This requires a bit of explanation.

TOP RIGHT HOOKS

Greece Gets Another Handout With a Bailout

For the third time since 2010, Greece may be spared the full-blown consequences of an economic tailspin of its own making, at least for now. Over the weekend, negotiators reached a tentative bailout agreement that, if implemented, would infuse upward of $96 billion (€86 billion) into the country’s floundering economy. Greece would retain its membership with the Eurozone in return for additional, albeit stricter, austerity measures. However, the deal hinges on the approval of Athens’ Parliament, and a history of broken promises have fostered a pessimistic outlook. Entitled and disgruntled Greek citizens recently voted against a referendum, the terms of which, ironically, are an integral part of the new bailout. As The Wall Street Journal reports, “Athens’s Parliament has to pass pension overhauls and sales tax increases that voters overwhelmingly rejected in a referendum just one week ago.” Will that stop lawmakers, who face voters’ contempt, from approving the bailout? “Before the country can get better, it will have to get a lot worse,” notes Investor’s Business Daily. Greece’s GDP has dropped roughly 33% since 2009, yet time and again Greeks have demonstrated how reluctant they are to abandon socialist enslavement. “To grow again, Greece will need to make deeper spending cuts, reduce public pensions, introduce free-market reforms, lighten regulations and tackle endemic political corruption,” IBD adds. That will be a tough sell, but it’s the only way forward.

There’s No ‘Loophole’ in the Background Check System

The New York Times breathlessly reports that Dylan Roof could have been stopped from murdering nine people in Charleston were it not for a flaw in the background check. “A loophole in the check system allowed [Roof] to buy the .45-caliber handgun despite his having previously admitted to drug possession,” the Times reports the FBI to have admitted. (The Times story has since been corrected without notation.) The FBI operates the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, though, listening to Democrats, we know it may be shocking to learn that a nearly universal background check system already exists. What may be even more shocking to the Times is that it wasn’t a “loophole.” It was human error, plain and simple. Someone at the FBI failed to update the system.

The Washington Post, meanwhile, laments, “The disclosure amounts to a heartbreaking admission by the FBI director that the attack on members of a Bible study group at Emanuel AME might have been averted.” Perhaps, but perhaps not. Roof was an alleged druggie who killed nine people. Does anyone think there aren’t other ways of obtaining firearms than passing a background check? Clearly, the lesson here is twofold: First, enforce the law. Second, there are still times the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct Against the Redskins

The Washington Redskins lost more yardage in their drive to protect their name from perpetually aggrieved leftist busybodies. On Wednesday, a judge canceled the NFL franchise’s federal trademark registrations. U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee’s ruling upheld a previous decision by the federal Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. But the clock hasn’t run out yet, and Redskins President Bruce Allen promised an appeal. “We are convinced that we will win on appeal as the facts and the law are on the side of our franchise that has proudly used the name Washington Redskins for more than 80 years,” Allen said in a statement. But Lee’s ruling presented an opportunity for the Redskins’ hometown paper, The Washington Post, to give a full hands-on-hips editorial lecture to the team. “The name is going to have to change,” the paper finger-wagged, “and the sooner team owner Dan Snyder puts himself on the right side of history, the better it will be for everyone.” That “right side of history” blather is what leftists always use when they have no other argument for their policy preference. But the Post also issued what we view as a veiled threat: “No matter what a court eventually determines about the ability of the team to peddle its gear, the damage caused by using a hurtful name will continue.” Because they and their fellow race-baiting travelers will never shut up about it. It’s the same with the Confederate flag and those who oppose same-sex marriage — the beatings will continue until you submit.

FEATURED RIGHT ANALYSIS

If You’re White, Shame on You

By Arnold Ahlert

2015-07-13-6a518547_large.jpg
Bless his heart

The leftist-inspired deconstruction of traditional America — and by extension, the dominant white Judeo-Christian culture that formed the basis of it — continues apace. MTV has produced “White People,” a documentary in which five young white people are made to feel uncomfortable about their inherently “privileged” position in society. This claptrap is narrated by Jose Antonio Vargas, an openly gay Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist whose coming out as an illegal alien in a 2011 New York Times column has earned him celebrity status — and apparently, legal immunity.

As the trailer indicates, the documentary aims to “change the way you think about white history” and urges its audience to “all get uncomfortable together” when dealing with racial issues. In a Facebook post accompanied by the picture of the same young white man apparently reduced to tears in the trailer, Vargas spells out his objective: “We cannot have an honest conversation about race in America until we explore and unpack what ‘whiteness’ and ‘white privilege’ mean in America.”

MTV President Stephen Friedman doubles down on this invidious nonsense in a press release. “Whiteness often remains unexamined in conversations about race in this country, even as it acts as the implicit norm against which other racial identities are judged,” he insists. “By shining a spotlight on whiteness, we hope ‘White People’ will serve as a powerful conversation starter that encourages our audience to address racial bias through honest, judgment-free dialogue.”

That would be honest, judgment-free dialogue as long as one concedes white privilege is the baseline from which any conversation about race can proceed. Thus it is completely unsurprising that one of the documentary’s cast members, 21-year-old “Lucas,” is channeling his inner useful idiot, and became, as the press release puts it, “passionate about the topic of race and began teaching white privilege workshops.”

If enough guilty white people visit the film’s website, such workshops may no longer be necessary. It is there they can access the seven-day “bias cleanse” provided by the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. It promises to “provide you with the daily tasks that will help you begin to de-bias yourself.”

Thankfully, following the trailer’s posting on YouTube, “White People” received the barrage of negative comments it so richly deserves. “I’m Asian, and I am offended for white people by this show,” said one person. Another got to the meat of the issue. “What it means to be white? Well for starters that I am somehow a terrible racist by default, simply because I am white. That I should feel bad/guilty/apologetic about issues that happened over 100 years ago to people that I have nothing to do with. That somehow everything is magically in my favor, which it is not. Yep. That’s how it feels.”

What happened — exactly — over 100 years ago? America became one of the first nations on earth to eliminate slavery.

“Today the moral horror of slavery is so widely condemned that it is hard to realize that there were thousands of years when slavery was practiced around the world by people of virtually every race,” black economist extraordinaire Thomas Sowell explains. “Even the leading moral and religious thinkers in different societies accepted slavery as just a fact of life. No one wanted to be a slave. But their rejection of slavery as a fate for themselves in no way meant that they were unwilling to enslave others. It was just not an issue — until the 18th century, and then it became an issue only in Western civilization.”

It is precisely this part of American history the white privilege hucksters choose to ignore, because the redemptive part of America’s historical legacy is inimical to the America-damning agenda promulgated by the Left. It is an agenda that can only thrive in the atmosphere of ginned up racial divisiveness that has become the Left’s calling card.

But not just divisiveness. We are in the midst of “the therapeutic culture’s hostile takeover of the culture,” explains The American Spectator’s Daniel Flynn. “We go for the gut or tug at the heart. Stimulating the mental circuitry strikes as a non sequitur to a generation trained to emote rather than think. The Thought Police put themselves out of business and created a more ominously Orwellian control apparatus: the Feelings Police.”

It is a “police force” comprised entirely of leftists currently dedicated to purging everything with which they disagree from the public square, especially a white Judeo-Christian culture that presents the largest impediment to the “fundamental transformation of the United States” these would-be totalitarians seek to attain.

Toward that end, anything resembling a competing idea becomes either a “microaggression” requiring a “trigger warning,” or something subjected to ad hominem attacks designed to make competing ideas utterly irrelevant, or subservient to name-calling. And when intellectual rigor is abandoned in favor of emotionalism, guilt, or lack thereof, becomes the only currency by which one’s commitment to “the cause” is measured.

And if one feels no such guilt? Shut up and go with the flow — or else.

Radio talk-show host Mark Levin insists, “[W]e’ve had a silent coup in this country.” Levin is wrong. There has been nothing remotely silent about the American Left’s insidious intention to destroy people and ideas with which they disagree. Whether it is the demonization of the Confederate flag, the removal of a Founding Father who appears on our currency, or the severe punishment of bakers who won’t bake the cake, the message is clear: The people who wish to preserve anything resembling American history, culture or tradition are irredeemable bigots who must be exiled to the fringes of “enlightened” society.

And when the Left’s own odious policies actually get someone killed, such as a lawless sanctuary city agenda that enabled a five-time deported illegal alien to snuff out the life of a 32-year-old woman? Defend the bankrupt notion that Rule of Law takes a back seat to accommodating the sensitivities of illegal aliens and their contemptible enablers. And why not? Recent Supreme Court decisions added a patina of legitimacy to “flexible” interpretations of the law, led by a chief justice who conflates advancing the leftist agenda with protecting the “integrity” of the Court.

As for genuine privilege, Vargas, and the 12 million illegal aliens, many of whom are demanding to be accommodated, go right to the top of list.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Jim DeMint & Mike Gonzalez: “For centuries, America welcomed succeeding surges of immigrants with an invitation to join a unique American culture that includes specific principles and virtues. Then, in the 1970s, our elites decided to reverse course, and started promoting sectarianism. We’ve never really had a debate on what is nothing less than a complete overhaul of the organizing principle of this most diverse of nations. The decisions that led us here were bureaucratic and incremental. Congress passed a law here, federal agencies issued a rule there, and the courts made decisions hither and yonder. Before we knew it, we had shifted from more than two centuries of perfecting the melting pot to a system of adversarial multiculturalism. Rather than welcoming legal immigrants as new members of our national family, today’s coercive diversity works differently: Immigrants are immediately categorized into bureaucratic, pan-ethnic ‘minority’ groups such as ‘Hispanic’ or ‘Asian,’ each with an ascribed set of supposed cultural norms to which they are expected to conform. Those who support such balkanization create a divisiveness that not only flouts our proud tradition of legal and ordered immigration — it puts the whole nation at risk.”

SHORT CUTS

The Gipper: “We need true tax reform… But we cannot have such reform while our tax policy is engineered by people who view the tax as a means of achieving changes in our social structure.”

Upright: “However I personally feel about Court decisions, on issues that affect the entire country, I don’t believe a 5-4 decision should settle anything. Criminal cases require 12 people to reach a unanimous decision. Even civil cases require a two-thirds vote. So how is it that a mere 55% of the Supremes are allowed to make final life-changing decisions affecting 100% of 320,000,000 of us?” —Burt Prelutsky

The BIG Lie: “I got involved in public life for civil rights. [Same-sex marriage] is the civil rights movement of our generation. This decision is as consequential as Brown vs. the Board.” —Joe Biden

Non Compos Mentis: “‘The Cosby Show’ lied to its white viewers about the nature of racism, white supremacy, and white privilege in the post-civil rights era United States. It told them of a world of black millionaires — people who were ‘just like them.’ … While unintentional, ‘The Cosby Show’ enabled some of the ugliest Reagan-era fantasies.” —Salon’s Chauncey DeVega

Superiority complex: “A lot of the traits that make the United States exceptional these days are undesirable, like higher violence and less social mobility. Many of these differences can be attributed largely to the South. … Minus the South, the rest of the U.S. probably would be more like Canada or Australia or Britain or New Zealand — more secular, more socially liberal, more moderate in the tone of its politics and somewhat more generous in social policy.” —Politico’s Michael Lind

Dezinformatsia: “[S]hould we … reoccupy the South with Union forces and restart Reconstruction? … [O]r … just let the South go their own way?” —radio talk-show host Thom Hartmann

Alpha Jackass: “[R]ich white people are f—ing insane.” —Hollywood director Joss Whedon (An interesting slam considering that Whedon is both rich and white. So rich, in fact, that he’s worth about $100 million.” —Newsbusters’ Andrew Miller)

And last… “Hillary Clinton told CNN Tuesday she was never subpoenaed to testify on Benghazi. One hour later, House Republicans produced the subpoena they sent her to testify about Benghazi. Democrats won the argument, saying it’s just like Republicans to make fun of a woman who suffered a head injury.” —Argus Hamilton

The Last Days Of ‘Normal Life’ In America

Sheeple - Public DomainIf you have got family and friends that you would like to visit before things start getting really crazy, you should do so within the next couple of months, because these are the last days of “normal life” in America.  The website where I have posted this article is called “End of the American Dream“, but perhaps I should have entitled it “The End of America” because that is essentially what we are heading for.  The debt-fueled prosperity that so many of us take for granted is about to come to a screeching halt, and we are about to enter the hardest times that any of us have ever known.  And I am not just talking about economics either.  Based on all of the intel and information that I have gathered, we are about to enter a “perfect storm” that is going to shake this country in just about every possible way that it can be shaken.  So I hope that you will truly savor this summer – days like this will not come around again any time soon. Germany Never Intended For Greece To Stay In The Euro

No Deal - Public DomainThere never was going to be any deal.  All along, Germany has been seeking to establish conditions that would never be met so that they could force Greece out of the eurozone.  But the Germans had to do this subtly so that they would end up looking “reasonable” and would not turn the rest of the eurozone against them.  So why does Germany want to get rid of Greece?  Well, to be honest, it is because the Germans are sick and tired of paying for Greek mistakes.  In Germany, there is an obsession with having a balanced budget.  They even have a term for it – “the black zero“.  So it absolutely infuriates the Germans that the Greeks can never seem to get their act together and that German citizens have to keep paying for it.  At this point, the amount of money that Germany has already poured into Greece breaks down to more than 700 euros per citizen, and now Greece is going to need a new bailout of somewhere between 82 billion and 86 billion euros over the next three years.  Needless to say, the Germans are fed up with pouring money down a financial black hole, and they know that if they keep bailing Greece out that it is only a matter of time before they will have to bail out Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, etc. (Read More….)

Netanyahu: No stopping deal if ‘death to America’ chants didn’t kill talks

Jewish Home leader Naftali Bennett says the nuclear deal with Iran will be remembered as a dark moment in world history.

“Friends, even in dramatic days for the State of Israel, the sun shines, the birds tweet and a global terror power is born,” he says. “It all looks the same, but nothing will be the same starting today. These are crucial days for Israel.”

Bennett says that the deal about to be signed will transfer half a trillion dollars to a new terror superpower. “They are going to sign an agreement with the world’s most dangerous country and they do it with a country that says quite openly it wants to destroy states and peoples,” he says.

“Sometimes, when we read the history books of the last hundred years, we cannot seem to understand how terrible processes took place, how the world failed to see what is about to happen. Today, we can understand. The Western world is going to commit international hara-kiri and we are trying, with our feeble powers, to stay its hand,” Bennett says.

How the Dominoes Will Fall After ISIS Takes Damascus

Posted: 13 Jul 2015 07:51 AM PDT

For more than four years, the Assad regime in Syria has resisted its people’s cry to be freed from dictatorship. During the last several weeks, the Assad regime has shown signs of vulnerability punctuated by a weakened relationship with Iran. Iranian advisers who had supported Assad for years are now consumed with supporting the Iraqi government in its war against ISIS and the Houthis in Yemen in their war against a Saudi-led coalition of Arab nations. Iran’s economy has been damaged severely after a decade of international sanctions and Iran cannot support the Syrian regime financially forever. Hezbollah, the best trained force fighting for the regime, has lost about a thousand of its best fighters in Syria, the very fighters desperately needed to fight ISIS and al-Qaeda in Lebanon.

For these reasons, Syrian government forces have suffered a series of defeats over the last weeks. The Assad regime now controls no more than 35 percent of the country, leaving the rest to ISIS, the Kurds and the other rebel groups like al-Nusra front. Allepo, Syria’s largest city is almost surrounded completely by the rebels. The Syrian Kurds have increased the territories they control in the north to include most of the border areas with Turkey. Assad is also the de facto mayor of Damascus and the coastal areas. If this trend continues, which is likely to happen, the Syrian regime will probably fall by the end of this year. The two competing forces to occupy Damascus are ISIS and al-Nusra front. FULL REPORT

Submerged volcano cluster found off Sydney

Posted: 13 Jul 2015 07:39 AM PDT

A submerged volcano cluster has been found 250 kilometres off the coast of Sydney. Australia’s new ocean-going research vessel Investigator discovered extinct volcanoes during routine mapping of the seafloor in the search for the nursery grounds of larval lobsters. ‘The voyage was enormously successful, not only did we discover a cluster of volcanoes on Sydney’s doorstep, we were amazed to find that an eddy off Sydney was a hotspot for lobster larvae at a time of the year when we were not expecting them,’ Chief scientist for the voyage Professor Iain Suthers.

The four extinct volcanoes in the cluster are calderas, which form after a volcano erupts and the land around them collapses, forming a crater. The largest is 1.5 km across the rim and it rises 700 metres from the sea floor. The cluster is likely to be 50 million years old. FULL REPORT

Goldman analyst and ex-CIA agent: ‘We are in an extraordinarily dangerous time right now’

The Russia-NATO confrontation is becoming one of the defining aspects of the global strategic landscape. And according to the head of Goldman Sachs’s Office of Global Security, the situation is going to remain tense — or even intensify. Robert Dannenberg, who is also a 24-year CIA veteran, believes that Russia is the top strategic threat from a US perspective.

“We are in an extraordinarily dangerous time right now because both Russia and NATO are starting to exercise substantial military activity in close proximity to each other in Eastern Europe and the Baltics,” Dannenberg said in an interview included in a July 9 Goldman Sachs analyst note. Churches across America pledge massive civil disobedience as Supreme Court forces them to recognize gay marriage

A Christian-themed movement that seeks to reaffirm traditional marriage – that between a man and a woman only – recently took off with a campaign ahead of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that recognized a right of gays and lesbians to form a legally protected marriage. According to an ad placed in The Washington Post[PDF] by an organization called Defend Marriage, the group has launched a pledge drive which recognizes only marriage as defined by the Christian faith.

The organizers of the pledge drive have pledged to disavow the high court’s decision to uphold lower court decisions conveying the right to marry on homosexual couples. “We ask you not to force us to choose between the State and the Laws of God,” says the group on its website. Citing Martin Luther King, Jr., to make their case As for the Post ad,[PDF] which is also an open letter to the Supreme Court Justices, the group makes a number of declarations: We the undersigned have joined together to present our unified message and plea to the Justices of the United States Supreme Court regarding the matter of marriage. Genetically modified, glow-in-the-dark lamb ‘accidentally’ winds up in French food supply

Posted: 12 Jul 2015 06:24 PM PDT

Is it just an unfortunate case of biotechnology gone wrong, or does the French government’s “accidental” release of a genetically-modified (GMO) ewe into France’s food supply signify something more sinister? This is one of the pertinent questions being asked following a recent announcement by the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) that one of its GMO test lambs somehow ended up being sold to a private party — which is against the law in France — and secretly placed into the food supply.

The GMO lamb in question had been under investigation as part of a research project looking at human transplants for heart disease. The transgenic ewe was never intended to leave the INRA laboratory, and it most assuredly was never meant to be consumed by humans. Nevertheless, the animal, which was birthed by its GMO mother, was somehow shipped from the facility on August 5, 2014, to a “partner abattoir,” and its carcass was then sold to another private individual on October 28 of the same year. Could America Fall Without a Fight?

Posted: 12 Jul 2015 06:12 PM PDT

Americans tend to think their country is invulnerable to devastating, catastrophic attack – despite Pearl Harbor, despite 9/11 and despite the recent mega-hack of the entire personnel database of the federal government. After all, we have a great military machine that can project force anywhere in the world when necessary. Our soldiers are fearless. They fight in the air, on land, in the sea and in darkness better than any others in the world.

We have sophisticated weapons and technology on our side. But what if the big attack on America is one in which our military can’t defend us at all? More and more, that seems not only like a possibility, but a probability. In fact, we’ve seen some dress rehearsals for this kind of war recently. What this means is that enemies are prepared, willing and able to exploit vulnerabilities of our civilian government infrastructure to avoid a direct head-on confrontation with our strength – our fighting forces. America’s day of reckoning just 60 days away?

Posted: 12 Jul 2015 05:52 PM PDT

Two months from now the biblical Shemitah year will have played out and only then will we know whether it has left any significant event in its wake. In the past, this seven-year cycle has brought collapsing stock markets, tumbling currencies and the shaking of nations and empires. This period of early autumn was the most crucial time on the biblical calendar for the ancient Israelites, with the end of the seven-year cycle described in Deuteronomy as the Shemitah or Sabbath year.

All farmland was to be left in a state of rest and the people were to focus on God and His will for their nation and their lives. This year on Sept. 13, the Shemitah reaches its peak on the last day on the Hebrew calendar, Elul 29, known as the “day of nullification.” All debt and credit were to be wiped away on this day as described by author Jonathan Cahn in his New York-Times bestseller, “The Mystery of the Shemitah,” published in September 2014. But the Shemitah can be a game-changer not only for economies and stock markets but also in geopolitics. Religious Groups Remain Concerned After Obama Admin Releases New Abortion Pill Mandate Rules

Posted: 12 Jul 2015 03:28 PM PDT

Religious groups across the country remain concerned after the Obama administration released its new rules surrounding what has been dubbed the Obamacare abortion pill mandate. According to the revised regulations, women would still be able to obtain contraceptives at no cost to them. But for-profit companies and other similar organizations that object to personally providing coverage must contact either their insurance company or the federal government and advise of their religious objections. If contacting the government, officials will then contact the business’ insurance company and the insurance company will cover the contraceptives at no cost.

“Women across the country should have access to preventive services, including contraception,” HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell said in a statement. “At the same time, we recognize the deeply held views on these issues, and we are committed to securing women’s access to important preventive services at no additional cost under the Affordable Care Act, while respecting religious beliefs.”

But some pro-abortion groups, as well as Democratic members of Congress, such as Sen. Patty Murray, Wash., expressed opposition to the new rules, stating that they give too much “power over the health care decisions of the women they employ.” Murray opined that the regulations demonstrate why “the Supreme Court’s deeply harmful ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby is completely unacceptable.” FULL REPORT

Texas House Committee Approves Professing ‘Christian’ Lawmaker’s Push to Legalize Pot

Posted: 12 Jul 2015 03:24 PM PDT

A House committee in Texas has approved a bill proposed by a professing Christian who seeks to legalize the recreational use of marijuana statewide. Rep. David Simpson, R-Longview, proposed HB 2165 earlier this year to do away with criminal penalties for the use of pot in Texas, striking any language in the current law that cites marijuana next to controlled substances.

In an op-ed published last month entitled “The Christian Case for Drug Law Reform”, Simpson said that his faith and his criticism of the government “war on drugs” led him to propose the bill. “As a Christian, I recognize the innate goodness of everything God made and humanity’s charge to be stewards of the same,” wrote Simpson. “I don’t believe that when God made marijuana he made a mistake that government needs to fix.” FULL REPORT

What is The Gospel?

“My Last Day” — the Jesus Anime

9 powerful minutes of animation that begins with a thief behind bars watching the scourging of Jesus, and it ends with the thief dying next to Jesus, and waking to see Him in a beautiful place.

The dying thief: What was so great about his faith?

There are many acts of extraordinary faith in the Bible. The one that has impressed me the most concerns the dying thief on the cross. We could take the approach that he had nothing to lose, so he decided to cast his lot with Jesus. But this makes absolutely no sense of the text and the context.
In this conversion we have a specific fulfillment of Christ’s first words on the cross. No sooner had Christ spoken the words, “Father, forgive them,” had the Father answered that prayer by turning a once-reviling criminal into a Christ-glorifying saint. While the soon-to-be converted criminal was not directly responsible for Christ’s death, he nevertheless joined with those who were and was thus indirectly addressed when Christ asked for God to forgive “them.”
Christ, the sinless one, was numbered with or counted among the transgressors (Isa. 53:12; Luke 22:37), all of whom have a bigger problem than the day-to-day sins they commit. They hate Christ, the God-man. Anyone who has a master other than the Lord Jesus hates him (Lk. 16:13; Gal. 4:8). That these two criminals loathed him is clearly manifested during the crucifixion: “And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way” (Matt. 27:44).
When the criminal who was converted was doing his worst against Christ, Christ was doing his best for this criminal.
The conversion of the one criminal was most extraordinary and testifies to the power of Christ’s prayer and the grace of God. Why?
This criminal’s faith did not come at a time such as when Christ turned water into wine; or performed miracles, such as walking on water, opening the eyes of a blind man, or raising Lazarus from the dead. No! The criminal believed on the Messiah while he was hanging as one cursed upon a tree. The criminal trusted in and boldly defended the one whose disciples had abandoned him. Jesus was at his lowest when this criminal asked to be remembered in Christ’s kingdom.
When he was on the cross, did anyone publicly cry out, as John the Baptist did, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (Jn. 1:29)? But this is essentially what the dying thief did. Little wonder, then, that Christ should promise him a place in his kingdom: “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Lk. 23:43).
The criminal acknowledged he was guilty; he acknowledged that Christ was not (“this man has done nothing wrong”); he feared God; but, and here is the key: the criminal did not merely want to be in a better place. He wanted to be with Christ in a better place: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom” (Lk. 23:42). The criminal believed “against all hope”.
Heaven is a better place because that is where Christ is. Everyone wants to go to heaven, but not everyone wants to go to Christ’s heaven. Not so with this criminal: he saw, with his eyes, Christ at his worst; but with the eyes of faith, he believed that Christ would soon be at his best, and so put his faith in a dying king.
Christ is always – always! – willing to save even the most miserable of sinners. A recognition of guilt (Lk. 23:40) and a confidence in him and not ourselves (Lk. 23:42) will always lead to the most assuring truth a sinner can receive: the Savior welcomes such into his paradise!
“One is saved, and we may not despair; the other is lost, and we may not presume.” Spurgeon
