we choose.” But almost anyone, from a competent hacker in his mom’s basement to the NSA, could have derailed North Korea’s Internet because there are only about 1,000 Internet addresses in the country. By comparison, Afghanistan has about 100 times the number of Internet hookups. In other words, temporarily taking out the hermit kingdom’s access to YouTube is a weekend project — not exactly a proportional response. More…

Cuba Has No Plans to Change Communist Ways

While Congress has yet to debate lifting America’s trade restrictions on Cuba, island officials are declaring victory over what they consider a failed five-decade embargo. The lesson wasn’t lost on Iran, either. “The defense by the Cuban government and people of their revolutionary ideals over the past 50 years shows that policies of isolation and sanctions imposed by the major powers against the wishes of independent nations are ineffective,” bragged Iranian foreign ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Akfham. Moreover, according to The New York Times, Cuban dictator Raul Castro has no inclination to unclench his iron fist: “Castro declared victory for the Cuban Revolution on Saturday in a wide-ranging speech, thanking President Obama for ‘a new chapter’ while also reaffirming that restored relations with the United States did not mean the end of Communist rule in Cuba.” Barack Obama’s idea of foreign policy usually leaves our foes with more flex in their muscles, and our new dialogue with Cuba will be no different. The Castros will be laughing all the way to the bank. It will be up to the new Congress to decide the level of capitulation.

RIGHT ANALYSIS

Vermont Leads the Way

2014-12-23-ae186c91.jpg
…in scrapping single-payer health care

Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin, a Democrat, announced that his state is tabling the idea of pursuing single-payer health care — a more pleasant term for socialized medicine — citing that it would be too big a burden for his state’s citizens and businesses to bear. It would have cost the small state $2 billion to pull off the leftist magic trick of providing “free” health care for all its inhabitants. The only way to pay for that would have been an 11.5% payroll tax on businesses and a hike on the income tax to 9.5%. Thank goodness for federalism.

Though Shumlin called the decision “the greatest disappointment of my political life so far,” he bitterly clings to hope. “Medicare took 31 years to become law,” he said, “Medicaid took 50 years to pass. Social Security took 25 years. Our time will come.” Not exactly great examples to cite, since those very same entitlements are driving state and federal budgets off a fiscal cliff.

Shumlin, a lifelong statist, is unashamed of his stance, despite the fact that he has not technically been elected to a new term. He beat Republican Scott Milne by just 2,095 votes out of nearly 200,000 cast in the November election. And Vermont law states that any race without a clear majority must be decided by the state legislature.

Vermont’s heavily Democrat state legislature is sure to re-elect its enfeebled incumbent governor, but that isn’t stopping Milne from proudly proclaiming the death of the single-payer initiative. “I said during the debates,” Milne told National Review Online, “The difference between Peter Shumlin and Scott Milne is that I will tell you before the election that single-payer is dead.”

In fact, Shumlin likely wouldn’t have won had he disclosed the cost of single-payer health care before Election Day.

Milne campaigned against single-payer insurance, saying it would bankrupt the tiny state. Despite its history of being a haven for just-this-side-of-socialist crackpot ideas, many Green Mountain State citizens were concerned about the hit to their wallets necessary to make single-payer a reality. For many, “free” health care just wasn’t worth the high price.

Shumlin’s other big plan of offering universal pre-K went down in defeat for the same reason. It seems that this governor likes to offer his citizens programs that sound rosy, but when it comes time to put pen to paper in the accounting department he gets a dose of reality.

Milne called out Shumlin not only for his unworkable single-payer plan, but also for spending precious state fiscal resources on research to implement the plan. Vermont paid some $400,000 alone to a certain MIT professor who professes expertise in health policy. Yes, that would be the infamous Jonathan Gruber.

The fact that Vermont couldn’t pull off single-payer health care doesn’t bode well for the great leftist experiment nationwide, though it certainly highlights the indispensable virtues of federalism. Not only has Socialist Bernie Sanders represented the state in the House and Senate since 1991, but the small state prides itself as the nation’s “workers paradise.” If Vermont can’t make this socialist dream happen, then who can?

Single-payer is simply not a workable option in the U.S., despite the best attempts of the Obama administration through ObamaCare. It’s less efficient and more expensive than private care, and we can thank Vermont for displaying that so clearly.

Military Not Impressed by Commander in Chief

2014-12-23-d16670a7.jpg

Over the last six years of the Obama administration, the U.S. military has been forced to embrace significant policy changes that have amounted to nothing more than social engineering during a time of war. When a commander in chief and many members of Congress are more concerned with advancing the homosexual agenda and fighting the so-called “war on women” than they are with winning actual wars, there is sure to be dissent among the ranks.

A new Military Times survey of almost 2,300 active-duty service members finds just that. The Times reports, “Obama’s popularity — never high to begin with — has crumbled, falling from 35 percent in 2009 to just 15 percent this year, while his disapproval ratings have increased to 55 percent from 40 percent over that time.”

While the Military Times survey indicates there has been little upheaval and even increased support for these changes in policy — such as repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” — it remains to be seen what the long-term implications will be. Some military personnel chose to leave the service early as a result of the changes, but many acquiesced, and it appears that these professionals just don’t care all that much about someone else’s gender disorientation pathology. The military is, after all, a reflection of the culture.

If the military is undeterred by the social policy changes (for now), then what is the cause for Obama’s plummeting approval rating? It’s his foreign policy — or rather lack thereof. As National Review’s John Fund writes, “Much of the opposition to Obama has come from military members who believe he has been an inconsistent and flawed leader in foreign policy — for example, his 2011 removal of all troops in Iraq helped lead to the rise of the Islamic State, which then required a new U.S. intervention in the region.”

We have pilloried Obama’s foreign policy malfeasance extensively, and the military has grown more and more disgusted with this president specifically and the government in general. Simply put, our men and women in uniform do not want to put their lives on the line for a commander in chief who is so inept and determined to merely end wars rather than win them.

With the rise of the Islamic State, and the growing threat of Islamic extremism worldwide, the uniformed men and women who serve this nation deserve a clear objective so they can accomplish what is asked of them. The president’s half-hearted Operation Inherent Resolve isn’t going to cut it.

It is also worth mentioning that our troops are just as dissatisfied with the dysfunction in Congress. As noted by the Military Times survey, service members pay attention to politics and their elected officials more so than their civilian counterparts, with turnout for midterm elections “about 8 percentage points above civilian rates.” In addition to (or perhaps because of) this phenomenon, both the Republican and Democrat parties are less popular.

In the 2014 midterm elections, 28% of military voters identified as independent, up from 22% in 2006. Libertarian military voters increased to 9% in 2014, up from 3% in 2006. Most of this shift occurred at the expense of the Republican Party, which saw its share of military voters plummet from 49% in 2006 to 32% in 2014. Democrat support remains stuck in single digits.

Duke University political science professor Peter Feaver, a former George W. Bush National Security Council adviser, notes, “The military follows national trends but lags and skews conservative. … The libertarians’ sensibility fits with some of the military’s profile more naturally, particularly the ‘don’t tread on me’ kind of mentality.”

Patriots in uniform largely want to be left alone to do their jobs. They are tired of the commander in chief pandering to our enemies, and they are tired of Washington politicizing every military conflict. Whatever happened to applying overwhelming force to decimate our enemies? Perhaps the newly elected Congress can help shape a brighter future for our military, and 2016 may bring a momentous change in the White House.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948): “The greatest lessons in life, if we would but stoop and humble ourselves, we would learn not from grown-up learned men, but from the so-called ignorant children.”

Columnist Arnold Ahlert: “[T]he overwhelming majority are well aware of the reality that it isn’t Tea Partiers or conservatives or anyone else on the American right manning the ramparts in search of ‘social justice’ that is neither social, nor just. The outpouring of hate and rationalization, with ample dollops of faux surprise that murderous rhetoric fuels murderous reality, emanates wholly from the left side of the American divide. And as I have maintained in a couple of previous columns, it is an appallingly bankrupt ideology on its last legs, as one ugly manifestation after another can no longer be excused or ignored. A nation of fundamentally decent people of every race, color, creed and gender is rapidly reaching the point of permanent alienation from those whose power, profit and prestige depend on keeping Americans as angry and divided as possible. And the shorter their time gets, the more transparent their wretchedness becomes. Their self-anointed aura of legitimacy has been irrevocably tarnished. ‘What do we want? Dead cops. When do we want it? Now!’ is a stone-cold loser.”

Columnist Thomas Sowell: “It is a painful irony that, on the eve of the murders of … two police officers in New York, some of the city’s police were already saying that, in the event of their deaths, they did not want Mayor Bill de Blasio to attend their funerals. … Mayor de Blasio has made anti-police comments with Al Sharpton seated at his side. … Make no mistake about it. There is political mileage to be made siding with demagogues like Al Sharpton who, as demagogue-in-chief, has been invited to the White House dozens of times by its commander-in-chief. … Let those who have laid a guilt trip on people in our times, for evils done by other people in past centuries, at least face their own responsibility for the evil consequences of their own notions and policies. If they won’t do it, then the rest of us need to stop listening gullibly to what they are saying. The race card is nothing to play with. It can ruin us all.”

Comedian Jimmy Fallon: “The U.S. is re-establishing relations with Cuba. But before President Obama can lift the embargo, it will need approval from the Republican-controlled Congress — or as Republicans who called Obama said, ‘Close, but no cigar.'”

BOMBSHELL: Obama Paid $5 Billion And Released 5 Taliban Terrorists For Deserter Bergdahl (VIDEO)

Bill O’Reilly Talks About Obama Admin Prisoner Swap Bowe Bergdahl

Lt. Colonel Tony Shaffer and Ret. Col. David Hunt joined Bill O’Reilly to give an update on the Bowe Bergdahl prisoner swap. Lt. Colonel Shaffer told Bill the Obama administration paid $5 billion and released five top Taliban Gitmo detainees in exchange for deserter Bowe Bergdahl.

Obama celebrated the release of deserter Bowe Bergdahl with a White House press conference in the Rose Garden in May 2014.

Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer, who was part of the negotiations, told Bill O’Reilly the US paid out $5 billion and traded five top Taliban detainees for Bergdahl.

Bill O’Reilly: Let me just stop you. There were three trade scenarios, there were three things they could have done. You were involved to try to work that out to some extent?

Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer: Not all of them involved trade. One of them essentially was a direct action. One of them involved my aspect, which was not again a trade. It was something working the issue. And, obviously the one the president went with was the $5 billion to Qatar and the trade of the five Taliban.

O’Reilly: Are you surprised this report… Why hasn’t been released? The Pentagon, they’re not supposed to be political.

Lt. Col. Shaffer: Bill, I understand General Dahl, the investigating officer did an incredible job… I understand he confirmed what was in previous report… Effectively, he deserted.

Al Sharpton Incited Anti-Police Violence Now Seeks Police Protection (VIDEO)

“What do we want??….DEAD COPS! When do we want them??…NOW!!!”

Race baiting, like all con games and scams, can get pretty confusing when you tell too many stories and have too many irons in the fire. Ever watch someone do the “shell game” on Broadway and 6th? After while, you really cannot recall which shell the pea is under. So it is with Al Sharpton’s current self-created, self-inflicted mess that he now finds himself in.

al-sharpton-millions-march-nyc-2014-chants-what-do-we-want-dead-cops-now-race-baiter

Since the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, Al Sharpton and his team of race bating hate inciters have travelled across the mid-west and northeast hold rallies and protest marches against police violence. The video below shows the fruit of his last anti-cop rally held in NYC on December 13th:

He has, time and again, painted and portrayed local law enforcement – the cops – as the bullying bad guys who do nothing but kill people of color for the fun of it. Al would also like you to forget that just two weeks ago, at his Million Marchers event in New York City, his followers chanted:

“What do we want??….DEAD COPS! When do we want them??…NOW!!!”

Well, it would seem that the “Reverend” Al and his crew were granted their wish. 2 Brooklyn cops were executed as they sat in their patrol car last Saturday night by one of Sharpton’s more enthusiastic followers. Will others follow that example? Almost assuredly. He has also begun to receive death threats, to which he commented at a recent press conference:

“”The language is ‘Hey N word, stop killing innocent people, I’m going to get you,” and I have several like this,” he said. “We are now under intense threat from those that are misguided, by those that are trying to blame everyone from civil rights leaders to the mayor rather than deal with an ugly spirit that all of us need to fight.”

That “ugly spirit” he says we “need to fight” was created by him and all his race baiting buddies. The irony of it all is that now Sharpton is seeking protection from, not only local law enforcement, but from the FBI as well. The same people he makes a living off of by tearing them down and vilifying is now the very same people he seeks to be protected by.

In the meantime, attacks against local law enforcement will continue as long as people like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson fan the fires of racism and class division.

 Words of Comfort: Faith snoozes.

In the Book of Acts we see that Peter lay soundly asleep in Herod’s prison. This is faith in action. Faith snoozes, even in a storm. Stephen had been stoned, James had just been killed with a sword, . . . and Peter sleeps like a parishioner in the back row of a dead church. He was bound with chains between two soldiers. More guards stood before the door of the prison. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and stood by him, “and a light shined in the prison.” There is a strong inference that the light didn’t awaken Peter from his sleep, because the Scriptures then tell us that the angel struck him on the side. As he arose, his chains fell off, he girded himself, tied on his shoes, put on his garment, and followed the angel. After that, the iron gate leading to the city opened of its own accord, and Peter was free. The sinner is in the prison of his sins. He is taken captive by the devil. He is bound by the chains of sin, under the sentence of death. He is asleep in his sins. He lives in a dream world. But it isn’t the gospel light that will awaken him. How can “Good News” alarm a sinner? Rather, the Law must strike him. He needs to be struck with the lightning of Sinai and awakened by its thunderings. That will rouse him to his plight of being on the threshold of death. Then he will arise and the gospel will remove the chains of sin and death. It will be “the power of God unto salvation.” Then he will gird himself with truth, tie on his gospel shoes, put on his garment of righteousness, follow the Lord, and the iron gate of the Celestial City will open of its own accord.

Who does your email belong to?

What does a search warrant for an email get you? It doesn’t get you an email — an email isn’t a physical object. What it gets you is access to the server where the email “lives.” Does it matter, then, where the server is located? Are some servers, and the emails in them, outside the reach of U.S. law? Those are the hard questions confronting the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in United States v. Microsoft Corp. As arcane as it may sound, the case has a great deal to tell us about the tech sector’s views on privacy and surveillance — and about the ways the landscape of privacy law may be about to change irrevocably. In December 2013, federal agents conducting a drug investigation issued a warrant to Microsoft: Turn over emails from an Outlook account belonging to a suspect. Microsoft refused: The emails weren’t within U.S. jurisdiction, because the server farm hosting them was housed in Dublin. A magistrate judge and a federal district court both ordered the company to give up the emails. Both times, Microsoft refused and appealed. More

PROPHECY WATCH: Temple Institute Produces Pure Olive Oil For Use In Third Jewish Temple

“Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamps to burn continually.” Leviticus 24:2

For the past 30 years, the Temple Institute in Jerusalem, Israel, has been on a prophetic mission to prepare the world for the creation of the Third Jewish Temple. They have worked diligently to create, according to strict Levitical law, the garments, furniture, and instruments of worship that will be needed. Today, NTEB sources in Israel have received word that the pure olive oil required for the burning of the Temple lamps has been produced and is being stored in Jerusalem in anticipation of use in the coming Temple. Leafy green vegetables improve heart function and reduce diabetes and obesity risk

Three independent studies have linked leafy green vegetables to reduced health risks associated with obesity, diabetes and heart complications, reinforcing the benefits of consuming a diet rich in such foods. In particular, the scientists involved in these University of Southampton and Cambridge studies point to nitrate as a key factor that makes these vegetables so effective. According to Dr. Andrew Murray of the University of Cambridge, “There have been a great many findings demonstrating a role for nitrate in reducing blood pressure and regulating the body’s metabolism. These studies represent three further ways in which simple changes in the diet can modify people’s risk of type 2 diabetes and obesity as well as potentially alleviating symptoms of existing cardiovascular conditions to achieve an overall healthier life. Franklin Graham: Are We in the Last Hours Before Christ’s Return?

As you watch the news, do you feel as I do—that it seems the world is coming apart at the seams? There appears to be no end to the bad news. The killing of Christians by Muslims from Indonesia to Bangladesh to Pakistan. China tearing down church buildings. Christians tortured, beheaded and crucified in Iraq, with villages burned and churches destroyed, and much the same in Syria. American pastor Saeed Abedini is still imprisoned in Iran for his faith. Throughout Northern Africa, the Middle East, and many parts of the world, the church of Jesus Christ—and anyone or any group who bears His Name—is under attack. In our own country as well, there is great opposition to the church of Jesus Christ. We see this throughout the media, the entertainment industry, government and politics. More

13 Pro-Gay Bakers Refuse Christian Wedding Cake Order

After seeing Christian-owned bakeries pay a severe price for refusing gay wedding customers, Theodore Shoebat decided to see how tolerant gay-owned bakeries really are when the shoe is on the other foot. It turns out, not so tolerant. Shoebat, communications director for Rescue Christians, called 13 pro-gay bakeries and asked them if they would bake a cake—or a cookie or even a pie— donning the words “gay marriage is wrong” for a traditional marriage appreciation event. Not one of them would oblige—and at least one of them went on a profane rant about “hypocritical Christians.” What motivated Shoebat to launch this unscientific experiment? It seems he took exception to a pro-gay watchdog in Ireland that launched proceedings against a Christian-owned bakery for refusing to make a cake for an equality campaign earlier this year. More

Russia Warns: Any Move to Join NATO Makes Ukraine a ‘Potential Enemy’

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s bid to drop the country’s official “non-aligned” status amounts to an application to join NATO and therefore makes Ukraine a “potential enemy” of Russia, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev warned on Tuesday. The comment, posted on Medvedev’s Facebook page, was the strongest Russian reaction yet to the move by Ukraine’s new leader to reverse his Moscow-backed predecessor’s 2010 decision formally declaring the country to be non-aligned. Legislation to end the non-aligned policy was introduced in the parliament in Kiev, the Verkhovna Rada, last week. “[The] Ukrainian president has submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a bill on dropping Ukraine’s non-aligned status,” wrote Medvedev. “Essentially, this is a bid to join NATO, which turns Ukraine into a potential enemy of Russia.” More

Why Russia’s Emerging Borei-Class Submarine Fleet is a Fearsome Nuclear Weapon at Vladimir Putin’s Disposal

Russia plans to commission eight Borei-class submarines that will be at the disposal of President Vladimir Putin by 2020. The Kremlin characterises the subs as “the backbone of Russia’s naval strategic forces for the coming decades.” The Borei subs, also known as Dolgorukiy-class, is being advertised by Moscow as a strategic nuclear deterrent, according to a report by ITAR-TASS news agency, in the same manner that Putin had described the 80 plus intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) that his country will acquire by 2015 as potent weapons against aggressions directed to Russia. Ukraine takes historic step toward NATO, Russia Furious!

Ukraine took a historic step toward NATO on Tuesday in a parliamentary vote that stoked Russia’s anger ahead of talks on ending the ex-Soviet state’s separatist war. Lawmakers in the government-controlled chamber overwhelmingly adopted a bill dropping Ukraine’s non-aligned status — a classification given to states such as Switzerland that refuse to join military alliances and thus play no part in wars. President Petro Poroshenko had vowed to put Ukraine under Western military protection after winning an election called in the wake of the February ouster in Kiev of a Moscow-backed president. More

Taiwan launches its largest ever missile ship

Taiwan on Tuesday launched its largest ever missile ship Tuesday as the island strives to modernise its armed forces in response to a perceived threat from China. The 500-tonne corvette named ‘Tuo Chiang’ — ‘Tuo River’ — is the first of its kind ever produced by Taiwan and was touted by defence minister Yen Ming as “the fastest and most powerful” in Asia. Armed with 16 missiles including eight supersonic Hsiung-feng III (Brave Wind) anti-ship missiles, it will boost Taiwan’s defence capabilities against its giant neighbour, which considers the island part of China’s territory awaiting to be reunited by force if necessary. ISIS Closing in on Israel from the North and the South

The war against ISIS is taking a dangerous, perhaps inevitable turn. The terror organization has been keen to expand to southern Syria and the Syrian capital of Damascus. Now it says it has recruited three Syrian rebel groups operating in the south of the country in an area bordering the Israeli occupied Golan Heights — that have switched their loyalties to ISIS. This switch means that Israel, the U.S.’s closes ally in the Middle East, could be threatened from the southwest by the Egyptian ISIS group of Ansar Bait al-Maqdis in Sinai and by ISIS in southern Syria. The ISIS war is not going well at all for the US-led alliance in Syria. ISIS and al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria, are still the dominant rebel groups in the country. The U.S.-backed Free Syrian Army is still not a reliable fighting force. More

The McAvany Intel Memo

[Author of The Collapse of Complex Societies Joseph] Tainter explains his analysis of the fall of empires and his reason for “complexity” being the ultimate culprit: “In ancient societies that I studied, for example the Roman Empire, the great problem that they faced was when they would have to incur very high costs just to maintain the status quo. (They) invest very high amounts in solving problems that don’t yield a new positive return, but instead simply allow them to maintain what they’ve already got. This decreases the net benefit of being a complex society.”

Here is how Tainter describes his view in graphical form in his book:

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/716/8544970/files/2014/12/img_1553.png

Ugo Bardi summarizes Tainter’s theory that complexity is the ultimate destroyer of all empires as follows:

“The point that Tainter makes, quite correctly, in his book is that it is hard to see the fall of such a complex thing as an empire as due to a single cause. A complex entity should fall in a complex manner, and I think it is correct. In Tainter’s view, societies always face crisis and challenges of various kinds. The answer to these crises and challenges is to build up structures – say, bureaucratic or military – in response. Each time a crisis is faced and solved, society finds itself with an extra layer of complexity.

“Now, Tainter says, as complexity increases, the benefit of this extra complexity starts going down – he calls it ‘the marginal benefit of complexity.’ That is because complexity has a cost – it costs energy to maintain complex systems. As you keep increasing complexity, this benefit becomes negative. The cost of complexity overtakes its benefit. At some moment, the burden of these complex structures is so great that the whole society crashes down – it collapses.”

A Cyber War With North Korea And An Economic War With Russia

North KoreaIn addition to all of our wars in the Middle East and the war that has erupted on the streets of America, we are now engaged in a cyber war with North Korea and an economic war with Russia. Without a doubt, the United States has the capability to do a tremendous amount of damage to both of them. But what about the damage that they could potentially do to us? We have a society that is absolutely teeming with soft targets. Our Internet infrastructure is extremely vulnerable, our debt-based economic system is already teetering on the edge of disaster, and government officials freely admit that security at key facilities such as power plants is sorely lacking. And these kinds of bitter conflicts have a way of escalating. The North Koreans and the Russians are both very proud, and neither one is going to back down any time soon. If a foreign power wanted to really make us hurt, it wouldn’t take much imagination at all. There are thousands of ways to do it. So Americans should not just smugly assume that we are untouchable. In a war, it is often those that are overconfident that get hurt the worst. (Read More….)

Surprise! The Rich Are Now Richer Than Everyone Else By the Widest Margin Since We Started Keeping Track

This explains why, despite added jobs and better earnings reports, a majority of Americans are still not cheery about the economy—the middle-class and low-income population have yet to really start their recoveries. (Misra, CityLab)

Christmas: Something Greater than the Temple is Here
Over the past two weeks, I’ve been considering Christmas according to John, as John gives us a fresh, theological look into the significance of Christmas in the opening of his Gospel. My goal has been to fight against the familiarity of Christmas and cause us to be properly affected by the glory of the incarnation as John presents it, particularly in John 1:14.

Will Asteroids Wipe Out Humanity? By Ken Ham
Recently, I wrote about Stephen Hawking’s concerns that artificial intelligence might someday wipe out the human race. Well, he is not the only one worried that humanity might be cataclysmically destroyed. According to The Telegraph (UK), Richard Dawkins and 100 other experts are worried that a massive asteroid impact may destroy life as we know it. Earlier this year Bill Nye expressed similar concerns in a YouTube video.

It’s WAR On The Streets Of America
Make no mistake – there is now a state of open warfare on the streets of America. Earlier this year it was being reported that the number of police officers killed on the job was up 40 percent in 2014, and that was before all of the civil unrest caused by the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. At this point, attacks on police officers are becoming a frequent occurrence all over the country, but no incident has stunned the nation as much as the “execution-style” murder of two NYPD officers on Saturday by a radical Islamic gunman identified as Ismaaiyl Brinsley.

Surviving Unbridled Wickedness
Think about our country. Where are the godly? Where are the people who deny themselves, take up their crosses, and follow Christ (Mk 8:34)? The percentage of true disciples is dreadfully low. And wouldn’t you agree that people’s speech is frequently dishonest? I’m not just talking about political ads! I have in mind journalists who sensationalize the story instead of telling it accurately. Or online sellers who intentionally mislead potential buyers.

Armoury Radio with Pastor Michael John Beasley:
The holiday season often invites discussions about the meaning and significance of Christ’s 1st advent. Such discussions provide important opportunities to speak with others about what it means to be a genuine disciple of Christ. The fact is that many men who “confess” the name of Christ have never faced the realities of the Gospel message at all. For many in America, “Christmas” is nothing more than a cultural celebration, and many merchants see it as a source of end-of-year retail profits. However, through the fog and haze of it all, genuine believers progress in a very different pathway – one that maintains a steady course of joyful confession of Jesus, 365 days a year. But what exactly does it mean to “confess” Jesus? The Apostle John utilizes this term in a very profound way in 1 John 4:15. Whatever conversations you will have with others this week, please consider what it means to confess Christ as you communicate the Gospel with others.

Steel on Steel with John Loeffler:
Merry Christmas everyone! Opening the show this week is a narratively boralogue. John reveals the hypocrisy of the politically correct narrative which states that all worldviews are relative and none of them proclaim the truth – except of course for theirs! The Justin Peters Program:
Hermeneutics – Proclamation
Well, this program wraps up our series on Hermeneutics. Hopefully we have gained some knowledge and are appropriating that knowledge. So now what? Now it is time to proclaim that knowledge. In Ezra 7 we see that the prophet “studied the law of the Lord, practiced it, and taught it to Israel.” This is the proper order. We should study, practice what we know and then teach it – proclaim it – to others.

CultureWatch: France, Sharia and Jihad

by Bill Muehlenberg

Islam in Europe is a huge problem, and getting worse by the day. If all Muslims coming to the West readily accepted and embraced our core values and beliefs, we would have no problem. But many do not, and want instead to spread sharia law and Islamist totalitarianism wherever they go.

france-marseillesThe nation of France knows this all too well. With around 10 per cent of the population Muslim, there are almost daily horror stories coming out of this land. What is happening there should serve as a warning and a wakeup call to the rest of the West.

Mark Driscoll: a timeline of his downfall

by Christine Pack

What follows is a brief timeline of Mars Hill history. This timeline is by no means comprehensive, but merely gives a brief overview of some of what has taken place in Mars Hill under Mark Driscoll. In my opinion, three of the events below were pivotal moments that, taken together, caused Christians outside of Mars Hill to sit up and start asking questions about Driscoll.

GTY Blog: Should Christians Celebrate Christmas?

Undoubtedly a lot of planning has gone into your Christmas celebration this year. Between decorating the house, organizing meals and visits with relatives, preparing for and attending office, church, and family parties, and all the time spent shopping, wrapping, and sending gifts, you can see why Christmas is a multi-month event for many people.

But let’s take a step back from the hectic schedule and ask an important, fundamental question: Should Christians celebrate Christmas?

For many believers, that’s an audacious thought—Of course Christians ought to celebrate Christ’s birth!

But when you consider the rampant commercialism, greed, and self-indulgence that has overtaken the season, combined with the suspect pagan origins of the holiday and its various trappings, you can understand why more and more Christians are skipping Christmas.

So what is a conscientious believer to do? Can our Christmas celebration be a light to a lost world, or is abstaining altogether the best way to adorn the gospel? John MacArthur was recently in studio, and we posed the question to him. You can see his answer in the video below.

“Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Wait.  What?

Christmas Apocalypse?

Oh goodness.  Of all the idiotic ways to try to make Christmas “relevant” …

I know what you’re thinking: “Unger has lost it, and his meds have final fried his frontal lobe.”

Well, I don’t think that’s quite the scenario, but now that I have your attention let’s look at Luke 2:22-35!

Who enters into the Lord’s rest?

Possessing the Treasure

by Mike Ratliff

7 For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand. Today, if you would hear His voice, 8 Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, As in the day of Massah in the wilderness, 9 “When your fathers tested Me, They tried Me, though they had seen My work. 10 “For forty years I loathed that generation, And said they are a people who err in their heart, And they do not know My ways. 11 “Therefore I swore in My anger, Truly they shall not enter into My rest. (Psalms 95:7-11 NASB)

Those who insist that we are in a ‘post-evangelical era’ and must, therefore, radically alter not only how we do church in order to reach unbelieving people in our time, also insist that this must be accompanied by a toning down of one’s Christian convictions about the truth. We are told that the culture…
