How Many People Will Have To Migrate Out Of California When All The Water Disappears? The drought in California is getting a lot worse. As you read this, snowpack levels in the Sierra Nevada mountains are the lowest that have ever been recorded. That means that there won’t be much water for California farmers and California cities once again this year. To make up the difference in recent years, water has been pumped out of the ground like crazy. In fact, California has been losing more than 12 million acre-feet of groundwater a year since 2011, and wells all over the state are going dry. Once the groundwater is all gone, what are people going to do? 100 years ago, the population of the state of California was 3 million, and during the 20th century we built lots of beautiful new cities in an area that was previously a desert. Scientists tell us that the 20th century was the wettest century in 1000 years for that area of the country, but now weather patterns are reverting back to normal. Today, the state of California is turning back into a desert but it now has a population of 38 million people. This is not sustainable in the long-term. So when the water runs out, where are they going to go? FULL REPORT

Imported drug-resistant stomach bug spreading in US

Posted: 02 Apr 2015 07:51 PM PDT

Imported drug-resistant stomach bug spreading in USA drug-resistant strain of a nasty stomach bug made its way into the U.S. and spread, causing more than 200 illnesses since last May, health officials said Thursday. Many cases were traced to people who had recently traveled to the Dominican Republic, India or other countries. Outbreaks of the shigella (shih-GEHL’-uh) bacteria are not unusual, but this strain is resistant to the antibiotic most commonly prescribed for adults. “This is the first time we’ve documented this large an outbreak of antibiotic-resistant (shigella) linked to international travel,” said Dr. Anna Bowen of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Since last May, the imported superbug has sickened at least 243 people, with large recent outbreaks in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and California. FULL REPORT

Tehran Accuses White House Of Lying About Nuke Deal

Tehran Accuses White House Of Lying About Nuke DealJust hours after the announcement of what the United States characterized as a historic agreement with Iran over its nuclear program, the country’s leading negotiator lashed out at the Obama administration for lying about the details of a tentative framework. Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif accused the Obama administration of misleading the American people and Congress in a fact sheet it released following the culmination of negotiations with the Islamic Republic. Zarif bragged in an earlier press conference with reporters that the United States had tentatively agreed to let it continue the enrichment of uranium, the key component in a nuclear bomb, as well as key nuclear research. Zarif additionally said Iran would have all nuclear-related sanctions lifted once a final deal is signed and that the country would not be forced to shut down any of its currently operating nuclear installations. Homeland Security renews quest for national license plate tracking system

Posted: 02 Apr 2015 07:33 PM PDT

Homeland Security renews quest for national license plate tracking systemThe Department of Homeland Security is seeking bids from companies able to provide law enforcement officials with access to a national license-plate tracking system — a year after canceling a similar solicitation over privacy issues. The reversal comes after officials said they had determined they could address concerns raised by civil liberties advocates and lawmakers about the prospect of the department’s gaining widespread access, without warrants, to a system that holds billions of records that reveal drivers’ whereabouts. In a privacy impact assessment issued Thursday, the DHS says that it is not seeking to build a national database or contribute data to an existing system. Instead, it is seeking bids from companies that already gather the data to say how much they would charge to grant access to law enforcement officers at Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a DHS agency. Officials said they also want to impose limits on ICE personnel’s access to and use of the data. FULL REPORT

Termite ‘superswarm’ threatens South Florida

Termite ‘superswarm’ threatens South FloridaTwo of the world’s most destructive termite species are swarming South Florida, and the fact that they are mating has scientists sweating. The Asian and Formosan subterranean termite species are producing hundreds of thousands of winged males and females (known as alates), which are in turn creating hybrid colonies, according to University of Florida entomologists. The two species are no joke, and hybrid colonies could prove even more disastrous for homeowners. “They are the two most destructive termite species in the world,” University of Florida Entomology Professor Nan-Yao Su told FoxNews.com. “The common name for Formosan subterranean termite in China and Japan is ‘house termite’ as it can literally bring down a house, usually [starting] with [the] roof as they chew through the supporting beams.” Termite colonies, sometimes consisting of millions of individuals, can live up to 20 years and thrive in South Florida, where the temperatures offer ideal mating conditions. PBS: ’10 Commandments’ For Atheist Parents Raising ‘Tolerant’ Kids

Posted: 02 Apr 2015 01:45 PM PDT

PBS: '10 Commandments' For Atheist Parents Raising 'Tolerant' KidsPublic Broadcast Service published a piece by Wendy Thomas Russell, author of Relax, It’s Just God: How and Why to Talk to Your Kids About Religion When You’re Not Religious, who shared her own 10 Commandments to guide atheist parents in having the “God Talk” with their children. Starting with an uncited statistic, Russel states that between 2012 and 2014, 7.5 million Americans “lost their religious faith.” Because “secularism is on the rise,” Russel asks, “[H]ow do we, as first-generation secular parents, go about talking to our kids about God and religion? What do we tell them? When? And how?” So she came up with ten steps to teach parents that are “atheist, agnostic, humanist, deist, or nothing at all” how “to raise kind, happy, tolerant kids capable of making up their own minds about what to believe.” Below is a summary of her “commandments:” MORE

Crystal Cathedral’s and ‘Hour of Power’s’ Robert Schuller Passes Away

Posted: 02 Apr 2015 01:30 PM PDT

Crystal Cathedral's and 'Hour of Power's' Robert Schuller Passes AwayRobert Schuller, 88, has died, according to the Associated Press. The Crystal Cathedral founder and Hour of Power host was in critical condition yesterday, and his daughter-in-law said he’d already made funeral arrangements. “He gave it to my husband 10 years ago,” Donna Schuller told the OC Register. “Perfectionist that he is, I’m sure he has planned out and specified every little detail.” Schuller was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, and has been ailing since then. Schuller is perhaps best known for founding the Crystal Cathedral, which produced the Hour of Power TV show. The ministry, founded by Schuller’s grandfather, began as Garden Grove Community Church at the Orange Drive-in Theatre in 1955, soon adding a 300-seat chapel four miles away. It later expanded to the larger campus. As the ministry grew, in 1970 the Hour of Power television program launched and aired in all 50 states by 1975. The program eventually became the most-watched religious program in the world, reaching 17 million viewers. The Crystal Cathedral was completed in 1980. Charisma

Iran ‘deal’ would lift sanctions, shrink nuclear program

Posted: 02 Apr 2015 01:21 PM PDT

Iran 'deal' would lift sanctions, shrink nuclear programThe U.S. and international negotiators announced the hard-fought framework for an Iranian nuclear deal Thursday, capping days of exhaustive and tense talks that blew past their original deadline.  The plan, containing dozens of provisions, would effectively require Iran to wind down or sideline key parts of its nuclear program that could be used for nuclear weapon development in exchange for sweeping sanctions relief. The preliminary agreement allows all sides — the U.S., Iran and five other world powers — to continue working toward a final deal by a June 30 deadline.  Speaking in the Rose Garden shortly after negotiators unveiled the plan in Switzerland, President Obama called the agreement a “historic understanding.”  “It is a good deal,” Obama said.  The announcement follows days of talks that went into overtime after missing a March 31 deadline, raising doubts on whether the negotiators could reach any agreement at all. Even with the framework, negotiators have weeks of talks ahead of them. And Obama will swiftly face pressure from congressional skeptics concerned about the direction of talks and seeking a vote on Capitol Hill.  FULL REPORT

Indiana doing ‘180,’ now leaving religious defenseless?

Posted: 02 Apr 2015 01:12 PM PDT

Indiana doing '180,' now leaving religious defenseless? Indiana lawmakers, under attack from the “gay” lobby and executives of major corporations for their adoption of a religious freedom law, apparently are planning a reversal that would leave religious believers defenseless when confronted by demands from homosexuals.  Indiana has been a target of criticism this week after adopting a Religious Freedom Restoration Act similar to laws in 19 other states as well as a federal law of the same name. The law allows courts to consider the First Amendment religious rights of those who are sued by homosexuals with “discrimination” complaints. However, backed into a corner by a media narrative contending the law uniquely allows discrimination, Indiana Republican Gov. Mike Pence promised to “fix” it. A sampling of the fury over the law: A talk show host described the homosexual community as “totalitarian” on the issue, a pizzeria owned by a Christian family was forced to close after a TV station ferreted out its beliefs about marriage and several companies said they wouldn’t do business in Indiana. The federal religious-freedom law, however, was introduced by Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy, signed by Democratic President Bill Clinton and endorsed by the New York Times. The original Indiana law was a fair attempt to balance interests, wrote Daniel O. Conkle, a professor at Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law, in the Indianapolis Star. FULL REPORT

Restoring All Things? Another Misguided Attempt

These authors join a host of other “restoration movement” authors and speakers who have become prominent in the last decade. Giving the benefit of the doubt, I am sure that the leaders of the movement are not motivated by a book-selling, speech-giving, royalties-driven heart. Rather, they are leading out of an honest-to-goodness desire for a better world.

But their desire is totally misguided.

The evil Easter Bunny is going to sacrifice your kids to a pagan goddess, so let’s show the world that we’re not happy that Jesus rose from the dead

by Marsha West

This article will no doubt spark a bit of controversy. In it, Stephen John addresses the claims that Easter is pagan in origin. therefore Christians should not celebrate Easter Sunday:

This piece is not about how evil and pagan the Easter bunny and Easter are,” John clarifies. “Or that Easter eggs, especially the red-painted ones, constitute full-blown devil worship and offerings to strange goddesses. Boo! And it’s not about whether or not born-again believers should or should not celebrate Easter—that is your decision. This piece was written from a born-again believer’s perspective and looks at some other Easter-related issues. But please note that you’re not going to get your obsessive, fanatical, and unbiblical anti-Easter fix here. For that, try the Hebrew Roots Movement cult, the Sacred Name Movement cult, your local branch of the Anti-Easter League, the We-Are-All-Jews-Now fan club, or, sadly (in many cases), your local church. Ready to start your new life with God?

Who do you think that I am?

With that brief question Jesus Christ confronted His followers with the most important issue they would ever face. He had spent much time with them and made some bold claims about His identity and authority. Now the time had come for them either to believe or deny His teachings.

Who do you say Jesus is? Your response to Him will determine not only your values and lifestyle, but your eternal destiny as well.

Gay Totalitarianism and the Coming Persecution of Christians

For centuries, the early Christians endured far worse than we might face, dying in the Coliseum to the taunts of jeering crowds — whose grandchildren would flee the moral chaos of collapsing Rome and flock to the underground churches. All the persecution that a government like China can deal its native Christians has not stopped the church from exploding there, and striking fear at the highest levels of a totalitarian government. The battered church in Poland led the movement that brought down the Iron Curtain, through sober, persistent resistance.

A Protestant’s Passion For The Virtues Of Thomas

Robert George has pointed out that no fault divorce was the real watershed in the recent legal history of the institution. That changed marriage from a relationship of lifelong commitment to that of a temporary, dispensable, sentimental bond. Yet if we look at this through the lens of Thomas’s distinctions, we can see that no fault divorce presupposes a prior definition of love as primarily passion, not virtue. Thus, it is arguably not the redefinition of marriage but the redefinition of love which is the real problem underlying society’s current moral malaise.

Washington State Florist Fined, Ordered To Create Gay Wedding Arrangements

In a letter dated Feb. 20, Stutzman declined the attorney general’s offer, stating it revealed he didn’t understand the true meaning behind the two-year-old battle. “It’s about freedom, not money,” she wrote. “Washington’s constitution guarantees us ‘freedom of conscience in all matters of religious sentiment.’ I cannot sell that precious freedom. You are asking me to walk in the way of a well-known betrayer, one who sold something of infinite worth for 30 pieces of silver. That is something I will not do.”

Hating “Little” Sins

A holy man knows that the indulging of the least sin is sufficient for any man to question his integrity and ingenuity towards God. He that will transgress for a morsel of bread will be ready enough to sell his soul for a grain (Prov 28.21). He that will pervert justice for a few pieces of silver, what will he not do for a hatful of gold? He that dares to lie to save a little of his estate, what will not he do to save his life?

New York City To Change Rules To Allow Churches To Rent Schools

Monday’s decision, issued without comment, was the third time that the high court rejected an appeal by the Bronx Household of Faith, which for years held Sunday services at a local public school. The church last year finished work on its own building near P.S. 15, but said it still needs extra space for events that include religious services.

The city’s Board of Education said it wanted to maintain a policy against allowing houses of worship from renting space in city-owned buildings to prevent a blurring of church-state lines.

Jesus Loves Me This I Know, For The Bible Tells Me So

How do we know this? The only way that we can know these amazing truths for certain is explained in the little song. “Jesus loves me this I know; for the Bible tells me so.” We can be sure of Jesus’ love because God has revealed this truth to us in his Word, the Bible. Only in the holy Scriptures of the Bible, do we learn of our need for forgiveness and God’s provision through Jesus Christ, his only son.

Two Books on the “New Apostolic Reformation”

Central to the NAR is the notion that churches and Christians must submit to the authority of modern day apostles and prophets if they are to be included in God’s plans for the expansion of His kingdom. These apostles, self-described as generals, and prophets, said to convey new truth to the church, claim to have full authority comparable to those holding these offices during biblical times – and more. Indeed, their offices constitute governing authority that demands submission. That fact, together with the spiritual gifts and insights that they are said to have the ability to convey, creates an authoritarian environment that appears cult like in nature.

Christians, You Are Not Jews

The purpose here is to call Presbyterians, confessional ones particularly, to stop with the adoption of extra-biblical holy days, but especially with the re-appropriation of Old Covenant types and shadows, regardless of whatever “good” motive may lie behind it. Be confident in the Biblical forms of Worship. Be certain that God Almighty in His perfect wisdom has given you all that you need to not only thrive, but survive in this fallen world; resting always in the mighty grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Your Best Life Now – Not

by Bill Muehlenberg

All over the wold Christians are being persecuted for their faith. They are being imprisoned. They are being tortured. They are being killed. They are being horrifically assaulted, persecuted, attacked and targeted by various anti-Christian groups, chief of which is Islam.

Consider just one example which we are just now getting all the details on: around 150 people – mostly Christians – have been massacred in yet another Islamic terror attack. At least one online headline and opening sentence spelled out the exact truth about this: “Christians targeted in uni massacre – Islamic terrorists have murdered at least 147 people – mostly Christians – in a pre-dawn attack on a Kenyan university after blasting in the gates with grenades.”

Many other reports are refusing to mention how Islam is involved, or how the targets were specifically Christians.

The MSM’s Ongoing Hatred of Christianity

by Bill Muehlenberg

We know that the mainstream media is comprised largely of secular humanists and lefties who more often than not hate Christianity with a passion. And it shows – big time. The relentless attacks on Christianity, Christians and Christian values are encountered day in and day out.

We had another perfect example of this just the other day. It was an appallingly bad article by some columnist for the Fairfax Press which was yet another hatchet job on Jesus Christ. Because it was so ludicrously idiotic and lacking in any substance whatsoever, I at first thought I would ignore it altogether.

3 Things to Do When You Can’t Get Along

by Lindsey Wagstaffe | 4/02/15

What can you do when you’re dealing with a Christian who consistently rubs you the wrong way? Maybe you work together, live together, study together, or share a group of friends. Due to circumstances largely outside your control, you’re stuck together . . . and you’re going crazy.

You can’t change someone else’s heart or actions, but you may ease the strain of a tense relationship by cultivating compassion.

While we aren’t required to be close friends with all believers, God does ask us to do whatever we can to live “peaceably” with each other (Rom. 12:18). You can’t change someone else’s heart or actions, but it may be possible to ease the strain of a tense relationship on your end by cultivating these three habits of compassion.

These aren’t bulletproof guarantees that your relationship will improve, but they are guards against bitterness in your own heart. Practicing these three things will change your own perspective, drawing you closer to your heavenly Father. They will help you defuse conflict with grace by refusing to return evil for evil. At the very least, the person you’re experiencing conflict with will see the love of Christ in you. And what is more powerful than His love?

Jesus Didn’t Die from Crucifixion (The Swoon Theory)(Alternate Resurrection Theory #2)

Jesus Didn’t Die from Crucifixion

It’s difficult to deal with alternate theories on the historicity of Christ’s resurrection. There are plenty of them out there. That’s not the hard part. It’s just hard to choose the ones that pose the most legitimate challenge.

Further Reading: Was Jesus’ Body Stolen (Alternate Resurrection Theory #1)

If your alternative theory isn’t going to win on its own merits you must trash the original.
Click To Tweet

Before developing an alternative view of Christ’s death and resurrection the standard view must be rejected. After all, why go searching for an alternative to a perfectly good explanation? One must reject the possibility of God raising a person from the dead before proposing a different theory. Why? Because none of the alternatives have better historical or rational support. So if your alternative theory isn’t going to win on its own merits you must do away with the original story out-of-hand so there’s nothing to be compared to.

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ

The second alternative theory I want to talk about is the “Swoon Theory.” “Swoon” means to faint. This theory says that Christ never really died at all. The swoon theory was promoted by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln in their 1982 book Holy Blood, Holy Grail. Dan Brown famously used this book in connection with his best-seller The Da Vinci Code. This theory is popular among Muslims who traditionally reject Christ’s death on the cross. The swoon theory was first proposed by H. E. G. Paulus in The Life of Jesus (1828).

Explanation of the Swoon Theory

Here’s the swoon theory in a nutshell:

Sunday’s Coming: The Resurrection and Unbelievers

Sundays ComingOver the last three days, as we look forward to Resurrection Sunday, we have been considering the biblical and theological implications of the resurrection of Christ. On Tuesday, we examined the significance of the resurrection as it relates to the person of Christ. On Wednesday and Thursday, we took a look at eight implications the resurrection of Christ has for believers in Him. Because of the resurrection, the believer enjoys the blessing of regeneration and deliverance from the fear and slavery of death; the resurrection is the foundation of justifying grace, the guarantee of the indwelling Holy Spirit and the present intercessory ministry of Christ, the ground of our sanctification, power for holiness and for ministry, and the guarantee of the promise of a resurrection body of our own, free from sin and decay.

But this morning I want to ask: what does the bodily resurrection of Christ say to the unbeliever? What is the significance of the resurrection for those of you who remain outside of Christ? Whether you’re an atheist or agnostic; Buddhist, Hindu, or any other religion; or even if you call yourself a Christian but have a mere outward attachment to Christ—you would regularly attend church, and even read the Bible and listen to sermons—but you have no vital union to Christ, no living relationship, and you still cling to your sin and aim to be lord of your life. What is the significance of the resurrection for you?

Church Membership Renewal, A New Trend – Rainer on Leadership #112

Podcast Episode #112

SUBSCRIBE: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio

Recently on the blog, I wrote about the emerging trend of annual renewal of church membership. While most churches are not ready for such a change, many are moving forward with this trend and have seen—in many cases—positive results. The churches who execute this process well often see growth in giving, attendance, ministry, and missions. So today on the podcast, we look at this trend and explain why it’s working for so many churches. Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • Church membership renewal goes contrary to where most churches are headed.
  • Most churches do not change well.
  • Incremental change is necessary to lead big changes in the church.
  • Younger churches accept change easier than established churches because the historical barriers just don’t exist.
  • It takes most pastors at least five years to build enough trust in a church in order to make significant changes.
  • Accountability is key, more than anything else, on the issue of follow-up.

The 10 aspects of annual church membership renewal we covered were:

  1. The early signs are that this practice can be a healthy move for a church.
  2. Proceed with great caution. Most churches are not ready for annual membership renewal.
  3. Incrementalism is necessary in most churches.
  4. Membership classes are key.
  5. Do not proceed with this process until you have seen it in other churches.
  6. Communication is vital.
  7. Younger churches tend to handle this change better than older churches.
  8. Longer-tenured pastors are typically more able to lead this change.
  9. Expect opposition. Annual membership presents significant change in most churches.
  10. Follow-up is crucial.

Don’t invite them to church this weekend

church-weekendFor a lot of churches in the West, Easter weekend is treated not unlike SuperBowl Sunday. It’s the big show, a grand production. Kind of like a regular Sunday with a bit of extra “oomph”—which most often comes in the form of horrifically graphic video clips from a movie for which we may or may not have appropriate licensing, though occasionally it also involves laser light shows, motorcycle stunts, and an extravagant giveaway or two. This is the weekend where we’re encouraged to invite our friends, our families, our neighbors, and bring them to church. It’s the weekend where they’re for sure going to hear the gospel preached and perhaps even the Lord might save them! But you know something? I’m not sure it’s always a good idea. In fact, in some cases, maybe the best thing to do is to not invite them at all.Read more

Indiana Meets the Big Gay Borg – “‘Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.’ That was the message of the Borg to Captain Jon-Luc Picard of the Starship Enterprise on the television series Star Trek: Next Generation. The Borg was a conglomerate of species forcibly transformed into cybernetic drones controlled by a hive mind called the Collective. The Borg grew ever stronger by appropriating and exploiting the assets of whatever new species it encountered as it roamed the universe in pursuit of its insatiable lust for power over the lives of others. Both individual and corporate victims of the Borg were assimilated into the Collective, losing their identity to the hive mind.”

The World Likes “Jesus” – “Why does the world hate Jesus? Note, Jesus does use the strong word, ‘Hate.’ The world itself might not use that word. They might call Jesus ‘Good Teacher’ (Mark 10:17), or flatter Him for His uncompromising stands (Matthew 22:16). But Jesus — perhaps doing the very thing for which the world hates Him — lays open their heart. Underneath all the unctuous language, the poses and the self-delusion, He finds not love nor admiration, but hatred.”

Everything Changes: Religious “Freedom,” Pizza and the Future of America – “Today we will spend the entire hour discussing the new Indiana Law protecting religious freedoms. It is a pivotal moment in our nation. The homosexual lobby, which touts tolerance, is being exposed anything but. But the majority of the public – and the mainstream media – hasn’t noticed. Instead, they are calling anyone who agrees with the new legislation ‘Bigots’ and worse.”

Worst Easter Advertisement EVER – “And the Worst Easter Advertisement in the History of the Christian Church Award goes to….Action Church.  Click to see the picture.”

Manhattan Declaration Director Attacks Christians in the Name of Christian Unity – “Mike Gendron happens to be a good, godly man, a first-class apologist and evangelist to Roman Catholics. He’s also a broadcast partner at Worldview Weekend, where the Pulpit & Pen Program is also posted. Gendron, Brannon Howse and others – including John Macarthur – have spoken out about the ecumenist language used in the Manhattan Declaration. Many have signed the document and reconsidered after hearing their concerns. And their concerns, quite frankly, are legitimate.”

2 Peter 2:4 states “For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved until judgment”.

If this refers to those same fallen angels,  how can they be doing it now, today, if they are chained in hell?

Jesus our Pilot

The Reformed Reader Blog

Product Details Based on the stories of Jesus calming the wind and the waves (e.g. Luke 8:22-25), Christian teachers throughout history have referred to Jesus as the pilot, or helmsman, of the church (or the Christian’s life).  Below is a short list of examples from several periods in history – examples I find quite edifying and encouraging.

Hippolytus (3rd C.): The Church is like a ship tossed in the deep, but not destroyed, for she has with her the skilled Pilot, Christ.

Athanasius (4th C): Our Lord Christ, like an excellent Pilot, steers and preserves and orders all things by his Wisdom and Word.

John Calvin (16th C): Our course in the world is like a dangerous sailing between many rocks, and exposed to many storms and tempests, and so no one arrives at the port except he who has escaped a thousand deaths. It is certain that we are…

Zwinglius Redivivus

Answer: Yes there is; for thereby I am assured, that he took on him the curse which lay upon me; (a) for the death of the cross was accursed of God. (b)

(a) Gal.3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: (b) Deut.21:23 His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

GTY Blog: The Seven Last Sayings of Christ: A Prayer of Consumation

Code: B150403

by John MacArthur

Perhaps the most compelling words Christ ever spoke were some of His last. In a loud, triumphant voice that defied the asphyxiating effects of hanging on the cross, Christ cried out, “It is finished!” That simple exclamation signaled the end of His life, but the beginning of new life for everyone who would trust in Him for salvation. “It is finished!” was, in essence, the beginning of much more.

Christ’s final statement from the cross was similarly significant. It was a simple prayer that expressed the unqualified submission that had been in His heart from the very beginning. Luke records those final words: “And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, ‘Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ Having said this, He breathed His last” (Luke 23:46).

Christ died as no other man has ever died. In one sense He was murdered by the hands of wicked men (Acts 2:23). In another sense it was the Father who sent Him to the cross and bruised Him there, putting Him to grief—and it pleased the Father to do so (Isaiah 53:10). Yet in still another sense, no one took Christ’s life. He gave it up willingly for those whom He loved (John 10:17–18).

When He finally breathed His last on the cross, it was not with a wrenching struggle against His killers. He did not display any frenzied death throes. His final passage into death—like every other aspect of the crucifixion drama—was a deliberate act of His own sovereign will, showing that to the very end, He was sovereignly in control of all that was happening. John says, “He bowed His head and gave up His spirit” (John 19:30). Quietly, submissively, He simply yielded up His life.

Everything had come to pass exactly as He said it would. Not only Jesus, but also His killers, and the mocking crowd, together with Pilate, Herod, and the Sanhedrin—all had perfectly fulfilled the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God to the letter.

And thus Christ calmly and majestically displayed His sovereignty to the end. It seemed to all who loved Him—and even many who cared little for Him—like a supreme tragedy. But it was the greatest moment of victory in the history of redemption, and Christ would make that fact gloriously clear when He burst triumphantly from the grave just days later.

Modesty

The Reformed Reader Blog

In the first century, Paul said that Christian women “are to dress themselves in modest clothing, with decency and good sense” (1 Tim. 2:9 HCSB).  Speaking more broadly of sexual purity, all Christians should dress decently and not in a sexually immoral or suggestive way.  Kent Hughes talks about modesty in chapter seven of Set Apart.  His discussion is a good one; I’ll summarize it below.

What Fuels Immodesty Today?

1) The fashion industry.  Early on, Calvin Klein led the way in promoting a drugged-out cocaine chic as pale, skinny adolescent men and women posed in jeans (some with flies unzipped) in various postures of strung-out languor.  Today Abercrombie & Fitch is the leader in marketing lewdness.

2) The body industry.  If anything trumps the fashion industry in promoting immodesty, it’s the body industry.  The body business lives on the promotion of the myth that you cannot…

40 Days to the Cross: Reflections from Great Thinkers (Week Six: Friday)

Friday

Day 39: How compelling is the evidence that Jesus’ tomb was found empty on Easter Sunday morning?

Confession: Psalm 86:1–5

Incline, O Yahweh, your ear and answer me,

because I am poor and needy.

Watch over my life because I am faithful.

You are my God; save your servant.

I am the one who trusts you.

Be gracious to me, O Lord,

because I call to you all day long.

Make glad the soul of your servant,

because I desire you, O Lord.

For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,

and abundant in loyal love for all who call to you.

Reading: Mark 15:42–47

And when it was already evening, since it was the day of preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath), Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the council who was also himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came acting courageously and went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. And Pilate was surprised that he was already dead, and summoning the centurion, asked him whether he had died already. And when he learned of it from the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph. And after purchasing a linen cloth and taking him down, he wrapped him in the linen cloth and placed him in a tomb that had been cut from the rock. And he rolled a stone over the entrance of the tomb. Now Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was placed.

Reflection

Consider that gratitude and thankfulness is the best service—being the end of all other worship—and is God’s due. It is the end why God gives matter and means by which, and for which, we should be thankful. Nothing is more beneficial than thankfulness, nor anything more mischievous than unthankfulness. Consider also that hearty and constant thankfulness is a testimony of uprightness; it excellently becomes the upright to be thankful. It is all the homage, and all the service which God requires at your hands, for all the good that He bestows on you. It is pleasant and delightful. Thankfulness elevates and enlarges the soul, making it fruitful in good works beyond any other duty. For the thankful man is often consulting with himself what he shall render to the Lord for all His benefits to him. This spiritual praise and thanks to God by Christ is the beginning of heaven upon earth—being part of that communion and fellowship which saints and angels have with God above. It is that everlasting service, which endures forever.
